Chrome is getting 3 new generative AI features

Jan 23, 2024

[[read-time]] min read

Turn on these experimental AI features to organize your tabs, create custom themes and get help with writing on the web.

parisa tabriz

Over the last few years, we’ve brought the latest machine learning and AI technologies into Chrome to make searching the web easier, safer and more accessible. We started with improving practical, everyday tasks, like helping you add real-time captions to videos, better detect malicious sites , manage permission prompts and generate the key points of a webpage .

Starting with today’s release of Chrome (M121), we're introducing experimental generative AI features to make it even easier and more efficient to browse — all while keeping your experience personalized to you.

You’ll be able to try out these new features in Chrome on Macs and Windows PCs over the next few days, starting in the U.S. Just sign into Chrome, select “Settings” from the three-dot menu and navigate to the “ Experimental AI ” page. Because these features are early public experiments, they’ll be disabled for enterprise and educational accounts for now.

Smartly organize your tabs

Tab groups are a helpful way to manage lots of tabs, but curating them can be a pretty manual process. With a new tab organizer feature, Chrome will automatically suggest and create tab groups based on your open tabs. This can be particularly helpful if you’re working on several tasks in Chrome at the same time, like planning a trip, researching a topic and shopping. To use this feature, right-click on a tab and select “ Organize Similar Tabs ” or click the drop-down arrow to the left of your tabs. Chrome will even suggest names and emoji for these new groups so you can easily find them again when you need them next.

Create your own themes with AI

Last year, we introduced generative AI wallpapers with Android 14 and Pixel 8 devices. Now we’re bringing that same text-to-image diffusion model to Chrome so you can personalize your browser even more. You’ll be able to quickly generate custom themes based on a subject, mood, visual style and color that you choose — no need to become an AI prompt expert! To get started, visit the “ Customize Chrome ” side panel, click “Change theme” and then “Create with AI.” For example, maybe you’re enamored with the “aurora borealis” and want to see it in an “animated” style with a “serene” mood. Just select those options to see what Chrome comes up with. For more inspiration, check out this collection of the Chrome team’s favorite theme creations.

Quick reminder: In addition to AI-generated themes, you can also customize Chrome with photos you’ve uploaded or themes from our collections in the Chrome Web Store, including ones commissioned from a growing community of artists .

Get help drafting things on the web

Writing on the web can be daunting, especially if you want to articulate your thoughts on public spaces or forums. So in next month's Chrome release, we’ll launch another experimental AI-powered feature to help you write with more confidence on the web — whether you want to leave a well-written review for a restaurant, craft a friendly RSVP for a party or make a formal inquiry about an apartment rental. To get started, right-click a text box or field on any site you visit in Chrome and select “Help me write.” Type in a few words and our AI will kickstart the writing process for you.

Look out for more ways we’re bringing AI and ML into Chrome this year, including integrating our new AI model Gemini , to help you browse even easier and faster.

Here are 12 Chrome Flags that will improve your web-browsing experience

Published on March 12, 2024

Google Chrome Flags page running on both smartphone and a Chromebook, stock photo (3)

Chrome is known for its simplicity and speed. Despite this, there are a lot of extra tools under the hood. This includes several experimental features that can be accessed through special Chrome Flags.

Considering these are all test features that might not even make it to the stable version of Chrome, bugs are expected. Nonetheless, if you are willing to go through the occasional hiccup, some enable an improved browsing experience. Let’s take a look at some of our favorites.

What is a Chrome Flag?

Chrome Flags are experimental features Google hasn’t released yet, but you can access and try. Just remember these aren’t ready for an official release just yet. This means they may not work very well all of the time. You may encounter the occasional hiccup, bug, or crash.

How do you access Chrome Flags settings?

No matter how much you dig into menus and options, you won’t find them in the settings unless you know how to access this section. You need to know your way in!

How to access the Chrome Flags page:

  • Open Chrome .
  • Click on the address and delete any URL that might be in it.
  • Type the following in the address bar: “chrome://flags/” (without quotation marks).
  • Press Enter .
  • You are in!

How to access the Chrome Flags page (1)

By the way, these steps work both on mobile and desktop. That said, not all Chrome Flags are available for all platforms. There are two primary tabs on the page: Available and Unavailable. Some of these experimental features are only available on specific devices. You can’t use features made for Android on devices like a laptop, for example.

How to enable a Chrome Flag:

  • Once you find yourself within the page, go ahead and search for the Chrome Flag you want to try out.
  • Select the drop-down menu under the Flag you want to use. It usually reads either Default or Disabled .
  • Select Enabled .
  • You’ll need to relaunch Chrome most of the time. Hit Relaunc h if the option shows up.

How to enable Chrome Flags 1

Note: These instructions were assembled using a Google Pixel 7 running Android 14. These steps are identical across all Chrome browsers, though. The same steps will work on desktop and iOS.

