The Cornell Leadership Program

Leadership development and honors-type experiences for students who have achieved high levels of success academically and as leaders

The Cornell Leadership Program, established in 2006, provides high-performing students with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and business acumen through a carefully designed set of experiences over four years. Students have the opportunity to participate in executive luncheons, delve into current business issues, participate in service opportunities and travel to various cities to learn first-hand about global business.

The Cornell Leadership Program provides participants with:

• Opportunities to travel domestically and internationally to engage with business thought leaders at companies such as the Denver Broncos, Golman Sachs and Meta, and to learn first-hand what it means to be successful and ethical business leaders
• Honors-type leadership seminars incorporating contemporary business cases, book discussions and simulations
• Dedicated advisor and career coach and supportive Trulaske faculty and staff committed to their success
• The opportunity to shape the future of the program through leadership roles

Cornell Leadership Program participants receive a $500 non-renewable scholarship and benefit from program-specific scholarships. Students have the opportunity to participate in corporate trips to locations such as Dallas, Denver and New York City.

Before applying to the Cornell Leadership Program, incoming first-year students must be accepted into Mizzou and select business as their major.  Students must have a minimum ACT of 28, OR a minimum SAT of 1320, OR at least a 3.80 high school GPA. Applications are open annually beginning in August and are due January 13th, 2025. Finalists will be notified by February 7th and invited to participate in Interview Day.

Meet the Director

Dr. Mary Beth Marrs oversees programs of distinction at the Trulaske College of Business, including the Cornell Leadership Program and the Heartland Scholars Academy. A three-time Mizzou alumna, she is the recipient of multiple teaching awards, including the university’s Faculty-Alumni Award and the William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence.

A personal statement is an important part of your application to graduate school, fellowships, or other applications. The personal statement is the best way for an admissions committee to get an idea of who you are, so it might be the most important part of your application. While the MU Career Center does not offer reviews of personal statements, here are a few tips to help get you started.

Key Considerations

Research. Spend time researching a graduate program website to learn about how the program describes itself, states goals for the program and how it is unique from other programs of study.  You can then incorporate that information into your personal statement.

Focus on the questions. Pay attention to the information the school is seeking. Just because you wrote an amazing personal statement once does not mean you can use it for every application. Most of the time, applications will ask you specific questions, so make sure you answer those prompts in your personal statement.

Be yourself. Concentrate on what makes you different from other applicants. Are you passionate about a certain cause? Do you have special skills or training? Have you gone above and beyond in some way? Write about it!

Stay focused . Most of the time there is a word limit, so you need to focus on just two or three topics, and explain them thoroughly. Any more than that and your message might get lost.

Tell a story . The admissions committee will look at a lot of personal statements and you don’t want them to get bored. Every story has a beginning, middle, and end–tell the story of why you got interested in this field, or the story of how you had a great experience that makes you perfect for their program.

Proofread.  This should go without saying, but check for grammar and spelling. And then check it again. And then have someone else check it. It’s important that this document not have any errors. It is the best representation of you, and you want it to be perfect!

Have several people read it . Start with the MU Writing Center as they can make sure you are on the right track. Other good options are having your advisor and/or a professor review it. They will know what personal statements look like in their field and can give you suggestions about what the admissions committee might be looking for.

Writing a college application essay can be a stressful task for a lot of students. The more practice they get in advance, the better! This roundup of college essay prompts gives applicants a chance to explore their thinking, polish their writing, and prepare to make the best possible impression on selection committees. Common App 2023-2024 College Essay Prompts

Hundreds of colleges and universities use the Common App process . For many schools, this includes responding to one of several college essay topics, which can change each year. Here are the essay prompts for the current application cycle (check with your chosen school/s to see if an essay is required).

• Some students have a background, identity, interest, or talent that is so meaningful they believe their application would be incomplete without it. If this sounds like you, then please share your story.
• The lessons we take from obstacles we encounter can be fundamental to later success. Recount a time when you faced a challenge, setback, or failure. How did it affect you, and what did you learn from the experience?

• Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea. What prompted your thinking? What was the outcome?
• Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?
• Discuss an accomplishment, event, or realization that sparked a period of personal growth and a new understanding of yourself or others.

• Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time. Why does it captivate you? What or who do you turn to when you want to learn more?
• Share an essay on any topic of your choice. It can be one you’ve already written, one that responds to a different prompt, or one of your own design.

More than 150 colleges and universities use the Coalition for College process . Here are their essay prompts for 2023-2024.

• Tell a story from your life, describing an experience that either demonstrates your character or helped to shape it.

