It is important to make a good impression of yourself as a potential employee, but not to appear too boastful about your achievements.

Covering letters are a unique selling tool when approaching a prospective employer directly, and are vitally important to applications sent by overseas candidates. This is your chance to capture the attention of a New Zealand employer and demonstrate the qualities that set you apart from the other applicants.
Your cover letter should ideally not exceed one A4 side, with well-spaced lines.
Wherever possible, account point-by-point for each of the requirements listed by the employers and detail how you are qualified to meet these requirements.
Use strong, active verbs that demonstrate actions and accomplishments, for example, ‘organise’ and ‘supervise.’
Do a bit of research, and, if a name is not supplied try to find out who the application is going to. Do not forget to include your own contact details, though these should be on your CV regardless.
Your letter should include an introduction and identification of the position (for example, the reference number used in the job advert), relevant qualifications and your current position, and a summary of how you meet their core skill set.
Identify your skills, experience and attributes that match the employer’s criteria. It can sometimes be helpful to use the same headings that they have supplied, with a short sentence or two addressing each one. Look for keywords that reveal what attributes they are looking for, and show how you embody them. If you can demonstrate that you meet the essential criteria, you will greatly increase your chances of an interview.
Again, this should go without saying. Have a trusted friend or colleague to review both your CV and cover letter, prior to applying. It is vital that there are no errors if you want to be taken seriously.

Along with your CV, a cover letter is essential to any NZ job application. Let's get you started.
Every New Zealand job application should include a cover letter.
This document is key to showing an employer you’re serious about their vacancy, and for demonstrating what you bring to the table . Despite its importance, many people aren’t sure how to write a cover letter – and their applications suffer as a result.
That’s why we’ve created this guide, giving you advice on everything from what to include, to how to lay it out.
We’ve also snuck in a few examples to make life even easier for you … aren’t we nice?
To understand the role cover letters play in job applications, it’s important to realise how they differ from CVs:
1. Purpose:
CVs give a broad picture of you as an applicant – providing details such as educational background and employment history . By contrast, a cover letter targets why you want this specific role, and how your skills and experience make you a great candidate.
While there will be areas of overlap as you select qualifications or abilities to draw out in your cover letter, it definitely should not be an elongated version of your CV.
An NZ cover letter should be no longer than one page, while CVs are usually between one and two.
The most obvious visual difference between these documents and CVs hinges around bullet points.
While your CV should be a bullet point bonanza, cover letters favour full sentences. That’s not to say you can’t have any bullets in a cover letter, just use them more sparingly.
You should include a cover letter with every job application.
1. your contact info, the date and the business’ address.
At the top of your cover letter should be:
It should look like this:
Head up your cover letter like this.
People worry about how to start a cover letter , but there’s a simple formula and structure for getting this right:
Make it personal : start with ‘dear’, and address it to a person – i.e. the hiring manager. If their name isn’t in the job listing, try a good old fashioned stalk of the company website, or ring the business and find out. ‘To whom it may concern’ is a no go.
Make it clear : organisations often list multiple vacancies at a time, so make it obvious which position you’re applying for. A sentence like, ‘I’m writing to apply for the Marketing Assistant role, as advertised on Trade Me Jobs’, will do the trick.
Make it punchy : next, add a snappy one-liner summing up why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to their business. Remember, you can go into more detail in the interview itself. For example:
A common cover letter mistake is to only focus on yourself. Before choosing you, employers want to know why you’re choosing them. This helps sort candidates who are genuinely passionate about their organisation from those who are mass applying to anything and everything.
Warning : this section is not about inflating the hiring manager's ego by flattering the company – be positive, but be thoughtful.
Now, it’s time to sell yourself.
This section of your cover letter is where you highlight your most relevant skills and experience.
You can draw on anything from previous work experience to certificates and qualifications. The important bit is linking whatever you mention to the job – simply listing skills is not the answer.
To do this effectively, you need to carefully study the job ad and identify what capabilities the employer values most. If your Trade Me Jobs Profile is up-to-date, you can then quickly skim your skills and experience to find those which most closely match the job description.
Top tip: the more detail you can give, the better. Helped raise sales? Great. Helped raise sales by 6%? Even better.
If you want to add some extra skills or information to this section, a bullet point list is a good option. Note : only do this after introducing your headline examples in full sentence form, as above, and keep your list to three or four concise bullets.
