Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education

Harvard University Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education

Last updated July 15, 2022

Next in my series on  How To Fully Fund Your PhD , I provide a list below of universities that offer full funding to all students admitted to their PhD programs in education, international education, and educational leadership.

You can find several competitive, external fellowships in the ProFellow database for graduate and doctoral study, but it is useful to seek out PhD programs that offer full funding to all admitted students. When a doctoral program indicates that they provide full funding to their PhD students, in most cases this means they provide each admitted student full tuition and a stipend for living expenses for the four to the six-year duration of the student’s doctoral studies. Not all universities provide full funding to their doctoral students, which is why I recommend researching the financial aid offerings of all the potential PhD programs in your academic field, including small and lesser-known schools both in the U.S. and abroad.

My Directory of Fully Funded PhD Programs in Education, available at the link above, includes acceptance rates of the programs.

I just applied to a PhD program at Drexel’s School of Education. Fully Funded co-horts are not available. It is $1100 per credit, plus fees…

Hi Meg, thanks for this update! I will look into this and remove Drexel from this list.

Yikes, that price is literally insane.

Very useful information you’ve presented here after scouring the internet for weeks. This term fully funded was the buzzword I was missing. Now to find fully funded PhD programs that can be done online with minimal residency so I don’t have to uproot my family and my current teaching load. Are there any online programs that are fully funded?

Tracy, I have not been able to find any so far. Online programs are typically offered by for-profit universities. However, if you can find a 3-year PhD position that does not require the normal 2 years of course (typically you need to have a Master’s/postgraduate degree already to be eligible for these), you may not need to be in-resident. These programs are more common in Europe, Asia and Oceania. Thus you might spend some time abroad to get started, and then could complete your PhD dissertation remotely. This would require negotiation with your supervisors.

Vicki Johnson, do you have any specific ideas for programs? I have a Master’s degree in English but looking into a doctoral program in International Education or similar. My background is teaching ESL and English.

Try Colorado State University, their program is fairly new (10) but they have some online portion and a short residency program.

Do you have any information about fully funded Ed.D programs?

Same question!

Thank you for the information. I will be finished with my MAT (Biology ) in 2018 and am looking for a PhD program in Education. The program must be fully funded and in Maryland because I am a new Mom and my husband’s job is here in MD. I hope to find something so that we don’t have to move.

Hi Taj, I would suggest looking into the university programs that are nearby you. You can call the admissions office to find out if they offer full funding packages to incoming doctoral students.

Thank you so much and I will do that asap.

Johns Hopkins

Thank you so much Ms. Love.

Really? Do they fully fund?

Hello Johns Hopkins university has a fully funded Phd program in Education.

Did you find something? Same here!

Have you looked at the Universities at Shady Grove?

Hello I am looking now after reading your suggestion!! Thank you.

Is there any Ph.d course after graduation of 4 years in elementary education?

I am looking for the right fellowship for an Ed.D. with a focus on training of teachers in developing countries. I am looking for the university already doing research in African countries. Can you give me any recommendations?

Most of these fellowships sound like assistantships that waive tuition and provide a stipend in exchange for work. NSF gives out fellowships that amount to more than $100,000 for 3 years of study, plus you can work an assistantship. Stanford is making three fellowships each year with a total value of $160,000 for business students. Compared to Fellowships in Science and Technology, Education majors get almost nothing. Education is just not a national priority and is certainly not on an equal footing with STEM fields.

Hi there. I’m looking for a fully-funded PhD degree in education in Australia or Canada. Is there any available? Your kind advice is highly appreciated.

Good day. I like to have a PhD fully funded scholarship in Educational Technology and I will appreciate this if I could be directed to the right University. Thank you.

Please see my comment above!

Greetings. I am an experienced minority teacher with strong science and computer technology background. I look forward to a fully funded PhD program in “Educational Technology for the future” research studies. I believe I possess all the tools and an exceptional will to pursue my research in this direction. Any assistance in this direction will be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I wanted to share that you do not need to enter a PhD program specifically in the subject of Educational Technology to do a PhD dissertation in this subject. You can do a dissertation in this subject in a general PhD in Education program. The key is to identify universities with professors who have done research in this subject who are availble serve as your advisor. You might also do a dissertation in this subject in Business PhD program.

Hi: Thank you very much for your response regarding my request. I am a believer of STEAM not just STEM, and an interdisciplinary approach to develop a comprehensive immersive educational programs. I look forward to some kind of an educational foundation or an agency to hear about my proposal to develop a pilot program to implement a “comprehensive immersive educational system” with a strong technology foundation where Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Arts (including Philosophy) to achieve the maximum learning experience of young minds.