Are Chrome Flags safe?

Once in the Chrome Flags settings, you will see a warning message telling you about the dangers of using them. This is because experimental features can cause issues and hiccups in the browser. They are usually not too unstable, but some can be. Regardless, you can easily disable them.

How to disable Chrome Flags:

  • Access the Chrome Flags settings as directed in the previous section.
  • Find the experimental Chrome Flag you want to disable.
  • Select the drop-down menu and select Disabled .
  • Alternatively, you can press the button in the top-right corner that says Reset all to deactivate all of them.
  • You’ll need to relaunch Chrome most of the time. Hit Relaunch if the option shows up.

Editor’s note: We’ll regularly update this list with new Chrome Flags. All instructions moving forward were put together using a custom PC running Windows 11 and Chrome version 122.0.6261.129, unless otherwise specified.

Smooth Scrolling Chrome Flags

Ever notice your scrolling stutter or that it can get a bit sluggish? There could be many reasons it’s happening, but this Chrome Flag will likely improve the situation. Search for “Smooth Scrolling” in the search bar and enable the feature. It’s a great feature Android users should enable, but you can also use it on Windows, Linux, and Chrome OS.

Touch UI Layout Chrome flag

Many convertible laptops, Windows tablets, and other devices now come with capable touch screens. This makes it possible to interact with content more naturally. Sometimes, the desktop interface doesn’t work well with touch commands, though. The browser has a touch-optimized UI hidden in the Chrome Flags.

In the search bar, search for “Touch UI Layout.” Click on the drop-down menu next to it and select Enabled .

Experimental QUIC Protocol

Experimental QUIC protocol Chrome flags

Certain Chrome Flags speed up your browsing experience. QUIC is Google’s protocol, and it’s designed to make the web faster. Enabling this one will speed things up, but only when websites have been optimized for it. Something is better than nothing, though!

On the main page, search for “Experimental QUIC Protocol.” Click on the drop-down menu next to it and select Enabled .

Enable Zero-copy rasterizer

Zero copy rasterizer

If you want Chrome’s general performance to be faster, one neat trick is to enable Zero-copy rasterizer. This will allow Chrome threads to write directly to the GPU for tile management. In turn, Chrome should operate faster, at least theoretically. Whether you’ll actually notice a difference is another story. Also, it makes Chrome more prone to crashes. You can definitely give it a try, though.

Search for “Zero-copy rasterizer” and enable it in the drop-down Chrome Flags menu.

Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents

Auto Dark Mode Chrome flag

Dark Mode is pretty cool, both aesthetically and for eye comfort reasons . If you are also a fan of it, you want all website content to support it. Sadly, not all websites cooperate, but a secondary option forces the option on all websites.

Open the Chrome Flags page and search for “Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.” Enable the feature through the drop-down menu next to it.

Parallel Downloading Chrome Flag

Parallel Downloading

Waiting for large files to download can be a hassle. Let’s cut delays by dividing downloads into multiple files to be downloaded simultaneously.

Search for “Parallel Downloading” and enable the feature using the drop-down menu to the right.

Show autofill predictions

Nobody likes filling out forms, so Google simplifies this process using autofill. Still annoying? You can automatically have Chrome autofill form information by enabling the “Show autofill predictions” feature.

Search for “Show Autofill Predictions” and enable the feature using the drop-down menu to the right.

Live Caption Chrome Flags

Some video players and websites offer captions, but this isn’t a universal feature. Those who want transcripts for all recognized words in media can use the Live Caption Chrome Flag.

Search for “Live Caption” and enable it.

GPU Rasterization

GPU Rasterization

Is Chrome simply not fast enough for you? We know how you can harness the full power of your computer to speed things up. There’s a trick, though; you need to have a dedicated GPU for this one to make any improvements to Chrome’s performance. GPU Rasterization allows Chrome to take some of the workload off the CPU and have your GPU take care of it.

Here’s how to do it. Search for “GPU rasterization” and enable the feature using the drop-down menu.

Chrome Refresh 2023 Chrome Flag

Chrome is starting to look a bit outdated, right? Everything is kind of square and dull. If you want a more modern design, go into the Chrome Flags and enable “Chrome Refresh 2023.” The new design hasn’t been pushed out to all users, but Google has been working on it. It resembles Material You, with more colorful and playful hues and rounded corners. Additionally, it will feel better on touchscreen devices, as Material You is a mobile-focused design language.

Override software rendering list

GPU acceleration on Chrome is usually only available for supported devices. But, of course, there is a Chrome Flag for nearly everything. You can force Chrome to use GPU acceleration, even on unsupported devices. Just be warned that this may cause compatibility issues, as systems are often not supported for a reason.

Just look for “Override software rendering list” and enable the Chrome Flag.