The end of your cover letter should (politely) prompt the reader to get in touch with you to arrange the next steps. Make sure you end on a high, and continue the energy from earlier in your closing sentence, for example:
With your content sorted, it’s now about nailing the visuals. Cover letters are usually easier than CVs in this regard, as they’re laid out like a traditional letter. However, there are a few things to bear in mind:
All done? Not quite.
Perhaps the most important stage of cover letter writing is proofreading. After all that hard work, you don’t want a few silly typos or poor punctuation letting you down.
So check it yourself, then get someone else to have a look, then have a final glance.
Once you’re happy, it’s time to attach it to your application, and hit send.

I would like to apply for an Australian Tourist Visa for myself, RICARDO DALISAY, and for my mother, GLORIA DALISAY, to cover our intention to travel to your state from April 1 to 6, 2020.
We will be visiting Melbourne. The main purpose of our travel is tourism. Over the past five years, I have been to Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Hong Kong. I returned to the Philippines after every trip, and I have NEVER overstayed a visa ever.
I travel with my mother every year to have quality time with her. This year, I am hoping I could bring her to Melbourne so she could enjoy the many attractions including the Great Ocean Road, Brighton Beach, and Port Campbell.
We trust that you will find everything in order and remain at your disposal for any further information you may need. Thank you so much. Hoping for a favorable response.

Employment certificate, financial documents, and income tax return (ITR) are the staples of most visa applications. But there is one document that is usually overlooked — the cover letter.
A cover letter isn’t always a requirement when applying for a visa. However, it’s something that we often recommend to add to your pile of documents, especially if there is no interview and you have some explaining to do.
You see, sometimes, things don’t always fit the mold perfectly. There are cases wherein you can’t provide the exact document needed, but you have a very good alternative. Or maybe you just can’t provide something at all, but you have a perfectly valid reason. Or perhaps you’re traveling with a group or for a special purpose. These instances could probably benefit from a well-crafted explanation to give the visa officer a clearer picture of your situation.
When I apply for a visa, I usually submit a cover letter regardless of whether or not it’s one of the requirements. I always want to give a summary of my application and clarify some aspects that may be prone to misinterpretation.
WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS GUIDE?
For me, a good cover letter must be able to provide the following:
Looks like a lot, huh? But here’s the thing: According to a couple of friends who used to work as visa officers at strict embassies, they usually had very little time to assess each application. Hence, if you’re going to make a cover letter, go straight to the point . One page should be enough. The key is being concise — finding the balance between giving enough information and keeping it short and sweet.
Here are some samples. I intentionally used complicated situations to give you an idea how I usually explain them. If they don’t apply to you, feel free to modify these to match your case. Please use this only as a model for your own cover letter. Please do not copy-paste the whole thing without adjustments.

where to attach cover letter for Australia Visa application?
In my case, I uploaded it under Evidence of Planned Tourism Activities > Others.
Hello, I will be applying for a Japan visa and will submit a cover letter din. I have a few questions:
sorry habang nagtatype ako nadadagdagan questions ko haha. sana masagot parin. Thank you sa travel guides. Super helpful. :)
This is for Japan ha.
1. You may indicate your companions. Ako I prefer na imention sila to show na travel with friends talaga.
2. OK lang kahit isa lang kung sa tingin mo strong enough ung account na yun. Pwede ring madami if feeling mo di enough ung isa lang.
3. Naeempty ba ung payroll account when u transfer?
4. Bank cert lang naman ang need ng Japan so kahit walang statement, ok lang.
5. If hindi ka magsusubmit ng statement, di na need iexplain kasi hindi lalabas. :)
I plan to visit Canada and have started my visa application. I selected visit friend for purpose instead of tourism as I would like to be fully honest with my application. My very purpose is to be with my boyfriend and meet his family and friends. Touring comes as a bonus. Would it be fine to add captions or narrations on the pdf document together with our pictures as proof? I also have our hotel and tour bookings and his boarding passes on the two times that he has visited me here in PH. This is the Proof of Relationship section on the application visa.

Depending on which country you’re from, you can stay in New Zealand for 3 months under a Visitor Visa. But what if circumstances cause you to stay there for longer than 3 months? This is when you need to write a bona fide.
Hence, this post is for you if you need to write up a bona fide to get a visitor’s visa (specifically the one for New Zealand).
It may also serve as a useful reference even if you are not going to New Zealand.
PS: If you want to see the other types of visas that New Zealand offers:
We have a handy comparison table in our previous post, Working Holiday visa for New Zealand .
Explore this post:
Types of visitor visa new zealand.
