Coursera is probably best known for its free course options, from a Yale psychology class on how to be happy to an immensely popular Stanford machine learning course . It also offers short-term certificate programs from companies like Google and IBM .

But it also has master's degree programs — remote, accessible, and comparatively more affordable routes to what are often the same classes, faculty, and degrees offered to on-campus students.  

Below, you'll find 10 popular Coursera master's programs, which range from electrical engineering to public health. Keep in mind that application deadlines span from May 30 to August 31, 2021.

One of the top schools in the world, University of Pennsylvania offers a completely online Master of Computer and Information Technology degree. Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from University of Colorado Boulder

The Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado Boulder is completely online and flexible. Students can take an individual course in the program to build a professional skill or a fraction of the courses to earn a graduate certificate.

To earn the full master's degree, students get to complete their choice of 30-credit hours. They can choose from over 30 elective courses in key areas: power electronics, embedded systems, photonics and optics, controls and communications, electromagnetics, and computer engineering. 

Admission to the program is based on performance, so no formal application is required to begin. You just need to successfully complete one "Pathway Specialization" in order to be officially admitted into the program. Then, you combine those credits with more courses to reach your 30 credits.

Get qualified for recommended admission

You can earn a guaranteed admission recommendation from the department, if you meet the conditions below.

Admittance conditions for a guaranteed recommendation:

• Complete two classes from the master's degree curriculum with a GPA of 3.0 or higher and with no less than a 2.7 in any course. You can take up to 9 credits as a non-admitted student.
• A Bachelor of Science from a regionally accredited institution in electrical engineering, computer science, or related field (minimum 3.0 GPA) is required.
• International students must hold degrees equivalent to U.S. bachelor's degrees, and should be among the top students in their classes. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (B.S.E.E.T.) degrees are not accepted. International students must have passing scores in any one of the English proficiency exams (TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE).

If you do not meet all the requirements, online students may still be eligible to take coursework before being admitted to the graduate program. Contact an ECE advisor to discuss individual exceptions to these guidelines. The Department can review and admit students with unofficial transcripts. Students will however be required to submit their official transcripts during the first semester of attendance, if they had not included them in their application.

Requirements

Students complete 30 semester credits, 21 of which must be completed after formal admission to Colorado State University. This degree is coursework only; neither a thesis nor oral exam is required.

• Minimum of 21 credits earned at Colorado State (must be at 500-level or higher).
• Up to 15 credits of coursework may be taken outside of the electrical or computer engineering discipline, subject to approval by the M.E. advisor and the Graduate Admissions Committee .
• For M.E Students, no independent study, research, internship, supervised college teaching, or practicum credits may be credited toward the degree.
• A maximum of 6 credits of 400-level undergraduate courses can be used toward the degree. Up to 8 credits at the 400-level are permitted when at least one course is a 4 credit course. Remaining credits must be in 500-level or higher courses. 400-level courses are only accepted toward the degree when taken after formal admission.
• Students may request up to six credits of 500-level coursework to be transferred from other regionally-accredited institutions; a committee will review the request and make a determination. Grades must be ‘B’ or higher in transferable coursework and not be part of an earned degree.

1 Review Admission Requirements

This Master of Engineering (M.E.) and Master of Science (M.S.) requires applicants to have the following, at a minimum:

• Bachelor of Science from a regionally accredited institution in engineering, computer science, physics, or related field that includes coursework in calculus
• 3.0 GPA in undergraduate degree
• International students must hold degrees equivalent to U.S. bachelor's degrees, and should be among the top students in their classes. Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology (B.S.E.E.T.) degrees are not accepted

Note that meeting the minimum department standards does not ensure admission to the program. Admission to Colorado State University graduate programs is based on a number of factors, including prior academic and professional experience and your statement of purpose.

The standard application process into the program requires a pre-application reviewed by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Students who meet the conditions below and submit a pre-application, will be automatically recommended by the department to the Graduate School at CSU.

2 Prepare Application Materials

The USU Computer Science Department is excited to announce our new Master of Computer Science (MCS) program! This is a professional, coursework-only degree. Admissions are open now - please forward/share with your family, friends, classmates, and colleagues who may be interested in a career pivot to Computer Science (no previous CS experience required) or pursuing additional education. No GRE is required for admission!

