Doctoral Studies

Are you interested in research? Do you want to contribute to the scientific knowledge in the field of odontology?

Doctoral studies lay the ground for a further career in research and teaching at the university. The Institute of odontology at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, is ranked as one of the leading institutes of odontology in the world. Both preclinical and clinical research is conducted at the institute.

The purpose of doctoral studies is to give the students in-depth subject knowledge, skills in research methodology and experience of research.

As a doctoral student you are included in a research group at the institute, and you conduct your doctoral project under supervision. The programme of studies for a doctoral degree also includes doctoral courses, and participation in seminars and scientific conferences. Doctoral studies comprise 240 credits and leads to a doctoral degree. As an alternative doctoral studies may be finalised as a licentiate degree of 120 credits.

There are about 50 doctoral students at the Institute of odontology, with doctoral projects in the subjects available:

  • Behavioral and Community Dentistry
  • Endodontics
  • Oral Biochemistry
  • Oral Medicine and Pathology
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
  • Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
  • Oral Microbiology and Immunology
  • Orofacial Pain
  • Orthodontics
  • Pediatric Dentistry
  • Prosthodontics/Dental Materials Science
  • Periodontology

The doctoral studies are coordinated by the faculty of health and medicine; Sahlgrenska Academy.

There are two paths to doctoral education at Sahlgrenska Academy. One is to apply, competing with other applicants, for a position as a doctoral student. In this case, the University of Gothenburg is the employer. Alternatively, you can be admitted to study for a doctoral degree while holding another position, with an employer other than the University.

Farhan Bazargani is the director of doctoral studies at the institute.

Education programmes

At the Faculty of Odontology (often called " Tandvårdshögskolan "), you can study to become a dentist, dental hygienist or dental technician. Each professional role contributes with unique competence to the dental care team and the interaction between the professional groups is emphasised in the training courses.

Challenge-based learning and the Malmö model

In our courses, a pedagogical model called challenge-based learning ( utmaningsbaserat lärande – UBL ) is used. It means that the student themself, to a large extent, takes responsibility for finding knowledge to be able to solve problems that may arise in professional life.

This also means that the students in the dental training and dental hygienist training early on in the training treat patients in the University Dental Clinic. The dental technicians participate in the corresponding way in work-based practical studies at external laboratories.

Our programmes are taught in Swedish

Our undergraduate programmes are entirely taught in Swedish. One of the entry requirements is proficiency in Swedish, equivalent to the level of the Swedish upper secondary school course “Swedish 3” ( Svenska 3/Svenska som andraspråk 3 ).

The international master's programme in Dental Science at Malmö University offers international dental professionals the opportunity to carry out qualified studies at the Faculty of Odontology, leading to a Master of Dental Science (MDSc) degree (120 higher education credits, compatible with ECTS). The programme is offered only as commissioned education.

We are currently not offering a Master’s programme in Dental Science.

Research at the faculty spans a broad spectrum: from molecular biological studies of oral tissues to wide-ranging studies of oral health among different generations, social classes and cultures. International collaboration is a common theme, and there is frequent research co-operation across disciplinary boundaries.

Researchers at the Faculty of Odontology collaborate across subject and faculty boundaries. Together with surface chemists, for example, they study the properties of surfaces, in order to better understand reactions in the oral cavity.

To solve problems, they also rely on research findings in disciplines such as molecular biology, microbiology, radiology, implant technology, and mechanics; subjects to which they can also contribute specialist knowledge of their own.

Collaboration with psychologists, educators, and sociologists gives substance to research dealing with oral health problems associated with people's behaviour and with social and economic factors.

Join the SCON research projects

Scandinavian Center for Orofacial Neurosciences (SCON) are seeking partners for six research projects in oral medicine, orofacial pain and prosthodontics. The funding partners can contribute researchers who also will have the possibility to apply and be admitted to the full PhD programme at the University.

In 2014, management from the Department of Dental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Faculty of Odontology, from Malmö University Department of Dentistry, and from Aarhus University, signed a formal memorandum of agreement to establish the Scandinavian Center for Orofacial Neurosciences (SCON).

The overall idea behind SCON is to bring together in a brickless center (as a virtual network) leading Scandinavian groups in the field of orofacial neurosciences — including oral physiology and orofacial pain — in order to strengthen research activities and impact on education and clinical treatment in oral rehabilitation, for the benefit of patients and society.

