Whether you’re an experienced artist or just starting your journey, a well-crafted resume is essential in showcasing your skills and securing opportunities in the competitive beauty industry. This guide provides real makeup artist resume examples, tailored advice, and expert tips directly addressing the unique needs of makeup artists. You’ll have the knowledge and strategies to create an impressive resume that communicates your unique skills and sets you apart as a talented professional.

1. Create a profile by summarizing your makeup artist qualifications

When crafting a resume profile, it’s essential to captivate readers with a concise yet impactful summary of what you offer. Using two to three sentences, begin by mentioning your years of experience and mastery of various makeup techniques, such as bridal, editorial, or special effects. Use industry-specific keywords and terminology to highlight your relevant knowledge and alignment with the role.

To make your profile even more engaging, consider incorporating an impressive stat or achievement, such as the number of satisfied clients, collaborations with renowned brands, or awards received. Your resume profile paragraph should focus on showcasing your expertise, passion for creativity, and ability to adapt to diverse styles and requirements. A well-crafted profile will leave a lasting impression, enticing employers or clients to explore the rest of your resume and portfolio.

Senior-Level Profile Example:

A seasoned makeup artist with over 10 years of experience working for TV networks, fashion designers, magazines, and well-known photographers. A proven track record of providing quality beauty services in fast-paced and high-pressure environments. Adept at communicating effectively with a wide range of clients.

Entry-Level Profile Example:

A creative makeup artist with three years of experience delivering high-end makeup services for clients. Advanced knowledge of a wide range of makeup application techniques. Adept at building rapport with clientele and educating customers on the benefits of at-home products.

2. Add your makeup artist experience with compelling examples

Crafting an accomplishment-driven professional experience section is crucial for your resume as it allows you to show your impact and demonstrate skills valued by employers. Start by quantifying your experience, providing the number of projects completed, events worked, or clients served. This numerical information adds credibility and provides a tangible measurement of your success.

Focus on featuring your ability to create diverse makeup looks, work with different skin types and tones, and adapt to specific client preferences. Highlight any notable achievements, such as working with celebrities, participating in fashion shows, or being published in reputable publications. Use action verbs as you list out your accomplishments. Start each bullet point with an action verb to bring a dynamic element to your resume and help describe your work effectively.

Senior-Level Professional Experience Example:

Makeup Artist, BYU TV, Provo, UT

January 2015 – February 2021

  • Ensured the continuity of hair and makeup throughout long days of shooting to teams of over 20

Entry-Level Professional Experience Example:

Retail Makeup Artist, Charlotte Tilbury, Los Angeles, CA

July 2019 – present

  • Provide education to customers on the benefits and application of at-home makeup products and achieve over 130% of annual sales quotas year-over-year

3. Outline your education and makeup artist-related certifications

An academic background adds credibility, demonstrates your commitment to professional development, and shows hiring managers that you have the necessary skills and knowledge for the job. Employers in the beauty and cosmetics industry often seek makeup artists with a solid foundation in theory and technique. You can showcase your formal training and qualifications by listing your education, such as a diploma or degree in cosmetology or makeup artistry. Starting with your highest level of education, list the degree name, institution, location, and graduation date.

Beyond formal education, certifications are valuable additions to a makeup artist’s resume. These credentials validate your proficiency in specific areas, such as bridal makeup, special effects, or airbrushing. Create a separate section and format it similarly, providing the certificate name, issuing organization, and date received.

  • [Degree Name]
  • [School Name], [City, State Abbreviation] [Dates Enrolled]
  • Associate in Science in Cosmetology
  • Santa Monica College, Santa Monica, CA, September 2005 – June 2007
  • [Certification Name], [Awarding Organization], [Completion Year]

4. List makeup artist-related skills and proficiencies

As a makeup artist, your skills are the foundation of your craft, and they demonstrate your expertise and proficiency in various techniques and areas of makeup artistry. When including a key skills section on your resume, focus on those directly related to the position you’re applying for. Include both technical and interpersonal skills. You must be able to perform a makeup artist’s technical tasks and interact well with clients to meet their needs and preferences. Review our list of examples below:

Key Skills and Proficiencies
Airbrushing Attention to detail
Color theory Communication
Creativity Critical thinking
Decision-making Detail-oriented
Facial analysis Fashion and editorial
Flexibility Interpersonal skills
Leadership skills Hairstyling
Prosthetics Sanitation and hygiene practices
Special FX makeup Tattoo coverage
Team-oriented Time management

5. Provide a portfolio of your work

Including access to your portfolio is vital for demonstrating your talent, creativity, and versatility. A portfolio allows potential employers to see visual examples of your work, giving them a glimpse into your unique artistic style and skills. There are several ways to present your work. Let’s take a look at a few of the most common strategies.

More traditionally, you could attach a physical portfolio with high-quality photographs or prints of your makeup artistry. This option can be particularly impactful during in-person interviews. Whether or not you include a physical representation of your work, provide a link to your digital portfolio or website. Online portfolios allow you to feature a broader range of examples, give more details about each project, and potentially include client testimonials. Provide access to your social media platforms as well, such as Instagram or YouTube, if applicable and up to date.

How To Pick the Best Makeup Artist Resume Template

The purpose of a resume template is to provide a visually appealing framework that effectively presents your qualifications and experiences. The best resume template for a makeup artist has a simple design, classic fonts, and well-structured sections. Choose one that complements your creativity while maintaining a clean and organized appearance. While a resume template can be visually appealing, it’s essential to balance aesthetics and professionalism. Stick with something well-structured and organized, avoiding overly flashy templates that could distract from your content.

How do you align your resume with a makeup artist job description? -

Employment for barbers, hairstylists, and cosmetologists (makeup artists included) is projected to see a much faster-than-average growth of 11% between 2021 and 2031. Over the decade, 65,000 new jobs will be added to the workforce. As makeup artists compete for current and forthcoming positions, they'll need a resume that shines. The best way to stand out in a crowd of applicants is to align your resume with the job you're applying for.

If you have a specific makeup artist job opening in mind, it's especially crucial to tailor your resume to enhance your chances of standing out as an ideal candidate. Start by carefully reviewing the job description and noting the key skills, qualifications, and requirements the hiring manager or client seeks. Then, incorporate these elements into your resume by highlighting relevant experiences, emphasizing matching skills, and aligning your achievements with the role's needs.

What is the best makeup artist resume format? -

When choosing a resume format for makeup artists, reverse chronological is often the most suitable. This format emphasizes your work history and showcases your artistic career progression. It also lets you feature your most recent experience, projects, and accomplishments in the beauty industry toward the top of your resume.

For entry-level job seekers, feature your relevant skills, training, and education more prominently in your document. That said, still provide detailed bullet points for previous work experience, even outside the beauty industry. Although these jobs won’t be fully relevant to your current career goals, this provides you with an opportunity to highlight transferable skill sets and experience, such as client relations, communication, and customer service.

For the education section , ensure you include:

  • Higher education degrees pertinent to the industry or those at a postgraduate level;
  • The start and end dates of your education, along with the name of the institution you graduated from;
  • Your GPA and relevant coursework, but only if they are impressive and applicable to the role.

Additionally, create a separate certifications section to spotlight your most notable recognitions. Another excellent place to feature a leading industry certificate is in your resume header, right after your name.

