- Welcome to Turnitin Guides
Welcome to Turnitin’s new website for guidance!
In 2024, we migrated our comprehensive library of guidance from https://help.turnitin.com to this site, guides.turnitin.com. During this process we have taken the opportunity to take a holistic look at our content and how we structure our guides.
This page is here to help you orientate yourself with these changes and update your resources
What's new?
We have restructured the content to help you navigate it more efficiently.
We are consolidating numerous pages to make our individual guides more valuable as well as removing duplicated content.
For example, our Similarity Report guidance on help.turnitin is repeated in numerous places to cater for each individual integration and license type. On guides.turnitin this content will exist in a single place to allow for users of all integrations and licenses to find it easily. We have made slight modifications to these guides to help you understand which guides are pertinent to you and your institution.
Our guidance search has greatly improved
As a result of our content restructure, the search functionality for guides.turnitin has improved. Use the search bar at the top of any page to locate the guidance you’re searching for.
Dedicated student and administrator guidance hubs
Visit the Student hub area to locate student guidance. For students who access Turnitin via an LMS or VLE, check out the subsection Submitting to Turnitin .
Visiting the Administrator hub area to locate administrator guidance and release notes.
iThenticate and Crossref Similarity Check guidance is now located on a separate site
To improve the experience for our iThenticate and Crossref Similiarity Check customers we have move their help content onto a separate help site, guides.ithenticate.com . This will improve the search for all users.
We have also created an orientation page for this site to help users become acclimatised.
Some guidance is no longer grouped within the LMS umbrella
Some guidance which was previously provided under each LMS has been moved to sections that reflect those workflows’ outcomes. Use the table below as a cheatsheet to quickly locate guidance.

Store student submissions in
- Submissions are stored in the global Turnitin repository.
- Submissions are stored in a repository which is only accessible by your institution.
- A Similarity Report will be generated for submissions, but submissions will not be stored in the standard repository or the institution’s repository for future comparison.
If you find that this setting is unavailable to you, please contact your administrator to request it to be enabled in their account settings. If your administrator subsequently finds that the setting is also unavailable to them, it is recommended that they speak to their Turnitin account manager.
Compare submissions against
These options allow you to select the repositories that students' submissions will be checked against when processing Similarity Reports. The Similarity Score may decrease if a repository option is deselected.
- This option compares current submissions to previous submissions in classes and assignments in Turnitin across institutions.
- This option compares current submissions to the repository of student papers unique to your institution.
- This option compares current submissions to a repository of archived and live publicly available internet pages containing billions of pages of existing content and tens of thousands of new pages added daily.
- This option compares current submissions to third party periodical, journal, and publication content including many major professional journals, periodicals, and business publications.
Similarity Report
Exclude bibliographic materials
This setting excludes text that appears in the bibliography, works cited, or references sections of student papers from being checked for matches when generating Similarity Reports. You can overwrite this setting in individual Similarity Reports.
Exclude quoted materials
This setting excludes quotations from being checked for matches when generating Similarity Reports. You can overwrite this setting in individual Similarity Reports.
Exclude small sources
This setting excludes matches that are not of sufficient length (determined by you) from being considered when generating Similarity Reports. Once this setting has been checked, a box will appear where you can exclude matches by number of words. You can overwrite this setting in individual Similarity Reports.
Allow students to view report after submitting
This setting allows students to view their Similarity Reports for submissions to this assignment. Select the checkbox to allow your students to view their Similarity Reports for submissions to this assignment. On future launches into the settings panel, this setting will be controlled by Blackboard Learn and can be changed under the toggle option to enable the integration.
Normally report scores will generate within a few minutes, however if this is not the case, please wait up to 24 hours before contacting support as further attempts to generate the report will continue for this timeframe.

