The School Playground

  • Essay > English Essay >

There is a good playground in our school. It is just close to the school. It has green grass looking like green velvet all round the ground.

There are green shrubs which are beautifully trimmed. There is a gardener to water and look after it. It is divided into 4 parts. We play football, hockey, cricket and volleyball. It is compulsory for every student to take part in games. Each game is in the charge of a teacher. The games begin at half past five.

It is pleasant sight to see all the students at play. The headmaster and the Teachers join the games. There is a wave of joy and happiness everywhere. All look  bright happy and jolly.

Why do School Grounds Matter?

School grounds play a vital role in a child’s development

It is widely acknowledged that children require time in the outdoors for their physical, mental and general well-being. However, with less open green spaces for children to play in and an increase in parental concerns over safety, today’s generation of children are leading increasingly indoor, sedentary and virtual lifestyles.

This is causing a direct impact not only on our children’s physical health and emotional well-being, but also on their social competences and connection to the natural world.

According to Parenting Science , there is no one-size-fits-all solution but overall, outdoor play provides a multitude of benefits for a child’s development:

  • A reduced risk of myopia, or nearsightedness.
  • Greater exposure to bright light, which enhances health and mental performance.
  • Increased activity levels and greater freedom to run, jump and climb.
  • Opportunities for hand-on learning about physical forces and concepts.
  • Reduced stress levels, better moods and improved concentration.
  • More naturally-attuned sleep rhythms.
  • Enhanced opportunities to learn social skills, overcome fears, and develop a lifelong connection with nature.

Further research has continued to show that outdoor learning and play can tackle many of the issues associated with the state of modern childhood. Moreover, pupils now spend up to 25% of their time at school outside, school grounds matter substantially !

Despite these strong facts, school grounds around the nation are still often underused and undervalued.

School grounds have a profound impact on a child

How school grounds are used, or sadly in many cases – not used – and the aesthetics of the grounds both have a direct effect on how the children feel about the school and themselves. This happens because children understand school grounds as places created especially for them. In addition to this, because children read messages and meanings from their surroundings, the value placed on the grounds again, reflects on how the children feel about the school and themselves.

essay on school ground

The value placed on the use of school grounds and their appearance has a profound impact on many factors:

  • How a child feels about themselves
  • How a child feels about others around them
  • How a child feels about their school
  • A child’s behaviour and attitude towards themselves
  • A child’s behaviour and attitude towards others around them

Schools that actively work to improve their school grounds have also reported:

  • Improvements in child behaviour
  • Improvements in children’s attitude to learning
  • Improved social interaction between children
  • Increased creative learning and environmental awareness
  • Increased inclusiveness for children at all ages and levels

All of these improvements are key elements to unlocking the development and learning potential of children in schools across the nation who are missing out on this opportunity.

Unlocking the potential of your existing school grounds

If you are a teacher at a primary school in Scotland and you are thinking “where would we start?” there are endless opportunities to enhance and maximise existing spaces for outdooring learning and play.

School grounds are an incredible resource!

  • School grounds are accessible and safe
  • They require no additional staff
  • No additional transport is required
  • There is no requirement for parental consent or forms
  • There is no additional cost!

In addition to the above operational benefits, school grounds offer a wide range of unique opportunities and experiences for learning across all curriculum areas – all year round! Yes, it’s true!

And the benefits don’t stop there, outdoor play and learning also provides endless advantages for school staff, allowing them to be creative in their teaching by adding a new dimension to lessons that is simply not possible indoors.

essay on school ground

Stepping out of the classroom, into the bright sunshine and outdoors will provide children at school with the freedom to move, to roam, to express themselves and to grow. Combining education with the outdoors helps children engage in their learning. In many cases, the children who do not show as much engagement inside the classroom respond positively to being outdoors and participate more actively than before.

There are many benefits of learning outdoors and we understand that school grounds play a huge role in providing this type of learning environment that children so desperately need.

Children who struggle in the classroom will flourish in an outdoor environment, as it provides a unique opportunity to learn in a different way.

School grounds can also be a great way for children to connect with the natural world. This connection with nature has shown to be important for emotional well-being, having a calming restorative effect on pupils.

Any adult would testify that these skills and characteristics are invaluable traits to own in order to live a happy, healthy life.

My School Playground

Our school playground is the best playground in our locality. It is well maintained by the school authorities and it is very clean too. It is well equipped with all the facilities that are required for a good playground. The equipment include a see-saw, a swing, a slide, a jungle gym and many more. We also have a sandpit where we can play games like volleyball, badminton and cricket.

The playground is very spacious and it is surrounded by a fence so that we can play without any fear. We also have a big garden in our school where we can sit and relax during the breaks. The playground is very well lit and there are no sharp objects lying around. It is the best place to play and have fun.

