Job Satisfaction

by Vince Tseng (Ballarat)

job satisfaction opinion essay

Your grammar and sentence structure needs a lot of improvement. The essay lacks cohesion, it's confusing and not progressive. Ideas are under developed or generalised, supporting statements are insufficient and confusing. Vocabulary is fine, but you need to improve your word selection.

Overall, this would be a band 6 essay at best, if not 5 or lower.

Model Answer:

job satisfaction opinion essay

There is no doubt that most adults spend the majority of their day at work. Thus, it is extremely important that their job is both rewarding and fulfilling. In this essay, I will examine factors related to job satisfaction and how realistic these factors are.

First of all, the most important reason that people work is for the money. A recent survey by a leading HR firm revealed that people working in a high paying job are 80%  happier than those who are not. However, job satisfaction is not only limited to financial reward. The office environment and the long term prospect of the career path are equally important. For example, people whose efforts  are not being appreciated by their company will not be enjoying what they are doing.  On the other hand, many people may be enjoying their job but the limited money that they earn might make  them unhappy with their profession. For example, many artists find it difficult to make a living even though they may feel lucky to be doing what they love.

So, in order to have a highly satisfied career, a person needs to be doing a job that they enjoy, working for a company with great environment, and getting paid for what they deserve. All these components are essential to achieving job satisfaction. Realistically, it is not easy for someone to have all that under the  same roof.

In conclusion, it is very difficult to get an ideal job that satisfies all the requirements of job satisfaction. However, everyone can still be happy with reporting to work everyday if  they are willing to make some sacrifices.

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer Essay: Job Satisfaction/Security (Real Past IELTS Exam/Test)

by Dave | Real Past Tests | 7 Comments

IELTS Writing Task 2 Sample Answer Essay: Job Satisfaction/Security (Real Past IELTS Exam/Test)

This is an IELTS writing task 2 sample answer essay from the real test related to job satisfactory and security.

It is a tricky question because both sides are tough to argue.

I did something interesting with my opinion as well that you can check out below.

Please consider signing up for my Patreon here in order to support my efforts and receive exclusive Ebooks and materials related to IELTS!

Before reading, listen to the audio below and take notes:

Some people argue that job satisfaction is more important than job security, while others believe that they cannot always expect job satisfaction and a permanent job is more important. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion. Real Past IELTS Exam/Test

Some make the pragmatic argument that in an uncertain job market, security ought to be valued over satisfaction. In my opinion, those with families cannot be reproached for this view but it is generally more important to enjoy your job and spread goodwill.

Workers with dependents rightly value a consistent paycheck and benefits over all other factors. If someone is just starting out in a labour of love such as becoming an artist, they may struggle initially to bring home enough money to make ends meet every month. They might not be able to send their children to good schools, live in a good neighborhood, and keep everyone in the house reasonably well clothed and fed. Even if they can manage that, it will place incredible mental stress on not only them but also their spouse and children. Research has shown these deeply ingrained anxieties from childhood can persist throughout adulthood.

It is nonetheless more important to pursue a job that is fulfilling. The vast majority of the world dislikes their job and a large percentage of these people have difficulty reconciling their frustrations with their day-to-day temperament. An unhappy employee is more likely to be short with co-workers, complain to friends, and resent their family for the burden they must shoulder for their welfare. More of this persons daily interactions will be negative and this adds up over years to create the greatest global repository of ill will. Free up the same person to enjoy their job and there is a strong chance they will suddenly brighten the days of those around them.

Overall, fomenting good humour is more important and only in very rare family situations should an individual persist in a job for its stability. Many recognise this once it is too late and they already have an expensive lifestyle to maintain or their best working years are behind them.

Word Count: 315

1. Some make the pragmatic argument that in an uncertain job market, security ought to be valued over satisfaction. 2. In my opinion, those with families cannot be reproached for this view but it is generally more important to enjoy your job and spread goodwill.

  • Paraphrase the overall topic of the essay for your first sentence.
  • Give your opinion – here mine is somewhat on both sides but I still choose overall job satisfaction.

Even if they can manage that, it will place incredible mental stress on not only them but also their spouse and children. 5. Research has shown these deeply ingrained anxieties from childhood can persist throughout adulthood.

  • Write a topic sentence with a main idea at the end.
  • Here I begin with a hypothetical example.
  • Develop the example with specific details.
  • Keep developing by detailing the results.
  • Add in more of the result to fully develop it.

