What was the first experience that made you think "I want to be an engineer"? Was there any one moment like that where you just decided you wanted to be an engineer and stuck to it or was it more gradual? Don’t know if I should be waiting for one "ah-ha" moment.

My interest to pursue engineering was two-fold which includes both a gradual interest and an 'ah-ha’ moment. I was first inspired by my dad, a carpenter, who built the house I grew up in. Over the years I helped him with various projects around the house and through bringing these projects from imagination to drawing board to real life, he instilled in me a love for construction. As a child, I also loved to build my own structures using LEGOs and loved reading detective stories that had a mystery or problem to solve.

Throughout school, I greatly enjoyed math, science, and teaching others so I thought I was going to become a teacher. The word “engineering” was not brought up until my Junior year of high school when I attended an Engineering Girls Camp at a local college. There I met young women currently studying engineering, along with professionals in a variety of engineering disciplines that became my role models. This camp taught me that civil engineering would be the perfect profession for me as it combines construction with the application of math and science through problem-solving.

Although my ‘ah-ha’ moment was late into high school, you can also see by my story that I have loved problem-solving and building from a young age. My recommendation to all those reading this is to be curious and try out a bunch of engineering-related activities like attending local STEM events in your area or joining a local robotics team to see if engineering is something you enjoy as well! And while you are at these activities, ask a lot of questions of the presenters who are most likely college students or professionals in STEM fields. There is so much within the field of engineering, so by asking them questions, you may learn about a field or opportunity that you would love within engineering!

I wasn’t sure I wanted to be an engineer. I actually made the decision based upon the fact that I had appropriate capability and I would be able to make a good living doing it. That might sound like an uninformed method to make the decision, but has actually worked out quite well. I have always loved math and science and they come naturally to me. The work that I did in my early years as an engineer was all about leveraging that skill to solve problems, so it was very enjoyable and satisfying to me. As I grew in my career, I took on more and more people coordination and eventually people leadership because I also enjoy interacting with people and driving decisions. I’m actually just not patient enough to let things linger when a decision should be made. Don’t worry if there isn’t an “ah-ha” moment. The other wonderful thing about engineering is that there are so many ways to leverage an engineering education that you almost can’t go wrong with the decision.

The first experience that made me think "I want to be an engineer" was the fact that my favorite subject in high school was math. Also, both of my parents are software engineers so I had the idea already in my mind. However, the moment or event that made me realize I wanted to be an electrical engineer was when I took advanced physics in high school and we learned the basics of electronics. I remember we had to do a project for the class that was building a cardboard house and designing all the electrical layout of the house, basically putting small light bulbs in each of the rooms all connected together to the central power line that was fed with a 9V battery. I loved the project and the whole class. Then I started researching more about what an electrical engineer does and what type of jobs I could get. I learned that an Electrical Engineer could design the chips that were on our smartphones, iPods (I used to have an iPod to listen to music during high school), and all those devices that I loved. After this research I was really excited to go for an electrical engineering degree.

Some people have that "ah-ha" moment randomly at some point of their life, but also you need to look for it. Think about what subjects you like in high school and what particular subject you enjoy the most. Also, dig a little deep about that topic and see if you could get a job related to it. This will help you decide not only if you want to go for an engineering degree, but also what type of engineering, and what specialty do you want to pursue. Engineering is a very broad field and you can do a lot of things.

Deciding to become an engineer was a gradual decision for me, but I did have an ‘ah-ha’ moment when selecting what field of engineering to pursue.

I always did well in math and loved art, and as a college freshman at Michigan State University (MSU) I developed an interest in chemistry and atomic physics. I thought that engineering would be a good combination of all these fields, so I took a one credit course called “Introduction to Careers in Engineering.” During this very helpful class the Chairman of the Department of Materials Science showed us a piece of special wire, called shape memory alloy, which he crumpled into a ball. Then he heated it with a lighter and it “magically” formed into a perfect coil. I found the material fascinating and decided to pursue a degree in materials science engineering, and ended up loving all my materials science classes.

Between my junior and senior years I obtained a summer job at Clark Equipment Company conducting metallurgical failure analysis (why did something metal break). This job helped me understand that I loved working in a lab conducting research. So, I decided to get a master’s degree in materials science from MSU. While working on my master’s degree, my advisor helped me obtain a summer job at NASA Glenn in Cleveland, Ohio. After working for the summer at NASA, I knew I wanted a career conducting materials research at NASA. I have been very fortunate as I obtained my dream job and have conducted materials research for NASA Glenn for the past 30+ years!

My advice: While in high school, try to shadow engineers in various engineering fields. As a college freshman, take an introduction to engineering class if available. And, try to get summer jobs or internships in the field(s) you think you are interested in.

I never had an ah-ha moment for deciding to become an engineer. I was always good at math and was drawn to it. I was also drawn to puzzles and other problem solving games and activities. I did not have much insight into engineering when I started in college. However, as I took classes and ESPECIALLY when I did co-ops and internships at engineering companies, I gained that insight. And I liked what I saw and learned. I would say it was more comfortable than jumping up and down with excitement. The applications were very interesting – even though at the times I did not understand a lot of the details. It was fascinating. I have changed areas of engineering I work in a number of times. I believe my initial draw to problem solving was the biggest factor in being directed to engineering. I think when you are in high school you don’t always understand how different people can think so differently. I have come to believe the ‘problem solving brain’ is a type of person that makes an excellent engineer! I never did have a “love at first sight,” it was certainly more gradual.

