Statistics and Data Science (Online) P.Grad.Cert.

Course overview.

The programme in Statistics and Data Science is a part-time course delivered fully online over three years and consisting of three component courses: a Postgraduate Certificate in year 1, a Postgraduate Diploma Top up in year 2 and Masters top up in year 3. These can be taken on a continuous basis or with interruption to the student’s course of study.

The programme provides a broad introduction to the statistical ideas and methods relevant to data gathering and analysis in a wide variety of research areas as well as business and administration. The intention is to provide students with a practical grasp of statistics based on a sound knowledge of the underlying ideas and concepts. To this end, all the material is presented in the context of practical examples from a wide range of applications.

There is only one route to enter the programme. Applicants are admitted directly to the one year part-time Postgraduate Certificate. Entry to the Diploma course is only by progression after completion of the Postgraduate Certificate. The Diploma takes 2 years part-time in total. Entry to the Masters course is only by progression after completion of the Postgraduate Certificate and Postgraduate Diploma courses. The part-time Masters takes 3 years in total to complete. The intermediate stages can be completed consecutively without any interruption to the student’s study or may be completed with interruptions as students may collect their awards at each stage and return to the Masters programme rescinding their award/s with the lifetime of the programme

Is This Course For Me?

This part-time programme is intended for graduates of disciplines, other than statistics, who want to develop and deepen their knowledge of statistical methods for solving problems involving data arising in business and industry, in public service agencies or in research.

The Certificate provides an introduction to the principal statistical methods that are used in business and industry, as well as providing background to the principles of learning from data. It also provides an introduction to some of the non-statistics elements in data science.

The Diploma deepens and extends this to more advanced and technical statistical methods and introduces further non- statistical components of data science.

The Master in Science adds a dissertation, to be completed in the third year, in close collaboration with a supervisor in the School of Computer Science and Statistics.

Graduates of the programme should be well placed to apply the ideas and methods to which they have been introduced in their own work.

Career Opportunities

The course is often taken as continuing professional development for people who need statistics to advance their career, or to move into a career where data analysis is an important aspect.  Completion of the Diploma or Masters course offers the opportunity to move to data analysis careers or a a more technical data science programme.

PhD/Research Degrees in Ireland

A PhD is the highest degree awarded at universities in Ireland. Study is based on a substantial research project in an area of academic interest, typically up to 100,000 words in length, written as a thesis which must be defended in an oral examination at the end of the programme. All PhD students are assigned a supervisor, and the duration of a PhD is typically three years full-time and six years part-time.

Very few research degrees feature taught modules, and students are expected to take more responsibility for their work and schedule. Universities in Ireland are known for their academic excellence and state-of-the-art research infrastructure, along with their support for enterprise partnerships lending much value to a PhD degree from Ireland.

PhD Entry Requirements

Irish universities are free to admit anyone to a PhD programme, with admission generally conditional on the prospective student having completed an undergraduate degree with at least upper second-class honours and a masters degree . English language ability proof is a must, and a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 is generally required. There is usually a first-year assessment to remain in study, and the thesis is submitted at the end of the completed programme.

Once you have decided on an area of research and have looked into how you will fund your study, several documents are required when submitting your application. They include:

  • Academic transcripts
  • Academic references
  • Personal statement
  • Research proposal

- PhD Research Proposal

A research proposal ( example ) is required by all students when applying to study for a PhD. The proposal should address the research you wish to undertake, how you will do it, and why it is important. A panel of experts must accept the proposal before your programme can begin.

Other types of PhD

- mphil (master of philosophy).

If you wish to study for a PhD, you may first need to begin an MPhil and then transfer to a PhD programme after 12-18 months. An MPhil is also a qualification in its own right and is generally thesis-only, lasting one year full-time and two years part-time. The thesis must present the results of a study and research and be a maximum of 60,000 words.

Students choose to study an MPhil if the proposed research has insufficient scope for a full PhD.

- MRes (Master of Research)

An MRes is an advanced postgraduate research degree in art, humanities and social sciences. Some PhDs require an MRes qualification before beginning a PhD proper, and the student must complete a 40,000-word dissertation.

An MRes is an excellent test to see if you enjoy conducting your research without fully committing to and finding funding for a full PhD.

- Professional Doctorate

Professional doctorates are similar to a PhD but are intended to advance professional practice rather than improve academic ability. Common professional doctorates include law, education, business, engineering and medicine.

How much does a PhD cost?

Funding and researching a PhD can be expensive, with non-EU students paying up to £9,000 to £30,000 per year or more, depending on the chosen programmes and institutions.

It is rare for a PhD student not to be supported by some form of bursary, grant or scholarship , and many universities and research councils provide monetary support for part or all of a PhD programme.

