Gender inequality isn’t just unfair — it’s also a drag on the world economy. Giving women the same economic opportunities as men would add about US$12 trillion to global gross domestic product by 2025, one analysis found. That’s an 11% boost.

The link between women’s empowerment and economic growth is well established. When women are economically empowered, they invest more in their families, creating a cycle of positive outcomes that spans generations . Women’s participation in the workforce leads to greater productivity and brings diverse perspectives that enhance decision-making and drive innovation .

Recognizing these benefits, governments and nongovernmental organizations have increasingly directed aid — funds provided to developing countries to foster economic growth — toward promoting women’s empowerment.

As an economist who studies development , I wanted to know: Does all that money really make a difference? So, in a recent study , my colleagues and I analyzed the impact of gender-related aid on gender inequality using data from 118 countries over a 13-year period, from 2009 to 2022.

What we found was uplifting: Gender-related aid reduced inequality in most countries we studied.

We looked at two types of gender-related aid. The first is funding for projects that tie gender into larger economic goals. Development experts call this “ significant gender-related aid .” There’s also aid funding that narrowly and explicitly targets gender equality. Experts call this “principal gender-related aid.”

We found that the first approach consistently and significantly reduced gender inequality in 115 out of 118 countries we studied. The latter approach had statistically significant effects in 85 countries. It also appeared to be much more effective when paired with the first approach.

Our findings strongly suggest that integrating gender-related aid into broader development efforts is crucial for promoting gender equality. Gender and development are intricately intertwined, a fact often overlooked. Recognizing this connection is crucial for achieving sustainable and inclusive growth.

Women’s empowerment success stories

That might all sound pretty abstract, but our research shows that the world has made progress in real people’s lives over the past decades. Cases from several countries show just how much progress is possible:

Rwanda: Following the 1994 genocide, Rwanda made a concerted effort to rebuild its society with gender equality at its core. Today, women hold 61% of parliamentary seats , the highest percentage in the world . This remarkable achievement is in part a direct result of gender-focused policies and significant investments in women’s political empowerment. Rwanda’s progress illustrates how political will and dedicated gender-related aid can transform a society .

Bangladesh: Despite traditional gender roles, Bangladesh has made significant strides in gender equality , particularly in education and economic participation . Through targeted programs like the Female Secondary School Stipend Program and microfinance initiatives by organizations like the Grameen Bank, Bangladesh has seen substantial improvements in girls’ education and women’s economic empowerment. These initiatives have contributed to a decline in gender disparities and have spurred economic growth.

Ethiopia: In recent decades, Ethiopia has invested heavily in education , particularly for girls. Programs aimed at increasing school enrollment and reducing dropout rates among girls have led to improved literacy rates and better health outcomes. These educational advancements have empowered women economically and socially, reducing gender inequality .

Despite progress made, these achievements aren’t set in stone. Instability can rapidly undo years of progress. Recent policy backsliding in Afghanistan , Brazil and the United States shows the need for vigilance.

Empowering women empowers men, too

Discussions about the importance of reducing gender inequality often revolve around the direct benefits to women and girls. But everyone, including men, stands to win in a more gender-equal society.

First, women’s economic empowerment leads to stronger economies , which benefits everyone. Research shows that gender equality promotes healthier relationships, reduces violence and fosters more cohesive and supportive communities . Similarly, workplaces prioritizing gender equality tend to have better team dynamics, higher employee satisfaction and increased productivity . These are gains for everyone, regardless of gender.

And gender equality has distinct benefits for men. This is because it alleviates the pressures associated with traditional masculinity , which can lead to better mental health. For example, in more gender-equal societies, men report being happier with life and less stressed and depressed .

This shows that the benefits of gender equality aren’t limited to women and girls; they extend to all members of society. Everyone has a stake in helping progress move along.

Research-backed best practices

Governments and aid professionals should follow five steps for success to safeguard the advances made in gender equality and continue progressing:

1. Keep the aid flowing: Continued financial and technical support for gender equality initiatives is vital. Our research suggests policymakers should focus on integrating gender considerations into all development projects.

2. Engage everyone: Involving men and boys in gender equality efforts helps to challenge and change harmful gender norms, fostering a more inclusive society.

3. Tailor strategies: Although aid has an effect across the board, gender equality initiatives must consider each country’s unique sociopolitical and cultural contexts. Tailoring strategies to fit these contexts ensures that interventions are relevant and practical .

4. Strengthen institutions: Effective institutions and governance are crucial for successfully implementing and sustaining gender equality initiatives. Efforts to improve governance and reduce corruption will enhance the impact of aid

5. Promote education: Schools are a powerful tool for promoting gender equality. Investing in educational programs that empower women and girls and raise awareness about gender issues is essential for long-term change .

Gender equality is a cornerstone of a just and prosperous society. The benefits of empowering women extend far beyond the immediate recipients of gender-related aid, fostering economic growth, political stability and social cohesion. Our research shows that efforts to empower women really do pay off — literally and otherwise.

Why asking women to lean in undermines gender equality efforts.

Women in leadership are often encouraged to "Lean In," a phrase popularized by the book Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg, the former Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. The message is clear: confidence and resilience are the keys to breaking through the glass ceiling. However, a new research study , which includes a survey of over 1100 women, finds that "lean in" messaging reduces women's motivation to protest gender inequality.

"The messages are certainly about the self and how you can build your resilience. So, by implication, there's a blame-the-victim narrative there. It's like you could get ahead if you were more resilient," says Dr Renata Bongiorno , lead author of the research and Senior Lecturer in Psychology at Bath Spa University.

While leaning in may boost an individual's sense of agency, it can inadvertently shift the focus away from addressing the systemic barriers women face and, worse still, hold women solely accountable for fixing gender inequality at work.

"It is interesting because other research did find the lean in narrative results in women being more likely to be blamed for ongoing gender inequality and more likely to be seen as responsible for fixing it", she says.

The lean in approach encourages organizational solutions focused on fixing women rather than fixing organizational policies, processes and cultures that devalue women and their contributions. Importantly, these messages also damage men's perceptions of women.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024, "it makes men feel like women could get ahead if they were more resilient. both men and women are more likely to blame women for gender inequality and think women are responsible for fixing," says dr bongiorno..

While it is enticing to believe that women alone can overcome gender inequality, Dr Bongiorno says a lack of individual resilience or perseverance is not the reason for the poor representation of women in leadership. Moreover, this narrative is counterproductive as it prevents collective action.

To overcome these challenges, Dr Bongiorno shares three actions companies can take to ensure their gender equality efforts have the right impact.

Examine Existing Efforts

There are countless self-help books and programs designed to help women fix themselves to get ahead. These programs and trainings tell women they must upskill themselves, join women's groups, find a mentor, attend conferences, learn to negotiate, speak up, ask for a pay rise, and own their power. However, Dr Bongiorno says initiatives like these can make women feel worse about themselves.

"Women realize their organization isn't actually going to do anything to change itself. It's all about how you must be more resilient in this organization to fit in."

While individual-focused initiatives can support personal development, they do not address the systemic barriers gender inequality creates. For example, there is a commonly held belief that women are not paid the same as men because they can't negotiate and don't ask for a pay rise as frequently as their male colleagues. But, a 2018 research study finds that women do ask for a pay raise just as often as men, but they are less likely to be given one because of gender bias.

If companies want to advance gender equity, they must examine their existing efforts to understand how many solutions focus on changing women rather than changing the organization's culture, systems, policies and processes.

Get The Balance Right

Once organizations have reviewed their existing efforts, they need to ensure there is a balance between individual and organizational solutions. At a minimum, organizations should aim to have at least one organizational-wide initiative for every initiative focused on women.

"If organizations focused as much on how they will change their systems and processes, it would make it easier for women to progress. But it's often the case that they don't have those types of interventions because they're a lot harder to change," she says.

When companies don't get the balance right, Dr Bongiorno says it perpetuates gender inequality and places the blame for this on women.

Enroll Men To Be A Part Of The Solution

Dr Bongiorno believes that fix-the-women solutions are popular because these initiatives make it seem like companies are committed to tackling gender inequality even though the problem is not being addressed.

"I think these strategies can be popular with leadership because it's like, 'Oh, look, we are doing something, but we don't actually have to change ourselves; we just have to make women more resilient'. I don't think the solution is to focus on ourselves continuously or how we can ride it out alone. It's about support from others," she says.

Every organization can educate men on the barriers women experience and then engage them to identify solutions to remove these obstacles. It's time to rethink the fix-the-women narrative and ensure that company strategies for advancing women don't inadvertently hold women back.

Women's Equality Day: The challenges women still face today

Despite progress, women still face challenges in achieving true equality across society, from the workplace to personal freedoms..

Monday August 26, 2024 , 5 min Read

Women's Equality Day, observed annually on August 26th, marks the progress made in the fight for gender equality while also highlighting the ongoing struggles that women continue to face worldwide. In India, a country known for its cultural diversity and vibrant traditions, the celebration of this day carries a dual significance.

