After nearly 14 years of parenting and four kids, I’m a total convert to the idea of ‘bringing the grandparents’ on holiday. From helping the kids discover new passions to saving money (and my sanity), here’s how travelling with grandparents works for us…

People love to say that parenting changes you, and they’re right. Somehow, I’ve become that person. The one who only wants to go on holiday with my husband’s parents, aka my kids’ grandparents.

I know, I know. I’m as surprised as anyone. But increasingly, I’m realising there are myriad benefits to multi-generational holidays, for parents, kids and grandparents alike.

As a mother to four kids aged six to 13, family holidays have long been a gamble. On the one hand, there’s so much to look forward to: Sunshine! Relaxation! Glorious sibling harmony!

On the other hand, there’s reality. Car sickness. Airport delays. How insanely expensive everything is. Sisterly squabbles that escalate into screaming, physically violent, extremely public, rows.

For years, due to the expense and hassle, we didn’t bother trying to go away with our brood. But now that our kids are all school-aged, we’re tentatively venturing further afield, whether that’s visiting my half-sister in Munich or seeking out winter sun in Miami. (I’m originally from New York City, but no longer have family or a family home there; Miami feels like a happy compromise that’s both familiar and an adventure at once.)

We’ve also started exploring the UK on trips with my in-laws. On the drive home from our third consecutive May half-term getaway to north Norfolk (Blakeney, Holt, Cley, Holkham, etc.), the mood in the car was glorious. The kids were relaxed and giggling; my husband smiled and cracked jokes at the wheel. Best of all, I felt invigorated. I’d relaxed properly, sleeping well past 8 am daily, consuming an entire novel poolside, and not lifting a finger to cook a single meal or do a load of washing for four whole days.

It hit me then: we’d achieved a getaway that finally felt like a “holiday.” Even more shockingly, we’d had grey skies and storms our entire trip. Which meant the secret ingredient to holiday bliss wasn’t the weather but something else.

I’m pretty sure it was the presence of my children’s grandparents.

Our multi-gen holiday set-up works for all parties. From a parental perspective, it allows us to split the load of child-caring (as well as travel costs, e.g. our older kids stay with their grandparents so we end up paying for one hotel room instead of two).

Our larger group size means we can mix and match who we spend time with throughout the day, dividing up into various couples and trios to allow everyone the chance to do what they like, whether that’s trawling vintage shops, going to the beach, checking out historical sites or playing golf.

Crucially, this setup ensures all parties (siblings, married couples, parents and their kids) have breaks from each other when tensions arise. My husband and I even get the occasional snippet of one-on-one time – a drink on the terrace at sunset, a workout in the gym side by side – to enjoy each other’s company.

If you’re thinking your family is far too difficult, that vacationing en masse would never happen even under extreme duress, I understand the sentiment. My family dynamic is complicated (culturally, too – I’m American; my in-laws are English), and our relationship has the added strain that comes from being the only relationship my kids have with any grandparents. My mother died in my early 20s; my father has always been more or less estranged from me. Though I feel immense love and gratitude towards my in-laws, I’m also desperately sad that my kids will never know my mother.

'Skip-gen travel' and multi-generational travel are having a moment

We’re far from the only family in the UK (and beyond) going on holiday with grandparents. In fact, the practice has become so popular, it’s considered a “top travel trend” of 2024.

Across the pond, you’ll see references to “skip-gen travel”: this involves grandparents taking the kids on holiday while parents stay home (and work). An AARP Research survey on “Grandparents Today” found that 40 per cent take their grandkids on holidays and spend an average of $1,746 a year on these trips.

Multigenerational travel – travelling with kids, adult kids and grandparents – is also on the rise post-pandemic. A 2023 Family Travel Association (FTA) Annual Family Travel Survey of 3,300 parents and grandparents found that 50 per cent took a multigenerational holiday in the past three years. (And 40 per cent of those surveyed were planning to take one in the next three years.)

