Eseys or Essays – Which is Correct?

  • by Sarah Thompson
  • March 3, 2024

Let’s have a conversation about the common mistake people make when writing the word “Essays.” Many individuals seem to get confused between “Eseys” and “Essays” and find themselves wondering which spelling is correct. Today, we will debunk this confusion and establish the correct spelling once and for all.

To address this issue, it is pertinent to emphasize that “Essays” is the correct spelling of the word. The incorrect term “Eseys” is a common misspelling resulting from a typographical error or a lack of familiarity with the correct spelling.

Now, let’s learn the reasons why “Essays” is the right spelling. Firstly, “Essays” is the plural form of the singular noun “Essay.” When we want to refer to more than one essay, we simply add an “s” to the end of the word. This is the conventional English rule for forming plurals of nouns, and it applies to “Essay” as well. For example, “I have written multiple essays on various topics.” Here, the correct plural form of “Essay” is used to convey the idea that the speaker has written more than one essay.

Moreover, we can also look at past forms of verbs to further solidify the correct spelling. For instance, the verb form of “Essay” is “Essayed.” “Essayed” is the past tense form, and by examining the conjugation of the verb, we can recognize that “Essays” is indeed the accurate plural form. You might say, “He essayed his thoughts on the subject,” to convey that someone expressed their ideas in the form of an essay.

To illustrate the incorrect spelling, “Eseys,” it is crucial to emphasize that this word does not exist in Standard English. It is a mistake that has often emerged due to a lack of knowledge or inattentiveness during writing. Therefore, it is essential to be attentive and avoid this misspelling in formal writing, as it may weaken your language skills and leave a negative impression on the reader.

In conclusion, we have effectively established that the correct spelling of the word referring to multiple essays is “Essays.” “Eseys” is an erroneous form that should be avoided. Remember, using proper grammar and spelling not only enhances your communication skills, but it also showcases your proficiency in the English language. So, the next time you find yourself unsure about whether to write “Eseys” or “Essays,” confidently choose the latter for an accurate and grammatically correct sentence!

So, keep practicing your writing skills, pay attention to proper grammar, and remember the correct spelling of “Essays.” With dedication and practice, you will become an exceptional writer and expert in the English language.

  • 5. Añadir -es si el sustantivo acaba en -s, -x, -z, -sh o -ch

5. Sustituir por -es cuando acaba en -is

  • 6. Si la palabra acaba en –y, y va precedida de consonante, sustitúyela por –i y añade –es

7. Sustituir por -i cuando termina en -us

8. algunos sustantivos van siempre en singular y otros en plural, sustantivos con la misma forma en singular y plural, sustantivos que no tienen forma singular, sustantivos que no tienen forma plural, 9. algunos sustantivos tienen un plural irregular.

1. Añadir -s  al final de un sustantivo

A la mayoría de sustantivos en inglés , podemos simplemente añadirles el sufijo -s  al final. Fácil, ¿verdad?

dog → dog s perro → perros

apple → apple s manzana → manzanas

mouth → mouth s boca → bocas

photograph → photograph s fotografía → fotografías

A algunos sustantivos que acaban en -o ,  se les añade -es . No existe ninguna  regla gramatical precisa, por tanto no te queda otra que memorizarlos.

potato → potato es patata → patatas

tomato → tomato es tomate → tomates

hero → hero es héroe → héroes

cargo → cargo es cargamento → cargamentos

Excepción : Existen sustantivos que acaban en -o   a los que simplemente se les añade -s  al final.

photo → photo s foto → fotos

taco → taco s taco → tacos

piano → piano s piano → pianos

leaf → lea ves hoja → hojas

knife → kni ves cuchillo → cuchillos

Excepción : Existen sustantivos que terminan en -f o  -fe que forman el plural añadiendo solo una  -s  al final.

roof → roof s tejado → tejados

giraffe → giraffe s jirafa → jirafas

Este tipo de sustantivos suelen estar relacionados con el ámbito educativo o científico:

criteri on → criteri a norma → normas

phenomen on → phenomen a fenómeno → fenómenos

Excepción : Algunos sustantivos que acaban en -on , se les añade simplemente una -s  al final.

lemon → lemon s limón → limones

canyon → canyon s desfiladero → desfiladeros

salon → salon s salón → salones

5. Añadir -es si el sustantivo acaba en -s , -x , -z , -sh o  -ch

bus → bus es autobús → autobuses

box → box es caja → cajas

buzz → buzz es zumbido → zumbidos

wish → wish es deseo → deseos

watch → watch es reloj → relojes

Para los sustantivos que acaban en -is , quita la  -is  y añade  -es .

ax is → ax es eje → ejes

oasis → oas es oasis → oasis

crisis → cris es crisis → crisis

6. Si la palabra acaba en – y , y va precedida de consonante, sustitúyela por – i y añade – es

Para los sustantivos que acaban con la letra  -y , la regla general es quitar la   -y y añadir   -ies al final .

fairy → fair ies hada → hadas

candy → cand ies caramelo → caramelos

dummy → dumm ies títere→  títeres

Excepción : Si hay una vocal antes de la letra -y en la forma singular, solo hay que añadir el sufijo -s.

way → way s forma →  formas

monkey → monkey s mono → monos

toy → toy s juguete → juguetes

guy → guy s chico →  chicos

fungus → fung i hongo → hongos

cactus → cact i cactus →  cactus

stimulus → stimul i estímulo → estímulos

Muchas de estas palabras tienen que ver con biología o los animales.

sheep oveja/s

deer ciervo/s

fish pez/peces

species especie/s

Lo vemos más en vocabulario relacionado con ropa, como:

shorts pantalones cortos

pants (o trousers ) pantalones

jeans vaqueros

scissors tijeras

A estos sustantivos también se les llama sustantivos incontables . No tienen forma plural. Suelen ser sustantivos que conforman grupos o son abstractos:

livestock  ganado

news noticias

slang jerga

bravery valentía

money dinero

Los sustantivos irregulares rompen con todas las reglas de ortografía del plural que hemos visto hasta ahora:

child → children (no childs) niño → niños

mouse → mice (no mouses) ratón → ratones

man → men (no mans) hombre →  hombres

woman → women (no womans) mujer → mujeres

die → dice ( no dies) dado → dados

knife kni cuchillo
life li la vida