I actually wanted to go into the medical field for a while, first as a paramedic then as a doctor. However, in my senior year of high school, I took both physics and calculus. I learned I really enjoyed the problem-solving aspects of both subjects and how you could apply a few formulas to get an answer to a problem. The more I thought about it this appealed to me more than the memorization required for subjects like biology and other pre-med subjects.

This all happened while I was applying to colleges and only made me more confused about what I wanted to do. I have to admit when I applied to colleges I applied as all different majors. One I applied as pre-med, one as architecture, and one as Spanish. I could see careers in all of those fields since I enjoyed aspects of them. After talking to some teachers, they recommended looking into engineering. After looking into it a bit more, I realized I enjoyed the classes that I would be taking the most. It was also the major that offered the most flexibility in what to do after college. One other thing I decided was I was not in love with medicine enough to devote 8+ years to starting a career with college then medical school then residency. Engineering allowed for a great career right out of school.

If you are not sure of what you want to do, engineering is a great major to have. I know people who have an engineering undergrad and have gone on to become a doctor, go into finance, become a lawyer, and many other fields. An engineering degree teaches you problem-solving skills that become applicable in any field.

My Form 2 physics teacher showed us an optical fiber Christmas tree and I thought "Wow. How beautiful!" It triggered my interest to look into how it works which is reflection of light based on reflection index. My dad mentioned Nobel prize recipient Sir Charles Kuen Kao and his amazing work in how optical fiber plays a big part in the telecommunication industry which was the first time I learned about materials engineering. The Engineering Student

A simple bridge truss was the first structure I ever analyzed. The simple combination of beams that could hold cars, trains, and trucks over long spans of water fascinated me. Having the tools to analyze the loads on the truss further increased my interest in structures. I encountered the bridge in a textbook for my first engineering class.

Knowing that the professor, Mr. John Doe, was a tough teacher, I asked him for the textbook so I could study and get ready for the class over the summer. Just arrived from Belize, I was determined to succeed. In class we learned about forces on simple members and then we put the members together to form a simple truss. At this point I had almost decided that structural engineering was the career for me. From there the class just took off: We went on to frames, distributed loads, considered friction; basically we were incorporating real world considerations into structural members. I loved the practical, problem solving aspects of the field.

At UC my classes were even more advanced. In my analysis and design classes, I especially enjoyed studying steel design because we not only learned the use of the load resistance factor design but also applied that knowledge — I designed a four-story building. The professor was a practicing engineer, and he always related the subject to real life steel structures he had engineered, for example, the SB Medical Center, an all steel building with a base isolated campus. This is the kind of project on which I would like to work, designing the structure and considering how the building will respond to ground motion. After two quarters of structural analysis, I had come as close as possible to analyzing real world structures. Looking back I realize, I had learned great tools for structural analysis, but my "tool box" was still inadequate. I lacked a very important tool: finite element analysis. According to my professor, finite element analysis has revolutionized structural analysis.

Although I liked my classes, my internship experiences really confirmed my interest in structural engineering. While working at Caltrans as a student volunteer, I reviewed computer grading output for streets under construction. The computer suggested numbers for the road grading, and I had to plot the numbers and make sure there were no abrupt grade changes so the water can drain off easily to the sides of the road. It was exciting to know that I was the last checkpoint before the whole project went for approval. It was enjoyable working on something real — Main Street — but I was somewhat disappointed I did not have the chance to work on any structures.

At UC I volunteered through the Student Research Program to work in the geotechnical library. I worked directly with a doctoral student and helped him to develop a geotechnical data base for the local area. I interpreted the data Caltrans had collected and recorded it in a form accessible to the computer and easy to read. It took hours to finish the job, but I enjoyed the precision involved so I did not mind putting in the time. My supervisor liked my work so much, he hired me to continue the project during the summer. Working on this project also showed me the importance of soils in determining buildings’ responses to earthquakes and awakened my interest in the response of skyscrapers to seismic stress and movement.

At First Choice U, I plan to enroll in the structural engineering and geomechanics program. In this program I hope to draw on my structural analysis and geotechnical research background as a foundation for studying more advanced concepts. I am particularly interested in researching the ties between the structural engineering, geomechanics, and applied mechanics. I believe research is necessary to acquire data and formulate theories, but it is just as important to know how to apply those theories and use that data in the real world. I hope to be involved in some structurally related research at First Choice U. I am particularly interested in two research facilities: The Structures and Composites Laboratory and the Earthquake Engineering Center.

After completing my degree in engineering and working on engineering projects, I know I want to design structures. That is what has fascinated me since I took Mr. Doe’s class. I also know, however, that designing structures of a complexity that appeals to me requires "more tools in my toolbox." Those I can acquire only by continuing my education. To be competent and competitive I will need a masters degree. After completing my degree, I would like to work for an American engineering consulting firm and engineer complex structures and tall buildings, perhaps focusing on the problems surrounding designing for earthquakes. My long-term goals are to return to Belize and found my own engineering consulting firm there.

Structural engineering will allow me to pursue a career where I can be creatively involved in problem-solving and design functional structures, like the simple truss bridge that initially captivated me in Mr. Doe’s class. My classes, work at Caltrans, and internship in geotechnical engineering have increased my knowledge of and interest in structural engineering since I first looked at the textbook shortly after my arrival in the U.S. A masters degree will give me the up-to-date tools and knowledge to be competitive and competent.

What is an engineering personal statement?

Your engineering personal statement should tell the university all about your strengths, skills, experience and ambitions.

It should also convey your enthusiasm for engineering (either in general, or for a specific branch such as civil, aeronautical, etc.), and what aspects of the subject you enjoy and why.