The SCON partners have common research interests and master several overlapping techniques in addition to unique complementary expertise. The combined portfolio of techniques and experiences span from molecular biology, genotyping, advanced electrophysiology, quantitative sensory test, to randomised clinical trials, epidemiology and evaluation of cognitive and psychosocial function. Through SCON, the partners aim to provide cutting-edge research results and to constitute an attractive alternative to other major international centres in the field by recruiting the best young research talents and securing external funding.

The research projects

All research projects are related to orofacial neurosciences in a broad sense and with a particular focus on oral medicine, orofacial pain and oral function. Each research project is composed of three to four separate studies leading to three to four publications in international peer-reviewed journals. A strength for all projects will be the significant interaction between the SCON partners and the possibility to conduct a sub-part of the research project at another SCON site. Further details about the projects can be found here .

Our partnership

Our funding partners within the research programme will be able to assist with researchers who can carry out parts of the research. The researchers will also have the possibility to apply for the full PhD programme at the Universities. Read more about this opportunity here .

Course content

The two-year Master's degree program "Periodontology and Implantology" offers licensed dentists the opportunity to expand and deepen their specialist knowledge and practical skills in the field of periodontology and implant therapy.

The curriculum is based on the latest findings in periodontology and implantology and places particular emphasis on systematic and evidence-based treatment planning as well as practical training in minimally invasive and microsurgical techniques.

Prosthetic planning and treatment in an interdisciplinary working environment is an integral part of the curriculum. The use of implants in periodontally diseased teeth is an important treatment option. The management of peri-implant diseases is therefore a key focus of the curriculum.

The overarching aim is to expand the skills and abilities in the entire spectrum of periodontology and implantology and to successfully carry out complex interdisciplinary treatments.

Master-after-Master in Periodontology and clinical post-graduate, KU Leuven

This program is a program that is based on scientific evidence but forces the participants to critical thinking. The main focus is clinical. Students will spent at least 70% of their time on patient treatment. The large population of patients and highly diverse staff with different focusses allows a very broad array of possible treatments that can be offered to the student. The program covers both implant dentistry and periodontics. Additionally, 5 key opinion leaders that are invited each year for “private” courses.

Description of the theoretical and practical component

One to two half days per week are dedicated towards theoretical training in periodontology and implant dentistry. This is done partially via interactive seminars organized within the department of periodontology, but also by other departments of the School of Dentistry (Orthodontics, Restorative Dentistry, Oral Radiology, Anatomy, Statistics, ....). The department also invites ± 5 key-opinion leaders per year, who are teaching on very specific topics within periodontology, and have a “private” open discussion with the postgraduate students alone. Most seminars are preceded by self-studying. In this way the whole scope of periodontology can be covered.

Besides the development of clinical skills, the graduate must also develop a thorough understanding of the basic sciences of periodontology (anatomy, biology, function & regeneration of bone & soft tissues).

Scientific literature will be assessed according to validity and read with attention to detail.

At the end of the program students will have performed more than 120 periodontal surgeries (including muco-gingival and GTR procedures) and more than 100 implants, some of those in combination with different GBR techniques.

At the end of the 3rd year the students are required to present 8 multidisciplinary cases including a justification of the treatments as well as the procedures performed.

The 1st year students primarily focus on initial periodontal therapy, resective periodontal surgery and straightforward implant surgeries. During the 2nd year mucogingival procedures and GTR/GBR techniques are added, plus more complex implant surgeries. In the last year students will have the chance to perform more complex interventions under the guidance of an expert, and start more routine interventions with younger post graduate students (supervision on demand). Each case must be planned, discussed and approved by a supervisor. Clinical sessions are scheduled in combination with Orthodontics and Restorative Departments. Teams will be created with one post graduate student of each of these departments, working together during the 3 years of training.

Description of the research component

Postgraduate students are involved in clinical and fundamental research, leading to a publication. Depending on the field of interest, students can choose to set up a study, perform a retrospective analysis, perform a systematic review or can be involved in the studies of PhD students. Research data can be presented at congresses via poster presentation or lecture.

Language requirements

A good knowledge of the Dutch language (ILT level 5) is required. Lectures are given in Dutch. Furthermore, patient communication is of utmost importance, therefore the ILT level 5 is a strict prerequisite.
