Presentation Secondary School, Wexford

Mission Statement

Presentation, Wexford, is a Catholic Secondary School for girls only, guided by the ideals of Nano Nagle, foundress of the Presentation Congregation.

“Inspired by the vision of Nano Nagle, our school is committed to the pursuit of excellence in a caring, respectful and inclusive community.”

School History

The Presentation Congregation was founded in Cork in 1775 by Nano Nagle, a daughter of one of the oldest families in the country. The aim was to help downtrodden citizens by the only means in her power – to provide them with schools and education. The story of Presentation, Wexford, started in October 1818, when two sisters came from the already established convent in Kilkenny.

They started by opening a Primary school. About 1940 a second-level school was established and in the following years the school became a fully recognized Secondary school.

The Presentation order was established in Wexford town in October 1818, being the first religious order to come to the town after the Penal Laws. In the 1820s, the Presentation Sisters established a school, which has, over time, developed into the Presentation Secondary School. We will mark 200 years of providing education to the town of Wexford in 2018.

The school currently operates under the trusteeship of C. E. I. S. T. (Catholic Education an Irish Schools Trust). As such, it supports the Religious and Educational Philosophy of its Founder, Nano Nagle. Religious Education takes a central place in the life and curriculum of the school. We are an all-girl, voluntary secondary school and are situated in a primarily residential area of Wexford town.

Presentation School Wexford aims, with the resources available, to provide the best possible environment in which to facilitate the cultural, educational, moral, physical, religious, social, linguistic and spiritual values and traditions of all students.

Presentation Secondary School, Wexford provides for a wide range of artistic, cultural, social and sporting activities to develop the talents of all students and to provide them with the confidence to be involved in various activities in later life. The school also places great emphasis on the development of competitive games for all its students.

Working together as a school community, the Board of Management, parents, staff and students aim to provide an environment that will allow each student to develop intellectually, physically, morally, socially and spiritually so that she will be able to fulfil her role in society.

The current student cohort of 803 reflects a wide variety of socio-economic backgrounds and includes students from the locality and a considerably large rural hinterland. There is a strong culture of C. P. D. for the teaching staff within the school. The school offers the Junior Certificate, an optional and well-established Transition Year (T. Y.) programme, the established Leaving Certificate and L.C.V.P. We have approximately 26 schools in our catchment area.

Top 15 Best International Schools in Moscow, Russia

Moscow International Schools

There are over 20 international schools in Moscow   and the surrounding area, with 11  British schools , 3  IB schools in Moscow  and 2  American schools .  Most are English speaking and some are bi and multi-lingual. Read on to find out what the areas of Moscow are like and how they relate to some of the best Moscow international schools.

Life in Moscow

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city in Europe by area.  It is also one of the most populous cities in the world with an estimated current population of more than 15 million within the city limits and 25 million within its metropolitan area. According to the 2019 Forbes List, Moscow is home to more billionaires than anywhere else in the world apart from New York and Hong Kong.  Moscow has a rich cultural history and is well known for its unique and beautiful architecture, art, classical music and ballet.  The city is easy to get around on foot or by public transport, although the metro gets very crowded during rush hour.  The roads are very busy with frequent traffic jams.  In recent years Moscow has become a real culinary capital with plenty of excellent restaurants coffee shops.  It is a common misconception that Russians are unfriendly.  In Russian culture it is unusual to smile at strangers.  Most Russians are warm, sincere and honest and will give you a genuine smile once they get to know you.

Central Moscow

The prestigious district of Arbat is centrally located in the western part of the city and home to a number of embassies.  It is a popular area rich in beautiful architecture and luxurious apartments.

The central, convenient and lively Tverskaya Street in the north westerly part of the city leads directly to Red Square and the Kremlin.  There are, however, some quieter side streets, like Kamergersky Lane, with beautiful housing and an abundance of restaurants and cafés.

Patriarshiye Prudy

To the southern side of Tverskaya Street is the popular family area of Patriarshiye Prudy (Patriarch’s Ponds).  This is a calm and quiet neighbourhood around a beautiful city park.

