Time for Boat Journey: The best time for a boat journey can be in the rainy season . During the rainy season, all the rivers of the country remain full to the brim and there can be no difficulty in rowing a boat. Most of the areas of the country can be reached by boat during that time. Even, during the rains, many of the parts of the country go underwater and become unsuitable for road communication.

Description of the Boat Journey: During the last rainy season I, along with three other friends, decided to have a boat journey to my sister ‘s house. My sister’s house is at Jaisthapura. Jaisthapura is on the river Karnafully and the easiest way to go there is by boat. On the appointed day we went to the Kalurghat river ghat at 7 AM. There we boarded on a passenger boat bound for Jaisthapura. There were five boatmen in the boat. It was an engine boat. There were about fifty passengers on the boat. At the appointed time the boatmen started the boat.

The boat started moving on. It was a big boat. The passengers were sitting on wooden stools on the boat. After the boat started, the passengers got engaged in different activities. Some of them were reading books, some were reading newspapers , some were chatting and some were eating fruits and nuts. We saw many boats, big and small, plying up and down the river. The views on both sides of the river were very beautiful from the boat. The wind was also refreshing. The boat touched some places on its way. People got down and boarded on the boat at those places. The journey lasted for about three hours. At 10:30 AM we reached our destination.

Destination: My sister’s house was a short distance from the place where we got down from the boat. It took us only five minutes to go there on foot. My sister was very glad to receive us.

Conclusion: We enjoyed the boat journey very much. It is one of the most pleasant experiences of my life.

Bangladesh is a land of rivers. So it is very easy to enjoy a journey by boat in this country. It is full of charms and joys. It is also a part of education. It brings us close to the natural beauty.

I had recently got an occasion to go from Dhaka to Munshiganj. My elder brother who is a doctor of Munshiganj hospital invited me many a time to pay a visit to his residence. However, a fair chance came to me during the recent summer vacation. My best friend Sumon joined me.

On the appointed day we had our bath and took our breakfast earlier. We reached the river Ghat at 7.30 AM. We found our hired boat ready. The boat was a nice one with two boatmen. We got on the boat. There were hundreds of boats big and small on the Ghat.

On that day the weather was very fine. The river was calm. The sky was cloudless and clear. The sun was visible. As a result, the morning was sunny and fresh.

After a short while, the boatmen uttered the name of Allah and the boat began to move for our destination. It was about 8.15 AM.

When the boat left behind the din and bustle of the town, I enjoyed the varied beauty of nature and other familiar scenes of the countryside. There were endless fields of paddy and wheat, woods and trees . They looked like a green valley. Men, women, and little children were bathing in the river water. Fishermen were catching fish by their nets with boats. All these provided us great amusement. Several launches passed our boat.

We were hearing the Bhatiali song on the tone of our boatmen. When we enjoyed all the charms available on the ways the boat finally stopped at Munshiganj Ghat at about 8 PM. My brother paid off the boatmen’s dues including a tip. We got down off the boat and my brother received us cordially.

Thus our journey came to an end. The beautiful and amazing boat trip won our hearts. The beauty of nature which we often miss unfurled before us that day. I shall even remember the sweet memory of the pleasant boat journey for the rest of my life.

We all make journeys. I like a journey by boat the most. So I do not miss the opportunity to travel by boat. Last monsoon, I took a boat trip with some of my friends. That was during the holidays, at the end of our first interim examination. We decided to go to Mulagul from Kanaighat. That’s why we rented a big boat. We started our journey at 7 AM. Two sailors were driving the boat. I was overwhelmed by the beautiful scenery on both sides of the river. Farmers were planting paddy in the land, fishermen were fishing in the river and children were swimming . At 10 AM we reach the destination. On the way back, it was very enjoyable to see the spectrum of sunset in the river. I will never forget this journey. I think a journey by boat is the most enjoyable way to travel.

