Speaking to others will always be a part of your life. And how good you are at it will determine the outcome of countless opportunities that come your way. Public speaking coaching is the best way to stack the odds in your favor for the rest of your life.
In general, there are two principal reasons to get a professional coach involved.
One, your own personal benefit.
Two, the benefit to your company or team.
A professional coach will help you look, sound, and feel more confident each time you talk whether it’s to one person or an audience of thousands. This way, the gravity in any room shifts towards you, causing people to lean in to hear your message.
If you’re speaking on behalf of a company, then they benefit every time you secure funding, win a big contract, or build trust and respect for the company brand.
This depends on if you’re preparing to write or preparing to deliver. If you’re in the writing phase, make things easier on yourself by doing your research first. Check out our ultimate guide linked below for more tips. Preparing to deliver a speech calls for consistent rehearsal and breathing exercises. If you’re unsure about coaching, our ultimate guide contains public speaking tips that will make the process as comfortable as possible.
Um, uh, actually, literally, and similar filler words are verbal static that your audience has to filter out. Overuse weakens your credibility and dilutes your message. One simple trick is to pause more often and slow down how you speak. Another is simple awareness so ask some friends or colleagues to point out every time you use filler words. Or record yourself when you speak and listen to yourself. Of course, professional speaking training is the most efficient way to overcome this habit.
Moxie Institute will help you find a public speaking style that is best suited for you. Instead of squeezing you into a mold, we see the best results when we enhance your personal strengths through professional speaking coaching.
Yes. But don’t expect to become a carbon copy of whichever speaker you admire. Public speaking greatness comes from authenticity, and authenticity is a unique, individual thing. When you become a great public speaker, you’ll do so in a way that only you can.

I (Archisha) am a Guided Project Instructor and a Beta Tester at Coursera, having tested many courses before they’re officially launched. I have taken over 50 online courses in various subjects. I used my experience as an online learner and teacher to evaluate each course in this list.
Trying to find “the best” can be daunting, even for those of us who live and breathe online courses. Here’s how I approached this task.
First, I combed through Class Central’s Catalog and the internet to find a variety of free and paid open courses, some with certificates.
When choosing courses, I considered the following factors:
Then, I defined the scope for these recommendations and chose top courses from a range of sub-fields.
Ultimately, I used a combination of data and my own judgment to make these picks. I’m confident these recommendations will be a reliable way to learn about public speaking.
Pat revised the research and the latest version of this article.

Few are immune to the fear of public speaking. Marjorie North offers 10 tips for speakers to calm the nerves and deliverable memorable orations.
Snakes? Fine. Flying? No problem. Public speaking? Yikes! Just thinking about public speaking — routinely described as one of the greatest (and most common) fears — can make your palms sweat. But there are many ways to tackle this anxiety and learn to deliver a memorable speech.
In part one of this series, Mastering the Basics of Communication , I shared strategies to improve how you communicate. In part two, How to Communicate More Effectively in the Workplace , I examined how to apply these techniques as you interact with colleagues and supervisors in the workplace. For the third and final part of this series, I’m providing you with public speaking tips that will help reduce your anxiety, dispel myths, and improve your performance.
1. nervousness is normal. practice and prepare.
All people feel some physiological reactions like pounding hearts and trembling hands. Do not associate these feelings with the sense that you will perform poorly or make a fool of yourself. Some nerves are good. The adrenaline rush that makes you sweat also makes you more alert and ready to give your best performance.
The best way to overcome anxiety is to prepare, prepare, and prepare some more. Take the time to go over your notes several times. Once you have become comfortable with the material, practice — a lot. Videotape yourself, or get a friend to critique your performance.
Communication Strategies: Presenting with Impact
Search all Communication programs.
Before you begin to craft your message, consider who the message is intended for. Learn as much about your listeners as you can. This will help you determine your choice of words, level of information, organization pattern, and motivational statement.
Create the framework for your speech. Write down the topic, general purpose, specific purpose, central idea, and main points. Make sure to grab the audience’s attention in the first 30 seconds.
Keep the focus on the audience. Gauge their reactions, adjust your message, and stay flexible. Delivering a canned speech will guarantee that you lose the attention of or confuse even the most devoted listeners.