Basmanny District

To the east of the city centre is the Basmanny District, a clean, green neighbourhood considered to be a calm oasis in the heart of the city.  This area is home to Chistye prudy (Clean Ponds), a popular park with paddle boats to rent in the Summer or ice skates in the Winter.

Tretyakov Gallery

Situated in the southern part of the city, the Tretyakov Gallery area is lively with plenty of upmarket bars and coffee shops.  There are some quieter neighbourhoods off the main streets of Pyatnitskaya and Ordynka.

Outside the Garden Ring

Fruzenskaya area.

To the south west of the city, just outside the Garden Ring, is the Fruzenskaya embankment.  This area is very leafy and green overlooking the Moscow River and Gorky Park.  This area is popular with families but apartments are often quite small and expensive.

Leningradsky Prospekt

Leningradsky Prospekt is a busy avenue to the north west of the city that connects with the top of Tverskaya Street at its southern end.  This quirky, bohemian area, famous for its Artist’s Village (Sokol area), is leafy and green with some remaining dachas (Russian country cottages).

Outer areas of Moscow

Botanical garden district.

Around 10 km to the north of the centre is the green district of Moscow’s Botanical Gardens, one of the largest in Europe, is a great place which boasts a valuable collection of rare plants while providing visitors with the opportunity to plunge into the world of nature without having to leave the city. It is also home to one of the most visited and favorite places of rest and entertainment for guests and residents of the capital - VDNHa -  the Park, Exhibition and Cultural Complex .

Pokrovsky Hills

Around 15 km to the north west of the city centre is Pokrovsky Hills, an exclusive gated, residential community with family housing situated in a hilly, wooded area adjacent to the   several international schools .

Another 5 km further to the north west of the city centre is Rosinka.  This luxurious, gated international community of individual family homes is spread over 134 acres with facilities including a private lake with its own beach, a woodland nature reserve, playgrounds and a leisure centre with sports facilities, conference facilities and a restaurant.

Serebryany Bor

Just under 20 km to the west of the city is the ecological forest park island of Serebryany Bor.  In addition to the protected ancient woodland this area has clean beaches, a watersports complex, marinas and stables. This area also has spacious, family housing .

The seed of Scoil Mhuire was born out of the Presentation Convent. It was the Presentation Sisters and dedicated staff that nurtured the school throughout the years. The school is now a bedrock of Clane community. Reflecting on the school’s history and unique spirit I realise how honoured and privileged I am to be Principal.

The school's curriculum is very much a reflection of its founders. Today in Scoil Mhuire we cater for everybody. The school offers a comprehensive curriculum.

Evidence of the community identification is the extraordinarily successful Adult Education programme, which offers lifelong learning opportunities to the people in Clane and the surrounding areas.

The success of the school is the partnership and respect that exists between staff, students and parents. It is the extraordinary dedication of the teachers, secretarial and caretaking staff that gives Scoil Mhuire its unique spirit. This culture of dedication is passed on to any new member of staff in the school.

Scoil Mhuire is a hive of activity outside of the very busy curriculum. An extensive range of extra curricular activities is provided for the students. Sports, drama, debating, music, young scientist, foreign travel and fundraising for charity are just some of the activities that help students develop a rounded education. Scoil Mhuire has had many successes outside the classroom.

Today the school needs to be an ever-evolving organisation meeting the needs of a multicultural society. Schools of the past were concerned with the three Rs of reading, writing, and arithmetic. These now are augmented with the three Ts of thinking, teamwork and technology and mixed with the three Cs of care, courtesy and consideration. The challenges today are greater than they have ever been and Scoil Mhuire, because of its history and traditions, is well established to meet these challenges.

Kevin Martin, Principal.