Considering a PhD?

Why do a PhD?

You can make a difference.

The doctoral degree is positioned at Level 10 on the National Framework of Qualifications and this degree will only be awarded where the outcome of the research makes an original and substantial contribution to knowledge.

Accomplish your career goals

Holding a PhD qualification makes you very attractive to employers looking to fill higher-level, research-driven positions. With a PhD you will be qualified for more jobs, and will have more career options than you would with a bachelor's or master's degree. It is worth noting that the vast majority of PhD graduates pursue a career outside academia.

Fulfil a journey of personal development

A PhD will develop your talents toward strategic impact whether your goals are:

  • Personal : You will demonstrate enhanced resilience, confidence, and become more articulate, strategic, deliberative/non-reactive.
  • Intellectual: You will be trained in critical appraisal, succinct communication, write cogently and fluently (to order if necessary), absorb, digest and synthesise a broad array of material, quick and efficient mastery of a complex brief, identify and focus on key issues/core problems.
  • Professional : You will learn how to effectively manage your time, workload and resources. Working with and managing colleagues, improving your ability to take the long view, and achieve strategic focus and perspective.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH EXPERIENCE IN STATISTICS

We are happy to announce Undergraduate Research Experience in Statistics (URES) to provide undergraduate Statistics students an opportunity to participate in a research experience with faculty.

  • Students will apply for specific URES topics.
  • Student researchers will enroll in STAT 391: Honors Individual Study for credit and a letter grade. This is an honors experience additional to the Statistics curriculum and the credit hours earned from the URES will not count towards major requirements for the degree.
  • To receive credit for this program, student researchers will prepare a final project presentation to showcase at the URES Symposium on the last day of instruction, Wednesday, December 11.  Additionally, students are encouraged to submit their projects for presentation at the yearly campus-wide Undergraduate Research Symposium in April.

Eligibility

  • Open to all Statistics and Stat&CS majors.
  • Faculty will select students based on an application, topics of interest, grades, and progress toward completing the Statistics degree.

Application

  • All interested students must fill out an application for consideration. Applications for the Fall 2024 semester are due by 5 pm on Monday, August 16, 2024 at 5 p.m .

Any questions? Please contact Undergraduate Advising ( [email protected] )

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

  • I’m a new student at the University of Illinois. Can I participate in URES as an incoming student or is it advisable to participate next semester onwards?

New freshman students have many other responsibilities in their first semester to lay a foundation for a successful career here. We encourage those students to apply in a later semester. Transfer students have already had some experience at the collegiate level and are welcome to apply to URES in their first semester.

  • What are my chances of getting an invitation to participate in URES?

The number of announced positions for student researchers varies per semester. It’s hard to say what one individual’s chances are of getting in because it depends on the pool of all applicants and the number of positions. My advice is to select your schedule for the coming semester as if you will not participate in URES, but have a backup plan if you do get in and need to shuffle some classes because of the added responsibility. Regardless, we encourage all students to apply for this opportunity.

  • If I don’t hear from a faculty member by the end of this semester, does that mean that I won’t have undergraduate research for next semester?

Not necessarily. The opportunities on the URES application are only the ones we know about right now. As we’ve seen in past semesters, more faculty usually step forward at the beginning or even midway through a semester. The applicant pool will continue to be circulated and available to faculty leading up to and throughout the semester.

College of Arts and Sciences

Mathematics, m.s. in statistics and data science.

The discipline of statistical sciences is concerned with the art of developing techniques to gain information and make decisions from data in the presence of uncertainty. The techniques are based on the theory and tools of the various branches of mathematics, especially probability.

A graduate education in the statistical sciences allows one an entry into many areas of physical and social sciences, medicine, business and government. There are more than 130 universities in the US that offer graduate programs in the statistical sciences. In spite of the declining graduate enrollment in most disciplines across the country, the enrollment in statistics has remained steady over the last fifteen years. An average of 1000 M.S. degrees in Statistics and Biostatistics are awarded every year. A recent study by the NSF and DOE (NSF publication 80-78) concludes that during the 90's "the supply of scientists and engineers at all degree levels will likely be more than adequate to meet demand in all fields except computer professions, statistics and some fields of engineering".

The Program

The prerequisite for admission to the M.S. degree in Statistics and Data Science is an undergraduate degree that includes at least 9 semester-hours of calculus. Students who have not had any course in linear algebra, complex variables and advanced calculus are advised to take Lehigh's Math 205 (or 244), Math 208 (or 316) and Math 301 at the earliest opportunity.

The M.S. in Statistics and Data Science requires 30 credit hours of graduate courses with at least 18 hours of 400-level courses. The choice of the courses must be approved by the graduate advisor. Up to 6 hours of coursework may be replaced with a masters thesis.  All students in the program must also pass a comprehensive examination on basic probability, statistics and linear algebra.