Paragraph Writing on Journey by Boat in 200 Words

I remember vividly the first time I embarked on a boat journey. It was a sunny afternoon during a family vacation to a picturesque lake nestled amidst rolling hills. We rented a small motorboat and set out to explore the tranquil waters. As the boat gently glided across the surface, I felt a sense of freedom and exhilaration.

The scenery around us was breathtaking. Lush greenery surrounded the lake, and the water sparkled in the sunlight. Birds soared overhead, adding to the serenity of the moment. It was a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and I relished the opportunity to immerse myself in nature’s beauty.

One of the most memorable aspects of the journey was the feeling of being disconnected from the outside world. Without the distractions of phones or computers, I was able to fully appreciate the present moment and bond with my family. We laughed, shared stories, and marveled at the wonders around us.

Writing Paragraph on Journey by Boat in 250 Words

I remember vividly the serene journey I took on the backwaters of Kerala, India, one misty morning. It was during a visit to the beautiful state of Kerala, famed for its picturesque landscapes and tranquil waterways. Boarding a traditional houseboat called a ‘kettuvallam’, I embarked on a voyage through the intricate network of canals and lagoons that make up the Kerala backwaters. The journey began in Alleppey, also known as Alappuzha, often called the “Venice of the East” for its intricate waterways.

As the boat gently glided through the still waters, surrounded by lush greenery and coconut palms, I felt a sense of calm wash over me. The water mirrored the vibrant hues of the sky, creating a breathtaking panorama. Along the banks, local life unfolded—women washing clothes, children playing, and fishermen casting their nets. The sights and sounds of everyday life in the backwaters painted a vivid picture of Kerala’s vibrant culture.

Navigating through narrow canals and expansive lakes, the journey was a blend of tranquility and adventure. Occasionally, we passed by quaint villages such as Kumarakom and Kuttanad, each offering a glimpse into the rustic charm of rural Kerala. The fragrance of spices filled the air as we passed by spice plantations, a testament to Kerala’s rich agricultural heritage.

One of the highlights of the journey was witnessing a mesmerizing sunset over the water. The sky turned into a canvas of vibrant colors—shades of orange, pink, and purple merging seamlessly with the tranquil waters below. It was a moment of pure magic, etched forever in my memory.

As night fell, the houseboat docked at a serene spot, offering a perfect view of the starlit sky. I savored a delicious meal of traditional Kerala cuisine prepared by the onboard chef, while the gentle lapping of water provided the perfect soundtrack to the night.

The next morning, as we bid farewell to the tranquil backwaters of Kerala, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the unforgettable journey. It was an experience that truly captured the essence of Kerala’s natural beauty and left me longing to return someday.

Journey is always a pleasurable experience for all and I am also not an exception. I never miss the chance to go no a journey, especially if it means going on a boat ride. Since Bangladesh is a riverine country, a boat ride gives one the clearest picture of the scenic beauty of Bangladesh.

A few days ago, I made a journey by boat from Mongla to Paikgacha during my Autumn vacation. We were 6 in number and I was entrusted to hire an engine fitted boat. The boatmen were nice people. We had our breakfast early in the morning. We started off at 7:00 am. The sky was clear and the weather was sunny. The river was calm but full to the brim. The boat began to move smoothly; there were small waves on the river. We enjoyed the scenes on both sides of the river. There were green fields, paddy fields and jute fields, rows of trees which were full of flowers. These things charmed our eyes and soothed our souls. We saw many boys and girls farting and swimming in the  river. Fishermen were catching fish and the women were seen fetching water in colorful pitchers. We reached a village market at around 12 pm. The boatmen cast anchor and we got down. We bought rice, eggs and big hilsha fish and curds. The boatman kindly accented to cook the dinner. We took our meal and it was delicious. We took rest for a while and started off on our journey.

The boatman tried to reach the destination before the sunset as it was late afternoon. The sun was setting with all its glory. The setting sun reflected on the gleaming water and created an ethereal felling among us. The boat moved slowly and we reached our destination. It was dark all round.

