Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Louisville is a well-established program that provides its students with comprehensive academic coursework and robust clinical experiences.  Communicative Disorders is a Division within the   Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery and Communicative Disorders in the School of Medicine. There are two sections: Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. The Speech-Language Pathology program offers the Master's of Science (M.S.) degree and the Audiology program offers the Doctor of Audiology (Au.D.) degree.  All students are uniquely positioned to take advantage of ties with the Louisville medical community. Mission Statement

The mission of the section of Speech-Language Pathology is to provide high quality academic education, facilitate student access to a variety of clinical populations and settings, expand the scientific base of speech-language pathology through basic and applied research, and maintain student diversity and community partnerships.

The mission statement incorporates the general missions of the University and the School of Medicine and focuses them within the discipline of speech-language pathology.  As an educational program accredited in speech-language pathology, we strive to provide the academic background and clinical experiences that will enable our graduates to meet the diverse communicative needs of the citizens within a multicultural and metropolitan society.  The preparatory phase portion of the program supports students as they earn prerequisites to enter the degree program.  The core phase of the program provides didactic and clinical applications across the discipline.  It is also designed to prepare future speech-language pathologists who are ethical in the provision of services, as well as issues of cultural diversity (e.g., dialectal differences among speakers, deaf culture) and ethnicity. Our goal is to provide comprehensive, state-of-the-art practices in speech-language pathology in collaboration with other disciplines and community resources in the Louisville metropolitan region. Finally, we see as our mission, contribution to the scientific knowledge base in communication sciences and disorders through basic and applied research on the part of each of our faculty.

The academic goals of the program are to:

• Provide a theoretical basis for the practice of speech-language pathology,

CAA Complaint Process : Complaints about programs must: (a) be against an accredited education program or program in Candidacy status in speech-language pathology and/or audiology, (b) relate to the standards for accreditation of entry-level graduate training education programs in audiology and speech language pathology in effect at the time that the conduct for the complaint occurred, including the relationship of the complaint to the accreditation standards, (c) be clearly described, including the specific nature of the charge and the data to support the charge, and (d) be within the timelines specified on the CAA's website, HERE .  All complaints must be signed and submitted with any relevant appendices via U.S. mail, overnight courier, or hand delivery to the Chair, Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology, American Speech Language-Hearing Association, 2200 Research Boulevard, #310, Rockville, MD 20850. The complainant's burden of proof is a preponderance or greater weight of the evidence. Complaints will not be accepted by email or facsimile.

The National Student Speech-Language-Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is the only national student organization for pre-professionals studying communication sciences and disorders (CSD) recognized by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). As a recognized Chapter, UofL NSSLHA benefits both undergraduate and graduate students interested in speech-language pathology through advocacy, fundraising, volunteer, and social events throughout the year.

Post-baccalaureate degree: AuD or MS/MA in Speech Language Pathology

Audiologists are licensed health-care professionals who provide patient-centered care in the prevention, identification, diagnosis, and evidence-based treatment of hearing, balance and other auditory disorders for people of all ages. Hearing and balance disorders are complex with medical, psychological, physical, social, educational, and employment implications. Treatment services require audiologists to have knowledge of existing and emerging technologies, as well as interpersonal skills to counsel and guide patients and their family members through the rehabilitative process.

Speech-language pathologists provide vital services across the lifespan to prevent, evaluate and treat disorders in speech, spoken and written language, social communication, cognition, voice, fluency, and swallowing. They work in collaboration with clients, families, and other professionals to improve the quality of life for children and adults with communication and swallowing disorders.

Minimum Prerequisites for Admission

Audiology: the following prerequisites must be completed prior to matriculation in an audiology program:

• baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution

Speech-Language Pathology: Depending on the program, between 8-18 courses from the field of speech science are requisite for applying to a speech language pathology program. Majoring in speech-language pathology is highly recommended due to the high number of prerequisites, although as long as prerequisite courses are fulfilled any major can apply to a program. General course prequisites may include Speech Science, Phonetics, and Basic Clinical Audiology.

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) may be required for admission to graduate degree programs in audiology and speech-language pathology. Not all institutions require an examination for admission.

Speech-Language Pathology

The Master of Science (M.S.) program in speech-language pathology is a five-semester program that includes both academic and clinical courses totaling 60 hours. Each student is able to pursue a wide range of clinical assignments with three on-campus experiences and two off-campus experiences focusing on schools and medical settings. Students work with clients from diverse backgrounds, across the lifespan and multiple disorder areas.

Our academic coursework is robust and emphasizes writing and oral communication skills along with knowledge and application of research techniques. Our cohort size of 24 students ensures all students have the individual support needed to succeed. The employment rate of USM graduates is nearly 100% because employers know our graduates are ready for professional practice. Students successfully completing the master’s degree and passing a comprehensive evaluation will be prepared to take the Praxis II examination.

