WVU Libraries launches repository for scholarship, creative work and research
West Virginia University Libraries has launched the Research Repository @ WVU , an online, openly available, home for the scholarship, creative work and research of University faculty, researchers and students.
“The Research Repository @ WVU provides the University community with a library-supported platform for sharing their work with the worldwide scholarly community,” said Ian Harmon, scholarly communications librarian.
Harmon said the Research Repository, available at researchrepository.wvu.edu , can increase a work’s impact, provide free access to federally funded research and share findings with researchers and others within West Virginia and around the world who may not be able to afford high journal subscription fees. The Repository is a collaboration between the Libraries and the WVU Office of Research .
“The Research Repository is going to give faculty a place in which they can deposit their work and the public can easily access it,” said Melanie Page, associate vice president for creative and scholarly activities. “We will reach a broader academic and non-academic audience, and thus our impact on the state will be even greater than it currently is.”
Dean of Libraries Karen Diaz considers the Repository as in line with Libraries’ evolving role in supporting WVU’s academic mission.
“The Research Repository @ WVU joins a growing list of similar initiatives happening at academic institutions around the world,” Diaz said. “As we serve our community and the world by preserving and sharing WVU-conducted research, we are also responding to a global call for free access to information, be it a study of literary trends or life-saving discoveries.”
Initially, the Repository will contain the Libraries’ collection of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) , the WVU Law Review and images from the WVU Herbarium . University faculty, staff and students can now submit their scholarly and creative works, publications, working papers, conference presentations, posters, technical reports, datasets and other research. Those who want to submit materials should contact Harmon at [email protected] or fill out a consultation request form .
To assist the process, the Libraries are piloting an arrangement in which librarians will review faculty-provided CVs and publication lists to determine what previously published materials can be uploaded to the Repository. In most cases, Open Access (OA) journals allow authors to deposit copies of their articles in their institution’s repository without restrictions.
OA refers to free online access to digital full-text scientific and scholarly material, primarily research articles published in peer-reviewed journals.
Harmon encourages anyone hesitant to submit their work to request a consultation with a librarian to discuss an issue and explore publishing options. For example, it is possible to embargo an article being published elsewhere.
“It’s important to understand how to manage your publishing rights,” Harmon said. “You own your rights until you say otherwise. You can negotiate those agreements.”
For those interested in learning more about the Repository, the Libraries are offering multiple sessions for two workshops over the next few weeks.
The first program focuses on how the new resource can support one’s work and will be offered Tuesday, Oct. 30, from 4-5 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Library, Room 136; Nov. 7 from 4-5 p.m. in Evansdale Library, Room 130; and Nov. 9 from noon-1 p.m. in the Health Sciences Library, Room LC-1.
The second outlines the process for submitting an ETD to the Research Repository, a requirement of all graduate students who write a thesis, dissertation or problem/project report for their degree program. Session are scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 31, from 4-5 p.m. in the Downtown Campus Library, Room 136; Nov. 8 from 4-5 p.m. in Evansdale Library, Room G16; and Nov. 12 from noon-1 p.m. in the Health Sciences Library, Room LC-3.

Open Access Research Publishing
Open Access (OA) refers to free, immediate, permanent, online access to digital full-text scientific and scholarly material, primarily research articles published in peer-reviewed journals. There are limited copyright and licensing restrictions on open-access articles, meaning that anyone with Internet access may read, download, copy, and/or distribute them. A primary advantage to authors who make their articles openly accessible is that their research impact is maximized due to a wider audience.

Author Fund— Discontinued
The WVU Libraries are committed to providing open access to research for anyone anywhere. In recent years the library has begun engaging in new read and publish agreements that will now have to be the manner in which we contribute financially to helping campus authors publish openly. The Libraries encourage you to include publication fees in grant requests and use University funding, such as the Eberly College Subvention Fund whenever possible. From 2016-2023, we offered an Open Access Author Fund (OAAF) which has been retired. Please see the above resources to support your open access publishing.
Predatory Journals
Beware of journals seeking your contributions via e-mail and then levying a fee for publication. These journals will not be listed in the Directory of Open Access Journals and will not have signed on to the various open access initiatives. Other warning signs:
- Very short turn-around time for peer review; comments from the editors are general and do not address specific problems, improvements, and concerns.
- The author fee is too high or too low. The industry standard is $1,000 to $5,000
- There is no editorial board listed on the page, or the credentials of the board do not match the subject area of the journal.
- An international journal is more suspect.
- The publisher does not match the agency receiving the funds; the publisher’s name is generic or is very close to a well-known organization.
- The title is close to a well-known reputable journal. For example, The Journal of Physical Education and Sports Medicine is very close to The Journal of Physical Education and Sport Medicine .
- The journal is new; volume 1 is within the last few years.

External research expenditures in fiscal year 2024 were $40.1 million, a significant increase from the fiscal year 2020 total of $23.3 million. The increase in expenditures was accompanied by an increase in the number of sponsored awards received by faculty.
“Research dollars provide necessary ways and means to allow faculty and students to pursue their adventure on scientific discovery and engineering development,” said Xingbo Liu , associate dean for research and professor in mechanical, materials and aerospace engineering department .
In recent years, the Statler College has made outstanding advancements in smart grid technologies, energy solutions, decarbonization, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, robotics, water infrastructure and more.
"These figures are just one way to measure the growth and impact of the groundbreaking research conducted in the Statler College," said Pedro Mago , Glen H. Hiner Dean of the Statler College. “Research is a core part of the College's mission, and I am extremely proud of the hard work and dedication of our faculty, staff and students. These efforts drive innovation and economic growth and provide a wide variety of opportunities for our students while also training the next generation of experts who will create a better future for all.
As an R1 – or very high research activity — classified institution, WVU ranks amongst the most elite research universities in the United States. Research in the College has remained one of the university-wide contributing factors to this classification.
For the past three years, the College has been ranked in the Top 100 of the National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Expenditure survey, which includes institutional research expenditures in addition to externally supported research. In the latest NSF survey, based on fiscal year 2022, the Statler College reported $45.5 million in research and development expenditures. With the considerable growth in research expenditures, this figure is expected to increase significantly in the upcoming survey, which is scheduled for release next year.
The boost in research funds has not only enhanced research and innovation efforts but has also bolstered engineering education initiatives. This has created more opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students, greatly improving the student experience and retention in the fields of engineering and computer science and supporting the college recruitment efforts.
"Such advancements are made possible by our talented faculty and students who develop new technologies to address societal challenges," Mago explained. "A prime example is the recognition of seven faculty members and their research through the prestigious NSF CAREER awards and one with the NASA Early Career Faculty award over the past three years. This is an incredible achievement, and I am extremely proud of the outstanding work happening at the College. I look forward to what the future brings."
