DESCRIBE A VISIT TO A FRIEND’S HOUSE

This is a drafted script for a one to two minute IELTS oe TOEFL talk on a specific topic.

The topic is describing a visit to a friend’s house.

The student will usually be allowed to take a few brief notes about the topic once he has been informed of it.

Speaking on any topic for one or two minutes is always excellent speaking practice for a student of the English language, even if it is not an actual test or assessment.

This is the script:

When visiting my friend at his home, there is a certain protocol and etiquette to follow.

My friend lives with his siblings and parents at a house not far from me and in fact, I often go there.  Not everyday but perhaps once or twice a week and he visits my house too.

His parents are very welcoming and sometimes I feel his home is like my second home.

There are, of course, house rules which must be respected.  Every family has them to a varying degree.

It seems to me there are four things which I need to talk about as I describe a visit to my friend’s house.

The first has to be about punctuality and expected time of arrival.

In my country, it is considered very impolite to be late, especially if it is an invitation to join the family for lunch  or other special invitiation.

It is important to keep in mind that my friend and his family are the host and I am rhe guest.

On a casual visit, it may not matter at all if you are early or late but for a formal occasion, no doubt if you know you are going to be late, always text or call to your host to let them know.

Once you have arrived, it’s okay of course to address your friend by his first name or nickname but certainly not his parents.

It will be most appropriate to address them by the family name (for example, Good afternoon Mr and Mrs Jones).

You can address them as Sir and Madam but that’s way too formal and really not necessary.

The third consideration is Behaviour.

Handshakes or other informal engagements such as clench grasping or high-five/toss are done in conjunction with the polite oral introductions and you must remember again that there are house rules to be followed.

You may be expected to remove your shoes as you enter the house, wash your hands before dinner, dress appropiately and join in prayers at the dinner table, never be ungrateful for what you receive in the hospitality.

The fourth and last thing to mention is about bringing a gift for the host family.

Most of the time, this is not necessary at all but if your friend’s family have invited you to join for dinner, bringing a cake, cookies or some soft drinks would perhaps not be amiss.

The gift has not got to be a token one such as a present or in any way expensive.

A small inexpensive gift will be seen as a simple way of saying thank you for the hospitality .

I am off to visit my friend now.  We are going to do some homework together and play a computer game.

My friend’s father is picking me up.  So kind.

Next week, my friend is going to have a sleepover at my house.

That’s the end of my short speech.  Thank you.

Staying at a Friend’s House

 Once, my parents had to go out of town for a business meeting, so I was allowed to stay at my friend Tara’s house. Tara and I decided to invite more friends and have a slumber party. My parents dropped me off at Tara’s place in the evening. We had tea and then we prepared for the party. We took five sleeping bags because our friends Mellany, Stacey and Lila were also coming. We made popcorn and got some orange juice. By 8 o’clock all our friends came. We went out to the backyard to toast marshmallows. After that we went to Tara’s room and played ‘Truth or Dare.’ Then we got into our sleeping bags in a circle and lit a candle in the middle. All of us told scary stories in turn. After that we were too scared to sleep because it was raining heavily outside. So we planned to scare Tara’s older sister, Natasha. We painted a spooky face on my sleeping bag with glow-in-the-dark paints. Then we all yelled and dashed into her room with our ‘Monster.’ Natasha was scared out of her wits. All of us were 0. tired, so we went to bed, I wish we can have a jolly sleepover like that again. I can still remember Lila screaming in her sleep.

COMPOSITION: A visit to a friend’s house

It was the last children’s day. Victor had told me that she would like me to visit her. When the day came, I got dressed and set off for her house. Victor felt very happy when he saw me. She received me warmly.

 Victor and the members of her family are hospitable. I was very much impressed by their hospitality. Victor’s parents are very lovely and kind hearted. They took good care of me. I was treated to a delicious meal of pounded yam and Egusi Soup worth plenty of bush meat. After the real, victor’s father, a retired teacher called me very close to him and got me seated by his side. He advised me to be good and face my studies. I listened attentively as he spoke.

Victor’s younger brother is also a very loveable ten years old boy. He is fair, handsome and nice. We played together and I left for my house. He presented to me a nice handkerchief.

I benefited greatly from visiting Victor.  i learnt to be good to other people and to always welcome people warmly. The visit has also brought victors and I very close.  We are now best of friends.

Families are a source of support and comfort to us, sharing their wisdom and providing us company in our journey of life. Spending time with family members can lighten our mood and provide us with a respite from the stress of daily life, which is why visiting them is an enjoyable experience. In this light, I would like to talk about visiting my maternal uncle’s home. My uncle lives in a housing complex situated on the southern fringes of the city. He has been living there for quite some years now and I have some fond memories of spending time there. My uncle, who is my mother’s younger brother, happens to live with his elderly parents, my maternal grandparents, and his older brother.

The flat they reside in is located on the second floor of the first building nearest the gate of the complex. This allows them a nice view of the road and the local pond from their balcony. Their flat is quite airy and spacious. They have three large bedrooms, a common area containing the living room and dining room, a small kitchen, and three bathrooms.

What I like the most about visiting my relatives is that I get the opportunity of spending time with them in spite of all our busy schedules. My grandmother always lovingly prepares a lot of food which I look forward to on every visit. My uncle, on the other hand, enjoys baking as a hobby and when I visit, we make it a point to bake something together, which I revel in. My grandmother and my uncles own a vast collection of books which I also enjoy perusing through or borrowing whenever I visit them.