While there have been remarkable strides in the empowerment of women , the reality is that deep-rooted societal norms, economic disparities, and systemic challenges still impede true equality.

Gender pay Gap: The unseen discrimination

One of the most glaring issues is the gender pay gap . Despite numerous efforts, Indian women still earn less than their male counterparts for the same work. According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2023, India ranks 127th out of 146 countries on economic participation and opportunity. The report highlights that women in India earn about 30% less than men in similar roles. This gap is even wider in rural areas, where societal norms often restrict women to lower-paying jobs or informal work.

For instance, the disparity is stark in the tech industry—a field often touted as a great equaliser. Even as women break into coding and IT roles, they face promotion and leadership opportunities barriers. Companies like Infosys and Wipro have committed to gender diversity, yet women still struggle to rise to C-suite positions. A study by Avtar, a diversity and inclusion consulting firm, found that only 11% of Indian women in tech reach senior leadership roles.

The double burden of work and home

The concept of the "double burden" continues to plague Indian women. Even as they enter the workforce in increasing numbers, the expectation that they will manage household responsibilities has not diminished. The National Sample Survey (NSS) 2019 showed that women spend about 299 minutes daily on unpaid domestic work, compared to 97 minutes for men. This imbalance severely limits their ability to focus on careers, education, or even rest.

Violence and safety: A persistent threat

While awareness of gender-based violence has increased, the situation on the ground remains dire. In 2024, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) continues to report disturbingly high rates of crimes against women . Rape, domestic violence, and acid attacks are still rampant, with only a small percentage of cases resulting in convictions. The justice system’s delays, coupled with societal stigma, discourage many women from even reporting these crimes.

The 2024, brutal rape and murder of a 31-year-old female trainee doctor at Kolkata's R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital have sparked national outrage, leading to widespread protests and raising urgent questions about the safety and security within medical institutions.

The 2023 Delhi gang rape case, which shocked the nation, is a grim reminder that not enough has changed since the infamous Nirbhaya case of 2012. Although new laws were enacted, and fast-track courts were introduced, the deep-seated patriarchy that fuels such violence remains largely unaddressed. Women continue to face harassment in public spaces, and cities like Delhi and Bengaluru are often ranked among the most unsafe for women globally.

Political representation: A long way to go

Women's political representation in India remains another area where progress is slow. Although the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments provided for one-third reservation of seats in local bodies for women, this has not translated effectively to state and national levels. As of 2024, women hold just 14% of seats in the Lok Sabha, far below the global average of 26.5%. The Women’s Reservation Bill, which proposes reserving 33% of all seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies for women, has been in legislative limbo for years.

One striking example of this challenge is the recent Bihar assembly elections, where female representation barely crossed 10%. Despite the state’s long history of grassroots women leaders in Panchayati Raj institutions, their influence does not extend to the state assembly or parliament. The glass ceiling remains intact, and the political arena continues to be dominated by men.

Education: Progress with caveats

While there has been significant progress in girls' education in India, the dropout rates at secondary and higher levels remain concerning. In rural areas, many girls still leave school due to early marriage, poverty, or the lack of proper sanitation facilities. The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023 highlighted that the female dropout rate at the secondary level is nearly 15% higher than that of boys, with economic factors being the primary reason.

As we commemorate Women's Equality Day in 2024, it's vital to recognise that while legal frameworks and policies are essential, they are not enough. The challenges Indian women face today are deeply intertwined with cultural and societal norms that require a collective shift in mindset. Education, economic empowerment, and stringent enforcement of laws are crucial, but so is the need for a broader societal change that truly values gender equality. Only then can we hope to see a day when Women's Equality Day is not just a celebration of progress, but a reflection of a fully equal society.

1. Sojourner Truth's Image as Activism

None

A moving speaker, Truth traveled the country from the mid-1840s until her death in 1883, advocating for equal rights. She paid for the first printing of her Narrative of Sojourner Truth (written with friends) by selling her photographs at rallies and advertising them in antislavery publications. She also purchased a home in Battle Creek, Michigan, with the proceeds from these sales and her speaking engagements.

The great Black statesman Frederick Douglass dismissed her as “uncultured” because of her illiteracy, but her supporters knew better. Truth believed that although she could not read a book, she could read people. Her empathy, coupled with her religious convictions, gave her a dynamism that would capture the public imagination well beyond her lifetime, continuing to inspire others to help to end racial and gender oppression. —Rhea L. Combs

2. The Suffrage Wagon

None

Yet women fighting for change found allies in their quest for greater equality. By the mid-nineteenth century, women across the country were forming suffrage associations and reaching for voting rights, hoping that the ballot would be a powerful weapon in the fight for civil and cultural equality.

In the 1870s, Stone began using an unpainted wagon as a podium at speaking engagements and to distribute her newspaper, Woman’s Journal . In 1913, suffragist and labor activist Elisabeth Freeman took it on a well-publicized trip from New York to Boston, hauling a hurdy-gurdy organ to draw crowds. It was still used for suffrage publicity, but by then the wagon had been painted. It made the trip to Boston covered in slogans advertising Woman’s Journal and calling for equal pay, just labor laws, and the vote for women of all classes. —Lisa Kathleen Graddy

3. Challenging Gender Boundaries on Stage

None

Playing Wolsey broke with a century of theatrical precedent. Women (including Cushman) had long played tragic male characters such as Romeo and Hamlet, donning tights that exposed legs normally concealed under dresses. By choosing to portray Henry VIII’s ambitious and machinating chief minister, Cushman not only broadened the scope of characters available to women but also picked one whose loose-fitting robes put the emphasis on her acting rather than her body.

At a time before such words as lesbian, queer, and transgender came into use, most Americans thought that not having relationships with men made Cushman chaste and pure. Cushman herself strove to confirm this view and ordered her partners and lovers to burn her letters to preserve her public image. But in the decades after her death in 1876, as homosexuality among women became more recognized—and ridiculed—she fell out of public favor and was largely forgotten. Only in recent years has her story been recovered by scholars and activists, who see Cushman as an early advocate for a woman’s right to be whoever she wants to be—on and off the stage. —Kenneth Cohen

4. The "Summer of the Women" 1996 Olympics

These female athletes were among the generation raised after Title IX, a law designed to eliminate gender inequality in college education and athletics. When Title IX passed in 1972, only 15 percent of college athletes were women; by 1996, that number had soared above 40 percent.

The women’s basketball team swept the Olympic tournament, claiming gold and serving as a springboard for a professional women’s league. The following year, Rebecca Lobo helped found the new Women’s National Basketball Association.

Inspiring generations, the 1996 women of Team USA sparked public conversation surrounding women’s expanding role in sports, paving the way for future generations of female athletes and Olympians. —Eric W. Jentsch

5. A Woman's Seat at the Political Table

None

Before World War II, most women representatives and senators gained their seats as widows appointed to complete their husbands’ terms. Some declined to leave when their “placeholder” term expired and then went on to win elections in their own right and continue their careers as legislators. In the cabinet, whose members are nominated by the president, things moved more slowly. But in 1933, Frances Perkins (1882–1965) became the first woman in a presidential cabinet when Franklin D. Roosevelt named her secretary of labor.

A graduate of Mount Holyoke College, Perkins lived in settlement houses, trained as a social worker, and worked as a consumer lobbyist. After witnessing New York’s Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, in which 146 workers—largely immigrant women and girls—died, she became a suffrage advocate and tackled issues surrounding labor, women, and children. In 1929, then-Governor Roosevelt named Perkins head of New York State’s Department of Labor; four years later, she would begin a stint as the longest-serving secretary of labor in history. Twenty years passed before a second woman was named a cabinet secretary, with Oveta Culp Hobby appointed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower to head the newly formed Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. It took more than two decades longer for two or more women to serve in a cabinet at the same time.

In the postwar years, women increasingly ran for office rather than inheriting it, and the women of the Capitol grew in legislative experience and seniority. In the 1960s and 1970s, this core of women was joined by activists and politicians from the women’s and civil rights movements.

Representative Patsy Mink of Hawai‘i, the first woman of color elected to the House of Representatives, was the primary author of Title IX, which in 1972 amended the 1964 Civil Rights Act to include women. Following the example of the Congressional Black Caucus formed in 1971, women members of Congress elected from different parties and representing different constituencies and governing philosophies united in 1977 to form the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues to discuss topics of mutual interest.

Although more women are at the table, their numbers are still not equal to men’s. Doubtless, more women will follow the advice of Representative Shirley Chisholm: “If you wait for a man to give you a seat, you’ll never have one! If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring in a folding chair.” —E. Claire Jerry and Lisa Kathleen Graddy

At World Women's Forum, UN deputy chief urges action on gender equality

The Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed delivers remarks at the 2024 World Women’s Forum in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General called for stronger efforts in women’s empowerment, gender equality, and climate action in remarks to the World Women's Forum in Mongolia this week.