My friend Harun, a good singer started singing patriotic song, "Gram Chara Oi Ranga Matir Path." Mamun started to play on his flute. The boatman also sang, "Mon Majhi tor Boitha Nere, Ami ar baitey Parlam na."

Essay on Journey By Boat

boat essay in english

A journey boat is always very pleasant. It has a charm of its own. Rowing a boat provides a lot of fun.

Once this summer I had opportunity to go to Mauritius for about a week. We stayed in a hotel which was within a walking distance from the sea. On the full moon day, my father hired a boat for two hours. The boat was quit spacious though not a very big one. All of us-myself, my father, mother, sister and younger brother clambered in the boat.

It was dusk. The sun had just set. The scenery was very beautiful. There were not many boats on the river. I wanted to row but my father was afraid to let me do that. The boatman came to my help. He said that he would take care that I did not cause any harm to the boat or to myself. In the end, my father agreed. Sat in the place of the boatman and had the joy of rowing for almost ten minutes. Imagine my joy of rowing for almost ten minutes. Imagine my joy and pride when I was able to row the boat and keep it on course. Of course, its speed was reduced. My brother envied me.

Soon the moon was shining brightly. The tall trees silhouetted against the sky made a beautiful seens. The lights of the nearby houses and of the bridge threw beams of silver in the river. The sky was studded with stars. The scenery was breath-takingly beautiful.

Time flew, very soon the two hours were over. The boatman brought us Jump to the bank. We enjoyed every single minute we spent. It was really wonderful. The memory still haunts me.

There were three rowers. They began to sing. We looked towards the Ghats. We saw many people bathing and praying the sun was shining brightly.

The water of the Ganges was clear. At the top, the temples were shining like gold. The whole atmosphere was bright and gay. Within an hour we reached the opposite bank of the river.

How did we enjoy it?

Then we took a rest for some time, my friend Raju had a camera with him. We capture various beautiful scenes.

My friend Ramesh has a large collection of old songs; we sat there and listened to songs. We all were hungry and decided to have some refreshments, so we took tea, biscuits, and samosas with us.

We continued our journey ; the boat was moving sometimes this way or the other. Some women were filling their pots with the holy water of the Ganges.

They were singing their folk songs. Some Sadhus were worshipping at the Ghats, some were reading the Ramayana. Some were standing in the water.

We were very happy. My friends like the program very much. The day passed in joy. We paid 300 rupees to the boat owner. Then we returned home with sweet memories.

A Journey by Boat

3 Best Essays on ” A Journey by Boat”

Essay No. 01

I had always been curious about a boating excursion and yearned to have one. The opportune time came last Sunday when early in the morning, my friend, Satish, came to me with a proposal. I at once accepted the proposal and thus grabbed the opportunity.

Satish, an extrovert as he is had roped in two more of our common friends, Dinesh and Naresh. We all four moved towards the river Yamuna. To my surprise and delight, Satish had already settled the terms with a boatman and he was there on the bank of the river waiting for us.

It was late in the afternoon. We embarked the boat most jovially and inquisitively. Satish took out his flute and started playing it as the boat moved. Then ripples in the water were a wonderful sight as I discovered and particularly so, as the moon soon appeared in the sky and spread its silvery beams on water. The waves and ripples in the river seemed to be playing with the beams of the sun.

As if in a sudden fit of frenzy, Dinesh got up and started dancing. Perhaps subconsciously not desiring to be left behind, we all joined him in his frenzied movements arising out of sheer joy and freedom from anxiety and worldly concern that the moments offered us.

Having enjoyed ourselves and after finishing all the fruits, chocolates, and other stables that we had brought with us, we asked the boatman to start the journey backward. I can never forget this happy journey in the company of my best friends in life.

A Journey By Boat

A journey by boat is not a common thing for me. I have sat on a boat once in my life. so it was full of interest for me.

