The junior cycle science CBA 1 is an assessment of students’ abilities to carry out an extended experimental investigation. The topic can be anything from the three areas of junior cycle science; physics, chemistry, and biology.
This assessment examines a student's ability to question and predict the outcomes of a hypothesis. They then must create and carry out a plan using the scientific process and analysis. Science CBA 1 finishes with a reflection and report of findings from the experiment.
Here are a few Science CBA 1 ideas and examples ;
1. Dropping a Ball to Measure the Bounce
This experiment involves dropping a ball like a football or bouncing ball and examining the relationship between the height of the bounces and how high the ball was dropped from. The student could use this experiment to show that the ball will not bounce higher than the initial height it is dropped from unless a force other than gravity acts upon it.
For some additional insight into how a dropped ball will bounce, the student should drop the ball from different heights. The challenge in this experiment is finding an accurate method for measuring how high the ball bounces after dropping.
Although, if you let the ball drop from some wood fixed in place like some furniture, you could see with your eyes, whether the ball bounces back to the same height.
2. Making a Lather with Water
This experiment can examine the relationship between water hardness and soap. First, you get some soap flakes and add them one at a time to some pure water. Keep doing so until lather forms, or in other words, small bubbles appear in the water.
Next, repeat the process with a hard water mix. You can make water harder yourself by adding in small quantities of minerals like calcium. Observe the results and create a detailed report on the topic.
3. Showing How Resistance Influences a Lightbulb in a Circuit
Showing how current flows through a circuit using a resistor is another good idea for your science CBA 1. For this excitement, you will need to connect a lightbulb to a circuit containing a battery or fixed power supply and include a switch.
You should also place a resistor in the circuit that you can remove and replace with others. Start with a strong resistor and take note of how bright the light is, then work your way down to weaker resistors until the bulb is shining brighter.
4. Examining Heat Loss
This experiment is a simple one that can be approached in a few different ways. Whichever method you choose to examine the process of heat loss, involves the same core elements; heating something and recording the time it takes to cool back down.
You could heat different liquids or different metals using the same equipment and see how long it takes for them to return to room temperature. Repeating this process for water versus oil, or steel versus copper will offer you insights into how heat loss works. After all, the scientific process is what you're trying to show in your CBA 1.
5. Cleaning Pennies
A fun, inexpensive and easy experiment that's suitable for science CBA 1 is cleaning pennies overnight using various liquids. All you need for this is a few small containers and a few different liquids like cola, soap, bleach, water and whatever else you can think of.
Pour a small quantity of whatever liquid you chose, into each container and place dirty pennies inside. Wait a set amount of time, like 24 or 48 hours, and then examine the results. Using different liquids and taking multiple measurements throughout the experiment will provide you with all the data you need for a great CBA 1.
6. How does the pressure and volume of a gas relate?
See how the pressure and volume of a gas are connected by doing an experiment with a simple gas law setup. Use a cylinder with a moving part and a gauge to measure the pressure of the gas as its volume changes.
7. Which sunscreen is most effective at blocking UV radiation?
Check how different sunscreens protect you from UV radiation by doing an experiment. Place different types of sunscreen in front of a UV light and see which one stops the most UV light from getting through.
8. Concentration and Osmosis in Plants How does the concentration of a solution affect osmosis in plant cells?
Find out how the concentration of a solution affects osmosis in plant cells by doing an experiment. Put thin slices of potato or other plants in different concentrations of sugar solutions and see how they change size or weight over time.
9. How does the concentration of a solution affect its electrical conductivity?
Learn about how the concentration of a solution affects its electrical conductivity by doing an experiment. Measure the electrical conductivity of different concentrations of salt solutions using a conductivity meter.
10. W hat is the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration?
Discover the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration by doing experiments with a force sensor and pulley system. Measure the force and acceleration of a moving mass using a force sensor and pulley.
11. What are the properties of waves and how can they be measured?
Investigate the different properties of waves, such as wavelength, frequency, and amplitude, by doing an experiment with a wave generator. Generate different types of waves and measure their properties with a wave meter.
12. How does soil composition impact plant growth?
See how the composition of soil affects the growth of plants by doing an experiment. Grow plants in soil with different compositions and compare their growth and development over time to see which soil composition is best for growing plants.
13. Investigating Soil Properties and Plant Growth
In this science task, students examine the properties of various soil types and their impact on plant growth. Through research and a controlled experiment, students compare growth of the same seed planted in different soil types. The aim is to determine which soil type is best for optimal plant growth and to understand the importance of soil properties.
14. Light Intensity and Photosynthesis
Students study the effect of light intensity on the rate of photosynthesis in Elodea plants. They set up a controlled experiment to measure the rate of photosynthesis under different light conditions and analyze the results. The task highlights the role of light in the process of photosynthesis and the importance of light intensity for plant growth.
15. Factors Affecting Evaporation Rates
Students analyze the factors that impact the rate of evaporation in different liquids. Guide to junior cert science exam, overview of junior cert science questions.
The questions in the junior cert science exam are so varied; that it is difficult to specify certain topics you must study. There are no options to which questions you must do on this paper – you must do everything on the paper. The questions on the actual exam paper (65%) include three on biology , three on chemistry and three on physics – obviously each question has many parts to it.
- Short questions are obviously self-explanatory, in terms of how you would answer.
- Longer questions involve you showing a strong understanding of the topic being asked for. You must include key terms associated with the question, in your answer.
- Experiment questions involve you stating the method of doing the experiment, or the conclusion/result of the experiment. Here, you just need to know the experiment very well, in order to include all the steps you followed.
- You may also be asked to draw a diagram in the experiment questions, and you will need to label everything drawn in the diagram.
- Other questions, which may appear, are ones on graphs and equations.
The junior cert science experiment book with all the mandatory experiments (10%) follows a format of you stating the experiment, equipment used, method, results and conclusion, and drawing a diagram.
- You must complete every single experiment in this experiment book (not all experiments in your schoolbook are mandatory, but all the ones in the experiment book are mandatory and must be filled out).
- You must pay attention during class, and you will find the write-ups easy (if you missed something the JC-Learn notes will help you).
The junior cert science coursework B (25%) format is laid out in the JC-Learn notes section. The headings include introduction, method, diagram, evaluation, results and conclusion.
- All of the questions on the write-up must be answered, and you should fill out all the space offered to you in the answer booklet, in order to achieve highly in this section.
- The write-ups for the two experiments are quite straightforward as long as you participate constantly throughout your groups experiment (usually groups of four do experiment together).
- As long as you have studied the topic of the titles given, you will find this section very easy, as you will understand how to attempt the experiment in a logical manner.