Greetings. I appreciate your work here. I am interested in a fully funded PhD programme in Special Education. I shall be very appreciative of your anticipated kind gesture. Thanks

Hello, Can I get some information on fully funded Ph.D program in IT and Computer science in US for an international student(Graduate in Information Assurance)? I can be emailed at [email protected] for extra information. Thank you.

Hi Nikhitha, please see our article Fully Funded PhD Programs in Computer Science: https://www.profellow.com/fellowships/fully-funded-phd-programs-in-computer-science/

Hi, thanks for the wonderful info. I’m interested in a few different areas for a PHD that I don’t see listed: Buddhism, Comparative Religions, Psychology, Mythology or Stories (lit, film, poetry, all forms). Given that these subject are not exactly the cats’ meow in terms of financial opportunities afterwords, the study is a labor of love and philanthropy. Could there possibly be a school for me somewhere? I would do a part-time online program with an international university if needed too – I’m in Southern California.

I’m a nurse educator in Singapore. Have been teaching in academic school and hospital for more than 10yrs. I have master of education from university of Sydney. How can I do a part time PhD in education which is fully funded? Please assist.

I have a JD, a few credits short of a LLM (in Comparative Law), and a MA (in African-American World Studies). I have been working as a lawyer for a non-profit Public Interest firm for 12 years, but I want to get a PhD. I have a small family now (3,8 year old girls), so I need a PhD program that is fully funded. I am interested in “Justice” so I can pursue a PhD in either Law, African American Studies, or Education. I have been out of the scholarly environment for so long, I really don’t know where to start. Any help would be appreciated.

Where Can You Earn An Online Ph.D. In Special Education In 2024?

Key Takeaways

  • A doctorate in special education allows you to conduct original research in specialized areas of the field and take an active role in shaping the education of students with physical and intellectual disabilities and other exceptionalities.
  • Online Ph.D. in special education programs are comparatively rare, but online learning may help you balance graduate study with other obligations and let you access programs across the country without having to relocate.
  • For full-time doctoral students, an online Ph.D. in special education typically takes three to five years to complete.

Education professionals who want to pursue leadership roles and change the future of special education should consider earning a doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.) in special education. This terminal graduate degree develops advanced expertise in particular areas of special education.

Special education doctoral programs explore educational research methodology, special education law, public policy and pedagogy. Program requirements may include an internship, a comprehensive or qualifying examination, and a doctoral dissertation. Some programs offer specializations like administration, autism, applied behavior analysis and university teaching.

An online Ph.D. in special education can prepare you to work in university teaching and research, program development, specialist teaching and consulting, or educator preparation and training. Learn where you can earn a Ph.D. in special education online.

How To Find the Right Online Ph.D. in Special Education for You

Consider your future goals.

Before choosing an online Ph.D. in special education, think about what you want to do after graduation. No two programs are identical, so you should find the one that best aligns with your future career goals.

In a program where faculty members are already conducting research in your interest area, you’ll have an easier time getting the support and opportunities you need to succeed.

If you want to concentrate your research on a specific population or area of special education, make sure to find a program that makes this possible. For example, if you want to research special education issues related to children with autism spectrum disorder, find a program with an autism concentration, or one that will let you design your own area of focus.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Total tuition rates for the degrees discussed on this page amount to about $41,400 for TTU’s Ph.D. and $56,500 for UNC’s.

For comparison, The National Center for Education Statistics reports that one year of graduate school tuition and fees costs about $11,500 for in-state students at public universities. Private, nonprofit universities charge just over $20,000 per year for graduate tuition and fees. (These figures include master’s degrees; it’s tough to parse out the average cost of tuition for a doctorate since program costs vary widely at the doctoral level.)

To apply for federal student aid that can help pay for your online Ph.D. in special education, fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Federal aid may include student loans, grants and scholarships. Your department and school also may offer funding options like scholarships, fellowships, and graduate student research and teaching assistantships.

Should You Enroll in an Online Ph.D. in Special Education Program?

Online Ph.D. in special education programs can provide flexibility and convenience, making it easier for working educators to go back to school. However, online learning does not suit everyone. Consider the below factors before committing to a delivery format for your degree.

Online programs can offer savings since distance learners do not pay for expensive on-campus housing or transportation costs. In general, tuition rates for distance education programs tend to be similar to or lower than rates for on-campus offerings.