School playground is used for other purposes as well. We organize seminars and workshops in the playground. We also have our annual sports day in the playground. The ground is also used for scout and guide camping

We enjoy our recess and lunch breaks in the playground. We also have many competitions in the playground like races, lemon-spoon race, three-legged race, etc. We also have a mini marathon every year which is conducted by the school authorities. The playground is the best place to play and have fun. It is the best place to stay active and healthy.

Essay on Why Playground is Important in School:

Playgrounds have been a staple in schools for decades, providing children with a space to run, play and be active. However, with the rise of technology and an increasing focus on academics, playgrounds are often overlooked and considered less important than other aspects of school life. In this essay, we will explore why playgrounds are crucial in the development of children and why they should remain an integral part of schools.

First and foremost, playgrounds provide children with a much-needed break from the structured and often sedentary nature of classroom learning. Recess time allows students to release pent-up energy, socialize with their peers, and engage in physical activities that promote gross motor skills development. This is crucial for their overall well-being as studies have shown that regular physical activity can improve mental health and academic performance. By providing children with a designated space to play, schools are not only promoting healthy habits but also allowing students to recharge their minds and bodies for the next lesson.

In addition to physical benefits, playgrounds also play a significant role in social development. Through unstructured play, children learn how to interact with each other, negotiate, and solve conflicts. This is especially important in today’s digital age, where children are often more comfortable communicating through screens rather than face-to-face interactions. On the playground, they learn valuable skills such as empathy, teamwork, and leadership that are essential for their personal growth. Moreover, playgrounds also offer opportunities for students of different ages to interact and learn from each other, fostering a sense of community and inclusivity within the school.

Playgrounds also serve as a natural learning environment for children. Whether it’s through imaginative play or organized games, children use their creativity and problem-solving skills to navigate and make sense of the world around them. They learn about cause and effect, spatial awareness, and develop critical thinking abilities.

Furthermore, playgrounds can also be used for outdoor lessons, where students can apply what they have learned in the classroom to real-life situations. This not only reinforces academic concepts but also allows for a more hands-on and engaging learning experience.

Lastly, playgrounds provide a sense of joy and happiness for children. Play is essential for their emotional well-being, allowing them to express themselves freely and explore their interests and passions.

It is a crucial outlet for stress relief, which can be especially beneficial for children who may be dealing with difficult personal or academic challenges. By providing a safe and fun environment to play in, schools are promoting a positive school culture and enhancing the overall student experience.

In conclusion, playgrounds are an essential part of schools and should not be overlooked or undervalued. They offer numerous physical, social, academic, and emotional benefits that contribute to the holistic development of children. As educators and parents, it is our responsibility to recognize the importance of play and ensure that playgrounds remain a fundamental aspect of school life for generations to come.

My School Essay 500 Words

The place where children as the leaders of tomorrow study and where the future of the nation is shaped are called schools. Education is an essential weapon for tomorrow, so the good schools of today are important for the best future of a nation. Schools are the center of learning where we attend classes on various subjects, interact with the teachers, get our queries

answered, and appeared in exams. In my school, learning is more like a fun activity, because of the extra-talented teaching staff.

My school is a government primary school located on the outskirts of the city. Usually, when people think about a government school, they perceive it to be at an isolated location and have poor basic amenities and teaching facilities. But, despite being a government school, my school defies all such speculations. Teachers of my school are not only knowledgeable about the subjects they teach but also are skilled enough to teach through fun activities. For example, our physics teacher explains every concept by stating real-life examples that we could relate to. This way we not only understand the subject better. Moreover, not a moment I remember, when any teacher had ever replied rudely to any of the students. They always patiently listen and provide answers to all the queries posed to them. Learning at my school is fun and it is made possible only because of the teachers.

My school is very important in my life, in a way even more than my family. My family gives me love, care, and affection, and provides for all my other essential needs. But, all of this isn’t enough to make me a good human being and succeed in life.  Favorably, I am lucky enough to be enrolled in a prestigious school, and gaining a wonderful education, looking forward to realizing my dreams one day. The most necessary for success in life is education, and only my school provides it to me. Without my school and the education that it gives, I would be like a confused and wandering soul, almost aimless in life.

My school helps with my educational and overall personality development. It imparts education through classes, tests, and exams to teach me how to conduct myself confidently. It just feels so great to be in my school and be a part of everyday activities, be it lectures, sports, or Something else. While in school, I always feel happy, confident, enthusiastic, and loved. I make friends at school, those whom I will never forget and will always love them. My family supports my materialistic needs, but school is the place where my actual physical, social, and mental development takes place.  I know that every question that crosses my mind will be answered by my teachers. I also know that my school friends will always be at my side whenever I need them to be. As much as the studies, my school also stresses much on These activities as the management thinks that extracurricular activities are very essential for our overall personality development. My school provides dedicated teachers and staff for each extracurricular activity. We have a big sports ground with kits for all the major sports; a covered auditorium for dance and music and a separate basketball court.