Even travel providers are getting in on the action: in February 2024, easyJet launched a ‘Grans Go Free’ offering on flights to European destinations like Greece and Spain, in response to a poll of over 2,000 Brits, which found 51 per cent of families had never holidayed with grandparents abroad.

Various studies have shown that the benefits go both ways when it comes to kids spending time with their grandparents: grandparents not only play a positive role when it comes to encouraging healthy emotions in grandkids they have close relationships with , they can help support the mental health of mothers if they live nearby.

Conversely, a strong connection with grandchildren (and getting tech-savvy when it comes to digital communication), can reduce loneliness for older people living further away from their kids and grandkids.

According to government figures in the UK, one in four working families use grandparents for childcare (63% of all grandparents with grandchildren under 16 help out with childcare). Clearly, grandparents are indispensable to families when it comes to plugging childcare gaps and helping ease the immense costs of returning to work with young children.

However, I’m pretty sure one big reason we find travelling with the kids’ grandparents so enjoyable is that we aren’t currently reliant on them for weekly childcare. From past experience, I know how amazing it can be to have energetic and committed grandparents who live close enough to help with early-years children... but differing viewpoints and expectations can massively impact family dynamics.

These days, the set-up works especially well because it feels like a treat, not a chore, for everyone to have the chance to spend time together in a different setting.

Tips for a multi-gen holiday with grandparents

There are no hard or fast rules for making a family getaway with the grandparents in tow successful, but I do think certain ingredients have helped us.

Here are some tips for multi-generational travel I’ve picked up over the years.

The type of holiday has to suit everyone

After the pandemic, we really wanted to spend more quality time with our kids’ grandparents, which felt impossible to do at home without distraction.

We found a kid-friendly option and headed to Saunton Sands beach in Devon for a long weekend over May half-term in 2021. We learned a lot: 1) my husband hates beach holidays and 2) there are basically no standard-sized hotel rooms equipped to fit our family.

But, if we split the kids up and our two older girls bunked with their grandparents, we could manage the admin side of things. This also helped with bedtime negotiations, and bonus, we’d only be paying for one hotel room as a result.

The following year, we decided to try somewhere closer to London, budget-friendlier and with beaches as an additional attraction instead of the main one: the northern coast of Norfolk. With its mix of creature comforts, cultural destinations, and natural beauty, it appealed to us all in different ways.

'Repeat travel' works best

Whether you’re a family that loves to go camping and exploring in nature or enjoys discovering the cuisines and cultures of a new country, there is something to be said for “repeat travel” – going back to the same place year after year – when travelling with youngsters.

Knowing that we’ll be going to the same destination, with the same people, at the same time of year has done wonders for quelling my kids’ travel anxieties – you can almost feel a collective intake of soothing breath as our car approaches the Blakeney quay. These trips have all the excitement of a getaway and change of scene, with the calming familiarity of knowing the lay of the land.

All of us discuss our stay in advance and plan it around a few touchstones (aka non-negotiable must-dos): cycling around the grounds of Holkham Hall, my husband taking one of the kids golfing at the local course, and scouring the racks of the amazing Oola Boola vintage shop in Holt, where we always emerge with our arms full of retro treasures. This year, my mother-in-law kindly purchased a couple of goodies for my kids from there, too.

Feeling confident and comfortable in our surroundings also allows for flexibility and venturing further afield, to try a new beach or explore a village we haven’t visited before.

It’s also how we start to forge new traditions with grandparents. My in-laws’ favourite pastime on holidays is going around stately homes and old churches and my eight-year-old daughter was enthusiastic about joining them this year. She’s adamant that the Sunday church service was the best part of her whole trip (which may or may not have something to do with the 25 biscuits she consumed afterwards).

Indoor entertainment is key

One of the more exhausting things about holidays with kids is the pressure to constantly be out and about, doing something fabulous… especially when the weather has other plans. It’s amazing how much indoor activities like table tennis or a hotel with a pool can make all the difference – while also giving a couple of adults in the group a chance to unwind and relax.

