English Writing Skills- Descriptive Writing for Class 9 English Language and Literature 

Descriptive Writing for Class 9 is a scoring topic of writing skills which is in the syllabus of class 9 English Language and Literature. Students can score full marks with ease because the format is very simple. You need to know all important details of writing a factual description of a person or object. What is Descriptive writing?

Descriptive paragraph writing as the name suggests, involves describing something. Students will be required to describe a person or event or situation based on visual or verbal cues given in the question.

Weightage and marking scheme for class 9 English (Language and Literature)

Students must keep the following points in mind-

A perfect descriptive paragraph will be awarded 5 marks. 

The student will be given two questions out of which the student has to attempt one. 

The student will be judged on the basis of content, accuracy, organisation and grammar. 

The word limit of a descriptive paragraph is 100-120 words.

Introduction (Introduce your topic in an interesting way so that the reader will become interested in reading the rest of your paragraph.)

Body (Dwell on the topic more by giving elaborate details.)

Conclusion (give an overall statement which ends your writing piece perfectly. Do not b abrupt in the ending.)

Descriptive writing requires beautiful vocabulary and the author’s ability to create an image of the person, place, object or event described in the reader’s mind. You can use the given tips when describing – 

• First impression
• Appearance (height, build, facial features, hair)
• Personality (kind, charming) Keep it rather positive.
• Mannerisms (greets people enthusiastically, loves to help others)
• Hobbies (gardening, cooking, singing, painting)
• Career (line of work, attitude towards their job i.e. whether they love their job)
• Where and when the writer was introduced to the person
• Name of event
• Nature and aim of event
• Place of event
• Time and duration of event
• Writer’s and other people’s experience
• Aftermath (what happened after the event ended)
• People involved

The following are some useful tips for descriptive writing:

• Vocabulary (Wide vocabulary can impress the reader.)
• Imagery (The descriptive paragraph should paint vivid images of the person, event or situation so described.)
• Literary devices (Use of literary devices like simile, alliteration, imagery can make the writing sound more creative and beautiful.)
• Do not exceed the word limit.
• Make sure to avoid grammatical errors and maintain accuracy.

• You bought a bag for your brother as a gift on Raksha Bandhan. Describe it.
• You got a book as a birthday gift. Describe it and how you felt after reading it.
• Describe your loving grandparents and how they care fpr you.
• Describe your best friend.
• The school took all students to a visit to the butterfly park in your city. Describe the place and what all you saw there.
• Your school organised a grand celebration on the occasion of Teacher’s day. Describe it.

Q1. Describe your mother in 100-120 words.

Ans. My mother’s name is Sohini Chugh. She is 46 years old. She is a plump, fair-complexioned woman with hazel eyes and blonde hair colour. I inherited my eye colour from her. Her height is 160 cm and weight is 84 kgs. She is kind, hard-working, strict and possesses a great sense of humour. She enjoys cooking, teaching and reading. Her favourite genres are comedy and detective novels. She is a teacher who teaches the subject mathematics to classes 6th to 8th at Sunshine High School, where I study as well. The students find her to be a strict teacher. My mother likes helping her students and guiding them, but does not tolerate disorderliness and bad mannerisms. 

Q2. You attended the Annual Function held at your sister’s school. Describe the event in 100-120 words.

Ans. On 16th December, I attended the Annual Function held at my sister’s school. The Annual Function was biblical-themed. Classes 6th to 11th were involved in the event. I attended the event with my mother and father. The event took place in the school auditorium at 4 p.m. The event started with a speech from the Principal and the choir’s performance. Then came the various plays, dance performances and musicals. None of us had read the bible before, but the narration was crystal clear, which enabled us to understand most of the context behind the plays and musicals. My sister acted as a saint. The function was fun and we learnt a lot about the Bible. 

Q3. You were giving an exam when the invigilator caught two of your classmates cheating. Describe the situation in 100-120 words.

Ans. On September 14th, I had my Physics exam, the subject the majority of us are scared of. Nevertheless, my classmates and I sat down to give our best. Cheating is performed expertly by my classmates. However, this time the invigilator was a harsh and sharp teacher. Everyone knew not to cheat, but of course two students were willing to take the risk. They were caught. Their papers were seized and were ordered to get up and move to the Principal’s room for further action. Upon hearing this, one of them got a panic attack. The invigilator called another invigilator, then the class teacher. Soon, it was chaos. Everyone was distracted by the situation.

Q4. Describe your best friend in 100-120 words.

Ans. My best friend’s name is Meena Goel. She is the same age as me. She has been studying in the same school, class and section as me for five years. We are in 9th class now. She is 5 foot 4 inches tall and weighs about 55 kg. She is skinny and has a fair complexion. Her hair is wavy and brown in colour. She has dark brown eyes. She has a mischievous smile. She talks a lot and is frequently scolded for the same. However, despite that, she is good at keeping secrets. She is an extrovert. She likes indulging in parties and travelling. She loves watching Hollywood movies. I am grateful to have her as my best friend.