Be yourself, don’t become a talking head — in any type of communication. You will establish better credibility if your personality shines through, and your audience will trust what you have to say if they can see you as a real person.
Inject a funny anecdote in your presentation, and you will certainly grab your audience’s attention. Audiences generally like a personal touch in a speech. A story can provide that.
Reading from a script or slide fractures the interpersonal connection. By maintaining eye contact with the audience, you keep the focus on yourself and your message. A brief outline can serve to jog your memory and keep you on task.
Nonverbal communication carries most of the message. Good delivery does not call attention to itself, but instead conveys the speaker’s ideas clearly and without distraction.
Do you enjoy hearing a speech start with “Today I’m going to talk to you about X”? Most people don’t. Instead, use a startling statistic, an interesting anecdote, or concise quotation. Conclude your speech with a summary and a strong statement that your audience is sure to remember.
Too many can break the direct connection to the audience, so use them sparingly. They should enhance or clarify your content, or capture and maintain your audience’s attention.
Good communication is never perfect, and nobody expects you to be perfect. However, putting in the requisite time to prepare will help you deliver a better speech. You may not be able to shake your nerves entirely, but you can learn to minimize them.

The unexpected absence of an FC Barcelona first team star from training has fueled talk that he could be sold in the coming days.
With not much over 24 hours until the Blaugrana makes its 2024/2025 La Liga home debut against Athletic Club at the Montjuic Stadium, Andreas Christensen didn't report for training at the Joan Gamper CT on Thursday morning in Catalonia.
Such a development has fueled rumors that the club might be in talks to sell the Dane.
After all, Mika Faye recently missed training and is now on the verge of joining Rennes as reported by various outlets including Mundo Deportivo .
Last weekend, Ilkay Gundogan was a surprise ommission from Hansi Flick's Matchday 1 squad that traveled to Valencia for the Catalans' season opener.
Gerard Romero tweeted that anonymous club sources told him 'Gundo' would sit out the eventual 2-1 win because of a blow to the eyebrow picked up in the Joan Gamper Trophy loss to AS Monaco almost a fortnight ago.
As we now know, though, Gundogan is off on his way back to former club Manchester City as revealed by The Athletic .
Wwe smackdown results, winners and grades on august 23, 2024, 3 ‘self-control’ strategies to master your impulses—by a psychologist.
Despite him being one of the top performers in 2023/2024, Barca will let the midfielder rejoin City for free as he recinds a contract that had around two years remaining on it.
Barca paid nothing for Gundogan 14 months ago because he arrived on a free transfer, but it should ideally look to make something on a figure that has proven himself to still belong in the elite at the age of 33.
At least if Christensen is sold, Barca wants to receive money for the centre back and pivot.
Like with Gundogan, Barca paid nothing for his services two summers ago when his Chelsea deal expired, and this week has seen reports from SPORT on Barca being open to a sale as it needs to balance the books to register new signing Dani Olmo.
According to the same outlet , however, Christensen's absence has nothing to do with transfer negotiations and can instead be explained by him suffering some physical discomfort, which has been corroborated by MARCA too.

Background: Brain-computer interfaces can enable communication for people with paralysis by transforming cortical activity associated with attempted speech into text on a computer screen. Communication with brain-computer interfaces has been restricted by extensive training requirements and limited accuracy.
Methods: A 45-year-old man with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) with tetraparesis and severe dysarthria underwent surgical implantation of four microelectrode arrays into his left ventral precentral gyrus 5 years after the onset of the illness; these arrays recorded neural activity from 256 intracortical electrodes. We report the results of decoding his cortical neural activity as he attempted to speak in both prompted and unstructured conversational contexts. Decoded words were displayed on a screen and then vocalized with the use of text-to-speech software designed to sound like his pre-ALS voice.
Results: On the first day of use (25 days after surgery), the neuroprosthesis achieved 99.6% accuracy with a 50-word vocabulary. Calibration of the neuroprosthesis required 30 minutes of cortical recordings while the participant attempted to speak, followed by subsequent processing. On the second day, after 1.4 additional hours of system training, the neuroprosthesis achieved 90.2% accuracy using a 125,000-word vocabulary. With further training data, the neuroprosthesis sustained 97.5% accuracy over a period of 8.4 months after surgical implantation, and the participant used it to communicate in self-paced conversations at a rate of approximately 32 words per minute for more than 248 cumulative hours.