People are divided by their opinion which is more essential in choosing a job. While some individuals claim that happiness in a job is more important, others believe that stability is the best factor to consider in a career. In my opinion, career growth can be achieved if a sense of enjoyment in a job could be felt. It is undeniable that being stable in a job is a dream for many individuals especially for people aiming to be secured and those who have plans for their future. Besides, the process of getting employed in a job is extremely hard. That is why people doing everything just to be permanent in their job. Moreover, being practical in life is on the mind of others to be able to secure their future. It means that whatever it takes, they tend to stay because they can get a better salary if they become permanent in their job even they are not enjoying it. On the other hand, being satisfied in a job is also important because it can contribute to a person’s motivation and productivity in the workplace. Positive vibes in the job’s everyday scenario are imperative for people’s general performance. According to research, people who are contented can be more productive and can show more enthusiasm for their job. For this reason, a sense of comfort in a job is a necessity to have more focus and concentration. To conclude, although stability in a job is important as it gives people a sense of security, being satisfied in a workplace is more essential. With this, happiness is always a significant factor to consider in settling for a job.

Dave

Well written Jessica!

Some feedback:

People can’t be divided by their own opinion but opinion can be divided…

The second paragraph is a little confusing – the question is not about why people remain in a job – but whether or not they should value a secure job. So then you can develop more the idea of a secure future with a hypothetical (or real) example.

There should be more development in the 3rd paragraph. Develop more the results of being more productive and motivated – there is too much repetition and summary.

Good conclusion!

Is this essay close to 6.5-7? Or below? Thank you so much.

Some of the vocabulary and grammar is near that level but you still have too many issues with task achievement and cohesion/coherence to be safely in that range.

Sandra

Hello, in this essay, it is not asked to write about family. Is it advisable to write this essay in the context of family just like you wrote in 1st body paragraph instead of generalised view? I mean job satisfaction in one paragraph and security in 2nd body paragraph(general view) should be ideal structure. In essay title, they haven’t asked about ‘people with families’. It seems general question about job security vs. job satisfaction. Please clear my doubt.

Hey Sandra, yes it is fine to focus it in the way that I did – the topic wasn’t specifically about the impact of family but that was the way I used to answer it – as long as you are answering the question directly then there are many different ways to write.

How to Plan & Write IELTS Opinion Essays

IELTS opinion essays, also known as ‘agree or disagree’ essays, come up frequently in the writing exam. In this lesson, I’m going to show you how to plan and write them step-by-step.

Here’s what we’ll be covering:

  • 3 Common mistakes
  • Essay structure
  • How to plan
  • How to write an introduction
  • How to write main body paragraphs
  • How to write a conclusion

Click the links to see lessons on each of these Task 2 essay writing topics.

Once you understand the process, practice on past questions. Take your time at first and gradually speed up until you can plan and write an essay of at least 250 words in the 40 minutes allowed in the exam.

The Question

The first part of the question for an IELTS opinion essay will be a statement. You will then be asked to give your own opinion about the statement. Here is some typical wording that might be used:

  • What is your opinion?
  • Do you agree or disagree?
  • To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Want  to watch and listen to this lesson?

Click on this video.

Here's a question from a past test paper.

A big salary is much more important than job satisfaction.

Do you agree or disagree?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

I’ll be using this question to guide you through the process of planning and writing an IELTS opinion essay.

3 Common Mistakes

These three errors are common in IELTS opinion essays.

  • Not stating an opinion.
  • Giving arguments for both views.
  • Not supporting your opinion with clear reasons.

The most common mistake that students make is not giving an opinion. The question will clearly state that you must choose one side of the argument. If you fail to do this, you will get a low score for task achievement.

It doesn’t matter which side of the argument you take or even, that you agree with it. Choose the one you can develop the best argument for.

Make sure that you don’t change your opinion part way through the essay, and don’t give reasons for the opposing view.

Essay Structure

Now let’s look at a simple structure you can use to write opinion essays. It’s not the only possible structure but it’s the one I recommend because it’s easy to learn and will enable you to quickly plan and write a high-level essay.

1)  Introduction

  • Paraphrase the question
  • Give your opinion
  • State two supporting reasons

2)  Main body paragraph 1

  • Topic sentence – outline 1st reason for supporting this view
  • Explanation – explain this idea
  • Example – give an example  or expand the idea

3)  Main body paragraph 2

  • Topic sentence – outline 2nd reason for supporting this view
  • Example – give an example or expand the idea

4)  Conclusion

  • Summarise opinion and key reasons

This structure will give us a well-balanced essay with 4 paragraphs.

We now need some ideas to add into the structure and we’ll have everything we need for our essay.

How To Plan IELTS Opinion Essays

# 1  decide on your opinion.

The question I've chosen to work on is quite straightforward and easy to understand so we don’t need to spend time analysing it. The first task, then, is to decide on our opinion.