Exam timing and guidelines
Junior cert science exam timing:.
- The mandatory experiment book obviously has no time frame, as it is something you are completing throughout the junior cert course.
- The coursework B write-up of the two experiments has an unlimited time frame (your teacher will allocate a day which you complete it on), so you will not be under time pressure.
- The junior cert science paper itself is two hours long. This means you should be spending 40 minutes on each section (biology, chemistry and physics). Each section has three questions within it, meaning you should spend about 12/13 minutes on each question, which leaves at least 5 minutes at the end of the exam to look over it.
Order To Do Junior Cert Science Paper:
- You should just complete the paper in the order it is already in, unless you are a lot stronger in one of the areas (in that case you should do that area at the beginning).
- You do not know what topics may come up, so it is hard to set an order in which you will do the exam.
Junior Cert Science Exam layout & Marking Schemes:
- Biology (120 marks) has three questions. Question 1 is worth 52 marks, and it longer than the other two questions. Question 2 and 3 are both worth 39 marks.
- Chemistry (120 marks) has three questions. Question 1 is worth 52 marks, and it longer than the other two questions. Question 2 and 3 are both worth 39 marks.
- Physics (120 marks) has three questions. Question 1 is worth 52 marks, and it longer than the other two questions. Question 2 and 3 are both worth 39 marks.
There is no set marking scheme for the mandatory experiments.
The marking scheme for coursework B is as follows –
- Introduction = 10 marks
- Preparation and planning = 40 marks
- Procedure, Apparatus, Safety, Data collection/Observations = 40 marks
- Analysis = 40 marks
- Comment = 20 marks
What To Do Before Exam?
- Revise over your condensed notes of every single chapter
- Single out chapters you find most difficult and quickly scan over all the details within the chapter.
- Stay calm, and remember that there will always be enough on this large exam to let you perform strongly.
- Be confident – if you have studied the notes, advice and exam answers on JC-Learn, know that you will achieve a very high grade.
What To Bring To The Exam :
- You obviously should bring a pen, but also a pencil, ruler and rubber (for your diagrams).
- You should also bring a log tables (if they do not give you one) as many formulas are in here.
- Bring colouring pencils to exam (for diagrams), but only colour diagrams if you have time to.