The Master of Computer Science is a professional, coursework-only master's degree which:

• No previous CS or coding experience required
• Students without a grade of C or better in a course in Data Structures and Algorithms (CS 2420 at USU) must complete three (3) prerequisite courses (two or three semesters) before beginning their MCS coursework
• Admissions requirements: previous transcripts, three letters of recommendation, resume, and statement of purpose
• Allows students to take courses according to their interests
• Only 33 credits (or 11 courses) are required

Requirement Summary

The admissions committee will consider the following in their decisions: Current degree (BS, MS) and the reputation of the programs where the degree was obtained, GPA, TOEFL/IELTS scores, performance in prerequisite courses, resume, statement of purpose, and recommendations.

• 3.0 GPA for the last 60 semester credits

Application Materials

Official transcripts.

Each previously attended college and/or university, including Utah State University, must be listed on the application form, and the applicant must have an official transcript from each institution (except Utah State University) sent directly to the Utah State University School of Graduate Studies. Transcripts must be submitted for all coursework above the high-school level and all prior degrees. Transcripts not in English must be accompanied by a notarized translation. Transcripts submitted as application credentials become the property of the School of Graduate Studies and will not be copied for or returned to the applicant.

Three Letters of Recommendation

Three letters of recommendation are required; each must address the applicant's potential for success in the Master of Computer Science program. At least two of the letters must come from persons from whom the applicant has taken academic coursework. The letters must be sent directly to the School of Graduate Studies. The request is sent out electronically through the online application.

TOEFL or IELTS Scores

• TOEFL internet-based test: 79
• IELTS exam: overall score of 6.0 and a minimum score of 5 on each subscale.
• Scores that are more than 2 years old are not accepted.
• If an international applicant has a degree from a university in an English-speaking country, the TOEFL or IELTS is not required.
• Take and pass the IELI placement exam, or
• Take the IELI placement exam and complete the required classes.
• Note: IELI does not offer level 0 or low-beginning English classes. IELI offers level 1, which is high-beginning. Students entering IELI must have a basic knowledge of English in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Passing the IELI placement exam or completing the required IELI classes does not guarantee matriculation into a graduate program.

Master of Computer Science (MCS) students do not need to find a major professor or form a Supervisory Committee. Rachel Mano, Graduate Program Coordinator , will serve as the permanent advisor for all MCS students.

• Program of Study

The Program of Study (POS) is a contract among the student, Rachel Mano, Graduate Program Coordinator , and the School of Graduate Studies outlining which courses the student will take to meet the School of Graduate Studies requirements and complete their degree program.

Students joining the department in a Fall semester will need to submit a Program of Study by April 1st of their second semester. Students joining the department in a Spring semester will need to submit a Program of Study by November 1st of their second semester.

In order to be approved, the POS must follow the Master of Computer Science (MCS) degree requirements listed in the USU Catalog . Requirements for an MCS POS are as follows:

At least 33 credits

18 credits of CS 6000+ courses. Excluding CS 6250

15 additional credits of graduate coursework at the 5000-level or above.

Up to 3 credits of CS 6250

Up to one course from CS 5950, CS 6950, and CS 7950

Cannot include CS 6900, CS 6970, CS 6990, CS 7970, or CS 7990

If CS 5250 and CS 5260 are included, they must be taken the same semester.

May include up to 6 credits outside the CS department. Outside credits must be from: ECE, MATH, STAT, PSC 6150 or SOC 6150

Cannot include independent study, research, or continuing graduate advisement outside of the CS department.

• Graduate students are required to maintain at least a 3.0 GPA for degree-program courses. 
• Grades of C+ or lower will not be accepted for a graduate degree.

Departmental Funding (in the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships) is not available for MCS students. Some students are able to find campus employment with other departments or research groups:

How does tuition work at WGU?

WGU's tuition is a flat rate that is charged every six months. You can take as many courses as you are able in that six-month term—with no extra cost. You simply pay for the term and do as much work as you can or want to during that time. This means that finishing faster helps you save money—a major benefit you won't find at most other schools. 