Here’s the question again:

A big salary is much more important than job satisfaction.

Do you agree or disagree?

For this essay, I’m going to disagree with the statement and argue that job satisfaction is more important than a big salary.

# 2  Generate ideas

The second task is to generate some ideas to write about.

Since I‘m going to argue that job satisfaction is more important than a large salary, I need ideas to support this view.

There are several different ways to think up ideas. I cover them fully on the  IELTS Essay Planning  page.

With this particular question, I immediately thought of a couple of examples of situations where job satisfaction did prove to be more important than a high salary, so I’m going to use the ‘example method’ of generating ideas.

Once you’ve thought of an example or two, ideas to include in your essay should come to you easily.

You might want to try this yourself before reading on for my ideas.

Here are my examples and some ideas they generated.

Both the examples are partly true but I've adapted them to better fit the essay. It's fine to do this as the examiner won't check your facts.

  • Uncle Barry – boasted about high salary but hated his job. Nervous breakdown – lost job & can’t work.
  • Me – gave up teaching. Now enjoy my work and am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn much less money.
  • High-salary jobs are generally more stressful
  • Stress leads to ill health, both mental and physical
  • 40 hours a week at work – a third of the day
  • Money doesn’t bring happiness
  • Better quality of life
  • Sense of fulfilment
  • Less stressed – healthier and happier

I’ve got more ideas here than I need so I’m going to pick two to develop in the essay – one for each of the main body paragraphs.

Idea 1 – High-salary jobs are generally more stressful and can lead to ill health.

Idea 2 – Job satisfaction gives a sense of fulfilment.

We’re almost ready to start writing our IELTS opinion essay but first, we have one other small task to do.

# 3  Vocabulary

In an IELTS essay, it’s important to be able to say the same things in different ways, either by paraphrasing and/or using synonyms. During the planning stage, quickly jot down a few synonyms of key words you could use to save you having to stop and think of the right language while you’re writing.

For example:

satisfaction – fulfilment, achievement, sense of accomplishment, content, sense of well-being

salary – income, wages, pay, earnings

important – significant, valued, has more meaning

job – work, employment, position

With that done, we can focus on the first paragraph of the essay – the introduction.

How To Write an Introduction

A good introduction has a simple 3 part structure:

1)  Paraphrased question

2)  Thesis statement

3)  outline statement.

An introduction should:

  • Have 2-3 sentences
  • Be 40-60 words long
  • Take 5 minutes to write

1)  Paraphrase the question

Start your introduction by paraphrasing the question.

Question:  A big salary is much more important than job satisfaction.

                       Do you agree or disagree?

Paraphrased question:

It is argued that earning lots of money has more significance to people than being content in their work.

Note that I’ve used some of the synonyms I listed, although it’s fine to repeat one or two words if you need to. Above all, your language must sound natural.

In IELTS opinion essays, the thesis statement is where you state your opinion. For example,

    Thesis statement:

This essay totally disagrees with that statement.

That’s all you need to say.

If you decided to agree with the statement, you would write:

'This essay completely agrees with that statement.'

Finally in the introduction, you must outline the two main points (ideas 1 and 2 above) that you’ll cover in the rest of the essay. Do it in one sentence, or you can add them onto the end of the thesis statement if appropriate.

Outl ine statement:

I believe that people are increasingly concerned about the risk of stress-related ill-health frequently experienced by people in highly paid positions and they care more about feeling fulfilled at work.

So, let’s bring the three elements of our introduction together.

     Introduction

job satisfaction opinion essay

This introduction achieves three important functions:

  • It shows the examiner that you understand the question.
  • It acts as a guide to the examiner as to what your essay is about.
  • It also helps to keep you focused and on track as you write.

The two ideas in your introduction will become your two main body paragraphs.

Main body paragraph 1  – concerns about the risk of stress-related ill-health

Main body paragraph 2  – a sense of fulfilment at work

How To Write Main Body Paragraphs

The structure of a good main body paragraph has 3 parts:

  • Topic sentence
  • Explanation

If you can’t think of an example, you can add further supporting ideas but we already have our two examples so that’s not an issue here.

A common problem when writing main body paragraphs for IELTS opinion essays is having too many ideas. Again, we have already chosen the two ideas we are going to develop, so we are all set to start writing.

You can see how important the planning stage is and how it makes the actual writing of the essay far quicker and easier.

Main Body Paragraph 1

The  topic sentence  summarises the main idea of the paragraph. That’s all it needs to do so it doesn’t have to be complicated.