Held on 22-23 August under the theme Towards a Green Future , the Forum focused on advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those emphasizing gender equality.

Speaking on Thursday, Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed emphasized the urgency of accelerating progress on the SDGs, as the deadline is less than six years away.

She highlighted that women’s leadership is essential for better community services and effective climate action but acknowledged that “time is not on our side.”

“Despite our awareness of the urgency and the progress we’ve made, we find ourselves far from the finishing line ,” Ms. Mohammed said. “At this pace, that mission will be passed down to generations yet to come,” she continued.

Supporting women’s leadership

In her opening remarks, Ms. Mohammed outlined action plans to advance equality, starting with supporting women's leadership in environmental and climate action.

She noted that women’s lives are “intricately connected” to natural resources, playing a vital role in food security. She stressed the need to support women environmental rights defenders, those working in agriculture, and others in similar roles, while addressing the triple planetary crisis, referring to climate change, pollution and biodiversity loss.

“Increasing global commitments to gender equality and women’s empowerment across all areas of environmental action must also be a common thread throughout our multilateral cooperation,” she said.

Additionally, Ms. Mohammed called for stronger support in increasing educational opportunities for girls and the need to eradicate gender-based violence.

“The rights of women and girls must be protected,” she said. “ We must shape a world where they can achieve their agency and live free from fear .”

Prioritising women’s rights

As world leaders prepare for the upcoming Summit of the Future in September, and the 2025 review of the Beijing+30 review   – a global assessment of gender and women’s equality – Ms. Mohammed stressed the need to embed gender equality and women’s empowerment in every aspect of the SDGs.

“We need policies that prioritise women's rights, especially young, indigenous and rural women , and fully include their knowledge and expertise,” she said.

As Ms. Mohammed continuously encouraged women’s rights empowerment and support, she called for the remembrance of women and girls in conflict zones like Afghanistan, Gaza and Sudan, who have been left behind.

“Let’s keep the momentum to also shine a light on their burdens, on their challenges and the atrocities they face,” she said.

Ms. Mohammed called for the world to be shaped in a way where girls and women can freely pursue their dreams, contribute to society and live peacefully.

“Together, in solidarity, I believe we can make this vision a reality ,” Ms. Mohammed said.

The UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed interacts with a child in Mongolia.

Meetings and visits

On her final day in Mongolia, the Deputy Secretary-General met with the country’s Prime Minister, Oyun-Erdene Luvsannamsrai.

After the closing ceremony of the World Women’s Forum, she visited a service centre for survivors of gender-based violence run by the UN agency for sexual and reproductive health agency, UNFPA .

Ms. Mohammed expressed her appreciation for the dedication, commitment, and tireless efforts of the service providers, and for their advocacy against such violence.

She also visited a herder family in their traditional home to learn about their livelihood and the impact of climate change and modernization on their nomadic way of life.

Anti-trans violence is coming for cisgender women of color, advocates say

Imane Khelif’s treatment at the Paris Olympics brought gender policing to a global stage. It's not the first instance — or the last.

Imane Khelif, a long-time competitor in women’s boxing, had come to Paris to represent Algeria at the Olympics for the second time. Algerians traveled hundreds of miles to support her. Algerian newspapers heralded her as a “heroine.” She beat one opponent after the next, winning gold in the women’s welterweight tournament.

But since the first time she entered the ring in Paris, Khelif’s body, mannerisms, identity and athleticism became the focus of scrutiny by politicians, billionaires and news outlets on a global scale. A narrative soon took hold: Khelif was labeled a transgender woman.

This wasn’t true — but that didn’t matter. Her actions and reactions were weaponized against her. Khelif had won her matches too easily. When her first opponent quit after 46 seconds and cried after Khelif punched her, Khelif didn’t look remorseful enough. To detractors, this boxer from Algeria, who had pursued a sport she loved since she was 6 years old , didn’t fit the stereotypical idea of what a woman is supposed to be.

The anti-transgender hatred directed at Khelif — and the narrow beliefs about femininity being projected onto her — are part of how anti-trans rhetoric fuels violence towards women of color, including cisgender women, experts and transgender athletes told The 19th.

“Really what we’re talking about is the spectacle of surveillance on women of color’s bodies, especially when they’re winning and performing in ways that exceed the expectations of white women,” said Treva B. Lindsey, a professor of women’s, gender and sexuality studies at Ohio State University.

Gender policing, or enforcing traditional gender norms and roles through the punishment of those who don’t conform, ignores cultural variations, spectrums of self-expression, gender fluidity and nonbinary identities, said Toni Newman, director of the coalition for justice and equality across movements at the National Minority AIDS Council. And these variations are not exclusive to transgender people. Now, attacks levied against transgender women are being used to attack cisgender women, she said.

“You’re policing now not only transgender people who transition, but you’re policing straight people,” Newman said. “So now we’re going to start policing masculine women and now we’re going to police feminine men? I mean, where are we going with this?”

For years, Republican state legislators and conservative media have accused transgender girls in schools of endangering cisgender girls’ safety and taking away their athletic opportunities when they play women’s sports. Despite lawmakers’ inability to provide evidence to back up these claims, 25 states now ban trans students from playing in sports consistent with their gender identity. This legislation has also affected cisgender students, fueling speculation about whether women and girls playing sports look feminine enough.

In February, a Utah State Board of Education member falsely claimed that a local girl playing for her high school’s basketball team was transgender. The teenager quickly faced a flood of threats and harassment . The school board member, Natalie Cline — who was censured by the state legislature — apologized , saying that the current political environment and “push to normalize transgenderism” had led her to publicly speculate about the student’s gender identity based on her physical appearance.

“Nobody wants to question if a kid is the gender they say they are. We want to protect children, not hurt them,” Cline wrote on Facebook.

At the Olympics, Khelif would face the same scrutiny on a much larger scale.

Former President Donald Trump, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, billionaire Elon Musk and author J.K. Rowling all fueled the attacks against Khelif by speculating about her identity and using the moment to amplify transphobic ideas around keeping men out of women’s sports. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) urged for rationality. But that didn’t stop the speculation or insults.

Khelif’s next opponent, Hungary’s Anna Luca Hamori, shared a meme on her Instagram account of a slender woman in a boxing ring staring down a large male figure with demonic horns ahead of their bout. Khelif defeated Hamori in the quarterfinals. After the fight, the athletes shook hands. Hamori walked away without answering reporters’ questions about her Instagram post.

Anti-trans rhetoric demands adherence to a strict gender binary and anyone whose looks and behavior place them outside that rigid binary becomes a threat to the ideals of patriarchy and white supremacy, Lindsey said. Ultimately, women of color are the ones most at risk of being targeted for not adhering to fragile notions of gender and unrealistic expectations of femininity, she said. And when these non-conforming women win, that triggers intense backlash.

To Angel Joy Flores, a transfemme personal trainer and content creator living in Seattle, gender policing would persist even if trans women weren’t brought into the conversation. The issue, she said, is that trans women are an easy scapegoat to amplify an effort to police all women’s bodies. And as anti-trans rhetoric surges and emboldens misogyny, that effort has the potential to move beyond sports.

“How long until we start to see right-wing politicians become emboldened to start questioning their opponents’ sex and gender?” Flores said in a text message. “How long until that spreads to schools, requiring girls to prove their girlhood to be allowed into bathrooms and certain classrooms?”

To counter the global vitriol, Khelif’s father felt compelled to show news outlets her birth certificate , where Khelif is listed as female in a country that does not allow trans people to update their personal documents. The IOC, for its part, has been adamant : Khelif is a target of misinformation and politically motivated hate speech.

Khelif has filed a criminal complaint in France against X, citing Rowling and Musk’s actions as part of widespread cyber-harassment.

Speculation about her identity has largely been based on her sudden disqualification from the 2023 IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships. The organization, which was banished from the Olympics last year, claims that she failed unspecified gender eligibility tests. What is known about those tests is that they did not include a testosterone examination, according to the IBA. Khelif — along with Lin Yu-ting, a featherweight boxer from Taiwan, who has also been falsely accused of being transgender — were instead subjected to multiple blood tests .

The IBA has not disclosed details about these tests, citing private medical information.

“This woman has competed for a very, very long time in women’s sport against many opponents,” Mark Adams, a spokesperson for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), told reporters at another press conference. “I think if you start working on all suspicions, then we end up very much heading towards a gender testing regime, which is not good for anybody.”

A 2020 report by Human Rights Watch , detailing nearly 80 years of sex determination testing in sports, found that such tests enforced by other athletics governing bodies have been used to police women of color across the globe. Frequently, those women have what medical professionals call intersex traits — relatively common sex characteristics that fall outside the binary definitions of male or female. Many people live their lives with no awareness of these traits.

Caster Semenya, the South African middle-distance runner and two-time Olympic champion, was subjected to medical tests at 18 years old by athletic authorities because of the way she looked. Semenya, a woman, was born with high levels of testosterone and XY chromosomes. Running helped her financially support her family. Still, she was told that she would have to undergo surgery or take testosterone-lowering drugs.