The pandemic has made it difficult for me to visit my relatives as frequently as I would like. On the rare occasions that I have been able to visit them, however, the time I spent has been truly memorable and I look forward to visiting them more often if our schedules permit.

Families are a blessing to us and people who stand as our pillars and help us during our tough times. There’s no greater wealth than having a supportive family. Similarly, relatives who actually respect connections for what they are, are rare.

A couple of months back, I recently visited Mumbai to attend one of my second cousin’s weddings, which was a 3-day affair. As they were extremely illustrious and well off, the wedding took place on the huge lawn back in their exquisite palace-like home overlooking the stunning Juhu beach. The 4000 square-feet palatial house was elegantly decorated with its facade exuding high-end design and luxury. In addition, the interior of the house was dolled up with incredible double-floored crystal chandeliers, impressive modern interiors, mini home-theater, 5 master bedrooms, solid glass doors through the hallway with an amazing view of the lush-green courtyards, and play area.

I was mesmerized by the sophisticated corners of this palatial house, which brought an aura of royal goodness. My four-day stay at this luxurious mansion was absolutely fantastic. Honestly, this visit was memorable for many reasons; first, because this was the first time after the demise of my grandparents, we gathered as a family to attend a wedding. Second, I had a blast with everyone in each ritual, and third, it was the first time I witnessed the majestic grandeur of my relative’s gorgeous villa.

Meaning: an apparent misfortune that eventually has good results. Eg: The dog was a blessing in disguise who came in front of the car and prevented the accident.

Meaning: wealthy Eg: Although Kay belonged to a well-off family, she lived a poor lifestyle.

Meaning: the principal front of a building that faces onto a street or open space Eg: The facade of the building is yet to be constructed.

• Courtyard 

Meaning: an unroofed area that is completely or partially enclosed by walls or buildings, typically one Eg: The teacher organized her yoga sessions in the courtyard.

Meaning: a person’s death Eg: I had to take urgent leave due to my grandmother’s demise.

Sample answer: 

A couple of months ago I went to meet my best friend for lunch and she works in a design company, so I met her at her office and she showed me around it before we went out to eat.

She is a fashion designer, and her office, or studio, is in a converted industrial building. I think it might have been a warehouse or factory or something like that a long time ago, but it’s since been converted into commercial office space which is rented by various companies.

Her office is quite spartan, not much office furniture, but plenty of open space, with a large designer’s drawing desk, an ergonomic chair, some bookshelves with plants, books, and other objects on them. There are lights which hang down from the ceiling which illuminate the different work areas she has organized within the space – it’s very open and airy and she loves working there.

I have to admit that I was quite inspired, and envious when I first saw her workspace, I mean my office is nothing like that, it’s more like a cubicle, the usual corporate style, but then I’m not a designer. I would love to have a workplace like my friends – I think it would be such a nicer environment to work in, especially on long work days, which I have a lot of every month when I have to work late.

In fact, I prefer to take work home when I’m very busy at work because I don’t like spending so long in my own office, it’s a bit drab and boring. I’d much prefer to have something like my friend has.

Whether you're crashing with a friend for convenience, invited for a leisurely stay at a cousin's summer home, or headed to your future in-laws' place for the first overnight visit, house guest etiquette matters. And if you've ever hosted family or friends for an extended stay, you know just how refreshing a well-behaved, respectful, game, and grateful house guest is—and how exhausting a not-so-awesome one can be.

Here are 11 house guest etiquette rules to follow, no matter who you're staying with or how long you plan to be there. (Trust us, this is how you get invited back.)

Be Clear About How Long You're Staying

Make sure you clear the duration of you stay with your hosts as far in advance as possible—at their invitation, of course. Don't be vague or hope to extend your stay once you arrive. Of course, there is a chance they might extend an offer, but don't make assumptions. If your BFF says they'll be busy after Labor Day, book your return ticket to leave a full day before so they have some time to themself. The last thing you want to do is take advantage of your host.

Don't Show Up Unannounced

It's never a good idea to show up without notice—or, even worse, to show up with a pet, child, significant other, or friend (even if it's a mutual friend) in tow, unless you've cleared it with your host beforehand. You may call it spontaneous and fun, but your cousin and their spouse may call it inconvenient.

Bring a Thoughtful Gift

A grateful guest always brings their host a gift —a little something to show their gratitude. However, there's no need to haul something huge or extravagant all the way there. A local treat from your hometown bakery, a beautiful coffee table book, flowers, a nice candle, or bottle of wine all work perfectly. Headed to someone's vacation house? Get them something on theme: beach towels or a cocktail-themed gift would be perfect.

Follow House Rules

When you arrive, gently inquire about how things are done to avoid any misunderstandings. What time does everyone usually wake up and go to bed? Anything you should know about the kids or pets? Should you leave the thermostat alone? Pick up on other house rules by being in tune with your hosts. This could mean observing whether or not you should take your shoes off indoors or if you should keep your phone away from the dinner table. Also, refrain from finishing the coffee or milk (but if you do, replace it).

Limit Your Phone Use

Spending too much time with your face in a screen will make your hosts feel like they're boring you (and, honestly, you might be boring them). It makes your company feel like there's somewhere else you'd rather be, or someone else you'd rather be spending time with. Try to limit screen time and only check emails, texts, and social media in the privacy of your own room.

Act More Appropriate Than Usual

Before you walk down the hall in only a towel, curse, tell inappropriate jokes, or come downstairs for breakfast in your PJs, take cues from your host. When in doubt, err on the side of modesty. If you're planning a dinner out with your hosts, ask what attire is appropriate for the restaurant (e.g. no jeans) so you can pack accordingly.

