In February 2014, I asked my subscribers for their favorite math puzzle. This collection is the result—a list of puzzles chosen by teachers and parents! Most only require the four basic operations or not even that, so they work well for elementary school children and on up. I have divide the puzzles into ones that are geometric in nature and ones that are math & logic puzzles. The are on their own page. I also list several good puzzle websites and books at the bottom of this page.

Puzzles with shapes and sticks

This is for you kindergarten folks—a coloring Sudoku game! The stars in the same row and column must have different colors.

Move three sticks and make the fish to swim in the opposite direction. You can see the solution and play an at Puzzles.com (and many others too!). He needed some walls for another project so he rearranged the pins like this: He then found out he need 7 more wall pieces to finish his project. How did he rearrange the pens so that there was only 1 pig per pen?

Move only three coins and turn the triangle upside down. , but not before you've thought about it!

  • Tower of Hanoi Tower of Hanoi is an old favorite puzzle where you move disks from one tower to another. If you've never played, try this online version . You can either play it yourself, or let the computer solve it.
  • Trees in rows A gardener planted 10 trees in five rows. Each row had four trees in it. How did he do this? Click here for the answer , but don't peek too early—give it a good honest try first!

So, Kenken is an excellent game to practice the four operations and logical thinking. Lower elementary children can use addition/subtraction and others can use multiplication/division or all four operations.

Play Kenken online here . You can choose the size of the game, operations, and the difficulty level.

Download 5x5 Kakuro puzzles at KrazyDad. Other sizes exist also.

  • Same number - or twice as many Here is a puzzle that seems simple, but is a good critical thinking challenge for lower elementary school kids. You can easily reword it for example to have two flocks of birds in two trees. Farmer Brown and Farmer Green were ruminating one day on the fence between their farms. Farmer Brown says, "You know I was just thinking. If you gave me one of your cows, then we would have the same number of cows." Farmer Green replies, "If you gave me one of your cows, then I would have twice as many as you!" How many cows does Farmer Brown have and how many cows does Farmer Green have? Click here for the answer Farmer Brown has five and Farmer Green has seven cows. Hide answer
  • More than two animals This puzzle is from Grace Church School's collection of Abacus problems 2013-2014 for grades 3-8. The site does not supply the answers, but students are encouraged to submit their answers and they will receive a reply. I have more than two animals at home. All of them are dogs, except for two. All of them are cats, except for two. All of them are hamsters, except for two. What kinds of animals and how many of each animal do I have? See the answer I have three animals: one dog, one cat, and one hamster. Hide answer
  • Brick's weight This is well-known problem that sounds so simple, yet it fools many people! A brick weighs one kilogram plus half of the brick. What is the weight of one brick? Here is the answer It weighs 2 kg. Since a brick weighs 1 kg + half of a brick, the 1 kg gives us the weight of the other half of the brick. Since half a brick weighs 1 kg, the brick weighs 2 kg. Many people incorrectly answer 1 1/2 kg. Hide answer
  • Average Miles per Hour A car is going up a hill. The hill is one mile long. The driver goes up the hill at an average speed of 30 miles per hour. When the driver reaches the top of the hill, he starts down the other side. The downhill side is also one mile long. How fast must the driver go down the hill in order to average 60 miles per hour? Solution It is impossible to average 60 miles per hour. An average speed of 60 miles per hour requires two minutes to cover two miles. The first mile was covered at 30 miles per hour. This means that two minutes were used to travel that mile. Hence there are no minutes left to cover the second mile. • There are 7 × 7 × 7 = 343 large cats. They have 343 × 4 = 1372 legs.
  • There are 7 × 7 × 7 × 7 = 2401 little cats. They have 2401 × 4 = 9604 legs.
  • There are 7 girls. They have 14 legs.
  • How can these be equal? Here's a short but puzzling puzzle that someone sent for the contest: In which meaning 1070 = 1110 ? See the answer 10 hours 70 minutes equals 11 hours 10 minutes. Hide answer
  • Coconut trader An intelligent trader travels from 1 place to another carrying 3 sacks having 30 coconuts each.No sack can hold more than 30 coconuts. On the way he passes through 30 checkpoints and on each checkpoint he has to give 1 coconut for each sack he is carrying. How many coconuts are left in the end? Solution There are 25 coconuts left. He will give out 3 coconuts at each of the first 10 checkpoints and empty his first bag. He has two sacks left. Then he gives out 2 cocounts at each of the next 15 checkpoints, emptying his second bag. Then he has one bag of coconuts left and only 5 checkpoints to go, which means he gives out 5 coconuts from the last bag and is left with 25 coconuts. Hide answer
  • Fill the 5-liter container.
  • Pour out from the 5-liter container to the 3-liter one until it's full. The 5-liter container now has 2 liters left.
  • Pour all the milk from the 3-liter container back to the 8-liter container.
  • Pour the 2 liters from the 5-liter container to the 3-liter container. It has therefore just one liter of space left!
  • Pour out from the 5-liter container enough milk to fill the 3-liter container (which already has 2 liters). You will have 4 liters left in the 5-liter container.
  • Farmer and his ducks A farmer was asked how many ducks he had. "Well," he said, "they ran down the path just now and I saw one duck in front of two ducks, a duck behind two ducks, and a duck between two ducks." How many ducks were there? Solution There are three ducks, one in front of another. Hide answer