It plays an important role in ensuring that your ideas flow logically from one to another. It does this by acting as a signpost for what is to come next, that is, what the paragraph will be about.

If you maintain a clear development of ideas throughout your essay, you will get high marks for task achievement and cohesion and coherence.

We’ll now take the idea for our first main body paragraph and create our topic sentence.

Main idea 1  – concerns about the risk of stress-related ill-health

Topic sentence:

Employees earning a large income are generally under significant mental and emotional pressure to perform well and achieve targets.

Next, we must write an  explanation sentence . This explains to the examiner what we mean. It expands on our first idea.

Explanation sentence:

This causes many individuals to suffer high levels of stress which can result in both mental and physical health problems.

Finally, we add an  example  to support our main point. I thought of this in the planning stage so I have it ready to use.

If you can’t think of a real example, it’s fine to make one up, as long as it’s believable. The examiner isn’t going to check your facts.

Example sentence:

This happened to my uncle. He used to boast about his huge salary but the boss kept increasing his sales targets and in the end, the stress became too great and he had a nervous breakdown. Now he regrets being driven by the money.

That’s the 3 parts of our first main body paragraph complete. Here’s the finished paragraph.

job satisfaction opinion essay

We now follow the same process for our second main body paragraph.

Main Body Paragraph 2

Main idea 2  – Job satisfaction gives a sense of fulfilment.

First, we write the  topic sentence  to summarise the main idea.

Topic sentence:

Having a job that they enjoy doing, and in which they feel valued, is a major concern for most of the modern workforce.

Now for the  explanation sentence  to explain this idea.

Explanation sentence:

A significant number of people are giving up well-paid positions to do jobs which pay less but that they find more enjoyable and less stressful.

Finally, an  example  to support our main point. As before, I thought of this in the planning stage so just need to form it into a couple of sentences.

I am an example of this myself. A year ago I left the teaching profession because the workload had become too great and I am now a gardener. I feel really fulfilled in this work and I am much more relaxed and happy even though I earn far less money.

That’s the 3 parts of our second main body paragraph complete. Here’s the finished paragraph.

job satisfaction opinion essay

Now we need a conclusion and our IELTS opinion essay is done.

How To Write a Conclusion

Conclusions to IELTS opinion essays should do two things:

  • Summarise the main points
  • State your opinion

This can generally be done in a single sentence.

If you are below the minimum 250 words after you’ve written your conclusion, you can add an additional prediction or recommendation statement.

Our essay currently has 233 words so we’re on target and don’t need this extra sentence but you can learn more about how to write a prediction or recommendation statement for IELTS opinion essays on the Task 2 Conclusions page.

The conclusion is the easiest sentence in the essay to write but one of the most important.

A good conclusion will:

  • Neatly end the essay
  • Link all your ideas together
  • Sum up your argument or opinion
  • Answer the question

If you achieve this, you’ll improve your score for both task achievement and cohesion and coherence which together make up 50% of the overall marks. Without a conclusion, you’ll score below band 6 for task achievement.

You can start almost any final paragraph of an IELTS opinion essay with the words:

  • In conclusion

        or

  • To conclude

Now all you need to do is briefly summarise the main ideas into one sentence.

Here’s a top tip . Go back and read the introduction to the essay because this is also a summary of the essay. It outlines what you are going to write about.

To create a great conclusion, you simply have to paraphrase the introduction. Let’s give it a go.

Introduction:

In this IELTS Writing Task 2 Agree/Disagree essay, we will support the notion that 'Big Salary is More Important than Job Satisfaction'. We will look into the complexities of salary, exploring multifaceted perspectives, real-world examples, and the change in people’s lives by getting a bigger paycheck.

IELTS Writing Task 2 requires test-takers to compose a coherent essay in response to a given prompt. In IELTS Agree-Disagree essays , candidates express their stance on a statement and support it with relevant arguments. Graded on a scale of 1 to 9, achieving a Band 7, 8, or 9 indicates varying levels of proficiency.

Type: Agree or Disagree

Engage the reader with a relevant quote, statistic, or anecdote about the importance of career choices. Clearly state your opinion on whether a big salary is more crucial than job satisfaction.

Band 7 Sample Answer

In the ongoing debate about whether a big salary is more important than job satisfaction, there are valid arguments on both sides. While a substantial income can provide financial security and opportunities, job satisfaction is equally essential for one’s overall well-being and happiness.

For those advocating a big salary, financial stability is a primary concern. High earnings can help individuals lead a comfortable life, support their families, and invest in their future. Moreover, a generous paycheck can motivate employees to work harder and be more productive, as it offers them a tangible reward for their efforts.