Conclusions: In a person with ALS and severe dysarthria, an intracortical speech neuroprosthesis reached a level of performance suitable to restore conversational communication after brief training. Jason Chow , associate professor of special education and of hearing and speech sciences, received two training grants for $2.49 and $3.72 million from the Office of Special Education Programs in the U.S. Department of Education to prepare leadership personnel in special education.
Rachel Schles , assistant professor of the practice of special education, received a $1.23 million training grant from the Tennessee Department of Education for a Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) endorsement program— Vanderbilt Peabody College’s first low-residency teacher education program.
Project Sustain is a $2.49 million collaboration between faculty at Vanderbilt University and the University of Maryland to prepare highly qualified leaders in special education to be experts in the use, implementation, and sustainability of evidence-based practices in schools to strengthen the outcomes of high-needs children with disabilities. Students in the doctoral program will be trained as scholar-practitioners to directly address the research-to-practice gap and to use implementation frameworks in the design of high-quality research that aims to address issues of adoption and sustainment of “what works.” They will learn to conceptualize and conduct rigorous research focused on adopting, implementing, and sustaining evidence-based practices in classrooms, schools, and across educational systems.
Chow is the project director. His Vanderbilt colleagues on the grant are Kristen Granger, assistant professor of special education, and Jennifer Ledford, associate professor of special education. University of Maryland faculty are Veronica Kang, assistant professor of special education, and Jade Wexler, professor of special education. The project will train eight Ph.D. scholars, with each institution training four students in the program over the course of four years.
Project Intersect is a $3.72 million doctoral leadership grant. Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Texas Christian University, and San Diego State University are collaborating to provide rigorous Ph.D. training to three speech-language pathology scholars at each institution. They will develop the knowledge and skills to improve outcomes for high-need, linguistically diverse students with disabilities who receive school speech-language services. The goal of this training grant is to support scholars and future leaders who have expertise in special education systems and research. In their academic-research careers, Intersect scholars will increase the quality of research evidence on how to improve outcomes for students with disabilities receiving school speech-language pathology services and teach undergraduate and graduate pre-service speech-language pathologists and school-based professionals who serve high-need, linguistically diverse students with disabilities.
Chow is a co-principal investigator on the grant in his role as associate professor of hearing and speech sciences at VUMC. His collaborators are Melanie Schuele, professor of hearing and speech sciences at VUMC; Emily Lund, associate professor of speech-language pathology at TCU; and Alyson Abel-Mills, associate professor of speech-language pathology at SDSU.
The Endorsements in Vision Across Tennessee (EVA-TN) project responds to the need to address the shortage of Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) throughout the state, particularly in high-need locales. The Visual Disabilities teacher training program at Peabody College will provide high-quality and rigorous training for current Tennessee teachers to become TVIs. Importantly, as Peabody’s first low-residency teacher education program, 75 percent of EVA-TN’s classes will be remote, and students in the program will only be required to attend in-person classes in Nashville once a month during the fall and spring semesters and more frequently in the summer. This hybrid schedule will give teachers across the state the flexibility to earn this critical endorsement and a master of education while continuing to teach in their communities. Working teachers will complete the two-year program through a combination of coursework, practicum experiences, and enrichment activities.
The grant covers full tuition for 20 scholars. The first cohort of eight students began the program in June. The second cohort will begin in June 2026. Rachel Schles, assistant professor of the practice of special education, is the principal investigator on the grant.

The personable style of new Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his first National Day Rally speech was well received, but experts cautioned that the reset in social safety net policies he outlined could seem incremental rather than the radical change some had anticipated.
Wong’s policy reset included a long-awaited unemployment payment scheme, increasing state-sponsored parental leave by 10 weeks and a new training allowance for Singaporeans aged 40 and above who take time off from work to study.
“A large part of the changes is enhancement of what is already in place,” sociologist Tan Ern Ser told This Week in Asia. “However, the measure to support retrenched workers and facilitate their [return] employment is new, though it comes without compromising the fundamentals of workfare, as opposed to welfare.”
While these policies will come with a hefty price tag, Singapore is likely to be able to foot the bill with its sustainable budget model, analysts say.