On our last trip, we got into the most wonderful routine of playing games every evening after dinner – one child would play chess with her grandfather, while another group enjoyed a Tate Art Collector card game where you acquire and trade works of art to build your “collection,” supplied by my mother-in-law. The kids are now busy planning a museum trip with her to see the artworks in person in London.

Relax into it

It has taken me many years and tantrums (not just the kids’ ones, but also mine), but I’ve finally got there: I’ve let go of trying to control every element of parenting, especially when it comes to other people looking after my kids.

True joy as a parent isn’t what you see in the perfect sun-dappled family holiday photo. It’s reaching the point where you no longer stress about taking that photo… because you’re too busy smiling as your kids try to beat their grandfather at table tennis.

What I love most about going on holiday with my kids’ grandparents is that they help me remember that a family holiday is about learning to say “yes” – to ice creams, video games on car trips, and letting the kids stay up way too late.

In the afternoon, my brother and I took a round of the village and delivered lunch at my uncle’s shop. The rest of the afternoon was spent in slumber after having a heavy diet and loads of gossip.

The evening time in the village was the time for which I waited with a lot of excitement. One evening we went to the village well where women went to fetch drinking water. It was great to see them balance the pots full of water and walk back in a row. But the main treat was to see the confidence and happiness on their faces. The village also encompassed a big playground that used to be full of kids during the evening hours.

Our aunt and uncle also took us to the farm to show us the beautiful process of growing and nurturing fruits and vegetables. Looking at the farmers putting so much effort into their harvest and faces during the harvesting time was a great sight.

I also went to one of the panchayats going on in the village under a banyan tree, where issues of the village were being solved by the elders of the village with the consent of all other people of the village. This is where I witnessed a small example of democracy.

The simplicity of life in the village is where its beauty lies. My visit to the village always teaches me compassion and love towards our family.

We visited the Footloose Discotheque, full of vibrant people and buzzed with great music.

Our next day included traveling on the toy train. This toy train here runs from Kalka to Shimla. There are only 3 such trains in our country, and one of them is here. It’s an amusing experience to travel through them irrespective of the fact that they are slow. The evening was spent doing snow adventures such as skiing and bungee jumping.

The next days were spent visiting places near Shimla, such as Chail, Kufri, and Chitkul. These places can be visited for some snow adventure besides enjoying their beautiful scenic beauty.

Shimla is also a good treat for foodies like me. A bizarre thing about Shimla’s food is – that tiny diners or cafes are offering just fast food, a variety of teas and cold drinks, or fancy eateries that have overpriced alcohol on the menus – there is no ground in between. We had salami burgers at Beekays, which were delicious.

During all these days filled with loads of activities to do, we used to get tired in the evening, but the nightlife there or just staring at the starry sky gave us an immense sense of joy and filled us with new energy. There is enchanting music from tall trees standing upright there, curvy roads that make one look at those beautiful hills from all angles, and that lively breeze that fills one’s soul and heart with ecstasy.

We came back to Delhi after spending five fun-filled days in Shimla. The memory of this trip is fresh in my head. Shimla is indeed the queen of hill stations. I would love to revisit the place.

My parents, siblings, and cousins surrounded me. There was excitement on everyone’s face. Being a full extended family vacation with all my cousins, aunts, and uncles, it seemed super fun from the time we set out in cabs to the airport. It was not my first time being amidst the clouds, but it was my first international flight giving a magnificent view of the night lights of the complete city, and looking at that, I knew that this trip was going to be a one-of-a-kind experience for me.

Landing in Hong Kong, I was taken aback by the mere sight of their airport. I think they lived to the “first impression is the last impression.” I was amazed beyond imagination, but somewhere, I knew this was just the beginning. The first day at this beautiful place mainly consisted of exploring the streets of this breathtaking city, which was rich in fashion, food, tech, and everything that screamed modern and at the same time archaic in their way of life.