Fun Maths Activities and Investigations for KS1 and KS2 in Primary School

Anantha Anilkumar

Over the years, we’ve created lots of different fun maths activities and investigations to add to primary teachers’ toolboxes. Some of these maths activities mirror our online one to one maths tutoring programme, while others are more suitable for whole class teaching. We share here as part of our continual support for KS1 and KS2 teachers working in UK classrooms.

The purpose of these numeracy activities, especially the event-based ones, is three-fold:

1. To support you, the teacher, with problem solving and reasoning questions (with answers) and save you writing your own.

2. To give learners the opportunity to see more everyday maths in context, and experiences of how maths reasoning really matters in the real world. 3. To add some variety and relevance to the maths lesson slides, questions and worksheets you may be doing with your class every day. We love what the White Rose maths hub resources provide in terms of weekly planning, but sometimes we may be looking for some more exciting, hands-on and fun maths activities, whether for Year 1 or Year 6.

Topical Maths Activities For The Term

Topical Maths Activities For The Term

Maths investigations linked to key calendar dates this term, designed to develop reasoning and problem solving in your pupils

Some of you may question the place that fun has in a child’s education , and whether fun maths lessons will achieve the long term goal of retention and retrieval. While we’ve all had a class which requires an upbeat tempo of fun games as part of their learning process, many children will experience cognitive overload if important new maths concepts are introduced through a game. You will know your pupils best in this context.

The majority of maths activities and investigations shared below use a fun concept or relevant idea to develop children’s number sense, fluency, reasoning and problem solving skills in the pursuit of learning maths.

Follow the links below to find out more about the kind of maths activities and maths investigations we’ve got available to you.

Fun maths activities KS2 (with some KS1 in there too)

Fun outdoor maths activities 13 flexible and fun activities to do outside, many of which can be adapted for early years to Year 6; most of these involve some kind of physical activity and fine motor skill development, as well as treasure hunts for angles, ways to incorporate data handling, graphs and measurement into the school fair, and using mathematical skills to make mathematical connections to nature.

Fun back to school maths activities teaching ideas to help you get back in the groove of maths lessons after a long summer break. Fun end of term maths activities : We all know that by the end of the summer term the atmosphere in class tends to get a bit overexcitable. Here are some ideas to harness that excitement into some fun and lively maths investigations that recap children’s knowledge from across their year’s work from 2d shapes to averages and algebra.

Fun maths games for kids at home : This might almost be our favourite collection – one to hand out to parents for homework and homeschool; it includes home-made board games, fun ways to practise times tables and lost of fun games that help children with their maths skills and require only a pencil, a piece of paper and a pack of playing cards to get going. Essential for anyone undertaking any kind of home learning with their children.

Fun SATs revision games : Even 11-year-olds need a break sometimes, so we asked some fantastic teachers on Twitter what their favourite top tips for keeping SATs revision fun were, and here’s your answer – loads of great ideas in here for anyone teaching Year 6 .  Fun maths club activities : Provided you’re armed with some creative, open ended, and ideally practical maths club activities to give children, maths clubs are not nearly as hard to set up and run as you might first imagine. The benefits are manifold; this article has all you need to get started including several really fun group games specially designed for primary school maths clubs.