Partial swap

Partial Swap improves memory management, and can supercharge your browser’s performance. It basically swaps memory usage, prioritizing tabs and tasks you are using at the moment. The thing is, this can also cause issues from time to time.

Partial swap comes enabled by default, so search for “Partial swap” to disable it. Or, if it’s disabled, you can try to enable it and see if it helps.

Using Chrome Flags is safe, but it can make your experience a bit buggy. The team also warns you could lose data and compromise privacy. This is just Google being careful, though. The worst that can usually happen is that you’ll need to relaunch Chrome and turn off the Chrome Flags, if anything goes wrong.

Chrome Flags are experimental features the Google team is testing. The team will make these official Chrome features once they are in good working order, if they are deemed worthy. This isn’t always the case, though. Additionally, Chrome Flags are often killed.

You can use Chrome Flags on both mobile and desktop browsers, but not all Chrome lags are available on every device. Some are desktop or mobile-specific. However, Chrome will separate unavailable Flags and put them into the Unavailable tab.

Google Chrome is the world's most popular browser, but even though it gets a lot right, you can still improve it. Chrome experts probably know that some of its best options are hidden.

Many of these secret options live in the Chrome Flags menu. Let's discuss some of the best Chrome flags that you can tweak for a faster, handier, or more enjoyable experience.

How Do I Get Chrome Flags?

Chrome has a list of experimental features that you can access by entering this address in your search bar:

Doing so will grant you access to the backdoor list of new options. This is a hidden Chrome page to prevent novice users from playing with them and accidentally creating issues. Not all of them are applicable for normal use, but you'll find several that are worth tweaking.

Please note Chrome's warning that these flags can cause security issues and potential data loss.

Note that since the flags aren't in any sort of order, use the search bar at the top of the screen to easily jump to them. Google may change or remove these flags at any time, so you shouldn't get too attached to them. Sometimes they end up in the stable release of Chrome as full features; other times they disappear.

Once you've enabled the Chrome flags you want to try, just click the big Relaunch Now button at the bottom of the screen. Chrome will restart and you can use the flags you've turned on.

How Do I Enable the New UI in Chrome?

Google released Chrome version 69 in September 2018. This version marked a revamped user interface, complete with more rounded tabs than before. Since Chrome updates automatically, you're almost certainly using the new UI already.

It doesn't hurt to check for updates while you're at it. You'll need to head into Chrome's options to do this. Wondering how to get to Chrome's settings to update? Click the three-bar Menu icon and browse to Help > About Google Chrome to check for browser updates. We used Chrome version 73 when creating this list.

How Do I Go Back to the Old Chrome?

Shortly after the new layout released, you could use a flag to go back to the old Chrome look. However, this flag is no longer available. Thus, the only way to go back to the old Chrome look would be to use an older version. We don't recommend this, as older versions aren't as secure.

How to Reset Chrome Flags

If you change some Chrome flags and later find something isn't working right, don't panic. Just open the flags page again and click the Reset all to default button.

1. Picture-in-Picture Mode

Search: #enable-picture-in-picture . This also requires enabling #enable-surfaces-for-videos .

Doing one task at a time is so last year. The latest trend is picture-in-picture mode, which allows you to pop out a window on your mobile device to watch a video or other content on top of another app.

Using this flag, you can try the same on your desktop. It works fairly well; right-click twice on a YouTube video and choose  Picture in picture . This will pop the video out into a window you can move around anywhere---even outside of Chrome.

Chrome Picture in Picture

2. Tab Discarding

Search: #automatic-tab-discarding

Chrome is infamous for sucking up a ton of memory . If you have a lower-end computer, you can use this flag to help conserve some RAM. Enabling it will make Chrome "disable" tabs that you haven't used in a while. They stay at the top of your browser and will reload when you click them.

Visit chrome://discards to see some information about tab discarding. The list shows how "important" Chrome thinks each tab is.

Chrome Discards Window

3. Quickly Mute Tabs

Search: #sound-content-setting

Everyone hates sites that blast auto-playing videos every time you visit. To combat this, Chrome lets you right-click a tab and choose  Mute site to keep it quiet in the future. But doing this will mute all future tabs of that site, which you might not want.

Set this flag to Disable d and you'll get the old Mute tab action back. This lets you mute one tab of a website without affecting the audio if you open that site in the future.

Chrome Mute Tab Mute Site

4. Generate Passwords Automatically

Search: #automatic-password-generation

You hopefully know that using a strong password is paramount to online security. We recommend using a password manager to create and save strong passwords. If you don't want to try a dedicated app, you can try a built-in Chrome feature.