The next place we visited was what all of us had dreamed of visiting for a long. It was the mesmerizing Disneyland. The first thing that caught my attention was not the people around dressed in Disney characters or the marvelous expanse of the space and rides and shops but the castle at the far end – The Disney Castle. It was just spectacular. The very charm and enchantment of it knocked me out of breath. The fireworks at night after a complete parade show make you wonder if you had crossed a line and entered the fantasy world. It had been much more than I imagined, even in my make-believe.

The next was a traveling day as we moved to our next destination Malaysia. The City gateway was the complete opposite of where we came from. This city did not have many skyscrapers, but the beautifully spread horizontal city was rich in culture and diversity. The exquisiteness of mosques, museums, and heritage sites perfectly blend with the city’s modern lifestyle and layout. The hilltop parts of the country, like Genting Highlands, could be called heaven on earth. The beaches here offer a perfect place to relax and rejuvenate. I am glad we choose this as our last destination during this trip.

This has been one of the best holidays I have ever gone on. I saw so many beautiful places, had great experiences, and spent a lot of time with my loving family. My last summer vacation was indeed the best so far.

The journey started with a visit from my town to my ancestral village and then to a wildlife reserve, which I am sure you too will plan to go on this vacation, after going through my experiences.

At Village with my Grandparents

The journey began on the next day of my summer vacation. My father made these arrangements well in advance, supposedly when I was preparing for my exams. When I came back home after writing my last exam, my mother and sister were already packing for the journey. Though I knew we would visit our grandparent’s village and stay there for a couple of days, I had no idea about the further planned trip.

The journey to the village was smooth. We started well ahead of the train’s arrival time and reached the platform before its arrival time. It is three hours of a train journey from my city to the grandparent’s village, passing through lush green agricultural fields and glimpses of village life.

When we got off the train, I saw my grandfather waving and walking toward us, accompanied by my cousins. After exchanging initial greetings, we walked towards our house a couple of kilometers from the station. Though there is a road to reach the house, we took rather secluded trails, passing through the fields.

Something is mesmerizing about an Indian villages ; the cool breeze, the peace and calm, the smell and sound of cattle, and the distant sound of a pumping set from the fields entices you and makes you cherish every passing moment.

The food, milk, and even water taste much better in the village than in the city. We stayed in the village for four days, during which I met many of my relatives, elders, and friends from the village. I even went to our family’s agricultural field and learned a few tips for farming. Four days passed quickly, and the day soon arrived when we had to move on a further journey. However, it appeared that a few surprises were waiting for me.

Trip to the Dudhwa National Park

When the day arrived, I was in for two surprises firstly, that we were going to “Dudhwa National Park” and secondly that my grandparents were also going with us.

Dudhwa tiger reserve is a protected area spanning over 1280 sq km in Uttar Pradesh. It stretches across the districts of Lakhimpur Kheri and Bahraich, sharing the northeastern boundary with Nepal.

We boarded the train to Bareilly from Varanasi, an unforgettable overnight journey spent with family and like-minded wildlife enthusiasts, traveling to the same destination as us. From Bareilly, we took a connecting train to Dudhwa, which is approximately a distance of 12 kilometers.

We reached the park in the evening and stayed in a simple yet comfortable resort, having all the comforts and basic amenities. The staff was accommodating, and the food was simply delicious. The resort was securely surrounded by forest on all s, use and was well guarded. We fell to sleep listening to the voices of jungle fowls and animals from a distance.

The next morning we all woke up early and got ready for the jungle safari. The forest deforests deforest department organized the safari in anth a guard and an experienced guide onboard. As soon as we entered the forest, we started seeing birds and animals, which we had only seen in books and television. Birds like Bengal Florican and great slaty woodpecker were a delight to watch. Different species of lizards were also seen crawling to cover.

As we progressed deeper, many species of deer- swamp deer, barasingha, and chital came into view. We were also lucky enough to spot barking deer, which is very difficult due to its shy nature. We were lucky enough to spot a tiger lurking in the bushes on our third and last day. With this last sighting, our journey ended, and we headed back home on the same evening.

Summer vacation is the best time in any student’s life. A month or more of a fun time at your disposal is nothing less than a blessing. There are several ways to spend a summer vacation, although we must spend it in such a way that we learn new things and gain new experiences. Also, take care not to harm or disregard anyone during your enjoyment.