Fun maths investigations for topical events

KS2 maths investigations : For many years now, Third Space has been creating maths investigations for Year 6. We’ve now adapted them to be suitable across KS2. In the main, these tend to be open ended maths investigations, focused around key events in the primary school calendar. Some of these are also slightly shorter activities but they all require pupils to do extensive problem solving and reasoning based around events in everyday life. Here are some favourite KS2 maths problems solving investigations from each term:

The communist government aimed to create a fair way of life for everyone, not just the rich ruling class. By 1929, however, a general called Joseph Stalin had seized power and imposed lots of new rules on the people, causing huge suffering. In World War II the Russians fought against Nazi Germany and millions of Russians were killed in the fighting.

In 1945 the USSR became one of the world's superpowers. In the following decades the USSR and the United States of America were on opposite sides in many conflicts; this is known as the Cold War.

In 1989 the communist regime fell; two years later the USSR split into 15 independent countries (the Russian Federation).

The Tudors for kids KS2

The Tudors for kids KS2 learning at Primary School. Homework help on the history of the Tudors, Tudor Britain and Henry VIII.

Time: 1485AD - 1603AD

Who were the Tudors?

The Tudors are one of the most famous families ever to rule England. They were in power from 1485 when Henry Tudor was crowned King Henry VII, until the time Queen Elizabeth I died, without an heir, in 1603. The Tudors were some of the most colourful people in history.

Tudor Kings and Queens

There were six Tudor Kings and Queens.

  • Henry VII - 1485-1509
  • Henry VIII - 1509-1547
  • Edward VI - 1547-1553
  • Jane Grey - July 1553
  • Mary I - 1553-1558
  • Elizabeth I - 1558-1603

Horrible Histories - Terrible Tudors

Tudors video

He had six wives:

  • Catherine of Aragon - Catherine had a daughter with Henry, but no son so Henry divorced her.
  • Anne Boleyn - Anne had a daughter (who would be Queen Elizabeth I) with Henry, but Henry turned against his wife and had her head chopped off.
  • Jane Seymour - They had a son, Edward (who was the next King) but she died two weeks after he was born.
  • Anne of Cleves - Henry divorced Anne after only six months.
  • Catherine Howard - Catherine was only 19 when they married. Henry had her head chopped off.
  • Katherine Parr - She looked after Henry's children.

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth I

Elizabeth had a quick temper and liked to get her own way. She liked to live in fine palaces in London and it was an exciting time when she ruled. There were a lot of new discoveries during her time and many English explorers sailed off to find new lands.

Unlike Henry VIII, Elizabeth I never married and as she grew older people wondered who would be next Tudor to take over. So when she died on 24th March 1603, the Tudor period ended and the next in line to the throne was James VI of Scotland who became King and started the Stuarts period.

Tudor Britain

Although Elizabethan England was very rich, there were many poor people who had to beg for a living. In 1563 a Poor Law was passed so that money could be raised for the less fortunate ones.

In 1588 King Philip II of Spain, angry that the English were raiding Spanish ships and stealing their treasures, sent a fleet of ships (The Spanish Armada), to invade England. They planned to sail to the Netherlands to join with an army, but while sailing through the English Channel, they were attacked by English warships. Fierce sea battles took place and during one night, while the Spanish ships were anchored near France, the English sent eight ships that had been set on fire, into the middle of the Spanish ships. The Spanish panicked and scattered all over the place.

The next day battle raged all day but the English, in the end, won.

What happened to the Spanish Armada?

Having been blown north around Scotland and Ireland, most of the Spanish ships were wrecked in terrible storms.

Home Learning Ideas, Activities and Guides For Primary and Secondary School Teachers

Sophie Bessemer

Home learning can be challenging. Here, you’ll find links to all the home learning maths support available for schools from Third Space Learning. Originally created during the Covid-19 pandemic, it’s still available for schools to provide to pupils and their families during any other school closures.

Here’s how Third Space Learning can support home learning:

  • Our  one to one maths tuition continues to run for children in school
  • If you are registered for our  maths hub  (it’s free for teachers and parents to register) you can access a range of  free downloadable  maths resources   all created to help practise and revise the essential maths skills that children in Years 1 to 6 need. Look out for the home learning section.
  • As well as the widely read articles for teachers and school leaders on the  Third Space Learning blog  we have added many articles designed to help demystify the maths curriculum and provide as much help and  home learning ideas  as possible for those supporting their children with maths at home. These are all linked from this page.