Your engineering personal statement will be used by universities to decide whether you are a good candidate to study engineering, and whether they want to offer you a place on their course.

How do I write an engineering personal statement?

It’s a good idea to start your statement with why you want to study engineering at university. Try to pick one or two specific aspects that you like in particular and why they appeal to you.

Make sure you back up everything with examples (always show, don’t tell). You need to convince the admissions tutors that you they should offer you a place on their engineering course over anyone else.

A successful engineering personal statement should be written clearly and concisely, with a good introduction, middle, and conclusion.

What are the entry requirements for engineering?

If you want to take a degree in engineering you need an A level (or equivalent) in maths. In many cases you also need physics.

Some chemical engineering degrees ask for maths and chemistry instead; some ask for maths and physics; and some ask for all three.

You have spent months researching and identifying the best engineering schools, studying for and completing the SATs, GRE, or other standardized tests, and filling out tedious college applications. You are on the verge of burnout when it hits you: you have to write a personal statement.

How important is it to write a great personal statement? Ask the admissions committee, and they’ll tell you that writing a personal statement is like applying for a job. Stephen J Aguilar, an assistant professor of education at USC, reported in 2020 to Inside Higher Ed that a personal statement should be less revealing and more persuasive. At its core, the personal statement needs to answer these two questions:

Why are you applying here?
How do your interests and experiences align with the program or the faculty you’ve identified?

However, the importance of reading and understanding the question prompts cannot be overstated. For example, the University of Iowa College of Engineering, which places 97 percent of its undergraduates in jobs post-graduation and currently has 284 master’s and doctoral students, goes one step further to differentiate personal statements from statements of purpose .

This institution wants to know in the statement of purpose , “Why is this program a good fit for you?” By contrast, the personal statement elicits answers to the question: “Who are you?” and allows applicants to explain themselves to admissions committees regarding academic achievements and life events that have shaped them and will positively influence the campus community.

That said, a personal statement is not just an essay. It has to be intelligent, engaging, typo-free, and capable of convincing admissions reviewers that you are a better fit for their program. Fret not. With lots of research and preparation, you can submit a college essay that reflects your passion and capabilities.

How Is a Personal Statement Evaluated?

The title “personal statement” is generally synonymous with college essays. However, some admissions professionals use it to refer more specifically to written statements that explore applicants’ program readiness and intentions if admitted. The purpose of these statements for engineering school applicants is three-fold.

First, colleges want to know that they can write well, and not just from a technical perspective. Of course, grammar matters, but perhaps more important is the ability to communicate ideas.

Second, engineering schools want to know who a student is—the nuggets that are not conveyed through a conventional application or school transcripts. This is the written equivalent of the interview question “tell us about yourself” and is the applicant’s chance to share who they are, what they want to do, and how gaining admission to this program will be mutually beneficial.

Finally, colleges want to ensure applicants are familiar with and committed to the program. The best personal statements fulfill these goals, often in 700 words or less.

Does this sound like a tall order? Here are some tips for getting it right.

Six Tips for Writing a Stellar Engineering School Personal Statement

1. Do the research

It may sound simplistic, but one of the most important (and often overlooked) steps toward getting into the right school is taking the time to research a prospective engineering program, review its admissions policies and—this cannot be overstated—read and reread its application essay prompt. Candidates who don’t sufficiently answer an institution’s question or convey some misunderstanding about the prompt or its expectations are unlikely to be admitted.

Prospective students completing the Common Application should take the time to contact each engineering school they are applying to inquire about additional admissions requirements. The Princeton Review emphasizes that a personal statement should not repeat a previously discussed part of your application, nor should its information contradict another part.

2. Go deep, not broad

Personal statement prompts tend to be targeted. Engineering schools want to know what specific qualities or experiences make each student a good fit for their programs. Common inquiries include recalling a time you solved a problem, explaining why you applied, describing your academic goals and intentions, and addressing any extenuating circumstances that might have impacted your school record. Rather than offering a broad synopsis of your life, choose the experience or intent most relevant to the question and explore it in depth.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Graduate School offers advice for writing an in-depth personal statement for engineering schools using the “qualified match” approach. The steps include:

Make a statement that fits the essay prompt, like “I am a dedicated and hard-working student.”
Quantify your statement with specific details about your life. You might, for example, discuss how many hours per week you spend on school work and how you overcome any obstacles to committing that time.
Interpret how those details make you a stronger applicant. To continue with the above example, that might include writing about the knowledge you gained during your studies, your time-management skills, your passion for learning, and your commitment to succeed despite challenges.

3. Be relevant

If a personal statement has only one goal, it is to be shown to a review committee that you are the right fit for its school. That’s why applicants to Stanford University’s Institute for Computational & Mathematical Engineering are asked to specify their personal and professional goals in their statement of purpose, as well as discuss their developments and intentions for study and life beyond their doctoral program.

Read the mission statements of each program to get a feel for what they are looking for and keep that in mind as you write. Rather than getting carried away detailing the hours you log volunteering each week, discuss experiences and activities as they relate to your academic and career goals or scientific interests. Also, be sure not to waste valuable ink rehashing information available elsewhere on your application, such as extracurricular activities or your stellar GPA.

4. Avoid gimmicks and cliches

Did you love playing with Legos as a kid? Did those plastic bricks lay the foundation for your drive to be an engineer? If so, the College of Engineering at the University of Washington suggests you are in good company, but not in a good way. Every year, the committee reads personal essays on how Legos were the building blocks of a student’s career in engineering.

