Learn about the annual national competition called the Three Minute Thesis (3MT), challenge yourself to build new skills, frame your work differently, and maybe even win some cash prizes. We’re ramping up to enter 3MT season and now's your chance to get involved!

Register for FASS Three Minute Thesis Competition
Give voice to your thesis in SFU's annual 3 Minute Thesis competition. One slide. Three minutes. Cash prizes.
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges graduate students to present their thesis and its significance in just three minutes and one slide. The competition cultivates students' academic, presentation, and research communication skills, and celebrates exciting graduate research taking place at Simon Fraser University.
The FASS 3MT competition will be in-person this year. The heat takes place on Thursday, March 9 th at 1pm in the Big Data Hub Theatre . FASS winners will be announced by Thursday, March 16th. The SFU-wide 3MT finals is on Wednesday, April 5th.
Registration closes for the FASS 3MT heat on February 27th at midnight.

FASS Students Compete in Three Minute Thesis Competition
Students, research.
As faculty and students who have attended MA or PhD oral defences can attest, a typical précis for a thesis can last from 15-30 minutes and tackles the monumental task of summarizing 40,000-80,000 words of research and argumentation.
Last Thursday, February 26 th , fourteen graduate students gathered in the thesis defence room to compete in the FASS semi-finals for SFU's Three Minute Thesis Competition .
A wide range of disciplines were represented by both MA and PhD graduate students including: Tarah Hodgkinson and Kyle Sutherland in Criminology; Sazid Hasan and Soheil Mahmoodzadeh in Economics; Laura Booi in Gerontology; Joana Bettocchi-Barrow in Latin American Studies; Emanuela Mileva in Linguistics; Rina Kashyap and Nancy Teeple in Political Science; and Senay Cebioglu, John Gaspar, Scott Neufeld, and Bertrand Sager in Psychology.
And the winners are:
- First Place : Senay Cebioglu (Psychology) for “Becoming Human: Developing Self-Awareness.”
- Second Place : Bertrand Sager (Psychology) for, “Perception of Oncoming Motorcycles While Preparing a Left Turn.”
- Third Place : Joana Bettocchi-Barrow (Latin American Studies) for “Health in Distant Fields.”
- People’s Choice : Emanuela Mileva (Linguistics) “Getting to know your patient: talk in alternative medicine sessions as a blend of mainstream medicine and psychotherapy.”
Each of the winners received a cash prize and finalists Senay Cebioglu and Emanuela Mileva will represent FASS at the SFU Three Minute Thesis Finals on March 9th.

Students in Non-Thesis programs are eligible to compete at SFU. While the international 3MT rules exclude our non-thesis grad students, we will include all of our graduate students in our university-level competition. However, non-thesis students are not able to compete at the Western Regional and the National 3MT Competitions.

Engineering MASc student Ghazal Mirabnahrazam was announced as the first-place winner of the 2022 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Wildcard Heat. She, along with Faculty of Applied Sciences (FAS) 3MT winners, Oz Oren and Adlin Alwyn advanced to the SFU final.