Be Extremely Helpful

Unhelpful guests are rarely invited back. Things you should offer to do: Help prep or cook meals; set the table and do the dishes; offer to drive; occupy the kids while their parents take a well-deserved nap; fix a little something around the house if you have the skills; or take the dog for a walk. Even if you're turned down, the hosts will appreciate the gesture.

Things you should do without asking for a thumbs up: Clear your dishes when you're done eating; buy some groceries and maybe the fixings for cocktails; get your own kids out of the house for an hour or two; fill up the tank if you borrow the car; strip your sheets at the end of your stay (unless you're told otherwise).

Be (at Least Somewhat) Self-Sufficient

Your hosts might be happy to see a Broadway show or the Lincoln Memorial for the third time, but they may also choose to get some things done while you are out and about. Your friend might actually be working during the day, so being able to entertain yourself will be a godsend for both of you. If you're staying for more than three days, call up other friends who live in the city, bring some work of your own to do, or be okay exploring on your own. Let your host know your plans and when you think you will get back.

Bring Your Own Toiletries

Don't expect to use any of your hosts' toiletries or other items. If you realize you've forgotten to pack toothpaste, inquire about where you can buy a new tube. They'll likely be happy to offer theirs, but first demonstrate that you're not a mooch.

Bring Your Own Ideas

Hosting can be a lot of work—from getting the house ready to making sure everyone is comfortable throughout the stay. Often, visitors also expect hosts to plan activities for everyone. So, one great way you could lessen the burden on your gracious host is to arrive ready with a list of ideas of things you might want to do or see—or even where you might want to eat. That way, they won't feel solely responsible for keeping you entertained during your trip.

Restock the Groceries You Used

A good host will likely make sure you've always got something to eat and drink while you're staying with them. Before you leave, it'd be a great idea to replace some of the items you consumed during your stay and help restock your host's pantry. For example, maybe you used their honey or milk every morning for you tea or coffee. Even if they told you to help yourself, replacing the honey, milk, tea, coffee, and other items like that would be a super nice—and definitely appreciated—gesture.

Leave Things Cleaner Than You Found Them

If there's one thing to take away from these etiquette tips, it should be this: Leave the place as clean as possible. The last thing you want is for your host to have to hire a cleaner after your stay.

On your last day, triple-check the bedroom and bathroom for your belongings. Strip the sheets and put them in a pillowcase at the foot of the bed. Do a quick wipe-down of the counters in the bathroom for toothpaste, extra cups, or loose hair. And, of course, return any items to their place, like a book you borrowed from the bookshelf.

Say Thank You

Thank your host three times: when you arrive, when you're about to leave, and once more after you've gone with a handwritten thank-you note . Here, an email won't cut it. Throw in a specific detail about how much fun you had doing a certain activity, how hard you laughed at a particular story, or how delicious a specific meal was. Finish with an offer to open up your own next time. For an optional but memorable thank you, pick up a fresh bouquet of flowers and leave them in a vase on the kitchen counter with your note before you leave. Otherwise, mail your card within two or three days of your visit.

Fact-checking warnings from Democrats about Project 2025 and Donald Trump

Project 2025 has a starring role in this week’s Democratic National Convention.

And it was front and center on Night 1.

“This is Project 2025,” Michigan state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, D-Royal Oak, said as she laid a hardbound copy of the 900-page document on the lectern. “Over the next four nights, you are going to hear a lot about what is in this 900-page document. Why? Because this is the Republican blueprint for a second Trump term.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee, has warned Americans about “Trump’s Project 2025” agenda — even though former President Donald Trump doesn’t claim the conservative presidential transition document.

“Donald Trump wants to take our country backward,” Harris said July 23 in Milwaukee. “He and his extreme Project 2025 agenda will weaken the middle class. Like, we know we got to take this seriously, and can you believe they put that thing in writing?”

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Harris’ running mate, has joined in on the talking point.

“Don’t believe (Trump) when he’s playing dumb about this Project 2025. He knows exactly what it’ll do,” Walz said Aug. 9 in Glendale, Arizona.

Trump’s campaign has worked to build distance from the project, which the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank, led with contributions from dozens of conservative groups.

Much of the plan calls for extensive executive-branch overhauls and draws on both long-standing conservative principles, such as tax cuts, and more recent culture war issues. It lays out recommendations for disbanding the Commerce and Education departments, eliminating certain climate protections and consolidating more power to the president.

Project 2025 offers a sweeping vision for a Republican-led executive branch, and some of its policies mirror Trump’s 2024 agenda, But Harris and her presidential campaign have at times gone too far in describing what the project calls for and how closely the plans overlap with Trump’s campaign.

PolitiFact researched Harris’ warnings about how the plan would affect reproductive rights, federal entitlement programs and education, just as we did for President Joe Biden’s Project 2025 rhetoric. Here’s what the project does and doesn’t call for, and how it squares with Trump’s positions.

Are Trump and Project 2025 connected?

To distance himself from Project 2025 amid the Democratic attacks, Trump wrote on Truth Social that he “knows nothing” about it and has “no idea” who is in charge of it. (CNN identified at least 140 former advisers from the Trump administration who have been involved.)

The Heritage Foundation sought contributions from more than 100 conservative organizations for its policy vision for the next Republican presidency, which was published in 2023.

Project 2025 is now winding down some of its policy operations, and director Paul Dans, a former Trump administration official, is stepping down, The Washington Post reported July 30. Trump campaign managers Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita denounced the document.