Below is a list of key industry certifications that are often sought after by recruiters

The top 5 certifications for your makeup artist resume:

Choosing between a makeup artist resume summary or objective

Many may argue that, in recent times, the makeup artist resume summary or objective has become completely obsolete.

But the reality is different as both of these resume sections provide you with an opportunity to :

  • integrate makeup artist-vital keywords
  • showcase your accomplishments
  • answer why you're applying for this particular role.

The difference (between the summary and the objective) is that the:

  • Resume objective puts your career goals in a more prominent position.
  • Resume summary focuses more on career milestones.

We recommend you select the summary if you happen to have plenty of experience you'd like to spotlight from the very start of your makeup artist resume.

Meanwhile, the objective is ideal for those candidates who'd like to further prove their suitability for the role with their goals and soft skills.

We've featured some industry professional makeup artist resume samples to the best resume summary and objective structures:

What Matters Most: Your Skills & Work History

Your resume skills and work experience

To prove what a skilled makeup artist you are, you’ll need to provide, well, your skills! Recruiters want to see what kinds of tools you have in your bag and what qualifies you to work as a top-tier makeup artist.

Think technically about your abilities: Each skill you list should relate directly to cosmetics and artistry, alongside in-studio collaboration or client interactions.

The skills you provide in this section should also be highly specific. Don’t flatten abilities like “active listening” and “client consultations” into something generic like “people skills”!

9 top makeup artist skills

  • Design Principles
  • Team Management
  • Social Media Promos
  • Beauty Trends
  • Color Theory
  • Active Listening
  • Makeup Application

Sample makeup artist work experience bullet points

That’s an impressive skills list ! But what have you used those abilities for? Recruiters want to know how you’ve already created the ideal face for a stage production or polished up the perfect look for a set of professional head shots.

Your goal here is to show the impact you’ve personally made within your field. How did you reduce supply costs by organizing a better stock flow in the makeup supply room? How did your store event advertisements expand your customer base?

Oh, and give those points some numbers! Recruiters want to see metrics of your success like dollar savings, increased customer return rates, and ratings.

Here’s a set of examples:

  • Applied makeup with 91% accuracy according to store and brand procedures, increasing client satisfaction by 8%
  • Collaborated with salon owners and staff members to plan monthly salon events, increasing store traffic by 17%
  • Trained and mentored other makeup artists, decreasing time-to-productivity by 9% and reducing staff churn by 14%
  • Updated “tips and techniques” manual for new makeup collections, boosting efficiency to reduce weekly labor by 9 hours while elevating client satisfaction by 51%

Top 5 Tips for Your Makeup Artist Resume

  • A lot of success factors are best measured in percentages, but if you feel like your achievements could use some spicing up, add a few words of context! Mention why you did what you did to reinforce the impact you had. Was it the best move to make as an indie artists? Did you boost your store’s brand reach?
  • Just as you want to maintain control over the colors in your makeup palette, you’ll want to corral the colors on your resume. Don’t use anything too bright or opt for any kooky fonts. Recruiters need readability before anything else.
  • If you’ve worked with other makeup artists, clients, or studio owners who will vouch for your incredible application and client relation skills, share the details! A couple of professional reference letters can dramatically increase your credibility.
  • Metrics really are important! The most valuable part of your resume is arguably your experience, and you want each example to be as strong as possible. For example: Don’t leave out how your SFX work boosted ratings and attendance for a local charity play.
  • If you’re applying to work as a freelance or independent makeup artist, feature examples and skills that relate. If you’re interested in doing makeup for professional portraits at a studio, then emphasize qualifications that relate to that niche instead.

If you have ample experience working with makeup, costuming, or a similarly related field, then probably not. But if you’re starting out fresh as a makeup artist, a resume objective can really help set off your career goals!

Limit yourself to one page—recruiters will thank you, and you’ll thank yourself when your resume gets a second read! If you’re struggling to pare down those fascinating tales of fine makeup artistry, put them in a cover letter .

This is a common one, but it’s not as tricky as it sounds. Look for skills and accomplishments that overlap between your previous field and your new role as a makeup artist (think stuff like customer service and promotional projects).

What is a Makeup Artist Resume & why do you need it?

Curating your makeup resumes can give you the golden chance to stand out for the recruiters to recognize your skills and raise your chances of being shortlisted for the targeted job.

Your freelance makeup artist resume is most likely the first means of contact between you and the recruiters.

It is not an easy task for the recruiters to read through every resume that they receive, hence most of them rely on the ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to filter through resumes.

Doing so helps them pick the resume that ranks high on the ATS and your aim here is to rank high on the ATS if you want to raise your chances of being shortlisted by the recruiters.

Despite being an efficient applicant, your freelance makeup artist resume has a high chance of being rejected if it is not ATS-friendly.

Hence, always make sure that your freelance makeup artist resume is ATS-targeted so that you can go one step closer to your dream job.

Make sure to read Hiration's tips of dos and don'ts while writing a resume to create the perfect ATS-friendly resume.

In the meanwhile, you can get your existing resume professionally reviewed by Hiration’s Resume Review Service.

Makeup Artist Resume Sections

Given below is the list of all the standard functional sections that should be filled at all times:

  • Personal Information
  • Profile Title
  • Summary/Objective
  • Professional Experience

The below-given list refers to the optional sections that you can frame whenever required, provided you possess them:

  • Certifications (if any)
  • Awards & Recognition (if any)
  • Volunteering Experience (if any)
  • Additional Information (if any)

Always maintain a professional approach while curating any section of your resume by thoughtfully framing them.

How to write your Makeup Artist Resume

Everyone follows a different way of writing their resume, likewise, we at Hiration follow three important stages that can help raise the chances for your resume to stand out amongst a sea of average makeup resumes.

The three important stages for writing your resume for makeup artist are given below:

  • Stage 1: Master Makeup Artist Resume
  • Stage 2: First Draft of Makeup Artist Resume
  • Stage 3: Final Draft of Makeup Artist Resume

Now, let us thoroughly discuss these three stages to understand their importance and learn how to apply them while writing any of your freelance makeup artist resume or beginner makeup artist resume.

Master Makeup Artist Resume

Always start by creating a master resume as the first step to utilize it as a master folder of all your details and pieces of information.

All you have to do is stack up all your details and information that you may require while framing your resume for makeup artists.

And do keep in mind that your master makeup resume can be used for both the present time-line and any future updates of your makeup resumes.

Collect every detail and information about your professional experience and educational qualification ventures in this folder.

Try not to miss out on any required details of personal information that the recruiter may need in case they want to get in touch with you for any likely shortlist.

You can also write down all your extra-curricular activities, hobbies, languages that you speak/write (apart from English), and any other additional information that may help enhance your potential as a suitable applicant.

Once you are done with this you need not worry about any unclear information that you are not sure about in the present time-line because you may need them in any possible future updates.

First Draft of Makeup Artist Resume

As part of the second stage of resume writing, you need to compose the first draft of your resume.

The following section needs to be composed in this first draft:

Make sure that every section that you frame in your makeup resumes is thoughtfully curated to have an impact on the recruiters to recognize your potential as a suitable applicant.