Semenya chose to take the medication, but it made her sick. Yet to keep on competing as a runner, she had to take it for more than six years.

“I know that some other athletes with conditions similar to mine have been offered this solution. Many are women of color and are from impoverished backgrounds. They see running as their only hope of making a life for themselves and their families. They are intimidated by a system they cannot understand, and they don’t have resources to fight for themselves,” Semenya wrote in a 2023 New York Times essay .

The people being tested and interrogated over their gender through sex eligibility testing are overwhelmingly women of color, Lindsey said. Black women in the United States and women of color from the global South are particularly targeted — and, advocates say, that obsession with narrowly defining womanhood is fueled by anti-transgender animus.

For Nick Pham, a trail runner in Portland, seeing the world turn against Khelif was scary to watch as a nonbinary person. Speculations around Khelif’s identity seemed intent on drawing a clear line in the sand between what makes a man and what makes a woman, reinforcing a gender binary that refuses to acknowledge Pham’s existence.

“This is the kind of thing that makes people afraid to be themselves,” they said.

When responding to the global outcry against her, Khelif indicated that the hostility she has faced is hostility to women everywhere.

“Yes, this issue involves the dignity and honor of every woman and female,” she told an Algerian broadcaster after beating Hamori, according to the Associated Press . “The Arab population has known me for years and has seen me box in the IBA that wronged me (and) treated me unfairly, but I have God on my side.”

The worldwide pressure had greatly affected her. In separate remarks, she said she had been subjected to the kind of treatment that “harms human dignity” and called for a stop to bullying athletes, saying: “It can destroy people, it can kill people’s thoughts, spirit and mind. It can divide people.”

In the ring, after her win against Hamori, Khelif was the one in tears — smiling, in victory and in joy.

Human Rights Careers

5 Powerful Essays Advocating for Gender Equality

Gender equality – which becomes reality when all genders are treated fairly and allowed equal opportunities –  is a complicated human rights issue for every country in the world. Recent statistics are sobering. According to the World Economic Forum, it will take 108 years to achieve gender parity . The biggest gaps are found in political empowerment and economics. Also, there are currently just six countries that give women and men equal legal work rights. Generally, women are only given ¾ of the rights given to men. To learn more about how gender equality is measured, how it affects both women and men, and what can be done, here are five essays making a fair point.

“Countries With Less Gender Equity Have More Women In STEM — Huh?” – Adam Mastroianni and Dakota McCoy

This essay from two Harvard PhD candidates (Mastroianni in psychology and McCoy in biology) takes a closer look at a recent study that showed that in countries with lower gender equity, more women are in STEM. The study’s researchers suggested that this is because women are actually especially interested in STEM fields, and because they are given more choice in Western countries, they go with different careers. Mastroianni and McCoy disagree.

They argue the research actually shows that cultural attitudes and discrimination are impacting women’s interests, and that bias and discrimination is present even in countries with better gender equality. The problem may lie in the Gender Gap Index (GGI), which tracks factors like wage disparity and government representation. To learn why there’s more women in STEM from countries with less gender equality, a more nuanced and complex approach is needed.

“Men’s health is better, too, in countries with more gender equality” – Liz Plank

When it comes to discussions about gender equality, it isn’t uncommon for someone in the room to say, “What about the men?” Achieving gender equality has been difficult because of the underlying belief that giving women more rights and freedom somehow takes rights away from men. The reality, however, is that gender equality is good for everyone. In Liz Plank’s essay, which is an adaption from her book For the Love of Men: A Vision for Mindful Masculinity, she explores how in Iceland, the #1 ranked country for gender equality, men live longer. Plank lays out the research for why this is, revealing that men who hold “traditional” ideas about masculinity are more likely to die by suicide and suffer worse health. Anxiety about being the only financial provider plays a big role in this, so in countries where women are allowed education and equal earning power, men don’t shoulder the burden alone.

Liz Plank is an author and award-winning journalist with Vox, where she works as a senior producer and political correspondent. In 2015, Forbes named her one of their “30 Under 30” in the Media category. She’s focused on feminist issues throughout her career.

“China’s #MeToo Moment” –  Jiayang Fan

Some of the most visible examples of gender inequality and discrimination comes from “Me Too” stories. Women are coming forward in huge numbers relating how they’ve been harassed and abused by men who have power over them. Most of the time, established systems protect these men from accountability. In this article from Jiayang Fan, a New Yorker staff writer, we get a look at what’s happening in China.

The essay opens with a story from a PhD student inspired by the United States’ Me Too movement to open up about her experience with an academic adviser. Her story led to more accusations against the adviser, and he was eventually dismissed. This is a rare victory, because as Fan says, China employs a more rigid system of patriarchy and hierarchy. There aren’t clear definitions or laws surrounding sexual harassment. Activists are charting unfamiliar territory, which this essay explores.

“Men built this system. No wonder gender equality remains as far off as ever.” – Ellie Mae O’Hagan

Freelance journalist Ellie Mae O’Hagan (whose book The New Normal is scheduled for a May 2020 release) is discouraged that gender equality is so many years away. She argues that it’s because the global system of power at its core is broken.  Even when women are in power, which is proportionally rare on a global scale, they deal with a system built by the patriarchy. O’Hagan’s essay lays out ideas for how to fix what’s fundamentally flawed, so gender equality can become a reality.

Ideas include investing in welfare; reducing gender-based violence (which is mostly men committing violence against women); and strengthening trade unions and improving work conditions. With a system that’s not designed to put women down, the world can finally achieve gender equality.

“Invisibility of Race in Gender Pay Gap Discussions” – Bonnie Chu

The gender pay gap has been a pressing issue for many years in the United States, but most discussions miss the factor of race. In this concise essay, Senior Contributor Bonnie Chu examines the reality, writing that within the gender pay gap, there’s other gaps when it comes to black, Native American, and Latina women. Asian-American women, on the other hand, are paid 85 cents for every dollar. This data is extremely important and should be present in discussions about the gender pay gap. It reminds us that when it comes to gender equality, there’s other factors at play, like racism.

Bonnie Chu is a gender equality advocate and a Forbes 30 Under 30 social entrepreneur. She’s the founder and CEO of Lensational, which empowers women through photography, and the Managing Director of The Social Investment Consultancy.

In a society, everyone has the right to lead his/her life accordingly without any discrimination. When this state is achieved where all individuals are considered to be equal irrespective of their caste, gender, colour, profession, and status, we call it equality. Equality can also be defined as the situation where every individual has the same rights and equal opportunity to grow and prosper.

Every individual of society dreams for equal rights and access to resources available at their disposal, but there is a lot of discrimination. This discrimination can be due to cultural differences, geographical differences, the colour of the individual, social status and even gender. The most prevalent discrimination is gender inequality. It is not a localised issue and is limited to only certain spheres of life but is prevalent across the globe. Even in progressive societies and top organisations, we can see many examples of gender bias.

Gender equality can only be achieved when both male and female individuals are treated similarly. But discrimination is a social menace that creates division. We stop being together and stand together to tackle our problems. This social stigma has been creeping into the underbelly of all of society for many centuries. This has also been witnessed in gender-based cases. Gender inequality is the thing of the past as both men and women are creating history in all segments together.

Gender Equality builds a Nation

In this century, women and men enjoy the same privileges. The perception is changing slowly but steadily. People are now becoming more aware of their rights and what they can do in a free society. It has been found that when women and men hold the same position and participate equally, society progresses exclusively and creates a landmark. When a community reaches gender equality, everyone enjoys the same privileges and gets similar scopes in education, health, occupation, and political aspect. Even in the family, when both male and female members are treated in the same way, it is the best place to grow, learn, and add great value.

A nation needs to value every gender equally to progress at the right place. A society attains better development in all aspects when both genders are entitled to similar opportunities. Equal rights in decision making, health, politics, infrastructure, profession, etc will surely advance our society to a new level. The social stigma of women staying inside the house has changed. Nowadays, girls are equally competing with boys in school. They are also creating landmark development in their respective profession. Women are now seeking economic independence before they get married. It gives them the confidence to stand against oppression and make better decisions for themselves.

The age-old social structure dictated that women need to stay inside the home taking care of all when men go out to earn bread and butter. This has been practised for ages when the world outside was not safe. Now that the time has changed and we have successfully made our environment quite safer, women can step forward, get educated, pursue their passion, bring economic balance in their families, and share the weight of a family with men. This, in a cumulative way, will also make a country’s economy progress faster and better.

Methods to measure Gender Equality

Gender equality can be measured and a country’s growth can be traced by using the following methods.

Gender Development Index (GDI) is a gender-based calculation done similar to the Human Development Index.

Gender Empowerment Measure (GEM) is a detailed calculation method of the percentage of female members in decision-making roles.

Gender Equity Index (GEI) considers economic participation, education, and empowerment.

