Mohamed Salah (born June 15, 1992, Basyoun, Egypt) is an Egyptian soccer (association football) player known for his prolific scoring, which made him an invaluable contributor to both the English Premier League and the Egyptian national team. Salah was named 2017 African Footballer of the Year and the Premier League’s player of the season in 2017–18 after scoring 32 goals in a single season as a forward for Liverpool FC . Salah is a three-time recipient of the Golden Boot, the award for the Premier League’s top scorer of the season.

Salah was born to middle-class parents in Basyoun, Egypt , north of Cairo . As a youth, he idolized such professional football players as Brazilian Ronaldo and French Zinedine Zidane , whose moves he tried to emulate during pickup games. He joined the Egyptian club El Mokawloon’s youth team at age 14 and debuted with the club’s senior team in 2010. Salah’s speed and scoring ability soon caught the attention of Swiss club FC Basel, which signed him to a contract in 2012. He helped lead FC Basel to the Swiss Super League title and an appearance in the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Europa League semifinals in 2012–13. That season he received the Swiss Golden Player award as the Super League’s outstanding player.

Salah transferred to Chelsea FC of the Premier League in January 2014, where he struggled initially despite high expectations. He started in only six Premier League matches with the club before he was loaned to Fiorentina of Italy’s top league, Serie A, in February 2015. Salah’s play improved dramatically after his move to the Italian league, and later that year Chelsea loaned him to another Serie A team, AS Roma . He completed a permanent transfer to AS Roma before the 2016–17 season, and during that season he recorded 19 goals and 13 assists and was chosen as AS Roma’s player of the year.

Salah returned to the Premier League in July 2017 after signing to play for Liverpool. He netted an astonishing 32 goals in Premier League matches in 2017–18, setting a Premier League record for the most goals scored by a player during a single 38-game season. He received the Golden Boot as the Premier League’s top scorer, and that season he also led Liverpool to the UEFA Champions League final, where the team lost to Real Madrid 3–1. (Salah would receive the Golden Boot again during the 2018–19 and 2021–22 seasons.) Salah finished the season with an overall tally of 44 goals in all competitions. He garnered the Premier League’s player of the season award in May 2018, and he was only the third Liverpool player and the first Egyptian to receive that honour. Salah helped Liverpool secure the Champions League title in 2019, scoring on an early penalty kick during the team’s 2–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur in the final match. Salah was again Liverpool’s top goal scorer in 2019–20. He made 19 goals and 10 assists that season as the team captured the Premier League title.

In addition to his success with professional clubs, Salah was a driving force on the Egyptian national team. After initially playing on Egypt’s under-20 and under-23 teams, Salah made the first of his many appearances with the senior national squad in 2011. He led the team to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations final where Egypt lost to Cameroon 2–1. Later that year he helped Egypt qualify for the 2018 World Cup in Russia . It was the first time that Egypt had qualified for the tournament since 1990. Salah scored two goals in Egypt’s three World Cup matches in Russia, though the team failed to advance past the tournament’s group stage. Salah and Egypt returned to the Africa Cup of Nations in 2021, where they finished in second-place after losing to Senegal 4–2 in the tournament’s final game.

Mohamed Salah  Club Career

El mokawloon sc (2010–2012).

Young Salah began his club career with Egyptian Premier League side El Mokawloon SC, debuting for the senior team in 2010. Salah continued to become a regular face for El Mokawloon until the Egyptian Premier League was suspended following a stadium riot in February 2012.

FC Basel (2012–2014)

Swiss football club side had been interested in Salah, monitoring his activities for a while. Following the suspension of the Egyptian Premier League, a friendly was organized with the Egyptian U-23 side, which they won. After their loss, Salah was invited to train with Basel. Finally, in April 2012, Salah agreed to a four-year contract with the Swiss side. Salah’s debut season was quite successful, advancing to the Europa League semi-finals as well as claiming the Swiss Super League season and emerging runners-up in the Swiss Cup. Salah also won the 2013 Uhrencup. In the Champions League, Salah helped Basel prevail over English-side Chelsea scoring the winning goal against Chelsea in a 1-0 home win after equalizing in a 2-1 away win.

Chelsea FC (2014–2016)

Following Salah’s performance against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League, it was announced that Salah had agreed to a deal which will bring him to London. The deal was reported to be worth around 11 million pounds. The move was finally sealed three days after the announcement. Salah debuted for Chelsea as a substitute in the premier league on February 8 2014. In the 2014–2015 season, Salah’s future at Chelsea seemed to be hanging in the balance, after his request for an Education scheme was rescinded by Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education. This meant that Salah could be forced to carry out military service in Egypt. However, Salah was exempted from carrying out military service following a meeting with Egypt’s Prime Minister, Minister of Higher Education and national manager. Salah was left out of play for Chelsea in the 2014–2015 season before he was loaned to Fiorentina.

Loan to ACF Fiorentina

On February 2, 2015, before the end of the transfer season, Chelsea loaned Salah for an 18-month period to Serie A side, Fiorentina. Salah chose the no. 74 jersey in honour of the port said stadium riot victim in Egypt. Sarah debuted for Fiorentina as a 65th-minute substitute in a victory over Atlanta. Salah was a really great addition to the Fiorentina squad helping them prevail over formidable opponents. Loan to A.S. Roma

In August 2016, Salah joined Roma for a season worth about 5 million Euros, with an option to make the deal permanent for 15 million Euros. Salah also had a successful run with Roma which earned him Player of the season. Salah also finished the season as the A.S. Roma’s top scorer. In 2016, Roma made Salah’s deal permanent. His second season with Roma was also successful.

Liverpool F.C. (2017–present)

Salah agreed to a move to Liverpool in June 2017, worth an initial 42 million euros which could increase to 50 million euros. On arrival at Anfield, Salah was handed the no.11 jersey previously worn by Roberto Firmino. Salah was Liverpool’s first Egyptian signing. In his debut for Liverpool, he scored in a 3-3 draw against Watford. That August, Salah was awarded Liverpool’s Player of the month for his remarkable performance. Salah had a successful run for the remainder of the season. Salah broke Liverpool’s record for scoring 36 times in his debut season. He became the leading goalscorer in Europe’s top fiver beating Lionel Messi and Harry Kane to the feat. On April 28, 2018, Salah won the PFA Player’s Player of the Year award. Salah had been named to the PFA Team of the Year. Salah helped Liverpool to the Champions League Final against Real Madrid where he was substituted after suffering a shoulder injury in the 30 th minute. On July 2, 2018, Salah signed a long-term contract with Liverpool. In August 2018 Salah was shortlisted to the final three for the UEFA Men’s Player of the Year which he emerged third, the UEFA Forward of the season where he came third as well as the best FIFA Men’s Player where he finished third. He was however awarded the 2018 Puskas Award.

Mohamed Salah National Team Career

Salah had appeared for the Egyptian U-20 and U-23 side 11 times representing them in the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup as well as the 2012 Summer Olympics. He debuted for the senior national team in 2011. After missing three consecutive Africa Cup of Nation Finals. Salah was part of the squad that led the Egyptian side to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations. Salah led the team to the Africa cup of Nation Final, which earned him a place in the CAF Team of the tournament.

Salah also aided the Egyptian side to the World Cup, where they had a bad outing. On September 8, 2018, Salah helped his side qualify for the 2019 AFCON.

Salah is known to be a Muslim. He got married to his wife, Maggi, on December 17, 2013, in his hometown Nagrig. Together, they gave birth to their daughter, Makka in 2014.