When I was very young, before age 6, I spent many weekends with my grandparents. At bedtime, my grandmother would sit beside my bed and read to me from a book of fairy tales. I still remember, after all these years, listening intently to Little Red Riding Hood , Sleeping Beauty , Puss and Boots , and many others.

Just thinking about these magical times brings tears to my eyes. I felt safe, warm, and loved. As I write this, it occurs to me that my interest in the human psyche was very likely sparked by these early experiences with my grandmother. In this youth-oriented culture, we often fail to appreciate the significant contributions that grandparents make to the lives of their grandchildren and vice versa.

Yet, in the wake of the COVID epidemic and the recent inflationary financial pressures, more children are living with their grandparents in multigenerational households. As a result, more children are spending time with their grandparents. How has this impacted grandparents and grandchildren?

It is not easy for a parent to transition to the role of a grandparent. Becoming a grandparent requires adapting to a new social role, usually during late midlife . It is associated with adopting new beliefs and behaviors that may interfere with long-established practices, such as having a tidy home or watching TV after dinner. It requires what may be perceived as "sacrifices."

However, in contrast to earlier American findings that implied that childcare was burdensome, a 2018 Flinders University, Australia, study of 262 female and 168 male grandparents across the first two years of their transition to grandparenthood found more time spent babysitting the grandchild was associated with improvement in mental health.

In this respect, research focusing on the association between grandparents' use of the internet and grandchild care is instructive. The authors of the study observe that using the internet to maintain ties with families and friends helps older adults foster family cohesion, which in turn enhances senior Chinese women's life satisfaction and health to a greater extent than men's.

This avenue of communication is especially important for grandmothers in rural areas whose adult children have migrated to work in cities. Thus, parent-child contact through the internet is likely stronger among females than males, and females benefit more from internet use than males. Of course, these findings are as relevant here as they are to China.

Other studies from China, where parent-grandparent co- parenting is very common, have found that when parents and grandparents get along, the benefits for all involved are considerable. The majority of families in this study lived in three-generational households, and 80 percent of families had only one child. Mothers who maintained strong co-parenting bonds with their children's grandparents, primarily grandmothers, often experienced a greater sense of effectiveness in their parental roles.

The study's authors elucidate that grandparents, drawing upon their wealth of parenting experience, can offer valuable support, set positive examples, and provide encouragement when they engage in child-rearing collaborations. This, in turn, can impact the level of confidence that mothers feel in their parenting responsibilities.

When mothers exude greater self-assurance , they tend to approach parenting with increased positivity and perseverance, ultimately contributing to their children's improved social development. These enriching interactions can remove some of the guilt parents may feel for being absent all day or sometimes for longer periods.

Interacting with grandchildren can help keep them both physically and mentally active. Looking after grandchildren often involves physical activities like dressing, playing, walking, or doing more laundry. Grandparents can benefit from increased socialization as they engage with their grandchildren's friends, teachers, and other parents. This will serve as an antidote to loneliness or isolation, a frequent occurrence among older people.

Grandparents often have the opportunity to share their knowledge, wisdom , and family traditions with their grandchildren. Such early experiences strengthen a grandchild's self-esteem and reinforce beliefs, norms, and values while creating opportunities to explore identity in the context of one's family.

Recent research suggests that grandparent involvement during childhood , conceptualized as the amount of contact and emotional closeness, is positively linked to emotional development, cognitive functioning, and social adjustment in early adulthood. The lessons learned from grandparent-grandchild relationships in childhood, especially those related to spirituality and moral development, persist into early adulthood.

A study from the Institute for Engaged Aging, Clemson University, South Carolina, concluded that past and present grandparent relationships remain salient in early adulthood. These results echo previous research in which gratitude , respect, and appreciation were found to be significant factors in the well-being of young adults. This finding holds across all types of grandparents. In the face of challenging family dynamics, these participants cited lessons learned from their grandparents as significant building blocks in their current perspectives on life.