Global Gender Gap Index assesses the level of gender inequality present on the basis of four criteria: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, political empowerment, health and survival .

According to the Gender Gap Index (GGI), India ranks 140 among 156 participating countries. This denotes that the performance of India has fallen from the previous years, denoting negative growth in terms of closing the gender gap. In the current environment where equality and equal opportunities are considered supreme, this makes India be at a significant disadvantage.

Roadblocks to Gender Equality

Indian society is still wrecked by such stigmas that dictate that women are meant to manage the home and stay indoors. This is being done for ages, leading to neglect of women in areas like education, health, wealth, and socio-economic fields.

In addition to that, the dowry system is further crippling society. This ill practice had led to numerous female feticides. It has created a notion that girls are a burden on a family, which is one of the primary reasons a girl child cannot continue her education. Even if they excel in education and become independent, most of them are forced to quit their job as their income is considered a backup source, which is not fair. New-age women are not only independent, but they are confident too. The only thing they demand from society is support, which we should provide them.

Along with dowry, there is one more burning issue that has a profound impact on women's growth. It is prevalent in all kinds of society and is known as violence. Violence against women is present in one or another form in public and private spaces. Sometimes, violence is accompanied by other burning issues such as exploitation, harassment, and trafficking, making the world unsafe for women. We must take steps to stop this and ensure a safe and healthy place for women.

Poverty is also one of the major roadblocks towards gender equality. It has led to other malpractices such as child marriage, sale of children, trafficking and child labour, to name a few. Providing equal job opportunities and upliftment of people below the poverty line can help bring some checks onto this.

Initiative Towards Gender Equality

Any kind of discrimination acts as a roadblock in any nation’s growth, and a nation can only prosper when all its citizens have equal rights. Most of the developed countries has comparatively less gender discrimination and provide equal opportunity to both genders. Even the Indian government is taking multiple initiatives to cut down gender discrimination.

They have initiated a social campaign called “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana” to encourage the education of girl children. Besides this, the government runs multiple other schemes, such as the Women Helpline Scheme, UJJAWALA, National Mission for Empowerment of Women, etc., to generate awareness among the people. Moreover, as responsible citizens, it is our responsibility to spread knowledge on gender discrimination to create a beautiful world for wome n [1] [2] .

FAQs on Gender Equality Essay

1. What Makes Women Unequal to Men?

The social stigmas and beliefs that have been running deeply in the veins of all families make women unequal to men. Women are considered to be a burden by many families and are not provided with the same rights men enjoy in society. We are ill-informed regarding women’s rights and tend to continue age-old practices. This is made worse with social menaces such as the dowry system, child labor, child marriage, etc. Women can gather knowledge, get educated, and compete with men. This is sometimes quite threatening to the false patriarchal society.

2. How can We Promote Gender Equality?

Education is the prime measure to be taken to make society free from such menaces. When we teach our new generation regarding the best social practices and gender equal rights, we can eradicate such menaces aptly. Our society is ill-informed regarding gender equality and rights. Many policies have been designed and implemented by the government. As our country holds the second position in terms of population, it is hard to tackle these gender-based problems. It can only be erased from the deepest point by using education as the prime weapon.

3. Why should Women be Equal to Men?

Women might not be similar to men in terms of physical strength and physiological traits. Both are differently built biologically but they have the same brain and organs to function. Women these days are creating milestones that are changing society. They have traveled to space, running companies, creating history, and making everyone proud. Women are showing their capabilities in every phase and hence, they should be equal to men in all aspects.

4. Mention a few initiatives started by the Indian Government to enable gender equality.

The Indian government has initiated a social campaign called “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana” to encourage girls’ education. Besides this, the government runs multiple other schemes, such as the  Women Helpline Scheme, UJJAWALA, National Mission for Empowerment of Women, etc., to generate awareness among the people.

The Imperative of Gender Equality

Gender equality is not just about fairness but also about harnessing the untapped potential of half the world’s population. It’s about acknowledging the fact that men and women, despite their biological differences, are equally capable of contributing to society. The exclusion or marginalization of any gender hinders societal progress.

Challenges to Gender Equality

Despite strides made, gender inequality persists. Discriminatory laws, gender stereotypes, and institutional biases continue to impede gender equality. Women, for instance, often face wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership positions, and disproportionate burden of unpaid care work.

The Path to Gender Equality

Achieving gender equality requires systemic changes. It starts with education, promoting gender-sensitive curricula to dismantle harmful stereotypes. Legal reforms are also crucial for ensuring equal rights and opportunities. Additionally, institutions must foster an environment that promotes gender diversity and inclusion.

Gender equality is not a women’s issue, but a human issue. It affects us all. The journey towards gender equality is complex and challenging, but it’s a journey worth taking. As we strive for a more equitable world, we must remember that every step, no matter how small, brings us closer to this goal.

Gender equality, also known as sexual equality or equality of the sexes, is the state of equal ease of access to resources and opportunities, irrespective of gender. It is a critical aspect of a just and democratic society, and its importance cannot be overstated. This essay explores the concept of gender equality, its implications, and the role of society in achieving it.

The Concept of Gender Equality

Despite the clear benefits of gender equality, numerous challenges persist. Socio-cultural norms and beliefs often uphold gender inequality, making it difficult to change attitudes and behaviors. Moreover, institutional structures and practices can reinforce gender disparities. For instance, women are often underrepresented in leadership positions, and they are more likely to experience poverty and violence.

In conclusion, gender equality is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone of a just and democratic society. It has vast implications for economic growth, social wellbeing, and political effectiveness. While challenges persist, through education, legal reform, and individual action, we can work towards a more equal and just society. Gender equality is the belief that men and women should be treated and perceived as equals in society, including all areas such as education, employment, and in decision-making positions. It is a fundamental human right and a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world.

Despite significant progress in advancing gender equality, women and girls continue to face barriers and discrimination in many areas of society. This includes the gender pay gap, difficult access to education and employment opportunities, and limited representation in leadership positions. 200 Words Essay On Gender Equality

Gender equality is the equal treatment and perception of individuals of all genders in society.

Importance Of Gender Equality

Gender equality is important because it is a fundamental human right and is necessary for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable society. When everyone, regardless of their gender, is treated fairly and has equal opportunities, it can lead to greater prosperity and happiness for all.

Additionally, gender equality can have a positive impact on economic growth and development. When women and girls are able to fully participate and get proper education and employment opportunities, it can lead to increased productivity and innovation. It can also contribute to more balanced and representative decision-making, which can lead to more effective and fair policies and practices.

Furthermore, gender equality is essential for promoting social justice and fairness. When women and girls are marginalized and discriminated against, it can lead to a range of negative outcomes, including poverty, poor health, and reduced opportunities for personal and professional development. Overall, the promotion of gender equality is important for creating a more equal, fair, and just society for all.

Encouraging Gender Equality

500 Words Essay On Gender Equality

Everyone in the country has the same fundamental freedom to pursue happiness whichever way they see fit. It's possible if people of various backgrounds (race, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, gender) are treated with respect and dignity. Gender disparity is the most noticeable kind of prejudice. Gender discrimination persists even in many modern nations and calls for immediate action. When men and women are given the same opportunities, we will achieve gender equality. Furthermore, this essay will outline the many issues women encounter due to gender discrimination.

Prevalence Of Gender Inequality

Gender inequality is prevalent in many sectors and areas of society. Some examples include:

Education: Women and girls may face barriers to accessing education, such as lack of resources, cultural or societal barriers, and discrimination.

Employment: Women and girls may face discrimination in the workplace, including lower pay for the same work as men, lack of promotion opportunities, and limited representation in leadership positions.

Health care: Women and girls may face discrimination and inadequate access to quality health care, particularly in areas related to reproductive and sexual health.

Political representation: Women are often underrepresented in political leadership positions and decision-making processes.

Domestic violence: Women and girls may face higher rates of domestic violence and abuse, and may lack adequate protection and support from the justice system.

Media and advertising: Women and girls are often portrayed in stereotypical and objectifying ways in the media and advertising, which can reinforce harmful gender norms and stereotypes.

Gender inequality is a widespread issue that affects many areas of society, and it is important to work towards promoting gender equality in all sectors.

How India Can Achieve Gender Equality

Achieving gender equality in India will require a multi-faceted approach that involves addressing social norms and stereotypes, strengthening laws and policies, increasing women's representation in leadership positions, promoting women's economic empowerment, and improving access to health care.

Address social norms and stereotypes: It is important to challenge and change harmful gender norms and stereotypes that contribute to gender inequality. This can be done through education campaigns and programs that promote gender equality and challenge traditional gender roles.

Strengthen laws and policies: India can work to strengthen laws and policies that protect and advance the rights of women and girls, such as laws against domestic violence and discrimination, and policies that promote equal pay for equal work and access to education and employment.

Increase women's representation in leadership positions: India can work to increase the representation of women in leadership positions, including in politics, business, and other sectors, to ensure that women have a stronger voice in decision-making processes.