To put it simply, this visa will allow you to travel in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months . You can visit friends, go for a sports event, etc.
And you can even study for a total of 3 months.
But there should absolutely be no working on your part – not for food, money or accommodation.
There are 2 types of Visitor Visa in New Zealand:
As of 1 October, 2019 anyone from the 60 waiver countries listed will now have to pay for an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. That includes Malaysia! More details below under requirements for a visitor visa to New Zealand.
The maximum number of months you can stay in New Zealand with this visa is 3 months for non-UK citizens. UK citizens get to stay up to 6 months with this visa.
You don’t need any documentation except your passport and a return ticket for this visa when you arrive at the immigration in New Zealand.
And if all goes well, you should get a stamp in your passport from the respective officer.
For this visa, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you fill out your arrival card as honestly as possible.
But this blog post is mainly focusing on the other type of visitor visa:
This visa cost me $165 NZD back in 2018 and lets you stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months.
Note: As of 17th May 2022, the cost of applying for the visitor visa increased to $246.
Provided that you have not already exceeded a total of 9 months’ stay in New Zealand in an 18 month period.
In contrast to the previous Visitor Visa (Country Waiver):
You need all sorts of paperwork as evidence that you will be a genuine visitor.
Don’t put this off to the last minute because it really does take the immigration office a long time to process applications for the Visitor Visa.
For your reference, I submitted my application in May 21, 2018 and got the Visa in June 13, 2018 – a total of 18 working days.
Nzeta and ivl for visa waiver travellers.
What is this the NZeTA?
All would-be visitors (including transit) to New Zealand must check if they need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before going to New Zealand.
Besides this NZeTA, you may have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) too.
Who’s applicable?
Who’s not applicable for the NZeTa?
How do I apply for the NZeTa?
There are 2 methods:
When to apply for the NZeTa:
It takes up to 72 hours for your NZeTA to be approved so do so way before your trip to avoid being barred from boarding the plane!
How much will application cost?
The cost of the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) will be NZD $35 and will be charged together in the same transaction as your NZeTA:
If you apply online , it will be NZD $12 + NZD $35 = NZD $47
And if you apply through their app , it will be NZD $9 + NZD $35 = NZD $44
How long are my NZeTA and IVL valid for?
They are valid for multiple visits and up to a maximum of 2 years .
You also need these:
These are the things you have to upload together with your online application on the official New Zealand immigration website:
Tip: The client number is not the visa waiver stamp number on your passport in case you are wondering. You can leave this blank unless you do have one from a previous application.
It cost me $25 NZD to get it done at the post office in a small town in New Zealand. Check out the passport photo do’s and don’t’s on the official website first !
**Alternatively, you just need to show that you have:
To start with, a bona fide can be a cover letter that explains your background and purpose of visiting the country that you wish to apply for.
It may also include your future plans after your intended time in the country you visit. And that is the case if you want to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa.
The bona fide should serve to clear any doubts the immigration may have on your true intentions:
You can therefore also explain why you don’t intend to permanently immigrate to New Zealand. For example, proof of a steady business in your home country. Or several properties that you own and manage in your own country.
Another important reason for a bonafide is to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (without having to work there), and be able to fly out of the country on the designated date.
New Zealand immigration requires a black and white softcopy of such a document.
You can upload it online together with the other documents listed above. After making a RealMe account (an easy and straightforward process in itself).
Use the bona fide letter to tie all your evidence together (not literally, of course!).
When I wrote my own bona fide, I wasn’t sure whether it would even be approved or not. There were no templates to follow and the instructions on the official New Zealand immigration site were very general.
Move on to the next section in this post if you want to know how to write your own bona fide cover letter.
PS: We don’t offer bona fide cover letter services. I’ve gotten a few requests which I declined.
Disclaimer – Using this template or following the guidelines below will not guarantee your success in obtaining a visa (from whichever country you are trying to apply for) by using this template. I’m just sharing what worked for me back in 2018 when I successfully applied and obtained an extended visitor visa (with just one application) to stay longer in New Zealand with my then-boyfriend who had a NZ Working Holiday Visa.
You can use this as a base template for your own bona fide.
Want more details?
I based the following guidelines on what I could piece together from various sources online.
Tip: Please make sure to include how long you want to stay (an exact date would be best). Do not take for granted that they will grant you 9 months – they won’t . Ask for multiple entry as well.
Besides all of the above, I added more details on our travel plans (by month) in New Zealand as well as our current New Zealand address and phone number. I even put our camper car’s license plate number and my boyfriend’s New Zealand working history.