We’ve been supporting schools with online one to one tuition for over 10 years now, helping to raise attainment in maths across over 150,000 pupils.

Here at Third Space Learning, we have online virtual lessons created by a team of maths pedagogy experts that are regularly quality-assured to meet the needs of students.

Our one-to-one maths programmes take place online with tutor support in schools. To raise attainment across the school, not only among those pupils receiving one-to-one tuition , schools additionally have premium access to our Maths Hub, home to hundreds of quality teaching resources and CPD.

In this blog, we’ve brought together a collection of guides, advice, tips and additional teaching resources that you can share with parents to continue pupils’ learning at home, or fill in any learning gaps as needed.

How to use these home learning ideas and activities

When it comes to home learning, as any Headteacher or Senior Leader knows, it’s not enough to just provide an online learning equivalent. Not only does the quality and quantity of online devices and computers at home vary hugely, but parents will also have varying capacities in their time or confidence to keep children going.

So, to help your parents get the most of the free resources we know you will be providing them with, we’ve brought together the following collection of guides, advice, tips and additional teaching resources, all centred around teaching maths. Every blog post contains ideas to keep children busy and engaged in maths at home and they’ve all been written with parents in mind.

We recommend adding a link to this page on your own school website to provide another source of support and guidance for parents on their home learning journey.

Free Home Learning Packs

If you’re a class teacher or parent looking for education resources specifically to help children with maths at home take a look at this list of all free home learning packs available to you.

These are online resources all available to use at home, with a range of free activities and lesson plans included in them. They’re ideal for homeschooling young people aged 5 to 12.

Why it’s all about maths All our tutors are maths specialists, our one to one tuition lessons tackle every topic in the primary maths curriculum and we confidently believe that our maths resources are the best available for schools and parents. However we aren’t yet English teaching specialists so you won’t find any English, PSHE or other subjects here. For them we recommend you seek out other high quality providers – BBC Bitesize is often a good starting point.

Home Learning Maths Curriculum Guides For Parents

As with teachers there’s a vast range in what parents already know about the primary maths curriculum and the transition to secondary maths. We’ve created these home learning toolkits as practical information guides to hand to parents and carers with children studying maths at school. Each one breaks down what the curriculum expects from learners in maths for each year group and then how parents can help support their children through it.

Maths Homework: What Parents Should Know

You may be surprised both by how much parents know about some aspects (ask them about partitioning!) and occasionally by how little (who knew the difference between area and perimeter was so tricky to grasp?). The following guides break down all parents need to know about the major topics at primary school that children struggle with. They are designed so parent and child can work through them together at their own pace as part of their home learning work on maths at home .

  • How To Teach Your Child To Learn Times Tables At Home
  • How To Teach Your Child To Learn Fractions At Home
  • How To Help Your Child When Comparing Fractions, Decimals, And Percentages
  • How To Teach Your Child To Learn Short Division and Long Division At Home

And if this still isn’t enough we’ve also brought together a list of our top free maths homework sites and apps

Inspiring A Love of Maths: Why Maths Is Important

Parents as we know are their children’s first influencers and can have an enormous effect on how much children enjoy and even achieve in maths. Here at Third Space Learning, we love maths, we know how important it is and we believe everyone can do it.

But it’s completely normal for some children to struggle, some children to think they hate it, and some even to develop maths anxiety .

The article Why is Maths Important points you to lots of useful information and ideas on how to build up children’s resilience and improve both their attitude to maths and their ability to learn maths, covering topics such as growth mindset and metacognition along the way.

Home Learning Maths Games

As educators, we know it’s not all about fun but, when you’re trying to keep spirits high, injecting a bit of fun into maths at home doesn’t go amiss so keep a look out for our games and activities blogs.

First we’ve got 35 brilliant times tables games to lighten up what can be a bit of a laborious but essential journey to mastering times tables . Then we’ve also collected together our favourite free maths games to do at home just in time for home learning – all you’ll need is a paper and pen, and for some of them, a die or a pack of cards. Hours of fantastic maths fun and it doesn’t even need to stop when you have to go on a journey. We’ve included some activities for car journeys too!

We’re also adding to our collections with free KS2 maths games , KS1 maths games and KS3 maths games for all maths topics.