Online assignments allow you to provide detailed feedback to your students using annotations, rubrics, voice recordings and text. Turnitin Feedback Studio, now integrated into Blackboard, offers a streamlined process for online assignments. The Blackboard assignments tool is also available in Blackboard and offers greater support for group submissions and delegated marking than Turnitin assignments but have more limited annotation tools.
Update for the 202 4 /2 5 Academic Year: Any assignments that have the old blue and red logo Turnitin logo, or a "Turnitin Direct" broken image displayed (see below), must be re-created using the new Turnitin assignment tool in your new modules to ensure they work. The assignments with the old logo ”Turnitin Direct” link will no longer be accessible through Blackboard after August 2023. We also highly recommend checking our Online Tutorials & Guides below, which cover how to set up your assignments step-by-step. For example, it is important to note that Turnitin assignments now add results to the Grade Centre automatically (similar to Blackboard assignments) . You will need to hide the corresponding Grade Centre columns regardless of the Feedback Release Date in Turnitin itself .
→ Click on the titles below to view information and guides on using Turnitin assignments.
Online assignments allow students to submit essays in the College Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) Blackboard Learn and provide you with the functionality to give detailed feedback to your students using annotations, rubrics, voice recordings and text. Turnitin Feedback Studio offers a streamlined process for online assignments. Click on the video below for a brief overview of how you can use online assignments to provide detailed feedback to enhance student learning. A separate page is available for assignments created with Blackboard's own assignment tool .
We strongly recommend all Turnitin assignments are created through Blackboard exclusively and that staff & students no longer access/modify/create assignments through Turnitin.com to avoid potential issues. If you are planning to use Turnitin for summative online exams, we have an overview page on online exams giving general advice on using Blackboard Assignments, Tests and Turnitin for exams.
Notice regarding the Turnitin Similarity Score : The similarity score in the Turnitin report is not a measure of plagiarism within a piece of work but represents where there are similarities to other sources (journals, essays, books etc.). A submission with a high similarity score might be satisfactory once the bibliography, cover sheet etc. are accounted for whereas a submission could have a low score but could be heavily paraphrasing other sources without citation.
Lecturers should advise their students not to focus on getting the similarity score below a certain percentage as there are many other dimensions to correctly citing sources. More information on interpreting the Similarity Score is available on the Turnitin website ; instructors may also find this blog post by Turnitin on the similarity report informative .
If a paper submitted to your class assignment shows a high similarity match to another paper or if you are contacted by another academic either within college or from another college, please see the Turnitin website for advice.
Please note most importantly: if you are going to run your students papers through Turnitin, the student must be informed in advance about the product and its intended use by you, the lecturer.
You can use online assignments to:
• Create, manage, and circulate assignments within Blackboard for formative and summative learning |
• Check for potential originality issues using a Similarity Report |
• Grade using rubrics |
• Manage how and when grades and feedback are released to students |
• Provide audio feedback to students |