Enable the flag above, make sure you're signed into your Google account in Chrome, and your browser will generate passwords on account creation pages. It syncs these to your Google account automatically.

useful chrome flags

5. Stop Websites from Hijacking Navigation

Search: #enable-history-entry-requires-user-gesture

Have you ever clicked the Back button on a website and found that you stayed on the same page? This is due to websites abusing the History feature in your browser and writing dummy entries that keep you on their page when you click Back . Thus, you have to click the button several times quickly to escape.

Chrome's developers noticed this and added a flag to battle it. Enable it, and websites won't be allowed to write extra entries into your history unless you interact with the page.

6. Smooth Scrolling

Search: #smooth-scrolling

When you scroll a page using your mouse wheel, arrow keys, or touchpad shortcut, you might have noticed a jerky animation, especially if you have lots of tabs open. This flag will smooth out that stutter and make your scrolling nice and crisp.

The Default setting on this flag seems to enable smooth scrolling. However, some claim that when you have many Chrome tabs open, the browser reverts to the clunky scroll format. So while you might not notice a difference with this one if you have a powerful PC, you can still give it a try if you like.

7. Get Extra Warning About Insecure Sites

Search: #enable-mark-http-as

You've probably noticed that Chrome displays secure sites (using HTTPS) with a green padlock icon. Whenever a site uses an insecure connection (HTTP), however, Chrome doesn't use any colors. It displays a Not Secure message, but that's easy to miss.

Set this flag to Enabled (mark as actively dangerous) , and Chrome will feature that Not Secure text in red instead. It's a minor touch, but a good reminder not to enter any private information on insecure sites. Note that Chrome will always display a red warning icon on unsafe sites, like those with invalid security certificates.

Chrome Flag HTTP Warning

8. Enable HDR

Search: #enable-hdr

HDR, or high dynamic range, is one of the latest advancements in display technology. It essentially makes colors richer by increasing the contrast and providing more colors to display.

If you own an HDR monitor, you should take a moment to enable this flag so Chrome supports HDR content. It might not do a whole lot yet, but we'll surely see more support for HDR in the near future.

9. Easily Show Cached Websites

Search: #show-saved-copy

When you visit a website, your browser stores a copy of it in the cache. This allows it to quickly display the page without downloading everything again when you next visit it.

Normally, when you try to access a website that won't load, your only options are refreshing and waiting. But if you set this flag to Enable , you'll see a new Show saved copy button. This lets you see the website as your browser last saved it, as long as you haven't cleared it.

Chrome Show Saved Cache

Of course, if the website isn't responding, you can't do much with it. But this will at least let you finish an article you were reading.

10. Show Autofill Predictions

Search: #show-autofill-type-predictions

You probably use Chrome's autofill all the time to populate fields with common info like your address. You can use a flag to take this handy feature a step further. Enabling it will pre-populate fields with your autofill text.

11. Automatically Reload Offline Tabs

Search: #enable-offline-auto-reload

If your browser goes offline and you have a ton of tabs open, you usually have to manually click each of them to activate and reload them. If you enable this flag, Chrome will automatically reload any offline tabs when you get back online.

Use it with caution, as it could result in a heavy workload if you have lots of tabs open. If you prefer, you can disable this flag and enable a similar flag, labeled #enable-offline-auto-reload-visible-only . This will only reload offline tabs when they're visible.

12. Reduce Tracking

Search:  #disable-hyperlink-auditing

It's no secret that all sorts of web entities love to track your browsing . While it's not one of the strongest ways to block trackers, you can set this flag to Disabled to turn off the sending of " hyperlink auditing pings." Every little bit helps.

What Are Your Favorite Chrome Flags?

We've looked at some of the best Chrome flags; now you have all sorts of new Chrome options to play around with. Google could easily remove any of these flags or add new ones, so keep an eye out if you're interested in trying more experimental features. You can also try the Chrome Beta for access to the latest features before they go mainstream.

Google chrome gets an experimental "windows 11" mode, here's how to enable it.

One of our favorite things about Windows 11 is its use of rounded corners and subtle " Mica material " transparency effects. Of course, these design elements only show up in native Windows apps. But the latest Chrome release (version 96) contains an experimental UI mode that, when enabled, makes the browser fit the Windows 11 design language.

As discovered by Windows Latest , the Chrome 96 "Windows 11" mode adds rounded corners to the browser, its context menus, and some pop-up items. Other Fluent Design elements, such as transparency effects, also show up in the "Windows 11" mode ... though they're used a bit sporadically (it seems that Google's still working on this feature).

Interestingly, the new "Windows 11" mode works in both Windows 11 and Windows 10. If you're a Windows 10 user with a hankering for the latest and greatest, you could enable this experimental feature to make your desktop a bit prettier.

To activate Chrome's experimental Windows 11 mode, upgrade to the latest Chrome release (version 96 or newer) and follow these steps:

  • Paste Chrome://flags in your address bar and press enter.
  • Search for the "Windows 11" flag.
  • Enable the flag and restart your browser.