Primary Maths Curriculum Knowledge Buster

Much of the primary maths curriculum will be new to parents compared with how they were taught, and the terminology may flummox or confuse, so we’d encourage you to point them to our free Primary Maths Dictionary for Kids , deliberately created to help explain some of the trickier and more unusual terms.

All the key terms parents will come across from partitioning to perimeter are included in a dictionary format and then where needed, we provide links to additional guidance such as on BODMAS (or BIDMAS), square numbers , regular and irregular shapes and our favourite, maths word problems .

Each of the additional articles are tackled in a ‘What is’ format, suitable for KS1 and KS2 parents with sample questions and answers and how they are used in the primary maths curriculum. A bit like you’re likely to find on the knowledge organisers your school will hand out to show what children need to learn about a topic.

Topics covered like this so far include:

  • What Is The Highest Common Factor
  • What Is A Venn Diagram
  • What Are Lowest Common Multiples
  • What Is Place Value
  • What Is A Unit Fraction
  • What Is A Line Of Symmetry: Symmetrical Shapes Explained For Primary Parents And Kids
  • What Is A Number Sentence: Explained For Primary Parents And Kids!
  • What Is The Highest Common Factor: Explained For Primary Parents And Kids
  • What Is A Prime Number?
  • What Is Partitioning?
  • What Is The 12 Hour And 24 Hour Clock?
  • What Are Equivalent Fractions
  • What Are Concrete Resources

We’re adding to this primary maths dictionary all the time but if we don’t cover it and you need us to, just get in touch [email protected] and we’ll write it for you! We’re open to requests from teachers as well as parents – it’s all valuable CPD.

Home Learning and Primary School Homework

Never will parents have such respect for teachers as they will after 48 hours of home learning. The principles of home learning apply equally to managing children’s homework in ordinary times. Wherever you sit on the homework debate and whether it’s necessary at primary school, most schools still subscribe to some degree of learning taking place at home, whether that’s phonics, weekly spellings, or daily Times Tables Rockstars.

Use our primary homework help guide for parents to understand what you need to know and how to embed good habits and routines in school homework – look out for top tips and hacks from parents with experience.

KS1 And KS2 SATs For Parents

Every year we give over 7,000 pupils online maths interventions to support them for their Key Stage 2 SATs . During Covid, SATs were cancelled but now that SATs are back , parents may find some of the tips and information helpful at this time. Plenty of the teaching content and revision techniques are applicable for Year 6 as a whole, not just the end of year assessments. Here is everything parents need to know about the KS1 and KS2 SATs .

We hope this blog helps in some way to support schools and families. Third Space Learning will be operating as usual through the crisis and we’re setting up all children to continue to receive their 1-to-1 maths intervention programmes from home.

Get in touch at [email protected] or on twitter or facebook if you need any support in maths, want to set up your own pupils with interactive one to one maths lessons or just generally fancy a chat. We’re always around!

DO YOU HAVE STUDENTS WHO NEED MORE SUPPORT IN MATHS?

Every week Third Space Learning’s maths specialist tutors support thousands of students across hundreds of schools with weekly one to one tuition designed to plug gaps and boost progress.

Since 2013 these personalised one to one lessons have helped over 169,000 primary and secondary students become more confident, able mathematicians.

Learn how pupils make accelerated progress or request a personalised quote for your school to speak to us about your school’s needs and how we can help.

Primary Homework Help
The Vikings

by Mandy Barrow

The Viking Age in Britain began about 1,200 years ago in the 9th Century AD and lasted for just over 200 years.

About the year 800, bands of fierce raiders began to attack our coasts. They were the Vikings (also called the Danes although they didn't just come from Denmark. See below).

The Vikings came across the North Sea, just as the Anglo-Saxons had done 400 years earlier. In time, like the , the Vikings made their home here. They drove the Saxons out of part of the country and took it for themselves.

King Alfred, Saxon king of Wessex, fought them in a great battle, but he could not drive them right away and had to let them have part of the country, called Danelaw.

did the Vikings come from? were the Vikings? did they invade Britain? did the Vikings invade Britain? in Britain? did the Vikings follow? like? like?

