This study aimed to determine the teaching difficulties experienced by the public high school teachers of CD III of Nueva Ecija in teaching science subject in the K-12 curriculum during the school years 2014-2016. The descriptive-normative survey method was used in gathering the needed data and information. The study was conducted at public high schools in CD III of Nueva Ecija where the respondents were high school teachers teaching Grade 7 and Grade 8 Science. This study showed that teacher respondents were in the early adulthood, female and married. They were education graduates with specialization in General Sciences and have units only in Master’s degree. They were considered experienced in the teaching professions. They had very limited trainings relevant to their field of specialization. The number of their teaching loads was within 4 to 5 classes which were considered to be within the ideal. In terms of difficulties they encountered, teacher respondents had a slight problem on teaching the content of Science, in administering evaluation of students’ performance, and in teaching and administration of the lessons in Science under the K-12 curriculum. The respondent schools had a problem on the availability instructional materials, laboratory equipment and manuals on Science. Students had difficulty in performing the prescribed activities in the manual. Instructional materials like teaching manual and student’s manuals and laboratory facilities were inadequate to effectively implement the K-12 Science Curriculum. Grade 7 teachers were somewhat prepared to teach Chemistry (mean = 2.42), Biology (mean=2.47), and Earth Science (mean=2.30) but were found not well prepared in Physics (mean=1.82). Grade 8 teachers were somewhat prepared to teach Earth Science (mean = 2.24) but not well prepared in Chemistry (mean=1.9), Biology (mean=1.64) and Physics (mean = 1.63). Significant relationship between sex, highest level of education, evaluation of student’s performance, seminars and trainings teachers attended and evaluation of student’s performance. Similarly the number of classes handled by teachers and difficulty in science content and instruction were significantly related. The more classes they handled the greater was their problem in Science content. This study recommends: 1. Administrators from Division Office should encourage and allow more Science teachers to attend seminars and trainings particularly on the contents of Science in K-12. 2. Higher education institutions offering teacher’s education may review the curriculum and align this according to the demands of the new K-12 curriculum. This will enhance teachers’ preparedness to deliver the content of the K-12 curriculum. 3. More instructional materials should be provided to teachers like teaching guide and manuals, as well as more books in Science and computers so that teaching can be improved. 4. Teachers should be more creative, innovative and resourceful in devising instructional materials. 5. Administrators should regularly supervise teaching so that the problems which occur can be solved or remedied. 6. Another study can be conducted on the learning difficulties experienced by the students in Science subjects.

This study aimed to evaluate the implementation of Grade 11 Science Program of Public Secondary Schools: Teachers' Competencies and Pedagogical Practices in Teaching Science. Specifically, the study determined the extent of implementation of the program and the problems and difficulties encountered by the science teachers. The study utilized qualitative and quantitative research designs. Descriptive statistics was used to analyze the data. The respondents of the study were 304 learners and 13 teachers from nine (9) public secondary schools in the said city and were chosen using stratified random sampling. The findings of the study revealed that the curriculum standards of Grade 11 Science Program of Public Secondary Schools in Cauayan City were implemented to a great extent. The teachers, therefore, complied with the curriculum standards of the K to 12 set by the Department of Education and they performed very well in the initial implementation of the program. With the implementation of the program, teachers encountered problems seriously on the availability of printed instructional materials, presence of functional science laboratory which are vital to the hands-on activities of the learners, sufficiency of textbooks, instructional materials/teaching guidelines, and learning modules, equal opportunity to attend seminars and trainings, and preparations of two or more subjects.Teachers should continue to anchor daily lesson with the science curriculum guide. They are also encouraged to continue using English as a medium of instruction in Science. They must be sent regularly to seminar-workshops and trainings for them to be updated of the trends in Science and an equal opportunity must be exercised among teachers along this endeavor. The Department of Education through the Learning Resource Management and Development System (LRMDS) Office should make a way to provide sufficient learners' materials and learners' modules in Science to cater the needs of the learners. There should be an available printed instructional materials for the learners.