If you need to leave New Zealand and re-enter again during your holiday duration in New Zealand, please request for it.
Explain why you would need a multiple-entry Visa . Put down the exact date you plan to leave New Zealand (i.e. the last day of your holiday) if you can too. They will not grant you 9 months by default.
At the very end of my bona fide cover letter, I shared my future travel plans after New Zealand to emphasize that I would not be migrating to New Zealand in the future.
My last point was to drop my email address and ask them to contact me if there were any questions (They didn’t have any questions though).
After writing your letter, covert it into a pdf and upload it together with the other documents.
As of May 2022, visa application processing for the Visitor Visa can take anywhere between 44 days to 5 months. Check here for the latest update .
Back in 2018, it was 21 days and if successful, you should get an email from the New Zealand immigration that contains your client number and your visitor visa. The expiry date will be clearly stated too.
Moreover, if you did request for multiple-entry and the request got through, it will be stated there too. Good luck in your application!
Let’s say you need to change your visa conditions to multiple-entry. Or, you want to extend further.
Here are some things to consider:
Before you go through all the effort of extending your current visitor visa, consider the possibility of flying out of New Zealand before the end of your visa and coming back with the visitor waiver visa.
For example, if your visitor visa happens to end on Jan 1, 2019. You could fly out of New Zealand and come back with the visitor visa (waiver country) then.
But what if you’ve already used the visitor visa (waiver) before?
According to the immigration officer I called, my visitor waiver visa record (I previously used 2 of 3 allowed months) reset when I obtained the longer visitor visa.
In fact, he said as long as I leave the country before Jan 1, 2019, I could come back in using my refreshed visitor waiver visa (i.e. another 3 months).
Don’t forget:
The same conditions still apply for the visitor waiver visa – e.g. return ticket out of New Zealand and proof of sufficient funds during your visit to New Zealand
Or you could try your luck with the Working Holiday visa (if you were never successfully granted one before and you are still less than 31 years old.
If you already have one and it’s time to extend it, do check out our post about how to extend your New Zealand working holiday visa (and some conditions to meet) .
The immigration office will unfortunately not state the reason for your application getting rejected.
So to answer this question, think back on what you wrote in your bona fide. Did you give them reason to suspect your real intentions of going to New Zealand?
Here are some possible reasons why your bona fide was rejected based on what is listed on the NZ immigration official website (and also my own thoughts on the matter):
When they say lawful purposes, they mean any of the following – you are going to New Zealand simply for a holidaying or sightseeing, to visit friends and relatives, training or studying in New Zealand for 3 months or less, for your wedding or a business consultation, or to participate in an amateur sports event.
Other reasons they may accept include getting medical treatment in New Zealand. Or if you have a personal invitation from the the NZ government.
Whatever, the reason, you are NOT ALLOWED to work in New Zealand during the duration of your stay if you are holding a Visitor Visa.
Note: Applicable to both Visa Waiver Visitor Visa and Visitor Visa
Furthermore, if you’re travelling with a partner, you have to prove your relationship (a screenshot of your chat history is not good enough) and they must have a clear record too (e.g. following their visa conditions, no previous visa rejections or criminal records, etc).
By now, you should at least know how to get started on your New Zealand bona fide – that pesky (but unfortunately crucial) letter that stands between you and a visitor visa.
Don’t forget to specify exactly when you want the visa to end (no more than 9 months in a 12 month period). Or else, the immigration office will do it for you and they will put the bare minimum (the date of your flight).
We really recommend you to call the NZ immigration office yourself before your trip as they have the latest information on visas. It takes a while to get through to the office so list down all your questions first!

Hi, what about a group visa? As a group leader do I to provide all my member with each individual Bona Fide letter or can I simply write one for all. Thanks
Hello Anon, Thanks for your question.
Applying by group just needs one bona fide letter, I believe.
By the way, I have also asked the immigration office before, you still have to pay the application fee per head either way. In case you were thinking it might save some money.
Hope that helps. Thanks.

Looks like you can submit one cover letter (bona fide) for your whole group.
please can your share us the proper written bonafide of yours.
Hi Param, for personal reasons, I won’t share my bonafide. However, I have already shared the format to be used as a template on my post. Just let them have proof that you don’t intend to secretly move to New Zealand or set up a business. Show that you have good reasons to go back to your country after your trip. Share your past trip history (with visa numbers if you have any), I wrote many other tips on my blog. Do read through, thanks!