However, job satisfaction cannot be underestimated. A fulfilling job not only makes the workday more enjoyable but also contributes to an individual’s mental and emotional well-being. When people love what they do, they tend to be more committed, creative, and enthusiastic, which can lead to career advancement and success in the long run.

In conclusion, the importance of a big salary versus job satisfaction depends on individual priorities. While a substantial income can provide financial security, job satisfaction plays a vital role in overall happiness and productivity. Striking a balance between the two is the ideal scenario.

Band 8 Sample Answer

The debate surrounding the relative significance of a big salary in comparison to job satisfaction has persisted for years. Both aspects have their merits and drawbacks, and the answer depends largely on an individual’s priorities and circumstances.

For those who prioritize a big salary, financial considerations take the forefront. High earnings can open doors to a more comfortable lifestyle, allowing people to afford better housing, education, and other amenities. Additionally, a substantial income can serve as a strong motivator for employees, incentivizing them to excel in their roles.

Conversely, job satisfaction is not to be overlooked. Contentment at work can lead to a higher quality of life, better mental health, and enhanced overall well-being. People who love their jobs tend to be more productive, creative, and loyal to their employers. Over time, this can translate into career success and advancement.

In conclusion, the question of whether a big salary is more important than job satisfaction is subjective. It hinges on individual values and priorities. Striking a balance between financial stability and job satisfaction may be the key to long-term career happiness and success.

Band 9 Sample Answer

The perpetual debate surrounding whether a hefty paycheck trumps job satisfaction is an intricate conundrum. The value attributed to each factor is a matter of personal perspective and circumstances. On one hand, the allure of a substantial income is undeniable, given its capacity to furnish a life of opulence and financial security. On the other hand, job satisfaction embodies an elusive elixir that permeates an individual’s well-being.

The significance of pecuniary abundance cannot be overstated. A generous salary underwrites a comfortable existence, affording access to top-notch healthcare, education, and leisure pursuits. Furthermore, it operates as a potent incentive, propelling individuals to strive for excellence, thereby benefiting both the employee and the employer alike.

In contrast, job satisfaction epitomizes the zenith of occupational well-being. It nourishes an individual’s psyche, fostering a positive mental state, enthusiasm, and an unwavering commitment to their tasks. The ensuing increase in creativity and productivity lays the groundwork for a distinguished career trajectory.

IELTS Writing task 2 | Job satisfaction

dream job, application, location

WRITING TASK 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

As most people spend a major part of their adult life at work, job satisfaction is an important element of individual wellbeing.

What factors contribute to job satisfaction?

How realistic is the expectation of job satisfaction for all workers?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Write at least 250 words.

There is no doubt that job satisfaction plays a significant role in a person’s health and wellbeing. If a person spends a large amount of time doing a job that they do not enjoy it can have a detrimental effect on their health both physically and mentally. However, I believe there are some common factors that lead to job satisfaction, but I do not think is achievable for everyone.

Firstly, a supportive employer can be a major factor for employees. If people feel appreciated at work with incentive schemes based on performance or career development opportunities, they will find their job more rewarding Colleagues also contribute to job satisfaction as a negative working environment can lead to anxiety and poor performance which could ultimately create more problems in the workplace. Although many people would consider money as the main factor for a satisfying job, I believe interest is the most significant. If a person really enjoys what they do, then they will be satisfied at work regardless of the salary.

Unfortunately, job satisfaction is not possible for all workers. In developing countries, the education level is often poor so that limits what kind of job people can get, often the only jobs available are  blue collar manufacturing jobs. In these countries, poverty is a serious issue and people need to take any job they can just to provide for their family. In addition, due to the recent global pandemic, many people have lost their jobs, so it is not unusual to find someone with a university degree delivering packages for Amazon. In these circumstances, job satisfaction is likely to be low as working is just a means of making money.

In conclusion, although there are some common factors that lead to job satisfaction these will vary from person to person. However, in many situations people have no choice but to take any job they can get to survive, job satisfaction is not even a consideration.

Essay analysis

The introduction is clear and the writer has clearly outlined what ideas are going to follow in the essay.

For some topics you may have a lot of ideas and it will not be possible to include them all.  In this essay the writer has chosen to include some ‘common factors’ in the first paragraph that most people would probably agree would provide job satisfaction, however, there could be other factors more relevant for you.  The second paragraph deals with the second part of the question in more global terms using developing countries and the recent global pandemic as examples to show that in these circumstances job satisfaction is unlikely. Both paragraphs have clear ideas and transitional phrases have been used effectively. The conclusion summarises the main ideas of the essay and gives a final comment on the topic.