Childhood & Early Life

Mohamed Salah was born on June 15, 1992, in Nagrig, Gharbia, Egypt, to average middle-class parents. Mohamed wasn’t good at academics, which worried his parents. Mohamed tried finding the right balance between his academics and football but he could never improve his academics. Football remained his priority all through his childhood and teenage days.

When he wasn’t playing, he was watching football on television. Among his early idols were some Arabic players. His parents wanted a conventional career for him, but unaffected by his parents’ wishes, Salah kept himself completely engrossed in football.

At first, Salah played football just for fun, but he started taking it as a serious career opportunity when he joined a local youth club ‘El Mokawloon’ in Cairo. It was far away from his hometown and he had to change five buses to reach the academy, which further harmed his academics, but his passion for the game kept him focused.

In May 2010, at the age of 18, he was finally accepted into the senior team of his club. At first, Salah mostly played as a substitute player but eventually, as his game improved, he became a regular forward in the team. Around 2012, the ‘Egyptian Premier League’ faced a shutdown and the fate of many of its players became uncertain.

When the ‘Port Said Stadium Disaster’ threatened the existence of the ‘Egyptian Premier League,’ Swiss club ‘Basel’ offered him a contract. In April 2012, he signed a four-year contract with Basel. He made his ‘UEFA Championship League’ debut in the same year and in the ‘Europa League,’ and scored on many crucial occasions to help his team reach the semi-finals, where they eventually lost.

Salah played an important role in Basel’s 2012-13 ‘Swiss Super League Championship’ victory, and a great performance in the Swiss Cup, where they finished runners-up. In the beginning of the next season, Salah was part of the Basel squad that won the ‘Uhren Cup.’

He performed very well against Chelsea in two matches within a few weeks, which made the club interested in him. In January 2014, he joined Chelsea.

In February 2014, Salah debuted for Chelsea in the ‘Premier League’ against ‘Newcastle United’ and scored his first goal against Arsenal in March. Before the beginning of the 2014-15 season, it was reported that Salah could go back to Egypt to complete his mandatory military training, but as it turned out, Salah had met the Egyptian Prime Minister and got himself exempted.

In February 2015, Chelsea loaned him to the Italian club ‘Fiorentina,’ which was valid until the end of the 2015-16 season. On February 14, he made his debut for the club, and at the end of the season, Salah showed his reluctance to join ‘Fiorentina’ back. He was interested in joining another Serie A team ‘A.S. Roma’ instead.

In August 2015, he transferred to ‘Roma’ on loan. In September 2015, ‘Fiorentina,’ miffed with Chelsea’s breach of contract, filed a case, but it was later settled and Salah stayed with ‘Roma.’

By the end of his first season for ‘Roma,’ Salah emerged as the ‘Best Player’ of the Season and also the top scorer with 15 goals. In 2016, Roma’s management approached him for a permanent deal and he agreed to it. Despite signing a long-term deal with ‘Roma,’ Salah couldn’t resist an offer by ‘Liverpool’ in 2017.

In June 2017, Salah agreed to a long-term contract with Liverpool for 50 million Pounds, which was a club record. He, thus, became Liverpool’s first-ever Egyptian player and scored in his debut match against ‘Watford.’ He was named as ‘Player of the Month’ for August by Liverpool fans.

In one of his matches against ‘Watford,’ he scored 4 goals to secure a 5-0 victory for his team. This was his first hat-trick for ‘Liverpool’ and by the end of the season, he emerged as the leading goal-scorer with 36 goals.

Personal Life

Mohamed Salah is a devoted Muslim and after every goal, he performs sujood. His fans have reiterated that if Salah keeps scoring goals, they would convert to Islam!

In 2012, Salah married Maggi and the couple has a daughter, Makka. The little girl was born in London and has been christened after the Muslim holy city of Mecca.

At the age of 14 he joined the Egyptian club El Mokawloon’s youth team. He made his debut with El Mokawloon’s senior team in 2010. Salah’s speed and goal-scoring ability soon caught the attention of Swiss club FC Basel, which signed him to a contract in 2012. After, Mohamed Radwan, Al Mokawloon manager, noticed 15 years old Salah was moved to the senior squad.

Then Salah was provided with special diet and training programs for his muscle growth. Later, at the age of 18, Salah made his senior debut for the club on 3rd May 2010 against Mansoura.

Further in the 2010-11 camp, he started gaining more minutes on the pitch. But he struggled to score goals.

On the 2015 January transfer, Mohamed Salah joined Florentina on an 18-month loan. To honor Port Said Stadium victims, Salah wore 74. 

In his first start for Florentina on 14 February , he contributed a goal and assisted in a 3-1 win over Sassuolo. During 6 months period only he scored 6 goals in 16 matches.

Later, Florentina activated the option to make his loan move permanent. However, Salah refused to return and join the fellow Italian club Roma instead.

On 6 August 2015 , Roma signed Salah for a €5 million season-long loan with a permanent deal option later. Since his time at Roma, he started wearing 11 jersey numbers. 

During his first season, Salah won Roma 2015-16 Player of the Year. Over 42 games, he scored 15 goals helping the team qualify for UCL.

Before the beginning of the 2016-17 season, Roma triggered the option to make his loan move permanent for €15 million .

On 6 November 2016 , Salah netted his first career hattrick in a 3-0 win against Bolongo.

Despite scoring 15 league goals, he could not help Roma clinch the Seria A title as they fell just 4 points behind Juventus. 

Return to England

Individual success campaign.

On 22 June 2017 , Mohamed Salah joined Liverpool for £36.5m , breaking the club fee record previously spent £35m on Andy Carroll.

Salah then scored on his premier league debut in a 3-3 draw against Watford. Later, on 18 March 2018 , Salah scored his first Liverpool hattrick in a 5-0 victory over Watford.

In that match, he scored 4 goals. That game helped Salah broke the club record of 36 goals in the debut season.

Mohamed’s 32 goals are the most scored by any player in a single premier league season. 

The 2018 UCL final has a sad ending for Salah as he was injured in just the 30th minute. The match finished 3-1 defeat to Real Madrid. However, he was named in the 2018 World Cup final squad.

Although Liverpool could not win any titles in the 2017-18 season, he collected some individual trophies.

Firstly, Mohamed Salah was awarded PFA Player of the Year , and then he also won Premier League Golden Boot award . 

Champion League Winner

Despite being shortlisted in UEFA Men’s Player of the Year, UEFA Forward of the Season, and The Best FIFA Men’s Player of the year, he went home empty-handed.

However, his winning goal against Everton helped him controversially win the 2018 FIFA Puskas Award.

There was an online protest for that decision. On 24 October , Salah scored a brace against Red Star Belgrade in UCL.

Moreover, his two goals helped him become the fastest Liverpool player to reach half-century goals. Salah only took 65 games for it.

On 26 April 2019 , Slah made his 100th Liverpool appearance against Huddersfield Town , scoring twice in a 5-0 win. 

He scored 22 goals in the 2018-19 campaign. Later, Salah, alongside Mane and Aubameyang, was named golden boot winners.  

In the Champion League final on 1 June 2019 , Salah scored the first goal to help Liverpool win 2-0 against Tottenham.

His goal in two minutes was the second-fastest UCL final goal behind Paolo Maldini in the 2005 final. 

Premier League Winner

Firstly, Salah scored a decisive penalty against Chelsea to help Liverpool win the UEFA Supercup.

Later, on 7 December , Salah made his 100 Premier League appearances for Liverpool in a 3-0 victory against Bournemouth. In that match, he scored one and assisted for another goal. 

Furthermore, Salah then won the Golden Ball award in the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup , helping Liverpool win their third title of the season.

On 24 June 2020 , Salah scored a goal in a 4-0 victory against Crystal Place, helping Liverpool edge closer to winning the title.