To stand out, engineering school applicants should avoid using cliches in their statements. Of course, setting yourself apart from other applicants is imperative, but you must do so in a meaningful and unique way. Admissions review panels have seen it all and are unlikely to be moved by creative gimmicks and attention-grabbers that do not get to the heart of what makes you a great candidate.

5. Mind your mechanics

This tip refers more to the mechanics of writing than any scientific drive, though the latter undoubtedly has a place in an engineering school personal statement. Remember when we said one of the goals of college essays is verifying applicants can communicate effectively? Applicants should consider the following elements as they prepare their outline (more on that next):

Voice – Is your voice appropriate for the task? Is it too formal or casual? Are you using active language rather than passive and wishy-washy statements? Do you come across as academic?
Structure – Do your ideas flow logically and support one main idea? If you are unsure where to start, know that following the reliable five-paragraph essay format is perfectly acceptable: introduction, three supporting paragraphs, and a tidy conclusion.
Length – Engineering schools usually have a good reason for requesting personal statements with a specific word count. Those that are too short have too little to say, and those that are too long are likely to repeat the same concepts.
Grammar – College students are expected to know and use basic grammar. Edit, edit, and then edit again.
Completeness – Have you addressed the admissions essay prompt in full? What about any supplemental school or department-specific requests?

Good or bad, there are always reasons behind choosing a passion or profession for life. It is hard to pursue a thing for that long and dedication if one is not motivated from within. I admit my first exposure to engineering and becoming an engineer was a tad emotional, but I quickly found my reasons and they helped me anchor that idea.

No Boring Day At Work

One of the best things about being an engineer that attracted me to the profession is the exposure to sheer creativity. As an engineer, I will always be on my drawing board or computer designing innovation and sketching out new and exciting things or I would be out there in the field working on that design to make it a reality.

With new things to create each day, I would not have to be worried about being bored at work or hating my job. This is the driving force behind my choosing engineering as a profession.

The next dimension to “no boring day at work” is the challenges that engineers face each day, from designing to materializing that design. As an engineer, my real worth will always be in facing challenges head-on and utilizing my knowledge and natural curiosity as an artist to create things.

It will be a lot of fun to defy the assumptions and beliefs of other engineers in my field and show them how it is done.

A Chance to Build Future

Engineers contribute a lot to making society a better place. They are always looking out for new ideas to mold them into reality – to make lives easier and happier for others.

For instance, engineers, from Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, etc, created skyscrapers, medical devices for a clinical environment as well as appliances we use in our daily lives.

All of this combined help us progress and become advanced. As an engineer, there is no other way to be revered and be proud of your life achievements than by being considered a pioneer in your field.

Key Role in Nation Building

From early childhood, everyone gets attached to the nation he or she is born into. They love their city and the country as a whole and want to serve it in the best way possible. This is another strong motivation for me to become an engineer.

As an engineer, I will be able to play a key role in nation-building. From proper urban management to town planning and beyond, we engineers play a crucial part in developing nations.

With advanced infrastructure and all the amenities of life, our country would be one of the best in the world which will make us all proud.

Leadership & Responsibility

Engineering jobs need a great leader that can take responsibility for every task, whether it is easy or hard, a success or a failure. With a responsible leader at the helm, every team player feels confident and does not shy away from giving their best.

As a project manager and leader of my team of engineers, I will uplift my coworkers and help them come up with new ideas and then help them in making these ideas a reality through our own company.

Above all else, I will stand by my decisions and be responsible for everything I will be a part of. This is what makes a great candidate for a leadership role in engineering.

I felt as if I was a junior engineer working with a senior. I want to keep that feeling for the rest of my life until I would become a senior engineer and help out a junior to keep the chain reaction going.

I have nursed a key interest in engineering since my earlier days as a juvenile. As an apprentice of my father, a petroleum engineer, I was fascinated by his exposes on advances in technology, especially in the petroleum engineering field. When narrating his stories, he would always attach a societal perspective to the many inventions and innovations he told of. According to him, advancements in technology were solutions to problems that dogged the society. He painted engineers as supremely endearing people who had the interests of the society at heart. As a curious child growing up, I was consumed with the notion of making my community a better place through inventions and innovations in the field of engineering. I knew I would help solve the problems of the twenty first century. Therefore, my dream to become an engineer came as no surprise.

In the future, I want to be a petroleum engineer. My studies in college will major in the field of Petroleum and Geosystems engineering so that I am able to augment my competencies in the field. Petroleum and petroleum products provide slightly over seventy percent of the world’s energy requirements. However, the production and processing of petroleum into its various products has been marred by environmental concerns. I therefore feel strongly for the innovation of mechanisms that would mitigate the environmental impact that oil and gas drilling has on the environment. Therefore, it is my feeling that designing more efficient procedures will help solve the major tribulations of the twenty first century especially in the engineering world and by extension, the societal world.

My future dreams as a petroleum engineer are informed by my philosophy; sustainability in every process. Engineering is an energy intensive field and the burning of fossil fuels that are a source of pollutants is not sustainable. It is my dream to partner with likeminded individuals in the energy sectors to come up with innovations that provide cleaner and more sustainable source of energy. My main interest is to participate in consortiums deliberating on technological advancements in the field of solar energy and nanotechnology. It is my dream to gift the society with a source of energy that will not orchestrate the imminent destruction of the globe. In order to realize this, I need to appraise research projects in the sector of renewable energy. This will require enhancement of my competencies in the field through mastership and doctorate studies on relevant fields.