Best home learning websites for kids

Using websites to support home learning

The pandemic had a huge impact on learning at home and increased the amount of incredible educational help online.   It can be difficult, however, to sift through the thousands of online learning resources to find the right ones for your child.   ‘It’s worth taking some time to look at what a particular website is offering,’ says Bobby Seagull, maths teacher, half of BBC duo Monkman and Seagull , and spokesperson for Explore Learning.    ‘Is it linked to the school curriculum , or does it offer tangential but interesting learning? Both are good and can complement each other.'   As well as keeping up the momentum with maths and English, it’s important to support your child's learning in different ways, including creative subjects, physical activity and learning through play.   ‘Children need a variety of subjects to help them develop a broader appreciation of the wonderful world of knowledge out there,’ Bobby explains. ‘This is a chance for them to learn new things that they might not have done before.’   Tapping into diverse resources – from worksheets to tutorials to YouTube videos – will also keep your child engaged so they don’t lose interest in learning.

Need a little help?

It’s important to give our kids lots of different learning experiences, but we also need to help them keep moving with literacy and maths. Lots of families will also be preparing for their child to take the 11+ in the autumn: we've rounded up the latest information about revised 11+ dates in each area.   While some of us may have grown in confidence with home learning, others might still feel out of their comfort zone when supporting their children with maths and English. This is where online tutoring can help.   ‘Using an online tutor can help take the pressure off you by giving your child time with someone who’s knowledgeable in a particular area,’ explains Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning. ‘It will give your child the chance to be stretched in a subject that they excel in, or develop in an area they find more challenging.’   Online tutoring isn’t passive learning, where your child sits at a screen and is expected to work through endless questions and tasks. Rather, it calls on them to be engaged and independent  (as well as offering you the reassurance that they are working through a structured set of resources).   ‘When we’re teaching a new concept, we get children to teach it back to us, so we know they understand,’ says Charlotte.   ‘We focus a lot on how children are learning, not just what they’re learning, and establishing these great learning habits allows them to embrace learning in any scenario.’   Whether your child is preparing for entrance exams or home learning, one-to-one online tutoring is a great way to provide structure and help them focus on key skills, but you can supplement it with online resources to make learning fun and varied.   To help you out, we’ve rounded up our 12 favourite online resources that’ll keep your child’s learning on track.

Best for reading scheme books

Oxford Owl eBook Library

Oxford Owl eBook Library

If your child's progress with their school  reading scheme has declined, you can get them back on track thanks to the brilliant ebooks from leading educational publisher Oxford University Press.   The virtual library is stocked with books for primary school children of all reading levels, including books from reading schemes like Biff and Chip and Read Write Inc Phonics. There are also books for independent reading.   Once you’ve registered, you can search by age, reading level, book type and series to find the best titles to help your child make progress with their reading at home.

Best for one-to-one tuition

Explore Learning: Explore at Home

Explore Learning: Explore at Home

Explore Learning is renowned for helping children aged 4-14 learn through its Explore at Home one-to-one tutoring: brilliant if your child needs a little help to get back on track, or is preparing for the 11+ or other important exam.   When you sign up for Explore at Home, your child’s personal expert tutor will devise a bespoke programme tailored to their age and stage, aligned with the primary curriculum.   Your child will have a weekly one-to-one online session with a qualified centre tutor (the sessions can be delivered from any device, including mobile and tablets); learning will happen through a split screen and feedback will be provided to both you and your child at the end.   Your child’s progress is tracked so their tutor can identify their strengths and weaknesses and support them with the areas they find difficult, plus they'll have unlimited online access to an individualised online learning programme, with downloadable educational resources and worksheets, so they can work on their maths and English skills from home. Explore Learning is offering a free trial of Explore at Home so you can decide if it would be right for you and your child.

Best for demystifying primary school jargon

TheSchoolRun

TheSchoolRun.com

One of the trickiest things about supporting your child’s home learning is making sense of what they’re learning at school. Many of the terms they use are unfamiliar ( fronted adverbials , anyone?), which is where TheSchoolRun comes in.   The comprehensive primary school glossaries – English , grammar, maths , science and computing – explain every bit of terminology you need to know, with examples, step-by-step explanations and teachers’ tips to help you support your child.   We also have hundreds of free Homework Gnome resources to help your child with all those primary school history, geography, science and RE topics, each packed with facts, trivia, images, videos and links to further info: just what you need if your child has been given a homework project and doesn’t know where to start.

