In previous classes we studied about 2D and 3D shapes. Two Dimensional Shapes have length and breadth. Whereas, Three Dimensional Shapes have Length, Breadth and Height.

We studied 3D shapes like Cube, Cuboid, Cone, Cylinder, Prism, Sphere, Hemisphere

But, in reality

3D Shapes are a combination of shapes. Like: Ice cream Cone has Cone at bottom, and hemisphere on top.

In this chapter, we will study

  • Top View, Front View, Side View of 3 Dimensional Objects
  • Then, we will learn how to draw and label a map.
  • And what scale in a map is
  • Then, we learn what a Polyhedron is
  • And what is a convex , not-convex and a regular polyhedron
  • The difference between Prism and Pyramid
  • Then, we will study how to find Faces ( F ), Edges ( E ) and Vertices ( V ) of different polyhedrons
  • And learn about Euler's Formula - F + V - E = 2

(i) No, such polyhedrons are not possible. A polyhedron should have a minimum of 4 faces.

(ii) Yes, a triangular pyramid has 4 triangular faces.

(iii) Yes, as a square pyramid has a square face and 4 triangular faces.

2. Is it possible to have a polyhedron with any given number of faces? (Hint: Think of a pyramid)

It is possible only if the number of faces is greater than or equal to 4.

3. Which are prisms among the following:

NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 10 - 13

(i) A nail: It is not a prism.

(ii) Unsharpened pencil: It is a prism.

(iii) A table weight: It is not a prism.

(iv) A box: It is a prism.

4. (i) How are prisms and cylinders alike?

(ii) How are pyramids and cones alike?

(i) A cylinder can look like a circular prism, a prism with a circular base.

(ii) A cone can be a circular pyramid, a pyramid with a circular base.

5. Is a square prism the same as a cube? Explain.

Yes, a square prism can also be a cube. A square prism has a square as its base. However, its height is not necessarily the same as the side of the square. Thus, a square prism can also be a cuboid.

6. Verify Euler’s formula for the given solids.

NCERT Solutions for Class 8 Maths Chapter 10 - 14

(i) Number of faces, F = 7

Number of edges, E = 15

Number of vertices, V = 10

As per formula, F + V – E = 2

Substitute the values, we have

F + V – E = 7 + 10 – 15

Hence, verified.

(ii) Here, F = 9, V = 9 and E = 16

Using formula, F+ V – E = 2

F + V – E = 9 + 9 – 16 = 2

Hence, Euler’s formula is verified.

7. Using Euler’s formula, find the unknown:

Faces ? 5 20
Vertices 6 ? 12
Edges 12 9 ?

Euler’s formula: F + V – E = 2

Where, F = Faces, V = Vertices and E = Edges

(i) F + 6 – 12 = 2

(ii) 5 + V – 9 = 2

V – 4 = 2

⇒ V = 4 + 2

(iii) 20 + 12 – E = 2

32 – E = 2

⇒ E = 32 – 2

8. Can a polyhedron have 10 faces, 20 edges and 15 vertices?

From the given data, we have

Every polyhedron satisfies Euler’s formula, which is stated as, F + V – E = 2

For the given polygon,

F + V – E = 10 + 15 – 20 = 25 – 20 = 5, which is not equal to 2.

Therefore, a polyhedron cannot have 10 faces, 20 edges and 15 vertices , as Euler’s formula is not satisfied.

Revision Notes on Visualizing Solid Shapes

Two-dimensional shapes.

Plane figures with only two measurements –length and width are called 2-D shapes.

Two-dimensional shapes

Three-dimensional shapes

Solid figures with three measurements –length, width and height are called 3D shapes.

Three-dimensional shapes

Views of 3D-Shapes

As the 3-D shapes are solid in nature so they may have a different view from different sides.

Views of 3D-Shapes

When we draw the top view, front view and side view on paper then it will look like this.