Final Draft of Makeup Artist Resume

Finally, for the third stage of writing your resume for makeup artist, you need to compose two important sections that we have briefly described below:

Key Skills : Your key skills should be curated as the last second step. It is so because you have to scan through your entire resume and pick the most effective key skill that you possess and highlight them in this section.

Summary/Objective : Write a summary or a makeup artist resume objective in the last stage while writing your resume for makeup artists. It is so because you have to create an overall statement of your entire professional experience and highlight your most significant efficiency in this section.

Now that we have discussed the three important stages of resume writing, you can follow them religiously and make your resume writing a little less stressful and create a flawless resume.

Make sure to read Hiration's Guide on how to write a resume to learn more about resume writing.

Makeup Artist Resume: Header

Your resume header is a distinct feature in your makeup resumes that needs to be curated with a professional approach.

A well-framed header can help you maintain the unique individuality of your resume and helps the recruiter to easily keep a track of your resume.

Read the following points to be implied while framing your makeup resumes:

  • Your full and real name should be written on the topmost part of your resume.
  • It should be written in 16-20 font-size as the largest text in your resume.
  • If you have a middle name, use only the initial followed by a period.
  • Example: Lily Allen Bing should be written as "Lily A. Bing"

Makeup Artist Resume: Personal Information

Some personal information details need to be provided in your resume so that the recruiters can get in touch with you in case of any likely shortlist.

The following details are required in an ideal personal information section of your makeup artist resume:

  • Contact number

Email Address

Hiration Pro Tip : Try and avoid giving details of your marital status, religious affiliation, or political inclination in your resume unless explicitly asked for. Most countries have forbidden it by law to mention these things as it may lead to biased hiring.

Contact Number

Giving out your contact number serves you with an important purpose.

The recruiters may need to contact you for any likely shortlist to schedule or confirm interviews with you. They may even need to interview you over the phone.

You should keep any possibilities in mind and make sure that you provide your active number through which the recruiters can get to you 24x7.

Avoid making careless mistakes by giving out wrong numbers because you may miss the chance of being contacted by the recruiters in case of any likely shortlist.

Given below is the correct format for writing your mobile number:

  • Use your country’s ISD code as a prefix before your phone number
  • Put a plus sign (+) before the ISD code
  • Eg: +1 82635 82374
Hiration Pro Tip : If you have 2 or more mobile numbers, make sure that you accurately provide only that mobile number on which you are available 24x7. If the recruiter cannot get in touch with you, there is no use of penning down your contact number in your details. Hence, be extra sure that you are writing it correctly in your resume.

Emails are one of the most convenient means of communication in this day and age. It saves time and is a suitable means of official communications.

Always provide your official email address in your resume. Your email ID should have your full/real name at all times for any official purpose.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

Strictly avoid fancy email IDs for official purposes as it may make you seem like an immature person who is not serious about one's career.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

Hiration Pro Tip : Since your email ID is a professional communication channel between you and your recruiter, you should write it as professionally as you can. For example, use your real full name in your email ID. Avoid using flimsy nicknames while drafting your email address in your resume.

Current Location

Keep the following points in mind and apply them while providing your current location on your resume:

  • If you are looking for a job in your own country, simply mention the city and state of your residence. On the contrary, if you are looking for a job in another country, simply mention your city and country of residence.
  • Avoid giving out your house number, street number, and your locality name as those details are unnecessary. You should also avoid giving out any address of past residence or workplace.

Given below is a sample makeup artist resume showcasing the ideal personal information section of your makeup resumes.

It directly reflects where you stand in your field of work. You may write a freelance makeup artist resume, beginner makeup artist resume or a professional resume for makeup artist and it can be reflected through your profile title.

Make sure to write your exact profile title correctly and avoid exaggerating your level of professional status as it may pass as cheating the recruiters.

Remember that your profile title communicates the following facts to the recruiter:

  • Your current designation.
  • Your functional industry.
  • Your level of seniority in your line of work.

Follow the below-mentioned guidelines to write an impeccable profile title:

Makeup Artist Resume: Professional Experience

The main goal of writing your makeup resumes is to bring forth your best to the table and raise your chances of being shortlisted by the recruiters for the targeted job.

The three important factors that can help enhance your professional experience section are discussed below:

  • STAR format

Framing Points

Bucketing & bolding, star format.

STAR format is an important factor that can have a huge impact on the recruiters by creating the cause-effect relationship between your skills and the contributions to an organization by highlighting your achievements.

The full form of STAR is given below:

  • S stands for the situation, background, or context of your contributions as part of your roles and responsibilities.
  • T stands for the actual task that was assigned to you as part of your job profile.
  • A stands for the action that you executed by coming up with your specific strategies and ideas.
  • R stands for the outcome that is the result of the action that you performed in your work.

STAR format brings out the relation between your situation, the assigned task, action, and result which in turn adds value to your efficiency as a suitable applicant.

Try to provide figures of the number to specify your exact contributions or achievements wherever applicable.

Framing your points can be beneficial for you if it is curated in the right way while writing your professional experience on your makeup resumes.

Let us look at the two makeup artist resume examples given below to analyze and discuss the importance of framing points and how it can be applied in your resume writing.

Makeup Artist Resume Example 1

"I have actively handled 20+ clients daily and 300+ monthly to successfully achieve 100% client satisfaction. I have advised 50+ customers regarding skincare routine and make-up techniques that would suit their skin type. Efficiently managed 10+ top models and received 100% positive feedback that was conducted via an online survey. Simultaneously deployed cosmetics in trend to blend the most suitable bridal makeups of 15+ clients."

Makeup Artist Resume Example 2

Handled 20+ clients daily and 300+ monthly to achieve 100% client satisfaction Advised 50+ customers regarding skincare routine & suitable make-up techniques Managed 10+ top models & received 100% positive feedback via online survey Deployed trending cosmetics to blend suitable bridal makeups of 15+ clients

Framing Points: Analysis

By comparing the two makeup artist resume examples, we can see that framing points (example 2) make your points more specific and readable.

On the other hand, writing lengthy paragraphs (example 1) make your points look bulky and may end up being rejected by the recruiters due to its lack of quick readability.

Both the makeup artist resume examples are stating the same points but there is a higher chance that the recruiter would go through the framed points in example 2.

Whereas the recruiters may not want to go through example 1 due to its bulky outlook because they may assume that it is too much to go through in the mere 06-20 seconds that they spend on a resume.

In conclusion, now that we have compared both the makeup artist resume examples always frame your points with bullet points to make your statements clear and make it easier for the recruiters to read through.

Bucketing and bolding should be applied while framing your professional experience section to make your one-liners more organized.

Let us look at the two makeup artist resume examples given below to analyze and understand how it can be implemented in your resumes for makeup artists.