Best for book recommendations

Toppsta

Whether your child is happiest with their nose in a book or needs encouragement to read , Toppsta is packed with inspiring ideas to support reading for pleasure.   The website is full of book recommendations for children aged 0 to 14, with reader reviews , book lists for different ages, stages and subjects, featured books, giveaways and inspiring ideas to help your child enjoy reading.

Best for library lovers

Local library access at home

Your local library

If you have a library card, you can borrow a vast range of children’s and young adult ebooks and audiobooks from your local library to read or listen to on a tablet or phone using apps like Libby , Borrowbox , PressReader and rbdigital . Visit your library’s website to find out which app it uses.   You can also access a wide range of online reference books to support your child’s homework projects, as well as newspapers and magazines to give them a grounding in reading non-fiction and current affairs .

Best for daily lessons

BBC Bitesize Daily

BBC Bitesize

BBC Bitesize has a huge range of online lessons in English and maths, tailored to your child’s key stage. You can use these to supplement what your child is learning at school, or to keep them learning if they're off school for any reason.   There are also videos, quizzes and podcasts to make learning fun, plus educational programmes on iPlayer and the red button.

Best for maths games

Topmarks

Children learn best if they’re enjoying themselves, which is why we love Topmarks: a website full of fantastic maths games for children aged three to 14.   The games are grouped by age, and you can also pick a particular category for your child to focus on, like place value , money maths , shapes and problem-solving. Games include Place Value Basketball, Rocket Rounding, and Number Patterns.   Many of the games are tablet-friendly, while others use Flash and so need to be played on a computer or laptop. There are also parents’ resources to give you ideas for improving your child’s maths skills, for example learning through cooking.

Best coding website

Blockly Games

Blockly Games

Blockly Games introduces children to the basics of computer coding through interactive games.   Blockly is a programming language that works by stacking blocks together, a bit like a jigsaw. These blocks are used to create chunks of code that can then be converted into professional text code.   Blockly Games helps children get to grips with coding through games, puzzles and activities like making an animated character, writing instructions for a maze, and composing music using simple commands. This helps them understand key principles of coding like sequences, conditionals and loops.

Best for play ideas

Make Time 2 Play

Make Time 2 Play

Learning isn’t all about sitting at the table with pencil and paper; there’s a lot that kids can learn through play, too. Why not have a look at Make Time 2 Play? It has over 450 play ideas for primary school children and younger that can be played online or downloaded to a tablet or phone. You can search by age, the number of children participating, the duration of the game and the particular benefits.   There’s a great selection of activities including arts and crafts, physical challenges and imaginative play, many of which you can do in the home and garden.

Best for KS3

Home Learning Timetable

Home Learning Timetable

It’s natural to feel daunted if you’re supporting a secondary school child ’s learning at home, especially if they've just started Year 7 and are facing a bigger homework workload than they're used to. Every day, Home Learning Timetable links to three online lessons on websites like YouTube and TED-Ed, covering key curriculum areas like maths and science plus optional subjects like media studies.   You can access previous days’ learning activities, so there’s no obligation to do every lesson every day, and there’s an emphasis on fun, with quizzes, TV programmes and practical challenges alongside more structured lessons.   If you or your child finds a great learning resource online, you can submit it to the website to be considered for inclusion.

Best search engine

Kiddle

Keeping kids safe online is a priority for every parent, especially as a few wrong clicks could lead them to seriously unsuitable content.   Kiddle is a search engine for children that’s designed to ensure they can search safely. Search results are filtered to make sure they’re age-appropriate, and websites written especially for children are top of the listings.   Most results are illustrated with a thumbnail picture to help your child understand what they’re about, and the site is written in a large, child-friendly font for ease of reading.

Best for broadening horizons

TED-Ed

TED is renowned for its short, informative and powerful talks on a huge range of subjects – and TED-Ed is its youth and education initiative, bringing new ideas to children from primary age up.   Short animations that spark ideas are TED-Ed’s bread and butter, with collaborations from teachers, designers, journalists, science writers and historians, covering subjects as diverse as the immune system, the myths behind the Chinese Zodiac, and materials science.   Register with the website to receive engaging learning ideas by email, grouped by age, across curriculum and non-curriculum areas from maths, literature and language to health and psychology.

Best for investigation and curiosity

Wonderlab+ image

Looking to encourage a little scientific curiosity in your child? Wonderlab+ is the Science Museum Group’s free learning website that brings science to life through creative and fun experiments and games. It is fun, playful and educational.