This will pave way for more in-depth research in the field of renewable energy through partnerships and collaborations. This will augment very well with my philosophy. I will also help conserve the environment so that the coming generations can also share in it. Finally, it is my dream to inspire the next generation of engineers so that there is continuity of knowledge and purpose. It is my dream to nurture young minds into responsible thinkers who are liberated in the sense that bettering their environment offers them fulfillment and satisfaction. This will ensure that a field that I have a passion for continues to touch the lives of humankind in grand ways. In the spirit of social responsibility, I want to help a child conceive and nurture a dream just like my father did with me.

Long term indicators of success

Dreams are ambitious visualizations of future situations. However, if one is not careful, they may live under the illusion of the dream and never actualize it. It is because this cause that I have set indicators to guide me along the way. They are supposed to tell me when proceedings are going according to plan and when they have deviated. I have short term indicators and long term indicators. As pertains the long term goals, thirty years from today, I want to first have gotten a doctorate in a specialization of my choice in the field of petroleum engineering. In line with my obligation to the society, I aspire to be a professor in a university so that I can mold students into leaders in engineering. In the same capacity, I want to have written and published over a thousand journal entries from the various research projects that I will have appraised.

I want to head as the founder of a company to appraise offshore and onshore oil and gas drilling explorations. The company will use the technology developed through research to ensure the procedures undertaken are environmental friendly. Through research, I hope to have patented ways to enable the realization of geothermal energy production, coal gasification and drawing out of valuable minerals as in-situ uranium leaching. As a petroleum engineer, I also want to impact in non-energy activities like pollutant remediation, hydrology and underground waste disposal. I also want to license such technology to other companies for use in developing solutions to the present day problems. It is my hope that the company will nurture the skills in young engineers through apprenticeship and internship so that there is continuity in the knowledge gaps.

Another indicator of a successful life will be the production of geothermal energy production and coal gasification for industrial use in partnership with like minded individuals. This is in line with my philosophy for sustainability in every process. Participation in the conservation of the environment through technological advancements and innovation will be a strong indicator of a successful life.

Finally, in thirty years, I hope to have started and nurtured a family. I hope to lead my family by example and just as my father did, I aspire to help my children conceive and realize their dreams. If I am able to achieve all that in thirty years, I will be content in the fact that I have lived a successful life.

Much water has flown under the bridge since 2010 when I graduated from RMIT. Diploma in my hands, a farewell party left in the past, I was looking into the future, starting a new life, full of challenges. An engineering profession is not an easy one, but I was never searching for easy ways and never regretted the occupation I had chosen. Now looking back to my life I would change nothing.

I always had everything a successful engineer needs. Inquisitive by nature, from early childhood I tried to make things work more efficiently, continually examining them and inventing new unexpected ways of their usage. I always could think logically and was mathematically inclined, paid much attention to the slightest details, as a single mistake may spoil the whole engineering project and put in vain hours of a team’s hard work. It is very important to find your place in this world and I was lucky to do so. I must admit that I had three stars that lightened my career path and inspired me.

The first star was the star of Leonardo Da Vinci, a great Renaissance inventor that could consider himself an engineer, whose contribution to world science and bright personality impressed me much. He became my icon and inspiration, an ideal engineer so to say. Leonardo’s ideas were far ahead of his time, he was a great innovative thinker. It is a striking fact that his writings and sketches encourage experimentation even of the present-day engineers. Leonardo designed flying machines and instruments of war, worked at practical theories and concepts in engineering and mathematics. I think that I decided to devote my life to engineering watching bright pictures of Leonardo’s sketches in one of the encyclopedias for kids. Leonardo was the first to design a glider in the history of humanity and that glider, designed in the fifteenth century, has much in common with a glider of the twenty-first century. Remarkably, the scientists used one of his designs of a glider in their experiment a few years ago. They followed Leonardo’s instructions exactly and the materials used were similar to those of Vinci’s times. The experiment was even more successful than the well-known Wright brothers’ flight, the glide flew longer than their pilot did. The first concept of the helicopter with an aerodynamic screw belongs to Da Vinci and Leonardo was the first to mention the idea of the parachute. And what impressed me most was an incident from Leonardo’s youth which he considered to be a destiny sign. He was a baby when a hawk flew down and sat on his cradle. He could form a phobia of birds but instead of it, he saw a positive message in the incident, pointing to his destiny to achieve a flight. I recollected that myth at different periods of my life and always tried to form the right attitude to the events and destiny signs. By the way, much of Vinci’s study on aerodynamics is based on his study of bird flight. It is hard to believe but he managed to describe the sources of lift as well as pressure drag in the technical language of the early sixteenth century.

Another great engineer who became my inspiration was Gustave Eiffel, whose name bears a famous tower of Paris, the unprecedented 300 meters height and 7000 tons weight structure, the symbol of Paris. The birth of this masterpiece was not an easy one. The petition with 300 names expressed the protest to the “monstrous” Eiffel tower. People thought it could interfere with the bird’s flight and contradict the whole architecture of the city. But whatever difficult its birth was, at the present moment the tower is admired by millions of tourists from all over the world and is accepted by the French citizens completely. The fact is that Gustave Eiffel interested me much more for his experiments in aerodynamics, which is my specialization. His contributions to experimental aerodynamics are remarkable; some of his experimental techniques are still used nowadays. In 1909 Eiffel designed and built a wind tunnel within the shadow of his tower that was a new type of tunnel, which became the prototype of the classic type, named the Eiffel-type tunnel. There he conducted the first wind-tunnel tests, using the models of the complete airplanes, showing the correspondence between the test results and the actual flight. A year after the beginning of the operation Eiffel published his first data of the wind-tunnel experiments in the work The Resistance of the Air and Aviation , which remains a masterpiece of experimental aerodynamics. It was Eiffel who coined two new terms that are used every day in aerodynamics and that I used in my work. These are the terms “wind tunnel” and “polar diagram”, the latter now transformed into “drag polars”, but the use of the word polar is due to Eiffel. Eiffel first proved the principle that a net lift on a body in a flow is the integrated effect of the pressure distributions over its surface. His wind-tunnel tests became a heart and a soul in the twenty-first-century researches, I was lucky to read some of his works in the original and must admit that they are really of great scientific value and I felt proud using some of his methods more than a century after his death there was no another genius to make the same contribution to aerodynamics since then.