• What interests or excites you? How does it shape who you are now or who you might become in the future?
• Describe a time when you had a positive impact on others. What were the challenges? What were the rewards?
• Has there been a time when an idea or belief of yours was questioned? How did you respond? What did you learn?
• What success have you achieved or obstacle have you faced? What advice would you give a sibling or friend going through a similar experience?

• Submit an essay on a topic of your choice.

Answer these questions by sharing specific examples from your own experience.

• Who is your favorite conversation partner? What do you discuss with that person?
• Discuss a time when reflection or introspection led to clarity or understanding of an issue that is important to you.
• Share an example of how you have used your own critical-thinking skills on a specific subject, project, idea, or interest.

• Describe a time when you were challenged by a perspective that differed from your own. How did you respond?
• What are the best words of advice you have received? Who shared them, and how have you applied them in your own life?
• Elaborate on an activity or experience you have had that made an impact on a community that is important to you.
• Using your personal, academic, or volunteer/work experiences, describe the topics or issues that you care about and why they are important to you.
• Who do you agree with on the big, important things, or who do you have your most interesting disagreements with? What are you agreeing or disagreeing about?
• Reflect on a personal experience where you intentionally expanded your cultural awareness.
• When was the last time you questioned something you had thought to be true?
• Discuss the significance to you of the school or summer activity in which you have been most involved.
• Reflect on a time when you or someone you observed had to make a choice about whether to act with integrity and honesty.
• Describe an example of your leadership experience in which you have positively influenced others, helped resolve disputes, or contributed to group efforts over time.

• Describe a time you did not meet expectations and what impact the experience had on you.

These essay topics give schools a better sense of who you are, what you value, and the kind of student citizen you might be.

• What drives you to create, and what do you hope to make or have you made?
• Which book, character, song, monologue, or piece of work (fiction or nonfiction) seems made for you? Why?
• What would you want your future college roommate to know about you?
• How has your own background influenced the types of problems you want to solve, the people you want to work with, and the impact you hope your work can have?

• Describe any meaningful travel experiences you’ve had.
• What would you want to be different in your own country or community to further principles of equality, equity, or social justice?
• What strength or quality do you have that most people might not see or recognize?
• If you could live your life fighting for one cause, what would it be and why?
• What gives meaning to your life?
• If you wrote a letter to yourself to be opened in 20 years, what would it say?
• If you had the power to change the course of history in your community or the world, what would you do and why?

• Choose one of the communities to which you belong, and describe that community and your place within it.
• What is the greatest compliment you have ever been given? Why was it meaningful to you?
• Explain how a text you’ve read—fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or literature of any kind—has helped you to understand the world’s complexity.

Topics like these show your academic interests and demonstrate your commitment to learning and discovery.

• What does it mean to you to be educated?
• What is your motivation for pursuing higher education?
• Describe your reasons for wanting to attend the specific school you’re applying to. Who or what factored into your decision?
• Academic inquiry starts with bold questions. What are some of the bold questions you have pondered that get you excited, and why do they interest you?

• What has been your best academic experience in the last two years, and what made it so good?
• If you decide to take a “gap year” between high school and college, what would you do during that time?
• Many schools place a high value on diverse student populations. How can you contribute to and support a diverse and inclusive student population at your chosen school?
• Imagine you were just awarded a research grant for a project of your choice. What are you researching and why?
• What do you love about the subject(s) you selected as potential major(s)? If undecided, share more about one of your academic passions.

• Describe a time when you’ve felt empowered or represented by an educator.
• Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

Use these college essay topics to show off your creativity and innovative thinking.

• You are tasked with creating a new category for the Nobel Prize. Explain what it would be, why you chose your specific category, and the criteria necessary to achieve this accomplishment.

• Pick one person—a historical figure, fictitious character, or modern individual—to converse with for an hour, and explain your choice.
• If you could witness a historic event (past, present, or future) firsthand, what would it be and why?
• If you could have a theme song, what would it be and why?
• Discuss a book that you would call a “great book.” What makes the book great in your view?
• If you could give any historical figure any piece of technology, who and what would it be, and why do you think they’d work so well together?

University of Missouri Medical School Secondary Application Tip #1: If you have any affiliation with the University of Missouri, the city of Columbia, or Missouri state, please mention the affiliations in the Mizzou secondary application.

University of Missouri Medical School Secondary Application Tip #2: For any University of Missouri Medical School secondary application prompt that asks you about unique traits or diversity, remember that diversity does not necessarily mean your ethnic diversity. Like should I just say that I lived in STL my whole childhood or go into what kind of impact it had? Should I just say I'm nontrad since I'm 2 years out of college or include why that's advantageous? I know there's an actual secondary so I'm just trying to figure out how deep to get for this

I was verified 7/24 and still haven't heard any communication regarding a secondary or that my application has been received. Is this an abnormal response time for mizzou or should I just wait a bit longer until I reach out to someone? This is the only school I still have not heard from.