After Chelsea defeated Manchester City, Liverpool won their first Premier League title for the first time before 7 games.

100 goal Milestone

Mohamed Salah began the 2020-21 Premier league campaign scoring a hattrick in a 4-3 win over Leeds United. 

Later, on 17 October 2020 , Salah scored his 100th Liverpool goal in a 2-2 draw against Merseyside rival Everton.

Salah was called up for the  2012 Summer Olympics to represent the Egypt U-23 team.

Later, he scored a goal in all the group matches against Brazil, New Zealand, and Belarus. However, his team lost 3-0 in the quarter-final against Japan.

Furthermore, Salah was honored with CAF’s Most Promising African Talent for his performances in the Olympics. He has also represented Egypt in the U-20 world cup.

Senior Team

Salah made his senior team debut on 3rd September 2011 in a 2-1 loss against Sierra Leone. Later, on 8 October 2011 , he scored his first-ever goal for the national team.

Salah scored his first Egypt hattrick in a 4-2 win over Zimbabwe on 9 June 2013 . He also played an important role in helping Egypt reach the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

Over 6 matches, Salah recorded 2 goals and 1 assist, securing a place in the Tournament CAF Team of the Tournament. However, they lost to Cameroon 2-1 in the finals.

2018 FIFA World Cup

Mohamed Salah helped Egypt to reach its first World Cup finals after 28 years of absence. He was the team World Cup qualifying highest scorer with 5 goals. 

Moreover, Salah’s 2 goals in the decisive 2-1 win against Congo brought joy to all Egyptian fans and became their hero.

Salah, alongside Mane and Firmino, is one of the deadliest trios in world football. Among them, Salah is most of the prolific scorer for the Liverpool team under Jurgen Klopp.

Salah mostly plays as a right-winger. But as a versatile forward, he can play on either flank and even as an attacking midfielder or secondary striker. 

He is well-known for his speed, dribbling, movement, control, and finishing. Salah uses his pace and flair to beat opponents to create goal-scoring chances for himself or his team members.

Mohamed Salah is happily married to his long-time girlfriend, Maggi Salah . According to sources, Mohamed and Maggi have dated each other since junior school.

They knew each other from the school they went to, and their love story started when they were classmates in junior years.

They dated each other for several years before getting married. Further, they tied the knot in 2013 in a grand wedding ceremony.

Interestingly, they invited the whole village to their wedding. Their special day was open for all with no limit on guests’ numbers. As a result, thousands of people attended their wedding.

Moreover, the couple is blessed with two beautiful daughters Makka Salah and Kayan Salah . Mekka was born in 2014, whereas Kayan in 2020.

Mohamed Salah--Soccer Superhero: A Positive Role Model for his Faith

Mohamed Salah’s fans in the United Kingdom city of Liverpool are absolutely giddy about him and his winning style of play. His behavior on and off the field is exemplary and clearly evokes the symbolism of his religion—Islam. Salah’s fans, because of this one individual player, seem to have become more respectful of Islam, at least on the surface. Whether they’re giddy enough to convert to Islam, as they proclaim, is quite another issue. Furthermore, it’s unclear whether this respect for their hero’s faith is sustainable in the long run. While a team player, he has become the focal point of the many teams he’s now played for. For the moment, despite a recent shoulder injury, this Egyptian ‘soccer’ player, as Americans call the sport or ‘football’ as the rest of the world calls it, remains in the spotlight both for his talent as a player and as someone who exemplifies his religion. 

A Rising Star

Salah, whose full name is Mohamed Salah Ghaly, started his soccer career as a forward for the Egyptian premier league team, El Mokawloon El-Arab . Based in Nasr City, Cairo, the team is owned by Egyptian construction magnate Osman Ahmed Osman. Salah grew up in an Egyptian village, playing soccer, often with balls concocted of used clothing. This is a decades-old ritual, Egyptian boys playing rudimentary soccer as they watch the pros on TV, dreaming themselves of one day making it into the big leagues. Of course, we all know what the chances of that are. For Salah, however, he just seemed to have all the talent in the world.

Showing his dazzling foot skills and scoring ability, Salah moved to several consecutive teams, including the Swiss team Basel, Chelsea in the UK, and Roma in Italy. From there, he was picked up by Liverpool, where he has won all kinds of superlatives, including a significant number of awards. Notably, he won the Premier League ‘Golden Boot’ for his achievement of 32 goals in 36 league games.

A Proud Egyptian and Muslim

Even as his professional career has skyrocketed, Salah has continued to represent Egyptian teams in several Africa-wide competitions. He is loyal to his country and practices his faith, Islam, openly and proudly. Married in 2013 and having become a father in 2014, his wife and he named their daughter Makka in honor of the holy city of Mecca. She is herself a big hit with fans as she kicks the soccer ball about with her Dad. Salah’s wife is traditional in her dress code, wearing the veil

Salah often celebrates his goals by performing the sujood. This is an Arabic word that means prostration to God, made in the direction of the Kaaba, the central holy place in Mecca. It is usually done during daily prayers, but whenever it is performed, it is intended to praise and glorify God. Often Salah accompanies the sujood with a symbol of the s hahada, the Profession of Faith of Islam, by pointing his index fingers skyward. This gesture represents Salah’s belief in the omnipotence of Allah, as well as his recognition of a goal well-scored.

Another gesture Salah has made to honor his faith was when he refused to celebrate a one-to-one draw against his former team, Chelsea but also to honor the victims of a terrible massacre of Muslims at a mosque in the north of Sinai in Egypt.

Salah’s fans adore and celebrate him with their names for him and their chants. He has been nicknamed “The Pharaoh” and, more recently, the “Egyptian King.” While he is apolitical, Salah has approved a chant to honor their star winger. To the tune of a 1996 hit, “Good Enough,” these fans concocted the following chant:

Mo Salah-la-la-la-la,

MoSalah-la-la-la-la,

If he’s good enough for you,

He’s good enough for me,

If he scores another few,

Then I’ll be Muslim, too.

First chanted in Portugal during a Champions League match against F.F. Porto, Salah’s fans were described as clutching pint glasses in each hand as they belted out that tune. Captured in a video, the chant, “I’ll be a Muslim, too,” leapt onto the social media, drawing in Liverpool fans among many others. Liverpool’s ascent is attributed largely to Salah, so in that sense, he is deserving of all the adoration he attracts.

One joke going around fans in Liverpool was that when Salah plays for his Egyptian team in the soccer World Cup next month, they will be rooting for Egypt. At this point, Salah claims that his wounded shoulder will not keep him from the World Cup.  

Softening the view of Islam or just plain Hero-worship?

In Liverpool at least, Salah has apparently turned an anti-Islamic tide from negative to mild acceptance of his religion. How long-lasting this is, however, is anyone’s bet. For the moment, such acceptance depends on Salah’s visibility as a global soccer star who is also one of the world’s most prominent Muslims. He is devout, attends mosque regularly, he’s modest, bearded, speaks English with a heavy accent, has a veiled wife, and, noted above, performs the sujood in a public space. All of these lead to a picture of an upright Muslim father and husband who is also very proud to be a son of Egypt. For Salah, this is par for the course of an everyday Muslim, not something he just does for the crowds. His behavior seems not to be a political statement but rather one of just who he is—namely someone who is not afraid to openly practice his Muslim faith. Compared to another Arab soccer star from an earlier time, Zinedine Zidane from Algeria, Salah has been much more open and celebratory of his faith.

