New solar farms can benefit nature – here’s how

If you were told solar farms could take up to 0.3% of the total land area in the UK by 2035, would you take up a banner and march to parliament in protest? It’s hard to imagine anyone feeling troubled by such a perceptibly small figure.

Instead, if you were told a solar farm the size of 960 football pitches was to be built just outside your front door, would you join your local community to object it as loudly as possible? That’s easier to imagine.

Perceptions of scale and proximity aside, there was no shortage of opposing voices when the new Labour government approved three mega solar farms in the east of England last month – together they account for about two thirds of the entire solar energy capacity installed in 2023.

But solar farms don’t just have to be about low carbon electricity, they could also help reverse biodiversity decline. Under appropriate management and the right policies , solar farms have the potential to deliver benefits for nature and climate.

Our team’s research on solar farms across the UK shows that these energy facilities can boost local pollinator populations and enhance pollination services to adjacent crops. For instance, managing solar farms as wildflower meadows can benefit bumblebee foraging and nesting, while larger solar farms can increase pollinator densities in surrounding landscapes compared to smaller sites managed as turf grass.

Solar farms have been found to boost the diversity and abundance of certain plants, invertebrates and birds, compared to that on farmland, if solar panels are integrated with vegetation, even in urban areas.

Solar farms can also deliver multiple “ecosystem services” in addition to biodiversity conservation, including food production and support for rural activities such as recreation.

Yet, as with any changes, there will be winners and losers. Some species, such as bats, find it harder to forage for insects and travel along protected corridors of habitat due to to the presence of solar farms. The jury is still out on whether solar farms change the soil’s capacity to store carbon. With clearer understanding of how different species respond to the presence of solar farms, the design, location and management of these facilities can be adapted accordingly to benefit nature.

Solar farms may challenge some deeply held perceptions in the UK of a cultural “green” countryside dotted with lush farmlands in which wildlife co-exist in apparent harmony with human-dominated land uses.

However, centuries of agricultural intensification have pushed several species and habitats to the brink in the UK, a nation that’s been highlighted as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world .

Huge potential

The UK’s commitment to slash carbon emissions to meet net zero targets by 2030 may bring a fivefold increase in solar energy deployment in the next five years. This will probably intensify the debate around competition for agricultural land and community acceptance of solar developments. It also provides an opportunity for policy to embed strong benefits for biodiversity.

Regardless of the potential benefits offered by the creation of wildlife habitats in and around solar farms, one common theme that emerges from most studies is the importance of locating, designing and managing solar farms in a nature-friendly way.

However, design and management alone are unlikely to deliver all the positive outcomes that could be possible from solar farm expansion.

Appropriate public policies that link net zero targets with nature recovery could help ensure that solar farms can be managed to enhance biodiversity. This could happen by making solar farms eligible for financial incentives that promote wildlife. In other words, the new government must roll out policies that will incentivise solar farm operators to manage land in a way that benefits nature, as recommended in our recent study .

The recent announcement by the UK government to review its own environmental improvement plan to deliver legally binding targets to save nature offers a great opportunity to embed solar farms in nature recovery plans, tackle biodiversity loss and increase climate resilience.

Global Waste Management Outlook 2024 for Youth: Beyond and age of waste - Turning rubbish into a resource

Jointly published with the Children and Youth Major Group to UNEP (CYMG), this report provides an updated analysis of global waste generation and management since 2018. 

The original Global Waste Management Outlook is a response to UNEP Resolutions 2/7 and 4/7, offering an updated assessment of global waste management. The report provides data analysis, explores different waste management scenarios, and evaluates their impacts on society, the environment, and the economy. It offers guidance for stakeholders, including multinational development banks, national governments, municipalities, the private sector, and citizens, with a particular focus on young people.

Waste pollution poses significant risks to infants, children, and youth, affecting their health due to their developing bodies and vulnerable immune systems. Contamination from landfills and hazardous waste, along with inadequate waste management, increases the risk of respiratory illnesses, gastrointestinal disorders, and developmental delays.

Engaging youth in combating waste pollution is crucial, as they will face the long-term consequences of today’s waste management practices. The Youth Summary of the Global Waste Management Outlook 2024 aims to equip young people with the knowledge and tools needed to address these challenges. Why Japan issued its first-ever 'megaquake advisory' — and what that means

• The warning followed a 7.1-magnitude earthquake off the country’s southern coast.
• That raises the risk of an even larger quake on the Nankai Trough, an underwater subduction zone that scientists believe is capable of producing temblors up to magnitude 9.1.