Handled 20+ clients daily and 300+ monthly to achieve 100% client satisfaction Advised 50+ customers regarding skincare routine & suitable make-up techniques Managed 10+ top models & received 100% positive feedback via online survey Deployed trending cosmetics to blend suitable bridal makeups of 15+ clients Ordered genuine cosmetics & maintained an inventory for 1000+ products Recommended clients with imported products to increase the 30% product sales Spearheaded a team of 5 interns & taught them 30+ makeup tricks Promoted as Senior Makeup Artist from Junior Makeup Artist in Jul’ 14 Accomplished 'Best Makeup Artist of the Year Award' Jul ’18
Client Relationship Management & Makeup Application Handled 20+ clients daily and 300+ monthly to achieve 100% client satisfaction Advised 50+ customers regarding skin care routine & suitable make-up techniques Managed 10+ top models & received 100% positive feedback via online survey Deployed trending cosmetics to blend suitable bridal makeups of 15+ clients Maintained Inventory & Team Leadership Ordered genuine cosmetics & maintained an inventory for 1000+ products Recommended clients with imported products to increase the 30% product sales Spearheaded a team of 5 interns & taught them 30+ makeup tricks Key Achievements Promoted as Senior Makeup Artist from Junior Makeup Artist in Jul’ 14 Accomplished 'Best Makeup Artist of the Year Award' Jul ’18

Bucketing & Bolding: Analysis

Both the given makeup artist resume examples are framed by bullet points but bucketing and bolding (example 2) make your one-liners seem more readable and organized.

Framing points (example 1) alone is not enough as it only lists out your one-liners but fails to emphasize them.

Create unique subheadings (bucketing) and list out the relevant points under it.

Next, bold all the figures of numbers highlighting your most efficient skills and achievements.

Doing so can make the recruiters recognize the best of what you possess that can help raise your value as a suitable applicant and raise your chances of being shortlisted.

Remember that both the makeup artist resume examples are stating the same points but there are higher chances for the recruiters to read through example 2 so it is advisable for you to use bucketing and bolding in your one-liners.

To learn more about this section and how to perfect it, read Hiration's Blog on how to compose the work experience in your makeup resumes .

  • Certification course name.
  • Name of the institute of affiliation.
  • Location of the institute of affiliation.
  • Enrollment and completion date of the course in the month & year format .

You can align the above-given points in the below format:

Crafting Your Makeup Artist Resume

As a makeup artist, crafting a resume that reflects your expertise, experience, and skills is crucial to securing your desired job. Here are some top resume tips to help you create a standout document:

Top Resume Tips for Makeup Artists

  • Keep it concise: Your makeup artist resume should be no longer than two pages. Be selective about the information you include and make sure it’s relevant to the role you’re applying for.
  • Use keywords: Many companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to scan resumes for keywords relevant to the role. Research the job description and include relevant keywords throughout your resume.
  • Showcase your creativity: Your resume should reflect your artistic abilities. Be bold, colorful, and creative in your formatting and use images if appropriate.
  • Use bullet points: Make your resume easy to read by using bullet points and concise, specific language.
  • Include relevant experience: Include both paid and volunteer experience in the makeup industry, highlighting your skills and specific achievements.

Understanding the Makeup Artist Role

Before you begin crafting your resume, it’s important to have a clear understanding of the role of a makeup artist. While the specific responsibilities may vary depending on the industry or company, the core duties generally involve enhancing the appearance of individuals using makeup techniques.

Researching the Job You Are Applying For

To create a targeted and effective resume, it’s imperative that you research the job you’re applying for. Look at the company’s website, social media presence, and reviews. Consider the company’s mission, values, and culture to create a personal statement or objective section that aligns with their goals.

Showcasing Your Skills

Your resume should highlight your skills and strengths as a makeup artist. This may include experience with various makeup techniques, knowledge of current beauty trends, and proficiency in industry-specific tools and software. Use your resume to showcase your unique talents and demonstrate your ability to meet the needs of the role.

Highlighting Professional Experience

Your professional experience section should provide an overview of your work history in the makeup industry. Use bullet points to highlight key achievements and responsibilities, and provide specific examples of projects you have completed. Be sure to tailor your experience section to each job you apply for, emphasizing the most relevant and impressive achievements.

A strong makeup artist resume should be concise, creative, and targeted to the role you’re applying for. By showcasing your skills, experience, and understanding of the industry, you’ll be well on your way to securing your dream job.

Structure & Format of Your Makeup Artist Resume

When it comes to creating a makeup artist resume, there are a few key considerations to keep in mind in terms of structure and format. Here’s what you need to know:

Choosing the Right Resume Format

The format you choose for your makeup artist resume can have a significant impact on how well it performs in the job market. There are a few different options to choose from, including chronological, functional, and hybrid formats.

A chronological format highlights your professional experience and employment history, while a functional format focuses more on your skills and abilities. A hybrid format blends aspects of both, and can be a good choice if you have a diverse range of skills and experiences to showcase.

Ultimately, the format you choose should be tailored to your unique strengths and the demands of the job you’re applying for.

Understanding the Importance of the First Impression

When it comes to crafting a successful makeup artist resume, first impressions matter. This means paying careful attention to the layout, design, and overall feel of your resume to ensure that it makes a strong initial impact.

Consider using bold or italicized text to draw attention to important details, and keep your formatting consistent throughout the document. Be sure to proofread carefully and use correct grammar and spelling to show that you’re a professional who pays attention to the details.

Tailoring Your Application to the Job Posting

One of the most important things you can do to increase your chances of success as a makeup artist job applicant is to tailor your resume to the specific job posting. This means reading the posting carefully to understand the company’s needs and preferences, and adjusting your application accordingly.

For example, if the posting emphasizes the importance of creative skills, be sure to highlight your own creativity and innovation on your resume. If the posting mentions specific software or tools you’re expected to use on the job, make sure you highlight your experience with these tools in your work history section.

Consideration of ATS

Finally, it’s important to consider how your resume will be reviewed by applicant tracking systems (ATS). These are software tools that many companies use to automatically filter and sort job applications based on specific criteria.

To optimize your chances of success, make sure your makeup artist resume includes relevant keywords and phrases that match the job posting. Be sure to use a standard font and formatting, as these can impact the readability of your resume in an ATS.

By focusing on structure, format, and customization, you can create a strong, effective makeup artist resume that helps you stand out in a competitive job market.

Makeup Artist Resume Sample Sections

When it comes to crafting a stellar makeup artist resume, it’s important to divide your relevant experiences into clear sections. Here are some key sections to include on your resume:

Objective Statement

Your objective statement should be a brief statement of your career goals and aspirations. It should be customized to fit the position you’re applying for and show how you can add value to the company.

For example, a strong objective statement may read: “Experienced makeup artist seeking a role in editorial and fashion industries to utilize my creative talents and passion for beauty, while contributing to a team atmosphere.”

Professional Summary Statement

Similarly, your professional summary statement should give an overview of your expertise and highlight your key accomplishments. This section should showcase your unique talents and skillset and can be longer than the objective statement.

For example, a great professional summary statement may include: “With 10 years of experience in the beauty industry, I have a proven track record of creating flawless looks for editorial and runway events. I have expertise in both natural and dramatic makeup looks and am adept at collaborating with photographers and creative directors to ensure the vision is executed flawlessly.”

Education/Certification

In this section, highlight your formal education and certifications related to the beauty industry. This may include degrees, diplomas, certifications, and license information.

For example, you may list:

  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Makeup Design from XYZ University
  • Certified Makeup Artist from ABC Beauty School
  • Licensed Esthetician from the State Board of Cosmetology

Work Experience

This section should list your relevant work experience and accomplishments. Be sure to list your experiences in reverse chronological order and emphasize your achievements and key responsibilities.