Blackboard Vs Turnitin Assignments
This interactive guide gives an overview of the pros and cons of using Blackboard or Turnitin assignments.
Procedure : if a student has issues submitting we would advise them to contact the module instructor so there is a record of this and because the instructor would need to make a determination as to whether to reset the attempt based on the different circumstances. Clearing/resetting attempts needs to be done by the instructor of a particular module in the first instance. We also strongly recommend that if there are submission issues due to account/access problems etc. with an individual student, please accept the submission via email as proof of submission until the issue is resolved. If an instructor cannot resolve the issue themselves, the instructor can contact us for advice via [email protected]
Clearing an attempt/Remove From Inbox: Typically submission problems are due to browser issues or if a student is trying to resubmit after the Due Date. If it looks to be a browser issue, please advise the student to try on another device/browser such as Chrome or Firefox. If the Due Date passes, students will be unable to resubmit so the only way to upload a new attempt is to either modify the Due Date or clear the existing attempt. If you go to the Submission Inbox for the Turnitin assignment you can locate the student's name in the list. Under the "Options" column there are three dots; click on this and select "Remove From Inbox".
Important: First click on the ‘Download’ icon to make a backup of the existing file and also make a note of the submission ID before deleting just in case of any issues. Then you can click on the Remove from Inbox option to remove the submission for the individual student.
Turnitn Paper Deletion Requests : For submissions that have been added to the 'Standard Paper Repository', you can also "Request permanent deletion" under the 'Options' column for the relevant student. Please note, Turnitin have advised that as of January 23rd 2024, approved paper deletion requests will be immediately and permanently deleted. Once approved for deletion, papers will no longer be recoverable.
To upload on behalf of a student : at the top of the inbox above the list if student names, is a search field that says 'Submit on behalf of a student.' Enter the student's name and follow the instructions to upload the file (as long as you have also allowed Late Submissions under the settings for the assignment if the Due Date has already passed). The assignment might be marked in red as late but there is no automatic deducting of marks etc. so it should not affect the submission otherwise.
The Turnitin Paper Lookup tool will allow instructors to retrieve submissions from past assignments, including ‘old’ Turnitin assignments created using the Basic and Direct Building Block. It allows instructors who have previously interacted with the submission point to:
- Retrieve reports generated for those submissions, including the Similarity Report, Grading Report and a combination Similarity Report & Grading Report all within their Blackboard Learn environment.
- Access past submissions and associated reports from students who may have left the module.
The tool is available within the ' Module Management ' area of a current or past module and can be accessed by selecting ' Module Tools ' and choosing the ' Turnitin Paper Lookup Tool ' close to the bottom of the expanded list.
Using the Paper Look Up Tool – Retrieving submissions
To access the tool:
- Navigate to and select the ‘ Turnitin Paper Lookup Tool ’ from within your module on Blackboard. Please note, it may take a few seconds for the tool to open.
- When the tool opens, you can search for the module name in the search bar.
- Select the module name to find all the Turnitin assignments in that module.
- Click on an assignment to view the submitted file.
- From here you can download the Similarity Report, the Original File, th Grading Report and a combination of the Grading & Similarity Report.
To recover a Turnitin submission from a module where you have not previously interacted with the assignment, locate the Turnitin assignment and wait for the Assignment Inbox to load. You should then be able to find any files submitted to that submission point.
Turnitin Assignments that were set up using the ‘ old ’ Turnitin Building Block (ie assignments with a View/Complete link ), you will need to identify the assignment owner or instructor who marked or moderated the submissions and ask them to retrieve the files for you. If the original assignment owner/instructor is no longer active in your school, please email the [email protected] with the instructor’s details, the name of the module, the name of the assignment you are trying to access and the name of the student whose submission you are trying to retrieve.
Please visit The paper lookup tool for Feedback Studio guide on the Turnitin website for more information.

In this case, brand new LTI assignments would need to be created for any previous Building Block assignments
The LTI integration can be found as an option within the Build Content drop-down menu. This is where all LTI tools integrated with Blackboard Learn are located
Email submission receipts are not currently supported with Turnitin Feedback Studio LTI integrations, however following a submission students are presented with a banner within their assignment dashboard that provides a link to download a submission receipt. They can also access their assignment dashboard at any time to download a copy of the submission receipt using the receipt icon.
Visit the module Full Grade Center on Blackboard and check that the corresponding column for the assignment and the Total column have been hidden from student view
The LTI integration offers automatic grade synchronization between the Turnitin LTI assignment inbox and the Blackboard Learn grade center by using the LTI Assignment and Grade Services.