Promote women's economic empowerment: Providing women with access to education, employment, and financial resources can help to empower them and enable them to fully participate in society.

Improve access to health care: Ensuring that women and girls have access to quality health care, including reproductive and sexual health care, is essential for promoting gender equality.

My Experience

I remember one time when I was working as an intern at a small consulting firm. At the end of my internship, I was offered a full-time position. However, when I received the offer letter, I noticed that my male colleagues who were also being offered full-time positions had been offered a higher salary than me, even though we had all performed the same job duties during our internships.

I was frustrated and felt that I was being treated unfairly because of my gender. I decided to bring this issue to the attention of my supervisor, and after some negotiation, I was able to secure a salary that was equal to that of my male colleagues.

This experience taught me the importance of advocating for myself and not accepting inequality, and it also made me more aware of the ways in which gender bias can manifest in the workplace. I believe that it is important for individuals to speak up and take action when they see instances of gender inequality, and for organizations to make a conscious effort to promote gender equality and fairness in all aspects of their operations.

Gender Equality Has Been an

This does not mean, however, that money is not important, because having enough money for female recruitment and scholarships allows many more women to excel at sports programs at many different colleges and universities. Some female coaches have also encountered difficulties when they speak out about perceived wrongdoing when it comes to the distribution of money (Fish, D1). Even though Title IX required gender equity, there are many places where this has not happened and women are still concerned with punishment if they complain. Since Title IX has not been enforced in many schools across the country this has made many people wonder whether there will ever be equity when it comes to gender, race, and other issues, and this problem is not just for colleges and universities. It also extends to high schools and middle schools as well, where children should be taught that everyone is equal and deserves to…...

Gender Equality in the Community

Gender equality is not just a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous, and sustainable world. The concept of gender equality entails equal access to opportunities and resources for individuals regardless of their gender, and it challenges the stereotypes and norms that perpetuate discrimination and inequality. In my community, much like in many parts of the world, the pursuit of gender equality is ongoing, characterized by triumphs in some areas and persistent challenges in others. For instance, education has been a significant battleground for gender equality, showing promising strides toward parity. In my community, both male and female students are now equally represented in primary and secondary education, thanks in part to policies and programs aimed at encouraging girls education and retention (UNESCO, 2018). School curricula have been adapted to remove gender biases, and scholarships have been specifically tailored to support girls who are at risk of…...

Gender Equality in the United States Netherlands and Indonesia

This paper will examine variations in gender inequality based on educational levels (and, subsequently, approximately on socioeconomic status) in case of the following three countries: America, Indonesia and the Netherlands, which are characterized by highly disparate female employment, societal welfare and family policies and circumstance. For every country, female hourly pay rates and employment rates for distinct educational levels are compared, besides work hours and employment rates for males with the same educational level. It is broadly hypothesized female employment increases with higher educational qualification; increased employment of qualified females results in improved gender equality in terms of pay, housework and job (Evertsson, England and Reci). How is employment anticipated to differ with educational level among females? The conflicting factors of income and opportunity cost have been put forward by economic theory. Better educated females can earn more. Therefore, for such women, opportunity costs linked to unemployment (i.e., the monetary loss…...

Gender Equality in Japan

Japanese omen Gender Inequality in Japan Social change is often slow. This is especially true concerning the shift of traditional gender roles in any society. Historically, however, once these roles do begin to change, women in specific seem to bear the brunt of the stress that these changes necessarily cause. Indeed, a vacuum seems to form where old societal rules once stood, and it is often women that find themselves unsure, unsupported, and floundering in the new, uncertain reality. In specific, the rapid changes that have occurred in Japanese society are an excellent example of this phenomenon, for changes in the roles of Japanese women -- where independent dreams, work, and identities are becoming more and more acceptable in theory, nonetheless still leave them charged with the full and untempered gender burdens of centuries past -- burdens of the "good wife," mother, and woman. In short, they are left with an impossible…...

Gender Equality in My Community

A Path Toward Progress In the tapestry of our community, gender equality is an intricate thread that weaves together the fabric of social justice and individual empowerment. As citizens, we have a collective responsibility to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their biological sex, have equal opportunities and rights in our society (World Economic Forum, 2021). One aspect of gender equality in my community is the equal access to education for boys and girls. This is crucial for breaking down gender stereotypes and ensuring that individuals have the skills and knowledge to succeed in life. In schools, girls and boys are encouraged to pursue subjects that traditionally may have been seen as appropriate for only one gender (United Nations, 2015). This approach fosters a culture of respect and equality, while also preparing our youth for a diverse and competitive world. Equally important is the economic empowerment of women. In our community, there are…...

Gender Equality and Inequality in Parenting

Gendered Power and Parenting Parenting styles can be incredibly diverse and come in many different ways. Many of us who are parents recognize a lot of the decisions we make as reflections of our own parents. For better or worse, our parenting styles have been greatly influenced by our parents, our culture, and our society. This paper aims to focus on some of the scholarly work that has been done in order to analyze different parenting styles, and also to observe the influences of the parental behavior on the child. How do the article journals compare and contrast to the class readings? Two separate child-care models were discussed in the first article. There is the more traditional approach in which the mother takes on the majority of the child-care responsibility while the father steps back and focuses on being a provider. The second model shows an equal collaboration between both partners in child-raising.…...

Global Issue Women's Rights and Gender Equality

Women's ights Although women have seen substantial progress as a group in the United States due to the women's rights movement, globally women still struggle to attain parity with men, particularly in the resource-poor developing world. Although women have assumed politically prominent leadership positions in the U.S., Germany, Canada, and other major national powerhouses, overall, females have struggled to attain parity with men in the world community as a whole. Globally, women make up "just 17% of parliamentarians" and "over the past 25 years only 1 in 40 women were peace agreement signatories" (Inequality statistics. 2014 Womankind Worldwide). There are significant health disparities regarding women's health: for example, "99% of maternal deaths occur in developing countries, with women continuing to die of pregnancy-related causes at the rate of one a minute" and while "women produce up to 80% of food in developing countries" they are "more likely to be hungry than…...

Standards of Gender Equality Are

(2003, p. 136) Other manifestations of kastom also indicate the concept's gender-related impact on a modern Pacific state. For example, Gregor and Tuzin (2001) cite the kastom communities of South Pentecost as a good example of how male-dominated societal practices have been used to maintain the status quo. Described by Gregor and Tuzin as "a tiny traditionalist enclave in a pervasively Christian country," these authors report that "there are still tenacious patterns of sexual segregation -- exclusivist men's houses, or mal, separate from the household im and commensal separation therein, with men's and women's cooking fires" in South Pentecost (2001, p. 178). These long-held beliefs that have assigned Vanuatun men the long end of the social stick have somewhat morphed the original kastom concept into a more modern version that remains centered on protected the status quo. In this regard, Gregor and Tuzin emphasize that, "Such gendered patterns of spatiality…...

Gender Equity in the Workplace

Gender Equality: The United States versus the United Kingdom Introduction The United Kingdom is often called the mother country of the United States. However, in some ways, the countries still differ, including in their measures of gender equality. Perhaps the most notable example can be found in the leadership of the United Kingdom. Unlike the US, the UK has already had a female head of state, in the form of Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May, and before that the UK was led by female monarchs as heads of state. The US has lacked such a female figurehead at such a prominent position, though Hillary Clinton did come close to securing the White House in 2016, and several female Congresswomen have risen to prominent positions, such as Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar. Presidential hopeful Joe Biden has said on record that he will pick a female VP as his running mate,…...

Womens Rights Movemement Today

Introduction The women's rights movement today is a powerful and influential force that continues to fight for gender equality and justice in all aspects of society. From reproductive rights to equal pay, women around the world are coming together to demand a more equitable and inclusive world. In recent years, the MeToo movement has shed light on the pervasive issue of sexual harassment and assault in various industries, leading to a call for accountability and systemic change. Women are no longer staying silent about their experiences and are demanding that perpetrators be held responsible for their actions. Additionally, the fight for reproductive rights and bodily autonomy remains a central issue for women's rights activists. Access to safe and legal abortion, contraception, and comprehensive healthcare services are essential for women to have control over their own bodies and to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Moreover, the gender pay gap continues to be…...

Guaranteeing Equal Pay for Women

More than 30 years ago, the United Nations (UN) held the first Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women known as CEDAW (Ramdas, Janus, 2011). Since that time, nearly every single member nation of the UN has shown its support for the convention by ratifying the treaty associated with the convention and resolving to work with other member nations to ensure that gender equality is reached across the entire globe. What is surprising, however, is that the U.S. is not one of the member nations to support CEDAW. It is one of only 6 of the 191 UN member nations to have yet to ratify CEDAW. For more than three decades, the U.S. has failed to sign on to the treaty, while so many other countries around the world have acted with conviction to end gender discrimination. The story in the U.S. is one where discrimination…...

