How Cats Conquered the World

Scientists use 9,000 years of feline genetics to chart their global rise to power

When your cat leaves a mangled mouse on your pillow, he wants you to know that he’s a conqueror. In fact, he is part of a race of conquerors, the successful descendants of a winding journey in which cats made use of humans to conquer the world . Now researchers have used genetics to create the most extensive map ever made of cats’ path to worldwide domination, published this week in the journal Nature .

Modern domestic cats all descend from a single type of wild cat: Felis silvestris lybica . From archaeological studies, researchers believe that F. s. lybica ’s reign begins in the Near East, in a region stretching from modern-day Turkey down to Lebanon. Around 10,000 years ago, farmers began storing grain, which attracted pesky mice. Cats, it turned out, could help out with that.

But F. s. lybica also ruled in Ancient Egypt, where they left their traces in cultural artifacts from cat mummies to statues and paintings. Researchers wanted to know: How did these two separate cat-doms lead to today's global feline success? 

That wasn’t a question that could be answered with modern cat genetics alone. Around the world, the gene pools of modern cats are surprisingly similar, thanks to millennia of tagging along with human travelers and interbreeding wherever they went. “The modern domestic cats in Australia are the same as in Europe and as in America,” says Eva-Maria Geigl , paleogeneticist at the Institut Jacques Monod, CNRS and University Paris Diderot, and an author on the study.

So for this latest study, the team turned to the genetics of ancient cats around the globe to untangle their collective rise to power. By sifting through 9,000 years of genetic data, the researchers found that there were two separate waves of human-cat coexistence, with cats befriending both farmers and Vikings in their quest to spread around the globe. It also seems that over the course of this relationship, domestication happened fairly late in the game—if at all.

To collect enough samples, the researchers reached out to other scientists around the world for feline bones or teeth, whose toughness and stability make them most likely to harbor useable DNA. They ultimately analyzed over 200 ancient cat skeletons that spanned roughly 9,000 years. They also collected samples from modern cats for comparison. For each of these samples they looked at mitochondrial DNA, genetic material found in every cell that is passed on from mother to child, making it a useful tracer of evolution.

Combining the genetic information with the archeological and human historical records, the researchers teased out the basic pathways for kitty success. After cats befriended Near East farmers, and the farmers recognized their use, they began to crop up along the path of the farming movement. One striking example is a 9,500 year-old cat that was buried in a human grave on the island of Cyprus, where cats are not native. Some 6,000 years ago, after Neolithic farming practices began spreading, it seems that these people-friendly felines foraged northward and westward with humans into Bulgaria and Romania.

Thousands of years after cats in the Near East caught on, a second wave of cats began cohabitating with humans in Egypt. As we know from archeological evidence, cats began living with Ancient Egyptians from at least the 4th century B.C. But DNA shows that during Roman times, these Egyptian felines also began expanding through the Mediterranean, mixing with the Near East cats, and then heading up through the Baltics. Around the fifth and 13th centuries, they ventured through Europe and into Southwest Asia.

It seems cats had hit upon a winning strategy: Stick with humans. When the Viking era began, the expansion of Egyptian felines exploded, likely due to the popularity of ship cats that traveled along the trade routes keeping pests in check. “Rodents on ships not only eat and spoil the food, they also destroy the ropes, so rodents could be a disaster for sailors,” says Thierry Grange , a molecular biologist the Institut Jacques Monod, CNRS and University Paris Diderot and an author on the study. “Cats prevent these types of disasters.”

The researchers even found evidence of these human-loving cats at the Viking port of Ralswiek on the Baltic Sea, says Geigl, and the Iranian port of Siraf, confirming that the faithful mousers commonly joined sailing crews. And the cats’ venture didn’t end there: For thousands of years, these furry globetrotters have followed humans wherever they went, conquering every continent except for Antarctica.

This genetic tour de force was made possible not only thanks to the cheapness and efficiency of modern DNA sequencing, but also new methods in obtaining ancient DNA. The new research “adds to an array of studies coming out now with increasing success of obtaining ancient DNA,” says  Melinda Zeder , curator of Old World archaeology at Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. “(It) is clarifying the picture of initial domestication of animals ... and their dispersal … It’s a real technical accomplishment."

Yet while the new study may clarify how and when cats traveled with humans, it also raises new questions. Namely: Were these cats actually domesticated? And if so, when?