Learning Style

Succeeding in an online learning environment usually takes good time management and organizational skills. You must be able to motivate yourself to do the work, even when you don’t feel like it. If you tend to procrastinate, or if you otherwise benefit from the structure and accountability of in-person classes, an online program might not work for you.

Time Commitment

Compared to in-person programs, which require you to attend class at a specific place and time, online programs usually provide greater scheduling flexibility. Asynchronous programs in particular allow you to work through your course material at your convenience. This flexibility can especially benefit learners with full-time jobs and other time-intensive commitments.

Accreditation for Online Ph.D. in Special Education

Universities can pursue institutional accreditation to showcase their high-quality educational offerings.

To award institutional accreditation, independent accrediting bodies approved by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) evaluate schools based on factors like quality of faculty, availability of student services and responsible financial management.

Programmatic accreditation signals that a specific department or program within a university has passed a rigorous quality assurance process. Online Ph.D. in special education programs may hold programmatic accreditation from the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation.

You can research school and program accreditation using CHEA’s searchable directory . Most schools also provide accreditation information on an accreditation page of their website.

We scored two accredited, nonprofit colleges offering online Ph.D. in special education programs in the U.S. using 15 data points in the categories of credibility, affordability, student outcomes, student experience and application process.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) About Online Ph.D. in Special Education Programs

What is the difference between a ph.d. and an ed.s..

An education specialist (Ed.S.) degree, similar to a doctor of education (Ed.D.), is a postgraduate education degree that is more advanced than a typical master’s degree but less intensive than a Ph.D. While a Ph.D. in special education usually prepares graduates to work on high-level special education research, policy or university teaching, an Ed.S. prepares graduates to assume leadership roles as special education practitioners.

Is a Ph.D. better than an Ed.D.?

The answer depends on your career goals. Ph.D. special education programs focus primarily on university-level research and teaching, while Ed.D. programs are designed for practitioners. If you want to take a leadership role working directly with special education students, an Ed.D. is a good choice. On the other hand, if you want to design and conduct studies on special education issues, choose a Ph.D.

How long does it take to earn a Ph.D. in special education online?

How long it takes to earn your online Ph.D. in special education depends largely on whether you study full time or part time. Full-time Ph.D. candidates can typically complete their coursework and doctoral dissertation in three to five years.

What can you do with a Ph.D. in special education?

Many Ph.D. in special education graduates go on to teach at the university level or conduct academic research in the field. Others work at individual schools or school districts as special education coordinators, curriculum specialists, administrators or consultants.

Is a Ph.D. in special education worth it?

Depending on your career goals, a Ph.D. in special education may be worth it. This terminal degree is typically required if you plan to conduct research and train future special education professionals as a university professor. It can also benefit those seeking advanced special education roles in schools and school districts, although other graduate degrees—such as an Ed.S. or Ed.D.—may also help you qualify for these positions.

What Is the Difference Between a Ph.D. and an Ed.D?

This is a good question that we are glad you asked. These degrees vary quite a bit, and one may be more suitable for your future goals than another. Let’s start out with what is similar about both of these degrees. Both of these degrees are doctorates, the highest degree possible in their respective fields, and both of these degrees can have a focus on special education.

These degrees differ in that a Ph.D. is more of a research-focused degree, which places more emphasis on the production of academic writing than on the practical application of the subject. Conversely, Ed.D degrees place emphasis on the application of learned knowledge, in this case, special education. Students in an Ed.D still learn to evaluate and conduct research, but often these degrees don’t require a thesis.

Ed.D students are typically required to perform a comprehensive research project in which they may have to select a question, formulate a survey, study, or improvement outline, conduct the project, and present the findings in an academic paper. These projects are commonly conducted in the student’s place of work or in a setting that is familiar to the student. While these projects may sound very similar to a thesis in a Ph.D., these projects tend to be less rigorous and can be completed in a shorter amount of time.

What Will I Need to Apply to a Ph.D. or Doctorate in Special Education Program?

So you’ve finally committed to the idea that you’re going to get a doctorate degree in special education, but you’re curious about what you’ll need to submit in the application. Some schools may have specific school and program requirements that are not talked about here, but many schools have some of the same requirements that are asked for in the school’s admission application. We’ll talk about the commonalities for admission into an online doctorate program, but you should check with the school you want to attend about any additional requirements that they may have.