IELTS Writing Task 2 - Opinion Essay (job gratification vs. job security)

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion..

Holt  Educational Consultant - / 15168   Jun 28, 2021   #2 The essay shows that the writer misunderstood the writing requirement for the topic. While the reasoning presented is somewhat on point, the writing presentation does not meet the prompt discussion requirement of discussing then topics based on the public opinion first. The writer has completed the essay solely froma solid personal point of view only. The score of the essay will only be useful to one of the 3 required writing paragraphs. The lack of 2 public opinion explanation prevents the full scoring consideration for this essay. The personal opinion should have been based on a comparative discussion of the 2 public supporting reasons. There are no right or wrong opinions here. Only an analytical support for a side that the writer believes is more aligned with his beliefs. That cannot be accurately presented unless a clear understanding of the public reasons is delivered first.

countryno81 1 / 1   Jun 28, 2021   #3 The question requires you to discuss both views and give your opinion. As far as I can tell, you should write both advantages and disadvantages of each view. Then, you will give your thinking.

Fully explain your ideas

To get an excellent score in the IELTS Task 2 writing section, one of the easiest and most effective tips is structuring your writing in the most solid format. A great argument essay structure may be divided to four paragraphs, in which comprises of four sentences (excluding the conclusion paragraph, which comprises of three sentences).

For we to consider an essay structure a great one, it should be looking like this:

  • Paragraph 1 - Introduction
  • Sentence 1 - Background statement
  • Sentence 2 - Detailed background statement
  • Sentence 3 - Thesis
  • Sentence 4 - Outline sentence
  • Paragraph 2 - First supporting paragraph
  • Sentence 1 - Topic sentence
  • Sentence 2 - Example

Some people say job satisfaction is more important than job security, others think people cannot always enjoy their jobs. So, having a permanent job is more important. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

That people should pursue the job satisfaction of job security has controversial. Several people believe that finding a sense of job satisfaction is more meaning to people's lives than taking a job safety. Others assume that having a stable career is the most essential matter. This essay will discuss both views.

To begin with, there are some reasons for choosing job satisfaction rather than job security. First and foremost, job satisfaction inspire people to work better. For example, if you work in a good working environment with satisfaction about salaries, positions or promotion chances, you will feel comfortable to finish every tasks well, thus the productivity of company will increase. It is seen clearly that working under an unmotivated circumstance bring workers unhappiness and depression. In addition, working in conditions which you get on well with colleagues and manager will help you gain achievements smoothly and easily. You also have a range of skills and experience when you finish the work.

However, some people think that it is impossible to always enjoy their work, so securing a job safety is more important. Firstly, having a permanent job make their lives more stable. Due to the fact that if they are experienced staffs, they will have more opportunities to promote and raise their salaries. This makes their standard lives more better. Moreover, each job has pros and cons so it is too hard to find a perfect job, people need to adapt to different working environment.

In conclusion, although having a stable job is necessary, i strongly believe that people should secure a work which they feel sense of job satisfaction since it is key for people to finish the assignments well and have a good condition to develop themselves.

Job Satisfaction: Why Is It Important?

Satisfied employees are more likely to stay with the organization.

Jeff Rumage

Job satisfaction is an important way to measure whether employees like their job. When employees are happy or satisfied, they are less likely to leave their company, which leads to higher morale and more productivity for the organization as a whole.

Job satisfaction is influenced by many factors, like the nature of the work itself, pay and benefits, workplace relationships and career development opportunities. While it’s tricky to quantify, companies still try to keep a pulse on how their employees feel about their jobs.

One way to gauge job satisfaction is to administer engagement surveys that ask employees various questions, like if they feel they have enough access to learning opportunities, if they find their work fulfilling or if they enjoy working with their manager. Companies may also look at metrics like absentee rates and turnover rates to determine whether employees are satisfied at work.

Before taking steps to measure — and improve — job satisfaction, companies must first understand what exactly job satisfaction is, why it’s important and what contributes to it.

What Is Job Satisfaction?

Put simply, job satisfaction refers to whether an employee is happy with their job. This could be based on their salary, their relationship with their manager and other workplace factors.

Job satisfaction is similar but different from  employee engagement , which describes an employee’s enthusiasm, passion and commitment to the work (and is a  strong indicator of increased productivity, profitability and satisfied customers).

“Job satisfaction is more of an attitude,” said Paul Spector, professor at the  University of South Florida’s Muma College of Business , author of  Job Satisfaction: From Assessment to Intervention and a renowned researcher in the field of employee well-being and behavior. “It’s the extent to which you have a favorable attitude or favorable opinion or favorable feelings about your work.”