Hi, my parents applied for a visitors visa with all supporting documents but have declined stating whether or not the applicant for temporary entry or entry permission is a bona fide applicant. What can be done? i shall apply again but what more documents should i put since they are retired. I
There may be many reasons for a rejection of a bona fide: 1. Supporting documents are not official or don’t look authentic 2. No clear travel plan provided – it must be very clear that your parents are only there for a holiday
If you need more help, I have already shared the format of my Bona fide in the post, to be used as a template. Basically, just let them have solid proof that you don’t intend to secretly move to New Zealand or set up a business. Show that you have good reasons to go back to your country after your trip. Hi dear, I am applying visit visa to New Zealand please guide me which documents i need .please share with me Bona fide format.i am living in saudi arabia from last 10 years and working in telecom job.plz advice
Thanks Ashfaq Ahmad
Hello Ashfaq, the format is already on the blog post. Thanks.
Thank you so much for this blog. I am a Kiwi and my boyfriend is Indonesian. Our first visa application got denied due to lack of evidence, which was so frustrating. This blog really helped us understand the bona fide aspect and provide more information. Thankfully, we got a 2-month visa on the second try and are in NZ now, the first time I have seen my family in three years!
Hi Carly, I’m glad our article helped you! You and your family take care <3
Hi . Thank you for your info. It would be wonderfull if you could guide me for a visitor visa to visit my fiance who has a resident visa in NZ. During covid-19 outbreak no visitor visa is processing . And we are really frustrated
Hi Noosh, thanks for your inquiry. However, we’re really out of touch with the current Visitor VISA process. Since it’s been 2 years since we applied for it. We would recommend that you call the NZ Immigration office instead. Thanks and wish you the best of luck in getting the VISA!

Tips on providing information to an audience that is new to new zealand.
Download the PDF of this content PDF 3MB
People from different cultures may prefer their information organised and presented in different ways. We must provide information that migrants can clearly understand and act upon.
A quarter of New Zealand's population was born overseas. Those new to New Zealand need clear information but they can find it challenging to understand the way New Zealanders communicate.
It can also be just as challenging for those of us who produce and write that information. So what works best for your newcomer audience may also work well for a broader audience too.
In putting together information for migrants we want to ensure it is informative, interesting and clear.
Many newcomers to New Zealand are English speakers, from countries such as Great Britain, South Africa, the USA and Ireland. But the fastest growing groups come from countries that are not predominantly English speaking, such as China, Argentina and the Philippines.
In any case we must provide information that migrants can clearly understand and act upon.
Even if a new migrant understands a bit of English or speaks it well – including as a first language – Kiwi English is often different from the English they know.
So it is helpful to remind ourselves of some tips by using this resource when communicating with newcomers.
Tips such as keeping messages short and simple. Using active language. Avoiding Kiwi expressions, idioms and metaphors.
Design is important too. Use easy-to-read fonts, lots of white space and clear images. ‘Keeping it Clear’ can help your communication with new to New Zealand audiences.
This is a good rule for all writing, but it is even more important for an audience that is new to New Zealand. If the critical information is not the first thing they read, they may stop reading before they get to it.
If it is not crucial to your meaning, do not include it. Write about the facts that your audience need to know; extra information may confuse the reader.
Actually, the OECD has some very nice things to say about our educational system, calling us ‘a top-performing country in terms of the quality of its educational system’.
The OECD refers to New Zealand as ‘a top-performing country in terms of the quality of its educational system’.
Avoid long sentences. Check any sentence with more than 20 words to see if you can split it to make it easier to read. Sentences should be short and to the point. Try to express only one idea in each sentence. Try to avoid words that add little meaning to your sentence.
When you use a longer word, some readers may skip to the shorter words that follow it. If this happens, your reader might miss important information.
Tax is one of those inescapable facts of life, even in New Zealand, but at least the experts here have developed a tax system that’s comparatively easy to navigate.
Tax is a fact of life, even in New Zealand. But the experts here have developed a tax system that is easy to understand.
Redundancies repeat what you are already saying. They can add another level of complexity for those new to New Zealand who may have to unnecessarily translate both words. Avoid them to simplify your writing.
A little forward planning and preparation will save a lot of time, frustration and stress in your job hunt.
Planning will save you a lot of time in your job search.
Try to use the same term consistently for a specific thought, concept or object. Using different terms can confuse your reader and may lead them to misinterpret your information.