Many online Ph.D. or doctorate programs in special education, but not all, will want to see that students have completed a master’s degree in the subject, or at the very least a bachelor’s with evidence of work experience in the field. The school is going to want to see official transcripts from all the universities and colleges you have attended in the past. This will show the admissions group how you have been able to handle the academic rigors of college in your past.

Some programs require that students submit an essay or sample of the prospective student’s writing in their application packet. There will be a lot of writing in a Ph.D. or doctorate program, and students must be able to communicate their ideas clearly and succinctly, and these writing samples held the school ensure you are ready for this level of education. When applying to this program, schools will likely also ask you to submit at least three references, with one being from a professor you have had in the past.

Should I Attend an Online or On-ground Ph.D. or Doctorate Program?

The decision to attend an online or an on-ground program has to be made after a careful evaluation of your learning style and the obligations and commitments you have in your life now. If you have completed online coursework in the past and didn’t have trouble turning in assignments on time and completing the coursework, then you’ll likely do fine in an online doctorate program. Students that have difficulty meeting deadlines and have a tendency to procrastinate may find an online program more challenging than an on-ground program.

Additionally, individuals with full-time jobs and families often find that online programs offer the flexibility and convenience needed to reach their educational goals. Those with families should have a serious discussion about the commitment you are making to enroll in an online doctorate program. Family members of those in an online program often make sacrifices along with the learner with regard to time spent together, and having a fully supportive family will make the doctoral journey much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the main differences between an edd and a phd in special education .

The EdD degree is an application-centric degree where students develop their practical knowledge and skills in addressing real-world issues, while the research-focused Ph.D. degree emphasizes the production of original research.

Professionals with an EdD degree are more likely to be in leadership and administration positions, while PhD holders are in research, policy and advocacy, and academia. EdD programs typically have shorter time-to-degree than PhD programs.

What are the professional organizations that Special Education professionals can join?

Prominent professional organizations include the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), the Division for Research (DR) of the Council for Exceptional Children, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD), and the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET). These organizations are excellent sources of professional development, research, and networking opportunities.

What are the professional certifications available for Special Education professionals?

Consider the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), Certified Special Education Teacher, Certified Autism Specialist (CAS), Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), and Board Certified Educational Therapist (BCET) certifications .  Continuing education through seminars, conferences, and workshops is a must, too.

  • Academic Appointments
  • Policy Making
  • School Administration

All special education graduates offer passion and preparedness in advocating for those with exceptionalities. Special education doctoral students should be patient, caring, and creative on the job, as well as personally. These qualifications, along with adequate schooling, prepare you for careers in special education.

Some of the common professions for individuals with online doctorate in special education degrees include:

  • Instructional Specialists
  • Provosts and Academic Deans
  • Public Policy Researchers
  • Special Education Teachers

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, educational jobs are expected to increase over the next several years. Job opportunities in specific specialties, such as gifted learning or autism, may be better than others. This is due to certain school districts and states allocating resources to heighten awareness. As federal laws change, the hiring of specialists may be impacted. Funding issues and employment layoffs due to budget cuts will impact special education jobs in school districts, but academia will likely not be impacted.

What is the job outlook for individuals with an online doctorate in special education?

The BLS reports the overall employment of special education teachers is projected to grow eight percent through 2026. That’s about as fast as the eight percent average for all occupations. However, postsecondary teachers will see a much faster than average growth rate.

In fact, BLS reports the overall employment of postsecondary teachers will grow 15 percent over the next seven years. This percentage is almost double the growth rate for special education teachers.

Enrollment is the biggest factor impacting growth. Community colleges, four-year institutions, and school districts will see increasing enrollment numbers in their student populations. At the community college level, employment growth will likely be in part-time positions and adjunct instructor jobs, while school districts will hire full-time teachers.

Within school districts, teacher replacement impacts hiring. As teachers retire, new teachers must replace those leaving the occupation. Also, particularly in special education, teaching students with disabilities can be stressful.

Some teachers choose to leave the classroom and return to school for advanced training. These teachers may not return to the classroom but choose to pursue careers in policy or administration.

The overall job outlook for individuals with adequate training is favorable. Individuals with unique training and an online doctorate in special education will have the best chances for stable employment.

How much money will I make with an online doctorate in special education?

According to PayScale, a global compensation research organization, the average pay for special education teachers is $48,027. The highest earners (top ten percent) receive pay in excess of $70,000 annually. Most individuals with a doctorate in special education do not work as school teachers, but hold careers as educational consultants, policy advocates, or professors.