However, Project 2025 contributors include a number of high-ranking officials from Trump’s first administration, including former White House adviser Peter Navarro and former Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson.

A recently released recording of Russell Vought, a Project 2025 author and the former director of Trump’s Office of Management and Budget, showed Vought saying Trump’s “very supportive of what we do.” He said Trump was only distancing himself because Democrats were making a bogeyman out of the document.

Project 2025 wouldn’t ban abortion outright, but would curtail access

The Harris campaign shared a graphic on X that claimed “Trump’s Project 2025 plan for workers” would “go after birth control and ban abortion nationwide.”

The plan doesn’t call to ban abortion nationwide, though its recommendations could curtail some contraceptives and limit abortion access.

What’s known about Trump’s abortion agenda neither lines up with Harris’ description nor Project 2025’s wish list.

Project 2025 says the Department of Health and Human Services Department should “return to being known as the Department of Life by explicitly rejecting the notion that abortion is health care.”

It recommends that the Food and Drug Administration reverse its 2000 approval of mifepristone, the first pill taken in a two-drug regimen for a medication abortion. Medication is the most common form of abortion in the U.S. — accounting for around 63 percent in 2023.

If mifepristone were to remain approved, Project 2025 recommends new rules, such as cutting its use from 10 weeks into pregnancy to seven. It would have to be provided to patients in person — part of the group’s efforts to limit access to the drug by mail. In June, the U.S. Supreme Court rejected a legal challenge to mifepristone’s FDA approval over procedural grounds.

WATCH: Trump’s plans for health care and reproductive rights if he returns to White House The manual also calls for the Justice Department to enforce the 1873 Comstock Act on mifepristone, which bans the mailing of “obscene” materials. Abortion access supporters fear that a strict interpretation of the law could go further to ban mailing the materials used in procedural abortions, such as surgical instruments and equipment.

The plan proposes withholding federal money from states that don’t report to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention how many abortions take place within their borders. The plan also would prohibit abortion providers, such as Planned Parenthood, from receiving Medicaid funds. It also calls for the Department of Health and Human Services to ensure that the training of medical professionals, including doctors and nurses, omits abortion training.

The document says some forms of emergency contraception — particularly Ella, a pill that can be taken within five days of unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy — should be excluded from no-cost coverage. The Affordable Care Act requires most private health insurers to cover recommended preventive services, which involves a range of birth control methods, including emergency contraception.

Trump has recently said states should decide abortion regulations and that he wouldn’t block access to contraceptives. Trump said during his June 27 debate with Biden that he wouldn’t ban mifepristone after the Supreme Court “approved” it. But the court rejected the lawsuit based on standing, not the case’s merits. He has not weighed in on the Comstock Act or said whether he supports it being used to block abortion medication, or other kinds of abortions.

Project 2025 doesn’t call for cutting Social Security, but proposes some changes to Medicare

“When you read (Project 2025),” Harris told a crowd July 23 in Wisconsin, “you will see, Donald Trump intends to cut Social Security and Medicare.”

The Project 2025 document does not call for Social Security cuts. None of its 10 references to Social Security addresses plans for cutting the program.

Harris also misleads about Trump’s Social Security views.

In his earlier campaigns and before he was a politician, Trump said about a half-dozen times that he’s open to major overhauls of Social Security, including cuts and privatization. More recently, in a March 2024 CNBC interview, Trump said of entitlement programs such as Social Security, “There’s a lot you can do in terms of entitlements, in terms of cutting.” However, he quickly walked that statement back, and his CNBC comment stands at odds with essentially everything else Trump has said during the 2024 presidential campaign.

Trump’s campaign website says that not “a single penny” should be cut from Social Security. We rated Harris’ claim that Trump intends to cut Social Security Mostly False.

Project 2025 does propose changes to Medicare, including making Medicare Advantage, the private insurance offering in Medicare, the “default” enrollment option. Unlike Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage plans have provider networks and can also require prior authorization, meaning that the plan can approve or deny certain services. Original Medicare plans don’t have prior authorization requirements.

The manual also calls for repealing health policies enacted under Biden, such as the Inflation Reduction Act. The law enabled Medicare to negotiate with drugmakers for the first time in history, and recently resulted in an agreement with drug companies to lower the prices of 10 expensive prescriptions for Medicare enrollees.

Trump, however, has said repeatedly during the 2024 presidential campaign that he will not cut Medicare.

Project 2025 would eliminate the Education Department, which Trump supports

The Harris campaign said Project 2025 would “eliminate the U.S. Department of Education” — and that’s accurate. Project 2025 says federal education policy “should be limited and, ultimately, the federal Department of Education should be eliminated.” The plan scales back the federal government’s role in education policy and devolves the functions that remain to other agencies.

Aside from eliminating the department, the project also proposes scrapping the Biden administration’s Title IX revision, which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It also would let states opt out of federal education programs and calls for passing a federal parents’ bill of rights similar to ones passed in some Republican-led state legislatures.

Republicans, including Trump, have pledged to close the department, which gained its status in 1979 within Democratic President Jimmy Carter’s presidential Cabinet.

In one of his Agenda 47 policy videos, Trump promised to close the department and “to send all education work and needs back to the states.” Eliminating the department would have to go through Congress.

What Project 2025, Trump would do on overtime pay

In the graphic, the Harris campaign says Project 2025 allows “employers to stop paying workers for overtime work.”

The plan doesn’t call for banning overtime wages. It recommends changes to some Occupational Safety and Health Administration, or OSHA, regulations and to overtime rules. Some changes, if enacted, could result in some people losing overtime protections, experts told us.