Views of 3D-Shapes

Draw the front view, side view and the top view of the given figure.

Example

Mapping Space around Us

A map shows the location of a particular thing with respect to others.

Some important points related to map:

To represent different objects or place different symbols are used.

A map represents everything proportional to their actual size not on the basis of perspective. It means that the size of the object will remain the same irrespective of the observer’s viewpoint.

A particular scale is used to draw a map so that the lengths drawn are proportional with respect to the size of the original figures.

Some important points related to map:

This is the map which shows the different routes from Nehru road.

Faces, Edges and Vertices

Faces  – All the flat surfaces of the three 3-D shapes are the faces. Solid shapes are made up of these plane figures called faces.

Edges – The line segments which make the structure of the solid shapes are called edges. The two faces meet at the edges of the 3D shapes.

Vertex – The corner of the solid shapes is called vertex. The two edges meet at the vertex. The plural of the vertex is vertices.

Polyhedrons

Polygons are the flat surface made up of line segments. The 3-D shapes made up of polygons are called polyhedron.

These solid shapes have faces, edges and vertices.

The polygons are the faces of the solid shape.

Three or more edges meet at a point to form a vertex.

The plural of word polyhedron is polyhedral.

Polyhedrons

Non-polyhedron

The solid shape who’s all the faces are not polygon are called non-polyhedron. i.e. it has one of the curved faces.

Non-polyhedron

Convex Polyhedrons

If the line segment formed by joining any two vertices of the polyhedron lies inside the figure then it is said to be a convex polyhedron.

Convex Polyhedrons

Non-convex or Concave Polyhedron

If anyone or more line segments formed by joining any two vertices of the polyhedron lie outside the figure then it is said to be a non-convex polyhedron.

Non-convex or Concave Polyhedron

Regular Polyhedron

If all the faces of a polyhedron are regular polygons and its same number of faces meets at each vertex then it is called regular polyhedron.

Non-regular Polyhedron

The polyhedron which is not regular is called non-regular polyhedron. Its vertices are not made by the same number of faces.

Non-regular Polyhedron

In this figure, 4 faces meet at the top point and 3 faces meet at all the bottom points.

If the top and bottom of a polyhedron are a congruent polygon and its lateral faces are parallelogram in shape, then it is said to be a prism.

If the base of a polyhedron is the polygon and its lateral faces are triangular in shape with a common vertex, then it is said to be a pyramid.

Pyramid

6 12 8
5 9 6
7 15 10
8 18 12
5 8 5
4 6 6

Euler’s formula

Euler’s formula shows the relationship between edges, faces and vertices of a polyhedron.

Every polyhedron will satisfy the criterion F + V – E = 2,

Where F is the number of faces of the polyhedron, V is the vertices of the polyhedron and E is the number of edges of the polyhedron.

Using Euler's formula, find the number of faces if the number of vertices is 6 and the number of edges is 12.

Given, V = 6 and E = 12.

We know Euler’s formula, F + V – E = 2

So, F + 6 – 12 = 2.

Hence, F = 8.

There are Three Different Kinds of Shapes

In this part of Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 10 Notes , students will learn about different shapes.