For example, you may include:

  • Lead Makeup Artist for XYZ Fashion Week, responsible for creating 25 looks for multiple designers and coordinating with creative directors.
  • Assistant Makeup Artist for ABC Magazine’s Fall Editorial, responsible for assisting in creating 5 unique beauty looks and collaborating with the photography team.
  • Freelance Makeup Artist for various weddings and special events, consistently receiving positive client feedback and building a loyal customer base.

Skills & Abilities

In this section, list your technical skills, industry-specific knowledge, and other abilities that make you an exceptional candidate. This may include proficiency in different makeup techniques, familiarity with industry software or tools, and excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Proficient in airbrush makeup and special effects makeup techniques
  • Knowledgeable about current beauty trends and industry developments
  • Skilled in using Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for makeup designs and storyboarding
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, able to work well with clients, photographers, and other team members.

Awards and Achievements

Finally, list any relevant accolades, recognition, or achievements you’ve received in the beauty industry. This section can help demonstrate your expertise and commitment to your craft.

Pro Tips to Improve Your Makeup Artist Resume

As a makeup artist, your resume should showcase your unique skills and experiences to potential clients and employers. Here are some tips to help you avoid common mistakes, include creative elements, and emphasize the importance of networking on your makeup artist resume.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

First and foremost, it’s essential to proofread your resume and ensure that it’s free of any spelling or grammatical errors. Additionally, avoid using too much industry-specific jargon that may not be familiar to everyone. Instead, keep your language clear and concise to ensure that your resume is easy to read and understand.

Another common mistake is submitting a generic resume that doesn’t speak to your specific qualifications and skillset. Instead, tailor your resume to the job description you’re applying for and highlight your relevant experiences and qualifications.

Finally, be sure to quantify your accomplishments whenever possible. For example, instead of saying that you “worked on a film set,” say that you “provided makeup services for a cast of 30 actors on a major motion picture.”

Including Creative Elements

While your resume should be professional, you can still include creative elements that showcase your skills and personality. For example, you might include a headshot that shows off your makeup skills or add a touch of color to your resume to make it stand out.

Additionally, consider including a portfolio of your work, either in the form of a link or a set of images. This can help potential clients and employers get a better sense of your skills and style and give them a reason to consider you over other candidates.

Importance of Networking

Finally, as a makeup artist, networking is crucial to your success. Make sure to mention any industry-specific networking events or groups you’re involved in, as well as any high-profile clients you’ve worked with.

Additionally, consider including a section on your resume that highlights your social media presence. This might include links to your Instagram page or website, where potential clients and employers can view your work and get a sense of your personality.

By avoiding common mistakes, including creative elements, and emphasizing the importance of networking, you can create a makeup artist resume that stands out and showcases your unique qualifications and experience.

Cover Letter for Your Makeup Artist Resume

As a makeup artist, your cover letter is just as important as your resume. It serves as the introduction to your potential employer and should capture their attention while highlighting your skills and experiences.

Crafting your Cover Letter

When crafting your cover letter, it’s important to keep in mind the job requirements and qualifications. Start with a strong opening statement that highlights your interest in the position and why you are a good fit. Make sure to mention any relevant experience or education that you have in the field.

Next, highlight any specific makeup techniques or skills that you are proficient in. This could include anything from special effects makeup to bridal makeup. Make sure to include any certifications or specialized training you may have received.

In the closing paragraph, make sure to express your enthusiasm for the position and your willingness to learn and grow in your role.

Importance of Including Relevant Soft Skills

In addition to your technical skills, it’s also important to include relevant soft skills in your cover letter. Soft skills are personal attributes that are essential for success in any job. As a makeup artist, some important soft skills to highlight include:

  • Communication skills: Your ability to communicate effectively with clients and coworkers is key in the makeup industry.
  • Attention to detail: As a makeup artist, precision and attention to detail are essential in achieving the desired look for your client.
  • Creativity: Your ability to think creatively is highly desirable in the makeup industry as clients often come to you with unique requests.
  • Flexibility: The ability to adapt and be flexible in a fast-paced and ever-changing industry is essential to success as a makeup artist.

Including these soft skills in your cover letter will show potential employers that you are not only skilled in your trade but also possess the personal attributes necessary for success in the industry.

Add Value to the Cover Letter

In addition to highlighting your skills, experiences, and soft skills, it’s important to add value to your cover letter. This could include mentioning any relevant industry experience, such as working at a popular makeup store or involvement in a makeup artistry community.

You could also highlight any volunteer or charity work you may have done, as this shows your dedication to the craft and gives a glimpse into your personal values.

Lastly, make sure to tailor your cover letter to the specific job you are applying for. Use keywords from the job description and highlight how your skills and experiences align with the job requirements.

By following these tips, your cover letter will not only showcase your skills and experiences but also demonstrate your passion and dedication to the makeup industry.

What does a makeup artist do?

Makeup artists are exactly that —  artists . You use a variety of cosmetics and makeup to create different looks for your clients. Of course, there’s a wide range of opportunities. You may find yourself dabbling in theatrical makeup, wedding makeup, or everyday looks.

The day-to-day life of a professional makeup artist is highly varied. The work you will find yourself doing depends largely on the type of makeup artist you are. However, here are some common tasks that you may have to undertake:

  • Promoting your makeup artist services to a wide range of clients
  • Communicating with clients and ascertaining what they need
  • Reading briefs or scripts to understand what a certain look demands of you
  • Creating brief sketches and designs to show clients before getting to work
  • Getting to know new cosmetics and products when they hit the market
  • Liaising with beauticians, hair stylists, and a wider creative team
  • Taking all of the proper precautions when it comes to beauty products
  • Showcasing an understanding of the photographic process and its needs
  • Using special effects makeup to create theatrical looks for your clients
  • Creating a budget and sourcing all of the products that you need
  • Working quickly in high-pressure environments, such as backstage
  • Collaborating with hairdressers to create looks or undertaking hairdressing
  • Understanding how long a specific project will take and scheduling well
  • Keeping tight accounts, paying invoices, and invoicing clients

Now, it’s worth noting that there are many different types of makeup artists out there. However, the tasks we have outlined above may cross over into many of the job roles. Before you take the leap and launch your career, ensure you are well-versed in the duties.

How much do makeup artists make?

Before you dedicate yourself to a career as a makeup artist, you need to know what kind of money you will make. This is a highly technical job and the salary reflects that!

We have the answer. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics , the mean wage for makeup artists, theatrical and performance workers is $93,850 per year. When we break that down into an hourly wage, you can expect around $45.12.

Of course, how much you make will depend on a wide range of factors including the industry in which you work, your skill level, and your education.

There’s a wide range of salaries here. The top 10% of makeup artists take home around $170,860 each year, while the bottom 10% can expect around $37,440.

Think you have what it takes to go solo? If you’re a professional makeup artist, you may decide to become self-employed. If you choose to become freelance, you can dictate your own time and rates. However, you will have to keep on top of your taxes too. Luckily, Keeper Tax has a complete guide to paying taxes for makeup artists that you can use.

Ready to dip your toes into the world of makeup artistry? To give you the inspiration that you need, you might want to take a look at the job outlook. The good news is that the future is relatively bright for budding young creatives who want to make their name here.

While not a whole lot has changed in the last decade, there has been a slow boost in jobs . The number of makeup artist vacancies in the US has grown by over 162% in that period. The sector is expanding. There has also been an average growth of just over 10% per year.