With this study being conducted amid a global pandemic, many grandchildren discussed the emotional difficulty of being physically separated from grandparents, especially those with progressing illnesses (e.g., dementia , cancer). The majority of participants maintained regular, and at times even increased, contact with their grandparents as a result of the pandemic.

Sometimes, family issues can get in the way of harmonious transgenerational relationships, whether initiated by one or the other side. While all my friends were getting excited about the weekend that they would see their grandparents, I never understood them. To me, there was nothing to talk about when they were talking about their grandparents.

Not that I had no grandparent, but we just never visited them. All our weekend would be spent on outdoor activities like children’s sports as we wait for holiday camping.

We never had any story to tell about our grandparents. Well, my elder siblings used to tell me that they used to visit granny when they were young. Nobody told me why they stopped.

However, the stories my classmates would tell about their experience with their grannies made me curious, wanting to have a story to tell too. So I asked mum that she take me to see them. Unexpectedly, she promised to take me over the next weekend. What a fun moment did I have!

I guess mum had told my grandparents about the visit, so they were eager to see us. Everything was wonderful. The first thing that took my attention is the type of traditional food that granny made for us.

I won’t say that mammy does not make us delicious food, but then the food I took that day was friendlier to my mouth. I loved the fact that she entertained by being in the kitchen.

I now understand why all that my friend talks about when it comes to their grandparents is food. Well, they have other stories, but when it comes to food, everyone wants to talk.

The weekend gave me a break from the baked food that we are used to at home. My grandmother noticed that I was so entertained about the food and so she packed the rest for me. What generous granny!

Another thing that made my day was how my grannies were able to give me stories, some fiction, while other real-life stories. For the first time, I spent a whole day without thinking about where my tab was for games.

The stories were so fascinating with lots of lessons. Even for the ones that seemed factious, they would talk about is as though they were present when the scene was taking place.

I loved the zeal that they had. I realized that most of the stories that my grandfather had been more of war-related, while those that my grandmother had been more of family and religious related.

In of the significant thing that I learned was that at times things happens in life that at times can make you doubt whether you will come out of it and smile.

I also enjoyed playing around with my grandparent’s pets. Wow! I am still thinking about Petra, my grannies’ doggy. This dog would run from one end of the compound to another as we play around with my cousin’s ball.

I realized he used loved playing around with the ball as though chasing me but on a jockey ground. This took the better part of my day since the compound was fascinating. I am not a cat lover, so I didn’t mind about the pet cat whom some people would call pretty.

I loved the whole day at my grandparents’ place. If mommy makes a joke about going back, I think I will spend the entire night doing my homework to make the proposed day free.

I have not been able to stop talking about the day. Every time we are storing as a family, I tend to get attracted to the memories I brought home. I am hoping that I will get such a change soon.

As the first day of my summer vacations started, I started getting bored easily. Mostly so because all my friends had gone to someplace or the other. My parents noticed this and decided to send me to a summer camp. Our school itself was organizing one in which my parents got me enrolled.

At first, I thought it would be of no use and would be equally boring. However, to my surprise, I was wrong. The summer camp was one of the best experiences of my life. I got the chance to indulge in so many activities and in fact, it was the first time where I discovered my talent for painting.

We got up early in the morning at 7 o’clock, despite no school. We had trainers who would teach us different things each day. On the first day, I got to learn karate, which was very amusing and helpful. Further, I learned how to play sports like basketball , table tennis, and volleyball.

Finally, came my most awaited part. We were taught painting and unique tips to master this art. I learned it quickly and started enjoying painting. My passion for painting began from this summer camp , and I will forever be indebted to it.

My Grandparents’ Place

After my summer camp ended, my whole family decided to visit my grandparent’s village . It is situated away from the city and is full of lush and greenery. I love spending time with my grandparents so I was very excited to visit their village.

We stayed there for over two weeks, and that throughout that time, I was at my best behavior. I used to get up at 7 o’clock in the morning to take a stroll with my grandfather. Then all the family members would get together to have breakfast full of healthy things and fresh fruits from the farm nearby.