Salaries vary by professions. Educational consultants earn $61,094 on average with the top 10 percent earning $103,000 per year. Postsecondary professors earn $86,577 on average with the highest earners bringing in $156,000 annually. Of course, discipline and institution impact professor earnings.

According to PayScale, the average earnings of an assistant professor of education is $63,862. Associate professors earn $73,511, and professors earn $86,192 on average.

Administrators and directors in special education earn competitive salaries. Most work in school districts as administrators or for local and government agencies. The average director of special education salary, according to PayScale, is $73,846.

Pay by experience for director of special education occupations has a positive trend. This means the more experience a director of special education has, the more money they will likely earn. For example, PayScale reports the entry-level director with less than five years of experience earns $63,000 annually while a director with five to ten years of experience earns $67,000 annually.

Employers often value education as experience. This means the more education you have, the higher your earning potential.

What are the admission requirements for online doctorate in special education programs from top-ranked schools?

Online doctorate in special education program admission requirements vary by institution. The highly selective programs on our list require that doctoral students have more than an undergraduate degree and completed application.

In fact, top-tier institutions ask for competitive undergraduate GPAs of 3.0 or better, qualifying GRE or GMAT test scores, and two to three letters of recommendation from individuals attesting to the applicant’s research potential.

At a minimum, the schools on our list require that doctoral students earned bachelor’s in education and, in some cases, earned master’s degrees from regionally or nationally accredited colleges or universities. GPA requirements vary, but most programs ask for undergraduate GPAs of 3.0 or better. When master’s degrees are required for admission, GPAs should also reflect stellar performance. Most programs asking for an earned master’s from an accredited institution require a 3.5 GPA.

GRE scores are not the norm across admission’s boards. Programs, especially those with top rankings, will ask for competitive GRE scores. Graduate exams should be taken within the last five years. In fact, most programs will not accept GRE scores taken outside this timeframe.

Additional requirements for PhD in special education programs online include letters of recommendation, a statement of purpose or goals, and writing samples. Most applications may be completed online. Applications do require a fee. These fees vary slightly by school.

How long does it take to earn a doctorate in special education online?

Time to completion for a PhD in special education program online varies by schools and programs. According to our research, many of the doctoral programs take three to five years to earn an online PhD in special education. However, certain factors impact completion time.

The first factor impacting completion time is enrollment. Full-time and part-time enrollment will either shorten or lengthen the time spent earning a doctoral degree. While part-time programs offer flexibility, the program will take additional time. On the other hand, full-time programs allow students to earn their degree in record time.

Working professionals may find benefits of part-time programs helpful when balancing family with career obligations. However, there is value in finishing your PhD in special education quickly. A three-year program means that in three years, your earning potential will rise. In a five-year program, students will be in school for two additional years, which can impact earnings.

Most of the PhD in special education online programs on our list offer both part-time and full-time enrollment options. Some programs even offer students flexible enrollment each semester. This means degree candidates may enroll as part-time students one semester and full-time students the next.

In addition, flexible enrollment benefits working and busy students and provide them with more freedom while earning their degree.

The concept of a “fully funded” PhD program signifies that the entirety of expenses related to the doctoral program is covered. This includes tuition fees, which are either waived or entirely paid for by the educational institution.

Beyond tuition, the program also encompasses a living stipend or allowance given to doctoral students.

Fully funded PhD programs essentially function as a comprehensive scholarship, covering everything from tuition fees to books and other necessary supplies.

While the stipend amount can vary based on the institution, it is generally sufficient to cater to the basic living expenses of the students, covering rent, food, and transportation costs.

The main aim of providing this stipend to doctoral students is to facilitate a learning environment where they can focus entirely on their studies, research, and dissertation, without the distraction of financial pressures.

Universities, including public ones, offer these fee-waived doctoral programs with the intention to draw in the best students.

These students, in turn, are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of research in their respective fields and derive a high-quality education from their doctorates.

It is important to note that eligibility for these scholarships or stipends requires proof of commitment to the doctoral degree. In my experience, this meant securing a top-class master’s degree. This reassured the university of my dedication to pursuing a PhD and furthering my education.

In recent years, there has been a rise in such fully funded programs online , offering a wider reach for prospective PhDs.

As we move further into 2023, students may increasingly opt for these online PhD programmes, making the pursuit of doctoral degrees more accessible than ever.

Countries with a free PhD / fully funded PhD – How much does a PhD cost in other countries?

Sometimes doing a free PhD means going abroad and doing your PhD in another country.

Personally, I travelled to Australia to do my PhD for the adventure and lifestyle. I was able to get a fee-waived placement and international student fee waiver for three years to finish my degree.