If you’re thinking that now is the time to shoot your shot, you may well be right. New roles are rearing their ugly heads all of the time — ready for you to make up with the latest cosmetics. The report suggests that there will be roughly 2,420 new jobs filled by 2029.

What industry do makeup artists work in?

If you are thinking of becoming a makeup artist, there are many career paths for you. The truth is that a variety of sectors have a demand for makeup artists.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that makeup artists, theatrical and performance workers mainly find permanent positions in the following sectors:

  • Motion Picture and Video Industries
  • Amusement Parks and Arcades
  • Radio and Television Broadcasting Stations
  • Performing Arts Companies
  • Media Streaming Distribution Services, Social Networks, and Other Media Networks and Content Providers

Of course, it’s worth noting that the above list of industries includes theatrical and performance workers. For that reason, they may be more wide-spanning than the sectors you plan to look for roles in. Still, it’s worth keeping your eyes peeled!

Landing your next makeup artist job may well depend on the state in which you live. The states with the highest employment level among makeup artists, and theatrical and performance workers are California, Florida, New York, the District of Columbia, and Illinois.

If you’re struggling to find a job, it may be worth thinking outside of the box. Consider alternative industries in which you could work. For example, makeup artists can find work for magazines or publications, in beauty salons, at funeral parlors, and even online. The more potential avenues you delve into, the more likely you are to find a job that suits you.

Who are the most influential makeup artists?

Being a makeup artist isn’t just about knowing which mascara to use. If you play your cards right, you can become a famous influencer and have the bank balance to prove it.

Looking for inspiration? Let’s take a look at some success stories. According to the 2022 Beauty Influencer Rich List, here are the top three beauty influencers of last year:

1. Safiya Nygaard

With a combined social earning of $196,877 and almost 10 million YouTube followers, Safiya Nygaard takes the number one spot. The social media star is known for covering beauty and lifestyle topics and also started the series LadyLike on Buzzfeed.

2. Huda Kattan

The more you practice your art and get your name out there, the more likely you are to get noticed by all of the right people. No matter where you are starting from, you can be sure that there are plenty of ways to make it big.

How to write a makeup artist resume

Before you start writing your makeup artist resume, you’re going to need a plan. Rather than throwing everything onto a page and hoping for the best, it’s important to follow a structure. With that in mind, your CV should contain the following elements:

  • The resume header
  • The resume summary (aka profile or personal statement)
  • The employment history section
  • The resume skills section
  • The education section

Using the above format means that your resume will tick all of the recruiter’s boxes. It is the structure that they expect to see and you don’t want to give them any nasty shocks. Later in this guide, we will cover the content you need to include in each of the sections.

It should come as no surprise that there’s an art to creating an engaging resume. While your portfolio will do a lot of the work here, you need to ensure that your resume supports it properly. If you’re completely new to applying for jobs, don’t panic. We’ve got you here covered with some of the most effective tips to use when writing your application.

The tone of your resume shouldn’t be too formal or too personal. No, you need to take a leaf out of Goldilocks’ book and get it just right. As a makeup artist, you need to be a people person since you work closely with clients. However, keep in mind that this is a professional role. When you’re writing your resume, you will need to find a balance.

If you’re using a one-size-fits-all approach to applying for jobs, this is your sign to stop. You will increase your chances of success by tailoring each resume to the company at hand. Before you apply for a specific role, do some research. Learn as much as you can about the business or agency to which you’re applying and make changes accordingly.

Want to beat the bots? Many recruiters now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to rank incoming resumes. The software determines how well your application fits the criteria of the position. Including the right keywords on your resume is a shortcut to success. Look at the job advert and pick out words and phrases. By ensuring your language matches that of the hiring manager, you boost your chance of landing that all-important interview.

Choosing the best resume format for a makeup artist

For most makeup artist resumes, you can use the standard reverse chronological format. That means that your most recent qualifications, training, and education sit at the top of each section. As you work your way downward, you travel back in time. Recruiters are used to this structure as it allows them to quickly determine what experience you have.

However, if you want to emphasize your artistic abilities rather than your experience, there is another way to go. A functional resume format highlights your skills over the work you have previously completed. So, should you be new to the sector, you can show off the talents you have. Read more about what structure to choose in our complete guide here.

The resume header is right at the top of the page. It is a chance to visually set yourself apart from the competition. This section includes your contact details so that a recruiter can get in touch. Make sure that your information is easy to read. You can afford to be creative with this part of your resume — add a splash of color or a cool design.

Resume summary example

Next up, you need to write your resume summary. Also known as a personal statement, this is a 3-4 line bio about you as a professional. You don’t need to write an entire memoir about why you became a makeup artist. Instead, include your top achievements.

Struggling to know what to write? Here’s an exercise you can try. Imagine that you’re in an elevator with Jennifer Lopez’ tour manager. It’s your only chance to win him over and become the singer’s new MUA. You have a matter of seconds to “wow” him and explain why you’re a star-worthy professional. What would you say? Get that down on paper now.

Experienced makeup artist with keen eye for color and ability to select shades that complement customer skin tone. Utilize cutting-edge techniques and tools to create a sophisticated, airbrushed look. Personable and engaging, committed to listening to customers to understand desired looks and preferences.

Employment history sample

As a makeup artist, you may well be self-employed. Many professionals in this circle move from gig to gig… project to project. If that is the case, pick out your three-to-four most recent projects and lay them out as you would jobs. If, on the other hand, you are in full-time employment, you can use a standard structure for this part of your resume.

You should use the reverse chronological order for this part of your resume. In each case, you need to include the company or client, the dates of employment, and the location. Beneath that information, you can add bullet points that emphasize your achievements.

  • Remain breast of current industry trends, incorporate new techniques, and select high-quality products.

  • Created cohesive looks for bridal parties and other groups, including coordinating with stylists handling hair and nails.
  • Apprenticed with senior makeup artist to develop hands-on knowledge of best practices.

CV skills example

Makeup artists need a varied selection of skills on their professional CVs. Sure, there are the technical skills — such as product knowledge, dexterity, and specific looks, like wedding makeup. However, since this is a people-facing role, you will also need a load of soft or interpersonal skills too. We’re talking about communication and collaboration. When deciding what CV skills you want to include in this list, make sure you include both.

  • Color Theory
  • Makeup Application
  • Skin Tone Matching
  • Airbrushing
  • Brow Shaping
  • Bridal Parties
  • Proms & Dances

Makeup artist resume education example

Most of the time, you don’t need a degree to become a makeup artist. However, if you have one in a related subject, you should include it on your resume. Feature any makeup artist-specific training you have had in this section. For example, if you trained under a professional or at an academy, you need to shout about it in this part of your resume.

Once again, you should use the reverse chronological order. Put the qualifications that you have gained the most recently at the top of the page and work your way backward.

This makes it extremely impossible for the manager to decide who to hire, so that’s why a good summary section on top of your resume helps them make a final decision.

A perfect summary should be succinct and precise which means short and not vague. An example might be:

Passionate Makeup Artist with 5+ years of experience and proven skills in sales and product knowledge. Seeking to double sales for Mods Salon. Built recurring client base by understanding every client’s unique requests, working together with them and increased positive customer comments by 36%. Increased profits more than $100,000 for the management by upselling various skincare products.