  • One-dimensional shapes: These are shapes with only length as a dimension. Think about the following illustration—a line.
  • Two-dimensional shapes :  Two-dimensional shapes have length and breadth as their two dimensions. Shapes include things like rectangles, triangles, and polygons. The term “2D figures” is often used to describe two-dimensional objects.
  • Three-dimensional shapes: Three-dimensional shapes are solid objects and shapes that have length, breadth, height, and depth. Examples of geometric shapes include cubes, cylinders, cones, cuboids, spheres, and others.
  • Faces: A flat or curved surface on a three-dimensional figure is known as a face.
  • Edges: Two faces of a solid are connected by a line segment known as an edge.
  • Polyhedron: Polyhedron refers to a three-dimensional figure with polygonal faces.
  • Prism: It is a polyhedron with parallelograms on the lateral faces and congruent polygons on the bottom and top faces (referred to as bases). The shape is referred to as a right prism when the side faces are rectangles.
  • Pyramid: It is a polyhedron with a polygon base and triangle lateral sides.
  • A place on a graph on which three or more edges converge is known as a vertex.
  • Base: The face on which a polyhedron is named is its base.
  • Euler’s formula for any polyhedron is F+V−E=2, where F is the number of faces, V is the number of vertices, and E is the number of edges.
  • Object recognition in 2D and 3D.
  • Views of a 3D object may differ based on their position.
  • Mapping means where one object or place is in relation to other objects or places.
  • Symbols are used to denote various objects and locations on a map.
  • There is no reference or viewpoint on a map.
  • The scale of a map is predetermined for each map.
  • Convex means any two points on a polyhedron’s surface that can be connected by a line segment that is entirely inside or on the polyhedron, such as the cube, cuboid, tetrahedron, pyramid, and prism.

A Quick Overview Of Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 10 Visualising Solid Shapes

Students will learn about visualising solid shapes, views of three-dimensional shapes, mapping our surroundings, and the faces, edges, and vertices of three-dimensional shapes in these Class 8 Mathematics Chapter 10 Notes . Let us now discuss the topics and subtopics covered in this chapter.

Ex.10.1 – Introduction to the Chapter

You must have studied different solid and plane shapes in your previous classes.   Because they only have two measurements, length, and breadth, plane shapes are also referred to as two-dimensional shapes. In contrast, solid shapes are referred to as three-dimensional shapes because they have three dimensions—length, breadth, and height. The solid shapes also take up some room. 2-D and 3-D figures are also referred to as two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, respectively.

Ex.10.2 – View Of 3D-Shapes

You will gain knowledge about the views of various three-dimensional shapes, such as cones, cylinders, cubes, spheres, etc., in this section. You will learn that three-dimensional objects can be drawn from a perspective as they look different from different positions. You will discover that 3-D shapes have a front, top, and side view. Some real-life examples are given to help you understand the concept clearly.

Ex. 10.3 –  Mapping Around Us

You have been using maps in your previous classes. You must have been asked to mark rivers, mountains, states, countries, cities, etc., on a map by your geography teachers. Your history teachers must have asked you to find a specific location where a certain event had taken place in the past.

You will learn how to read maps in this section. What conclusions and concepts can you draw from studying maps? What information do they provide, and what information do they not provide?

Ex.10.3 – Faces, Edges, And Vertices

In this part, you will learn about the faces, edges, and vertices of three-dimensional shapes. You will also understand the total number of edges, faces, and vertices different 3-D shapes include.

To successfully answer questions based on various solid and plane shapes, students should have a thorough understanding of these concepts.

FAQs (Frequently Asked Questions)

1. find the number of vertices of hexagonal prisms..

Number of vertices = 2 × Number of sides = 2 × 6 = 12

2. What is Euler’s formula for polyhedron?

According to Euler’s polyhedron formula, any solid shape will always equal 2 when the number of vertices (V) is subtracted from the number of edges (E) and added to the number of faces (F).

So, V – E + F = 2

3. What will be the minimum number of planes required to form a solid?

At least four planes are required to form a solid. The solid formed using only four planes is called a tetrahedron or a triangular pyramid.

4. What do you mean by polyhedron?

It refers to a three-dimensional figure with polygonal faces.

5. What do you mean by one-dimensional figure?

A one-dimensional figure means shapes with only length as a dimension.

Pyramid: A pyramid is a polyhedron whose base is a polygon of quite a few sides and whose different countenances are triangles with a typical vertex. A pyramid has 1 square face, 4 three-sided faces, 5 vertices and 8 edges.

Tetrahedron: A pyramid is known as a three-sided pyramid on the off chance that its base is a triangle. A three-sided pyramid is likewise called a tetrahedron.