What Will I Learn?

The Master of Science in Speech-Language Pathology provides unique academic and clinical training for graduate students preparing to enter professional practice. The core curriculum plan of study for the program is provided below. All courses address the 2020 Speech-Language Pathology Standards outlined by the Council for Clinical Certification. See the USM Bulletin for a full description of academic courses. Graduate students are required to successfully complete 3 on-campus clinical rotations and 2 off-campus externship rotations. On-campus rotations include the Speech and Language Clinic, The Children’s Center for Communication Development and/or The DuBard School for Language Development. Off-campus externships are required for both school and adult medical settings. These valuable professional and educational experiences will prepare students for jobs in all settings including early intervention programs, public schools, hospitals, rehabilitation centers, skilled nursing facilities, and state institutions.

Students must pass the national examination in Speech-Language Pathology (Praxis II) to be eligible for the Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC-S) and state licensure.

Application deadline: February 1st for fall semester admission.

• Applicants will submit three letters of recommendations
• Applicants will submit GRE scores (waived for 2021 Cohort)
•  A minimum TOEFL/iBT score of 79 is required as applicable.

*Other bachelor’s degree holders must complete the following “leveling-in” courses with no letter grade lower than “B” prior to applying: BSC 104+L, CHE 104+L or PHY 111+L, PSY 360 or DPH 440, SHS 201, SHS 202+L, SHS 221, SHS 301, SHS 302, SHS 306, SHS 313, SHS 411, SHS 421, SHS 431 or 432 and SHS 450.

The speech-language pathology graduate program receives an average of 150 complete applications each year; 24-25 students are accepted annually. See admission requirements (regular and conditional status) stated in the Admission Requirements and Procedures section of the bulletin.

The following are mean GPAs and GRE scores and [ranges] for Speech-Language Pathology graduate students accepted into the program from three most recent years:

On-campus and in-state, off-campus clinical supervisors hold the CCC-S (Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology) from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and licensure from The Mississippi Department of Health.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award in Speech-Language Pathology is sponsored by the Hattiesburg Sertoma Club and is based on faculty selection of an exceptional student in the graduate program.

Assistantships are assigned by the school director.

New graduate students attend an annual fall orientation which covers topics that include code of ethics, clinical procedures, scope of practice, HIPAA and conflict resolution.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

Successful completion of the Master of Science (MS) degree graduate program in speech-language pathology at the University of Southern Mississippi will meet the requirements for certification in speech-language pathology at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Certification by ASHA is required by Mississippi as well as by most states to acquire a state license to practice the profession of speech-language pathology or for employment as a certified/licensed speech-language pathologist.  The University of Southern Mississippi highly recommends that you contact the appropriate state licensing board in the state or locality in which you wish to practice or be employed to determine whether the program you are considering will meet the state’s licensing requirement as we are unable to determine that state licensure requirements are met in states outside of Mississippi.  Information about various licensures for all states can be located through the sites listed below:

Connecticut's 061 Speech and Language Pathologist Endorsement

The following instructions apply to those who have completed the Neag School's Speech and Language Pathologist program.

Please note that the state educator certification regulations may change frequently. Regardless of your career plans, it is in your best interest that you submit the application for state certification within 30 days after graduation from the Neag School.

Please note: The CSDE will not process your paperwork until you complete the Department of Public Health (DPH) required SPE and obtain your health license OR a letter from the DPH stating that you have met all requirements and are eligible for a year of Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) employment. Please hold onto this form/letter and send it together with your health license.

Certification Process

SLP Candidate applies online through the Connecticut Educator Certification System (CECS) .

• During the application, you will select your certificate or position type: Special Services
• You will then select your endorsement area: 061 Speech and Language Pathologist
• Select your bachelor’s degree and save
• The system will ask if you have college/university coursework/degree that is not shown, and you will click Yes
• Add master’s degree
• When asked whether or not you have graduated with your master’s, you can check, “Yes” even though your degree will not officially be posted until later this month. The official conferral date will be May 5, 2024. If you have already applied for certification and checked “No”, that is fine too.
• Professional History page asks, “Do you have any teaching, administrative, and/or special services experience that is not shown (considered experience under a valid teaching certificate). Answer No
• Continue with questions until complete.
• Pay $50 nonrefundable application review fee with a MasterCard, Visa, or Discover Card.
• After submitting payment, you should receive a confirmation email. If you don’t receive one, check your spam folder.

After master’s degree is posted on transcript in Student Admin (typically late May/early June):

• The Neag School of Education Certification Officer will submit the institutional recommendation for certification to CSDE. Candidates are eligible for Initial Educator Certificate .
• If possible, mail your official transcript to CSDE for review. Due to the large volume of e-transcripts the Bureau receives daily, the e-transcript may expire before they are able to download and scan it into your file.
• Once all application materials have been received and reviewed (official transcripts, etc.), CSDE will send applicants a credential letter via email with a request for the fee balance.
• The certificate will be issued with the date of application or when all program requirements have been met.

