Addition Worksheets

Welcome to the addition worksheets page at Math-Drills.com where we will add to your learning experience in many positive ways! On this page, you will find Addition worksheets from addition facts and two-digit addition to column addition and addition with games. In the first section, we've included a few addition printables that should help out the beginning student. Teaching addition facts is best done with some interesting teaching strategies.

Some teachers and parents use addition manipulatives to help students understand the basic addition facts. For example, adding groups of "Apple Jacks" (a breakfast cereal) by counting will quickly lead students to understand the concepts of addition. The sooner you can introduce base ten blocks to your students, the better. If you haven't already used them for counting, use them for basic addition and show students how regrouping works.

Addition Facts Tables

maths addition and subtraction homework

Disputably not a great way to learn addition facts, but undeniably a great way to summarize, addition facts tables are an invaluable resource in any home or school classroom. Addition works very well as a table since the addends can be sequential. Encourage students to look for patterns and teach them a variety of strategies to learn the addition facts. For students who have not yet memorized their addition facts but need to know them for a more advanced math lesson such as adding two-digit numbers, provide an addition facts table to them, so they can quickly look up addition facts. After a while, they will most likely learn the facts through the use of the table and become less reliant on it. To make the tables more durable, print them on card stock and laminate them. They can be displayed on a screen or enlarged and printed on poster paper for whole class use.

Five Minute Addition Frenzies

maths addition and subtraction homework

Five minute frenzy charts are 10 by 10 grids for addition fact practice. In each square, students write the sum of the column number and the row number.

Called mad minutes or timed drills by some, five minute frenzies are meant to be timed to add a little more excitement to practicing addition facts. They are ideally used to increase a student's ability to recall addition facts quickly which has all sorts of benefits later in their school life including preventing high school teachers from complaining about "how their students can't even add single-digit numbers without using a calculator."

A general goal to achieve would be to complete one chart in less than five minutes and score 98 percent or better, however, we recommend setting personal goals for students based on an initial test. If they are banging their head against the wall after a couple of minutes with only a few questions done, they really shouldn't be completing a timed addition facts drill at the moment. They still have some learning to do. We would recommend breaking out the manipulatives at this point. If they blast through the questions in 1.5 minutes and get almost all of them correct, they are probably ready for something a little more challenging.

One-per-page addition frenzies are not the most efficient use of paper resources, but they are a good starting point especially for younger students who have not quite mastered their penmanship enough to fit their numbers into a smaller chart. They are also great for displaying on screens or monitors for group activities. For example, you might use an interactive white board to fill out the chart.

Single-Digit Addition

maths addition and subtraction homework

Most people would agree that being able to add single-digit numbers quickly and in your head is an essential skill for success in math. The various addition worksheets in this section focus on skills that students will use their entire life. These worksheets will not magically make a student learn addition, but they are valuable for reinforcement and practice and can also be used as assessment tools.

The make ten addition strategy involves "spliting" the second addend into two parts. The first part combines with the first addend to make ten and the second part is the leftover amount. The strategy helps students quickly add amounts over ten in their head. For example, adding 8 + 7, students first recognize that they need to add 2 to 8 to get 10, so they split the 7 into 2 + 5. The 8 + 2 makes 10 and 5 more makes 15. The skill can be extended to many situations, for example adding 24 + 9, students recognize that they need 6 more to get to 30 and 9 can be split into 6 + 3, so 24 + 6 = 30 and 3 more makes 33. Continuing on, students can work on recognizing "complements" of other important numbers (see section further down) to develop this strategy further.

Focusing on one number at a time is necessary for some students. Maybe they get overwhelmed with too much information and need to experience success in small steps.

Multi-Digit Addition

maths addition and subtraction homework

A variety of strategies can be used to learn multi-digit addition; it isn't necessary to rely only on paper and pencil methods. Base ten blocks can help students conceptualize addition. Teaching students a mental left-to-right addition skill will help them in future math studies and life in general. E.g. 34 + 78 would be 30 + 70 = 100, 100 + 4 = 104, 104 + 8 = 112. Don't forget about using estimation with these worksheets.

Horizontal addition can encourage students to use mental math or other strategies to add numbers. One of the most common mental math strategies for addition is a left-to-right (also called front end) addition strategy. This involves adding the greater place values first. Other strategies for adding multi-digit numbers include using base ten blocks or other manipulatives, number lines, decomposing numbers and adding the parts, and using a calculator.