Descriptive Essays

A Descriptive Essay provides a detailed description of a specific subject. The purpose of such an essay is to evoke an image in our minds by appealing to our senses. As a result, a descriptive essay engages at least one of our five senses (touch, smell, taste, hearing, and sight).

One should have a clear picture of the subject after reading a descriptive essay, whether it’s a historical episode, a geographical location, or a work of art.

Narrative Essays

A Narrative Essay, like a descriptive essay, it asks you to share an experience rather than advance an argument or provide evidence to support an opinion. This experience can be personal and real from your own life (for example, telling the story of your first big achievement), or it can be imagined (for example, telling the story of how you would face a situation).

A narrative essay allows writers to share their personal experiences. It is similar to a short story; the only difference is that it has a proper structure. A good narrative essay also progresses to a meaningful conclusion that goes beyond a list of events and details.

Argumentative Essays

An Argumentative Essay is a type of writing that uses facts and logic to persuade the reader of a particular point of view. Even though many types of essays try to get the reader to agree with a certain point of view, argumentative essays use a lot of hard evidence to show that their argument is the best.

The goal of argumentative essays, like persuasive essays and other types of essays, is to persuade the reader of a particular point of view. The method of persuasion is what distinguishes an argumentative essay. An argumentative essay uses factual evidence and unarguable logic to demonstrate that its thesis is correct.

The idea is that an argumentative essay disproves or invalidates opposing theories to prove that its thesis is correct. As a result, argumentative essays discuss other opposing points of view as well as the writer’s own thesis. It’s difficult to declare one viewpoint “true” while ignoring all others.

Story Writing is a type of fictional writing that is written in a more straightforward manner and has its own natural flow. Character (typically a Protagonist and Antagonist), setting, plot, conflict, and theme are the five elements of story writing. Through story writing, you share the experience of characters in a physical setting with a plot that makes it story-worthy, a conflict that causes a riff or character relationship core, and finally, the theme of the story as in what the story wants to share. The story has to be original and must not be an imitation of any novel or movie.

Picture Compositions

Picture Composition, in general, fosters perception expertise in students and improves their capacity to dissect and expound on a given image. Students get ideas by observing the image, and they express their ideas through all-around shaped sentences.

A picture essay (or composition) is usually divided into three parts in which a student is asked to describe the picture, make a story out of it, or express and elaborate on the thoughts and feelings implied by the picture. A picture can be a photograph, a scene from an action movie, a quote written over a picture or a sketch of a famous person. The things shown in the picture should not be itemized.

Your class 9 English exam may include a task which requires you to write a descriptive paragraph on an event. Since you are describing something that you witnessed or experienced yourself, the language can be informal and you can use the first person pronoun I.

Describe an Event

Yesterday you were traveling on a KSRTC bus. Unfortunately, your wallet was left at home. The conductor gave you a free ticket. You are moved by his gesture. Describe the event in 100-150 words.

Yesterday I boarded a KSRTC bus from Shornur. I was traveling to Thrissur to attend a workshop on soft skills. I was running late and in a hurry to reach the bus stop. Unfortunately, I forgot to take my wallet and I hadn’t realized it until after I boarded the bus. By the time, the bus conductor approached me for the bus fare, we had already reached Vadakkanchery. I searched for my wallet in my pocket, and to my shock, I realized that I had left it at home. I didn’t know what I was supposed to do. I thought the conductor would shout at me for not having money to pay for the ticket. He didn’t do that. Instead, he kindly asked me if I had any money on me. I replied that I had left my wallet at home and the good old man issued me a free ticket. I was really moved by that gesture. I offered to pay him the fare the next day but he declined that. He said that he had a son my age and he wanted people to treat him kindly when they found him in similar situations. I thanked the man profusely and got off at Thrissur with a heart full of gratitude. Kind people are everywhere and we can add to their number by being kind to anyone and everyone we meet.

Introduction: One of the most difficult personal goal in school was to learn cycling.

• New situations always made me a bit nervous and my first cycling lesson was no exception.
• One Sunday morning I decided to learn cycling with my father’s help.
• Initially I had great difficulty in coordinating the movements.
• The next day after the first round I found him standing in front of me.
• I had indeed mastered the skill of cycling and later won the inter school championship trophy.

Conclusion: Learning to cycle was not easy for me. It however made me more confident and bold.

Learning something new was a very scary experience. One of the most difficult things, I have ever had to do in school was to learn cycling. I was mortally afraid of falling and injuring myself. I watched my friends with disdain, as they cycled to school, while I trudged along with my school bag on my shoulder. Occasionally a friend would give me a lift on his bicycle, which would make me feel even more lowly and awkward. One day I finally decided to learn this important skill and requested my father to help me.

New situations always made me a bit nervous and my first cycling lesson was no ; exception. Early Sunday morning when everyone was fast asleep, I crept out of bed, put on my full sleeves shirt and trousers, to protect me from injury. As I wheeled out my brother’s bicycle on to the driveway, my father called out to me. He was glossing over the newspaper, which he put aside as he came towards me. We steadily made our way to the park adjacent to our house.