If you haven’t realized it by now, Mizzou places a heavy emphasis on primary care throughout your medical education. You’re often exposed to Family Medicine and Pediatric physicians through IPC lectures, PBL sessions, simulations, etc.! We have dedicated clerkship pipelines for rural primary care, including Bryants Scholars and the LINC program. Furthermore, during your Family Med clerkship, you’re required to do half of your rotation at an offsite location; giving you plenty of opportunities to get involved in rural medicine. There’s a Rural Medicine Interest Group that is heavily involved with the student population. We even have a dedicated series of Rural Medicine lectures that are given every so often. I felt incredibly supported throughout my journey as I tossed around the possibility of integrating here for residency. The faculty and physicians you work with are INTERESTED in teaching, they value your presence, and they seek to give you plentiful opportunities to be thoroughly engaged in patient care. I also feel like the residents/staff here are “real” with you. If there’s something that’s not going well, they’ll happily let you know (which I appreciated). I also found it easy to find mentors that had a more rural practice and often leaned on them to give me a better idea of what rural medicine is like. When you’re deciding on whether or not to stick to Columbia’s campus for your M3 year, I will caution you that I found minimal success in getting those “rural experiences” outside of my Family Medicine clerkship. I’ve heard those in Springfield had more opportunities to get involved in a rural clinic. But, that’s the only real downside imho. Click to expand...

Nobody OOS has heard back after submitting the OOS form, right? It's been only 3 weeks since I submitted mine, and they specified it can take up to 4 weeks, so I'm not getting worried but I am curious if anyone knows about turnaround time.

What's the preferred acronym for Mizzou that I should use in my secondaries? Mizzou is what I find myself wanting to use, MU Med and Mizzou Med are what they use in their own emails. I feel strange using MU because it's the University of Missouri and not Missouri University.

Honors one read.

Each year the Honors College selects an important book – fiction or non-fiction – as its One Read. The major theme or themes of the book then becomes the focal point of honors community activities, programming, and even courses and academic units of study, all intended to extend the discussions and the impacts of the ideas and lessons for our lives.

The impact of these works on our students and their academic performance cannot be understated; students have gone on to win awards with their essays based on these works and they have even changed their plans for academic study after coming into deep contact with the issues raised.

2024 Honors One Read: Javier Zamora, Solito

Javier Zamora’s  Solito is a three-thousand-mile journey from his small town in El Salvador, through Guatemala and Mexico, and across the U.S. border. He will leave behind his beloved aunt and grandparents to reunite with a mother who left four years ago and a father he barely remembers. Traveling alone amid a group of strangers and a “coyote” hired to lead them to safety, Javier expects his trip to last two short weeks.   At nine years old, all Javier can imagine is rushing into his parents’ arms, snuggling in bed between them, and living under the same roof again. He cannot foresee the perilous boat trips, relentless desert treks, pointed guns, arrests and deceptions that await him; nor can he know that those two weeks will expand into two life-altering months alongside fellow migrants who will come to encircle him like an unexpected family.   A memoir as gripping as it is moving,  Solito  provides an immediate and intimate account not only of a treacherous and near-impossible journey, but also of the miraculous kindness and love delivered at the most unexpected moments.  Solito  is Javier Zamora’s story, but it’s also the story of millions of others who had no choice but to leave home.

About the Author

Javier Zamora was born in El Salvador in 1990. His father fled the country when he was one, and his mother when he was about to turn five. Both parents’ migrations were caused by the U.S.-funded Salvadoran Civil War. When he was nine Javier migrated through Guatemala, Mexico, and the Sonoran Desert. His debut poetry collection, Unaccompanied, explores the impact of the war and immigration on his family. Zamora has been a Stegner Fellow at Stanford and a Radcliffe Fellow at Harvard and holds fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.

One Read Honors Symposium (Required Event)

All incoming, first-year Honors College students are expected to read the selected book over the summer and attend the One Read Symposium during Welcome Week.

This seminar is designed to allow first-year students the opportunity to read, think about, and discuss in greater depth the Honors College’s One Read selection for 2024: Javier Zamora’s Solito . This course is open to all incoming freshmen but is required for those students receiving a scholarship through the Honors College.

Each week through June & July, we will be posting new discussion questions in the Discord. We will also have channels dedicated to any announcements and events surrounding the One Read.