There are several tools you could use, and choosing the right implement is important, so check first to make sure you have the correct equipment.
There is more than one tool you could use, and using the best one is important. Check first to make sure you have the right tool.
Try to not complicate matters by using jargon that your new to New Zealand audience will not understand. If you really need to use a technical term you can, but remember to explain what you mean the first time you use it.
Occasionally in English we include two negatives to make a statement more subtle. For those who do not have English as a first language, a double negative can make a sentence even more difficult to understand.
The situation is not uncomplicated.
The situation is complicated.
Contractions (such as it’s, you’re, it’ll, they’re) may confuse those whose first language is not English. They can hide what is being contracted. It is best to write in full.
A lot of English words have multiple meanings. Think hard about whether a word you are using has another commonly used definition. If it does, consider an alternative, or make it clear which definition you mean.
That is the natural choice.
When you write for those new to English it is best to use the active voice. It is simpler, clearer and more concise than the passive voice.
In fact, many other languages do not use the passive voice. Online translators, which migrants often use, also cope better with active writing.
While passive voice is useful in some situations, it can make the reader feel at a distance from the information. Passive voice is impersonal and it can cause the new reader of English not to take action.
The process takes up to 35 working days to complete once all documents have been received.
When we receive all of your documents, the process takes up to 35 working days to complete.
Make a direct appeal when you give important information to get the reader involved or to get them to take action. A good way to do this is to use the pronoun ‘you’ when referring to your audience. Using ‘we’ to refer to your organisation also makes you more approachable.
When you use pronouns in your writing it enables your audience to picture themselves in the information. Direct writing means that newcomers are more likely to understand and act on their responsibilities.
Direct writing helps you to carefully analyse what you want the reader to do. It makes it easier to put information in a logical order, answer questions and clearly assign responsibilities and requirements to your audience.
After an application form is received, it will be processed and returned within 10 working days. Please make sure to include a return address.
After we receive your application form, we will process it and send it back to you within 10 working days. Please make sure you include a return address.
Address your audience as an individual, not as a group. This will help you to avoid confusing plurals and gender references like ‘she’ or ‘he’.
Individuals who have been offered a place in an approved exchange scheme can apply for a student visa for the duration of his or her exchange.
If you have a place in an approved exchange scheme, you can apply for a student visa for the duration of your exchange.
You do not need to be an entertainer when providing information. Humour does not transfer easily across cultures. Your idea of humour could even offend your audience. This does not mean that your writing has to be dry and boring; if it is informative, interesting and relevant, you will hold the reader’s attention.
Those new to New Zealand learn better from other people’s stories and experiences, rather than from abstract advice or instruction. If you can, find a relevant case study to help you put a relatable human face on your information. Your migrant audience will feel more connected to your information by picturing themselves in the situations you present.
Those new to New Zealand can have difficulty understanding phrases and expressions that are unique to New Zealand English.
Māori words and phrases are a common part of New Zealand English. It is likely that most newcomers will not know what they mean. If you use a Māori word or phrase, remember to give an English translation or include a glossary.
After the pōwhiri, we will head back to the office for some kai.
After the pōwhiri (welcome ceremony), we will go back to the office for some kai (food).
While it is tempting to introduce newcomers to some of our Kiwi words, this will make your information less clear for your migrant audience.
Keeping things simple means you need to try to eliminate Kiwi slang or colloquialisms. Check for words, phrases and expressions that may confuse newcomers.
In New Zealand workplaces, small talk with workmates in the smoko room is an important way of establishing and maintaining good team relationships.
In New Zealand workplaces, talking to your workmates during breaks is an important way for you to get to know your team.
Summer in New Zealand means going to the bach , having a barbie , and wearing shorts and jandals . But it is important to remember that in New Zealand our strong sun means that you need to be careful. If you are spending time outside this summer, make sure to use sun protection. Wear sunnies , rub on SPF 30+ sunscreen and put on a long-sleeved shirt. You can also get dehydrated, so if you go to the beach or on a long car trip it is a good idea to bring along drinks, and maybe a chilly bin , because you might not see a dairy on the way. Enjoy yourself and remember to be 'sun smart'.
Idioms are so commonly used that we are often unaware they are idioms at all. After all, there are over 25,000 idioms in the English language. Many relate to our culture, meaning that they may not translate well across other cultures or languages. This means that migrants can find some idioms difficult to understand.
It is a good idea to get someone else to check your writing for idioms. If you have a migrant in your organisation they would be best suited for this.