One more engineering project that motivated me was Dr. Marilyn Smith’s research, which is our contemporary and together with her colleagues and students was working at the aircraft design, trying to make airplanes and helicopters less susceptible to damage from fatigue. I came across her project in the last year of my study and it impressed me greatly. They were trying to integrate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) applications with the structural equations of motion.

Incorporating the structural and aerodynamic equations of motion and CFD in the same computer code, she investigated the interaction between structure and fluid flow. Dr. Marilyn Smith was going to design a new type of aircraft, to incorporate acoustics into her research and to try to make the planes take-offs and landings more palatable to the ears of those who are on the ground. She made her biggest contribution to the study of aeroelasticity. These researches interested me greatly and I learned a lot about the results of their experiments, which were useful for me for my professional growth.

I started my career at Northrop Grumman Corporation , Pico Rivera in the position of an engineer, few years later it was the position of the leading engineer at the same company. That was my first experience, my responsibilities included CFD analyses, drag optimization, and stability estimation. I conducted several wind tunnel testings and made calculations for trade studies. At that time conducting the wind tunnel tests of advanced aerodynamic configurations I often remembered one of my icons, Eiffel, as it was he who contributed so much to the methodology of such tests and invented the word combination wind tunnel itself. And it was not that easy at his times as the science and technologies were not on that high level as they are at the moment, but still, he was single-minded and persevering. And I tried to do my best to make at least a small contribution to the researches connected with my profession, to which I devoted the whole of my life. The next place I am working at is Lockheed Martin Corporation, Palmdale, where I am in the position of an aeronautical engineer at the present moment. Here I am responsible for vehicle aerodynamic design and direct trade studies, the analysis of the wind tunnel testings, choice of the test program, and its updating due to the latest researches data. My functions are to analyze the aerodynamic data before the flight, to monitor the test data during the flight, and to analyze the simulation after the flight to verify some concrete aerodynamic models. I like the things I do very much, my everyday work is full of calculations, schemes and may seem monotonous and boring but I get satisfaction from what I am doing.

The engineer’s everyday reality is creating the artifacts of modern life and they can be found anywhere you look. Surely such brilliant scientists as Da Vinci, Eiffel are born once in several centuries, but such prominent researchers as Dr. Marilyn Smith are making their contribution into the general data storage today. Perhaps their work will be valued only by the next generations. Machines can replace a lot of other workers, but there are no such schemes and such mechanisms which could think logically and creatively at the same time, which could make our everyday life easier and bring comfort to our homes and making efforts to master the universe at the same time. The task of a good engineer is to find that balance: not only to dig into calculations and theoretical materials but manage to put them into practice, not only create something new, but not ruin the heritage of the past, to learn lots of laws, figures becoming a walking encyclopedia, but still being able to explain his inventions to ordinary people. They say that some of the engineer’s inventions can be used by engineers only. But, on the other hand, all the great inventions were not easily accepted by the audience, so it is up to an individual to decide whether his/her creations will be regarded as genius centuries ago or he/she would look like a strange professor, living in a separate world, far from reality and the surrounding.

I believe that every profession is important and valuable in its own way. It is only a question of how you feel doing this or that kind of job. Every personality is unique and nobody will give you universal advice. So, if you are a creative thinker, full of ideas for improving this world, enthusiasm to learn much and hard, you are welcome to become an engineer. But if you are not ready to devote every minute of your life to examining things and sometimes monotonous testing of the laws of nature, do not waste your time receiving a degree.

Why I want to be an engineer ? What are the characteristics of succesfull engineer? Through my high school life, I have watching my father was working as a contractor for his part time job other than his permanent job. I am so fascinated by his job and get intrigued by all civil engineering channels on television. As I am on my expedition to define myself, I also acknowledge the value of life and aspire to value everything that dwells within It. My drive as civil engineers triggers when my closest cousins succeded her career as civil engineer and working at JKR.

I have become more confidents to select this path as my career. There are many reasons for why I want to participate in becoming an engineer. My greatest anxiety for people Is their need for safety and comfort. Growing up In a safe neighborhood, I understand the importance of safety. Other than that, it's a job that pays a practically high income due to the level of skills and expertise required, and the ongoing responsibilities to ensure safe, accurate, and enduring engineering outcomes.

On the other hand, Clvll engineers can work in a diversity of work environments, including in the public sector, as contractors, consultants, or even as part of a firm hat undertakes work outsourced from municipalities and government. Was I Capable of Killing My Cat for Bad Behavior?

That I would consider doing this revealed me to myself in a way that still gives me pause.