Deeds Not Words Emotional Appeals and Argumentation Theory in the Suffragette Movement

The Women's Movement and the Right to Vote in England Who Led the Suffragettes in England in the 20th Century Introduction After release from prison for militant suffragette activities (breaking windows, burning buildings), Christabel Pankhurst gave England to know that she was in no way mollified or subdued. Her recording of a speech asserting that now is the time for women to have the right to vote was made and disseminated and will serve as the text for analysis in this paper. The women’s suffragette movement of the early 20th century was pivotal in signaling a change in the political tide; it ushered in a new era for women’s rights, representation and social and political status. It set the wheels in motion for the subsequent waves of feminism and woman’s empowerment that swept across the Atlantic to the US. The movement was helmed and steered by a group of women who understood that…...

Political Correctness and Society

society without families, the basic needs of people in that society would have to be addressed by the State or whatever authority or system of government is in place. Children would be cared for by administrators put in place by the governing authority, whether chosen on a local scale -- by the community -- or at a much larger centralized level. Training and values would be instilled through state-run education systems, and the child's need for love and care would have to be fulfilled through surrogacy, with peers and/or guardians put in place to provide the emotional and cognitive stimuli associated with love/care. Parents would meet the needs of their growing children by supplying them with basic necessities (food, shelter, clothing) but would have no say in education, love, affection, interaction, etc. -- normal actions associated with family life. The types of adults that this society would create would…...

Gender Equality in Arabia

Gender Equality in the Gulf Problem Description Historically, there has been a marked dearth of gender equality and women’s empowerment in the countries compromising the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), which include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. There are a number of reasons responsible for this situation. Firstly, these countries are all predominantly Muslim. Traditional gender roles (and stereotypes) largely exist in Islam and in countries which adhere to this faith as their national religion. Women are supposed to remain covered up in their raiment and relegated to domestic roles. The problem is that women account for approximately 50 percent of the population in the GCC countries, yet only constitute approximately 25 percent of the labor force in those countries (World Bank). Therefore, these countries are disadvantageously affected in certain aspects of economics and society because of the lack of female contributions in both of these areas. Literature…...

Gender-Based Sexual Inequality Gender Equality

" Conclusion: The gender-based sexual double standard is logically indefensible on any level. Piercing the thin veil of justifications offered supporting it requires little more than substitution of the identity of the subjects in any hypothetical or analogy based on the premise. Nevertheless, it persists throughout most of American culture, and sadly, its manifestations in the Western World are infinitely more benign than the cruelty it inspires elsewhere. Ultimately, its roots lie both in the usefulness of rationalization for justifying the truly immoral pursuit of sexual conquests by deception, and (likely) male psychological fears of sexual inadequacy whose details far exceed the scope of this essay. eferences Baker, ., Elliston, F. What was the meaning of freedom for enslaved people in the United States on the eve of the Civil War during the antebellum period?

To tackle a three-page essay on the meaning of freedom for enslaved people in the United States, it is very important to keep in mind that there was no single idea of freedom.  The condition of slaves varied tremendously throughout the United States.  Some slaves lived near urban areas and had relatively high amounts of personal autonomy as well as exposure to free people of color, while other slaves were in isolation on plantations and may not ever encounter free people or color or even regularly encounter slaves held captive on other plantations.  In addition, men, women,....

Empowering Equality: Breaking Barriers and Building Bridges

Gender equality stands as a fundamental principle for building a just and inclusive society. In recent years, progress has been made, but challenges persist. This essay delves into the multifaceted landscape of fairness, examining the importance of dismantling stereotypes, promoting equal opportunities, and fostering a cultural shift. As we navigate the complexities of the 21st century, the pursuit of genuine equality emerges not only as a moral imperative but also as a critical driver of social and economic progress.

To achieve true equality, the first step involves challenging ingrained stereotypes that limit individuals based on their gender. Stereotypes perpetuate biased expectations, restricting both men and women to predefined roles. For instance, the persistent notion that certain professions are exclusively suited for one gender perpetuates inequality in the workplace. Initiatives promoting diverse role models, debunking myths, and redefining societal norms contribute to dismantling these stereotypes.

Ensuring equal opportunities in education and employment forms the cornerstone of equality. Educational institutions and workplaces must adopt policies that eliminate barriers and provide a level playing field. This involves addressing disparities in STEM education, encouraging girls to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated fields, and advocating for fair hiring practices. Achieving balance in educational and professional spheres fosters an environment where talent and capability, rather than gender, determine success.

A genuine cultural shift is imperative for achieving lasting equality. Cultural norms often perpetuate inequality, shaping attitudes and behaviors. Encouraging open conversations about gender, challenging discriminatory practices, and promoting inclusivity in all aspects of life contribute to this transformation. It requires collective efforts from communities, media, and policymakers to create a culture that respects and values individuals irrespective of their gender.

In conclusion, the journey toward gender fairness is a dynamic process that involves dismantling stereotypes, ensuring equal opportunities, and fostering cultural transformation. By challenging societal norms and advocating for inclusive policies, we can pave the way for a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive, unbound by gender-based constraints. Empowering equality not only aligns with the principles of justice and fairness but also propels societies toward greater prosperity and harmony.

Breaking Chains: The Unfinished Journey Towards Gender Equality"

Gender equality, a beacon of progress in contemporary societies, still faces significant challenges, with deeply rooted stereotypes and systemic barriers hindering its realization. This essay embarks on an exploration of the persistent issues surrounding evenness, emphasizing the imperative to dismantle stereotypes, advocate for equal opportunities, and drive transformative change. As we confront the complexities of the 21st century, the pursuit of authentic equality emerges as not only a societal responsibility but also as an essential catalyst for fostering diversity, inclusivity, and social prosperity.

The journey toward true gender parity necessitates a concerted effort to challenge and dismantle age-old stereotypes that confine individuals within rigid male and female roles. These stereotypes perpetuate harmful biases, limiting opportunities for personal and professional growth. A critical focus should be on dispelling myths surrounding gendered expectations, such as the notion that certain professions are exclusively for one gender. Initiatives promoting diverse role models and challenging societal norms are pivotal in dismantling these restrictive stereotypes.

An indispensable component of achieving gender equality lies in advocating for equal opportunities in education. Educational institutions should implement policies that eradicate barriers and promote inclusivity. This involves addressing gender disparities in STEM fields, encouraging girls to pursue careers in traditionally male-dominated sectors, and ensuring fair and unbiased educational environments. By cultivating an educational landscape that values competence over gender, societies can lay the foundation for a more equitable future.

Achieving genuine gender equality requires a holistic approach that includes systemic change at various levels of society. This involves not only addressing individual attitudes but also transforming institutional practices. Policies promoting equal pay, parental leave, and unbiased hiring practices contribute to dismantling systemic barriers. Additionally, fostering workplace cultures that prioritize diversity and inclusivity plays a crucial role in creating environments where all individuals, regardless of gender, can thrive.

In conclusion, the journey toward gender equality is an ongoing struggle that demands persistent efforts to dismantle stereotypes, advocate for equal opportunities, and drive systemic change. By challenging societal norms and fostering inclusive policies, societies can move closer to realizing the promise of a future where gender does not dictate one's opportunities or potential. Breaking the chains of ingrained biases is not just a societal obligation; it is a transformative endeavor that paves the way for a more just, inclusive, and harmonious world.

Gender Inequality in India

As per the World Economic Forum’s gender gap ranking, India stands at rank 108 out of 149 countries. Several laws and policies are prepared to encourage girls. “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Yojana ” (Save girl, and make girls educated) campaign is created to spread awareness of the importance of girl child.  Several laws to protect girls are also there. However, we need more awareness of spreading knowledge of women rights . In addition, the government should take initiatives to check the correct and proper implementation of policies.

📝 Equality Essay Examples

And here are essay samples on equality. As both are less than 300 words, you can use these examples as a structure reference or inspiration for your work.

What Is the Relationship between Equality and Justice Essay

When discussing equality and justice, it is better to start with the definitions. These terms have different meanings, leading to a misunderstanding of their relationship. As for me, the connection between equality and justice in society is about receiving the same opportunities and treatment for all people. In terms of equality, it is impossible to reach its whole meaning in modern society. We are born in different families, with specific talents and unique experiences. The only thing that matters is that people should have equal rights regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and other factors that might cause discrimination. Justice means that everyone gets what they deserve. If a child is smart enough to get to a good college but cannot pay for it, they should get financial aid. If a person is a great professional, they should receive the job they apply for. In such a way, these people would move progress and economy forward. If we connect these two terms, we will see that they have many in common. Equality means that the same opportunities are available to everyone. Justice means that people who deserve something because of their talents and hard work get it. In conclusion, equality and justice should go hand in hand if we want to live in a discrimination-free society. Giving everyone equal chances to succeed and live whole lives is fair and beneficial for progress.