These queries are more challenging than they may first appear. What constitutes domestication, like  what constitutes a species , is still a matter of fierce scientific debate. Many researchers, Zeder included, define it in terms of a relationship: “For me, domestication is a two-way relationship in which the animal ... is actually benefiting from its relationship from humans,” she says. But that kind of relationship isn’t something that is easy to pinpoint using DNA alone.

Another marker of domestication that researchers often use is distinct changes in the animal's physical looks, like the floppy ears in dogs—a trait that humans likely didn't specifically select for, but seems to be associated with desirable qualities like a less aggressive personality, and can be identified in the genome. Yet modern house cats, besides being slightly smaller and stubbier, don’t look much different from their wildcat cousins, says Giegl. “It's basically still the same shape,” he says. “It has still the same behavior. It has still the same food habits.”

Genetics can’t tell the entire story of domestication, but it can offer clues. In this case, researchers traced a genetic marker for the splotchy tabby fur color. A similar increase in color variation crops up in other animals when selective breeding began, and could be linked with a range of desirable behavioral traits, explains Zeder. It’s also possible that ancient humans could be selecting for these marks, since it may have helped them spot their animals in a crowd. Either way, identifying when this coloring started in cats could help them pin down when selective breeding (rather than just cohabitation) began.

Researchers found the tabby marker in roughly 80 percent of the modern cats tested. However, it didn’t appear in the ancient kitties until around 1300 A.D. This means that efforts to breed cats to look or act a specific way likely didn’t happen until very late in the game. Some scientists even suggest that modern house cats still  aren’t fully domesticated —something that will come as little surprise to cat owners.

While the genetic picture is growing clearer, much is still fuzzy when it comes to our cat conquerors, says  Wim Van Neer , bioarchaeologist at the University of Leuven who came up with the idea for the study after finding several cats buried in a human cemetery in Egypt dating back 6,000 years ago, the oldest human-cat relations found in the region so far.

Van Neer still wants to know: Where did the first cats—those worshipped in ancient Egyptian—come from? To answer this, researchers need to find still-older Egyptian cats with intact ancient DNA, not an easy proposition in the hot and humid tombs. In the future, researchers could also use isotopes, variations of an element that weigh different amounts, to learn more about kitty diet, as well as study ancient cat jaws to learn more about how their delicate physique has changed through the ages.

What’s certain is that, while cats have changed little as they followed humans around the world, both have grown and benefited from the relationship. The rest, of course, is hiss-tory.

This year, the stars have aligned with something truly special — the release of Cat Quest 3. This game promises to be a pawsitively delightful adventure by blending together the cuteness of cats with genuinely addicting gameplay that’s sure to resonate with animal lovers and gamers alike.

Set in a beautifully crafted 2.5D open world, this action RPG lets you take control of a "swashbuckling purrivateer" (a cat, of course). You’ll explore a pirate-themed world known as the Purribean, teeming with evil Pi-rats on the hunt for long-lost mythical treasure. You will also navigate this terrain on your very own ship, solve engaging side quests, battle formidable foes and go on your own thrilling treasure hunt.

The Cat Quest franchise has always been celebrated for its charming graphics, clever puns and engaging storylines, and this latest installment is no exception. A simple, light-hearted story

Those who have played the first two Cat Quest games will know the story primarily takes place in an open-world kingdom. This time, however, you’ll set off on a quest around the sun-bleached, palm-strewn Purribean archipelago to find the mysterious North Star Treasure. 

As the tabby cat protagonist, you're chosen as one of the "Seekers" — individuals destined to discover the North Star, a legendary artifact said to grant any wish. Accompanied by a mysterious ghost sidekick named Captain Cappey, it’s your job to explore the world and claim the North Star before rival pirate factions can get their paws on it.  

Even though it’s a very simple story with almost no character development, it still manages to create an engaging experience that's easy to dive into. I found that the narrative never bogged me down, which meant I could fully immerse myself in the journey while clearing out dungeons and sailing to each little island. As much as I love incredibly deep and complex narratives (considering The Last of Us is my favorite game ever), it actually felt nice to play a refreshingly simple game on my PC .

There's plenty to explore in this colorful world

The pirate-themed world of the Purribean in Cat Quest 3 draws inspiration from the golden age of piracy but adds a delightful feline twist. The game features a map filled with lush tropical islands, each offering unique environments, quests and enemies.

The primary antagonists are the Pi-rats, a group of nefarious pirate rats on their own quest to find mythical treasures like the Northern Star. These cunning foes provide both comic relief and challenging battles, constantly trying to outsmart and outfight you at every turn. Your only way to survive in the Purribean is to engage in thrilling ship-to-ship combat or fight them hands on with your claws, blunderpuss and spells. 

