The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

The demand for financial specialists is on the rise and if you’ve got qualifications and experience in the industry, you could be in high demand right now.

But if you want an employer to invest in you and offer you a job, then you need to showcase your skills and prove how you can add value.

Find out how to do that with our top tips and finance cover letter examples in the guide below.

The example cover letters here should give you a good general idea on how your Finance cover letter should be formatted and written.

The rest of this guide gives more specific guidance on how to create your own cover letter in this format, and even includes some templates you can copy and paste.

How to write a Finance cover letter

Here’s how to write your own winning Finance cover letter

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

Type the content of your cover letter directly into the email you are sending, or if you are applying via a job board, directly into their messaging system.

The reason for doing this it to ensure that your cover letter gets seen instantly and you can start connecting with the recruiter as soon as they open your message.

If you attach your cover letter as a separate document, the recipient will have to open up the document, which will slow the process down, or make them less likely to even open your cover letter – which could mean your application gets skipped over.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the role of *Finance position* with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The sole objective of your cover letter is to motivate recruiters into to opening your CV. And you achieve this by quickly explaining your suitability to the roles you are applying for.

Take a look at the job descriptions you are applying to, and make note of the most important skills and qualifications being asked for.

Then, when crafting your cover letter, make your suitability the central focus.

Explain why you are the best qualified candidate, and why you are so well suited to carry out the job.

This will give recruiters all the encouragement they need to open your CV and consider you for the job.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

What to include in your Finance cover letter

Here’s what kind of content you should include in your Finance cover letter…

The exact info will obviously depend on your industry and experience level, but these are the essentials.

  • Your relevant experience – Where have you worked and what type of jobs have you held?
  • Your qualifications – Let recruiters know about your highest level of qualification to show them you have the credentials for the job.
  • The impact you have made – Show how your actions have made a positive impact on previous employers; perhaps you’ve saved them money or helped them to acquire new customers?
  • Your reasons for moving – Hiring managers will want to know why you are leaving your current or previous role, so give them a brief explanation.
  • Your availability – When can you start a new job ? Recruiters will want to know how soon they can get you on board.

Don’t forget to tailor these points to the requirements of the job advert for best results.

Entry-Level

A good finance cover letter usually has five sections, outlined below. When possible, connect each section back to the firm and its stated hiring needs. The following advice and examples show how you can use this strategy to optimize your letter for each application.

At the top of the page, include:

  • Your resume contact header, which should give your full name, address , email, phone number, and LinkedIn or other social accounts if applicable
  • The recipient’s name, title, company, and contact information (when available)

Note: Feel free to omit this section when sending your cover letter as an email message as long as your contact details are part of your email signature. If you’re unsure whether to send your letter by email message or attachment, first look for instructions on the job posting. When the posting doesn’t specify, it’s your choice – just bear in mind email messages are increasingly common, but an attachment is often still better for more formal applications to large employers.

2. Salutation

Address your recipient by name – this is the quickest way to signal you’re sending a job-specific letter and not a boilerplate. If you can’t find the person’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager” so your greeting is still tailored somewhat to each job opening.

Note: While a colon is standard punctuation here, you can use a comma if you know your recipient or the company has a casual work culture (sometimes indicated by a company description on the job posting). In rare cases, you may also trade out the standard “Dear” for a more casual “Greetings,” “Hello,” “Hi,” or even “Good morning.” But again, use your discretion and take cues from the job posting when possible.

Dear Mr. Doe,

Dear Holman Enterprises Talent Specialist:

3. “Hook” or introduction

Catch the reader’s attention by citing an achievement from your resume or a key credential the firm seeks in applicants. Then, connect that highlight to your main strengths and overall candidacy for the advertised finance role.

As an alternative to the work highlight approach, you can set yourself apart by networking. Begin your letter by citing any personal or professional connections you have with the hiring manager. If someone at the company alerted you to the job, use a line like “I was excited to hear from your colleague [Name] about [Company]’s new finance opening.” Or, if you’ve already met your recipient, mention that with a line like “It was great speaking with you at the [conference] last month.”