Here are some examples of job interview questions containing idioms. Think about how confusing these phrases may be for those from other cultures.
Have you ever got off on the wrong foot with someone?
Have you ever started a relationship badly with someone?
Can you tell me about a time when you had to throw in the towel because you couldn’t achieve something?
Can you tell me about a time when you had to quit because you couldn't achieve something?
In English, metaphor is very common and can be much less visible than idiom. It is important to be aware of this when writing for newcomers because they may struggle with understanding them. This is because the meaning of metaphors is not always obvious.
If a word has another more literal meaning than the sense you are using it in, then it is most likely a metaphor.
The project has a lot of obstacles in its way.
The project will have many difficulties.
The situation is looking up.
The situation is improving.
She fought hard to get that result.
She worked hard to get that result.
Clichés are phrases or expressions that are overused. Idioms and metaphors can also be clichés. It is best for you to avoid these entirely.
At the end of the day, this problem has been dealt with. If it happens again I think it’s best to turn the other cheek. Still, every cloud has a silver lining!
We have dealt with the problem. If it happens again, I think it is best to ignore it. We have learned something from this experience.

No matter how clean and clear your writing style, if the typography is messy and cramped it will be difficult for a migrant audience to understand your message.
These days, many of us do our own basic design work rather than sending it to an expert. So it is worth knowing a few important design tips:
Keep a good amount of space around text and in margins. Also put white space around images, graphics and lines or columns of type. This reduces visual noise by separating information. Your migrant audience can find solid blocks of text intimidating.
Optimal line spacing is between 120% and 145% of point size, so 10pt text should have a line spacing of between 12 and 14.5pt.
Using pictures and diagrams to illustrate important points will help to make your information clearer to your audience.
They also break up the text and can provide readers with information in a way that may be more familiar or accessible.
Make sure your chosen image has no chance of giving the wrong impression or offending your migrant audience. Have a number of colleagues check the image and its cultural appropriateness before publishing it.
New readers of English can tire easily with lots of text on a page. Headings break up text to make it easier to read. They can also add meaning to each new section. Headings can be effective when posed as questions or as short, direct and active sentences.
Put some white space around them to increase their visibility. Headings should provide full context while still being short.
Including checklists and bullet points can help improve the clarity of your information. But too many lists can be tedious to read.
If you plan to use lists, it is important that you use short, simple and complete sentences.
Only use lists for information that would benefit from being presented in this way; for example, a series of steps, a checklist or a list of things to remember.
Write these out in full, rather than day/month/year (20/01/16). Some countries order the days and months differently. The clearest way to write a date is ‘Monday, 20 January 2016’.
People read differently on a screen from how they read on paper. They tend to scan a web page in an F shape, reading horizontally a couple of times, then down the left-hand side.
When you write for a new to New Zealand audience on the web it is even more important that your first two paragraphs contain your most important information. Start each subheading or paragraph with key words that your audience will notice when scanning down the left side.
Avoid lengthy pages as most people will not read to the bottom. If you have a lot of information, use hyperlinks to help readers jump to the sections they are interested in.
A well-crafted support letter can be a powerful tool in demonstrating that the relationship is genuine. This guide will walk you through the key elements that you will need to think about when writing such a letter. If you still have questions, contact Immigration Lawyer NZ .
Relationship support letters play a crucial role in the immigration process for New Zealand, especially for spouse visa applications. They can also be used to support a general visitor visa application if the partner is coming from a non-visa-waiver country and lacks eligibility for a partner visa. These letters come in two main types:
We recommend the relationship letter be written individually, i.e. one from the applicant and one from the partner providing sponsorship, but if it is too much work, writing and signing one letter jointly will suffice.
When assessing these letters, case officers focus on the narrative flow and the chronological context it provides. They aim to understand how the relationship initially started, evolved, and reached significant steps such as engagement, moving in together, or marriage. This perspective allows them to gauge the genuine commitment shared between the partners.
The purpose of the letters cannot be overstated. While supporting documents like passports, certificates, and photographs are essential, they often lack the depth needed to truly understand the lives and emotions of the applicant and their partner. These letters offer a unique opportunity to provide richness and genuineness to your story, allowing the case officer to gain more insight into your relationship and ultimately enhancing your application's credibility.
Here are some of the main points we advise our clients to include in writing this letter in support. Depending on your preferred approach, you may choose to present these points as separate sections within your letter or integrate them as sub-topics within the timeline of your relationship, whichever method aligns more logically and flows naturally with your unique situation.