Human performance.

Human Performance Specialists focus on the application of scientific processes to improve individual and team athletic performance, and decrease injury risk among all populations. These professionals may work across the breadth of scientific disciplines or be a specialist practitioner, who has training and/or applied experiences predominantly within one or more specific scientific discipline area(s) relevant to sport science, sports performance, and injury prevention.

Human Performance Specialists work with other healthcare specialists, such as athletic trainers, orthopedic surgeons, and team physicians, to maximize individual and team athletic success. Employment is often found with professional sports teams or collegiate athletic programs, and more opportunities will be available to those with advanced degrees in exercise physiology, biomechanics, or applied health science.

Consider the U of I Fitness, Health and Human Performance degree emphasis  with the  College of Education, Health and Human Sciences.

The Integrated Sports Medicine Movement Analysis Laboratory (ISMMAL) and the Exercise Physiology Research Laboratory on the Moscow campus provide excellent opportunities for students to pursue undergraduate research that will enhance their applications to graduate degree programs previously mentioned.

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology

Audiology is the science of hearing, balance and related disorders. Audiologists are experts in the nonmedical diagnosis and management of disorders of the auditory and balance systems. They frequently work with other medical specialists, speech-language pathologists, educators, engineers, scientists and allied health professionals and technicians. In industrial audiology, audiologists plan and execute programs of hearing conservation for workers.

Clinical audiologists work in a variety of settings and can specialize in pediatrics, geriatrics, balance, cochlear implants, hearing aids, tinnitus and auditory processing, among other issues. Audiologists provide a number of services including:

• Evaluating hearing
• Counseling patients and their families and caregivers
• Fitting hearing aids
• Evaluating and treating balance disorders
• Determining an individual’s need for assistive devices
• Teaching communication strategies, including speech reading

Some colleges and universities offer an undergraduate degree in communication sciences and disorders (CSD); however, if you do not major in CSD, you may need to complete some prerequisites before applying to graduate school.

Audiologists must earn a doctoral degree (an AuD) from a program accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation  and get a passing score on a national examination .

Those individuals who have a graduate degree with major emphasis in audiology (e.g. AuD) may become certified by the Council for Clinical Certification , which issues Certificates of Clinical Competence for both audiology and speech-language pathology.

In almost all states, a current license in audiology or speech-language pathology is also required to practice.

Speech-Language Pathology is the study and treatment of human communication and its disorders. Speech-language pathologists work with the full range of human communication to evaluate, diagnose and treat speech, language and swallowing disorders in individuals of all ages, from infants to the elderly. Speech-language pathologists often work as part of a team, which may include teachers, physicians, audiologists, psychologists, social workers and rehabilitation counselors.

Their responsibilities may include:

• Preparing future professionals in colleges and universities
• Managing agencies, clinics or private practices
• Engaging in research to enhance knowledge about human communication processes
• Developing new methods and equipment to evaluate problems. Establish more effective treatments
• Investigating behavioral patterns associated with communication disorders
• Working with employees to improve communication with their customers

Speech-language pathologists must:

• Earn a graduate degree in speech-language pathology from a program accredited by the  Council on Academic Accreditation
• Complete a  supervised postgraduate clinical fellowship
• Get a passing score on a national examination

Those individuals who have a graduate degree with major emphasis in speech-language pathology may become certified by the Council for Clinical Certification , which issues certificates of clinical competence for both audiology and speech-language pathology.

Explosions have been reported in Ukraine's capital city. 

Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to take shelter. 

"Explosions in the city. Air defence forces are working. Stay in shelters," he said on Telegram. 

The Ukrainian air force has also reported a drone threat in the area. 

Footage has emerged purporting to show the moment a tank was set alight at a Russian border checkpoint.

The clip shows a tank being fired on as it moves from the Ukrainian side to the checkpoint.

The location in Belgorod is often used for prisoner exchanges.

Russian state media has aired footage of the ongoing evacuations in the Kursk region as Ukraine's incursion continues. 

According to the video report, dozens of people from the Glushkovsky district were evacuated to facilities in safe areas.

The report also mentioned a family from Sudzha who claimed to have escaped from an attack by a Ukrainian drone as it hit their car.

"I heard an explosion, glass shattered and I didn't even understand what happened", an evacuee from Sudzha said.

Earlier today, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv's troops had captured the Russian town. 

The town is the largest that Ukraine has claimed control over so far, with a pre-war population of around 5,000 people. 