How do I communicate with my mentor?

You will be expected to maintain regular communication with your Program Mentor while enrolled at WGU. 

During a student's first term, the Program Mentor and student meet once each week by phone for a substantive discussion about engaging learning resources and assessments until the student achieves on-time progress (OTP).

After the first term, for students who meet and maintain on-time progress (OTP), the Program Mentor and student meet at least once every two weeks by phone for a substantive discussion about engaging learning resources and assessments.

For students on financial aid warning, probation, or termination, the Program Mentor and student meet at least once each week by phone for a substantive discussion about engaging learning resources and assessments until the student achieves OTP.

Is this program truly "at your own pace"?

WGU offers flexible pacing, meaning you can move through courses at a  pace that meets your learning style and knowledge level . Students can go as fast as they can but not as slowly. Students are required to complete a minimum number of competency units per term to meet on-time progress. However, if you choose to study at 3 am daily, that we can accommodate. 

How quickly can you finish the program?

Your personal progress will be determined by the extent of your transfer units, your time commitment, and your determination to proceed at a faster rate. Traditionally, without an associate’s degree or equivalent, it will take 2 to 2.5 years. Master's degree programs are designed to be completed within 2 years. However, we work on a  competency-based model,  which gives you credit for passing assessments and proving you can perform a task or understand a course of study proficiently. 

Can you skip ahead if you get done early?

Yes! If you are able to complete the minimum requirement before your term is over, you can add more courses, with no  tuition increase.

Is WGU accredited?

Yes! WGU is  institutionally accredited  by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), the highest form of accreditation.

This is much lower than most online and traditional degree programs.

Do all my existing credits transfer to WGU?

WGU has a  generous transfer policy . Our transcripts department can accept official copies of transcripts from your previous educational institutions for a course-by-course evaluation that compares the context of your courses to those in our programs, to tell you what is comparable and transferable.

What will be needed for admissions?

It depends on the program you are interested in pursuing. Some programs will have additional requirements however, the  general admissions process  is as follows: 

• Complete the enrollment application
• Contact Enrollment at 866-225-5948 to go over the program and admissions process specific to your desired degree program
• Submit official transcripts
• If desired, complete FAFSA form for financial aid

How soon can I start?

The enrollment process can take approximately 4-6 weeks. Start dates are the first of each month once enrollment has been completed.

Will another school or employer accept my WGU degree?

Every school sets its own guidelines however, accreditation plays a big part in recognition and acceptance. WGU is institutionally  accredited  by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU), the highest form of accreditation. The Human Computer Interaction Graduate Program’s online HCI master’s degree program, MHC or MHCI, was created from the growing demand from business and industry for a graduate degree program that provides education in the field of Human Computer Interaction.

This coursework-only masters degree is intended primarily for online students looking for a terminal professional degree to advance their careers. It requires the completion of 10 three-credit courses, some of which will satisfy the core requirements of our program.

Application process.

The online Master of HCI program is most appropriate for individuals with a bachelor’s degree in a scientific, engineering, business, or design discipline, who are pursuing a professional career, and who already have a strong base of information technology skills.

• The program requires that admitted students have undergraduate degrees from an accredited university with a GPA of 3.0 or equivalent. International degrees must be comparable to a US bachelor’s degree or higher from a college or university regionally accredited/recognized by the Ministry of Education in that country.
• 3-year degrees from India, Bangladesh, Canada (excluding Quebec), Nepal, and Pakistan are not accepted. 3-year degrees from other countries are reviewed on an individual basis.
• GRE is optional for all students.
• The English exam requirement may be waived if a degree is earned from a country where English is the only official language.
• The demonstrated ability to write software competently. This requirement can be met during your course of study in the program. Students may still apply to the program if they do not have programming skills. These skills can be developed after the student has been admitted to the program and will be demonstrated by successfully completing one of the implementation courses.
• Candidates may be considered for admission by the HCI Admissions Committee if they do not meet all these requirements but otherwise show outstanding potential. However, all students must meet the university’s minimum requirements for admission.

Master of Science Coursework Option

The CS Department typically does not admit students into the MS Coursework-only option; it is typically used for PhD students to get the MS “along the way” to the PhD. Students taking a terminal MS degree are expected to complete the thesis. Students desiring a coursework-only Master's level degree should enter the CS MEng program instead.