Energy Content of Food In this experiment we measure the temperature change in a can of water to determine the energy content of the food being burned below it. A calorie is the amount of energy required to raise the temperature of 1 gram of water by 1°C.
Energy stored within a food item (like a marshmallow) will be released if the food is burned. A can with water will be placed just above the burning food. The amount of energy released from the food will be determined by calculating the energy gained by the water in the can.
The can will contain 50mL of water. A temperature probe will monitor the temperature change in the water. The calories gained by the water in the can is equal to the mass of water × change in temperature of water.

This is a digital booklet , designed to help you with your Junior Cycle Science revision. The main learning outcomes from each of the four sections of the course (earth and space, chemical world, physical world and biological world) are presented in the form of several questions, to help you to produce your own revision notes.
Once you have answered each question once, you can then continue to use this booklet as a revision aid. An idea might be to place a tick beside each answer box every time that you revise a particular question. This should help you to keep track of your revision progress. A checklist is also provided for the “nature of science” section of the course.
It is important to note that the emphasis of the new Junior Cycle Science course is not on the ability to learn and to regurgitate facts . A certain amount of fact-based knowledge is required, and this booklet aims to help with that. However, you should also aim to practice the skills from the “nature of science” section, including drawing graphs, analysing data, evaluating sources of information, and presenting your own research findings, among others.
Overall, it is hoped that this booklet will help with your revision, and that it could be particularly useful as a shortened version of your notes that you can look over immediately prior to exams.

How to get a Distinction in Junior Cycle Science
The New Junior Cycle Science Course is much broader than the old Junior Cert Exam. Although the lack of structure to the paper can put some students off, the paper is actually doable. In this guide, you will hopefully get a better understanding of the course and how to ace it!
The Science Junior Cycle Exam is marked out of 400 marks. The Assessment Task is worth 10% (40 marks) and the Written Examination at the end of third year is worth 90% (360 marks).
CBA 1 - Extended Experimental Investigation
CBA 1 is a Written Assessment submitted at the end of Second Year, which is nice, as you can get it out of the way before the workload picks up in third year! Even though the results of CBA 1 will not go towards your final grade, it’s a chance to develop your practical skills as a scientist and achieving an “Exceptional” will get your Junior Cycle off to a great start. You can choose any topic to research and carry out an experiment on.
CBA 2 - Science in Society Investigation (SSI)
CBA 2 is known as the S.S.I. and is a written assignment completed around Christmas time in third year. It gives you an opportunity to research an area of controversy in science that you would like to learn more about. It is a project that you will put your research skills and critical thinking to good use. Like for CBA1, there is a Features of Quality there to guide you so make good use of it!
The Written Exam (90%)
The Science Written Examination is worth 90% of your grade, with 360 marks going for a 2-hour long paper at the end of third year. This exam has no set structure or topics, which can throw some students off. Instead, it will take the form of various multi-part questions divided into two sections: Section A and Section B.

There are so many different ways to use and make flashcards, like buying a pack from a stationery shop and doing it the old-fashioned way, making them online on Quizlet or saving time and using the Studyclix Science Flashcards.
This is writing out everything you know on a topic and afterwards going over what you've forgotten.