The role my school plays in my personality development is fantastic. It not only imparts education in me but also teaches me how to conduct myself and how to behave decently and properly. I get trained in all the other necessary skills of life, like how to keep calm in challenging situations and help others as well. My school teaches me to be a good and evolved human being, to stay composed and progressive always. It also teaches me to be kind and generous to others and not differentiate them based on their caste, religion, ethnicity, or other divisions. These are some of the most essential personality traits that my school imparts to me, something that I will always be thankful for. Every time I think of my school, I think of it as a temple of education. A temple, where my soul meets education, making my life more meaningful and useful to society and the nation as well. It is a place where my aspirations get a wing and I get the strength and confidence to realize them. No other place in the entire world could replace my school and the role that it plays in my life. I will always be thankful to my friends, teachers, and the staff of my school, for making it such a comfortable and Educational place of learning.

Physical Development

At the heart of playgrounds lies the promotion of physical activity, crucial for developing gross motor skills, balance, and coordination. Climbing structures strengthen muscles, while swings promote sensory integration and spatial awareness. The varied terrain encourages exploration, enhancing agility and proprioception. The Importance of School Playgrounds

the importance of school playgrounds

School playgrounds are essential for fostering play and collaboration. They provide kids with a designated area to play and learn. Playing on a playground also allows kids to build developmental skills and explore new things. Plus, playgrounds allow students to get exercise during the school day. Keep reading to learn about the history of school playgrounds and discover their importance.

The History of School Playgrounds

Playgrounds for schools have a rich history in the United States. Parks have long had a place in public spaces as foundational spaces for socializing and community building. In the past, people even had picnics and visited with each other in the neighborhood cemeteries. Plus, before Industrialization, humans lived a more pastoral life on the whole, with many people living on plots of land where their children would play.

Industrialization changed many things about human existence, including outdoor socialization. With the beginning of larger farms, families who relied on their small farms lost business and had to move to the cities. This move happened so quickly, and so many people moved to the cities that the quality of living conditions decreased rapidly. As a result, welfare organizations decided to begin a movement to provide spaces for children to play and enjoy the outdoors outside of their cramped and often unsanitary living quarters.

The playground movement gained traction  beginning in Boston, Massachusetts, in the 1800s. The motivations behind this movement were to provide areas where children could practice becoming responsible citizens. These early playground designers took inspiration from German outdoor gymnasiums , which aimed to promote fitness and lower diseases in children by placing play equipment near schools.

Outdoor gymnasiums and sand gardens later developed into more dynamic apparatuses that swung and spun. This early playground equipment featured steel pipes, chains and ladders, many of which would be considered extremely dangerous by today’s standards.

In the later 20th century, child psychologists, doctors and other health specialists began to think about how playgrounds could assist in children’s social, emotional and physical development. They found that certain playground elements were able to excite the fascination and imagination of children , such as fantasy elements and interesting features. Additionally, there began to be a larger focus on safety , so equipment began to have more rounded edges and soft ground cover to prevent injuries.

Types of Playgrounds

There are hundreds of different types of playground configurations, so narrowing playgrounds into a few types can be tricky. However, there are a few specific playground categories to recognize when considering different types of school playgrounds. Here are two main playground categories:

Age Group Playgrounds

height and other components help make sure kids are safe

The first relevant category refers to the age range. While most people think of playgrounds as intergenerational spaces, specific safety concerns exist for children of different ages. As a result, most safety considerations take a few other age groups into account:

  • Early childhood 5 and under:   Children under 5  have unique needs regarding playground equipment. These children are still developing their abilities to run, jump and play, so this playground equipment has special considerations. Factors like height and other components help make sure kids are safe while allowing them to participate in fun and engaging activities.
  • School-age 5 to 12:   Kids in the 5 to 12 range  have developed most of their physical capacities, so they’re able to run and jump with relative ease without assistance. These playgrounds may have more daring climbing elements and heights to present fun challenges for these children. These playgrounds may pose certain risks for children under 5 years old, so having a separate play space for younger children is crucial.
  • School-age 9 and up:  Since some older kids may not want to play on the playground anymore, they can play on fitness equipment. Manufacturers design  fitness equipment to provide  spaces for guided stretches and bodyweight activities that build strength and can encourage collaboration.

Themed Playgrounds

Another essential consideration when it comes to playgrounds is the designated theme. Some of the best playgrounds for kids have a unique theme that can inspire creativity and imagination. There are a variety of exciting and fun themes you can organize your playground around:

  • Natural:  A natural theme plays on elements from the natural world, using trees, rocks and even dinosaur bones as inspiration for playground equipment. These nature-themed playgrounds often  feature rope courses and boulders  to climb on. Kids can pretend they’re exploring a magical forest or discovering dinosaurs on a digging expedition.
  • Nautical:  Preparing for a long sea voyage? Children will love playing on  nautical-themed playground equipment  and pretending to travel the seas with components like steering wheels, portholes and even a whole ship.
  • Modern:  A modern playground features more geometric patterns and shapes, with play cubes and netting. These playgrounds offer dynamic and unique climbing elements and  spinning structures  to engage and excite children.