To complete the MS coursework option, students must complete the PhD qualifier process, complete the courses on their PhD plan of study, and complete 5974 Independent Study for three credits.

Note: Students entering the program prior to Spring 2020 are eligible to use the old rules (in their entirety) instead of the rules on this page.

Here are the steps needed to complete the M.S. Along the Way.

• Student first needs to have an approved POS on file for their PhD.
• Student needs to have credit for the PhD Qualifier process.
• You will need to submit the Independent Study request prior to the first day of classes in the semester you actually register for the course.
• We do not recommend taking the independent study in the summer term as you will typically have to pay tuition for it.
• Once the Independent Study is approved by Dr. Shaffer, your graduate coordinator will register you for the independent study course.
• Student submits their MS POS using our worksheet ( https://hosting.cs.vt.edu/gpc/forms/MSPHDPlan.pdf ) to their respective coordinator using the  Computer Science Graduate Program Form Submission Portal
• Once the MS POS is approved in Banner, student then completes the Application for Degree (AFD) paper form ( https://graduateschool.vt.edu/content/dam/graduateschool_vt_edu/forms/Degree-Certificate_Conferral_Request.pdf ) and submits to the Graduate School through their Forms Submission Portal ( http://tiny.cc/VTgradforms ).
• Student completes Request for Final Exam *paper* form (not ESS). Students should contact the Graduate School for the for the form. Refer to the Graduate School's What You Need To Graduate page for more information
• The Graduate School will send the Final Exam Card to the student.
• Student signs the Final Exam Card, secures the signatures of their committee members, and sends it back to the Graduate School through their Forms Submission Portal ( http://tiny.cc/VTgradforms ).
• Only for those who are doing a thesis option for their MS Along the Way: The Graduate School will send an ETD form to complete (this is rare).
• Done! Your MS Along the Way will be awarded! Back to working on the PhD.

Apply for Non-Degree: Course Only

Purdue University's College of Engineering offers an online non-degree option that helps students prepare for graduate-level courses, explore graduate study, or develop new skills. If you wish to take a graduate-level engineering course without being formally admitted to an advanced degree program, you may do so under non-degree admission status. Students are permitted to take up to 12 credits in the non-degree status.  There is no fee to apply. Students in non-degree status will receive official Purdue academic credit for courses as an online graduate student in the College of Engineering. You must hold a bachelor's degree and have the necessary background for any courses you wish to take.   

Enrollment in courses as a non-degree student does not guarantee future admission to a degree program. If you are admitted later to an advanced degree or graduate certificate, a maximum of 12 credits taken in non-degree status may be applied. Check with the department of your intended degree program for their allowable pre-admission credits. Non-degree seeking students also receive the support of a student services team who can help them throughout their journey in the Interdisciplinary Engineering program.

The mechanical engineering (ME) profession is dedicated to applying principles of physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics in the analysis, design, manufacturing and maintenance of mechanical components, devices, and systems. Oregon State's graduate program in ME is designed to educate leaders who will develop and improve systems for transforming energy, health, materials, and information to meet the needs of society.

Graduate Programs in Industrial Engineering

Industrial engineering (IE) is a profession dedicated to the design, integration, and optimization of systems of people and machines that produce and deliver high quality goods and services. Oregon State University offers graduate studies in IE leading to MEng, MS, and Ph.D. degrees. At OSU we can prepare you for an industrial, academic, service or government career in advanced manufacturing, engineering management, human systems engineering, information systems engineering, and manufacturing systems engineering. To be eligible for graduate studies in the industrial engineering graduate program at Oregon State University, applicants must have a baccalaureate or master’s degree in science, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or business as well as at least one course in each of the following preparatory areas: linear algebra, statistics, engineering economy and computer programming.

Graduate Programs in Materials Science

Materials Science is inherently interdisciplinary, involving fundamental aspects of chemistry, physics, biology, geoscience, agricultural science, mathematics, and engineering. The Materials Science graduate program at Oregon State both embraces and reflects this interdisciplinarity. Administratively headquartered in MIME, the program spans three colleges and nine academic units and offers five areas of concentration: structural materials and mechanical behavior of materials; electroceramic materials; polymer materials; electronic materials; and materials nano-processing.