While I do think the map is incredibly fun, I have to give credit to the streamlined gameplay. I could quickly board my ship and sail to the next island within seconds. Every island is visible on the overworld map right from the start, eliminating the need for loading screens. These compact islands offered a variety of quests and hidden character interactions that kept me engaged.

The Purribean is also rich with side quests that provide additional challenges and rewards, so if you get a little tired of the story, you can always find something else to do. One fun example includes hunting down three buried keys on a beachy island to help some fellow cats open their treasure chests (and yes, I got to keep the treasure in the end). Other quests often involve finding hidden valuables in dungeons by completing tasks and fighting off the Pi-rats inside. 

Purrsonalize your gear and look

I’ll always appreciate a game that has personalized features. Cat Quest 3 leans heavily into this aspect to ensure players upgrade their gear when fighting more challenging enemies. When visiting this menu, you can see your current level and inventory. This includes costumes, cute accessories, combat items (like claws and swords) and blasters. There are also three spaces you can unlock for any spells you collect through completing quests and exploring dungeons.

Being able to upgrade my gear and choose the appearance of my cat makes the adventure feel uniquely mine. I especially love that I can tailor my character’s abilities and look to match my playstyle in the game. For example, once I was able to travel to more advanced islands, the enemies were harder to defeat (I found this out the hard way). Taking a quick look through the personalization menu helped me locate some extremely effective claws for close combat, and then I progressed with ease. 

Of course, the only way you'll have some decent options is to find treasure chests and complete as many side quests as you can. Otherwise, you'll be stuck with a very simple (but very adorable) cat who won't do much damage while sailing the seas. 

Cat Quest 3 is a perfect choice for International Cat Day, and I know I’ll be playing it for weeks after. Its engaging gameplay, colorful pirate-themed world and customization feature make it an enjoyable experience for anyone who loves cats (or just wants to play a very entertaining game).

You may be surprised by the sheer volume of cat-themed board games available on the market. If you’re looking for a cat-themed game, you have plenty of options!

That said, not all of these games are good. In fact, some are pretty bad , and you probably wouldn’t make it through a single game. Sometimes, board game designers plop some cats on their game, but the game doesn’t actually have anything to do with cats.

Luckily for you, we reviewed the best cat-themed games below.

The 11 Cat-Themed Games

1. thinkfun cat crimes.

Cat Crimes is a logic-based game that directly involves cats. This game takes about 10 minutes to complete, making it one of the shorter options on this list. Each game revolves around a challenge card, and you can do as many challenge cards as you’d like.

The biggest pro of this game is the artwork. It’s fun, and the dual-layered board sets this game apart from lower-quality options. However, the fully assembled characters cannot fit in the box without being disassembled each time. It’s a small headache, but the assembly can feel a bit much when the game is so short.

The rulebook is straightforward to follow. With some explaining, you can even play this as a family with some younger children. It’s pretty fun figuring out which cat is where and who committed the “crime.”

Currently, there are no add-ons. Therefore, once you read all the challenge cards, the game loses its replayability (until so much time passes that you don’t remember them). Hopefully, this will change in the future.

2. The Isle of Cats

Of all the games on this list, Isle of Cats  is easily one of the best options. It’s a bit more expensive but still cheaper than most “adult” board games. The main point of this board game is to rescue cats, so it has a pretty large appeal. Each cat has a unique tile and also has a family. You have to fit each tile on your boat and keep the family together.

You score points by rescuing cats, finding treasures, and performing similar tasks. There are many supplements to this game, allowing you to expand it to up to 6 plays.

Calico is very loosely based on cats. There is a cat on the front of the box, and the game is named after felines. However, the gameplay and theme itself aren’t as cat-based as many of the other board games on this list.

In the game, your main goal is to build a quilt and collect buttons, which will attract cats. The player with the most cats at the end of the game wins. Each quilt has a specific design you’re supposed to follow, and the buttons add a touch of sweetness to the game. However, the main purpose of the game is to build a quilt with the chance of a cat showing up—not fully about cats, as you may expect.

The artwork is easily the best on this list. The cats look like realistic cats, just like on the front of the box. However, the other components are a bit cartoonish, which can make the game a bit wonky at times.