  • Scoil Mhuire is a Community School consisting of Staff, Students, Parents and Management.
  • As a centre for the formation of youth its aim is to strive for a more Christian and just society.
  • To provide a warm and caring environment where students are taught to respect the dignity of each person and to develop their own sense of worth and self-esteem.
  • It seeks to provide a disciplined atmosphere in which students can work and develop their talents to the best of their abilities.
  • All are expected to strive for excellence in all their pursuits whether academic or non academic.
  • Scoil Mhuire works within the curriculum of the Department of Education and provides extra curricular activities aiming at the growth of the whole person.
  • Students are encouraged to develop their academic, intuitive and creative gifts to enable them to live their lives to the full and contribute in a positive way to the society of which they are a part.
  • The school continually re-examines its goals and objectives and responds in a creative way to the demands of changing times.

Secondary education was introduced to Clane in 1963 when the Presentation sisters established Scoil Mhuire in the convent building beside the church in the village’s main street, to fulfil the educational needs of girls in the Clane area. The first boys were admitted in 1967 and as the school enrolment increased further buildings in the village were utilised and land along the Prosperous Road was used to house prefabs.

After much campaigning and fundraising a brand new building was opened in 1983. This involved changing from a conventional type secondary school to a community school administered by a Board of Management, thus formally bringing into existence Scoil Mhuire Community School. Since 1983 much has changed with the opening of a new extension and gym in September 2001.

Throughout the school’s existence their have been many noteworthy days. In 1971 Peter Shortt achieved the highest honour available to science students in Ireland when he won the “Young Scientist of the Year” award. Two former pupils of the school, Willie and Ted Ryan, represented Ireland at the Moscow Olympics in 1980. In 1988 the school senior football team became the fi st Kildare team to win an All-Ireland Colleges title. The Kildare team that contested the All-Ireland final ten years later, in 1998, were backboned by members of that team. In 2010, the Senior footballers reached the All-Ireland Final again, losing narrowly after a great campaign that brought a Leinster title to the school.

Many prominent people attended the school including the Hall of Fame inductees who grace the walls of the Assembly Area. Dr. Elizabeth Higgins who graduated from Scoil Mhuire in 1978, has worked throughout the developing world, particularly in the area of education. She is Head of Development Cooperation Ireland. Dr. Frank Mulligan was a member of the class of 1974 and went onto study physics before becoming Vice President of NUI Maynooth between 1998 and 2006. Eoghan Corry is a respected author and journalist who has written widely about the GAA. He graduated from Scoil Mhuire in 1978.

Other graduates have included drummer Graham Hopkins and bassist Joe Doyle, Cheltenham winning jockies Kieran Kelly (RIP) and Mark Walsh, and famous television journalist Donal Mac Intyre.

With over 1200 students and more than 80 staff and with an adult education enrolment that runs into thousands, Scoil Mhuire continues to meet the educational needs and play a key role in the life of the community of Clane and the surrounding areas.

Scoil Mhuire Crest

The torch effect symbolises light, enlightenment, building up which is the aspiration of education. In the light stand a boy and girl enfolded by two hands indicating the support and care sought to be provided for them in the school. Behind the students one can see the shape of a book, which symbolises the learning, and study, which the school encourages and provides

Scoil Mhuire is governed by a Board of Management made up of democratically elected members. The Board has representatives from the Trustees, Teachers and Parents. Trustees Joint trusteeship is vested in the Department of Education and Science, Kildare Wicklow ETB. and the Presentation Sisters Northern Province. Board Members The Board has ten members and is made up as follows: Order Nominees 3 Kildare Wicklow ETB 3 Parent Nominees 2 Staff Nominees 2