The document proposes that the Labor Department maintain an overtime threshold “that does not punish businesses in lower-cost regions (e.g., the southeast United States).” This threshold is the amount of money executive, administrative or professional employees need to make for an employer to exempt them from overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.

In 2019, the Trump’s administration finalized a rule that expanded overtime pay eligibility to most salaried workers earning less than about $35,568, which it said made about 1.3 million more workers eligible for overtime pay. The Trump-era threshold is high enough to cover most line workers in lower-cost regions, Project 2025 said.

The Biden administration raised that threshold to $43,888 beginning July 1, and that will rise to $58,656 on Jan. 1, 2025. That would grant overtime eligibility to about 4 million workers, the Labor Department said.

It’s unclear how many workers Project 2025’s proposal to return to the Trump-era overtime threshold in some parts of the country would affect, but experts said some would presumably lose the right to overtime wages.

Other overtime proposals in Project 2025’s plan include allowing some workers to choose to accumulate paid time off instead of overtime pay, or to work more hours in one week and fewer in the next, rather than receive overtime.

Trump’s past with overtime pay is complicated. In 2016, the Obama administration said it would raise the overtime to salaried workers earning less than $47,476 a year, about double the exemption level set in 2004 of $23,660 a year.

But when a judge blocked the Obama rule, the Trump administration didn’t challenge the court ruling. Instead it set its own overtime threshold, which raised the amount, but by less than Obama.

Begin by discussing the importance of politeness in social interactions, especially when visiting a friend's house. Introduce common phrases and vocabulary used for making requests and offers, such as “Could I have…?”, “May I use…?”, or “Would you like…?”. Use role-playing or dialogues to demonstrate these phrases in context.

Brainstorming Scenarios for Storyboards

A visit to a friend’s house is memorable. Once I was invited by my friend shree charan and so I went with him to his house in the village Kothar. There I spent a week with him.

Shreecharan and the members of his family are quite hospitable. I was very much impressed by their hospitality. Shreecharan’s mother is a very soft-hearted lady. She is kind and sympathetic in spirit. She took all possible care of me. She took all care of my morning-tea, breakfast, lunch, dinner, evening-tea and supper. Every night she insisted on me to drink a glass of warm milk with sugar just before I began to sleep.

Shreecharan’s father is a retired School Sub-Inspector. Many times, he called me very close to him and got me seated by his side. He made very kind quarries of me and of all others of my home. He is a very loving gentleman.

His sister Narmada is just on the verga of fourteen. She is fair, handsome and lovable. She knows music and dancing. Every evening she played on her harmonium and sang very nice songs for me. Thus, she gave me a lot of amusement. Narmada is beautiful as her name. There is cadence in her walk and music in her voice. She presented me a nice handkerchief which she carefully knitted for me all the week.

Shreecharan himself was busy for me. At all times he looked to my comforts. Thus, I spent a happy week with my friend and his family.

Conclusion:

This visit to my friend’s house was really very important for me. Here we developed a deep affection and cordiality. So, at the moment of departure their eyes were full of tears and mine too. We became so close that at the time of parting I left as if I tore myself a way from them.

I was battling cancer while starring on Broadway and no one knew

I knew I wanted to be on Broadway since age 6, when I saw my first musical. Growing up, that goal informed almost every decision I made: the kind of music I listened to, the books I read, and even where I went to college. After graduating, I moved to New York City to pursue this dream.

That same year I tested positive for the BRCA1 gene . The BRCA1 mutation means you have a 50% chance of developing breast cancer by age 70, and also a higher risk of other cancers, like ovarian cancer , according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention . I got tested because my mother had recently survived her second battle with breast cancer, and my grandmother and her sister both died of ovarian cancer. When the results came back positive, I was disappointed and sad, but I adapted my lifestyle accordingly. I got screened regularly. I started exercising, and changed my diet to limit my risk. Genetically, I couldn’t do much. Epigenetically, I did everything in my power to prevent the gene from presenting itself. 

Meanwhile, I worked. Eventually I made my Broadway debut at the age of 29. It was short-lived, but then I got a role on “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” on Netflix, where I remained for the next seven years. All the while, I was maintaining the healthy habits I’d established in the wake of testing positive for the BRCA1 gene, with one exception: My doctors had started advising me, as I got older, to remove my fallopian tubes, but I always came up with excuses to put the surgery off. 

When “Kimmy” was over, I realized just how much I missed the stage. As luck would have it I was soon asked to join the cast of a new musical adaptation of “The Great Gatsby” on Broadway as Myrtle Wilson. For those who haven’t read the book in a while (or ever, as was my case, though I still somehow managed to graduate high school), Myrtle is married to the poor gas station owner and dreams of a better life with Tom Buchanan. In the musical, Myrtle gets a big, splashy, musical comedy number in Act 1 and a gut-wrenching 11 o’clock ballad in Act 2. It was every Broadway fantasy I had ever dreamed of. The show was already getting a lot of attention and it hadn’t even opened.

But a month or so before rehearsals began, my doctors again recommended I go through with removing my fallopian tubes. With Broadway rehearsals starting soon, and a grueling show schedule ahead of me, I decided to just go for it.  I had the procedure 10 days before rehearsals started. Now, I thought, I could put it out of my head.

Two weeks later, I was at home practicing my lines when the phone rang. It was my doctor. They had found cancer in one of my fallopian tubes. Thankfully, it was caught early, but the standard of care was an immediate full hysterectomy, oophorectomy, and six rounds of chemotherapy every three weeks. I couldn’t believe what he was telling me. After I could compose myself, I nervously asked, “Can I still do ‘Gatsby’?”