The gameplay is very simple, but it is best for older kids. It’s more of a laid back, aesthetic game than a fast-paced game. There is little player interaction, and it’s more about playing your best game than competing against other players directly. It’s a simple puzzle game, but it doesn’t offer anything drastically new.

4. Kookipets Nasty Cat Card Game

If you’re looking for a cat-based card game, consider Kookipets Nasty Cat Card Game . This cat-themed deck comes with 54 cards and rules for four different games. Each game is pretty straightforward, and most are obvious remakes of older games (like Old Maid, for instance). It’s a great option for kids, especially if they’re like most kids and like to switch games a lot.

The artwork is great and varied. There are 25 different cat personalities that are referred to as “Catitudes.” These different personalities are what create the four included games. Of course, as just a set of cards, this game is pretty cheap.

5. Cat Ladies of Maple Street

Simply put, this game is about “collecting” cats, just like a “cat lady.” Each player tried to build the best deck of cards to collect the most cats and, therefore, win the game. You play as one of the four interesting cat ladies. You use the in-game currency to buy more cats as you collect more cards.

The game rules are pretty straightforward. However, it is billed as a 12+ game, so it isn’t the best option for children. There is some reading involved, and it may be difficult to play unless the child can read at the appropriate level.

Furthermore, the whole concept of using coins to buy cards and then hearts to buy cats can be a bit complex. It’s absolutely an adult game. However, it’s still pretty simple and easy to learn. This isn’t a game you need to play a few times to figure out.

6. Cat-Tastic Board Game

Cat-Tastic teaches children how to care for real cats. It’s a simple dice-rolling game where you move your character across a board. It’s a bit like Monopoly in the board setup but not in the actual playing of the game. Each space will cause you to gain or lose money, adopt a cat, or pull an event card. Each event usually requires you to pay a particular business, which is often another player.

At the beginning of the game, each player chooses a business or two to own. These are all cat-centered businesses, like a groomer. The exact number of businesses each person gets depends on the number of players. (Games with fewer players end up with more businesses per player.) The businesses will cause different effects with event cards, and they may even cost money to maintain.

During the game, you can purchase more businesses. The game is over once someone gains six hearts.

7. CATastrophe

For families with older children, CATastrophe is a fairly simple game that can be a lot of fun. You start the game as a cat with nine lives. Throughout the game, you will lose lives until there is only one cat standing, the one who wins the game. The rules are exceptionally easy to follow, and each game takes about 30 minutes (though that may be lengthened to 45 minutes as everyone gets better).

The game is completely cat-based. For instance, you’ll get and use “curiosity” cards and dice to participate in cat-themed mini-games. There is a bit of strategy involved, which is why we recommend it for older children. However, even a 10-year-old can easily grasp the fundamentals.

8. Here, Kitty, Kitty

Here, Kitty, Kitty is another cat accumulation game. However, this time, you can adopt stray cats or steal kittens from other players. The premise of the game is there are tons of different cats in the neighborhood, and you want to own all of them (but so does everyone else).

Everyone has a property board, which includes a yard, porch, and house. At the end of the game, you’re rewarded points for cats in different areas of your property or absolutely no points if they’re in your yard. There are 40 cat miniatures in all, which are placed on the communal board at the beginning of the game.

During each turn, you can play cards you have in your hand, attract cats to your yard, or take other actions. Cards unlock certain actions, such as moving multiple cats, making opponents give you cats, or even attracting cats of a certain color to your property.

The game keeps going until the last card is drawn from the deck. At that point, everyone has a last turn, and then points are tallied.

9. Cat Chaos

Cat Chaos is an extremely straightforward card-swapping game. You win by collecting sets of cards, and you collect sets of cards by swapping with other players (while also trying not to give them too many sets). It’s very straightforward, though the strategy can easily get a bit complex. Therefore, we recommend it for older children and laidback adults.

This game is extremely casual. It only takes a few minutes to start playing, and the rules are about as straightforward as they get. This isn’t Monopoly, where you’re going to spend hours strategizing and playing. The artwork is easily one of the best parts of the game, and each card includes a cat-based pun on a famous person’s name.

However, many did report that the game feels a bit like a child’s game at times, and there isn’t much appeal for adults. It’s a game that can’t figure out exactly what age group it wants to be involved in.

10. Cat Lady

Cat Lady is another straightforward card game that is centered around cats. This time, you’re collecting food, toys, and other cat-related items to please your family of cats, which grows throughout the game.