Here’s a summary of some of the best countries you could do you PhD in if you want to do it for free.

Czech RepublicNo FeesAdditional costs for international students
SwedenNo FeesStudy grants for some PhD students
GermanyNo Fees€300 administration fee per semester
AustriaNo Fees for EU/EEA students who finish on timeFees for international students, capped by the government
NorwayNo FeesSmall semester fee
DenmarkNo Fees for EU, EEA, and Swiss studentsHigh fees for international students
FinlandNo FeesFees for Masters programs for international students
Saudi ArabiaNo FeesAll fees covered by scholarships, including living costs
NetherlandsNot universally freeMany institutions offer free PhD study to international students, some classify them as employees with potential salary/benefits
SwitzerlandLow Fees (CHF 1500/year)State-funded PhD places with no fees and a maintenance grant for EU, EEA, Swiss students

In the Czech Republic , public universities host a multitude of English-language PhD programs and these programs are free for all PhD students, irrespective of their nationality. However, additional costs may be incurred by international students which might include language courses, health insurance, or student services fees, depending on the university policies.

Sweden maintains a unique policy that not only eradicates PhD fees at public universities but also provides study grants to some PhD students, which serves as a financial aid for their living expenses during the tenure of their studies.

In Germany , public universities offer feeless PhD programs to all students, which can include free PhD programs online. However, a nominal administration fee, approximately €300 per semester, is required. This fee usually covers student services and perks like public transportation and access to university facilities.

Austria ‘s policy benefits PhD students from within the EU and EEA who complete their doctorates within a stipulated time frame, offering free education at public research universities. International students, on the other hand, have to pay fees, which, nonetheless, are capped by the Austrian government to maintain affordability.

Norway , like its Nordic counterparts, offers free PhD education at public universities to all students, regardless of their origin. But a small semester fee, usually covering student services, is obligatory.

Denmark also practices a policy of free PhD education for EU, EEA, and Swiss students at public universities, but international students are required to pay fees, which are generally on the higher side compared to other European countries.

Finland doesn’t discriminate in terms of nationality and offers free PhD studies at public universities. However, international students are charged for their Masters programs.

Saudi Arabia stands out with its unique policy where all PhD students are awarded scholarships that automatically cover their education fees, as well as help them with living expenses.

In the Netherlands , PhD study isn’t universally free, but many institutions extend the offer of free PhD study to international postgraduates. Some universities consider the PhD students as university employees, offering them a waiver on fees and potentially a salary or benefits.

Switzerland , although not offering free PhD studies, keeps its fees low at around CHF 1500 per year at public universities. State-funded PhD positions are also available to EU, EEA, and Swiss students that come with no fees and a maintenance grant.

Top tips for finding a PhD for free – online and on-campus

Here are the top tips I would give you when Choosing a free PhD.

  • Apply to STEM programs: Many PhD (and Master’s) programs, especially in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) fields, are fully funded in the US. Most state schools and Ivy League schools have fully funded programs for these fields.
  • Prepare for stiff competition: Because these programs are fully funded, the competition is high. It’s not uncommon for hundreds or even thousands of students to apply to these programs each year, with only a small fraction being accepted.
  • Consider assistantships: Fully-funded programs usually provide a stipend in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) or Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) positions. These roles involve either teaching or conducting research under a professor’s supervision.
  • Be ready for some costs: Despite tuition being covered, you may still need to cover some school fees, student insurance, and other miscellaneous expenditures.
  • Don’t consider unfunded programs: Many graduate programs do not fund students, but experts advise against attending these schools. The availability of funding indicates the health of the department in terms of research money and growth.
  • Work on your application: The application process generally starts around September to December for many accredited online doctorate degrees. Standardized tests such as GRE and TOEFL/IELTS are required, along with transcripts, recommendation letters, and a statement of purpose.
  • Avoid programs that require you to pay: It’s a common sentiment among experts that if you’re paying to be a PhD student, there might be something wrong with the program.
  • Apply for fellowships: There are graduate fellowships available for international students that cover tuition and offer a monthly stipend.

Wrapping up – Free doctoral degree program and online doctoral program – Get a PhD

This comprehensive article delves into everything you need to know about free PhD programs, also known as fully funded PhD programs, including the essential details, benefits, and potential challenges that students may encounter.

The term “free PhD” generally refers to a fully funded program that covers tuition fees and provides a stipend for living expenses, allowing students to complete their PhD studies without financial burden.