Blackboard (Faculty) - Turnitin Assignments: Create a Turnitin Assignment
- www.siue.edu
- ITS Home Page
IMPORTANT! If any of your Turnitin Assignments have the old Turnitin logo (see below), please re-create your assignments using the instructions below. Turnitin is removing the old building block during the summer of 2023. After that time, the assignments will no longer work, nor will you have access to those papers. To download and archive those papers, follow these instructions: https://kb.siue.edu/63292
Create a Turnitin Assignment
- Navigate to the content area in your Blackboard course where you want the assignment to be located (ex: Coursework > Module 1).
Submitting papers to the Standard paper repository will allow future papers to match to this paper. If you wish to use this submission for a draft assignment, you do not want the paper to submit to the standard paper repository because the final submission will match 100% to this draft. Click on the dropdown box and select "Do not store the submitted paper." Allow submission file of any type - See the Turnitin site for description of the file types accepted. Allow late submission - if late submissions are allowed, the word "Late" will appear in the Assignment In box. If late submission is not allowed, students will not be able to submit an assignment after the due date. Enable anonymous marking - allows the faculty to grade without seeing the students name. This may help avoiding bias in the grading. Enable grammar checking using ETS e-rater technology - the ETS e-rater will flag common grammar mistakes in papers. Attach a rubric - you may create a rubric for this assignment. See Create a Rubric for more details.
Generate Similarity Reports - Consider "Generating reports immediately" option. They can use the Similarity Report to review their paper for correct citation and summarization. Allow student to view Similarity Reports will assist the students in learning how to correctly cite and summarize passages. This setting plus the setting above will allow the students to correct mistakes. Exclude bibliographic materials will reduce the similarity score as it will exclude bibliographic text that is commonly cited. Exclude quoted materials will also reduce the similarity score although unchecking this will allow the student to confirm that they have quoted and cited the quote properly. Exclude small sources will allow you to select word or percentage count so that common phrases will not appear. This will also help reduce the Similarity score.
- Click the Submit button to finalize the Turnitin assignment.

Similarity Report
Generate Similarity Reports for student submission (drop down menu)
- Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed) Originality Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately. Students cannot resubmit papers. If, for any reason, a resubmission is required when this setting is selected, you must manually delete a student’s submission from the assignment inbox to allow the student to submit again.
- Students may resubmit as often as they wish until the assignment’s due date.
- Similarity Reports for a second or subsequent submission will generate after 24 hours of submission.
- As all previous submissions are removed upon resubmission, only the latest submission is available to both you and the student.
- Similarity Reports will regenerate within an hour of the due date and time to allow student submissions to compare against one another within the assignment.
- This report regeneration may cause a change in a paper’s similarity score. No resubmissions are allowed after the due date and time of the assignment.
- Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date) Originality Reports will not be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment is reached. Students may resubmit as many times as needed until the due date and time, but will not receive reports during this period. No resubmissions are allowed after the due date and time of the assignment.
- Enable Translated Matching For non-English language submissions. If enabled, Turnitin will identify the language the paper is written, fully translate the paper to English and text match the resulting English language paper against the databases enabled for the assignment.
- Allow students to view Similarity Reports Select the checkbox to allow your students to view their Similarity Reports for submissions to this assignment. This option gives you more flexibility and control when creating assignments.
- Exclude bibliographic materials Select the checkbox to exclude text appearing in the bibliography, works cited, or references sections of student papers from being checked for matches when generating Originality Reports. You can overwrite this setting in individual Similarity Reports.
- Exclude quoted materials Select the checkbox to exclude quotations from being checked for matches when generating Similarity Reports. You can overwrite this setting in individual Similarity Reports.
- Exclude small sources Select the checkbox to exclude matches that are not of sufficient length (determined by you) from being considered when generating Similarity Reports. A box will appear, where you can exclude matches by word count or by percentage.
Compare against
These search options allow you to select the repositories that students’ submissions will be checked against when processing Similarity Reports for papers. The similarity score may decrease if a repository option is deselected .
Exclude assignment template
If you have provided a template document for your students to follow, these can be excluded from the Similarity Report by uploading the template or copying the text into the Create Custom Template field.
For details see the Turnitin help guide for Exclude Assignment Template .
Additional Settings
Select Save these settings for future use if you wish to reuse the same settings for your future Turnitin Assignments.