Related: Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge Get a Free PDF Editor, Thanks to Adobe

We haven't encountered any bugs or weird crashes with "Windows 11" mode enabled, but you may be less lucky. If Chrome acts up with this experimental UI enabled, just go back into the Chrome flags, search for "Windows 11," and disable it.

As far as we can tell, Google is still working on Chrome's "Windows 11" mode. It will probably gain more Fluid Design elements in a future update, and unless Google has a change of heart, "Windows 11" mode will eventually become the default UI for the Chrome browser.

chrome experimental ui

Google Chrome is undergoing a significant makeover for its desktop sign-in process. The company is developing a new sign-in UI based on the UNO model on desktop , aiming to simplify how users log in and authenticate their accounts. As part of this, the “ explicit browser sign-in UI ” experiment is being run on Chrome for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

But what is the UNO model? Though details are still scarce, the UNO model is a framework enabling developers to build cross-platform applications using XAML and C#.

Chrome’s Explicit Browser Sign-In UI on Desktop

The new “Explicit Browser Sign-in UI” experimental feature, linked to the UNO model, aims to provide users with a consistent and clear sign-in experience. It’s used during the initial launch of the UNO model on desktop and any subsequent phases of the experiment. When signing in to your Google account or other services within the browser, this UI offers clear prompts and seamless integration with Chrome’s interface.

Enhanced Profile Menu

Enabling the explicit browser sign-in UI on desktop flag brings two new options to your Profile menu:

  • Customize Your Chrome: Personalize your Chrome profile by renaming it, choosing a color scheme, and selecting an icon.
  • Close This Profile: Clicking this button closes the active Chrome profile, perfect for switching accounts or ending the current session without affecting other open profiles.

Chromium Gerrit, UNO-D and sign-in

From Chromium Gerrit issues related to UNO-D, we noticed the following changes to Chrome regarding sign-in, profile management, and user experience:

  • Remove account image in Profile Menu header for web-only state: This change likely removes the account image (such as a profile picture) from the Profile Menu header specifically when the browser is in a web-only state (i.e., not associated with a locally installed application).
  • Remove account image in Profile Menu header for web-only state
  • Enable account storage for addresses by default with explicit signin
  • Update buttons to add new and manage profiles in Profile Menu
  • Update guest profile label with titlecase on Profile Menu:

How to use Google’s refreshed Chrome UI right now, before anyone else

Zach Epstein

Google is a dominant force in nearly every area of its business. It all started with Google Search, of course, and the company’s search engine continues to be the most widely used option on the planet by a staggering margin. But that was just the beginning. Products like Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube are equally dominant in their respective categories. Then there’s Android, which is the most popular mobile platform on the planet. According to data from Net Marketshare, Google’s Android OS had a staggering 71% global market share as of March 2018. No smartphone platform has been that dominant since Nokia’s Symbian OS back in the early 2000s.

There’s another piece of Google software that’s nearly as dominant as Android, and it’s the company’s Chrome web browser. After showing the world that there was a simpler way to browse the web than Internet Explorer, Chrome has continue to grow non-stop for the better part of a decade. As of last month, Net Marketshare has Chrome’s global market share at nearly 62%. The next closest browser is Internet Explorer with just 12.5%. Chrome is indeed the preferred browser for most people around the world, and if you count yourself among the browser’s users, we’ve got something cool that you should check out.

If you’ve never tried Chrome Canary before, now might be the perfect time to give it a shot. Why? Because Google is working on a refreshed user interface for the Chrome browser, and Chrome Canary users can try it out right now, long before the final version reaches the public.

As  Ghacks notes , the new UI isn’t enabled by default in the latest Chrome Canary build. Instead, you have to enable it by accessing a hidden menu. It’s quite simple to do though, and Ghacks laid out the three-step process .

How to get Google Chrome dark mode on iOS, Android and Windows

Get Google Chrome dark mode on any device, and enjoy a new look for more comfortable browsing at night time

Shot of Google Chrome dark mode on PC screen

Switching to Google Chrome dark mode on any device is not only incredibly easy but well worth doing. Not only does it decrease the risk of eye strain in low light conditions, but it also reduces screen glare and saves energy - what's not to love?!

Dark mode is a supplemental mode that allows you to change the user interface (UI) on any of your devices from light to dark. While the light reduces, making for a more comfortable reading experience at night, the minimum color contrasts required for readability are still maintained, so you'll get exactly the same experience you would in the day, just with far fewer risks to your eye health.

Bursting onto the scene in 2016, dark mode first appeared as part of the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but Apple were quick to jump on the bandwagon with their own launch in 2018 and Google Chrome dark mode dropped in 2021. Fast forward to 2022 and it doesn't matter whether you want to use Instagram in dark mode to scroll through all those jaw-droopingly beautiful images or use YouTube dark mode to watch those must-see videos, it's widely available across all your favorite platforms.