Just being himself is what Salah is best at. Whether scoring winning goals on the field or enacting sujood when scoring those goals, he simply seems to do what comes naturally. A young Egyptian man from a village, one who is faithful, and who makes no pretenses about who he is, is perhaps the best way to understand Salah. To expect that he alone can overturn even a sliver of Islamophobia in his UK corner of the world, much less anywhere else, is putting way too much of a burden on his shoulders. Let’s just enjoy Mohamed Salah’s wizardry on the field and respect the fact that he proudly reflects the good-heartedness of Muslims around the world.

11 things you need to know about Mohamed Salah

1 . Mohamed Salah was born on June 15, 1992 in Basyoun, a city to the north of Cairo. He followed European football when he was young and his boyhood idols were Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo.

2 . He began his career in the youth team of El Mokawloon. As a youngster he was always picked at full-back but one episode convinced his coach to play him up front. His team had just won an important encounter 4-0 but rather than celebrating, Salah was actually in tears because he hadn't managed to get on the scoresheet. Once the coach realized how passionate he was about scoring goals, he moved him forward and steered his career down a different path in the process.

3 . His debut in the Egyptian top tier came in March 2010 and the following season he was promoted to the first team, scoring his first league goal in December 2010. By 2011-12, he had become a regular starter, but following the death of 74 fans in the Port Said stadium disaster and the Egyptian Revolution, the national championship was suspended.

With competitive club matches suspended, the opportunity to put himself in the shop window came along thanks to a friendly organized by FC Basel against the Egyptian U23 national team in March 2012. Salah came on in the second-half and netted twice, gifting his side a 4-3 victory. A month later, the Swiss club came calling with a four-year contract.

5 . In 2012-13, he played a starring role as Basel won the league. He was voted Most Valuable Player in the Swiss Super League and also won the Swiss Golden Player award.

6 . The story behind his transfer to Chelsea is similar to how he arrived in Switzerland in the first place. He played against his future club for Basel in the semi-finals of the 2012-13 Europa League and even scored the goal that put the Swiss outfit momentarily ahead at Stamford Bridge - the match ended up 3-1 to the hosts. In the following season, Salah hit the back of the net both home and away against Chelsea in the Champions League group stages, helping his team to two unexpected victories.

7 . In January 2015, he moved to Fiorentina on loan and his impact on Italian football was instant - with nine goals in just 26 matches. His standout moment in a Viola shirt has to be his double in the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-finals, handing Fiorentina a slender advantage at the Juventus Stadium.