After a 7.1-magnitude earthquake shook southern islands in Japan on Thursday, the country’s meteorological agency sent out an ominous warning: Another, larger earthquake could be coming, and the risk will be especially high over the next week. In the first “megaquake advisory” it has ever issued, the agency said that the risk of strong shaking and a tsunami are greater than usual on the Nankai Trough, a subduction zone with the potential to produce magnitude 8 or 9 temblors. Area residents, it said, should prepare.

The message was not a prediction, but a forecast of enhanced risk — and it shows how far seismologists have come in understanding the dynamics of subduction zone earthquakes. 

Here’s what to know about the situation. 

A dangerous subduction zone 

The Nankai Trough is an underwater subduction zone where the Eurasian Plate collides with the Philippine Sea Plate, forcing the latter under the former and into the Earth’s mantle. 

Subduction zone faults build stress, and a so-called megathrust earthquake takes place when a locked fault slips and releases that stress. “Megaquake” is a shortened version of the name. These zones have produced the most powerful earthquakes in Earth’s history. 

The Pacific “Ring of Fire” is a collection of subduction zones. In the U.S., the Cascadia subduction zone off the West Coast runs from Vancouver Island, Canada, to Cape Mendocino, California.  

The Nankai Trough fault has several segments, but if the entire margin of the fault were to slip at once, Japanese scientists believe the trough is capable of producing an earthquake of up to magnitude 9.1 .

If a megaquake were to happen near Japan, the Philippine Sea Plate would lurch, perhaps as much as 30 to 100 feet, near the country’s southeast coast, producing intense shaking. The vertical displacement of the seafloor would cause a tsunami and push waves toward the coast of Japan. Those waves could reach nearly 100 feet in height, according to estimates from Japanese scientists published in 2020 .

A history of big quakes

The Nankai Trough has produced large earthquakes roughly every 100 to 150 years, a study indicated last year . Japan’s Earthquake Research Committee said in January 2022 said there was a 70% to 80% chance of a megathrust earthquake in the subsequent 30 years. 

Large Nankai Trough earthquakes tend to come in pairs, with the second often rupturing in the subsequent two years. The most recent examples were “twin” earthquakes on the Nankai Trough in 1944 and 1946.

The phenomenon is due to the segmented nature of the fault; when one segment slips, it can stress another. 

Thursday’s magnitude-7.1 earthquake took place on or near the subduction zone , according to the United States Geological Survey. 

Harold Tobin, a University of Washington professor who has studied the Nankai Trough, said the magnitude-7.1 quake took place in a segment that shakes more frequently than others. Regular earthquakes can relieve stress, so the possibility that the segment itself produces a big earthquake is less of a concern. The worry is the earthquake’s proximity to a segment that’s been building stress since the 1940s. “It’s adjacent to the western Nankai region and that’s clearly locked up. That’s the reason for alert and concern,” Tobin said. 

A forecast, not a prediction 

Scientists can’t predict earthquakes, but they are developing the ability to forecast times of heightened risk, particularly in areas with frequent shaking and good monitoring equipment, like Japan. 

Japanese authorities are asking residents to prepare, review evacuation routes and pay attention to potential future warnings . While the risk of a large quake is higher than usual, that doesn’t mean it will happen anytime soon. Japanese government warning guidelines suggest that the chance a large earthquake follows a magnitude-7 within a week is roughly “once per a few hundred times,” according to the study last year. 

The most likely outcome is that the recent shaking won’t trigger anything, even though the probability of a large earthquake is higher.

“We might wait decades before Nankai has another earthquake,” Tobin said. 

A known danger 

In 2011, an area of the seafloor roughly the size of Connecticut lurched all at once, producing a magnitude-9.1 earthquake — the third biggest recorded worldwide since 1900. That megathrust earthquake caused a tsunami off Japan’s eastern coast. More than 18,000 people died in the tsunami and earthquake, according to the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. 

The following year, the Japanese government revised its natural disaster scenarios and found that some 323,000 people could die in a worst-case scenario earthquake on the Nankai Trough, mostly from tsunami effects. 

The Cascadia Subduction Zone poses a similar risk for the U.S. West Coast, though megathrust earthquakes are expected there less often — every 300 to 500 years. This fault has the capability of producing a magnitude-9.1 earthquake and tsunami waves 80 feet in height. Researchers recently mapped the fault in detail and found it was divided into four segments.