Most engaged employees are satisfied with their job, but not all satisfied employees are engaged in their work. The only real way to gauge employee job satisfaction is by asking employees about their job. Spector, author of the widely used  Job Satisfaction Survey , developed 36 questions addressing nine facets of job satisfaction: pay, promotion, supervision, fringe benefits, performance-based rewards, operating procedures, coworkers, nature of work and communication.

What Factors Contribute to Job Satisfaction?

Job satisfaction is a subjective experience that depends on an individual’s career priorities . One person may be satisfied with a job that is  boring but offers high pay and job stability, while another may be satisfied with a job simply because they like their supervisor and their coworkers.

Some  researchers have argued that an employee’s temperament influences their level of job satisfaction, and that they’re more likely to be satisfied with their job if they have high self-esteem, belief in their competence, a sense of control over their life and low levels of neuroticism.

That said, the following factors can have a major impact on employees’ job satisfaction.

Factors Impacting Job Satisfaction

  • Nature of the work
  • Pay and benefits
  • Work-life balance
  • Job security
  • Employee recognition
  • Relationship with manager
  • Relationship with peers
  • Career development
  • Feedback and communication
  • Employer reputation and values

Nature of the Work

When asked if they like their job, employees tend to focus on the concrete tasks and responsibilities required by it, according to Spector — perhaps because they see that as the most salient answer to the question. Spector also said employees tend to be more satisfied when their role aligns with their interests and their abilities.

Employees want to find a sense of purpose in the workplace, so companies may want to take measures to keep workers’ everyday tasks interesting. Asking employees to take on new challenges and letting them work on passion projects are great ways to liven up an otherwise dull job and make employees feel more connected to their roles.

Pay and Benefits

A strong benefits package with ample compensation can be a difference maker when attracting top talent and retaining high performers. About 64 percent of job-seekers list an increase in pay or benefits as their biggest priority, so companies would do well to bolster their benefits with generous compensation and a clear-cut merit pay system.

Pay transparency plays a role in satisfaction too. According to a  study by compensation software company PayScale, employees who work for organizations with low pay transparency were 183 percent more likely to leave than employees at companies with high pay transparency.

Work-Life Balance

When considering job satisfaction, employees are affected by their  work-life balance .

For some employees, good work-life balance might mean having enough time outside of work to enjoy family and friends and pursue hobbies and interests. For others, it’s more about the ability to  work remotely or on a  hybrid basis, which might be particularly important for the satisfaction of employees who have children and could use some extra flexibility.

“I think if you give people flexibility, that maximizes satisfaction,” Spector said. “The people who want to come in every day will come in every day, and the people who don’t, won’t — and that’s fine.”

Job Security

Company downsizings and layoffs can take a toll on employees still with the company, reducing their productivity and the quality of their organization’s products and services. And with the chance of another round of layoffs looming, it can be difficult for employees to focus on their roles and feel motivated to perform well.

While companies can’t always guarantee job security, leaders can maintain trust with employees by remaining transparent through stressful times and communicating any upcoming business changes.

Employee Recognition

Employees want to feel appreciated, and a little recognition can go a long way toward satisfaction. While 63 percent of workers don’t think they get enough praise, employees who do receive enough recognition are 56 percent less likely to search for a new job.

Companies can make workers feel seen through recognition programs , which may include shout-outs, employee awards and pay raises. And organizations with remote workers may also want to adjust their programs to accommodate employees not in the office.

Relationship With Manager

Managers can have a lasting impact on an employee’s time at an organization. Case in point: relationships with management make up 86 percent of the satisfaction employees feel in workplace relationships.

According to Amy Spurling, founder and CEO of  Compt , an employee stipends platform, there is a lot of truth to the saying that employees “don’t quit companies, they quit managers.”

“Even if you love the company and you love the mission, if your manager’s a nightmare, you’re not going to be very satisfied at work,” Spurling said. “You’re going to be really frustrated and you’re probably going to go somewhere else.”

Relationship With Peers

Developing closer connections with coworkers can also boost job satisfaction levels among employees. In fact, employees who have a best friend at work are 17 percent more likely to strongly agree with the statement that they’re extremely satisfied working in their current place of employment.

Besides being able to look forward to company happy hours and hangouts outside of work , employees with tight bonds may find it easier to collaborate with each other and meet deadlines. Feeling like they can rely on their teammates for support when needed takes a lot of pressure off of employees and leads to a more relaxed environment.