This study inquired into the preparedness of teachers in teaching K to 12 Secondary Science Curriculum (SSC) through finding out their extent of understanding on K to 12 SSC in terms of instructional contents integrated with science process skills/competencies, curriculum design, and teaching and learning approaches; the challenges encountered by teachers as to the curriculum, instructional methods, instructional materials, learning environment, and assessment/evaluation of learning; the extent of support of school head to teachers in teaching K to 12 SSC on the aspects of supervision, professional training and monitoring and evaluation. Through the researcher-made Science Teachers Preparedness Survey (STPS) Questionnaire utilized in gathering data from 62 totally enumerated respondents in a schools division, it revealed that teachers were generally well prepared and has substantial understanding on instructional contents integrated with science process skills/competencies, curriculum design, and teaching and learning approaches. However, contents involving abstract ideas and mathematical calculations, formulating models, experimenting, presenting challenges and asking students to innovate or design solutions, constructing GRASPS (Goal, Role, Audience, Situation, Performance, Standards), involving parents and families in student learning, inquiry based approach, multidisciplinary teaching, and experiential learning were least scored. On instructional materials, availability and accessibility of educational technologies were perceived as very close to being a serious problem despite the good support extended by the school head. Furthermore, minor problems were perceived on other aspects of challenges. Hence, teachers must be continuously provided with enhancement trainings on the least understood contents and providing or consulting them in the requisition of instructional materials.

This descriptive study investigated the competencies of six hundred and ten (610) teacher trainees from eight DepEd Divisions: Iloilo Province, Iloilo City, Guimaras, Passi City, Roxas City, Aklan, and Antique before and after a week-long live-in training and their readiness to implement Grade 10 Science. Teachers were trained on content subjects such as Earth and Space; Force, Motion and Energy; Matter; and Living Things and their environment; K -12 Updates, Pedagogy and Assessment. Data representing teachers’ competencies showed average competencies both in Force, Motion and Energy and in the Overall Content of the Program and low in Earth and Space; Living Things and their Environment; and in Matter before the training. After the training, this was also elevated to the average level with a slight increase in the mean scores in each area. The adequate increase in teachers' competencies is confirmed by their substantial learning on various approaches and strategies in teaching especially on contextualization, localization or indigenization, and differentiated instruction; Science content and 21st Century skills; and the Goals, Features and Updates of the K to 12 Curriculum. These outcomes seem to suggest that the training was able to accomplish its desired goals and objectives. Teachers also gave the impression that they were likewise ready to implement Grade 10 Science. Accompanying this are their perceived challenges especially their lack of mastery of the content especially for the specialists and the perennial problem on scarcity of teaching and learning materials such as books, laboratory chemicals, and equipment. To these trepidations it is recommended that a follow-up intensive upgrading training both on content subjects and pedagogy be provided by the Department of Education for a longer period especially for non-major teachers. In addition, teachers can also work collaboratively to write lesson exemplars using strategies and assessment tools that can enhance students' learning and appreciation of science. These outputs can also be tried out in time in the field under supervision. It is also suggested that the Department of Education may include as part of their agenda, the monitoring and evaluation of the different trainings which were implemented focusing on the K to 12 Science Curriculum. This can assess whether, the program have addressed constructively the educational needs in the province.

The purpose of this research is to identify the problems that teachers have experienced during the implementation of the science curriculum and their suggestions for solution to these problems. In the research, survey model has been used among the descriptive research methods in which quantitative and qualitative data have been used together. The sample of the research consists of science teachers (n=208) and classroom teachers who deliver science courses (n=104) in Manisa province. A questionnaire form and a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers have been used as data collection tools. For quantitative data, percentage and frequency values have been analysed and for qualitative data, content analysis have been performed. As a result of the analyses the problems encountered in the implementation of the curriculum have been examined in three different categories namely; teacher-related problems, curriculum-related problems and other problems. According to the results of the questionnaire, most of the teachers think that they confront with problems because they do not see themselves sufficient in terms of designing/evaluating a project, designing an experiment and creating an activity. In terms of the program, the majority of teachers think that they encounter with problems as there is not enough information about the implementation of the inquiry-based learning approach and not enough examples and explanations for the learning outcomes. In addition, nearly half of the teachers’ state that they have problems with the use of alternative assessment tools and techniques in the program. Regarding other problems; the insufficient content of the course book, lack of materials, lack of adequate support from parents, and technological inadequacies are among the problems most of the teachers have experienced. Similarly, when the results of interviews have been examined; materials, laboratories, and the inadequacy of the course book are among the most frequently mentioned problems. When the survey results of teachers' suggestions for solution have been examined; putting more emphasis on teachers’ views in the process of curriculum development, revision of curricula of education faculties oriented to the changes in curriculum, preparation of flexible curricula according to students’ needs, improvement of technological infrastructure of schools and classes, preparation of guidebooks for teachers, raising the knowledge levels of parents about the instruction program, providing an in-service training for designing experiments/projects are among the most frequently selected recommendations from teachers. When the interview results have been examined, it has been seen that most of the suggestions are about increasing the number and quality of in-service trainings and increasing the quality of laboratory and material facilities and textbooks. Since the newly announced science curriculum will be gradually implemented as of 2017-2018 academic year, it is expected that the results of the study will contribute to the field in terms of the problems and solution suggestions for the current curriculum, the program development and update studies, the contents of in-service trainings and comparison of the curricula.