Multi-Digit Addition with Grid Support

maths addition and subtraction homework

Adding with grid support helps students who have trouble lining up place values themselves. Perhaps with a little practice, they might get a better understanding of not only lining up the place values, but why this is done. Pointing out that the 5 in 659 means 50, for example, is useful in helping students understand place value as it relates to addition.

Various Other Addition Worksheets

maths addition and subtraction homework

Column addition is not just an exercise in accounting, it also develops mental addition skills that are useful in everyday life. Various strategies are available for adding columns of numbers. The traditional method is to use a pencil and paper approach, also known as right-to-left addition, where students add and regroup starting with the smallest place (ones in this case) and proceed up to the greatest place. A mental approach might involve students going from left-to-right where the greater place is added first. This is easier to keep track of in your head, but does require the occasional adjustment in previous answers. An example is to add 345 + 678 + 901. First add the 300, 600 and 900 to get 1800, then add 40, 70 and 0 in turn to get 1910, then deal with the 5, 8 and 1 to get 1924. Along the way you had to adjust your total, but keeping a running total in your head is a lot easier than transfering a pencil and paper method into your head.

Using an adding doubles strategy can help students to process addition questions more quickly using mental math. To use this strategy, students must recognize that the two numbers are close to the same value (usually by one or two). They also must recognize by how much and whether it is greater or less than the first addend. A typical dialogue with the question, 15 + 16, might be, "I see that the second number is greater than the first number by 1. If I double the first number and add 1, I will get my answer. 15 doubled is 30 plus one is 31. 15 + 16, therefore, is 31."

  • Adding Doubles Up to 9 Adding Doubles (Up to 9) Adding Doubles Plus One (Up to 9) Adding Doubles Plus Two (Up to 9) Adding Doubles Minus One (Up to 9) Adding Doubles Minus Two (Up to 9) Adding Doubles Mixed Variations (Up to 9)
  • Adding Doubles Up to 15 Adding Doubles (Up to 15) Adding Doubles Plus One (Up to 15) Adding Doubles Plus Two (Up to 15) Adding Doubles Minus One (Up to 15) Adding Doubles Minus Two (Up to 15) Adding Doubles Mixed Variations (Up to 15)
  • Adding Doubles Up to 30 Adding Doubles (Up to 30) Adding Doubles Plus One (Up to 30) Adding Doubles Plus Two (Up to 30) Adding Doubles Minus One (Up to 30) Adding Doubles Minus Two (Up to 30) Adding Doubles Mixed Variations (Up to 30)

Not commonly taught in modern schools, adding in other base number systems can stretch students' minds and have quite a few important applications, especially in technology. For example, you will find binary, octal and hexadecimal systems are quite often used in computer technology. Quaternary numbers can be used in genetics to store DNA sequences. The duodecimal system is sometimes suggested as a superior system to the decimal system

  • Adding in Other Base Number Systems Adding Binary Numbers (Base 2) Adding Ternary Numbers (Base 3) Adding Quaternary Numbers (Base 4) Adding Quinary Numbers (Base 5) Adding Senary Numbers (Base 6) Adding Octal Numbers (Base 8) Adding Duodecimal Numbers (Base 12) Adding Hexadecimal Numbers (Base 16) Adding Vigesimal Numbers (Base 20) Adding Hexatrigesimal Numbers (Base 36) Adding Various Numbers (Various Bases)

Home, Sweet Home: Additional Ways to Practice Addition Are Under Your Roof

  • For a new twist on the traditional card game “war,” remove all the 10s and face cards, and split the remaining cards into two equal stacks. After you each turn over a card, have your child mentally add the two numbers. If she gets the correct answer within a certain time limit (say, 10 seconds), she gets to keep the cards. If not, you get to the keep the cards.
  • Next time the family socks come out of the dryer, place them in piles based on color. Have your child first estimate how many socks are in each pile, then add those numbers. Then let him count the socks in each pile and add those numbers. Finally, ask him if he can subtract the smaller number from larger number and give you the correct answer.
  • Lastly, your kitchen is loaded with items that can quickly be turned into addition problems, from fruit, cereal, and chips to pasta, eggs, and slices of bread.

The Order of Operations in Math — A Complete & Kid-Friendly Guide

maths addition and subtraction homework

Whether you're getting ready for an exam or simply want to refresh your knowledge of the order of operations in math, we've created a comprehensive and easy-to-follow guide for you.

Read on to find simple definitions of the order of operations and related terms, practical examples, and a fun quiz to test your knowledge.