Why Are Playgrounds Important in School?

essay on school ground

There are many reasons a  school or  daycare playground  is a great idea. School playgrounds can help students grow into healthy young adults, from building valuable social skills to strengthening foundational muscle groups. Here are some benefits of playgrounds  for  school-aged kids  and reasons why schools need playgrounds:

Promotes Creativity and Imagination

Playtime is the perfect opportunity for kids to stretch their imaginations and show creativity. School playgrounds can enhance kids’ creativity and give them a new world to explore. Playground equipment has multiple elements that can stimulate imaginative and creative play, like slides, climbing equipment and swings. Kids can play everyday playground favorites — like king of the castle and hide-and-seek — or invent their own games to play.

Creative, unstructured playground play allows kids to have fun without someone else’s rules.

Develops Motor Skills

While kids think they’re just playing and having fun on a playground, they’re developing a wide range of essential motor skills, like coordination and balance. Certain school playground equipment pieces help kids build their balance, coordination, muscle movements and more.

For example, some playgrounds may feature climbing elements, which help children build their arm and leg strength, balance and coordination. Swings can help children fine-tune motor skills as they grip the ropes or chains and hang on while swinging in the air. Here’s how kids can develop essential motor skills while playing on a playground:

  • Gross motor skills:  Gross motor skills involve moving the arms, legs and torso muscle groups. These muscle groups allow kids to walk, run, jump, throw, kick and lift. Playground equipment like climbing walls, slides and swings help kids develop strength in their upper body, legs and abdomen. Developing these skills allows kids to build muscle and increase their body awareness.
  • Coordination:  Many pieces of playground equipment encourage the development of coordination because kids have to coordinate movements between multiple parts of their bodies. For example, swinging requires coordination of the hands, arms and legs. A child must learn to grip the chains with their hands while simultaneously pumping their legs to generate the swinging movement. Playgrounds help children build coordination skills that will help them throughout their lives.

Develops Cognitive Abilities

essay on school ground

Playing on a  playground helps stimulate nerve cells in the brain , which allows more connections to develop. The brain is continually evolving into adulthood, and play early in childhood can enable kids to make connections that aid in developing gross and fine motor skills. As kids grow and play, they’ll continue developing real-life skills like decision-making and problem-solving.

School playgrounds are great for kids to learn new vocabulary and language skills. Kids can learn new language skills from other kids by playing with and around them. They’ll learn to have conversations, listen when others talk and verbalize thoughts and feelings. Kids can also apply learned language skills through modeling and repetition on the playground. Narrating their actions on the playground is an excellent way for kids to put words into their activities. For example, saying aloud, “I’m sliding down the green slide,” can help kids conceptualize their actions.

Promotes Sensory Development

In school, teachers work hard to engage students. However, being outside can engage senses that are not practical in a classroom setting. Playing outside can build children’s connection to their senses — new sights, smells, textures and sounds can  help make nerve connections  in the brain. These connections will help develop children’s sensory awareness in addition to assisting them to explore and grow in their curiosity.

Playgrounds for schools help children engage all their senses, which extends their learning outside the classroom. Playing outside allows them to explore leaves, grass, flowers and even insects if they’re adventurous.

Develops Social and Emotional Skills

essay on school ground

School playgrounds are also ideal play areas for building emotional and social skills. Kids learn to get along with their peers and play together through unstructured social interactions.

For example, kids may engage in conversation while swinging or playing games. In other instances, they’ll have to work together to accomplish something, like rotating the merry-go-round. They’ll also have to communicate to avoid conflict. For example, they will have to communicate who gets to go first down the slide or determine who gets the first turn on the seesaw.

As kids learn, disagreements and conflicts may arise. If emotions get high, a responsible adult can step in and coach them to find a solution to the issue. Kids may disagree, argue and challenge each other on the playground. While some arguments may need adult mediation, kids will begin resolving these issues independently. When given the opportunity, kids will develop the  necessary skills to work through their differences  with each other and resolve their conflicts.

At the playground, kids engage with different children and can learn about others’ experiences. These skills will help build empathy and encourage them to relate to others as they grow. As children engage in various social situations on the playground, they learn valuable lessons about frustration, empathy, sharing, communicating and helping others.

Learning to accept others’ differences and be empathetic toward everyone in the playground community prepares kids for working with various people throughout their life and in the workplace. Here are some social and emotional skills that kids can learn on playgrounds:

  • Communication
  • Collaboration
  • Cooperation
  • Respecting boundaries

Promotes Community Awareness

Playgrounds promote community awareness by helping children build bonds with each other. While there may be students from a variety of  different backgrounds and of various abilities , there may be limited opportunities for kids to interact with others who may differ from them. The playground is where the students become a community and get first-hand experiences learning about others’ differences and how to interact with them. Children of all ethnicities, types of families, ability levels and ages can play together on the playground.