The M.S. program in Statistics and Data Science has two tracks, Statistics and Stochastic Modeling. The following is a guide for courses and electives in the two tracks.

New PhD Programme in Foundations of Data Science is Launched

phd statistics ireland

 - A total of 139 PhD students will benefit from this programme which will give them a world-class foundational understanding of Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Machine Learning

A new industry and Government supported PhD programme in  Foundations of Data Science was launched today by Mary Mitchell O Connor, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Education and Skills with special responsibility for Higher Education, at an event in the Royal Irish Academy, Dublin.

The  Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Centre for Research Training (CRT) in Foundations of Data Science is a large-scale collaborative initiative between University College Dublin (UCD), University of Limerick (UL), Maynooth University (MU) and industry partners and is coordinated by  Skillnet Ireland and Technology Ireland ICT Skillnet .

The CRT was announced earlier this year, with an investment of €21 million by SFI, academia and industry, to support a total of 139 PhD students to respond to the rapidly-evolving needs of Ireland’s data science industry. The first cohort of 27 PhD students will take their places at the new CRT in September.

Minister Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD said, “The Government is committed to developing Ireland’s data science industry as a globally recognised centre of excellence and will continue to support programmes such as this within higher education while also supporting industry needs by creating exciting new opportunities for innovation across all sectors”.

“This SFI Centre for Research Training will play a vital role in giving this idea due importance. The world of work is changing, and skills gained from Applied Mathematics, Statistics and Machine Learning are transferable across industries.”

“It also brings into light that we need to maintain a constant focus on what skills are required for economic competitiveness. This programme is an example of the Government’s Future Jobs initiative in practice, helping to create a future-proofed workforce and prepare for tomorrow’s economy.”

The CRT programme offers students a unique career pathway that will see them develop cutting-edge tools and technologies to provide insights to help shape industry and policy across the country. It will not only help mobilise the power of data nationally for industry across multiple sectors but will also assist in establishing Ireland as a leading data science research nation with a sustainable flow of expertise.

Professor James Gleeson (UL) is leading the Centre with co-Directors, Associate Professor Claire Gormley, UCD School of Mathematics and Statistics and Professor Ken Duffy (MU).

Dr Ruth Freeman, Director of Science for Society, Science Foundation Ireland, said, “Investment in skills development in areas like Data Sciences is important for our economy and society in Ireland. Data Science is already at the heart of many industries and will be critical for many more in the future, including to deliver efficient and effective public services."

"I would like to congratulate the researchers in the Higher Education Institutions and companies that have come together to develop this outstanding programme of training and research, which also includes diverse transferable skills.”

This industry supported programme will give students an in-depth training in the fundamental data-science skills necessary to adapt to the way data, and data-enabled technologies such as artificial intelligence, are transforming the economy.

Professor Orla Feely, UCD Vice-President for Research, Innovation and Impact said, “The SFI Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science launched today will provide an environment to train doctoral students to become data scientists and to equip them with the skills they need for the jobs of the future in areas such as data analytics, robotics and smart manufacturing. I wish the Centre first’s intake of 27 students, 9 of whom will be hosted here at UCD, every success on their PhD journeys which they have just embarked upon.”

In an environment which is increasingly difficult for organisations to find the data science talent they need to fuel their ever more data heavy strategies, students will engage with industries and enterprises, to develop an understanding of the real-world applications of data science, gaining crossover skills and an appreciation for true impact in the process.

Professor James Gleeson, University of Limerick said, “ This programme will produce graduates who will become Ireland’s future leaders, innovators, entrepreneurs and employers. Students will get a unique opportunity to work with some of the best researchers and innovative companies working in this area.”

“This programme displays the combined strengths of higher education and enterprise networks in the face of new challenges we all face in our quest to flourish as an economy. The participation of Skillnet Ireland, Irish industry and enterprise, will enable the SFI Centre for Research Training in Foundations of Data Science to create a future-proofed workforce.”

Mark Jordan, Chief Technologist, Skillnet Ireland said, “ We are delighted to provide industry support to our academic partners in the area of Data Science. This PhD programme will meet identified challenges in science and shape the future of workforce development.”

“The 139 PhD students trained will gain a foundational understanding that will make them uniquely adaptable to the rapidly-evolving needs of both Ireland’s data science industry and our economy. Research in areas of national importance will allow academia and industry to investigate the bespoke skills that are required to succeed in business but also what’s needed in the area of national importance.”

“We continue to actively develop innovative solutions for enterprise and the challenges they face through workforce planning at a strategic level. The new development and investment in this CRT will open new doors for research and education.”