What Is the Order of Operations?

Have you ever tried to solve a math problem, where you didn't know where to start or what to do next?

For example, when you see 3 + 8 × 2 - 6, what should you do first?

  • Add 3 and 8
  • Multiply 8 and 2
  • Subtract 6 from 2

The order of operations is a set of rules that tells us what math operation to do first in an expression with multiple operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Following the order of operations, when solving 3 + 8 × 2 - 6, we would first do the:

  • Multiplication: 8 x 2 = 16, so we get 3 + 16 – 6.
  • Addition: 3 + 16 = 19, so we get 19 – 6.
  • Subtraction: 19 – 6 = 13.

3 + 8 × 2 – 6 = 13

One way to remember the order of operations is by the acronym PEMDAS.

Watch our video to learn more.

What Does “PEMDAS” Mean?

PEMDAS is an acronym that reminds us of the sequence of steps to follow when solving mathematical expressions with multiple operations.

  • P  stands for Parentheses (sometimes called Brackets).
  • E  stands for Exponents (sometimes called Indices).
  • M stands for Multiplication.
  • D  stands for Division.
  • A stands for Addition.
  • S  stands for Subtraction.

Much like grammatical rules that govern how we build sentences, PEMDAS is a set of rules mathematicians came up with and agree to follow so that we can have consistency and clarity when performing calculations.

maths addition and subtraction homework

Different countries have their own ways of remembering the order of math operations.

  • In Canada, it's called BEDMAS : Brackets, Exponents, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction.
  • Some prefer BODMAS : Brackets, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, and Subtraction.
  • Then there's GEMDAS : Grouping, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and Subtraction.

When solving math expressions with multiple operations, we follow these steps from left to right .

There is a fun way of remembering the PEMDAS rule with the left to right rule using a playful mnemonic:

“ lease xcuse y ear unt ally and et her est”

arentheses, xponents, ( ultiplication, ivision), ( ddition, ubtraction) – from eft to ight

Now, let’s work through each step of PEMDAS.

1. Parentheses

The first step to the order of operations is parentheses. This means that when we’re solving an expression with multiple operations, we first solve the operations within parentheses (). Here’s a simple example to illustrate.

3 x (4 + 2)

  • First, we solve the expression within the parentheses: 4 + 2 =6, so we get 3 x 6.
  • Then, we multiply 3 by the result of the expression inside the parentheses (which, as we've seen, is 6): 3 x 6.
  • Finally, we get the answer 18.

Sometimes, math expressions contain a set of parentheses inside another set. To solve them, start by solving the operations inside the innermost parentheses , then work your way outward.

For example: {4 x [5 +(6 – 3)]} – (8 – 2)

  • First, we subtract numbers inside the innermost parentheses: 6 – 2 = 3, so we get {4 x [5 + 3]} – (8 – 2).
  • Then, add 5 to the answer inside the square brackets: 5 + 3 = 8, so we get {4 x 8} – (8 – 2).
  • Next, multiply the result by 4 inside the curly brackets: 4 x 8 = 32, so we get 32 — (8 – 2).
  • Now, solve the expression inside the parantheses: 8 – 2 = 6, so we get 32 – 6.
  • Finally, subtract the result of step 4 from the result of step 3: 32 – 6 = 26

2. Exponents

The second step in the order of operations is exponents. Exponents, also known as indices, show how many times a number is multiplied by itself.

To illustrate, 3⁴ is an exponent form that means multiply 3 by itself 4 times, or 3 x 3 x 3 x 3.

Let’s look at this example:

2 2 + 4 x 2

  • First, we look at the exponent 2 3 which means we multiply 2 by itself 3 times, or 2 × 2 × 2 = 8 , so we get: 8 + 4 × 2.
  • Then we multiply: 4 × 2 = 8 , so we get 8 + 8.
  • Finally, we add: 8 + 8 = 16.

Refresh Your Memory:  What Does Squared Mean in Math?

 3. Multiplication & Division

In the order of operations, multiplication and division are prioritized equally and are performed from left to right as they appear in the expression. This is why we consider them together as the third step in PEMDAS.

Let’s see that in practice with: 8 ÷ 2 × 4 + 3

  • First, we perform the division because it appears first, before the multiplication: 8 ÷ 2 = 4, so we get 4 x 4 + 3.
  • Then, we perform the multiplication: 4 x 4 = 16, so we get 16 + 3.
  • Next, we perform the addition: 16 + 3 = 19.
  • Finally, we get the result 19.