Additionally, while cooperating with other children at a playground, kids can build their leadership and communication skills, which are essential to participating in the community as responsible citizens.

Increases Physical and Immune Health

essay on school ground

Many studies have documented the numerous benefits of exercise for children’s health. Playgrounds incorporate many different physical activities that stimulate children’s imagination in a way that gets them moving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that  physical exercise has a host of benefits  for children, including:

  • Improving cardiorespiratory health.
  • Building strong bones.
  • Increasing muscle development.
  • Reducing anxiety and stress.

Playing on a playground can also help strengthen children’s immune systems because it promotes physical activity and health. According to studies, playgrounds with natural elements and diverse greenery can  improve children’s immune systems in a month . Children with stronger immune systems can fight off infections and bacteria more easily. While it may seem counter-intuitive that an outdoor playground can help children avoid getting sick, exposure to various germs in the outdoors teaches their immune systems how to fight off sickness more quickly.

Encourages Outdoor Learning and Play

The outdoors is host to enormous opportunities for children to play and grow. Many different school curricula incorporate the outdoors in their lesson plans. This is especially common for science classes. The  benefits of outdoor play  are many, including  building a connection to the environment  and stimulating the senses in a brand-new way.

Using the playground during class can help reinforce science lessons, such as studying the different animals and plants native to the area. Teachers can set up a scavenger hunt outside to find various species of plants or encourage students to create their own “habitats” in a glass jar.

If there’s space, the playground can also host a small outdoor garden where children can learn about growing food and the benefits of a healthy diet. Furthermore, subjects like math, art and even music can host lessons in the playground to provide a refreshing and stimulating environment for learning. Outdoor play can also help children discover their place in the natural world and form a foundation for critical academic concepts such as biology, geology and physics.

Gives Kids a Break From Electronics

essay on school ground

Modern kids live in a world in which electronics surround them. While being tech-savvy can be positive, many kids lack time away from their screens. The beauty of an outdoor playground is the ability to get away from technology and the distractions of screens. Here are some  benefits of getting children away from their screens , tablets and televisions:

  • Better sleep:  Children’s activities on screens, such as playing games and watching shows, stimulate the brain. While some games or shows may have educational content, this kind of brain stimulation can impact sleep. Getting children outdoors and reducing this screen time can result in better sleep.
  • Improved behavior:  Researchers have also found that kids who spend less time on screens show improved behavior outcomes. Having an outlet like physical activity can help kids behave better.
  • Healthier habits:  Another study found that children who spend less time on screens tended to have a lower unhealthy weight gain.
  • Better interaction:  Kids can interact with others face-to-face on the playground and experience real-life scenarios that electronics can’t give them.

Builds Self-Esteem and Confidence

One of the most positive school playground benefits is that it can build self-esteem and confidence. Many elements of a playground challenge children, both physically and mentally. While it’s important to have  age-appropriate playground equipment  so it’s as safe as possible, incorporating challenging elements is also essential. When kids can overcome these challenges, it builds their confidence and self-esteem.

Activities like climbing up a wall or hanging from a swinging bar can be challenging for kids, but they can also help to build their tolerance for trying new things they may find scary. It can also build relationships with others through taking risks together. Trying new things on the playground can make them more willing to learn and persist in their schoolwork, even when it’s challenging.

How Playgrounds Help Kids in the Classroom

essay on school ground

In addition to making school more fun, playgrounds can benefit kids in the classroom. You can use playgrounds to help improve students’ performance and behavior. The CDC supports the correlation between play and school and focuses on demonstrating how  recess benefits students  in the following ways:

Improves Memory and Concentration

The increased blood flow during  physical activity helps send more oxygen  to the brain. With increased blood flow and oxygen in the brain, the memory and learning areas of the brain can grow more and see a boost in nerve connectivity, leading to increased memory retention and improved attention span. Recess and concentration in the classroom directly connect, which means a recess break can help kids absorb the information they’re learning more effectively.

Helps Kids Stay on Task

Kids naturally have shorter attention spans than adults, so getting distracted from a task is easy. A good rule of thumb is that kids can focus on a task for  about two to five minutes  every year they are old. For example, a 10-year-old might be able to concentrate on something for 20-50 minutes. Playground time can give children’s brains a break and help them stay on task. Playgrounds allow kids to lean into their body’s natural energy levels to stay on task in the classroom and let loose outside.

Reduces Disruptive Behavior

Sitting in class for long periods allows energy to build up inside students, increasing the likelihood that kids will act out during a class. Disruptive behavior can affect the educational experience for everyone in the classroom, including the teacher. Playgrounds allow kids to burn off their energy in the middle of the day rather than letting it continue to build up. Releasing this pent-up energy  reduces disruptions and distractions  in the classroom so everyone can focus.