If you think you don’t have experience as a makeup artist, you can use your other experiences to prove your potential.

Energetic Makeup Artist with 3K+ Instagram followers and 10+ regular clients, skilled in personal makeup and responding to customer needs. As a member at theatre company, facilitated with regular makeup. Received 95% positive feedback from management for punctuality, creativity, and flexibility.

  • Makeup Artist Resume - Work Experience Description Section

Follow these steps to write the perfect work experience description:

  • Not more than 5 bullet Points
  • Use action words with results

A beginner’s example is as follows:

__ Freelance Makeup Artist New York, NY – 2017- Present

  • Freelance makeup artist with 15+ regular clients.
  • Handled instagram and youtube accounts with more than 2k+ active followers.
  • Filled in as makeup artist at Habib’s Salon 2x per month.
  • Handled makeup for 5 weddings for bride and all bridesmaids with overwhelmingly positive feedback.

An experienced make-up artist example would be as follows:

Makeup Artist – Sassoon Hair Salon New York, NY – 2014-2019

  • Sold $5K+ per week of proprietary products.
  • Rated 4.5/5 on StyleSeat and Makeup + Me blog.
  • Trained 5 makeup advisors.
  • Performed 30+ client assessments and makeup applications per week.
  • Makeup Artist Resume - Education Section

  • Excelled in beauty make-up and bookkeeping coursework.
  • Pursued a passion for client assessment and skin care specialist.
  • Commended by the Dean on interpersonal skills.
  • Makeup Artist Resume Skills

You know you’ve got the skills required and your experience shows it, so why have a skills section? Well, it’s important because it shows if you’ve got the right skills for this specific job.

The best advice would be add skills already mentioned in the job description you’re applying to. But here are a few examples:

MakeupCollaboartion
WaxingInterpersonal Skills
Skin CareCommunication
Facial TreatmentCustomer Service
SalesListening
Booking AppointmentsCreative Thinking
RetailDetail Oriented

  • Makeup Artist Resume - Certification or Licence Section

Certain states or provinces have requirements for beauty professionals to have licences. So check for your state or countries requirements and then work towards or if you already have, add those licences. An example of how to add licence would be:

  • Licensed Cosmetologist, New York State
  • Licensed Nail Technician
  • Interests or Other Things Required

To show that you’re career driven and really want to become the best in your field, it’s nice to add things that you do outside work and school that lead you towards your goal.

Some examples might be:

Social Media

  • Instagram: 3,623 Followers
  • Youtube: 2,410 Followers
  • Member, Professional Beauty Association.
  • Regular listener, This Week in Makeup podcast.
  • Teach yoga classes 2x per week for fun & fitness.

Networking Events

  • Women in Leadership, Gave presentation on looking professional.

Resume Objective & Resume Summary

A typical cosmetic resume will include a makeup artist resume objective or summary. The role of a summary or objective is to show your skills and experience concisely or represent your need for training respectively. While a resume summary is a perfect option for showcasing your accomplishments and talents, makeup artist resume objectives are great for telling the reader about your job demands.

Additionally, a typical summary is longer than an objective. While a summary is more descriptive in nature, an objective is more straightforward.

Resume Summary [Examples]

Professionally written make up resumes always contain a Summary section. To stand out in the job market, showcase your skills and work experience in a short Summary.

To find a job in the cosmetics industry

A highly creative and self-organized makeup artist with 3 years of cosmetology experience. Due to superb artistic vision, strong knowledge of cosmetological procedures, and makeup application techniques achieved a 96% client satisfaction rate and increased customer retention by 43%.

Resume Objective [Examples]

A traditional makeup artist objective is a statement of your personal job demands when it comes to job duties, salary, or responsibilities. Check a well-written and badly composed objective in a resume example below.

To find a job as a makeup artist in local salons (New York and Metropolitan area). Open for hire for gigs and fashion shows on a freelance basis. Preferences for salons cooperating with L’Oreal, Dior, or Estee Lauder

Resume Examples [Experience]

The Experience section in your make up resume is one of the core sections in all makeup artist resumes that give a recruiter a reason to hire you among other job seekers. How to write this section properly?

  • Type of business . Mention whether you’ve worked as a freelance makeup artist or for a traditional salon;
  • Job responsibilities . List all the job duties you had as a makeup artist;
  • Mention the products you used for your work . Different salons specialize in different product types in their niche. Some will prefer Dior, while others will be L’Oreal-focused;
  • Structure . Keep the information organized, preferably in lists.

Entry Level Makeup Artist Resume [Experience]

How to let your beginner makeup artist resume shine if there is not much to add to your Experience section?

  • Never leave the Experience section empty. This is a place to give a reason to a hiring manager to hire you;
  • Portfolio . Add a portfolio that contains photos of your projects to your make up artist resume;
  • List job-related responsibilities . Do you know how to organize and handle appointments professionally because it was a part of your last job? Mention it!

How to Put Education on a Resume

The most popular educational institution mentioned in makeup resumes is a cosmetology school. There are no strict requirements for composing this section. The main suggestions for the creation of a sample makeup artist resume are structure and organization. Other tips to follow are:

  • Mention the name of the makeup courses or the cosmetology school you’ve graduated from;
  • Mention the years of studying and the graduation date;
  • List your qualifications. For instance, you’ve studied makeup art and hairdressing - list the data in your resume.

Makeup Artist Resume Examples [Education]

When creating a sample makeup artist resume, keep the Education section well-structured and real. Don’t mention the school or courses you’ve never attended. Don’t harm your career! Regardless of your education, a typical employer will focus on your skills and portfolio rather than your college education before inviting you for job interviews.

I graduated from Denver Cosmetology School recently. My specialization is Theatrical Makeup

Salon Success Academy

  • Studied Visual Art and Makeup
  • Completed internship at Denver Central Theater

Skills on a Resume for a Makeup Artist

Your makeup artist skills won’t focus solely on your technical skills like makeup application or color palette knowledge. All because the career field of a typical makeup artist implies working with people. You won’t practice makeup on mannequins for the rest of your life, right? Hence, it’s preferable your makeup artist skills resume includes non-technical skills like communication as well.

  • Start with Hard Skills like ‘strong knowledge of brands and products’ and follow with Soft Skills like ‘stress resistance’;
  • Divide your Skills section into Hard Skills and Soft Skills subsections to emphasize your technical and non-technical skills to the hiring manager;
  • Present yourself from different angles. For instance, emphasize your theoretical knowledge and practical skills to prove your proficiency as a makeup professional.

Makeup Artist Resume Examples [Skills]

How to be a good makeup artist? The answer is simple - start with developing your skills and meeting individuals that can inspire you and share some knowledge. Meanwhile, make sure to present the skills that salon occupations require in a perfect structure and organization.

Strong industry knowledge, superb knowledge of makeup application techniques, etc.

  • Authentic visual conceptualization and imagination
  • Strong industry knowledge
  • Superb knowledge of color palettes and makeup application techniques
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Communication
  • Stress resistance

How to Stand Out at the Job Market

To brighten up your makeup resume and maximize your chances of winning a job interview, add Other Sections at the end of your resume. Think of Other Sections as statements for your amazing personality and job-related interests. In other words, Other Sections are the last chance to persuade a hiring manager to recruit if they have doubts.