Mohamed Salah Hamed Mahrous Ghaly ( Arabic : محمد صلاح حامد محروس غالي , Egyptian Arabic pronunciation:  [mæˈħam.mæd sˤɑˈlɑːħ ˈɣæːli] ; born 15 June 1992), known as Mohamed Salah or Mo Salah , is an Egyptian professional footballer who plays as a right winger or forward for Premier League club Liverpool and captains the Egypt national team . Regarded as one of the best players of his generation and among the greatest African players of all time, he is known for his clinical finishing, dribbling and speed. Salah started his senior career in 2010 playing for Al Mokawloon Al Arab , departing in 2012 to join Basel , where he won two Swiss Super League titles. In 2014, Salah joined Chelsea for a reported fee of £11 million, but limited gametime led to successive loans to Fiorentina and Roma , who later signed him permanently for €15 million. In the 2016–17 season, Salah was a key figure in Roma's unsuccessful title bid, reaching double figures in both goals and assists. In 2017, Salah was transferred to Liverpool for £36.9 million, a club record at the time. In his first season, he set the record for most Premier League goals scored (32) in a 38-game season and helped Liverpool to the 2018 UEFA Champions League final . Having formed a formidable attacking trio with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mané after the departure of Philippe Coutinho , Salah went on to be an integral player in the club's Champions League and Premier League title successes in the following two seasons, and has since also won the FA Cup , EFL Cup and FA Community Shield . Salah started out playing for the youth setups of local teams Ittihad Basyoun and Othmason Tanta. He names Ronaldo , Zinedine Zidane and Francesco Totti as his childhood idols. In 2006, he joined the youth team of Al Mokawloon Al Arab aged 14 after being spotted by a scout who had originally come to watch another child play but was distracted by Salah. Salah frequently had to miss school to make the three-hour journey to training. When Salah was 15 he was noticed by then first-team manager Mohamed Radwan, who moved him to the first-team squad immediately. Salah had to be given a special diet and training program due to his muscles not being fully formed because of his young age. Salah made his first-team debut on 3 May 2010 in the Egyptian Premier League , coming on as a substitute in a 1–1 away draw against El Mansoura. During the 2010–11 season Salah continued earning minutes on the pitch, eventually becoming a regular in the team. Even though he was getting regular game time, Salah struggled to score. In the dressing room after matches he would sometimes be in tears because of this, and Radwan says it only motivated him to become better. He scored his first goal for them on 25 December 2010 in a 1–1 away draw against Al Ahly . He remained a regular for Al Mokawloon, appearing in every game of the 2011–12 season. Following the Port Said Stadium riot on 1 February 2012, the Egyptian Premier League was suspended, and on 10 March, the Egyptian Football Association announced their decision to cancel the remainder of the season. Swiss Super League club Basel had been monitoring Salah for some time, so following the Egyptian Premier League suspension, the club organised a friendly match with the Egypt national under-23 team. The match took place on 16 March at the Stadion Rankhof in Basel , and despite only playing the second half, Salah scored twice, helping the Egyptians to a 4–3 win. Basel subsequently invited Salah to remain in the city for a week's training. On 10 April 2012, it was announced that Salah had signed for Basel on a four-year contract starting from 15 June 2012. He initially found it difficult to settle, having arrived unable to speak the language and been signed as a replacement for Xherdan Shaqiri . Salah scored on his unofficial debut on 23 June 2012 against FCSB during a friendly match, a 4–2 defeat. He made his official Basel debut in a UEFA Champions League preliminary stage match against the Norwegian club Molde on 8 August, coming on as a substitute in the 74th minute. He made his league debut on 12 August against Thun, playing the full match. He scored his first league goal a week later, the second goal in the 2–0 home win against Lausanne-Sport. Salah scored his first UEFA Europa League goal in the quarter-finals on 11 April 2013, as Basel advanced to the semi-finals by beating Tottenham Hotspur 4–1 in a penalty shoot-out after a 4–4 aggregate draw. In the semi-final on 2 May, Salah scored away to Chelsea , although Basel were beaten 5–2 on aggregate. Despite late disappointment in Europe, Basel won the 2012–13 Swiss Super League title and finished runners-up in the Swiss Cup. Ahead of the 2013–14 Swiss Super League season, Salah was a member of the Basel team that won the 2013 Uhrencup. Salah scored in his first league appearance of the season against Aarau on 13 July 2013. He scored his first Champions League goal a month later against Maccabi Tel Aviv on 6 August 2013 in the third qualifying round . Salah was the subject of major controversy following the game, after he appeared to deliberately avoid shaking hands with the players of the Israeli club in both the home and away legs. He scored twice against the Bulgarian league champions PFC Ludogorets Razgrad on 21 August 2013 in the play-off round. On 18 September 2013, Salah scored the equaliser against Chelsea in the 2–1 away win during the group stage. During the return tie on 26 November at the St. Jakob-Park, Salah scored the winning goal as Basel beat Chelsea for the second time with a 1–0 home win. However he was unable to prevent Basel being eliminated in the group stage. On the domestic stage, Salah continued to perform. Scoring 4 goals in 18 games, including a double against title rivals Young Boys , he helped Basel win the league title for the fifth time in a row. On 23 January 2014, it was announced that Salah would leave Basel. During his time with the club, Salah played a total of 95 games for Basel scoring a total of 21 goals. 47 of these games were in the Swiss Super League, six in the Swiss Cup, 26 in the UEFA competitions (Champions League and Europa League) and 16 were friendly games. He scored nine goals in the domestic league, four in the cup, seven in the European games and the other was scored during the test games. On 23 January 2014, Premier League club Chelsea announced that a deal had been agreed with Basel to sign Salah for a fee reported to be in the region of £11 million. Three days later the transfer was completed, making him the first Egyptian to sign for the London-based club. Liverpool had been interested in Salah, and had made an offer of £11 million but were beaten to his signature by Chelsea. On 8 February, Salah made his debut for Chelsea in the Premier League, coming on as a substitute in the 3–0 win over Newcastle United . Seven games later, on 22 March, Salah scored his first goal for Chelsea against Arsenal in the London Derby, coming on as a substitute for Oscar , in a match which ended as a 6–0 home win. Before the 2014–15 season, Salah's future with Chelsea looked to be in doubt after reports suggested he could be forced to return to Egypt to carry out military service after his registration for an education scheme was rescinded by the Egyptian Minister of Higher Education. He was spared of military service after a meeting with the then Egyptian prime minister Ibrahim Mahlab , the Minister of Higher Education, and the Egypt national team manager Shawky Gharieb. Salah changed squad numbers from 15 to 17 for the start of the season, with his new number having been vacated by Eden Hazard changing to number 10. Salah was rarely used during the season, making just three Premier League, two Champions League and three cup appearances, failing to score in any of them. On 28 October 2014, after a poor performance in a 2–1 win away League Two team Shrewsbury Town in the fourth round of the League Cup , he and fellow winger André Schürrle were criticised publicly by manager José Mourinho . Although Salah only made three league appearances before his loan move to Fiorentina , Mourinho stated that he would receive a replica winner's medal from the club for his contributions that season. On the transfer deadline day, 2 February 2015, Chelsea confirmed that Salah would join Italian club Fiorentina on an 18-month loan until the end of the 2015–16 season, as part of a transfer deal which saw Juan Cuadrado moving in the opposite direction. Six days after signing, he made his debut coming off the bench in the 65th minute as a replacement for Joaquín in a 3–2 home victory against Atalanta in Serie A . Salah chose the number 74 shirt in honour of the victims of the Port Said Stadium riot. Salah made his first start for Fiorentina on 14 February against Sassuolo , scoring his first goal for the club in the 30th minute. He then provided an assist to Khouma Babacar just two minutes after scoring; the match ended in a 3–1 win for Fiorentina. Twelve days later, Salah scored his first European goal for Fiorentina, as his side advanced to the round of sixteen of the Europa League, beating Tottenham 3–1 on aggregate. Salah scored the winning goal for Fiorentina against Inter Milan on 1 March, his third goal in Serie A. Four days after that, Salah scored both of Fiorentina's goals in their 2–1 win away to Juventus in the Coppa Italia semi-final first leg. At the end of the season, Fiorentina activated an option to make the loan move permanent, but Salah refused the move. Even though the loan agreement was for 18 months, Salah refused to return to Fiorentina and instead joined fellow Serie A club Roma . On 11 September, Fiorentina filed a complaint to FIFA, claiming that Chelsea had breached the agreed contract when they allowed Salah to join Roma on loan. The Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared Salah and Chelsea of any wrongdoing. On 6 August 2015, Salah joined Roma on a season-long loan for €5 million; with the option to make the deal permanent, for a reported €15 million. He wore the number 11 shirt. He made his debut on 22 August, as the new season began with a 1–1 draw away Hellas Verona . On 20 September, Salah scored his first goal of the season against Sassuolo to help Roma salvage a point as the match ended in a 2–2 draw. He went on to score in his following two matches, a 2–1 loss against Sampdoria and a 5–1 win against Carpi. On 25 October, Salah scored the opener against his former club Fiorentina in a 2–1 away victory to help earn a fourth straight league win for Roma. On his return, Salah was also sent off after picking up a second yellow in the closing minutes