We got out our calendars. “Gatsby” was to rehearse for two more weeks before a four-week “previews” period — a grueling process where the cast rehearses changes to the show by day and performs them for an audience that evening. Then, the big opening night. I knew I had three days off soon, so I arranged to have the surgery then, and if the pathology reports came back clean, the doctors could let me delay starting chemo until after opening night.

I went into rehearsal and didn’t tell anyone. Mostly because I was in denial. If I said it out loud, it would be true. That I have cancer. That I am rehearsing a Broadway show while being treated for cancer. Or maybe I thought someone would try and take my dream away from me.

I found myself living a secret double life. In the early mornings I would meet with doctors, get blood work done and then run down the street to Broadway rehearsals, stashing my hospital bracelets along the way. Two weeks after my diagnoses, I secretly got a full hysterectomy, oophorectomy and cervix removal. Four days after that, I was on stage singing and dancing in full costumes and wigs like nothing had happened. (For the record, I do not recommend this.) I hid my scars with compression garments underneath my costumes, and I hid my pain too.

As an actor opening a new Broadway show, my job was to do things like learn a whole new set of lyrics a few hours before being expected to perform them flawlessly in front of a sold-out audience. As a secret cancer patient, I had to experience one of my first hot flashes alone on stage while 1,400 people watched. I would never know if the sensations I was feeling were just nerves, a side effect of a new medication, or both. I never knew if I was crying on stage because that’s what my character would do or because I was sad knowing I would lose my eyelashes and eyebrows soon.

Thankfully, two weeks into previews, the doctors called to say the pathology reports came back clean and I could perform on opening night. I was absolutely elated. Still, as my cast and crew looked for opening night outfits, I secretly looked for wigs and scarves in case I needed them. As people were telling their friends and family about this new Broadway show they were in, I was telling friends and family about what to expect in the next coming months. My colleagues met with stylists; I met with oncologists.

Opening night finally arrived. Minutes before the show was about to start, I finally found a moment to be by myself in my dressing room. I started to sob uncontrollably. I had been so focused on getting to this night, I don’t think I had ever fully allowed myself to acknowledge all I had been going through. But the show must go on. So I pulled myself together, put my costume on, circled up with my cast backstage for our pre-show ritual, and the curtains opened.

I walked to center stage at the end of Act 2 to sing my big solo. I was alone singing on a Broadway stage, just like I had always dreamed about. I’ve heard the journey of cancer described as incredibly lonely, and I’ve found that to be true. No matter how many people I have in my corner (and I have so many wonderful people), no matter how many people applaud for me or greet me at the stage door, no matter how many incredible cast members and crew surround me, this was ultimately something I had to do by myself.

And as I stood by myself on stage, just a spotlight on me and my secret hiding in plain sight, whatever I was feeling earlier melted away and was replaced with pride.

The next week, I told my cast the truth. In the months to come, I relied heavily on understudies until I took a leave of absence to finish out treatments. Drugs have thankfully come a long way in the past 10 years, and, while my experience wasn’t fun, it was not even close to what the women in my family had to go through. I even got to keep 50% of my hair.

I’m also comforted by the fact that soon I’ll be back on stage. And this time, I know I’ll be even stronger.

WASHINGTON — Multiple members of the Kennedy family denounced Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s decision to endorse former President Donald Trump, calling the move a "betrayal."

"We want an America filled with hope and bound together by a shared vision of a brighter future, a future defined by individual freedom, economic promise and national pride," said a statement signed by five of the former independent presidential candidate's siblings.

"We believe in Harris and Walz," the statement continued. "Our brother Bobby's decision to endorse Trump today is a betrayal of the values that our father and our family hold most dear. It is a sad ending to a sad story."

The statement includes signatures from Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, Courtney Kennedy, Kerry Kennedy, Chris Kennedy and Rory Kennedy.

Joe Kennedy III, a grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, reacted to the statement, sharing it on X and writing that it was "well said."

Separately, the former candidate's cousin Jack Schlossberg said that he has "never been less surprised in my life."

"Been saying it for over a year — RFKjr is for sale, works for Trump. Bedfellows and loving it," he posted to X. "Kamala Harris is for the people — the easiest decision of all time just got easier."

Schlossberg is the grandson of former President John F. Kennedy.

Many members of the Kennedy family have been publicly critical of the independent's presidential bid, instead vocalizing their support for first President Joe Biden and now Harris.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced on Friday that he would withdraw from the presidential race and back Trump. However, he said that he would only remove his name from the ballot in "about 10 battleground states where my presence would be a spoiler." He encouraged voters in states where he remains on the ballot to still support him.

"These are the principled causes that persuaded me to leave the Democratic Party and run as an independent, and now to throw my support to President Trump," he said during his Friday remarks. "The causes were: Free speech, the war in Ukraine, and the war on our children."

Harris campaign chair Jen O'Malley Dillon said in a statement that the Harris campaign is for "any American out there who is tired of Donald Trump and looking for a new way forward."

"Even if we do not agree on every issue, Kamala Harris knows there is more that unites us than divides us: respect for our rights, public safety, protecting our freedoms, and opportunity for all," she said in a bid to attract Kennedy supporters.

1. Avoid asking for the WiFi code right away

Even though most of us are often glued to our mobile phones, it can be seen as rude to dive straight in for the WiFi code when you are visiting a friend or family member. Even if you are visiting a close friend, it is polite to wait a little before bringing out your phone and trying to connect to the WiFi.