During Sunday’s rally, Wong addressed Singapore in Malay, Mandarin and English, in one of the city state’s key political speeches and the first major one he has given since his swearing-in speech in May. Wong took over the reins from Lee Hsien Loong, the son of founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew.
Wong spoke at length about his personal life, including difficulties adjusting to his kindergarten as a child and attending neighbourhood schools.
Nydia Ngiow, managing director of Singapore at BowerGroupAsia, said Wong took “great effort to position himself as a ‘fellow Singaporean’ rather than the prime minister”.
“By sharing several personal anecdotes and taking a self-deprecating approach to his Malay and Mandarin skills, Wong’s campaign to make himself and his team more authentic and personable to win over younger voters was in full swing,” she added.
Former Nominated Member of Parliament Zulkifli Baharudin noted that Wong differed from his predecessor in the social circumstances of his upbringing. “Wong comes from a background that Lee Hsien Loong didn’t. When it comes to connecting to people and that emotional connection, his background enables him to connect with a wide range of Singaporeans.”
Zulkifli said while Wong was a “very good successor” to Lee with regard to continuity in their ideologies, he had hoped for more of a reset in terms of atmosphere and optics.
Wong, like Lee, spoke in the three languages, at the same venue and time, and structured his speech similarly, Zulkifli noted.
“The world is going through major changes so I expected a bit more of a transformative persona. It would have been a breath of fresh air which could have helped in the way the policies are received by some. However, because he’s seen as a continuum of the past, then those changes appear incremental instead of radically transformative,” he said.
Wong on Sunday said Singapore would implement financial support for those who lost their jobs, disbursing a maximum of S$6,000 (US$4,580) over a period of up to six months, and increase state-sponsored parental leave by 10 weeks.
Singaporeans aged 40 and above who take time off from work to study would also benefit from a new training allowance scheme next year, with each worker able to receive up to S$3,000 per month for 24 months.
Tan Wen Wei, an analyst covering Asia from the Economist Intelligence Unit, called the financial support for jobseekers a “substantial policy shift”.
“For many years, Singapore, which prides itself on meritocracy and self-reliance, deliberated on unemployment benefits with the concern that it will disincentivise the unemployed from getting a job,” Tan said.
The scheme should benefit workers whose jobs have become more vulnerable due to technological changes such as artificial intelligence and automation, Tan added.
Suan Teck Kin, head of research and executive director of global economics and markets research at UOB, noted that the rise of AI and the geopolitical climate will cause disruptions to the job market.
“All these things the government is putting in place now are investments in to reskill and upskill people. If they don’t invest in this now, the problems down the road will cost much more,” he said.
“Wong’s starting point is that social mobility is available for everyone, like it was for him, regardless of where you started and what setbacks you face.”
Suan noted, however, that it was likely there would be conditions attached to retrenched workers receiving the full amount of S$6,000.
Data from Singapore’s manpower ministry showed there were 14,590 retrenchments in 2023, more than double the 6,440 in 2022. There were 8,020 lay-offs in 2021. In the first quarter of this year, there were 3,030 retrenchments, while preliminary data suggested there were 3,100 in the second quarter.
Suan estimates that the scheme will cost close to S$200 million, assuming the retrenchments continue for two quarters, and each retrenched person receives the maximum of S$6,000 for the entire six months. This “is not going to be a tremendous stretch” on Singapore’s budget, Suan said.
DBS economist Chua Han Teng noted that the current budget indicated increased spending for Forward Singapore policy initiatives, totalling close to S$40 billion by the end of the decade. This is likely to have included funding the jobseeker support scheme and training allowances.
Forward Singapore was the nationwide feedback exercise spanning 16 months and involving discussions with some 200,000 people.
“These initiatives were likely factored into the government’s projections of rising spending until 2030. The government’s assessment that it can maintain a balanced budget over the coming years suggests that revenues are expected to be sufficient to fund these Forward Singapore policy initiatives,” Chua said.
Political observers noted that despite the efforts to widen the social safety net, Wong’s rally speech indicated an election was unlikely to happen this year, with the prime minister alluding that more details of the new policies would be announced later. Singapore’s next general election must be held by November 2025.
“A lot of the details have not been revealed and [are] likely going to be further developed as the government looks to prepare Budget 2025, so in that regard the general election is likely to take place only after then,” Ngiow said.