4. Addition & Subtraction

As the last steps of PEDMAS, we work on the addition and subtraction.

Just like multiplication and division, addition and subtraction are prioritized equally and are performed from left to right as they appear in the expression.

For example:

10 – 4 + 3

  • First, we subtract: 10 – 4 = 6, so we get 6 + 3
  • Then, we add: 6 + 3 = 9
  • Thus, the result is 9.

Now that we have covered each step of PEMDAS, let’s look at a more challenging example:

Common Mistakes with the Order of Operations in Math

PEMDAS makes solving math expressions much easier than simply memorizing the order of operations, but students sometimes forget the steps to take.

Here are some common mistakes to keep an eye on when solving math expressions with multiple operations:

1. Going Only Left to Right

Some students forget PEMDAS and just focus on the left-to-right approach, which might feel natural because of how we read.

It's important to remember that while going left to right can work, it's only suitable when you're solving expressions that only contain addition and subtraction, or multiplication and division.

For example, using the left to right approach works if you are trying to solve:

8 – 6 + 9 – 3

Or, if you are trying to solve:

8 ÷ 2 × 9 ÷ 3

But let's say you are trying to solve:

10 – 3 x 2 + 5 ÷ 5

As you can see, this expression contains subtraction, multiplication, addition, and division.

If we go from left to right – first subtracting 3 from 10 to get 7, then multiplying 7 by 2 to get 14, then adding 5 to it to get 19, and finally diving 19 by 5, we get 3.8 which is an incorrect result.

But if we follow PEMDAS, which tells us to start with multiplication and division (left to right) before we get to addition and subtraction, we get:

= 10 – 6 + 1

The correct answer is 5 .

2. Doing Addition Before Subtraction

Many students tend to do addition before subtraction in math problems because they learned addition before subtraction or because they're close together in the order of operations. Some also think that because A comes before S in PEMDAS you should always do addition before subtraction.

For instance, in the expression  8 – 2 + 3  you might tackle the addition before the subtraction and get: 8 –  5 = 3.

In the order of operations, addition and subtraction have the same priority which is why we have to use left-to-right approach and perform subtraction first:

= 6 + 3

3. Doing Multiplication Before Division

Similarly to addition vs. subtractions, students often think multiplication comes before division because that's what they've learned before or because they're used to seeing multiplication listed first in math problems. Another mistake is believing M comes before D in PEMDAS because you always do multiplication before division.

For example, in the expression 6 ÷ 2 × 3 = 6 ÷ 6 = 1 , a student might do the multiplication first and get a wrong result:

6 ÷ 2 × 3 = 6 ÷ 6 = 1

But we know by now that multiplication and division are equally important. So, we need to work from left to right and do the division first:

6 ÷ 2 × 3 = 3 × 3 = 9

Solved Examples for the Order of Operations

Using PEMDAS, let’s solve this one:

3 x (8 – 4) 2 + 6 ÷ 2

  • First, we do the subtraction inside the parentheses: 8 – 4 = 4, so we get 3 x 4 2  + 6 ÷ 2.
  • Next, we square the result: 4 2  = 16, so we get 3 x 16 + 6 ÷ 2.
  • Then, we multiply: 3 x 16 = 48, so we get 48 + 6 ÷ 2.
  • Next, we divide: 6 ÷ 2 = 3, so we get 48 + 3.
  • Finally, we add: 48 + 3 = 51.

Example 2

Let’s do the same for this expression:

3 x (7 – 2) + 6 ÷ 2

  • First, we do the subtraction inside the parentheses: 7 – 2 = 5, so we get 3 x 5 +  6 ÷ 2.
  • Next, we multiply: 3 x 5 = 15, so we get 15 +  6 ÷ 2.
  • Then, we divide: so we get 6 ÷ 2 = 3, so we get 15 + 3.
  • Finally, we add:15 + 3 = 18.

Finally, we can work on this one:

80  ÷ (6 + 7 x 2) – 5

  • First, we perform the multiplication inside the parentheses: 7 x 2 = 14, so we get 80 ÷ (6 + 14) – 5.
  • Next, we perform the addition inside the parentheses: 6 + 14 = 20, so we get 80 ÷ 20 – 5.
  • Then, we divide: 80 ÷ 20 = 4, so we get 4 – 5.
  • Finally, we subtract and get: 4 – 5 = –1.