I’ve accumulated over 10 years of experience as a finance manager, and I was recently promoted to financial controller after earning Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) at Johns Hopkins University. I’m excited to partner with the University of California, Irvine, as a finance manager and put my skills to great use.

4. Job- or employer-specific paragraph(s)

This section is crucial, so think it through fully for each application in your job search.

On a separate document or sheet of paper, take 10 minutes to brainstorm why this finance position or employer interests you based on the job posting. (See tip No. 2 below for some related ideas.)

When you’re done brainstorming, review your notes: Do any stand out as important or persuasive? Adapt those points into one or two brief paragraphs that speak to the job opening at hand. By making this description a central part of your letter, you’ll more likely persuade the manager to give you a call.

Following this explanation, cite a few more of your finance skills or achievements , possibly as bullet points.

I’m inspired by Washington State University’s commitment to service and excited for the opportunity to use my skills as an accountant for the school. Some of my previous achievements include:

  • Improved low-performing accounts, increasing average revenue by 14%
  • Voted “employee of the month” multiple times in my three years with the University of Washington
  • Partnered with procurement services to consolidate weekly classroom supply orders to bulk monthly orders, reducing supply costs by $10,000 annually

5. Conclusion

Finally, request an interview and thank the hiring manager for their time and attention. Consider briefly restating why this finance job interests you and how you’d contribute to the firm’s success. To end your cover letter, use a simple closing like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and then your name.

I would love to schedule an interview with you when you’re available. We can go into further detail about how my accounting skills can financially improve Holman Enterprises.

Best regards,

Sarah Black

Finance Cover Letter Tips

1. show your skill at managing and growing assets.

You can start your letter strong by citing an improvement you made to financial systems or resources. Then, spell out how that success helped your employer achieve strategic goals or raise the bottom line.

During my three years as an accountant at the University of Washington, I streamlined the school’s accounts payable and receivable system, which increased the efficiency of processing admissions. I look forward to bringing that same level of success to Washington State University.

2. Tell why you’re a good fit

When brainstorming points for your cover letter, think about what this finance role has in common with your background or goals.

For instance, maybe you have an extensive background managing similar accounts or investments. Or the role centers on cost reduction, a skill area you’d like to develop further. While finance workers usually operate behind the scenes, they’re key to maintaining an organization’s integrity and public standing. So consider anything you know about the hiring firm’s reputation and how that aligns with your own work ethic.

The University of California, Irvine’s excellence and top-ranking reputation are the main reasons I want this finance manager role. I strive for excellence in my work, and I can bring success to the school’s financial department.

3. Highlight your other strengths as a finance professional

With a short list of bullet points, you can show your success in areas related to finance, such as cost reduction, revenue growth, or client relations. Where possible, quantify each achievement. For finance jobs, the best data to quantify are dollar amounts. But if those numbers don’t align with your job goal (such as moving from a large firm to a small startup), give percentages instead.

I’m excited to share my past success that could benefit the company:

  • Held monthly meetings with department leads, creating a 55% increase in departments keeping within their budgets
  • Mentored new employees, leading them in company standards and increasing new-hire productivity
  • Earned my certified financial planner (CFP) credential

finance cover letter examples

In the competitive field of finance, standing out from the crowd is crucial when it comes to securing a job opportunity. A well-crafted finance cover letter can make all the difference in getting noticed by potential employers.

Importance of a Finance Cover Letter

A finance cover letter serves as an introduction to a potential employer and provides an opportunity to showcase your qualifications, experience, and interest in the position. It allows you to highlight your achievements and explain why you are the best candidate for the job.

A strong finance cover letter can also help you stand out from other applicants, especially when you are competing for a highly sought-after position. It demonstrates your professionalism, attention to detail, and communication skills, all of which are highly valued in the finance industry.

How to Make Your Finance Cover Letter Stand Out

To make your finance cover letter stand out, it is important to tailor it specifically to the job you are applying for. Research the company and position and use that information to highlight relevant skills and experience.

When writing your cover letter, be sure to clearly state your interest in the position and demonstrate your knowledge of the company and its values. Use specific examples to showcase your skills and accomplishments, and make sure to address any potential concerns or gaps in your resume.