Once I had to go to Allahabad to join a ceremony. Many other relatives had come. It was bathing day. So we decided to go for a bath in the Ganga. We deiced to go on a boat from Baluaghat to Sangam. The idea was liked by all. So we started on foot on Baluaghat. We were 16 in number. Many boatmen requested us to sit in their boats. We chose a small boat painted in blue. The wages were settled and we sat in the boat. There were two boatmen. They asked us to sit properly on both the sides of the boat.

The boat sailed. It moved gently. We saw the building on the banks. It was a pleasant sight. We were going down the current. So the boatmen had not to work hard. We passed by the side of the famous fort of Allahabad. It was built by Akbar. In about an hour we reached the Sangam.

We took off our clothes. Then we took bath in the water. The water was not very deep. There was a large number of tortoises. Children feared them. As soon as we had taken our bath, we got into the boat again. The evening was drawing near. We wanted to return home quickly.

The return journey was difficult. The boat was going against the current. The boatmen had to work hard at the oars. We saw the glorious sunset. It was a beautiful sight. The sun’s rays made everything red. The weather was clear when we started. Boats of different shapes and sizes passed up and down the river. Men, women, and children were taking bath on ghats. The breeze was blowing. Some boats with worshipping materials were also there so that one can worship Ganga Mata. The sun was going to set. It was a lovely scene.

Now suddenly, the sky in the west became dim. The boatmen cried ‘ A storm’. They seemed to be frightened. So we became more frightened. The storm was growing furious. We were in the middle of the river. The water rose high. It dashed against the boat. The boat shook from side to side. Some of us moved from their places. The balance was disturbed. The boatmen stopped us. They asked us to sit still and repeat ‘Ram, Ram’. The boatmen worked harder and harder. But it was now quite dark. We lost the home of life.

Suddenly the boatmen cried ‘ the bank, the bank’. We had reached the bank. We thanked Goel for saving us. We got down quickly and put our feet on the ground. We paid fifty rupees to the boatman. My wife also gave him twenty rupees. It was a singular experience. It was an adventurous and charming journey. I still remember the scenes of this journey. They were so beautiful,    they recollect in my mind again and again. I have never seen such scenes again. It became a memory journey.

A Boating Excursion

Picnics and boating often go hand in hand. People usually select places for recreation near rivers, lakes, or dams. Boating makes a person feel relaxed. The sight of large watery areas soothes the frayed nerves.

The boat for city dwellers is associated with a sense of freedom. When they sit in a boat the cool winds and the peaceful expanse of water make them forget the daily routine. They feel at peace with themselves.

As the boat moves forward, people often ask the boat mar to sing a song. The old boatmen usually sing old folk songs. These songs take a person away to the forgotten lands, where there were happiness and prosperity and no worries. These songs remind us of full rivers and lush fields. They bring to mind, happy people.

The boat ride on a full moon night transports a person into a fairyland. The waters of the lake or a river swell gently due to the attraction from the moon. The rays of the moon dance merrily on the water. The ripples produce by the boat and the waves lapping against the hull of the boat produce a soothing effect. The silvery water mirrors the trees and the monuments surrounding the lake or the river. They give an impression of a nether world, waiting to be discovered.

Such boat rides are also good for health. They increase the digestive capacity of the body and make one feel hungry. They also calm the mind and relax the tense muscles. This helps a body to rejuvenate itself. Frequent boat rides are also a good exercise, for the person who is rowing them.

Boating is also a good hobby, which can later be taken up as a sport. It increases a person’s awareness of the natural elements and sharpens his skill of survival in the alien environment. It also gives a person an opportunity to contemplate.