Reaching the park, he made me sit on the cycle holding the seat from behind. My legs barely touched the lower pedal. A stream of instructions followed, like “Hold the handle straight”, “Look straight ahead”, “Don’t stop peddling, etc”. He gave an initial push to the cycle from behind. I found these coordinated instructions quite difficult to follow, and soon I was down on my knees, with the cycle over me.

However the strong grip of my father softened the fall and I escaped with minor bruises. But my father was patient. He encouraged me saying “Good, keep it up Sumit”. This boosted my confidence. I was up on my feet. Holding the handle of the cycle firmly, I pushed the pedal down with my legs, at the same time trying to retain my upright position. The very presence of my father boosted my confidence no end. In about an hour’s time, I learnt to coordinate the movements, as my father ran behind holding the seat of the cycle.

The next day we repeated the entire exercise, completing one round of the park. During the second round I felt more free and easy, as I feverishly pushed the pedals. To my surprise I found my father standing right in front of me smiling and waving. He 1 had intentionally let go of my seat after the first round. I had indeed mastered the skill of cycling. It was a wonderful free feeling – like flying.

From that day onwards, it became my hobby and later fetched me the inter school championship trophy. Learning to cycle was not easy for me. However my persistence in achieving this personal goal finally paid off. Now whenever I am faced with a new challenge, I am not nervous. This is because I know that as 1 practice more, my skills would get better. This has made me more confident and bold. It is indeed a wonderful feeling when you achieve a goal, you have set for yourself.

Conclusion: A memorable occasion

The school fete is looked forward to by most of us. It provides entertainment and also great learning which is useful later in life. This year my school organised a fete on Saturday, the 10th of October. Feverish preparation began a fortnight before the event. Each class was asked to set up a stall of their choice. We collected contributions from our classmates and sent out invitations to parents, requesting them to join the festivity with their friends and relatives.

The day turned out to be cloudy but by midday the Sun peeped through the clouds, which hung heavy in the sky. They threatened to play spoilsport, but thankfully a westerly breeze them steadily blew away, bringing much cheer to our dampened spirits.

Making my way to the big playfield, excited shouts of glee from my friends greeted me. Numerous colourful stalls adorned the school ground. In the centre an orchestra was belting out the latest musical hit, which added gaiety and festivity to the occasion. A huge giant wheel in one comer of the field had small children shouting with delight as the wheel went up and down.

I took my position on the counter of our stall selling eatables like snacks and chowmein. It was great fun serving the customers most of whom were my friends. We seemed to have matured overnight, working like true businessmen, accounting for cash and stocks. The next stall was selling cakes and chocolates and they were also doing brisk business. The occasional cackle of the loud speaker broke the revelry to make an announcement.

A friendly tap on my shoulder made me turn around “Hi Siddhant,’ said Rohit as he caught my hand and escorted me to his stall selling raffle tickets and persuaded me to buy one. I reluctantly parted with a ten rupee note in exchange for the ticket, which I carelessly shove in my pocket. Taking a break from my stall, I went around the other stalls, eating chocolates and ice cream, till I had run out of money.

As the sun set we wound up the stall which was almost depleted. Handing over the collection to my class teacher, I was about to depart, when I heard the number of the lucky winner being announced. I pulled out the crumbled ticket from my pocket – Lo and behold! I had struck the jackpot. In a trance I walked up to the podium, to collect the prize.

Thereafter all boundaries began to crumble, as teachers and students danced to the music of the orchestra. I too joined in the fun and merrymaking. It was exciting and enjoyable to practically learn lesson of team work and coordination.

Later I trudged home with the prize, which shall always remind me of the wonderful time I had in the school fete.

(a)  Excretion  — Excretion is the passing out of substances that have no further use in the body or are harmful.

(b)  Kidney  — The kidneys are a pair of organs that are found on either side of the spine, just below the rib cage in the back. The Kidneys are powerful chemical factories that perform the following function of removing waste products from the body, filter waste materials out of the blood and pass them out of the body as urine. It also regulates blood pressure and the levels of water, salts and minerals in the body.

(c)  Micturition  — Urine is expelled from the urinary bladder through the urethra by relaxation of the sphincter muscles located at the opening of the urinary bladder into the urethra under impulse from the nervous system. This process is called micturition.

(d)  Osmoregulation  — The regulation of osmotic pressure of the blood by regulating its composition (water and electrolyte) is called osmoregulation.

(a) Excretion is a necessary process of our body as it is necessary to eliminate certain waste and toxic products, such as carbon dioxide, urea etc. When these toxic materials are not removed from the body, they get mixed with blood and can cause poisoning that slows down critical chemical reactions and damage the cells of the body. Hence it is necessary to remove such poisonous waste materials from our body.

(b) The Bowman’s capsule and the proximal convoluted part of all the nephrons lie in the cortex of kidneys giving it a ‘dotted’ appearance.

(c) During summer when the surrounding temperature is high, we lose a considerable part of water through perspiration (i.e., in the form of sweat, direct evaporation, etc.). This means that the kidneys have to reabsorb more water from the urine. Due to this reason, we urinate fewer times in summer than in winter and the urine passed is generally thicker.

(d) Henle’s loops and collecting ducts lie in the medulla of kidneys giving it a ‘striped’ appearance.