Plane shapes have two aspects (estimations) like length and broadness while a strong item has three estimations like length, expansiveness and level (or profundity). To that end they are called two-layered shapes and three-layered shapes, individually. They are momentarily named as 2-D and three-dimensional figures, separately. Triangles, square shapes, circles, and so forth, are 2-D figures while blocks, chambers, cones, circles, and so on, are three-dimensional figures.

Perspectives on three-dimensional Shapes: 3-layered objects look uniquely in contrast to various positions. Thus, they can be drawn according to alternate points of view like the top view, front view, and side view.

  • Faces, edges and vertices of solid shapes
  • Nets for building 3-D shapes
  • Drawing solids on a flat surface
  • Visualising different section of a solid

Plane figures are of two-dimensions and solid figures are of three-dimensions. In a solid figure, the corners are the vertices, the line segments are its edges and its flat surface are its faces.

A net is an arrangement of plane figures connected at their edges, lying in the same plane, that can be folded to make a three-dimensional solid.

Figures drawn on paper are called plane figure. Solid figures are those figures which occupy space.

Case study questions from the above given topic may be asked.

Plane figures are 2-dimensional, while solids are 3-dimensional. Visualising solid shapes is a very useful skill. You should be able to see ‘hidden’ parts of the solid shape.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on Visualizing Solid Shapes Case Study

Q1: what are solid shapes.

A1: Solid shapes are three-dimensional figures that have length, breadth, and height. Common examples of solid shapes include cubes, cuboids, cones, and cylinders. Unlike two-dimensional shapes, these objects occupy space and can be viewed from different perspectives.

Q2: What is the difference between 2D and 3D shapes?

A2: 2D shapes have only two dimensions—length and breadth—and can be drawn on flat surfaces, like squares or circles. In contrast, 3D shapes have three dimensions—length, breadth, and height—like cubes or spheres. While 2D shapes can be represented easily on paper, 3D shapes are visualized as solid objects that occupy space.

Q3: What are oblique and isometric sketches?

A3: An oblique sketch is a simple way to represent a 3D object on a 2D plane. It gives a distorted view because one side is drawn at an angle. An isometric sketch , on the other hand, provides a more accurate representation of a solid object, with all dimensions to scale, giving a clearer idea of how the object looks from different angles

Q4: How can we visualize cross-sections of solids?

A4: Cross-sections are the shapes you get when you slice a solid object along a plane. For example, cutting a cylinder horizontally would give a circular cross-section, while cutting a cube horizontally or vertically would give a square cross-section.

Q5: How are shadows of 3D objects formed?

A5: Shadows of 3D objects depend on the shape of the object and the angle of light. For example, a cube can cast a square or rectangular shadow, while a cylinder can cast a circular or rectangular shadow based on how light falls on it. Visualizing shadows helps in understanding how 3D objects interact with light.

Q6: What are polyhedrons?

A6: Polyhedrons are three-dimensional shapes with flat faces. Each face is a polygon, and the edges of the polygons meet at vertices. Common examples of polyhedrons include cubes (with square faces) and pyramids (with triangular faces). A polyhedron is named based on the shape and number of its faces.

Q7: How do you calculate the number of faces, edges, and vertices of a solid shape?

A7: For polyhedrons, the relationship between the number of faces (F), edges (E), and vertices (V) is given by Euler’s formula: V − E + F = 2 This formula helps in identifying the structure of a polyhedron. For example, a cube has 8 vertices, 12 edges, and 6 faces, satisfying Euler’s formula.

Q10: Are there any online resources or tools available for practicing Visualizing Solid Shapes case study questions?

A10: We provide case study questions for CBSE Class 7 Maths on our  website . Students can visit the website and practice sufficient case study questions and prepare for their exams. If you need more case study questions, then you can visit Physics Gurukul website. they are having a large collection of case study questions for all classes.