In addition to highlighting your qualifications, your finance cover letter should also showcase your personality and communication skills. Use a professional tone and be sure to proofread for any errors or typos.

Researching the Company and Job Description

When it comes to crafting a successful finance cover letter, research is key. This means understanding not only the specifics of the job you’re applying for, but also the culture of the company you’re interested in joining.

Understanding the Company’s Culture

Before you start writing your cover letter, take the time to research the company you’re applying to. This can include reading up on the company’s history and values, as well as analyzing its website and social media presence.

It’s important to get a feel for the company’s culture and what it values in its employees. Are they innovative and forward-thinking, or more traditional and conservative? Do they prioritize teamwork and collaboration, or are they more focused on individual achievement? Understanding these nuances can help you tailor your cover letter to the specific company and position.

Analyzing the Job Description

In addition to understanding the company’s culture, it’s important to carefully analyze the job description. This means going beyond simply reading the requirements and qualifications listed and taking a deeper dive into what the company is really looking for.

Look for clues in the language of the job description. Are they asking for someone who is detail-oriented or someone who can think outside the box? Do they value experience in a specific industry or technology? These details can help you tailor your cover letter to the specific requirements of the job.

It’s also important to be honest with yourself about whether you are truly a good fit for the position. If you lack certain qualifications or experience, explain in your cover letter how you plan to quickly get up to speed and why you believe you can excel in the role despite any gaps.

Researching the company and job description is an essential step in crafting a successful finance cover letter. Understanding the company’s culture and analyzing the job description can help you tailor your letter to the specific position and demonstrate why you’re the best fit for the job.

Choosing the Right Format for Your Finance Cover Letter

When it comes to writing a finance cover letter, choosing the right format is just as important as the content you include. The format you choose can have a significant impact on the way your message is perceived by potential employers, and can ultimately determine whether or not you get the job.

Here are three common formats to choose from when crafting your finance cover letter:

Traditional Cover Letter Format

The traditional cover letter format is the most commonly used, and involves addressing the letter to a specific person, including your contact information, and a brief introduction of yourself and your qualifications. This format is ideal for more formal jobs or positions in larger, established companies where professionalism is particularly valued.

To make your traditional cover letter stand out, it’s important to do your research and tailor your letter to each specific company and job posting. Additionally, you should clearly articulate why you are interested in the position, and what makes you a strong candidate.

finance cover letter examples

Email Cover Letter Format

In today’s digital age, email cover letters are becoming increasingly popular. This format involves sending your cover letter as the body of an email, rather than as an attachment. Email cover letters are particularly useful when applying for jobs that have a fast turnaround or require a quick response.

When writing an email cover letter, make sure to use a professional tone and include a clear subject line (e.g., “Application for Finance Internship”). Keep your email concise and to-the-point, and make sure to highlight your most relevant qualifications, experience, and skills.

Networking Cover Letter Format

A networking cover letter is used when you’ve been referred to a job opportunity through a professional contact. This format involves mentioning the name of the person who referred you, and highlighting any mutual connections or experiences you share with the person you are addressing.

When writing a networking cover letter, it’s important to mention specific details about the job opportunity and why you are interested in it. Additionally, you should emphasize your qualifications and how they align with the requirements of the job.

Choosing the right format for your finance cover letter can make all the difference when it comes to landing your dream job. Whether you opt for a traditional, email, or networking format, it’s important to tailor your letter to each specific job opportunity and highlight your relevant qualifications and experience.

Structure of a Finance Cover Letter

When it comes to writing a cover letter for a finance position, it’s important to follow a structure that showcases your qualifications and aligns with the company’s mission. In this section, we’ll discuss the key elements of an effective finance cover letter.

Introduction

The first paragraph of your cover letter should serve as an introduction to yourself and your interest in the position. Begin by addressing the hiring manager by name, if possible, and describe how you heard about the job. You can also mention any shared connections or interests you have with the company.

Body Paragraphs

The body of your finance cover letter should be composed of two or three paragraphs that highlight your relevant experience, showcase your skills, and demonstrate how you align with the company’s mission.