The history should cover when you first met up to the present time, as well as future plans. Explain your relationship in chronological order so that the department of immigration can observe the progression. Please always make sure to include relevant details such as specific dates, locations, and the names of those involved to provide a comprehensive account of your relationship.
Be sure to include important stepping stones and events such as your first date, any noteworthy celebrations like birthdays or anniversaries, making the decision to get married, and instances of travelling together or embarking on adventures. Mention the date of moving in and the address, as this is one of the most crucial milestones in a partnership visa application.
One of the primary objectives of your letter in support is to convince the immigration officer regarding the enduring, committed, and exclusive nature of your relationship. Put emphasis that your relationship is authentic, that you have weathered challenges and are looking forward to spending the rest of your lives together.
Beyond presenting a factual account of your relationship, take the opportunity to bring out your personal perspectives. Discuss how you both perceive your relationship, your feelings towards it, to each other and the direction in which you see it heading. Express your genuine emotions and the depth of your commitment. You can talk about experiences that have deeply touched you as a couple and solidified the bond.
It's important to acknowledge that no relationship is without its challenges, including occasional disagreements or setbacks. Some immigration officers may question the authenticity of your relationship, which appears to have no issues.
If you wanted to address this, you could briefly mention that, like any couple, you have faced challenges and disagreements from time to time. However, emphasise how you have worked through these issues maturely and with a shared commitment to strengthening your partnership.
If the relationship was affected by factors outside of your control, for example, maintaining a long-distance relationship, travel restrictions and separation due to COVID-19, mention how your unwavering commitment to each other made it possible to overcome and keep your relationship thriving, even when circumstances made it difficult.
Within your letter, it's essential to underline the recognition and support your relationship receives from friends and family members. Explain how they are not only aware of your partnership but also endorse and encourage it. This can be a solid testament to the legitimacy of your relationship and the valuable network of support you have built around it.
In some cultures, societal norms or legal constraints may make it challenging for individuals in same-sex or LGBTQ relationships to disclose their partnerships openly. It's important to clarify within your letter that, due to cultural factors, you may not have openly shared your relationship status with a broader audience.
Likewise, premarital "living together" arrangements are forbidden due to cultural values, and you may have chosen not to disclose it to your family and friends. You will need to provide the relevant context while highlighting to the immigration officer that your relationship is genuine and committed regardless (with suitable supporting evidence).
It's important to understand that open marriages, open relationships, or polygamous relationships will not be approved. Immigration authorities look at exclusivity as one of the key factors when assessing whether a couple's relationship is genuine. Even if you genuinely believe that the relationship works for the parties involved, Immigration New Zealand will not consider it to be a committed relationship.
Consider your individual circumstances when deciding which points to include in your letter. There's no need to disclose everything; the point is to write a compelling letter of support for the purpose of a spousal sponsorship application. Instead, focus on highlighting your strengths rather than dwelling on weaknesses.
Obtaining letters from friends or family can be a pivotal aspect when applying for a visa to New Zealand. These letters serve as endorsements of your relationship and can significantly contribute to a positive outcome for your application. These individuals should not only understand your relationship with your partner but also have known the couple for a considerable duration to give their story more weight.
The letters aim to provide immigration officials with an external perspective on your relationship. Your friends or family members, who are aware of the relationship and how long they have known you and your partner, can attest to the authenticity of your bond. Their letters allow Immigration NZ to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of your relationship, improving the credibility of your application.
When asking your friends or family to write a letter of support, encourage them to include their contact information and their relationship with your partner (e.g. went to school together, work colleague, etc). Highlight that the letter should emphasise positive aspects of your relationship, such as when you decided to get married, how long they have known you as a couple, or when they've been to the place where you are currently living together.
The letters will act as an additional layer of relationship documents, which will strengthen your case and increase the chances of a successful immigration application to INZ.

Simon, All we put in ours was our application number, contact details and a short explanation as to the contents - we did ours with bullet points. Don't forget that they dont like paper clips, plastic wallets or anything like that. Good luck
Oops, we didn't even do a cover letter for the work permit application I just sent for my husband. I just thought it was likely to be all pretty self-explanatory and didn't think about it. Kerri
We did the same sort of thing with bullet points that listed everything that was included, application form, police certificates, relationship evidence, etc. etc. etc. We also did a small paragraph indicating why we want to immigrate to NZ- we figured a bit of personal stuff wouldn't hurt. Plus a little blurb about OH's possible career opportunities (we are submitting with no job offer).