Graduate Programs in Robotics

The Robotics graduate program at Oregon State spans disiplines in the College of Engineering, with core faculty from Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical & Computer Engineering. Affilliations and collaborations across the university include oceanography, biomechanics, art, forestry, agriculture, and other programs. Students may earn Ph.D., M.S. degrees in Robotics or choose an appropriate double major, such as Robotics and Computer Science, to appear on their diplomas. The program includes core areas of robotics, including actuation, locomotion, manipulation, dynamics, control, sensing, artificial intelligence, and human/robot interaction.

How to decide between postgraduate research and coursework

It can be a little tricky figuring out which postgraduate degree is for you. That’s why we’ve done the work for you to clarify the differences between a coursework degree and a research degree, and where each could take your career.

The main difference between these two styles is coursework has classes and research has a thesis.

Postgraduate coursework: advanced classes

In a nutshell: an advanced continuation of undergrad-style learning.

Choosing a coursework degree means you’ll attend lectures and tutorials, complete assignments and sit exams – just like your first degree. You’ll be taught discrete units that are part of a set program and at a higher academic level than your undergrad.

Coursework degrees aim to deepen your knowledge and enhance your undergraduate degree with postgraduate training, focusing you towards a specific profession. Alternatively, you can use your undergraduate degree to pivot and pursue a new area of study at postgraduate level.

For instance, you may have completed a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English and Japanese, then realised you’d like be a high school teacher, so you enrol in a Master of Teaching (Secondary) .

Or perhaps you did a Bachelor of Science majoring in Engineering Science and after working for a couple of years, you now want to start your own business. Enrolling in a Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation could get you there.

Also bear in mind, some coursework courses can involve a research element such as the completion of a minor thesis. This forms part of training your time management and written skills.

Postgraduate research: independent thesis

In a nutshell: solo research project to produce an original thesis.

Taking on a postgraduate research degree provides you with the unique opportunity to follow your interest in an area of research and contribute to the field.

You’ll work on your own project, under the guidance of an academic supervisor who you have chosen, with the aim of producing, presenting and submitting a final thesis. This final thesis is the culmination of your original research and investigation – an original contribution to knowledge.

You can often undertake any project of your choosing, as long as you can find a supervisor to connect with. Once you’ve found a potential supervisor, meet with them to discuss your project proposal and see if they agree to supervise you.

If you’re interested in completing a PhD or are thinking about a career in academia, a research degree is a popular decision. This type of study enables you to demonstrate your capacity to conduct research independently and form a distinct contribution to an area.

So what’s ‘honours’, then?

Honours  is the opportunity to extend your undergraduate degree by a year – a sort of bridging year between undergrad and postgrad. The benefit is setting yourself apart from other undergraduate grads, as employers value the skills gained from the independent research project you’ll complete.

Honours is reserved for students who demonstrate strong academic performance in their final-year units. You may be invited to consider honours or you can apply directly . Students considering a research master’s or PhD are strongly encouraged to complete an honours year as a research training exercise and a taster of what’s to come in the research life.

The University of Oregon only accepts transfer credit received directly from regionally accredited colleges and universities. 

• Credits earned at junior colleges and community colleges are always transferred at the lower division level. 
• Credits earned at a four-year institution are transferred at both the lower and upper-division credit, depending on what level the original course was taught.
• High school transcripts: Must be sent to the Office of Admissions at [email protected] .

Transcripts received by fax or as email attachments are not considered official.  Please work directly with your institutions regarding sending transcripts electronically. 

Returning to the University of Oregon to complete a degree or start a new degree program?

Official transcripts must be sent to the Office of the Registrar for evaluation of transfer credit if:

• More than 10 years have passed since you last attended the University of Oregon.
• You attended another college/university since last attending the University of Oregon.
• You did not submit a University of Oregon transcript.

It is important that your transfer record reflects accurate coursework and grades. Transfer equivalents are based on current transfer tables. 