In all boating as a hobby or as a sport is good for the health and peace of a person

The Dragon Boat Festival on Qi’ao Island Essay

  • To find inspiration for your paper and overcome writer’s block
  • As a source of information (ensure proper referencing)
  • As a template for you assignment

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of the most famous Chinese holidays. It happens on the 5th day of the 5th month, according to the traditional Chinese calendar. On this day, the people launch boat races and eat traditional foods, with respect to the date and tradition, celebrating fealty and loyalty to the family. The origins of the holiday are unknown, but there are many popular theories that suggest the holiday to be associated with the death of Qu Yang – a famous Chinese thinker and poet. His death occurred during the war of the period of the Warring States, where his loyalty and honesty sent him into exile. When the news of his country falling to the enemies reached him, the poet committed suicide by jumping off the bridge. The villagers, who held him in great respect, launched sorties of boats in order to save him and, failing that, to retrieve his body. Other stories involve a daughter looking for her drowned father and going on a boat to find him. While stories differ one from another, they all have one thing in common – the boat.

However, not all of China celebrates this holiday the same way. One particular exception can be found in the traditions of Qi’ao Island, located in the Zhuhai Province. It differs from the rest of the country in many ways, as local traditions and religious beliefs intertwined with the traditional holiday, changing it into something new. Unlike the rest of the country, the villagers of Qu’ao Island celebrate the holiday for 5 days, starting on May 1st and finishing on May 5th. During each of these days, a different activity is performed to honor the gods of the village. There are several deities in the village, the most notable ones being Grandfather Torrent and General Cai’er. These gods are unique to the village in that they do not appear in any places outside of it. They are worshiped in three different blocks – the Dongxi block, the Zhongxing block, and the Qixi block, all dedicated to their respective deities.

Another odd difference between Qi’ao and the rest of China is that they do not celebrate the holiday by launching boat races, despite having a lake nearby. Instead, they conduct a parade, during which the participants are outfitted and arranged to resemble a dragon.

The rituals performed during the five days of celebration are numerous. On the first day, the ritual of the cleansing of Buddha occurs. The second day is the day of preparation for the celebration. Sacrificial food is also being prepared on this day. On the third day, the villagers visit each other’s blocks and worship the deities with sandalwood. The fourth of May is dedicated to worshipping the deities within their own blocks, bringing them offerings of food, and distributing amulets and lucky charms, such as the lucky rice or the lucky tea. The fifth of May is the parade day. During it, statues of deities are carried through the city, in special chairs. Fireworks are being used, as China is where they were invented in the first place.

The traditions of Qi’ao are unique and interesting from a historical perspective. They show how local traditions and gods interact with Chinese culture, adopting the celebration and mixing it with the commemoration of the village’s Gods, which occurs on the same date. It offers a unique blend not found anywhere else and should be kept that way as an important part of national tradition and culture.

Essay on Life of a Fisherman (899 Words)

February 22, 2018 by Study Mentor Leave a Comment

The delicacy of seafood would definitely bring a smile on the face of coastal dwellers just like an extra dollop of butter in food does on a Punjabi’s face.

Ever wondered whom should you credit for these fishes in your plates – “The Fisherman”.

A Fisherman in general belongs to a community of people who are engaged in fishing as their primary occupation. Fishing collectively refers to catching aqua creature that is fit for consumption by humans.

From shrimps, prawns to various types of fishes – catla, hilsa, salmon etc. there are a lot of varieties in fishes. Also fishing as an occupation involves sorting and selling them in local and global markets.

Fishing is done both in fresh water sources like lakes, stream and rivers as well as in marine ecosystems like seas and oceans.

Location of a fisherman plays an important role in the type of catch a fisherman would acquire to both run his business and make a livelihood. One must note just like farming even fishing is done in all states of India.

From Dal Lake in Kashmir, to Ganga River and its tributaries to the south Indian coastal regions, fishing is a very big thriving industry in our country and the Ministry of fisheries if responsible to look into the fishing occupation of our country.

It also governs the welfare of the common fisherman and looks into schemes for his development.

The fishing community, at large is dependent on government schemes and welfare proposals as most of them are uneducated and spend most of their lives solely in this profession.

Our country has a huge coastline of around 7500 km extending across 10 states and island territories.