Highlighting Your Relevant Experience

In the first body paragraph, you should provide a brief overview of your professional background and how it relates to the position. This is your chance to highlight your most impressive accomplishments and skills that demonstrate your ability to excel in the job.

Showcasing Your Skills

The second body paragraph should focus on your unique skills and qualifications that make you a valuable candidate. Use this section to elaborate on the specific experience and expertise that you possess which aligns with the job requirements. You can also provide examples of projects or tasks you’ve taken on that demonstrate your financial expertise.

Aligning Your Goals with the Company’s Mission

The third body paragraph should describe how you align with the company’s culture and mission. This is your chance to showcase your knowledge of the company, its values and goals, and how your own aspirations can contribute to their continued success. You can also provide a few examples of how you might contribute to the company’s mission if given the opportunity.

Closing Paragraph

In the closing paragraph, summarize your interest and qualifications for the position and express your gratitude for their time in reviewing your application. Use this section to demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, and reiterate your availability for an interview.

By following the structure outlined in this section when writing your finance cover letter, you can effectively grab the attention of recruiters and hiring managers and increase your chances of landing an interview for the finance position you desire.

Writing Tips for a Finance Cover Letter

Your finance cover letter is your first chance to make a great impression on potential employers, and it’s crucial that you get it right. To help you create the perfect finance cover letter, we’ve put together some essential writing tips that you should keep in mind:

Using Keywords

When writing your finance cover letter, it’s important to use keywords and phrases that are common in the field. Many companies use an applicant tracking system (ATS) to screen resumes and cover letters for relevant keywords, so incorporating these terms into your writing can help get your application noticed.

Some common finance keywords include financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and accounting principles. Highlighting your experience and expertise in these areas can help you stand out from the crowd.

Writing in a Professional Tone

Your finance cover letter should be written in a professional tone, as you are applying for a job in a formal business setting. Avoid using slang or casual language, and focus on expressing your skills and qualifications in a clear and concise manner.

Remember to address the hiring manager by name and use proper grammar and spelling throughout your letter. It’s also important to proofread your cover letter multiple times to ensure that there are no errors or typos.

Avoiding Common Mistakes

There are several common mistakes that applicants make when writing their finance cover letter. One of the most common is failing to customize the letter for each job application. Reusing the same cover letter for every job can make you appear less sincere in your interest for that specific job.

Another mistake to avoid is being too generic in your writing. Hiring managers want to see that you’ve put effort into understanding the specific company and position, so be sure to tailor your cover letter to their needs.

Lastly, avoid appearing overly arrogant or unrealistic in your cover letter. While it’s important to showcase your strengths and accomplishments, be sure to remain humble and focus on how you can contribute to the company’s success.

Using keywords, writing in a professional tone, and avoiding common mistakes are essential components of writing an effective finance cover letter. By following these tips, you can increase your chances of standing out from other applicants and landing your dream job in the finance industry.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in Finance Cover Letters

When it comes to writing a finance cover letter, there are some common mistakes that can hurt your chances of landing your dream finance job. Here are three common mistakes to avoid:

Overusing Generic Buzzwords

It’s easy to fall into the trap of using generic buzzwords in your finance cover letter, such as “detail-oriented,” “hardworking,” or “results-driven.” However, using too many buzzwords can make your cover letter sound cliché and unoriginal. Instead, focus on describing your specific skills and achievements using concrete examples.

Not Customizing Your Cover Letter for Each Job Application

Another common mistake is not customizing your finance cover letter for each job application. Many candidates make the mistake of submitting identical cover letters for every job they apply to, which can make them appear lazy and uninterested in the position. Take the time to research the company and customize your cover letter to show that you understand the specific requirements of the job.

Failing to Follow Directions

Finally, failing to follow directions is a surefire way to get your finance cover letter tossed in the trash. Make sure you carefully read the job posting and follow all instructions regarding the cover letter submission process. For example, some companies may require a specific format or file type for your cover letter, or they may ask you to include salary requirements or references.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you’ll increase your chances of standing out from the competition and landing your dream finance job.
