About SWAYAM

SWAYAM is a programme initiated by Government of India and designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality. The objective of this effort is to take the best teaching learning resources to all, including the most disadvantaged. SWAYAM seeks to bridge the digital divide for students who have hitherto remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to join the mainstream of the knowledge economy.

This is done through a platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in classrooms from Class 9 till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to any learner. More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the country have participated in preparing these courses.

The courses hosted on SWAYAM are in 4 quadrants – (1) video lecture, (2) specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed (3) self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and (4) an online discussion forum for clearing the doubts. Steps have been taken to enrich the learning experience by using audio-video and multi-media and state of the art pedagogy / technology.

Is there any problems with submitting assignments late?

I have joined 2 courses because my college asked me to. But I did not do it, and missed 3 weeks of assignments. I am currently on 4th week. Can I submit those assignments now. Is there any problems caused by late submissions? Like low marks and such.

NPTEL (Swayam) Course Examination Experience

NPTEL is an acronym for National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning which is an initiative by seven Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) for creating course contents in engineering and science.

Many students who dream of attending scholarly institutions, through NPTEL will have access to quality content from them.

There are courses on multiple streams both technical and non-technical. The courses are for 4 weeks, 8 weeks and 12 weeks usually.

I have taken many courses on NPTEL up until now but have taken exams for the following courses.

  • An introduction to programming through: C++ 12 Weeks (by Professor Abhiram G Ranade)
  • Programming in Java: 12 Weeks (by Professor Debasis Samanta)
  • Data structures and algorithms using Java: 12 Weeks (by prof Debasis Samanta)

Introduction to programming through C++: The procedures for all the examinations were similar, here I will be talking about “An introduction to Programming through C++”

  • The 12-week course was taught by Prof. Abhiram G. Ranade of the Computer Science and Engineering department at IIT Bombay.
  • It is a core undergraduate course where each week new topics were covered very thoroughly. Each week has assignments consisting of 5 coding questions and 10 MCQs of that week’s subject.
  • About the 10th-week applications for exams will be opened, and we will be asked to select our examination centers. The course is free to enroll but a fee of 1000/- is to be paid for the exam.
  • Prior exams we will be notified to download hall tickets and should take a physical copy of it and an identity card along with us to the exam hall.
  • The exam is for 3 hours, each of us will be assigned an individual computer. Exam will have mostly MCQs depending on the course and is for 100 marks. The questions are ranged from easy to hard and everything will be by the course itself.

Criteria to get a Certificate:

  • Average assignment score = 25% of the average of best 8 assignments out of the total 12 assignments given in the course.
  • Exam score = 75% of the proctored certification exam score out of 100
  • Final score = Average assignment score + Exam score

You will be eligible for the certificate only if Average Assignment Score >= 10/25 & Exam score>= 30/75

An e certificate will be provided after the results are announced and the criteria’s fulfilled

NPTEL SELF PACED COURSES

National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL), implemented using information and communication technology (ICT), is India’s largest technical dissemination program involving seven IITs (Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras and Roorkee) and IISc, Bengaluru. Together, several web and video-based materials for science and engineering courses have been developed.

NPTEL courses are used extensively by faculty members and students across the world to further their knowledge on various subjects in different disciplines. The courses developed for NPTEL can be viewed at http://nptel.ac.in and on YouTube (as a separate channel, at http://www.youtube.com/iit

NPTEL is launching the new portal NPTEL+ to expand the variety of offerings and courses for learner upskilling. 3 types of training programs are proposed currently:

1. NPTEL courses in self paced mode

(NPTEL) is now offering self-paced courses where learners may progress through the course and complete assignments at their own pace. Once a learner joins these courses, they may watch video lectures, and complete assignments as per their convenience. Learners may also choose to write a remote proctored online exam from the comfort of their homes and earn a certificate.

2. Short term training programs from the IITs/IISc

Short term training programs which might involve fully live lectures coupled with hands-on training or a blended mode of learning (recorded videos+live lectures) are planned to be offered. These would primarily be by the faculty of various IITs, IISc, etc and would be on fixed dates with fixed timings for the sessions.

3. Other programs

These programs include courses from institutes/organizations that are partnering with NPTEL. The contents are targeted towards specialised courses in an emerging technology or complementing the existing NPTEL courses with dedicated hands on content to equip the learners to be industry ready.