Career Development

Being able to build one’s career is something employees value, but many businesses have failed to respond accordingly. A Pew Research study found that only 33 percent of workers are satisfied with promotion opportunities at work and 44 percent are satisfied with opportunities to learn new skills. Companies that invest in upskilling initiatives can then set themselves apart as attractive landing spots for ambitious workers looking to grow as professionals .

Feedback and Communication

Feedback is essential for job satisfaction. With proper feedback, employees can ensure they and their manager are on the same page, which goes a long way toward  building trust . Unfortunately, less than half of workers are satisfied with the amount of feedback they receive.

Companies can change this by emphasizing employee communication , which starts at the managerial level. By scheduling frequent one-on-ones with direct reports, managers can create a safe space for employees to ask questions and receive constructive criticism . This gives employees the attention they need to become better at their jobs while also feeling seen by team leaders.

Employer Reputation and Values

More than half (54 percent) of workers would take less pay to join a company with better values , and 56 percent wouldn’t take a job at a company with disagreeable values. Speaking about their company with pride means something to employees, so businesses must go beyond giving lip service to their company mission statement .

Companies can practice the values they preach by offering volunteer days to employees, donating profits to local charities and enlisting workers to provide free services to underserved communities. These actions make employees feel better about the business and could encourage them to advocate for their company as a place to work.

Why Is Job Satisfaction So Important?

Companies and professionals have much to gain from job satisfaction. Below are some of the main advantages that come with it.

Higher Employee Engagement

If employees have high job satisfaction, they are more likely to be engaged in their work, perform at a high level and contribute to a positive work environment.

Mindy Honcoop, founder of fractional HR consulting firm  Agile in HR , likens job satisfaction to a bellwether for an organization’s culture.

“If you start to see your satisfaction start to become inconsistent and decrease,” Honcoop said, “you can almost guarantee that your team health and your overall engagement is going to decline even more.”

More Profits

Engagement is a key people metric for organizations, since it’s often related to profitability. When comparing teams with the lowest and highest levels of engagement, those with higher levels of engagement were found to be 23 percent more profitable . Organizations that invest in making their employees happy empower them to focus on their jobs without distractions, leading to more productivity — and more profit.

Lower Turnover

Employees who are satisfied with their job are also more likely to stay with the organization, Spector added. This isn’t surprising since employees who leave their jobs often cite factors closely tied to low job satisfaction — poor pay, lack of advancement opportunities, feeling disrespected and weak benefits.

Convincing employees to stick around is a significant business advantage, because each employee who leaves the company takes valuable institutional knowledge and client relationships with them. It also necessitates the  costly , time-consuming process of recruiting, hiring and training their replacement.

How to Improve Job Satisfaction

Companies that want to get serious about improving job satisfaction should start by listening to employees . That way, they can learn about the issues that matter to employees, the resources they need to do their jobs better and their ideas for how the organization’s culture can improve.

1. Listen to Employee Feedback

Organizations can get a sense of an employee’s job satisfaction through regular conversations, listening sessions and surveys.

When workers express dissatisfaction or negative feelings on surveys, Spurling said it’s important for managers or human resources teams to dive in and find out the root causes of those negative feelings. By talking with employees, managers can learn more about the causes of their team’s dissatisfaction, what issues they face and what resources can be put in place to help them do their job.

“They’re sounding an alarm bell to say, ‘Hey, something is off here, and we need to fix it,’” Spurling said. “You want that negative feedback from your employees when things are going south so that you can fix it.”

2. Provide Career Development Resources

Career development programs have been shown to  increase job satisfaction and employee retention. Companies can implement management training programs to nurture future leaders, but they should also develop employees who want to grow and advance their career beyond the management track. Through  career pathing , managers can help employees adopt  long-term goals , develop a career development plan and advance their skills and work experience to meet the employee’s goals.

Spector also suggests organizations create fair and transparent criteria for promotions , so that employees know how they are being evaluated and what steps they can take to advance within the organization. It’s hard to be satisfied with your job if it’s unclear how to advance in it.

3. Promote Employee Wellness

Organizations can also invest in their people’s satisfaction by  promoting wellness . This might include providing more flexible work arrangements, keeping workloads reasonable and encouraging employees to take time off for rest and relaxation.

An organizational culture that encourages managers to check in with employees about their well-being — and for employees to check in with each other — contributes to satisfaction too.

Similar to the way that companies plan features in their product roadmap, Honcoop said companies may want to consider creating an HR product roadmap for establishing a culture of well-being.

“It’s all about ecosystem health,” Honcoop said. “When we have a company culture with ecosystem health, that means the employees are healthy…and then your end-consumers and customers are happier too, which does positively impact the community and society. You just have greater positive outcomes at all levels.”