Transferred Credit and Degree Requirements

Students may transfer in an unlimited number of credits to clear degree requirements, but only 124 credits from junior or community colleges will be counted toward the total number of credits required for the degree (of this only 90 credits may be transferred from an international junior college). 

Remember that students must earn a minimum number of upper-division credits (62) in order to graduate. Therefore, students who transfer the full 124 credits from a community college will ultimately graduate with more than the required minimum of 180 credits for the BA or BS degrees.

Not only do Democrats fashion themselves the protectors of “democracy,” they claim to be champions of decency.

Well, if the second day of the Democratic National Convention is any indication, the left doesn’t have any claim to the moral high ground.

For one thing, no one at the DNC seemed even mildly constrained by the truth.

More than once, for instance, Democrats falsely claimed that former President Donald Trump had referred to the tiki torch Nazis of Charlottesville as “very fine people.”

Democrats also falsely accused the former president of instructing Americans to “inject bleach” during the COVID pandemic.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who’s painstakingly ignored the ugly and often violent Jew-hatred that’s infected his party, accused Trump of peddling antisemitism.

Speaker after speaker warned that Trump, a relative moderate on social issues, was going to ban in vitro fertilization, even though the former president has explicitly rejected any limits on fertility treatments.

So it made all the sense in the world that the second night of the DNC featured former President Barack Obama, a man who probably did more to polarize American politics than any in modern history.

And the vacuous religiosity and hypocritical moralizing of the Obamas was on full display.

It began with the former president’s wife, Michelle, a strong speaker who can deliver a mind-bending platitude with the best of them.

Michelle pre-emptively accused anyone who opposed the Dems’ presidential nominee, Kamala Harris, of being driven by racism and misogyny — basically, the same con the Obamas ran when they were in the White House.

When it was former President Obama’s turn, he lamented the ugliness of modern American politics before mocking Trump’s “weird obsession with crowd sizes” by gesturing with his hands to signify a small length.

Obama moaned that our politics had turned citizens against each other, before accusing Republicans of being insular, slacked-jawed hatemongers.

As George Will once wrote, Obama is “a pyromaniac in a field of straw men.”

But perhaps the most confusing aspect of the night was Obama’s call for a return to decency. The former president, in fact, argued that America needed “a new chapter, a better story,” even though his own vice president, Joe Biden, has been in office for nearly four years.

Come to think of it, Kamala Harris has also been in office for nearly four years . What has either done to make our politics less divisive or our lives more joyful?

Politics is indecent in America today as it has been for a long time. And the DNC offered us another example of how low we’ve sunk.

Harley-Davidson bows to anti-DEI campaign

Harley-davidson answers dei critics by announcing policy changes..

Harley-Davidson on Monday responded to the bad publicity it’s received over diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives that had become the target of conservative activists.

In a posting on the social media platform X, the Milwaukee-based company said that as part of an internal review, it would no longer participate in Human Rights Campaign scoring, a ranking of companies aimed at promoting equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transsexual, and queer individuals and communities.

Furthermore, employee training will be related to the needs of the business and will be absent of socially motivated content – and that only legally required training has ever been mandatory at the company.

All sponsorship activities will now be centrally approved and managed efforts through the company or the Harley-Davidson Foundation.

“As a consumer brand, we will focus exclusively on growing the sport of motorcycling and retaining our loyal riding community, in addition to the support we already provide to first responders, active military members and veterans,” Harley said.

Conservative activists had called for boycotts of Harley-Davidson, saying the company supported LGBTQ+ initiatives and that employees attended training on how to be an ally to members of the LGBTQ+ community.

Similar attacks were launched against John Deere and Tractor Supply in recent months.

In its posting, Harley said it was, “saddened by the negativity on social media over the last few weeks, designed to divide the Harley-Davidson community.”

“As a company, we take this issue very seriously, and it is our responsibility to respond with clarity, action and facts,” the company said.

“We see it as every leader’s role to ensure we have an employee base that reflects our customers and the geographies in which we operate. It is critical to our business that we hire and retain the best talent and that all employees feel welcome. That said, we have not operated a DEI function since April 2024, and we do not have a DEI function today. We do not have hiring quotas and we no longer have supplier diversity spend goals,” Harley said.