Thus, fishing engages a significant portion of our population in the fishing business. It is reported that approximately 14 million of the country’s population is involved in the fishing industry.

Table of Contents

An ideal day of a Fisherman

A fisherman lives and works near the water bodies. The one who lives near seashore starts his day even before sunrise.

A fisherman generally engages himself and becomes part of a group.  He sets out to sail and catches fishes very early in the morning.

He generally has in possession, boats ranging from little ones to large boats, steamers to giant trawlers. Whether he uses the boats on rent or owns them depends on his economic status and financial condition.

Depending on the favorable or the unfavorable season, the kind of fish a fisherman intends to capture varies. A fisherman generally travels into sea with metal hooks, fishing nets and other fishing tools.

Usually a fishing exercise gets over before sunset. A good day is when a fisherman is able to catch fishes in abundance.

That day he and his family make a small feast. A fisherman’s life revolves around in this way and they generally feast on small things that make them happy.

After a fisherman comes back with his catch, he and his lady start segregating the fishes on the shore.

Once sorted the fishes are taken to local markets for sale. The fisherman has to sell the caught fishes to locals for consumption. He has to be able to do his business by sending the caught fishes to markets.

The fishing markets are located in interior regions generally. So it’s a life full of hardship for him. He also has to sell to the right customers to engage it for export.

It’s a means of livelihood for the fisherman and that is how his life revolves around. So right from procuring the raw material to segregating it and then finally marketing it, a fisherman has to master all possible skills of his trade.

In an off-season, a typical day is spent in repairing the nets, fixing the boats and planning the next fishing activity. A fisherman’s life is in sync with nature’s clock. It involves lot of physical labor, teamwork and skill.

Inland fresh water fishing has a slightly different pattern. There is no restriction in time or requirement of groups to carry out fishing.

Here, water bodies are smaller in size compared to big river streams.

A fisherman naturally acquires knowledge of areas that contain high density of fishes. This wisdom is passed over from generations and by his own experience.

Challenges faced by a typical Fisherman

Fishing is a big business. A majority of the fishes is consumed within the country itself. Hence, like agricultural export, is not looked upon as a great profession.

It is an uncertain occupation due to high dependence on seasons, is prone to maritime disasters like tsunami and torrential rainfall.

Fishes are perishable items and require good storage and transport facilities. They cannot be stored for too long.

When importing fishes from one land into another, fishes of a particular breed of fish may or may not survive in varying environmental conditions.

A fisherman in general gets meager income from fishing. High competition exists with his counterparts is also another reason for poor income generation.

Nature’s constraints leave a fisherman in helpless situations and they may suffer without work, income & support for his family.

Importance for the country and the way forward

Fish consumption is very high all over world. They form an important sector of food production, providing nutritional security to the food basket (Shrimps, prawn, crabs).

Presently, there are huge varieties that offer variety in taste. They are rich in protein. They bring in lot of foreign currency when exported.

A fisherman toils in his trade just like a farmer toils in the fields. So, importance has to be given to both the professions on par, considering the economic importance of the trade.

A fisherman should have access to easy bank loans for purchasing better boats and procuring tools . He should have a support system to mitigate the risks associated with his loan purchase.

Better relation with neighboring countries sharing waters should be forged.

Infrastructure development (for preservation of fishes) and providing basic facilities like good roads for transport connectivity. The fishing sector should be more organized and accountable.

BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France (AP) — A boat carrying migrants ripped apart in the English Channel as they attempted to reach Britain from northern France on Tuesday, plunging dozens into the treacherous waterway and leaving 12 dead, authorities said.

Most of the victims were believed to be women, some under 18, and many of the passengers didn’t have life preservers, officials said, with one calling it the deadliest migrant accident in the channel this year.

“Unfortunately, the bottom of the boat ripped open,” said Olivier Barbarin, mayor of Le Portel near Boulogne-sur-Mer, where a first aid post was set up to treat victims. “If people don’t know how to swim in the agitated waters ... it can go very quickly.”

Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules , growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants have been pushing them north. Before Tuesday’s accident, at least 30 migrants had died or gone missing while trying to cross to the U.K. this year, according to the International Organization for Migration.

Rescuers pulled a total of 65 people from the English Channel on Tuesday in a search that lasted more than four hours, according to Lt. Etienne Baggio, a spokesman for the French agency that oversees the stretch of sea where the boat ripped apart. Doctors confirmed 12 died, he said.

Image

Another 12 people were hospitalized, and two were in very serious conditions, authorities said.

Adam Beernaert, director of the Civil Protection authority, whose personnel looks after rescued migrants once they reach land, said the people his team attended Tuesday were traumatized. “What needs to be said is that they shouldn’t cross,” Beernaert told the AP. “The sea is not easy. Weather conditions change all the time.”

Baggio called it the deadliest migrant boat tragedy in the English Channel this year. In July, four migrants died while attempting the crossing on an inflatable boat that capsized and punctured. Five others, including a child, died in another attempt in April. And five dead were recovered from the seas or found washed up along a beach after a migrant boat ran into difficulties in the dark and winter cold of January.

Many of those aboard the vessel that broke up in the English Channel on Tuesday didn’t have life vests, Baggio said. He said the boat was an inflatable. Three helicopters, a plane, two fishing boats and more than six other vessels were involved in the rescue operation.

In another sea tragedy Tuesday involving migrants seeking a better life in Europe, a boat carrying migrants capsized in the Mediterranean off the Libyan coast, leaving one person dead and 22 missing, Libyan authorities said.

The agency overseeing the rescue operation in the English Channel said the boat got into difficulty off Gris-Nez point between Boulogne-sur-Mer and the port of Calais further north. Sea temperatures off northern France were around 20 degrees C, or about 68 F.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin went to Boulogne-sur-Mer to meet those involved in handling what he described as the “terrible shipwreck.” He said the boat was frail and small — less than 7 meters (23 feet) long — and that smugglers are packing more and more people aboard such vessels. Most of the people on the boat were believed to be from Eritrea, and most of the victims were women, he said.

Last week, the leaders of France and the U.K. agreed to deepen cooperation on illegal migration in the channel.

“We absolutely must — and this is a very important point — re-establish special relations with our British friends,” Darmanin said on Tuesday. He later told the AP that to successfully tackle smuggling networks, immigration legislation between the U.K. and France should be harmonized.

“It has now been 30 years that these problems remain, and it is absolutely necessary that we find solutions,” said Barbarin, the mayor of Le Portel.

U.K. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper called it “a horrifying and deeply tragic incident” and paid tribute to French rescuers “who undoubtedly saved many lives, but sadly could not save everyone.”

“The gangs behind this appalling and callous trade in human lives have been cramming more and more people onto increasingly unseaworthy dinghies, and sending them out into the Channel even in very poor weather,” she said.

“They do not care about anything but the profits they make, and that is why — as well as mourning the awful loss of life — the work to dismantle these dangerous and criminal smuggler gangs and to strengthen border security is so vital and must proceed apace.”

At least 2,109 migrants have tried to cross the English Channel on small boats in the past seven days, according to U.K. Home Office data updated Tuesday. The data includes people found in the channel or on arrival.

BOULOGNE-SUR-MER, France — A boat carrying migrants ripped apart in the English Channel as they attempted to reach Britain from northern France on Tuesday, plunging dozens into the treacherous waterway and leaving 12 dead, authorities said.

“If people don’t know how to swim in the agitated waters … it can go very quickly.”

Europe’s increasingly strict asylum rules, growing xenophobia and hostile treatment of migrants have been pushing them north.

Another 12 people were hospitalized, and two were in very serious conditions, authorities said.

It was not immediately clear what kind of boat it was. Three helicopters, a plane, two fishing boats and more than six other vessels were involved in the rescue operation.