Yesterday, a Ukrainian news channel released a video appearing to show soldiers taking down Russian flags from an administrative building in the town, shouting "glory to Ukraine, glory to heroes".

Air-to-surface missiles have been used to target Ukrainian troops in Kursk, the Russian defence ministry said. 

In a post on Telegram, it said a helicopter crew delivered the strikes at "manpower, armoured hardware and a motor vehicles cluster" belonging to Ukrainian forces. 

"After the use of aviation strike assets, the crews performed a manoeuvre, releasing decoy flares, and returned to the departure airfield," it added.  ِ

Ukrainian troops launched their invasion of the Russian region last week. 

A ballerina has been jailed in Russia for 12 years after donating £40 to a charity supporting Ukraine. 

US-Russian citizen Ksenia Karelina was accused of treason when she was arrested in Yekaterinburg, in southwestern Russia, in February.

The 33-year-old admitted the charge at a closed trial in the city earlier this month, according to Russian news agencies.

Today, Karelina appeared in court in a white sweatshirt and blue jeans, sitting calmly in a glass courtroom cage to receive her sentence.

Three people, including a 15-year-old and an 18-year-old, have been detained for setting fire to military vehicles on behalf of Russia, Ukraine's national police has said. 

Russian special services promised money for the destroyed cars, with the attackers recording the fires on the phones to report back to them, the force said . 

The teenagers operated in the Ivano-Frankivsk region, targeting three military SUVs that were undergoing maintenance after being used on the frontline.

"The young men cycled around the territory of the district, where they were tracking the cars of the Ukrainian troops," the police said. 

"After identifying potential targets, the attackers photographed them and sent them to the customer for approval.

"Then, according to the instructions of the curator, the participants made a highly flammable mixture, poured it over military vehicles and set them on fire." 

In Kharkiv, a 22-year-old "contract deserter" was detained for setting fire to six SUVs after being offered money by Russian intelligence, it added. 

It said all the perpetrators were in custody and face eight to 10 years in prison. 

A key ally of Vladimir Putin has urged Ukraine and Russia to end their conflict to avoid the war spilling over into Belarus. 

Speaking to Russian state television, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko said only "high-ranking people of American origin" wanted the war to continue. 

The West, he said, was encouraging Kyiv to fight because it wants Ukraine and Russia to "destroy each other". 

Mr Lukashenko has positioned himself as a main backer of Mr Putin since the Russian president ordered the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 - part of which was staged from Belarusian soil.

But, instead of allowing battles to rage on, he urged for talks to take place. 

"Let's sit down at the negotiating table and end this brawl," he said. 

"Neither the Ukrainian people, nor the Russians, nor the Belarusians need it. They (the West) need it." 

Excerpts of the nearly two-hour interview were published on the Belarusian presidential website earlier today. 

He was speaking after Ukraine launched its invasion of Russia's Kursk region last week. 

Kyiv has said its forces have advanced 35km (22 miles) into Russia since the incursion began and continue to gain ground.

But, Mr Lukashenko suggested, without providing evidence, that Ukraine could have plans to attack Belarus. 

He said Minsk would not allow Ukrainian troops to "trample on our country".

He suggested that the West was betting that the destabilising situation in Kursk would encourage a troop mobilisation in both Belarus and Russia and "shake up society from within".

"We don't want escalation and we don't want a war against the whole of NATO. We don't want that," he said.

But if Ukraine does provoke Belarus, he cautioned, "we'll have no other choice". 

On Saturday, Minsk said it was sending troops to reinforce its southern border with Ukraine after accusing Kyiv of violating its airspace with drones.

Kyiv said it had seen no signs of such a build-up.

At least two people have been killed and 12 more have been injured in Russian guided bomb attacks, Ukrainian authorities have said. 

The strike hit a civilian area in Kupiansk in Ukraine's northeastern Kharkiv region earlier today, regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said. 

A warehouse was also set alight in the attack, with six employees suffering injuries, regional prosecutors added. 

Six more people, including a 12-year-old child, were wounded in the Zolochiv village when Russian forces dropped two bombs, the regional police said.  

Administrative buildings, a nursery, and more than 20 homes were damaged, the police added.

Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, and the surrounding region have long been targeted by Russian strikes. 

For months, Moscow's troops have been pummelling Ukraine's border regions with highly destructive guided bombs.

Moscow denies targeting civilians or civilian infrastructure during the war, but thousands have been killed and injured in its strikes. 

While Kyiv's troops push ahead with their invasion of Russia's Kursk region, shelling has continued in parts of Ukraine. 

In Horlivka, in the eastern Donetsk region, locals have been clearing rubble after a recent attack. 

Several houses have been destroyed in the town, which is located in part of Donetsk that has been occupied by Moscow's forces. 

Russian-installed authorities blamed the Ukrainian military for the shelling.