Student Support System

Presentation School Wexford offers every member of the school community a caring environment in which to grow and be affirmed. Every pupil and member of staff have a duty of care to ensure that such an environment exists and is nurtured. This is the essence of a caring school community and is sustained by the Pastoral Care System, to include Year Heads Class Tutors and the Student Sup-port Team. Presentation Secondary School Wexford inspired by the core values of CEIST, aims with the resources available, aims to provide the best possible environment in which to facilitate the cultural, educational, moral, physical, religious, social, linguistic and spiritual values and traditions of all students. We show special concern for the disadvantaged and we make every effort to ensure that the uniqueness and dignity of each person is respected, and responded to, especially through the pastoral care system in the school. We realise too, that we must cater for the changing needs of today’s world and towards that end, we frequently review our various programmes. Being keenly aware of the ever-increasing effect of outside influences on the lives of our students, we are even more concerned to maintain Christian values and practices. Working together as a school community, the Board of Management, parents, staff and students aim to provide an environment that will allow each student to develop intellectually, physically, morally, socially and spiritually so that she will be able to fulfil her role in society. CEIST values are reflected in the quality of relationships between all the school partners, and in every interaction between the school, parents, outside agencies and communities. (see Core Values of CEIST)

Class Groups Tutors Classes

In first year we try to ensure that students have as much stability as possible. As in Primary School, students will have a ‘base class group’ with whom they may have up to 75% of their classes. This provides an ideal opportunity for them to get to know each other. In first year students are assigned to mixed ability classes on the basis of their subject choices.

The Class Tutor

Each class has a Class Tutor – a teacher who will meet them each morning for the assembly period for 8 minutes. This constant contact means that new students have a person in the school with whom they have contact each day and to whom they can talk if there is any problem with which they need help.

The Year Head

Each year group has a Year Head Teacher who has overall responsibility for the year group. They deal with pastoral and behaviour issues in the year and have a great deal of contact with the students. We also have an attendance officer with special responsibility for attendance. If there is any difficulty with attendance or a student requires a prolonged absence from school – the attendance officer should be informed by note. The Induction Day in August for First Years First year students begin on their own in August. These days are an important orientation day for the students. It allows them a chance to get to know their school, classrooms, timetable and some of the teachers before the other year groups arrive back in school. iPads will also be deployed on these days.

The Meitheal Mentor Scheme

We have a student mentoring programme in Presentation Wexford where two students from fifth year meet with new first year students in small groups, at lunchtime, once a week for the first months of the year. It is an excellent opportunity for first year students to get to know some of the older students and to ask for their advice on issues. The Student Support Team

Presentation Secondary School Wexford has a Student Support Team in place that deals with students whose need for support might exceed those of other students in the school. The Student Support Team comprises the Principal, Deputy Principal, the Guidance Counsellors, the Special Education Needs and Learning Support coordinators. The Student Support Team meets each week and reviews the needs of all the students who receive extra supports in the school. The Student Support Team having reviewed the needs of the individual student may decide to link in with the student in school but may also decide to seek extra supports outside of the school. Year Heads, Class Tutors and Subject Teachers may raise their concerns with regard to particular students and may refer students to the Student Support Team. Members of the Student Support Team act as link people for different students who have individual needs. They check in with these individuals on a regular basis to monitor their needs and to ensure the appropriate supports are in place.

Academic Council

We encourage and support all students to strive to achieve their personal best. Achieving one’s personal best does not happen by chance – it requires commitment, focus, determination and hard work. We congratulate and acknowledge the ongoing successes and outstanding achievements of many of our students both past and present. However some students may lose focus at times and as a result do not reach their full potential. This can result in students having regrets later in their academic career. Following consultation with Parents’ Council, Student Council and teachers, the Board of Management an Academic Council was set up. The main aim of this Council is to further encourage and promote the academic success of all students by supporting students, parents and teachers in monitoring student achievement. It also aims to support parents and teachers in challenging students to set academic targets and achieve results in keeping with their ability. Academic Tracking and Change in Level procedures. The Academic Council has set up a system of active academic tracking to monitor academic performance and to support students to achieve grades in keeping with their abilities.

Reports & Parent’s Meetings

Reports on each student’s progress are uploaded to Vsware twice yearly. Formal meetings for parents of students in each year group are held annually. On these occasions parents and teachers can meet to discuss the progress being made by the student or any other matter of mutual concern. Parents are encouraged to come to these meetings as they allow us to build up the strong links between home and school which are of benefit to the students. If parents wish to discuss their daughter’s progress with a member of staff at any other time, they should contact the school office to make an appointment with the appropriate member of staff.
