Chen X. Chen, PhD, RN, joins Nursing as Sorensen Endowed Professor

College of Nursing

Chen X. Chen, PhD, RN, MBBS, will join the University of Arizona College of Nursing as the Sorensen Endowed Professor focused on improving the health, well-being and health care of individuals, families and communities. She begins Aug. 5.

Chen joins the college from the Indiana University School of Nursing, where she is an associate professor. She has dedicated her career to the study of dysmenorrhea, commonly known as menstrual pain. Chen said dysmenorrhea affects more than half of females of reproductive age and can increase the risk for other chronic pain conditions. As a principal investigator, Chen has received more than $3 million in extramural funding, including a current R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health.

“I am looking forward to the opportunity to collaborate with the talented faculty, staff and students within and beyond the College of Nursing,” said Chen. “The chance to work alongside experts in pain and symptom management, women’s health, health equity, biobehavioral health and integrative health is incredibly exciting. When I visited the campus and interacted with my future colleagues, I had a strong impression that the environment here is intellectually stimulating, collaborative and nurturing.”

Chen collaborates nationally and internationally in the areas of pain, women’s health and research methodologies. She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers. Her research has been cited by scholars from 50 countries and featured in popular media outlets.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Chen join the faculty of the College of Nursing,” said Brian Ahn, PhD , dean of the College of Nursing. “Her research directly impacts so many women who have often suffered in silence. Her ability to inspire students to follow how dysmenorrhea can have long-lasting and widespread impact on patient health means our graduates will be better prepared to advance a healthier Arizona.”

Chen is a dedicated mentor, having guided undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Her commitment to teaching was recognized with the Indiana University Trustees Teaching Award.

Chen, who has moved to Tucson with her husband and two children, said she is excited to experience what the region has to offer.

“I am fascinated by the desert landscapes, cultural richness and outdoor activities,” Chen said. “I enjoy biking and hiking with my family, and we are thrilled about the amazing access to biking and hiking trails here. We love visiting national parks, and it is a dream come true to live within an hour of one.”

Chen received her PhD in Nursing from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her postdoctoral fellowship from Indiana University. Chen has a Bachelor of Medicine from the Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science and Technology in China. Chen is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing.

Meet UNM College of Nursing’s New Dean

${alt}

Rosario Medina, PhD, FNP-BC, ACNP, CNS, FAANP, FAAN began her tenure as the 12 th dean of The University of New Mexico College of Nursing on June 3, 2024.  She brings more than 43 years of active nursing experience and decades of academic leadership to the role. Just over two months into her role, Medina already has big plans to grow the College and its reach across New Mexico.

As dean, Medina plans on building academic programs to prepare a highly diverse workforce, and evidence-based clinical environments for student experience and research, developing collaborations to create clinical enterprises for the College of Nursing. These clinics will not only serve New Mexico communities, but also create new clinical placements for nursing students and provide a place for nursing research. Medina also intends to grow the College’s nursing research and focusing on how to benefit New Mexico communities by tackling health disparities and chronic illnesses.

phd nursing birmingham

I know that I'm coming into a highly energized, passionate College of Nursing that has a history of being innovative. I see my role as one of continuous networking, understanding and bringing resources to build the College’s future and encourage curiosity and passion to propel the profession of nursing forward in all facets.

Currently she is focusing on learning the College, university and state. Medina plans to make visits across New Mexico to visit with partnering educational institutions and clinical sites. All the while learning more about the needs of the communities in those areas.

Prior to joining the UNM College of Nursing, she was the associate dean of clinical and community affairs at the University of Colorado- Anschutz College of Nursing in Aurora, Colorado, where she had the executive oversight of more than 140 faculty and staff in multiple faculty-managed clinical enterprises serving the Denver metro and rural Colorado. They included five midwifery practices, a campus community primary clinic, three integrative federally funded health centers, and two pediatric primary care clinics all focused on caring for underserved populations.

Medina served as an educational leader in a variety of roles at the University of Colorado. They included associate dean for academic affairs for the graduate programs, assistant dean for graduate nursing where she was responsible for 15 master’s programs, assistant dean for graduate student affairs, and as the director of the Doctor of Nursing Program. Medina also promoted pathway programs into nursing and served as a mentor to aspiring nurses.

As a family nurse practitioner for 25 years and researcher Medina has become an expert in understanding underserved populations and knowledgeable in community-based research aimed at changing practice to positively influence health care outcomes in underrepresented populations. Her research focuses on the health beliefs, values and needs of the underserved Hispanic population, specifically in screening and prevention of chronic diseases, medication assisted treatment for opioid use disorders in Colorado’s underserved frontier and rural counties, and the impact of shifting to tele-health during COVID.

PhD student Lily Chen speaks at White House AANHPI Mental Health Convening

phd nursing birmingham

On July 24, Lily Chen, a second-year PhD student and Royster Fellow at the UNC School of Nursing, participated in the White House AANHPI Mental Health Convening . The event brought together key representatives from the White House, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), U.S. Health & Human Services, and community leaders to discuss the challenges Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (AANHPI) face in accessing mental health care.

Notable attendees included Erika Moritsugu, Deputy Assistant to the President and AA and NHPI Senior Liaison, White House Chief of Staff; Admiral Rachel L. Levine, MD, U.S. Assistant Secretary for Health; and Larke Huang, Director of the Office of Behavioral Health Equity at SAMHSA. The convening covered crucial issues such as strategies to combat AANHPI hate, access to the 988 mental health crisis hotline, data disaggregation to improve comprehensive care, development of a behavioral health workforce tailored to AANHPI communities, and language justice in mental health care.

During a panel discussion, community leaders like Soha Mahapatra and Ethan Su from AAPI Youth Rising spoke about the mental health challenges faced by AANHPI youth, particularly the pressures stemming from the model minority myth. In response, Lily Chen, serving as the Executive Director of the UCA WAVES Youth Mental Health Collaborative, emphasized the essential role of parents in supporting youth mental health. She highlighted the barriers posed by a lack of mental health awareness and stigma among older Chinese immigrants. Lily advocated for parental education and stressed the importance of involving community voices in developing solutions, with the phrase “Nothing About Us Without Us.” She also called for increased investment in building research capacity within community organizations, citing UCA WAVES’ efforts in using research to support community education and programs.