Whether you're using one of the best windows laptops or you're more a fan of the best MacBook and Macs , you'll find Google Chrome dark mode super beneficial when you're browsing first thing in the morning or late at night. While more research is needed, studies are showing that using dark mode may improve your sleep and cause less disruption to your circadian rhythm than blue light does.

But while Google Chrome dark mode can be set up on some PC operating systems , it's mobile users who will get the most benefits, with switching to dark mode resulting in less energy usage and therefore, longer battery life. Although it's hard to say how much battery savings are up for grabs, it's estimated that you can conserve anywhere between 15% and 60% of screen energy depending on the level of screen brightness you choose while in dark mode - which is pretty impressive!

Whether you're wanting to save your device’s battery life or protect your eye health, you’ll find switching to the dark side brings with it all kinds of benefits. If you find these reasons compelling to turn on Google Chrome dark mode, then read on to find out how to make the switch in Windows, macOS, Android and iOS.

Changing Chrome to dark mode for Windows 11

1. Enter the Settings menu, choose 'Personalization' click 'Colors' and scroll down to the switch marked 'Choose your default app mode'.

Get daily insight, inspiration and deals in your inbox

Sign up for breaking news, reviews, opinion, top tech deals, and more.

2. Change this to 'Dark' and all apps with a native dark mode, including Chrome, will change color. There's no need to restart your browser.

Changing Chrome to dark mode for macOS

1. Open 'System Preferences', click 'General', select 'Appearance'.

2. Select the 'Dark' option. As with Windows, all apps with a native dark mode will change automatically with no further input from you.

Changing Chrome to dark mode for Android 12

1. Dark mode is still an experimental feature in Chrome for Android, so bear in mind that some design elements might look a little strange. To activate it, enter chrome://flags in the browser's address bar.

2. Tap the 'Search flags' box and enter the work dark . You'll find two options here: 'Android web contents dark mode' and 'Android Chrome UI dark mode'. If you activate the first option, Chrome will detect if a site's developers have created a dark version and select it automatically. If there's no dark version available, the browser will invert the site's colors. Activating the second option means that the browser interface itself will turn dark.

3. Tap the drop-down menu under each of these options and change the setting to 'Activated', then restart Chrome.

4. Now open the settings menu, tap 'Themes' and select 'Dark'. If you can't see the Themes option, restart Chrome again and it should appear.

Changing Chrome to dark mode for iPhone and iPad

When Apple released iOS 13, it introduced dark mode to the whole operating system, both for iPhone and iPad.

Since then, Google Chrome for iOS has been updated to accommodate this.

You only need to make sure that Dark Mode is enabled in Settings > Display > Dark Mode, and Chrome will reflect this.

Are there other Google apps that support dark mode?

There's plenty of other apps from Google that can also switch to a dark mode. Gmail dark mode lets you view your inbox without the glare of the standard white interface, and there's now a universal dark mode for Google Maps too, alongside a dark mode in Android .

This is particularly handy for mobile devices, as it lets you conserve a little extra energy while using your phone's battery-hungry GPS navigation.

Chrome dev tools settings: where is the Experiments tab to Allow custom UI themes?

I am using chrome version 36+

according to this page, I should be able to allow custom themes using the following instructions:

Installation Instructions Add this theme Goto chrome://flags and Enable Developer Tools experiments. Open developer tools settings, select Experiments tab, and check 'Allow custom UI themes' . Reload devtools.

I do not see such a tab in the dev tools settings. I see only 'general', 'workspace', and 'shortcuts'

These are some simple steps to follow, hope it will be helpful.

  • Open a new chrome tab, type chrome://flags
  • Find, "Enable Developer Tools experiments." using ctrl/cmd+f or simply searching for it by scrolling down the page.
  • Click the "enable" link
  • Click on "Relaunch Now" at the bottom of the page.
  • After restarting Chrome, open DevTools, DevTools settings, and select the experiments tab.

Now select the experiment you want (e.g. "Allow custom UI themes" ).

You need to reload devtools after: Alt-R will reload devtools itself, or you can just close and reopen it.

Paul Irish's user avatar

  • You HAVE to use the "Relaunch Now" button. For me and some others anyway. –  Sirat Commented Apr 28, 2017 at 15:12

To get to the Dev Tools Experiments area you have to click on the gear icon in the inspector.

If still not working you should go to:

chrome://extensions/

And click the 'Enable' checkbox for the DevTools extension you wish to enable.