Turnitin: A student guide to submitting an assignment
Reviewed: 11/07/2022
What is Turnitin?
Turnitin is software that is used by the University to help to identify plagiarised work. It allows you to submit your work via your Blackboard course, where an originality report may be generated. This report will highlight text in your submission that matches text from one or more of the following sources:
- other students’ work at the University of Manchester
- students’ work at other institutions
- academic publications
- Internet sources.
These reports are examined as a standard part of the assessment process. When your work is submitted to Turnitin, it will normally be added to an international database of student papers. Your name will not be attached to your paper. Other students’ work will then be compared to your work from that point onwards. If your submission is confidential, your tutor can make sure that it is not added to the database.
File types and sizes
Please note: the file size must be less than 100MB, it must have a minimum of 20 words, be less than 400 pages, and the standard file types allowed are:
- Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx)
- OpenOffice Text (.odt)
- WordPerfect (.wpd)
- PostScript (.ps/.eps)
- Hangul Word Processor (.hwp)
- Rich Text (.rtf)
- Plain text (.txt)
- Google Docs via Google Drive
- Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx/.ppt/.ppsx/.pps)
- Microsoft Excel (.xls/.xlsx).

How to submit an assignment
Stage 1: access the assignment submission link.
- Log into your Blackboard course. The assignment submission link will usually be located in the ‘ Assessments ’ area on the left-hand menu.
- Click the link to upload your assignment . You must read and follow any instructions given by your course leader.
- To submit your assignment, click the ‘ Upload Submission ’ button.
- Clicking the question mark icon will display any extra information provided by your tutor, including feedback release date and assessment criteria (if an assignment rubric has been attached).
Stage 2: Upload your document
- Next, you need to enter a ‘Submission Title’. You must check any instructions given by your tutor. In many schools in the University, it is essential that you enter your 7-digit ID number in the submission title box and that you remove any references to your name in the submission document itself. This is to comply with anonymous marking regulations. Do not use quotation marks in the submission title as this can cause errors. It is also important that you remove any reference to your name from the submission document itself.
- Select ‘Choose file’ and locate the file you wish to upload.
- (Optional) This allows you to upload a cloud submission, e.g. Google Drive, OneDrive or Dropbox document.
Stage 3: Review your document
This stage allows you to check you have uploaded the correct document. You can ‘ Preview ’, ‘ Cancel Submission ’ or continue to ‘ Submit to Turnitin ‘ .
Stage 4: Complete the submission
Upon submission, you will see this screen:
a) You will see a confirmation that your submission was successful. (If this is not the case, please try and submit again).
b) You may have the option to resubmit your paper if this has been allowed by your tutor. Please note: It can take up to 24 hours for re-uploaded files to be processed; however, the submission time will be marked as the time that the re-upload occurred. If you need to re-upload your work and the resubmit button is not available, then please contact your tutor to discuss arrangements for this, as they will vary from course to course.
c) You have the option to download a copy of the paper you have submitted.
d) You have the option to download a digital receipt for the paper you have submitted. It is very important that you retain your digital receipt as a record of your submission.
Important note for users of Mac systems (MacBook, iMac etc.)
If your assignment document is created on a Mac computer and you intend to include images copied and pasted from a PDF source document, it is essential that you use one of the following methods to bring the images into your assignment document. For any Mac software, including the ‘Preview’ application, do the following:
- Use ‘ Shift + Command + 5 ‘ to open the Screenshot tool. (Alternatively, search for the Screenshot tool from your Launchpad or go to ‘ File > Take Screenshot > From Selection… ‘)
- Select the area of the page you wish to save as an image (the image will automatically be saved to the desktop).
- In Word, use ‘ Insert > Image ’ to import the image.
- Do not use the Select tool in Preview to copy and paste images from the PDF into your assignment document.

Similarity Report
- Common option for summative assessment: Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date) : Originality Reports will not be generated for any submission until the due date and time of the assignment is reached. Students may resubmit as many times as needed until the due date and time, but will not receive reports during this period. No resubmissions are allowed after the due date and time of the assignment
- Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed) : Originality Reports for all submissions will be generated immediately. Students cannot resubmit papers. If, for any reason, a resubmission is required when this setting is selected, you must manually delete a student’s submission from the assignment inbox to allow the student to submit again.
- Students may resubmit as often as they wish until the assignment’s due date.
Allow students to view similarity reports: Select the checkbox if you want students to view their similarity report. The settings above will determine when the students see their report.