Gender Equality in Sports Essay

Gender equality in sports has reached some achievements. As for now, around 40% of all sports participants during significant sporting events are women. Even if this number is close to half, there are still issues to address, including unequal media coverage, income differences, and stereotyping in sports. Women receive less media coverage than men do. Women’s sports get only four percent of all sports reports in media. While all types of media follow demand and create it, women need more attention and coverage to draw attention to their careers and achievements and earn more money. Women should be paid equally for their effort and achievements. They try as hard as men and spend the same amount of time training. Here’s just one of the many examples to consider. The US Women’s National Soccer Team won the 2015 championship. They received three times less money than men who didn’t even make it to the finals. Even if football seems to be a sport created for men and by men, we should still value time and effort equally. Some sports are considered feminine or masculine , creating gender barriers for women. For example, the media presents football as a manly sport. At the same time, such sports as gymnastics and figure skating are feminine sports according to popular stereotypes. We need gender equality in sports to help women build careers and be more motivated. If women are paid, respected, and presented by the media equally, sports careers would be more rewarding for them.

What does gender equality look like today?

Date: Wednesday, 6 October 2021

Progress towards gender equality is looking bleak. But it doesn’t need to.

A new global analysis of progress on gender equality and women’s rights shows women and girls remain disproportionately affected by the socioeconomic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic, struggling with disproportionately high job and livelihood losses, education disruptions and increased burdens of unpaid care work. Women’s health services, poorly funded even before the pandemic, faced major disruptions, undermining women’s sexual and reproductive health. And despite women’s central role in responding to COVID-19, including as front-line health workers, they are still largely bypassed for leadership positions they deserve.

UN Women’s latest report, together with UN DESA, Progress on the Sustainable Development Goals: The Gender Snapshot 2021 presents the latest data on gender equality across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The report highlights the progress made since 2015 but also the continued alarm over the COVID-19 pandemic, its immediate effect on women’s well-being and the threat it poses to future generations.

We’re breaking down some of the findings from the report, and calling for the action needed to accelerate progress.

The pandemic is making matters worse

One and a half years since the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, the toll on the poorest and most vulnerable people remains devastating and disproportionate. The combined impact of conflict, extreme weather events and COVID-19 has deprived women and girls of even basic needs such as food security. Without urgent action to stem rising poverty, hunger and inequality, especially in countries affected by conflict and other acute forms of crisis, millions will continue to suffer.

A global goal by global goal reality check:

Goal 1. Poverty

Globally, 1 in 5 girls under 15 are growing up in extreme poverty.

In 2021, extreme poverty is on the rise and progress towards its elimination has reversed. An estimated 435 million women and girls globally are living in extreme poverty.

And yet we can change this .

Over 150 million women and girls could emerge from poverty by 2030 if governments implement a comprehensive strategy to improve access to education and family planning, achieve equal wages and extend social transfers.

Goal 2. Zero hunger

Small-scale farmer households headed by women earn on average 30% less than those headed by men.

The global gender gap in food security has risen dramatically during the pandemic, with more women and girls going hungry. Women’s food insecurity levels were 10 per cent higher than men’s in 2020, compared with 6 per cent higher in 2019.

This trend can be reversed , including by supporting women small-scale producers, who typically earn far less than men, through increased funding, training and land rights reforms.

Goal 3. Good health and well-being

In the first year of the pandemic, there were an estimated additional 1.4 million additional unintended pregnancies in lower- and middle-income countries.

Disruptions in essential health services due to COVID-19 are taking a tragic toll on women and girls. In the first year of the pandemic, there were an estimated 1.4 million additional unintended pregnancies in lower and middle-income countries.

We need to do better .

Response to the pandemic must include prioritizing sexual and reproductive health services, ensuring they continue to operate safely now and after the pandemic is long over. In addition, more support is needed to ensure life-saving personal protection equipment, tests, oxygen and especially vaccines are available in rich and poor countries alike as well as to vulnerable population within countries.

Goal 4. Quality education

Half of all refugee girls enrolled in secondary school before the pandemic will not return to school.

A year and a half into the pandemic, schools remain partially or fully closed in 42 per cent of the world’s countries and territories. School closures spell lost opportunities for girls and an increased risk of violence, exploitation and early marriage .

Governments can do more to protect girls education .

Measures focused specifically on supporting girls returning to school are urgently needed, including measures focused on girls from marginalized communities who are most at risk.

Goal 5. Gender equality

Women are restricted from working in certain jobs or industries in almost 50% of countries.

The pandemic has tested and even reversed progress in expanding women’s rights and opportunities. Reports of violence against women and girls, a “shadow” pandemic to COVID-19, are increasing in many parts of the world. COVID-19 is also intensifying women’s workload at home, forcing many to leave the labour force altogether.

Building forward differently and better will hinge on placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.

Goal 6. Clean water and sanitation

Only 26% of countries are actively working on gender mainstreaming in water management.

In 2018, nearly 2.3 billion people lived in water-stressed countries. Without safe drinking water, adequate sanitation and menstrual hygiene facilities, women and girls find it harder to lead safe, productive and healthy lives.

Change is possible .

Involve those most impacted in water management processes, including women. Women’s voices are often missing in water management processes.

Goal 7. Affordable and clean energy

Only about 1 in 10 senior managers in the rapidly growing renewable energy industry is a woman.

Increased demand for clean energy and low-carbon solutions is driving an unprecedented transformation of the energy sector. But women are being left out. Women hold only 32 per cent of renewable energy jobs.

We can do better .

Expose girls early on to STEM education, provide training and support to women entering the energy field, close the pay gap and increase women’s leadership in the energy sector.

Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth

In 2020 employed women fell by 54 million. Women out of the labour force rose by 45 million.

The number of employed women declined by 54 million in 2020 and 45 million women left the labour market altogether. Women have suffered steeper job losses than men, along with increased unpaid care burdens at home.

We must do more to support women in the workforce .

Guarantee decent work for all, introduce labour laws/reforms, removing legal barriers for married women entering the workforce, support access to affordable/quality childcare.

Goal 9. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Just 4% of clinical studies on COVID-19 treatments considered sex and/or gender in their research

The COVID-19 crisis has spurred striking achievements in medical research and innovation. Women’s contribution has been profound. But still only a little over a third of graduates in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics field are female.

We can take action today.

Quotas mandating that a proportion of research grants are awarded to women-led teams or teams that include women is one concrete way to support women researchers.

Goal 10. Reduced inequalities

While in transit to their new destination, 53% of migrant women report experiencing or witnessing violence, compared to 19% of men.

Limited progress for women is being eroded by the pandemic. Women facing multiple forms of discrimination, including women and girls with disabilities, migrant women, women discriminated against because of their race/ethnicity are especially affected.

Commit to end racism and discrimination in all its forms, invest in inclusive, universal, gender responsive social protection systems that support all women.

Goal 11. Sustainable cities and communities

Slum residents are at an elevated risk of COVID-19 infection and fatality rates. In many countries, women are overrepresented in urban slums.

Globally, more than 1 billion people live in informal settlements and slums. Women and girls, often overrepresented in these densely populated areas, suffer from lack of access to basic water and sanitation, health care and transportation.

The needs of urban poor women must be prioritized .

Increase the provision of durable and adequate housing and equitable access to land; included women in urban planning and development processes.

Goal 12. Sustainable consumption and production; Goal 13. Climate action; Goal 14. Life below water; and Goal 15. Life on land

Women are finding solutions for our ailing planet, but are not given the platforms they deserve. Only 29% of featured speakers at international ocean science conferences are women.

Women activists, scientists and researchers are working hard to solve the climate crisis but often without the same platforms as men to share their knowledge and skills. Only 29 per cent of featured speakers at international ocean science conferences are women.

And yet we can change this .

Ensure women activists, scientists and researchers have equal voice, representation and access to forums where these issues are being discussed and debated.

Goal 16. Peace, justice and strong institutions

Women's unequal decision-making power undermines development at every level. Women only chair 18% of government committees on foreign affairs, defence and human rights.

The lack of women in decision-making limits the reach and impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and other emergency recovery efforts. In conflict-affected countries, 18.9 per cent of parliamentary seats are held by women, much lower than the global average of 25.6 per cent.

This is unacceptable .

It's time for women to have an equal share of power and decision-making at all levels.

Goal 17. Global partnerships for the goals

Women are not being sufficiently prioritized in country commitments to achieving the SDGs, including on Climate Action. Only 64 out of 190 of nationally determined contributions to climate goals referred to women.

There are just 9 years left to achieve the Global Goals by 2030, and gender equality cuts across all 17 of them. With COVID-19 slowing progress on women's rights, the time to act is now.

Looking ahead

As it stands today, only one indicator under the global goal for gender equality (SDG5) is ‘close to target’: proportion of seats held by women in local government. In other areas critical to women’s empowerment, equality in time spent on unpaid care and domestic work and decision making regarding sexual and reproductive health the world is far from target. Without a bold commitment to accelerate progress, the global community will fail to achieve gender equality. Building forward differently and better will require placing women and girls at the centre of all aspects of response and recovery, including through gender-responsive laws, policies and budgeting.