Learn about how things work, conduct experiments, explore space and go on interactive missions to solve mysterious problems.

The graphics are really engaging and the website is easy for kids to navigate, with facts and information written in in a way that is easily accessible.

Vote By Mail

County elections officials mail vote-by-mail ballots to all active registered voters. Any registered voter may vote using a vote-by-mail ballot instead of going to the polls on Election Day. For information on vote-by-mail ballots, including  checking the status of your ballot or requesting a replacement ballot, please visit Vote By Mail.

Voter's Choice Act

Established by Senate Bill 450 (2016), the California Voter's Choice Act (VCA) modernizes elections in California by allowing counties to conduct elections under a model which provides greater flexibility and convenience for voters. This election model allows voters to choose how, when, and where to cast their ballot.

Voting in California

As a voter, you will help decide who will lead us. You make your voice heard on important issues that affect the future of our state and nation. Every time you use your precious right to vote, our democracy grows stronger. At Voting in California, you can apply to register to vote or fill in a printable vote-by-mail application, find your polling place and learn what to expect on Election Day.

  • Voting Technology

The Office of Voting Systems Technology Assessment (OVSTA) was created in September 2005. When created, OVSTA was charged with two main responsibilities: 1) voting system examination, testing, and certification for use in California elections; and 2) overseeing the approval of ballot printers, as well as authorizing and monitoring the manufacture and distribution of ballots for an election. Over the years, that scope has expanded to voting technologies including ePollBooks and Remote Accessible Vote by Mail Systems.

Where and How to Vote

Any registered voter in California can decide whether to vote at a polling place or vote by mail. To learn more on ways you can vote in California elections, visit Where and How to Vote.

The California Secretary of State's office offers a variety of resources about voting and civic engagement, including joining the Voter's Choice Act ambassador program, working as a poll worker, and supporting young voters through student-focused initiatives.

California Student Mock Election

Young people have the potential to be a powerful force in elections, but only if they get involved and make voting a habit. Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber Ph.D. and Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond invite high school and middle school students, teachers, and principals to participate in the California Student Mock Election every two years.

High School Voter Education Weeks

The California Education Code designates the last two full weeks in April and September as High School Voter Education Weeks. During these weeks, high schools and students work with county elections officials to promote civic education and participation on campus, encouraging lifelong voters and active citizens.

Honor Veterans. Vote.

The Honor Veterans. Vote. program allows California citizens the opportunity to pay tribute to a veteran or active-duty service member. A dedication can be submitted to our office for a service member and individuals will receive a certificate or lapel pin. We will also send an email notification to the veteran or service member that is being honored.

Poll Worker Information

Before every statewide election, thousands of Californians volunteer as poll workers to ensure that Election Day runs smoothly. Poll workers are provided training by county elections officials and paid a stipend for their services.

Promote the Vote California

Promote the Vote California focuses on advocating for a strong civic culture in California through partnerships with businesses and organizations for a more inclusive California.

Be a Student Poll Worker

Starting from the age of 16, high school students who are U.S. citizens, maintain a 2.5-grade point average, and have consent from their parent or guardian and the school are eligible to learn about election processes firsthand. They can earn between $65 and $180 by working as student poll workers on Election Day.

Students Vote Project

Students Vote Project (SVP) is a nonpartisan program established in 2016. It aims to elevate college student voices, promote civic engagement, and empower students to participate in the democratic process statewide.

  • SVP hosted three quarterly meetings (March, July, October) including SVP program updates, a civic engagement outreach training, an action plan workshop, and spotlight speakers from universities, colleges, counties, and nonpartisan organizations.
  • The California University and College Ballot Bowl is a friendly competition where higher education campuses compete to register the most students to vote and showcase civic engagement efforts. The Ballot Bowl occurs only during an even numbered year ahead of the general election.

Student Voter Registration

The Student Voter Registration program was created to ensure every school in California provides eligible students with a meaningful opportunity to register, or pre-register, to vote. The Secretary of State's office contacts schools annually to gather contact information as required by Elections Code and to provide voter registration cards when requested.

Voter's Choice Act Ambassador Program

The Secretary of State’s Voter’s Choice Act Ambassador Program aims to raise awareness about voting options and enhance voter education. Ambassadors work with various groups to address voter participation gaps as non-partisan trusted messengers.