Increases Academic Performance

Another benefit of outdoor play for children includes increasing academic performance. Playgrounds have challenging elements that build skill and confidence, which can then translate to school performance. When kids are familiar with trying new things and challenging themselves, they become more willing to exert themselves in school.

Adventures on a playground can build children’s tolerance for difficulty and failure while promoting endurance and persistence in facing challenges. These skills are invaluable when learning new concepts in school. Studies show outdoor playground play can help build cognitive skills, especially in STEM subjects.

The Importance of Playgrounds in Schools

Placeholder alt text

Today's schools are not only tasked with preparing children for their future careers, but also teaching essential life skills, habits and attitudes that will help them successfully navigate adulthood. To do this and provide the best learning experience for students requires both indoor instruction and outdoor physical activity.

essay on school ground

By creating an environment where children can experience unstructured play, you're not only supporting their physical health but also increasing their chances to succeed in the classroom. Kids pay more attention to academic tasks when they are given frequent, brief opportunities for free play. Recess can also have a calming effect helping with disciplinary issues and impulse control.

Unstructured physical activity on the playground helps kids become smarter, healthier and stronger.

Importance of Play at School

It might look like just play, but when kids are active and running around a playground they are building critical developmental skills. Playgrounds provide the opportunity for children to practice skills that will ultimately play a role in adult competencies such as the ability to collaborate with others, develop decision making skills, and successfully take on leadership roles, persevere in the face of distractions, and generate creative ideas.

essay on school ground

As children play, they are learning persistence, patience, how to cope with frustration, to share with others, practice empathy and express their thoughts and ideas. These are all critical life skills that will help a child with his or her social interactions in school, within a wider community, among friends and eventually in the workplace and adult relationships.

According to Play in Natural Environments: A pilot study quantifying the behavior of children on playground equipment (2017), a well-designed, sensory-rich playground, supports children's development across multiple domains and can elicit positive behaviors for children of all abilities. Physical Activity and Children’s Ability to Learn

Exercise is good for our body and our brain and science is helping back up what we intuitively know is true. Dr. John Ratey, author and Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, studies the connection between the brain and fitness, and says  physical activity in school readies the brain for learning .

Dr. Ratey says physical activity in school found on a playground:

  • Improves attention, decreases stress and anxiety, and prepares students to learn. It also improves motivation—helping kids try things they might not normally be inclined to try.
  • Primes the brain cells to change when new information is introduced.
  • Promotes the growth of new brain cells so the brain can absorb and retain new information.

Physical movement stimulates brain activity by improving blood flow to the brain. For an active child, this brings water, oxygen and glucose to the brain at a higher rate than it does to the brain of the sedentary child. When a brain receives the necessary nutrients, the child has a better ability to learn, respond and retain information.

Recess Holds the Key

Kids need physical activity to be healthy, strong and smart, and they can stay active if schools provide time for outdoor play. Getting kids active is important but how they are active matters as well. A research study from Pellegrini and Holmes referenced in the article, The cognitive benefits of play: Effects on the learning brain , says that physical education classes don't deliver the same benefits as recess. Researchers suspect that's because PE classes are too structured and rely too much on adult-imposed rules. To reap all the benefits of play, physical activity must be truly playful and an unstructured break in which kids are free to play without direction from adults.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Playground

Introduction.

A playground is a place designed for children to play freely. It is a vital area for kids to express their creativity, explore, and enjoy their time.

Features of a Playground

Playgrounds often have various equipment like swings, slides, seesaws, and climbing frames. They are usually made from safe and durable materials to ensure children’s safety.

Importance of a Playground

Playgrounds are important for children’s physical health and social development. They help kids to stay active, make friends, and learn important life skills like teamwork and problem-solving.

In conclusion, playgrounds are essential spaces for children’s growth and development. They provide a fun and safe environment for kids to play and learn.

250 Words Essay on Playground

The concept of playgrounds, the importance of playgrounds.

Playgrounds provide a unique learning environment. They foster creativity and imagination, as children invent games, create rules, and build imaginary worlds. They also promote physical health, as the activities encourage movement, coordination, and agility. Playgrounds serve as a backdrop for children to develop resilience, learning to navigate physical challenges, overcome fears, and manage risks.

The Social Aspect of Playgrounds

Playgrounds are social arenas where children learn to interact with peers, understand group dynamics, and develop empathy. They learn to negotiate, collaborate, and resolve conflicts, skills essential for their future lives. Playgrounds also foster a sense of community, as they are often the focal point of neighborhoods and schools.

Playgrounds in the Digital Age

With the advent of technology, the concept of playgrounds is evolving. Digital playgrounds, such as online gaming platforms, provide similar benefits of social interaction and cognitive development. However, they lack the physicality and direct human interaction of traditional playgrounds. As society progresses, it’s crucial to strike a balance between these two forms to ensure holistic development in children.

In conclusion, playgrounds, both physical and digital, are more than just spaces for play. They are vital in shaping a child’s development and preparing them for adult life.

500 Words Essay on Playground

The conceptual playground: more than just a physical space.