of the match, just seconds after picking up his first yellow. On 4 November, he scored the opening goal of a 3–2 Champions League win over Bayer Leverkusen . On 4 March, he faced his former side Fiorentina again and scored another double as Roma won 4–1 and broke into the top three. Salah would go onto score another three goals that season, scoring against Bologna , Genoa , and AC Milan , the latter on the final day. In the 2015–16 season, Salah scored 15 goals in 42 matches as Roma finished in third place in Serie A and qualified for the Champions League. In June, it was announced that Salah won the club's 2015–16 Player of the Season award. On 3 August 2016, Roma announced the signing of Salah on a permanent deal for €15 million. He scored his first goal of the season in a 4–0 win over Udinese in the opening game of the season on 20 August. On 6 November, Salah scored a hat-trick in a 3–0 win over Bologna , his first club career hat-trick . However, a ruptured ankle ligament kept him out for the first half of December. He returned as a half-time substitute in a 1–0 defeat against title rivals Juventus on 17 December. Salah then endured a two-month period without a goal, he broke his drought on 19 February, scoring against Torino in a 4–1 win. On 9 March, he scored Roma's opening goal in an eventual 4–2 defeat to Lyon in the first leg of the round of sixteen in the 2016–17 Europa League. Despite winning the second leg 2–1, they were unable to turn the tie around and were knocked out 5–4 on aggregate. On 28 May, in the final game of the season, Salah was substituted for captain Francesco Totti, who was playing his final game with the club, in a 3–2 win over Genoa. Roma finished the season in second, just four points behind champions Juventus. Salah scored 19 goals in all competitions. On 22 June 2017, Salah agreed a transfer to Premier League club Liverpool. He signed a long-term contract with the Reds for an initial £36.5m fee that could rise to £43m. The fee was a club record, eclipsing the £35m spent on Andy Carroll in 2011. He was assigned the number 11 shirt previously worn by Roberto Firmino who instead switched to number 9. He joined the club on 1 July upon the opening of the summer transfer window, becoming Liverpool's first Egyptian player. He scored on his Premier League debut against Watford in a 3–3 away draw on 12 August. On 24 August, Salah scored his second goal for Liverpool, in a 2017–18 Champions League play-off round 4–2 win (6–3 agg) against 1899 Hoffenheim , his first goal at Anfield . On 17 October, Salah netted twice in a 7–0 Champions League win over Maribor, helping Liverpool to the joint-largest ever away win in the competition, and the largest away win by an English club. On 26 November 2017, Salah scored the opener and refused to celebrate in a 1–1 home draw with his former team Chelsea out of respect for the club as well as victims of the Sinai Mosque attack two days earlier. Salah rose the top of the Premier League goalscoring charts by scoring twice after coming on as a substitute away at Stoke City on 29 November in a 3–0 win. The following month, Salah netted in a 4–0 win over AFC Bournemouth ; a result which saw Liverpool become the first team in Premier League history to win four consecutive away league matches by a margin of at least three goals. On 17 March 2018, Salah scored four goals in a 5–0 win over Watford, which was his first hat-trick for Liverpool. In early April 2018, he scored in both Champions League quarter-final matches against Manchester City to help his side advance. On 22 April 2018, Salah was awarded the PFA Players' Player of the Year award, having earlier been named in the PFA Team of the Year for the Premier League. Two days later, he scored a brace in a 5–2 Champions League semi-final first leg win over former club, Roma. In doing so, he simultaneously became the first player from Africa and the first Liverpool player to score 10 goals in a single campaign in the tournament. His double also took him to 43 goals for the season across all competitions, surpassing Roger Hunt 's tally of 42, and making him Liverpool's second-highest goalscorer in a single season, behind Ian Rush . He had previously also broken the club's record for the Premier League era, surpassing Robbie Fowler 's total of 36 goals set in the 1995–96 campaign, and Fernando Torres ' record of 33 for the most goals by a Liverpool player in a debut season. After his two goals and assists in the first leg against Roma, Salah featured in the second leg as Liverpool beat Roma 7–6 on aggregate to qualify for the final for the first time in eleven years. He would then become the Premier League's all-time goalscorer for a 38-game season, registering his 32nd league goal in a 4–0 win against Brighton & Hove Albion en route to being awarded the Premier League Golden Boot . In the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid , Salah injured his left shoulder in the 30th minute after a challenge by Madrid defender Sergio Ramos . After initially carrying on, he left the field in tears after going to ground again; the match ended in a 3–1 defeat. The Egyptian FA stated that this would have no effect on his availability for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, and that Salah would still be named in the team's final squad on 4 June. The day after the match, Ramos wrote a message and sent him good wishes. On 2 July 2018, Salah signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool. Manager Jürgen Klopp said the news was important as a statement of intent in terms of Liverpool's status in the football world in having Salah commit himself further to the club. On 12 August, Salah scored Liverpool's first goal of the season, in a 4–0 home win over West Ham United . On 30 August, Salah was named on the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Men's Player of the Year, coming in third place, and was also included on the three-man shortlist for the UEFA Forward of the Season, coming in second place. On 3 September he was named on the three-man shortlist for the Best FIFA Men's Player, finishing third. Salah controversially received the 2018 FIFA Puskás Award for goal of the year, the winning strike his goal at Anfield in his first Merseyside derby , prompting online protests against the decision. On 24 October, Salah scored twice against Red Star Belgrade in the 2018–19 Champions League group stage , with his second goal his 50th for the club. With 50 goals in 65 games he is the fastest player in Liverpool history to reach the half century. On 3 December, Salah was ranked in sixth place at the 2018 Ballon d'Or ceremony, as a recognition for his performances with club and country throughout 2018. On 8 December, Salah scored a hat-trick in a 4–0 away win over Bournemouth, to move Liverpool to the top of the league table . Three days later, he scored the winning goal in a 1–0 win over Napoli in their final Champions League group fixture, the result qualifying Liverpool to the round of sixteen. On 19 January 2019, he scored his 50th Premier League goal with a brace in a 4–3 win over Crystal Palace, reaching the tally in 72 appearances. In doing so, he became the joint-fourth fastest player to achieve the milestone, alongside Fernando Torres, and behind only Andy Cole , Alan Shearer and Ruud van Nistelrooy . In February 2019, West Ham said they were investigating a video which allegedly showed fans racially abusing Salah, including for being Muslim. The investigation resulted in the fan being banned for three years. On 5 April, he scored his 50th Premier League goal for Liverpool in a 3–1 win over Southampton and in the process broke Torres' record to become the fastest player to reach the milestone for the club, doing so in his 69th appearance. It also saw him become the third fastest player to reach the milestone for a single club in the Premier League era, behind Shearer for Blackburn Rovers , in 66 appearances, and Van Nistelrooy for Manchester United , in 68 appearances. Later that month, he scored the second goal, a powerful strike from 25 yards out that flew into the top corner, in a 2–0 win over Chelsea which helped Liverpool earn a club-record-equaling 26th win for the Premier League campaign; and the club's second-highest ever wins return in the top flight after the record of 30 set in 1979. On 26 April, he made his 100th appearance for Liverpool and broke the record jointly held by Roger Hunt and Sam Raybould for the player with the most goals in his first century of appearances for the club, netting twice in a 5–0 win over Huddersfield Town to take his tally to 69. On 1 June, after missing the semi-final due to injury, Salah scored Liverpool's first goal in a 2–0 win over Tottenham in the 2019 Champions League final from a penalty. Salah's goal, which he scored in the opening two minutes of the match, was the second fastest goal ever scored in a Champions League final, slower only than Paolo Maldini 's effort for AC Milan against Liverpool in the 2005 final. In September 2019, Salah was nominated for the FIFA FIFPro World11 award by worldwide players’ union, FIFPro, and FIFA as one among 55 players. On 9 August 2019, Salah scored Liverpool's second goal in a 4–1 win against Norwich City in the opening game of the 2019–20 Premier League season. In the 2019 UEFA Super Cup on 14 August, Salah scored Liverpool's fifth and ultimately decisive penalty in a 5–4 penalty shoot-out win against Chelsea, after the game had finished 2–2 after extra time . In December, Salah ended fifth in the voting polls for the 2019 Ballon d'Or, and made his 100th Premier League appearance later in the month, marking the occasion with a goal and assist in Liverpool's 3–0 win over Bournemouth. Later that month, Liverpool won the 2019 FIFA Club World Cup, with Salah receiving the Golden Ball award for Player of the Tournament. On 19 January 2020, Salah scored his first goal in five encounters against rivals Manchester United, with a run that spanned from outside his box to the other goal in Liverpool's 2–0 home win in the Premier League. On 29 January, Salah scored Liverpool's opening goal in a 2–0 away win against West Ham, a victory that saw the club beat every team in a Premier League season – the first time in the club's 127-year history that they had accomplished it in the top flight. On 7 March, Salah scored the opening goal in a 2–1 win against Bournemouth as Liverpool made it an English top-flight record of 22 consecutive home wins. It was also his 70th Premier League goal in 100 appearances for Liverpool, meaning that he had scored seven more goals than the previous best in their first 100 league games for the