One day in 1991, I thought about taking my healthy six-year-old cat to the ASPCA, where she would almost certainly have been “put down,” a.k.a. killed. I had adopted Suki when she was six months old and lived with her lovingly until a dramatic upheaval caused us to be (almost literally) at each other’s throats. After nearly two months of animosity, I’d reached a breaking point: She would have to go. That I would seriously consider doing this to a beloved pet revealed me to myself in a way that still gives me pause. It is remarkable how a relationship with an animal can do that.

I grew up having cats as pets, but I didn’t really own one as an adult until the age of 30; my circumstances were too unstable, and the few attempts I’d made as a teenager to adopt the cats that had shown up in my life didn’t end well. When I moved to Manhattan in my 20s and finally found a place to live, it was a tiny studio that I deemed too small for a cat to live in with any satisfaction. It would be, I thought, unfair to put an animal in that situation.

But then this cat showed up. One day in the spring of ’85, I was walking down 8th Street when I heard loud meowing — to my surprise, it seemed to be coming from a parked car surrounded by a small crowd of people who were looking under the body and the hood. As I came closer, someone said, “There it is!” before pulling from deep under the hood a limp, very shocked, loudly crying adolescent tabby cat. Because the driver of the car had no idea where the little cat had come from, because no one else volunteered, and because I lived close by, I offered to provide her with temporary shelter (plus vet care; her paws were burned) and find her a home. But the latter proved near impossible, and during the time it took to realize that, Suki and I had bonded. She was wonderfully intelligent, full of energy and play but also tenderness and desire for affection. And she seemed to be very comfortable in my studio.

Still, I adopted her with reservations in part because of my strange schedule; I often worked a graveyard shift that sometimes lasted 12 hours, and I couldn’t afford to turn down the work when it came. On the flip side, because the job was freelance, I would get several days off at a time. I thought it could work out.

And it did, sort of. When I could be there for her, Suki was happy enough — but as she grew bigger, the small space chafed, particularly during those long shifts. I would sometimes come home too exhausted to play with her for longer than 20 minutes or so, then lie in bed trying to sleep while she rocketed around the room and over my body, knocking stuff down, batting at my nose until I was so aggravated that I got up and yelled at her, then tossed her in the bathroom and closed the door.

To give her some variety, I let her roam in the hall when the super wasn’t around and tried taking her out for walks in a harness that she didn’t like. It was stressful, and I felt real guilt about frustrating her natural wants. One particularly awful time, I was especially desperate to sleep and she was especially desperate to charge around the room; I so lost my temper that I actually slapped her, causing her to race up into the space above my closet to hide. I got back into bed but couldn’t sleep because I felt wretched for hitting her. My wretchedness lasted for maybe five minutes before Suki came blasting down from her perch, charged back and forth over me, knocked something down, then jumped up on the bed, batted my nose and looked at me like, “Bitch, what are you gonna do about it?” I felt such admiration and delight that I laughed! I petted her, let her play with and bite my hand a little; after that, I guess she’d blown off enough steam to sleep because she lay down next to me as usual.

While it was rocky at times, there was respect and affection; we gave each other happiness. But it also felt like we were in an ongoing, often tense negotiation with each other regarding space and need. In this negotiation I certainly had the most power. But it would be a mistake to say that Suki, a remarkably strong-willed little creature, had none. I’m thinking of the time when I was so sick that I couldn’t get out of bed except to feed Suki or use the bathroom; during that time, she did not run around the room or swat my nose even once. She stayed next to me — until one morning when she sniffed me, realized the fever had broken, and smacked my nose, meaning, “Okay, ass out of bed.”

In 1987, I sold my first book, and we later moved to Marin County in California. The place was an in-law cottage that looked like a renovated barn. It was located in a beautiful canyon. It was at least three times as big as my studio had been, with sliding glass doors that opened onto a deck looking out into a ravine full of greenery and wildlife. Suki was very pleased — she made that plain with her ecstatic facial marking of every corner and her purring, full-bodied rubbing on my legs. I was cautious about letting her out at first, but when I finally did, her happiness was complete. Because I now worked at home, I was with her much more of the time, so in addition to the outdoors, she had more frequent playtimes with me. She no longer woke me up with frenetic racings around or attacked my nose. She also stopped getting the cystitis which had plagued her the entire four years we had lived in the Manhattan studio.

It was lovely and then — I made a mistake.

I had been thinking about getting a kitten, wondering if it would make Suki even happier or … not. Then one serendipitous afternoon, a woman walked up to me on the street with a cardboard box. She said she had found a kitten on the side of the road and couldn’t adopt it: Did I want it? This was obviously a sign! I brought the kitten — a tiny orange male — home on the spot.

Suki took one look at the newcomer and hated him. She never hurt the kitten, whom I named Honus, but she cursed at and menaced him constantly, rising above him with one paw ready to strike. She cursed at and menaced me constantly, not even allowing me to touch her. I wasn’t shocked by this. But I expected her to calm down eventually. And she might have if she’d had more time. In a few weeks, I was due to leave town for a professional trip for nearly a month. In the week before I left, I was encouraged to see her show some curiosity toward Honus; she also softened toward me, letting me pet her a little. Feeling optimistic, I arranged for a pet sitter named Barbara to stay at the house during my absence.

It went wrong almost immediately. With every call home I made, the situation seemed to have gotten worse. “I’m afraid of Suki,” said Barbara. “I’m afraid to get out of bed in the morning—she’s circling the bed like a shark.” I found this description so bizarre that I decided Barbara must be at fault. Then Suki began attacking Barbara, swiping at her legs.