This study hinges on the theory of evaluation. Frequent, continuous and impartial evaluation of academic performance is vital not only for the growth of the institution but also for the growth of the individual. The perceptions of students, teachers and supervisors were evaluated to determine the competence of science teacher along instruction in Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU-NLUC), College of Education, Philippines. This research utilized a mixed descriptive-quantitative method of investigation. Using a structured survey questionnaire, the demographic profile and competence of the science teachers were measured. It was found that science teachers with less than ten training points significantly reduced their competence in terms of their personal character, teaching efficiency, general class atmosphere, and substantiality of teaching and evaluation skills. Other personal and professional demographic profiles were also found to have an influence on the competence of science teachers along instruction. These include the number of children, sex, educational attainment, length of service and workload preparation. In conclusion, it is apparent the science teachers' competence is affected by both demographic background of the educators and their personal and professional trainings. This study reveals that knowledge of specific factors that affect science teachers' competence is necessary in improving the mode of instruction, pedagogy and trainings for science teachers to ensure quality teaching.

The study aimed to determine the factors affecting the performance in Science of grade six pupils in Sta. Cruz Elementary School. The study considered 311 grade six pupils as respondents of the study. The sample size was determined utilizing the Slovin's formula. They were chosen through simple random sampling technique. They were described in terms of sex, monthly family income, sibling position and parents' educational attainment. Descriptive survey design was applied utilizing a researcher-made questionnaire-checklist as the main instrument in gathering the needed data on the factors affecting the performance in Science of grade six pupils with respect to learning environment, study habits and peer influence. Likewise, documentary analysis was applied since the average grades of the pupils in Science were utilized to determine the level of their academic performance. The study revealed that the pupil-respondents are mostly males. Majority belong to families with more than three children. Most of them belongs to families with monthly income below ₱10,000. Most of the parents did not finish their college education. Learning environment, study habits and peer influence often affect the academic performance in Science of the grade six pupils. Sex, monthly family income and mother's educational attainment are Significant on the extent of the factors affecting the performance in Science of the respondents. On the other hand, sibling position and mothers' educational attainment are not significant. Grade six pupils obtained Satisfactory performance in Science as revealed by their average grades in the subject in the first grading period. The test rejected the null hypothesis for the correlation between the perceived extent of the factors and academic performance of the pupils. That study concluded that the perceived extent of the factors affecting the performance in Science of the pupils with respect to learning environment, study habits and peer influence differ significantly when they are grouped according to sex, monthly family income and mother's educational attainment. Academic performance of pupils is significantly associated on the learning environment, study habits and peer influence. The study recommended that teachers should continuously maintain the positive learning environment to enhance pupils' performance in Science. Pupils should be motivated and monitored to improve their study habits thereby improving their academic performance. Pupils should be exposed to varied learning activities to enhance their level of interest, attitude and performance. The proposed plan of action is recommended for implementation. Similar studies may be conducted considering other variables.

The study investigated the curriculum content knowledge of science teachers and its effects on the academic performance of pupils. Theory of teachers' knowledge and constructivist learning theory formed the framework that guided the study. The study used a mixed methods design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative techniques to collect data. The sample consisted of 59 public Junior High school science teachers. A questionnaire on science teachers' curriculum knowledge (STCK) and science teacher's assessment practices (STAP) was used to collect quantitative data while a classroom observation schedule was used to collect qualitative data on teachers' classroom science instructional practice (STIP). The study revealed that the teachers have weak science background knowledge. The teachers' curriculum knowledge influenced science teachers' instructional and assessment practices thus contributing to the pupils' poor performance in science. Also, the Junior High School science teachers' curriculum content knowledge was weak. The Junior High School science teachers' preferred teaching method was teacher-centred instead of learner-centred. A number of implications for science teachers' curriculum knowledge instruction and assessment practices and its relation to pupils' academic performance were made. The study therefore recommend that teachers' background and science curriculum knowledge should be assessed before assigning them to teach science at the junior high schools but not just a trained teacher.