club (63 goals by Fernando Torres). Salah's 20th of the season saw him become the first Liverpool player to score 20 goals in all competitions in three consecutive seasons since Michael Owen between 2000–01 and 2002–03. On 24 June 2020, he scored as Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 4–0 at home, as the team edged closer to securing the title. After Liverpool being confirmed as champions, Salah would go on to score a further two goals (both against Brighton) before lifting the Premier League trophy after a 5–3 victory over Chelsea. On 12 September 2020, Salah scored a hat-trick in the first league match of a season, including two penalties, in a 4–3 win against Leeds United . Hence, he became the first Liverpool player to score in four consecutive league openers from the 2017–18 to 2020–21 seasons, and the second man in Premier League history, after Teddy Sheringham from the 1992–93 to 1995–96 seasons. He also became the first player to score a hat-trick for Liverpool in the first league match since John Aldridge achieved this feat in the 1988–89 season. On 17 October 2020, he scored his 100th goal for Liverpool in all competitions in a 2–2 away draw against Everton . In scoring his 100th goal in his 159th game, Salah became the first player since Steven Gerrard in 2008 to reach the milestone, and the third fastest in Liverpool's history after Roger Hunt (100 goals in 144 games), and Jack Parkinson (153 games). Salah is the fastest to reach 100 goals for Liverpool while scoring purely in England's top flight, given that both Hunt and Parkinson scored some of their goals for Liverpool in the Football League Second Division . On 31 January 2021, Salah scored two goals against West Ham and became the fifth Liverpool player to score more than 20 goals in all competitions in four consecutive seasons, and the first since Ian Rush did so six times running from 1981–82 to 1986–87. In addition, his goal in the 68th minute that game was later voted as Premier League Goal of the Month. On 24 April, he scored in a 1–1 draw with Newcastle United, to become the first Liverpool player to score 20 goals in three different Premier League campaigns. On 13 May, he scored a goal in a 4–2 away win over Manchester United, to be his team's first away win at Old Trafford since March 2014. Moreover, he also became the only player to score at Old Trafford for Liverpool in two different games in a season, having scored twice in a 3–2 defeat in the FA Cup, since Harry Chambers in the 1920–21 season. Salah opened the 2021–22 season with a goal and two assists in a 3–0 win away to Norwich, becoming the first player to score in the opening game of five consecutive Premier League seasons. On 12 September, Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal in the 3–0 win away to Leeds United. On 25 September, Salah scored his 100th Premier League goal for Liverpool in a 3–3 draw away to Brentford . Reaching 100 top-flight goals in fewer games than any player in Liverpool history, he achieved the milestone in 151 games, one game fewer than Roger Hunt who reached a century of goals in 152 games. The goal also moved Salah into Liverpool's top 10 all-time scorers list. On 19 October 2021, Salah became the first player in Liverpool history to score in nine consecutive games with two goals in a 3–2 win away to Atlético Madrid in the Champions League. His second goal, his 31st in the Champions League, saw him become Liverpool's record goalscorer in the competition, surpassing the 30 goals scored by Steven Gerrard. In his next game on 24 October Salah continued breaking records with a hat-trick against Liverpool's arch rivals Manchester United in a 5–0 away victory. In scoring three goals Salah became the highest scoring African player in Premier League history (surpassing the 104 goals scored by Didier Drogba ), and the first Liverpool player to score in ten consecutive games as well as the first Liverpool player to score at Old Trafford three games in a row. He also became the first opposition player to score a hat-trick at Old Trafford since Ronaldo in 2003, and the first to do so in Premier League history. On 3 October 2021, Salah scored a goal against Manchester City after dribbling through their defence. The goal was later named the Premier League Goal of the Month and the Premier League Goal of the Season for 2021–22. On 1 December, Salah scored twice in a 4–1 away win against Everton in the Premier League as Liverpool became the first team in English top-flight history to score at least two goals in 18 successive games in all competitions. On 7 December 2021, Salah scored Liverpool's opening goal in a 2–1 away win against AC Milan at the San Siro as Liverpool became the first English club to win all six Champions League group games in the competition's history. The goal was Salah's 20th of the season and he became the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush to score 20 goals in five successive seasons. On 16 December, Salah scored Liverpool's second goal in a 3–1 home win against Newcastle United, the 15th consecutive Premier League game he either scored or made an assist, in what was Liverpool's 2,000th top-flight win. On 19 February 2022, Salah became the 10th player to score 150 goals in all competitions for the club, and the second fastest (232 matches) after Roger Hunt (226), when he scored the second goal in a 3–1 Premier League win over Norwich at Anfield. On 19 April, Salah became the first Premier League Player to score 5 goals against Manchester United in a single season after scoring a brace in a 4–0 win at Anfield. On 29 April, Salah was named England's Men's Footballer of the Year for the second time since 2018. On 22 May, Salah was awarded his third Golden Boot award at the end of the Premier League 2021–22 season, sharing the award with Son Heung-min after both players scored 23 goals. Salah also won the Playmaker of the Season award after collecting 13 assists. Salah earned a runners-up medal in the 2021–22 Champions League, losing the final to Real Madrid. On 7 January 2023, Salah surpassed Kenny Dalglish for sixth place on the club's all-time top scorers' list, taking his tally for the club to 173 from 280 matches, when he scored the second goal in a 2–2 home draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in the FA Cup. On 21 February, Salah became Liverpool's top goalscorer in European competitions after scoring the second goal of the Champions League match against Real Madrid in the first leg of the round of sixteen. Despite being defeated by Real Madrid in both legs of the round of sixteen and not advancing further in the competition, Salah finished the 2022–23 Champions League as the second-highest goalscorer in the competition, behind only Erling Haaland . Moreover, on 5 March, Salah scored two goals and delivered two assists against Manchester United in a 7–0 win and became Liverpool's all-time top scorer in the Premier League with 129 goals, overtaking Robbie Fowler's tally of 128. Salah also became the first Liverpool player to score against Manchester United in five consecutive games. At the end of the 2022–23 season, Liverpool narrowly missed out on Champions League qualification, with Salah describing himself as "totally devastated". Despite this, Salah was widely praised as one of the best performers in the Premier League that season. In the preseason of the 2023–24 season, Salah was the recipient of a two-year contract offer worth £155m from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad . Had Salah accepted the offer, he would have joined his former teammate Fabinho in Jeddah and Liverpool would have received a £52m transfer fee. However, the agent of Salah, Ramy Abbas Issa, stated on 7 August 2023 that his client was "committed" to Liverpool. On 1 September 2023, Al-Ittihad sent an offer worth £150 million to sign him. On 14 March 2024, he netted a goal in a 6–1 win over Sparta Prague in the Europa League round of 16, in which he became the first player to score at least 20 goals in seven consecutive seasons for Liverpool, breaking Ian Rush's previous record of six between 1981–82 and 1986–87. International career Salah played for both the Egypt national under-20 and under-23 team, representing Egypt in both the 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup and the 2012 Summer Olympics , scoring a penalty against Argentina in the round of sixteen of the former tournament, with Egypt losing the match 2–1. Salah was selected for the Egypt squad to play at the 2012 Summer Olympics scoring in all three of the team's group games. On 19 November, Salah scored the opening goal in a 2–1 away defeat to Tunisia , as Egypt missed out on qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations finals for a third consecutive time. Salah was a member of the Egypt squad for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations held in Gabon. On 25 January, he scored in Egypt's 1–0 win over Ghana to secure first place in Group D. He went all the way to the final with Egypt, scoring twice and assisting two times in six games, earning him a place in the CAF Team of the Tournament . Salah was the top scorer for Egypt with five goals during the 2018 World Cup qualification, including both goals in the decisive 2–1 victory over Congo , one of which was a penalty in the last minute to make the Pharaohs reach their first World Cup finals since the 1990 tournament . Despite doubts over his fitness following his shoulder injury, Salah was included in Egypt's 29-man provisional squad for the 2018 World Cup and was included in their final 23-man squad on 4 June. He missed Egypt's opening match against Uruguay on 15 June, which the Pharaohs lost 1–0, conceding in the 89th minute. On 8 September, in a 6–0 win over Niger in qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations , Salah scored two goals, provided two assists and also missed two penalties. His first penalty, in the first minute of the game, was saved, while the second he converted the loose ball after it was initially saved. On 16 June 2019, Salah provided two assists after coming on as a substitute in 3–1 win over Guinea in friendly warm-up game for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil, wearing the captain's armband for the first time in his international career. On 26 June, Salah scored his first goal of the tournament in Egypt's second group match, a 2–0 win over DR Congo ; he was also involved in the opening goal of the match, which was scored by captain Ahmed Elmohamady . Salah was named as the captain of the Egypt national team in September 2019. In 2021–22, Salah had to face