This game is fairly short. It only takes about 20 minutes for two players to get through it, though it may take a bit longer for games with more people. Throughout the game, you’ll accumulate more cards, which come in several different types. Some are new cats, which indicates what food they need. They also give you victory points for feeding them, so collecting them is pretty important.

You’ll also collect costumes, catnip, and other objects, which reward you victory points in different ways. On top of having cards, the game also has a set of blocks and cat figurines, which you’ll collect from the cards you draw.

In the end, this game is pretty simple, and the complexity only comes from the specific cards you get.

11. Cat Bingo

As the name suggests, this game is traditional bingo , only cat-themed. The game features 64 different breeds of cats from around the world. These breeds are called out, and you cover the breeds on your card just like in any other bingo game.

The main draw of this game is the cat theme. However, it is just bingo. If you don’t like bingo, you probably won’t like this game, either. The art is very nice and quite realistic, though it still looks clearly painted. The same company makes several other bingo games of different themes, as well.

Cats are a pretty popular theme , so you can find tons of board games that at least feature cats in their artwork . Some of these games are fairly similar to games you may already be familiar with but dressed up in cat-themed clothing. Other board games are completely based on a cat’s temperament and stereotypes. In some games, you even try to collect cats!

There are tons of family-friendly cat games out there, as well as games that are pretty complicated. Therefore, you should find something for any age group or style of gamer.

What is it like to be a cat.

Video game marketing, as a rule, relies on the idea that some new frontier has been breached in our journey to completely separate our brains from the dull demands of our bodies. This is true for actually groundbreaking classic games like SimCity and Braid, but also applies to games that get rereleased year after year after year with minor tweaks. As a result, an industry that has had very few widespread advances in the past 20 years ends up talking about itself in almost revolutionary terms. This is Madden like you’ve never seen it before!

These are all lies — I have played hundreds of hours of Madden and can report that there is no version of either that I have not seen before. I enjoy playing video games, but I play them like I drink coffee: regularly, with minimal discretion or taste, and even less stimulation. Most of the time I am just pressing buttons to see some little avatar of myself do something on the screen.

For the past week, my wife, 5-year-old daughter and I have been playing Stray, which, as of this printing, is one of the best-reviewed games of the year. The sell is very simple: You are an orange cat. Not a cartoon cat that tells jokes and carries around guns, but just a regular cat who scratches couches, naps and jumps in boxes. There’s a very long and honestly somewhat flat story line that involves androids, an apocalypse and mutant rats, but none of that really matters. Stray is a hit, in large part, because gamers feel like this is what being a cat must really be like. It reminded me a bit of the 1988 French film “The Bear,” which tried to show the life of two real bears who acted like bears and did not speak English or break out into song or whatever. The point is that you don’t need an anthropomorphized version of the animal — this is the real thing.

The “realness” of Stray is apparently so complete that it puts some real cats in an almost hypnotic trance as they watch the unnamed video game cat amble around a postapocalyptic landscape. (This did not happen to my 13-year-old cat, Bobbi, who, like most real cats, spends her days peeing on the bathroom floor next to her litter box, pooping in the garden and cannot be bothered to pose for videos.)

I want to dwell for a moment on this idea of realism in video games because I’m not sure it’s a particularly worthwhile pursuit to just make games that almost perfectly mimic an actual thing. One of the most impressive and mind-bending games I’ve played was called Braid , an independently produced 2008 title in which you control a little man in a blazer as he hops around a castle filled with puzzles. You solve these puzzles by manipulating time — you have the power to rewind time but keep certain objects stuck in the present, which then changes the conditions of the game in a butterfly effect type of way. Braid changed the dimensions of gaming and proved you could exist in multiple realities at once. This effect was so disorienting and powerful that after playing the game for a few hours, I went downstairs to fix myself a sandwich and found that I could not perform the task without reminding myself the order in which one places the bread, the meat and the condiments.

The developers of Stray and Braid certainly had different goals in mind when they made those respective titles, but I do think the difference between them underscores a lively and interesting debate about the artistic value of a video game. Realism and the idea that a video game should make you feel like you’re actually something, whether a cat or even Spiderman (a funny breakdown of the latter can be found here ), has been a longstanding measure of quality in the industry. Games are judged on how closely their graphics adhere to real life and the “immersiveness” of their gameplay, which is oftentimes just another way of saying something like, “This really felt like I was a cat.” These aren’t monolithic standards to be sure, but judging video games on how closely they adhere to reality seems similar to judging paintings solely through the school of photorealism. Is the final product impressive? Yes. Does it move me emotionally? No.