Playgrounds are more than just the physical spaces where children swing, slide, and climb. They are the crucibles of social interaction, learning, and personal growth. Yet, the concept extends beyond the tangible wooden structures and rubber mats, into the realm of the abstract.

The Physical Playground: A Space for Interaction and Growth

The physical playground also serves as a social hub. It’s a place where children learn to interact with their peers, negotiate roles during play, resolve conflicts, and understand the principles of cooperation and competition. They learn to respect the rights of others, wait for their turns, and share the available resources.

The Abstract Playground: A Metaphor for Life

However, the concept of a playground transcends the physical realm. It can be viewed as a metaphor for life, where individuals have to navigate through various challenges and obstacles. Just like a playground, life requires balance, coordination, and the ability to overcome difficulties.

The Digital Playground: The New Age of Play

With the advent of technology, the concept of playgrounds has evolved into digital spaces. Video games, virtual reality, and online platforms have become the new age playgrounds. These digital playgrounds offer a unique blend of entertainment, learning, and social interaction. They allow individuals to explore different worlds, assume various roles, and interact with people from around the globe.

However, it’s crucial to balance the time spent in digital playgrounds with physical play to ensure overall development. The physical playground offers benefits like improved motor skills, physical fitness, and direct social interaction that digital playgrounds may lack.

Conclusion: The Evolving Concept of Playgrounds

My School is the second-largest school in the entire city. Furthermore, it is among the most renowned institutions of the state. It has two very large fields. We call it the front and the backfield. On the front, we play sports like football and hockey because of its’ soft ground. However, the back is to play cricket . This is because it has a pitch on it and the ground was hard.

Moreover, my school also has a basketball court where students practice almost every day. My favorite is the swimming pool which is quite big. So I never miss any swimming periods whenever I have any. Further my school has two halls. One is the new gymnasium and the other is the old one. The students play sports badminton and table tennis in it. Also if we have any literary function, it always takes place in the new gymnasium.

My School Events

Every year in October we have a Literary and Cultural Festival. In this, students from different schools come to participate. Furthermore, it was a three-day function. This first day is of Western music , in this, the students sing western songs. Various bands from different schools participate in this. The second day is of Hindi music, in which we get to listen to some of the most beautiful voices.

The third day is the choreography. This is the best day of all three. Some, my friends, are really great dancers, so they always perform on this day. Moreover, we get to see some of the best dance acts on the day. These are the most memorable and enjoyable days of the entire school year.

Furthermore, at the end of every year, we have a P.T. Display. In this, the students from every batch have to perform an act. To perform this act our teachers start teaching us one month before the event. We all enjoy a lot during these days as we didn’t have to study for the first three periods. Moreover, on the day of the event, various competitions also take place. I always take part in an inter-house relay because I am good at it.

At last, before the farewell, there is a concert held. In this, we perform for our senior and the retired staff to wish them goodbye. It is a mixed concert in which we could perform any act. Whether it be singing, dancing or drama , everything is welcomed in this.

I have always admired my seniors because some of them had great achievements during their School life . And staying with them for so many years has enlisted an attachment. Furthermore, I have seen them spending their last days in college. And it was truly heartbreaking on wishing them goodbye.

Should Teachers Carry Guns? The Debate, Explained

This August 2016 photo shows a sign outside a school in Claude, Texas, which Claude ISD posts outside their schools.

  • Share article

The idea of arming teachers—or loosening state restrictions to allow concealed-carry permit holders to bring guns into schools—is often circulated after school attacks. It gained attention after the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in 2012 and was revived in the wake of the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla.

Recently, the sheriff leading a Florida commission investigating the Parkland massacre said he believed trained, volunteer teachers should have access to guns as a last line of defense in a school shooting.

And earlier this fall, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos made it clear that she believes districts have the flexibility to use federal funds to arm teachers.

But putting guns in the hands of school staff is often met with resistance from educators, who say they don’t want the responsibility of carrying and securing a firearm on top of their already demanding jobs. Many teachers believe that arming themselves—and their peers—would make schools less safe.

Here’s what you need to know about the divisive issue:

Who Supports the Idea?

President Trump, for one. At a speech just after the Parkland shooting, he argued that armed teachers with training and experience who “love their students” might be better able to protect them in an active shooting scenario than an armed police officer.

“A teacher would have shot the hell out of him before he knew what happened,” Trump said, referring to the former student who is accused of the slayings.

DeVos herself is not opposed to arming educators. At her Senate confirmation hearing in 2017, she suggested teachers may need guns to ward off “potential” grizzly bears. As the leader of a federal school safety commission, she’s also been hearing from some supporters of the idea .

Not surprisingly, gun-rights advocates have long pushed for laws that allow educators to carry weapons .

And education officials in Texas, where some educators are already packing heat at school , are in favor of it. They were the ones who asked DeVos and her staff if certain federal funds could be used by school districts to pay for firearms and firearms training for school-based staff.