his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mané twice, as Egypt competed against Senegal in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final and third round of 2022 World Cup qualification. On 30 December 2023, he was selected in the 27-man squad for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast. On 14 January 2024, he scored a stoppage-time penalty in a 2–2 draw against Mozambique in the opening match of group stage, becoming the first Egyptian to score in four different AFCON tournaments. Four days later, he sustained a hamstring injury against Ghana, which forced him to withdraw from the competition. Later that year, on 10 June, he earned his 100th international cap, in which he also scored a goal, in a 1–1 away draw against Guinea-Bissau during the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification. Salah and his wife, Maggi, married in 2013. Their daughter, Makka, born in 2014, is named in honour of the Islamic holy city of Mecca . They welcomed a second daughter, Kayan, in 2020. Salah is Muslim and celebrates goals by performing the sujud. On this goal celebration, Salah told CNN , "It's something like praying or thanking God for what I have received, but yeah, it's just praying and praying for a win. I've always done that since I was young, everywhere." Salah enjoys playing football on his PlayStation , and has confessed jokingly that "Salah in the video game is stronger than the real one". Salah has also revealed that his favourite food is kushari , an Egyptian working class dish in origin that is usually made from rice, pasta and lentils and topped with a variety of options including spiced tomatoes, chickpeas and onions. During the 2018 Egyptian presidential election, a large number of spoilt ballot papers, possibly more than a million, involved voters crossing out both names and writing Salah's name instead. Outside football Salah has a sponsorship deal with sportswear and equipment supplier Adidas : he wears a special edition Adidas X Crazyfast+ football boots called Egyptian Nights. He appeared in an Adidas 2018 World Cup commercial along with other players who are also sponsored by them, including David Beckham , Lionel Messi, Paul Pogba and singer Pharrell Williams . In March 2018, Salah appeared in an advertisement for Vodafone Egypt. Filmed visiting several Merseyside landmarks, the video was originally released in Arabic (but was also translated to English). A month later, he mentioned that he was "insulted" after his image was displayed across the national team's plane without his permission before the start of the World Cup that year, as the official sponsor of the national team, WE, is a rival of his sponsor. Salah is active in regeneration projects in Nagrig, his hometown where most people live in poverty, donating money to help build a school and hospital. The project includes the construction of an Al-Azhar institute and an ambulance unit. In an interview with Al-Masry Al-Youm , Salah's father claimed that his son refused to accept any financial assistance with the project. During his time in Egypt, Salah's family was once robbed, however, the thief was caught and arrested by police, with Salah's father preparing to press charges against him, but Mohamed convinced him to drop the case. Afterwards, Salah helped the thief financially, giving him some money and trying to find him a job. In February 2018, following a match against Tottenham, Salah donated a replica shirt to young supporter Mohamed Abdel Karim, who was previously pictured wearing a jumper reading Salah's name and shirt number. Moreover, Mohamed Salah has helped more than 450 families by giving them monthly allowances and he also helped the government by giving approximately $300,000 when the country was experiencing an economic crisis. On 13 August 2022, a fire broke out at Abu Sefein Church in Giza , Egypt, with 41 people losing their lives as a result. Salah subsequently expressed his condolences on social media, and made a donation of three million Egyptian pounds to help rebuild the church. During the 2023 Israel–Hamas war , Salah called for humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Gaza Strip and for the "massacres" and the "slaughter of innocent civilians" to stop. Salah also donated an undisclosed amount to support the Palestinian people . Mohamed Salah Bio Bio of mohamed salah. 1992 Liverpool Mohamed Salah has become of the worlds best wingers and is a legend in the making for Liverpool. But the ‘Egyptian King’ has had his struggles throughout his career. Vavel take a look at the story of the winger and how he has become one of the most recognisable athletes in the world. Salah’s playing career started at Egyptian side, El Mokawloon where he played for the youth side before appearing in the senior team in 2010. During the 2010-11 season, Salah began to play more regularly for El Mokawloon and scored his first goal for them in 2010. The 27-year-old continued to start for El Mokawloon, playing every game in the 2011-12 season. However, the Port Said Stadium riot, which took the lives of 73 people, halted the Egyptian Premier League. On 1 February 2012, the Premier League was suspended and on 10 March 2012 the remainder of the season was postponed.  This led to Salah’s move to Swiss side, Basel. They had been monitoring him for a while and decided to act once the Egyptian Premier League was postponed. Basel organised a friendly game with Egypt’s U-23 and spoke to Salah after the game, showing their interest in the player. Salah was at Basel for two years, playing 47 games. During his time he scored nine goals for then. His performances both in European competitions and in the league, attracted his next club, Chelsea. He helped Basel beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League quarterfinals in 2013, scoring in a 4-1 win on penalties after the game was tied 4-4 on aggregate. Salah scored against more English opposition by scoring in the semi-finals against Chelsea. Basel were ultimately beaten 5-2 after the two legs. The 2013-14 season saw Basel play in the Champions League, where Salah also had a say in important matches. On 18 th  September, he scored the equaliser in a 2-1 win against Chelsea in the group stages. Salah then went on to score in the return leg in November. He scored the only goal in a 1-0 win. In January 2014, Chelsea signed Salah for a reported fee of £11million, making him the first Egyptian to play for Chelsea. However, his Chelsea career did not go as planned.  Salah rarely played at Stamford Bridge, joining the club at a difficult time, with manager at the time, Jose Mourinho receiving a lot of abuse for his side struggling.  Mourinho stated a few years after Salah’s time at Chelsea that he wished things had gone better for him at Stamford Bridge and that he didn’t want to sell him. His first goal for Chelsea came in a famous 6-0 over rivals Arsenal. Salah went on to score only one other goal for Chelsea. On 2 nd February 2015, Salah went out on loan to Fiorentina, in a deal that saw winger, Juan Cuadrado move in the opposite direction.    Salah moved to Roma after his loan move at Fiorentina. He spent two seasons at the Italian club, the first on-loan, and the second on a permanent deal. Roma signed him for around €15million.       Both seasons were successful for the Egyptian, scoring 14 goals in his first season, and 15 in his second. At the end of the 2015-16 season, Salah was named Player of the Season, finishing as Roma’s top goal scorer. Salah was finally beginning to develop into a top winger, and continued his learning at Liverpool. A £34million signing fee sealed his return to the Premier League. This was at the time a record fee for Liverpool. Salah’s first season at Liverpool will go down as one of the best in the Premier League. He started with a goal on his debut in a 3-3 draw with Watford, and went on to score a staggering 43 goals across all competitions in the 2017-18 season. This made him Liverpool’s second-highest goal scorer in a single season, only behind Ian Rush. Salah’s scoring form broke records in the Premier League. He broke the Premier League record for most goals in a 38 game season by scoring 32 goals. This led him to winning the Golden Boot award, as well as receiving many more individual accolades.   Salah won four Player of the Month awards before the turn of the New Year. This season he also won: Liverpool’s Player’s Player of the Year, Liverpool Fan’s Player of the Year, PFA Player’s Player of the Year, PFA Team of the Year, PFA Fan’s Players of the Year, Premier League Player of the Year, BBC African Player of the Year and FWA Player of the Year. Despite the season ending disappointment for the Reds and for Salah, with the winger being forced off in the Champions League final after 30 minutes and Liverpool eventually losing the final to Real Madrid 3-1, there was no denying that Salah would be destined for greatness. A fight for fitness saw him play in the 2018 World Cup for Egypt. The country placed all their hopes of success on him. However Salah could not help Egypt from qualifying. He missed their opening game due to injury but played and scored in the following two. Egypt lost all three games and failed to qualify. Many believed that Salah would fail to hit the same heights as he did in the 17/18 season, but proved that he was not a ‘one season wonder’. He scored 22 goals in the Premier League, ending the season as joint top goal scorer alongside Sadio Mane and Pierre Emerick-Aubaymeyang.   Salah continued to break records for Liverpool. He became the fastest Liverpool player to score 50 goals, doing so in 69 games, beating Fernando Torres to the milestone. Salah also broke the record for the most goals for Liverpool after playing 100 games for the club, scoring 69 goals in that time. Roger Hunt and Sam Raybould previously held this record.  Salah was apart of a Liverpool team that finished second in the Premier League with a staggering 97 points and that won the Champions League. Salah scored the opening goal in the final in Madrid from the penalty spot. So far this season Salah has continued the standard he has set for himself over the last two seasons. In 26 appearances for Liverpool this season, he has 16 goals and has been pivotal to the Reds being 25 points clear at the top of the table. An imminent Premier League title will be well deserved for all the players, but Salah will prove a lot of people wrong with his winners medal. Many wrote Salah off after his misfortunes at Chelsea, but he has proved them all wrong.  In 100 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, he has 70 goals, seven more than Torres who held the record.