Different households have different views on shoes in the home so it is always best to make sure you're on the same page. As you arrive at the entrance , it is good etiquette to remove your shoes before walking through the home, or check with the homeowner to see if they would prefer that you did so before going any further.

After your hosts have gone to the effort of serving up a lovely meal, getting your phone out at mealtimes can be seen as a rude gesture. Taking a break from the screen, even if it is just while at the dinner table, is polite etiquette. It also allows you to enjoy uninterrupted time with your loved ones and friends as you tuck into a home cooked meal.

The bedroom is one of the most personal and private areas of our homes, which is why you should stay clear of it unless you are invited in. Some people do not like feet on the furniture, even if you are wearing socks or slippers, as this may be seen as a sign of disrespect for their home. If you are visiting a close friend or family member and feel comfortable in their home, it is still courtesy to ask for permission to do so before you make yourself too comfy.

10. Don't bring four legged friends along without asking first

Bringing your pet along to someone else's home without prior discussion can catch homeowners by surprise and it may not always be a welcome addition. Instead of assuming that it will be fine to do so, always check that the homeowners are happy for you to bring your pets along. Make sure to check in advance that there are no allergies, children or other pets to worry about as well.

11. Always flush the toilet

Although this may seem obvious, not everyone is in the habit of flushing the toilet after use. Regardless of whether you're on a mission to save water in your own home, make sure to flush when you're a guest in somebody else's. And on that note, always ensure the toilet lid is put down after use.

12. Use a coaster when putting drinks down

You never want to leave unsightly ring marks on a surface, especially if the furniture is not your own! To ensure that this doesn't happen, always ask for a coaster before you place your drink down. If the host doesn’t use coasters or has no more to use, at least you've asked and have been given their go ahead.

13. Take your outerwear off when you're indoors

Even if you're not planning to stay for long, it is good etiquette to remove your coat and any winter woollies such as hats, scarves and gloves when you enter a home. For a homeowner, having guests who are dressed for the outdoors can be an unsettling feeling, making them worry that their home may be cold indoors. It may also leave them unable to relax as you look ready to head right out.

14. Wash your hands before dinner

We're used to washing our hands now more than ever, but before you sit down at the table to enjoy a meal, make sure your hands are clean and fresh. This is especially true if you are breaking up bread, sharing serving utensils or pouring drinks.

15. Keep your opinions on how they've decorated to yourself

And finally, although this should be obvious, making negative comments about the appearance of your family or friend's home can be taken the wrong way. Even if you have good intentions, keep any criticisms to yourself unless you are asked for your opinion. After all, everyone has different tastes!

China, US agree to a leader call in top White House aide’s Beijing visit

BEIJING - The United States and China agreed Wednesday to more military talks and a call between the two countries’ leaders, after two days of talks between U.S. national security adviser Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi, aimed at preventing the difficult relationship from veering into conflict.

A call between President Biden and Chinese leader Xi Jinping will be planned in coming weeks, as part of an effort to keep lines of communication open, according to a readout from the White House.

Both sides agreed to hold video calls between military theater commanders at an “appropriate time,” Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said. Establishing that direct line of communication has been a priority for Washington as military tensions with China have spiked in the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea.

Sullivan raised concerns about China’s “unfair trade policies” and Beijing’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base.

“The United States will continue to take necessary actions to prevent advanced U.S. technologies from being used to undermine our national security, without unduly limiting trade or investment,” he said, according to a readout.

Wang called on the United States to respect Beijing’s sovereignty claims and its political system. “The United States should stop suppressing China in economics, trade and science and technology,” CCTV reported him saying.

Beijing, wary of U.S. election-year jockeying to be tough on China, has welcomed the visit - the first by a White House national security adviser in eight years - as a step to keep tensions in check during the final months of the Biden presidency.

Both sides called the talks “candid, substantive and constructive” and agreed that their “strategic channel” of communication was important.

“It demonstrates that China, as well as the United States, can keep relations stable and manage strategic competition during the election,” said Xin Qiang, an academic at Fudan University in Shanghai.

China has been careful to avoid openly favoring either U.S. presidential candidate, but Chinese foreign policy experts warn of renewed instability and a full-blown trade war if Donald Trump is elected.

Analysts said Sullivan’s visit improved odds that tentative cooperation with the United States under Biden would carry over into a new Democratic administration should Vice President Kamala Harris win the election on Nov. 5.

“The Chinese are in a holding pattern, knowing that there will be a new administration by next January,” said Yun Sun, director of the China Program at the Stimson Center, a think tank. “China has used the opportunity [of Sullivan’s visit] to reiterate its positions on bilateral relations, in the hope to set rules for the next administration.”

Sullivan’s two days of talks with Wang, held in a secluded lakeside resort on the northern outskirts of Beijing, mark their fifth meeting since May 2023.

Unlike previous rounds - which were held with little fanfare in Vienna, Malta, Bangkok and Washington - these talks began with both officials making statements underscoring the importance of a direct channel for dialogue.

Sullivan’s regular - and often lengthy - meetings with Wang have become a key plank in an intense diplomatic effort to find common ground in a relationship that, both sides acknowledge, has repeatedly come close to rock bottom in recent years.

It was these discussions that laid the groundwork for Biden to meet with Xi in November in San Francisco. There, the leaders agreed to restore high-level military-to-military communication and work together to curb the flow of illegal fentanyl precursors from China to the United States.