AI Is Heating the Olympic Pool

In the suburbs of northeast Paris, there is a giant terra-cotta-colored warehouse with a labyrinth of windowless corridors inside. A deafening whir emanates from behind rows and rows of anonymous gray doors, and under white striplights, disposable earbuds are available to protect passersby from the noise.

These are the uncanny innards of one of France’s newest data centers, completed earlier this year, which is now being used to heat the new Olympic Aquatics Center —visible from the data center’s roof. When US swimming star Katie Ledecky won her ninth Olympic gold medal last week, she did it by speeding through water heated, at least in part, by the data center’s machinery.

Known as PA10, this noisy site belongs to the American data center company Equinix—the whirring sound is the company’s cooling systems trying to lower the temperature of its clients’ computer servers. “PA10 is especially made for high-density racks,” says the site’s data center engineer Imane Erraji, pointing to a tower of servers capable of training AI.

For the past month, the data center has turned its hot air waste into water and piped it to a local energy system run by French utility company Engie . Once it runs at full capacity, Equinix expects to export 6.6 thermal megawatts of heat out of the building—the equivalent of more than 1,000 homes.

As projections suggest AI is about to turbocharge the amount of electricity data centers need—Equinix predicts power consumption per rack could rise by as much as 400 percent—PA10 reflects a European phenomenon whereby officials attempt to mitigate the environmental impact of the coming AI energy crunch and transform data centers into part of the infrastructure keeping cities warm.

Erraji describes the project as a “win-win situation” for both Equinix and the local suburb of Seine-Saint-Denis. Equinix can pipe the heat out of the building so its cooling devices don’t have to work so hard, she explains, while the city gets a cheap source of heat produced locally. After the project received a €2 million ($2.1 million) investment from the city of Paris, Equinix has committed to providing the energy free-of-charge for 15 years. In June, the mayor of Seine-Saint-Denis, Mathieu Hanotin, also called attention to the environmental benefits, claiming that using the data center as an energy source will spare the region 1,800 metric tons of CO 2 emissions per year.

Yet France has a “very low-carbon electricity mix,” according to the International Energy Agency (IEA), with 62 percent of its electricity generated by nuclear power. And critics say multiplying heat-reuse projects are a distraction from the real issue: the amount of land, water, and electricity data centers consume. “When the data centers are already here, of course it's better to reuse the heat than do nothing,” says Anne-Laure Ligozat, computer science professor at France’s National School of Computer Science for Industry and Business (ENSIIE). “But the problem is the number of data centers and their energy consumption.” There would be less of an environmental impact to to have a basic electricity heating system without the data center, she adds.

Recently, projects capturing and reusing heat to warm homes , offices , or universities have sprung up across the region, as data centers face increasing pressure to help the European Union meet ambitious environmental targets, such as reducing emissions by 55 percent by 2030, says Simon Hinterholzer, researcher at Germany’s Borderstep Institute for Innovation and Sustainability. Over the past two years, these projects became more popular as European energy prices spiked , prompting local governments to look around for cheap sources of heat to replace Russian gas. “There's definitely a correlation with the war in Ukraine,” Hinterholzer adds.

Once data centers are built, researchers agree these heat reuse projects make sense. “It makes a significant difference,” says Shaolei Ren, an associate professor specializing in sustainable computing at the University of California, Riverside. Ren estimates that cooling technology can contribute up to 50 percent of a data center’s total energy consumption. “If companies reuse the heat, essentially, they are slashing the energy required for cooling.”

But in order to claim there are benefits to heat-reuse projects, there has to be scrutiny of where data centers source their power to start with. Equinix says PA10 energy demands are 100 percent “covered” by renewable energy sources, including using power purchase agreements (PPAs), where tech companies pay wind or solar farms for the equivalent power they produce, even if that power is not directly connected to the data center.

“At this point, there's no data center that's running entirely on renewables,” says Ren. “When tech companies claim to be running their data centers on renewables, or say they’re carbon neutral, they're referring to carbon offsetting, which means they plug their data center into the power grid and they are doing some offsetting methods elsewhere.” Companies that rely on PPAs, for example, do not always buy renewable energy from the same country where their data centers are based.

Over the past nine days, the roar from the crowds at the Olympic pool may have eclipsed the whirring of the nearby Equinix data center. But in Paris, as in other parts of Europe, skepticism remains toward this booming industry and the disruption AI is set to introduce. The major issue, according to Ligozat, is the debate about the continued building of data centers and what applications they should be used for. “To me the main question is, should we continue building data centers?” she says. “And not, should we reuse the heat?”