There Are Already Teachers Carrying Guns at School

Many schools are “gun-free zones,” but the federal Gun-Free School Zones Act allows states to authorize certain individuals to carry firearms on school grounds.

In addition to Texas, the states of Utah, Wyoming, and South Dakota allow staff members—with certain caveats—to carry guns on school grounds.

According to Everytown for Gun Safety—a gun-control advocacy group—15 states allow concealed carry of some sort in schools, and this year two dozen states considered similar policies:

Adopting a Policy for Arming Teachers Could Be a Minefield

Among the questions schools who want to arm staff members have to answer:

  • who—exactly—is authorized to carry a firearm,
  • where should guns be stored, and
  • should armed employees get some sort of bonus .

And that’s only the beginning .

There’s also the thorny question of liability: Who would be responsible if something went wrong? Many things could go wrong, experts say—a student could find or steal a teacher’s firearm, the weapon could accidentally discharge, or a teacher could shoot an innocent bystander during an active-shooter situation.

Arming staff could get expensive. A high-quality, name-brand, semi-automatic pistol or other type of handgun could run anywhere from $500 to $1,200. And the idea of diverting already stretched resources to these and other costs such as firearms training could be a very tough sell. (Perhaps that’s why Texas is asking if its districts can tap into those federal dollars.)

Who Opposes the Idea?

All the major teacher, principal, school employee, and school security organizations oppose guns in schools, except when carried by a police or security officer.

And so do most teachers and Americans.

A 2015 CBS News/New York Times poll found that 57 percent of all respondents opposed allowing teachers and staff to carry guns in schools, though the idea was more popular among Republicans.

Among educators, the idea is even less popular, according to recent surveys :

  • Teach Plus, a national advocacy group for teacher leadership, polled 1,233 teachers and found nearly 80 percent said they strongly oppose arming teachers in school.
  • The National Education Association surveyed 1,000 of its members and 82 percent of respondents said they would not carry a gun to school even if they had firearms training and were allowed to do so.
  • And a Gallup poll found less than 30 percent of teachers think that arming teachers would be very or somewhat effective in limiting the number of victims in a school shooting.

Education Week has spoken to many educators who think carrying a concealed weapon is a bad idea , including school shooting survivors themselves.

Second grade teacher Abbey Clements was hunkered down with her students at Sandy Hook Elementary School as the country’s deadliest K-12 school shooting was taking place. “We’re not trained sharp shooters, we’re not trained first responders,” Clements said . “We are caregivers. ... I’m sure every educator out there would say that we want school safety, but arming teachers is not the answer.”

“I think we should have more security at school, but I don’t want our school to feel like a prison,” said Adeena Teres , a science teacher at Marjory Stoneman Douglas and the owner of a concealed-carry permit.

Jim Moffatt, a retired principal who was shot by a student at Fergus High School in Lewistown, Mont., in 1986, actively campaigns against legislative efforts to arm teachers:

essay on school ground

While their numbers may be smaller than those who oppose carrying guns, there are teachers, principals, and superintendents who favor it.

Brian Teucke, an 8th grade civics and economics teacher in Hampton Roads, Va., said having a military background makes him “somewhat of an aberration” among his colleagues. He has a concealed-carry permit and would be willing to carry a gun to school . His students, he said, have told him they would appreciate that extra level of security.

“I do think it’s reasonable for someone like me, but if you look at the landscape of American educators at large, I don’t think it’s realistic,” he said. “I don’t represent the majority of teachers.”

Jeffrey Woofter, a former sheriff and the superintendent of West Virginia’s Barbour County school district, does not think that all school personnel should be armed either. But he believes that trained staff should be allowed to carry concealed weapons or have access to concealed weapons on campus.

“Schools are just sitting ducks because people know that you are not permitted to carry in schools, and that just makes them vulnerable,” Woofter said .

Thank you very much for your input, Amelia!

this info is very helpful and all but right now at school (i am in middle school) i have to write an expisitory essay on any topic i am really having trouble finding a topic but it has to be something u can argue like for example: football: people think it is a dangerous sport but the rules have changed more saftey… yeah stuff like that something u can argue ur opinion and so far i have nothing i was really hoping this would help but no but thx anyways i am gonna go to another website but in the future this could really help thx!!!!

But it makes your teacher happy to know what your input is for example what your input is about bullying and drugs.

Thank you so much for this. I need to give my 8th-grader, reluctant writer, some options for what he writes as practice on spring break. This is a great list. I added one about describing the appeal of the YouTube videos he watches, and another about the cause-and-effect of DOnald Trump’s candidacy, since my son is very interested in Trump.

Thank you this helped a lot when I didn’t know what to write for my essay.

I really like this website because i like writing essays for practice and these are a little difficult but It is good for it to be a little diffcult because it is more challenging.

These are great! I will be using these suggestions with my 6th graders! I love expository writing!!!! 🙂