You need to restart the browser after changing the flag at chrome://flags

I found it. There is a checkbox under experiments tab: Allow custom UI themes

  • I don't see it. Where is the experiments tab? I only see General, Workspace, Shortcuts. That must be the best-hidden thing in the world of UX –  George Katsanos Commented Aug 24, 2014 at 16:02

Restart chrome just not means to close the chrome and then open it. you should click the 'Relaunch Now' button of the flags tab. and then it's work for me.

ooooh326's user avatar

2022 update: There doesn't seem to be any option in chrome://flags but there is an option:

devtools > settings > experiments > Allow extensions to load custom stylesheets

loislo's answer is absolutely right (You need to restart the browser after changing the flag at chrome://flags). But notice that your chrome can work in the background. Go to the tray, look for the chrome icon and exit.

Navigate to chrome://flags/

Find and enable Developer Tools experiments Mac, Windows, Linux, Chrome OS

Relaunch Chrome, open develop tool, setting, you will see experiments tab.

The new, experimental, redesigned UI

For the past couple of days, I have been redirected to the redesign when visiting https://www.reddit.com so I decided to make a Chrome extension for myself that forces a specific UI. I also published the extension on Chrome Web Store and AMO (Firefox Add-Ons) , it's called UI Changer for Reddit for anyone interested (you must be logged into Reddit if you want to use the 2nd generation interface as Reddit only serves it to authenticated users).

UPDATE (13. Feb): The extension can now change your look to any of the three available interfaces and will prevent it from changing when you open someone else's link.

UPDATE (14. Feb): The extension is now available for Firefox .

The current solution to access the previous interface is to use https://new.reddit.com . I wish that this worked even when not signed in. I hope that by the time this solution ceases to work, Reddit will have added a way to hide the sidebar that is taking up a big portion of the screen at all times. Right now, the only way to hide it is through browser developer tools or by using AdBlock. In addition to this, Chat should have a pop-up mode like it did previously. Other than that, I have no complaints with regards to the new UI.

Increased Asset Preloading Count

Increasing the maximum limit of preloaded assets from 100 to infinite allows games you've already played to load much faster by instantly accessing previously loaded assets.

For this to be effective, the game must have been fully loaded at least once, preferably with the entire map cached.

If a game has a "Skip Loading" button, it's recommended to use it. These games typically include a countdown timer that, after reaching zero, merely confirms that all assets are loaded.

Prerequisites and planning for installing Tanzu Application Platform

The following are required to install Tanzu Application Platform (commonly known as TAP):

Installation planning

Before you begin a Tanzu Application Platform installation:

Review the Tanzu Application Platform planning and architecture documentation. For more information, see Planning and architecture reference .

(Optional) To gain an understanding of Tanzu Application Platform, experiment with a Tanzu Application Platform sandbox. For more information, see Access an experimental developer sandbox environment .

Installation prerequisites

Installation requires:

Broadcom Support Portal and container image registry requirements

Access to Broadcom Support Portal:

  • A Broadcom Support Portal account to download Tanzu Application Platform packages.
  • Network access to Broadcom registry tanzu.packages.broadcom.com .

Cluster-specific registry:

A container image registry, such as Harbor or Docker Hub for application images, base images, and runtime dependencies. When available, VMware recommends using a paid registry account to avoid potential rate-limiting associated with some free registry offerings.

Recommended storage space for container image registry:

  • 1 GB of available storage if installing Tanzu Build Service with the lite set of dependencies.
  • 10 GB of available storage if installing Tanzu Build Service with the full set of dependencies, which are suitable for offline environments.
Note For production environments, full dependencies are recommended to optimize security and performance. For more information about Tanzu Build Service dependencies, see About lite and full dependencies .

Registry credentials with read and write access available to Tanzu Application Platform to store images.

Network access to your chosen container image registry.

DNS Records

There are some optional but recommended DNS records you must allocate if you decide to use these particular components:

Cloud Native Runtimes (Knative): Allocate a wildcard subdomain for your developer’s applications. This is specified in the shared.ingress_domain key of the tap-values.yaml configuration file that you input with the installation. This wildcard must be pointed at the external IP address of the tanzu-system-ingress ’s envoy service. See Access with the shared Ingress method for more information about tanzu-system-ingress .

Tanzu Developer Portal: If you decide to implement the shared ingress and include Tanzu Developer Portal, allocate a fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that can be pointed at the tanzu-system-ingress service. The default host name consists of tap-gui and the shared.ingress_domain value. For example, tap-gui.example.com .

Supply Chain Security Tools - Store: Similar to Tanzu Developer Portal, allocate a fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that can be pointed at the tanzu-system-ingress service. The default host name consists of metadata-store and the shared.ingress_domain value. For example, metadata-store.example.com .

Artifact Metadata Repository: Similar to the Supply Chain Security Tools (SCST) - Store, allocate a fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that can be pointed at the tanzu-system-ingress service. The default host name consists of amr-graphql and the shared.ingress_domain value. For example, amr-graphql.example.com .