China prefers to deal directly with the White House over the State Department, a legacy that traces back to the clandestine trips of national security adviser Henry Kissinger, which paved the way for the restoration of diplomatic relations in the 1970s, said Wu Xinbo, director of the Center for American Studies at Fudan University.

Even so, Wu added, there is little hope of major breakthroughs before Biden leaves office. “It’s not really realistic for there to be a new strategic framework or consensus,” he said.

Ahead of the talks, the Chinese Foreign Ministry accused the United States of trying to “contain and suppress China” and noted in a statement that “the stabilization of China-U.S. relations remains at a critical juncture.”

Repeated attempts to stabilize ties have been undercut by equally frequent flare-ups, from China’s support of Russia’s defense industrial base to Beijing’s aggressive assertion of sovereignty claims over the island democracy of Taiwan and in the South China Sea.

Chinese and Philippine coast guard vessels clashed this month near a disputed islet off the coast of the Philippines. Philippine authorities said China’s aggressive tactics left a hole in the deck of a Philippine ship, while the United States also condemned the incident, in support of its security ally.

Beijing remains deeply suspicious of U.S. efforts to strengthen its alliances and partnerships across the Asia-Pacific region. It has accused the United States of attempting to build an “Asian NATO” in a region it sees as its sphere of influence.

Chinese officials also regularly lash out at U.S. export controls targeting advanced technologies with military applications such as artificial intelligence.

In another example of a standoff over American partnerships and trade policies, China responded angrily to Canada imposing a 100 percent tariff on Chinese-made electric cars on Tuesday - a position endorsed by Sullivan in a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau before the top White House aide flew to Beijing.

While China has chafed at Sullivan’s focus on alliances and responsible competition - Wang prefers to talk about “win-win” cooperation - his emphasis on avoiding confrontation has won grudging praise in Beijing, where Sullivan is seen as someone who can dial down disagreements.

For China, Sullivan has been an important interlocutor because he believes “it is not inevitable for confrontation to be at the core of U.S.-China relations,” said Zhu Feng, director of the Institute of International Studies at Nanjing University.

“China-U.S. relations cannot go back to the past. The most important thing now is to sustain and institutionalize high-level communication,” Zhu said.

A visit to a farmhouse is always relaxing and fun. I had an opportunity to visit the farmhouse of my grandparents last summer.

The farmhouse was located in the outskirts of the city, near the beach.

I had never been to a farmhouse before and hence I was very excited to go there. Me and my brother set out for the farmhouse on a hot weekend.

The Farmhouse:

The farmhouse was located in the most ideal spot one could imagine. It was surrounded by tall trees which provided adequate shade. And the sea was just a stone throws’ away. The farmhouse was the only structure in that area. It was a large faint yellow house with a slanting roof. There was a small lawn and a garage as well. We parked the car and went inside.

My grandfather had kept a boy to take care of the farmhouse who had done a splendid job. The house was good as new and was very well furnished. There was a rocking chair in the balcony and a wall painting of my grandparents hung in the living room. We unpacked and then rushed off to the beach.

A warm and muggy day was the perfect weather combination to go to the beach. The water of the sea was crystal clear and deep blue in colour. There was not a bit of sea weed in our sight. As one listens to the sound of the waves roaring and the breezy wind of the sea brushing by, you can spot boats sailing in the deep seas. I looked around and realized that there were hardly any people on the beach except us.

As the white sand burned under our feet, we took a deep breath of fresh air. We put the sunscreen on our bodies and ran towards the water. We dived through the thumping wave and the cold water rushed down the whole of our bodies. We then bounced back up to the surface. This cycle repeated itself several times. It was relieving to face the cool sea water after being in the warm weather for a long time. We swam for quite some time and then returned to the farmhouse.

The Lunch and Afternoon Siesta:

We were tired and hungry from the swimming. We sat down on the plastic chairs and the house boy got us some amazing seafood. We had prawn and lobster for lunch which was very delicious and fulfilling. We ate to our heart’s content, rested for some time and enjoyed the view of the place from the balcony of the farmhouse. It looked so beautiful and serene. We went down and collapsed on the two hammocks which were put up for us by the boy.

Conclusion:

The visit to the farmhouse was a welcome break out of all of our hectic schedules and me and my brother enjoyed it to the full extent. Though I was unhappy when we had to return home in the evening, we decided to return back to the farmhouse again very soon.

The United States has experienced deep political turmoil several times before over the past century. The Great Depression caused Americans to doubt the country’s economic system. World War II and the Cold War presented threats from global totalitarian movements. The 1960s and ’70s were marred by assassinations, riots, a losing war and a disgraced president.

These earlier periods were each more alarming in some ways than anything that has happened in the United States recently. Yet during each of those previous times of tumult, the basic dynamics of American democracy held firm. Candidates who won the most votes were able to take power and attempt to address the country’s problems.

The current period is different. As a result, the United States today finds itself in a situation with little historical precedent. American democracy is facing two distinct threats, which together represent the most serious challenge to the country’s governing ideals in decades.

The first threat is acute: a growing movement inside one of the country’s two major parties — the Republican Party — to refuse to accept defeat in an election.

The violent Jan. 6, 2021, attack on Congress , meant to prevent the certification of President Biden’s election, was the clearest manifestation of this movement, but it has continued since then. Hundreds of elected Republican officials around the country falsely claim that the 2020 election was rigged. Some of them are running for statewide offices that would oversee future elections, potentially putting them in position to overturn an election in 2024 or beyond.

“There is the possibility, for the first time in American history, that a legitimately elected president will not be able to take office,” said Yascha Mounk, a political scientist at Johns Hopkins University who studies democracy.