Other Sections to add to your resume for beauty industry are as follows:

  • Other Projects;
  • Volunteering;
  • Awards and Certifications.

Makeup Artist Resume Examples [Other Sections]

When composing Other Sections for your professional makeup artist resume, make sure the data you use is completely job-related. For instance, there is no need to mention your hobbies in your makeup artist sample resume that are not about applying makeup or learning more about the beauty industry. Also, if you scan the job market, you’ll find that Other Sections aren’t as long as the Experience or Skills sections.

  • Writing about IT and technology
  • Reading about cinema
  • Writing a ‘Visual Recognition’ blog on makeup and beauty
  • Supporting the work of other makeup artists through volunteering and charity activities

Makeup Artist Resume Keywords

What are professional keywords, and why are they important in your Makeup Artist Resume? Professional keywords are terms related to a particular profession. They would be built in the algorithm of an ATS system designed to identify your skills and qualifications. At the end of the screening process, the ATS bot would accept or reject your resume.

  • List the job-related tasks you’ve performed as a makeup artist . For instance, ‘skin cleansing,’ ‘applying lipstick,’ ‘smoothing the skin texture,’ etc.;
  • Mention professional nouns . List the tools you’ve used for your work. For instance, ‘bronzer,’ ‘concealer,’ ‘eye pencil,’ etc.;
  • Add verbs . Think of actions like ‘applying,’ ‘cleansing,’ ‘removing,’ etc.

Writing down professional keywords all throughout your makeup artist resume template is a great way to persuade the recruiter that you know your job and industry requirements. In other words, it’s a great opportunity to persuade the recruiter to hire you and start a new breathtaking career.

Final Thoughts

Writing makeup artist resumes is not as tough as it sounds once you’re equipped with the necessary knowledge. Check as many makeup resumes examples as you can before composing a resume for yourself.

  • Make sure the make up artist resume examples you find are composed by professional writers;
  • Get an advantage in the job hunting process by adding professional keywords;
  • Alter your resume according to different job position requirements;
  • Provide perfect structure to your resume sections so a recruiter can quickly familiarize themselves with your makeup artist bio and other data;
  • Keep the data real - don’t make up (pun intended) your education if you don’t have one.

Here, I have shared some useful tips and tricks to become a makeup artist through this blog. So, come check it out!

Steps to Become a Makeup Artist

Here we go, The following is the proper step-by-step guidance to become a makeup artist. Check these points to learn more about it

#1. Learn  Basic Makeup Techniques

Learn  Basic Makeup Techniques

Before you start applying makeup on others, you should have basic knowledge. Do you know the difference between contouring and highlighting? Can you make a perfect winged eyeliner? These are some of the fundamental skills you should know. And if you face challenges in this field, it’s okay; we’ve all been there! starting is always difficult.

But remember, practice makes everything perfect.  Start by yourself.  Choose any online makeup video and start practicing. Try different looks, such as natural day makeup, and glam makeup. But don’t forget about skin cleansing before you apply makeup for a good base. The more you practice, the easier it will be for you to learn new looks.

#2. Get Professional Training

I am not saying, that YouTube tutorials are not good, Indeed, they are great for beginners. But nothing beats professional training. Get yourself enrolled in a reputable makeup course. Many makeup beauty schools offer complete, detailed makeup programs. They cover everything from teaching simple color theory to makeup perfection on different skin types.

Always choose a course that provides you with practical experience. After all, there is a big difference between applying makeup and working on different faces and skin tones. Plus, these professionals teach you lessons on proper hygiene and safety. Though you spend some time in these courses, trust me, you will learn the skills to become a makeup artist.

#3. Earn Cosmetology Degree

Now, you may think” Do I really need a degree to apply makeup”? Well, yes definitely! Because you need a proper legal license to work in a salon or to start your own business. This cosmetology degree doesn’t teach you about makeup but you will know about skincare, skin prep, etc. That means it gives you a bonus point to grow in your career.

#4. Keep Yourself Updated With New Makeup Trends

Remember, when thin eyebrows were in super trend in the late ’90s? Or when people were totally obsessed with shimmery eyeshadow? This shows that the makeup industry changes according to time. And so do you have to!

Keep yourself updated with new makeup trends, and techniques. Follow beauty influencers, subscribe to industry magazines, and read them, or attend trade shows. But there’s one important thing you must remember. Don’t copy those trends blindly! Make your version. Learn different styles, techniques, and adaptability. Your clients will appreciate it!

#5. Create an Inspiring Portfolio

Think of your portfolio as your virtual resume. It is the best chance to show off your skills and creativity. But how do you create an inspiring portfolio when you are a fresher?

Don’t worry, I will tell you!  Practice different looks on your friends and family. You can create special effects makeup on Halloween , try different bridal looks, etc. Capture your outstanding work with a good-quality camera and, if possible, collaborate with professional photographers. They will give you time for print shoots. Remember, quantity is always above quantity. Add only your stunning makeup looks to your portfolio rather than dozens of mediocre ones.

#6. Increase Networking and Market Your Work

Your network is your net worth in the beauty industry. After making your portfolio, it is time to build good professional connections. Attend industry events, connect with other makeup artists, and don’t forget to promote your work.

Social media is your best buddy here! Create a business Instagram account and post your best work. Share behind-the-scenes glimpses, tutorials,  and personal tips, or mistakes to avoid. Who knows? Your next big clients may discover you through a hashtag and you get the best opportunity of your life!

#7. Get Work Experience

Experience is what matters in the beauty industry. Find professional makeup artists and assist them. It is a great way to learn new skills, treat different clients, and understand more about the beauty industry’s needs.  Look for growth opportunities to get experience at local salons, cosmetic stores, or even theaters. Remember, this is the biggest chance to identify your mistakes and work on improving them.

#8. Build a Professional Website

Build a Professional Website

We are in the digital age where you must have a professional website. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a complete technological developer to build one.  Go for user-friendly platforms to build your website.

Your website should show your portfolio , your service menu, and your contact information. Remember, this is the first thing your customers will notice about your business so make sure it is attractive and catchy.

#9. Start Your Own Business

So, Ready to be your boss now? Yes, I know it feels exciting, and fun. But but! This journey comes with several challenges along the way. You have to prepare yourself for both. Do deep research about the services and products in demand. Ask yourself questions like, “What niche do I want at my business?” and Whether I use eco-friendly or vegan products?”

#10. Offer Excellent Makeup Services

No doubt your skills are important, but so are your services. Are you punctual? Do you listen to your clients? Do you take care of proper cleanliness and hygienic environment? These are the basic factors to become a makeup artist in the beauty industry.

If you offer a good customer experience, they will recommend you to their friends and family. This increases your client base and promotes your business.

#11. Simplify Bookings and Manage Client Efficiently

You can use Salonist salon management software for this. It provides an online appointment booking option. It allows customers to book appointments online from  Android or IOS mobile devices.

Salonist also sends automatic booking reminders to customers a few days before the actual date. These reminders are sent through emails or text messages. This improves clients’ experience and reduces no-shows.

No matter how fast your business is growing,. Continuous learning opens thousands of doors for your business’s growth.  Attend workshops, watch online master classes, and seminars, and practice regularly. The more versatile you are, the more customers will value you.