It is crucial to understand why you should never enter a PhD program without proper funding. Hence, pursuing a free or fully funded PhD should be a priority for all PhD students, regardless of nationality or field of study.

These programs may be offered both online and on-campus by various top universities around the world.

Fully funded PhD programs cater to both international and local students, including those pursuing a traditional PhD, online doctorate, or an accelerated executive doctorate of education.

For instance, fully funded online PhD programs in fields like business administration, education policy, and social work in clinical practice are available for students who hold master’s or bachelor’s degrees.

The duration of these programs may range from 1 year for fast-track or shortest doctoral programs to several years for other disciplines, including online phd studies. Moreover, many programs focus on specialization in subjects like higher education policy, laboratory research, and much more.

One of the perks of these programs is that many institutions provide a stipend to cover living expenses during the course of study, ensuring that students can focus entirely on their research without worrying about financial constraints.

Best Free Online Ph.D. Programs of 2024

Written by Kristen Scatton , Interviews with Blanca Villagomez

Updated: September 3, 2024

Compare School Options

Most schools have rolling admissions and financial help so you can start your degree in a few weeks!

Earning a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) online can unlock doors to new career paths and leadership positions, increase earning potential, and lower unemployment . However, paying for a doctoral degree program after earning, in most cases, a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree may be a barrier for some students.

Because online Ph.D. programs focus on educating leaders and innovators within a given field, many financial support options exist to help students afford doctoral degrees. This article highlights some of the most financially supportive Ph.D. programs in the U.S., including those that may offer students a path to earning a doctorate degree for free. It also includes expert guidance from Blanca Villagomez, a program coordinator and counselor at UC-Irvine, on choosing the Ph.D. program that’s right for you.

What You Should Know About Free Ph.D. Programs

Attending a Ph.D. program for free typically means that a student receives enough financial support from the institution and other sources to fully cover the cost of their doctoral degree, not that the school doesn’t charge tuition and fees for attendance. Students should carefully research any colleges that claim to offer online doctoral programs without charging tuition, as this is not common among legitimate post-secondary institutions.

The most common types of funding for online Ph.D. programs include fellowships, assistantships, grants, and scholarships.

Find a fully-funded Ph.D. program

As you research Ph.D. programs, you may encounter the phrase “fully funded.” This is how schools typically advertise free doctoral programs, as it means that students receive funding that completely covers their cost of attendance.

In fully-funded doctoral programs, students often receive assistantships or fellowships. Students who receive an assistantship are employed by their university, often as teaching assistants (TAs) for undergraduate classes or research assistants (RAs) to faculty or researchers. Arrangements vary by school and program, and students may either receive payment that they can use to pay for tuition and other expenses or have their tuition waived in exchange for their employment. In addition to maintaining academic standards, students must fulfill their work obligations to keep their assistantship.

Meanwhile, fellowships are awards given to students in doctoral programs to continue pursuing an academic focus or interest. Schools and outside organizations can offer fellowships, which are similar to research grants. Fellowships operate more like research grants in that students are expected to use this financial support to help them further their research goals, but there aren’t specific work expectations like there are for assistantships.

In both cases, students may also receive benefits like health insurance, a stipend for living expenses, and tuition waivers. However, it’s important to note that fully-funded Ph.D. programs tend to be highly competitive with limited availability. Students should inquire early about the eligibility criteria for available fellowships and assistantships to ensure they submit a strong application.

Seek out scholarships and grants

Scholarships and grants can also help students cover the cost of online doctoral programs. These types of funding are considered gift aid because they don’t have to be repaid and often don’t have requirements like assistantships or fellowships. Scholarships and grants are often awarded based on financial need, although some may be awarded to students based on academic or professional merit.

Students can obtain scholarships and grants for doctoral degree programs through their institution or outside sources, such as professional organizations, private non-profits and endowments, federal and state governments, and community and religious groups.

In order to obtain need-based aid, students must typically submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Students should consult with their school’s financial aid office to learn more about available scholarship and grant opportunities.

Here are a couple examples to give you an idea of exactly how these awards work for online doctoral programs:

  • CAPCSD Ph.D. Scholarships: Every year, the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders awards $20,000 to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program for communication sciences and disorders. Applicants must submit a curriculum vitae, a summary of their research dissertation plan, and a letter of support from their research advisor signed by the program director.
  • Russell Sage Foundation Dissertation Research Grants: This award of up to $10,000 is for students in doctoral programs who are researching topics related to the Russell Sage Foundation’s mission of improving social and living conditions in the United States. These funds must be used specifically for dissertation research expenses, such as study participant incentives, laboratory costs, and travel.