Application Live View: If you select the ingressEnabled option, allocate a corresponding fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) that can be pointed at the tanzu-system-ingress service. The default host name consists of appliveview and the shared.ingress_domain value. For example, appliveview.example.com .

Supply Chain Security Tools - Store

Although Tanzu Application Platform includes a default database for Supply Chain Security Tools (SCST) - Store, VMware discourages using it for production deployments. The included database lacks capabilities typically offered by enterprise-grade databases, such as scaling, high availability, and automated backups. VMware recommends using an external database with production level capabilities. For more information about setting up the database for production, see Database configuration .

Tanzu Developer Portal

For Tanzu Developer Portal, you must have:

  • Latest version of Chrome, Firefox, or Edge. Tanzu Developer Portal currently does not support Safari browser.
  • Azure DevOps
  • To install, download the file named Tanzu Developer Portal Blank Catalog . You must extract the catalog to the preceding Git repository of choice. This serves as the configuration location for your organization’s catalog inside Tanzu Developer Portal.
  • The default option uses an in-memory database and is suitable for test and development scenarios. This reads the catalog data from Git URLs that you specify in the tap-values.yaml file. This data is temporary. Any operations that cause the server pod in the tap-gui namespace to be re-created also cause this data to be rebuilt from the Git location. This can cause issues when you manually register entities by using the UI, because they only exist in the database and are lost when that in-memory database gets rebuilt.
  • For production use cases, use a PostgreSQL database that exists outside the Tanzu Application Platform packaging. The PostgreSQL database stores all the catalog data persistently both from the Git locations and the UI manual entity registrations. For more information, see Configure the Tanzu Developer Portal database

Kubernetes cluster requirements

Installation requires Kubernetes cluster v1.26, v1.27, v1.28, v1.29 and v1.30 on one of the following Kubernetes providers:

  • Azure Kubernetes Service.
  • containerd must be used as the Container Runtime Interface (CRI). Some versions of EKS default to Docker as the container runtime and must be changed to containerd.
  • Users currently on EKS Kubernetes version 1.22 must install the Amazon EBS CSI Driver before upgrading to Kubernetes version 1.23 and above. See AWS documentation for more information.
  • AWS Fargate is not supported.
  • GKE Autopilot clusters do not have the required features enabled.
  • GKE clusters that are set up in zonal mode might detect Kubernetes API errors when the GKE control plane is resized after traffic increases. Users can mitigate this by creating a regional cluster with three control-plane nodes right from the start.
  • Tanzu Kubernetes Grid (commonly called TKG) with Standalone Management Cluster. For more information, see the Tanzu Kubernetes Grid documentation .
  • vSphere IaaS control plane (formerly named vSphere with Tanzu) v8.0 Update 1c or later, v7.0 Update 3p or later.
  • For TKGi with NSX, the total number of Kubernetes object labels and other tags created by both TKGi and Tanzu Application Platform can exceed the number allowed by NSX. Create or update your network profile by setting the cni_configurations parameter extensions.ncp.k8s.label_filtering_regex_list . For more information, see the VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid Integrated Edition documentation .

For more information about the supported Kubernetes versions, see Kubernetes version support for Tanzu Application Platform .

Resource requirements

To deploy Tanzu Application Platform packages full profile, your cluster must have at least:

  • 8 GB of RAM available per node to Tanzu Application Platform.
  • 16 vCPUs available across all nodes to Tanzu Application Platform.
  • 100 GB of disk space available per node.
Important Tanzu Application Platform requires a minimum of 120 GB per node of ephemeral storage. If you do not allocate at least this amount of ephemeral storage for kubelet on all cluster nodes, you receive the error minDiskPerNode: some cluster nodes don't meet minimum disk space requirement of '100Gi' . For more information about configuring the storage for a TKG cluster on Supervisor, see v1alpha3 Example: TKC with Default Storage and Node Volumes and v1beta1 Example: Custom Cluster Based on the Default ClusterClass .
  • 12 vCPUs available across all nodes to Tanzu Application Platform.
  • 8 vCPUs available across all nodes to Tanzu Application Platform.

For the full profile or use of Security Chain Security Tools - Store, your cluster must have a configured default StorageClass.

Pod security policies must be configured so that Tanzu Application Platform controller pods can run as root in the following optional configurations:

  • Tanzu Build Service, in which CustomStacks require root privileges. For more information, see Tanzu Build Service documentation .
  • Supply Chain, in which Kaniko usage requires root privileges to build containers.

For more information about pod security policies, see Kubernetes documentation .

Tools and CLI requirements

  • The Kubernetes CLI (kubectl) v1.26, v1.27, v1.28, v1.29 or v1.30 installed and authenticated with admin rights for your target cluster. See Install Tools in the Kubernetes documentation.
  • Install the Tanzu CLI
  • Español – América Latina
  • Português – Brasil
  • Tiếng Việt