I was about to get an early ticket home when there was another development: Barbara woke one morning to find that Suki’s face was horribly swollen. My poor cat had a tooth infection, meaning she’d been in pain for some time and needed surgery. Suki had to spend at least a week at the vet prior to and after the procedure; by the time she was ready to come home, I was due to arrive in a matter of days. Barbara reported that on her return the cat was subdued and unfriendly but not especially aggressive. I was relieved; I was also confident that with the infection gone and me present, all would eventually be well.

And at first, that seemed possible. When she’d left, Barbara had let Suki out, and I started calling her as soon as I emerged from the taxi. I didn’t have to wait long before she came bounding out of the underbrush like Lassie, rubbing against me, almost leaping into my arms. But as soon as we entered the house and she saw Honus, she began snarling. I quickly set her down; she glared at me with pure animal rage and bolted out the door.

She did not come in again until mealtime, when she scarfed her food, snarled at me, snarled at Honus, and bolted out again. When she came back in for breakfast, I tried to sweet-talk her, by which I mean I attempted to sit with her and tell her how much I loved her and wanted this to work out. But she would not sit with me, so instead I followed her around, futilely declaring my good intentions while she either ignored me or growled. When I tried to make her sit still and listen, she swiped at me and drew blood. Meanwhile Honus was delightful, playing with me and cuddling by day, sleeping close to me at night. It became easy for me to just about ignore Suki except to let her in and feed her, then let her out where she stayed all night.

One night, during a thunderstorm, my conscience woke; like many animals, Suki was afraid of storms, so I put my boots on, got an umbrella, and went out to call her. I found her sheltering under my neighbor’s car. For several moments I crouched there, entreating her to come in. She stayed put, hissing at me. After that night, I tried keeping her in again; she reacted by attacking me, actually charging me and swiping with her front paws — and sometimes she connected. Her fury was several times bigger than her body, and I was becoming angry in response — very angry. The last time she struck out at me, I got down on the floor and said to her, “If you hurt me, I will kill you. I don’t want to do that. But if you really hurt me, I am going to kill you.” She could not have understood my words, but I am sure she understood my message. She flattened her ears against her head and, pupils dilated, hissed with teeth fully exposed as if to say, “If I could, I would kill you right now” and then went for the door. I opened it for her.

Around this time, I called the vet and asked him if he thought there was anything I could do to improve the situation. He told me that the only way was to remove the kitten — or Suki. He said Suki had probably developed the tooth infection right around the time Honus arrived and that the stress of my leaving had likely made it much worse; he thought she had associated the increasingly terrible pain and the disruption of her home with the kitten and that there was no way to reverse that.

I had to choose between an enraged middle-aged cat who hated me versus an adorable kitten who loved me or at least acted that way. The more I thought about it, the more natural it seemed to … end the misery. I couldn’t believe what I was thinking of doing: taking Suki to the ASPCA, where she would almost certainly die. I remember saying to someone, “If a person acted toward me the way that Suki has, I wouldn’t tolerate them in my home either.” Of course the person said, “Yes, but you wouldn’t have them killed.” And I wouldn’t, not only because I couldn’t (at least not legally) but because for most people (and for me) to essentially kill a member of our own species is a profoundly wrong act that not many of us are going to commit just because we don’t like certain behavior.

But an animal is in another category. Since infancy, we are brought up to see them as less valuable than we are even if we love them; in that way we are very like … other animals. Animals generally prefer their own species. How often does an animal feel morally compelled to show a weaker species consideration? No natural predator hesitates, when hungry, to kill another species for food or, in the case of cats, for pleasure. Part of the reason we feel superior is our very real capacity to choose to act differently. But our connection with animals reminds us of that more fundamental, less moral way of being. As predator or prey, animals are always closer to the reality of killing than we are, and on a very subliminal level, their proximity brings us closer too.

None of that made what I was contemplating any less cruel. What pulled me back from the brink of this awful choice was not an appeal to abstract ethics. It was an appeal to my own well-being — which I’d somehow forgotten was linked to Suki’s. I told a close friend that I had just about made up my mind to take my old cat to the ASPCA for being too mean. She was silent for a long moment. She said, “I hope you reconsider. You’re really mad at Suki right now, but you love her. If you take her there and she’s put down, I don’t think you’re going to be able to live with yourself.”

As soon as she said it, I knew she was right; it was as if her words awakened me from a trance of ruthlessness. At first, I was not happy about it. My decision was made easier when Barbara said she would love to adopt Honus. Miserably, I removed his food dishes; miserably, I vacuumed his fur off the rug. When dinnertime came, I let Suki in. The house probably still reeked of Honus, and she didn’t behave very differently at first. But slowly she realized the intruder was gone. On our first evening, she didn’t demand to go outside; she didn’t sleep with me or show me any affection, but she didn’t hiss or snarl either. I didn’t try to pet her; I watched and waited to see what she would do.

The next evening I found out. She had just eaten and had not asked to go outside. I was sitting on the couch watching TV. For the first time in maybe two months, she jumped onto the couch with me. I said, “Hi, Suki.” She groomed herself for a few minutes. And then she languorously stretched her body and came into my lap. To my delight, she responded to my petting with unreserved purring. Our bodies synced and relaxed; she soon fell deeply asleep as I blissfully watched the tube. At one point some unexpected noise woke her with a start; she looked up at me with an expression of great relief. She then put her head back down, sighed, and stretched her forepaw out on my leg, gripping my pants with her claws as if to say, “Mine. All mine.” It was true. Honus was a lovely kitten, but Suki was my cat and I was her person. Regardless of who had more power, our well-being was inextricably linked. In some impossible-to-define psychic sense, we were, at that moment, equal.