Avoid non-accredited degree mills

When prioritizing free or low-cost Ph.D. programs, it’s important to also be mindful of the quality and legitimacy of the institutions you’re considering.

Make sure that any private college you’re considering is a nonprofit organization. Many private for-profit organizations that offer online doctoral programs, especially those claiming “free” doctoral degree programs, are actually degree mills. This means they operate like a postsecondary institution even though they don’t have the proper accreditation to award legitimate doctoral degrees .

Degree mills focus more on generating revenue than providing high-quality education. They often attract users by advertising free tuition, only to charge an assortment of other fees (exam fees, graduation fees, etc.). They also often lack qualified faculty, effective curriculums, and sufficient support staff. Says Villagomez, “Attending a non-accredited college or degree mill can negatively impact a student’s post-graduate opportunities, including employment and professional licensure, as many employers don’t recognize degrees from these types of schools.”

There are a few ways to determine whether a doctoral program is legitimate. Look up the doctoral program online for information about accreditation and non-profit or for-profit status. You can independently verify this information using the U.S. Department of Education’s Database of Accredited Postsecondary Institutions and Programs (DAPIP). Look for the names of regional accrediting organizations . Colleges approved by one of these organizations are held to strict standards for academic quality, ensuring that students will be prepared to enter their chosen field upon graduation.

An additional clue is the URL of the school’s website. Ensure that the school’s domain name ends in “.edu,” as this signifies it is a recognized educational institution. Other suffixes, such as “.org” or “.com,” indicate that the school is likely for-profit and may lack accreditation.

Online Ph.D. Programs Frequently Asked Questions

Should i earn a ph.d. degree online or in person.

“When deciding whether to pursue an online or on-campus Ph.D. program, there are several factors to consider,” Villagomez says. “Due to the rigorous nature of a doctorate program, an online program can offer students the flexibility to manage multiple responsibilities while studying and attending classes. However, an on-campus program may be more suitable for those who prefer direct contact with faculty, peers, and resources.”

Support for research and dissertation preparation is another consideration. “Since a Ph.D. degree consists of extensive research, be sure to screen available programs based on what your research opportunities look like,” Villagomez says. “Conducting research requires many hours of independent study and discipline, so choosing between an online or on-campus program can impact your research trajectory. Ensuring that you have the best team by your side for your dissertation is also imperative. You want to evaluate the strength of a department’s faculty and assess how you will stay connected with them depending on the program setting.”

How much does an online Ph.D. degree program cost?

There are several factors that determine how much an online Ph.D. degree can cost, including the type of school a student attends and how much financial support they receive.

According to the Education Data Initiative , as of 2023, the average cost of a Ph.D. at a public university was $72,990, while students at private institutions paid an average of $101,810 for their doctoral degrees.

As noted above, there are many options students can explore to lower the cost of their Ph.D. degrees. Earning an online degree can also save students money, as it allows students to live in an area with a lower cost of living, eliminates transportation costs like gas and parking, and provides more flexibility so students can continue to work while earning their degree.

For the most accurate information on the cost of a Ph.D. program, consult with a financial aid counselor at your school.

How long does it take to earn an online Ph.D. degree?

The duration of Ph.D. programs varies widely, as they often include flexible timeframes for completing all course and dissertation requirements. According to the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), as of 2020, the average completion time for a doctorate degree was about eight years. Doctorate degrees in physical and earth sciences took the least amount of time to complete, with an average of 6.3 years. Meanwhile, doctorate degrees in education took, on average, 12 years to complete.

Students should consult with an admissions counselor or program representative from potential programs to get more specific information on the length of time they can expect to be in their Ph.D. program.

Is an online Ph.D. degree worth it?

“Earning an online Ph.D. can provide students with opportunities to advance their careers, develop expertise in their chosen fields, and produce scholarly research,” Villagomez says. “However, determining its worth depends on a student’s personal needs, educational goals, and potential career outcomes. I recommend students evaluate those variables seriously to make an informed decision before pursuing this degree.

Villagomez also points out that, even if students are attending a Ph.D. program for free, earning a doctorate still requires a significant time investment. “These types of programs often require a minimum commitment of five years, although they can often extend beyond that. But longer graduate programs may not always equate to a higher return on investment.” Students should research the earning potential for the career or job they plan to pursue and compare that to the financial and time investment required for a Ph.D. program to help them determine if a program is worth it.