Strike it Out

Strike it Out poster

Watch the video below which shows two people playing the first few turns of a game.

What do you notice? What do you want to ask?

If you can't access YouTube, here is a direct link to the video .

Watch the video a second time. Can you work out how to play the game?   What do you think the rules might be?  How might someone win the game?

If you are unable to view the video, you could click through this powerpoint presentation , which also demonstrates how to play. Alternatively, the rules of the game are hidden below.

  • Start by drawing a number line from 0 to 20 like this, or print off a sheet of number lines :

Strike it Out

  • The first player chooses two numbers on the line and crosses them out. Then they circle the sum or difference of the two numbers and they write down the calculation.

Strike it Out

  • The second player must start by crossing off the number that Player 1 has just circled. They then choose another number to cross out and then circle a third number which is the sum or difference of the two crossed-off numbers. Player 2 also writes down their calculation.

Strike it Out

  • Play continues in this way with each player starting with the number that has just been circled.
  • Once a number has been used in a calculation, it cannot be used again.
  • The game ends when one player cannot make a calculation. The other player is the winner.

It's your turn! Try playing the game against someone else a few times to get a feel for it. Do you have any good ways of winning?

Now it's time to work together with a partner, rather than against them. Try to create a string of calculations that uses as many numbers as possible on the 0-20 number line. Is it possible to create a string of number sentences that uses all the numbers on the 0-20 number line? Why or why not? How would you convince a mathematician?

Once you've had a good think about it, you may like to look at this proof that has been scrambled up. Can you rearrange it into its original order?

If you would prefer to work away from a screen, you could print off, cut up and rearrange  the statements . (This sheet includes three copies of each statement.)

What about the 1-20 number line?  Is it possible to create a string of number sentences that uses all the numbers on the 1-20 number line? Why or why not? How would you convince a mathematician?

Again, once you have thought about it, you may like to look at this proof that has been scrambled up. Can you rearrange it into its original order?

If you would prefer to work away from a screen, you could print off, cut up and rearrange the statements . (This sheet includes two copies of each statement.)

It's a good idea to play the game lots of times to start with to get the feel of it. You could keep the lines you use for each game and compare them afterwards.

Are there any numbers that you haven't crossed off in any of the games you've played on the 0-20 number line? Will it ever be possible to cross them off?

When you come to consider the 1-20 number line, have a think about the total number of numbers you use in a game.

Thank you to those of you who submitted comments about this game.

Anika from Holy Family Catholic Primary School in Boothstown, Manchester suggested the following rules:

  • The answer from the previous calculation should be the answer to the next one
  • You can only use each number once
  • Player A uses addition and Player B uses subtraction, and this pattern follows throughout the game
  • The aim of the game is to stop the other player from getting a calculation from the remaining numbers

Thank you, Anika! Jake said:

  • Player A does a calculation using numbers 0-20. They cross off the numbers they use but circle the answer.
  • Player B then uses the answer of player A's calculation to start their number sentence.
  • Each player can decide whether they would like to add or subtract.
  • The player who cannot make a calculation from the numbers remaining loses the game.

So, it seems that Anika and Jake were largely in agreement. Anika, it does look like the order of calculations goes addition, subtraction, addition, subtraction etc from what we see in the video, you're right. However, I would suggest that the order doesn't matter. (You can read our suggested rules by clicking on the 'Show' button underneath the video on the problem page itself .)

Eleanor from Cottenham Primary School told us:

Good ways to win are to try and use up the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4 and possibly 5 and 6, because you can get to many different numbers by adding those whereas with the larger numbers you cannot get to so many because you can only go up to the number 20.

Eleanor also went on to explore the cooperative challenges. She says:

We can't use all of the numbers because: For the number line going from 0 to 20, you cannot use zero as you wouldn't be adding or taking away anything so you would stay on the same number.

Yes, Eleanor, if you add zero, or take away zero, from a number, the answer to your calculation is the same number, so you would need to be able to use a number more than once and the rules don't allow this.

For the number line going from 1 to 20, you cannot use all the numbers because there will always be one number left over. Each new calculation uses two new numbers apart from the first calculation which uses three so if you keep adding two to three you will always be on odd numbers and 20 is an even number, not odd.

Thank you, Eleanor, what great reasoning. Can you follow Eleanor's argument?

Why play this game?

Possible approach, key questions, possible support, possible extension.

The possibilities are endless but do make sure they try out their new version of the game to check it is a 'good' game.