In the evening, we would sit by our grandmother’s bed and listen to stories. Then, my siblings and I used to go to the terrace and play games. We would also gaze at their stars all night, as we did not get that in the city.

In short, this is how I spent my summer vacation. It was definitely one of the best times of my lives. I got to learn new things and spend valuable time with my grandparents. I feel blessed to have a loving family with whom I can enjoy my summer vacation.

It's best for an adult, such as one of your parents to remind your grandparent to take medication.

Spending Time with Your Grandparents

Step 2 Pamper up with your grandparents.

Ask your parents if there are any nearby salons or clothing stores to go to with your grandparents. If there aren't, you may need adults to help take you there. If that's not possible, take care at home.

Holidays with grandparents, have you done them? It’s that time of year when I start thinking about our next family holiday. The days are long and gloomy and most days when I get home from work I am windswept, tired and lethargic. The thought of sun, sea and sand holds a huge appeal and for a while now, we have discussed the concept of taking my Dad away with us. Since my Mum passed away in 2014, my Dad has only taken one holiday abroad and he found it extremely difficult. He struggled with going solo, eating alone in restaurants and being surrounded by loved up couples where ever he went. He struggled with the familiarity of places he had been with Mum but was anxious going somewhere new, and as such, he found himself in a quandary where it has just become easier to stay at home.

Considerations for your family holiday

There are also a few extra added complications in that since Dad’s heart attack in 2009 , he has to be a little more cautious about his travel arrangements. Travelling with a medical condition also means he has to be a little careful about the destination – making sure the flights aren’t too long (due to the increased risk of deep vein thrombosis), that the temperatures aren’t too extreme, and that there is nothing too strenuous when it comes to activity levels (not that he needs to worry about this one with me!). Managed properly, however, there is absolutely no reason why my Dad can’t still enjoy holidays abroad with his family, if only we could convince him to come.

There are obvious pros and cons to holidays with the grandparents, and therefore a few things to think about before we commit. These are my current thoughts.

Pros of holidays with grandparents:

Companionship and conversation – one of the things I know my Dad misses the most is eating meals with other people. He lives at home alone for the majority of the week, and other than nights out and family dinners on a Sunday, the majority of his meals are for one. He loves the banter and laughter we have over the meal table, and being able to have someone to chat to whilst he checks out the local cuisine would be a real plus for him. From our perspective, taking Dad away with us for a holiday with grandparents also gives us time to talk and enjoy his company, away from the normality of everyday life at home, and he wouldn’t need to be the one cooking for a change!
Making memories – my Dad loves spending time with the girls and often comments how much they have changed even if I haven’t seen him for just a week or two. They change so quickly at this young age, and Dad rarely gets to spend such a significant amount of time with them in one back to back period. Dad loves sharing knowledge, teaching the girls new things, and watching them learn, and with some of my fondest memories being of holidays with my Dad, it would be lovely to involve him creating similar memories with Erin and Neve.
Parents night off – Holidays with grandparents offer some time off for the parents! If Dad came away with us, at some point during the week he would offer to stay in with the girls whilst they were asleep whilst we had some time out as a couple alone. From his point of view, he’d be quite content sat on the balcony with a beer and a book, and it would be a huge bonus to have some much needed child-free time; where the topic of conversation didn’t have to include poo, bogies or LOL surprise *not necessarily in that order*.
Standard of Accommodation – splitting the cost between a larger pool of guests by having holidays with grandparents means that we may be able to get better quality or larger living space without needing to spend more money. Whilst saving money on holiday s isn’t my only concern, it helps where possible!

Cons of holidays with grandparents;

Itinerary – There may be differences in our ideal holiday. What Dad wants to do compared to what we want to do may be quite significantly different. For him, the idea of sitting around sunbathing whilst watching the girls splash around in the pool may sound utterly boring, whereas for me, it sounds like absolute bliss. He is more likely to want to learn about the culture and history of the location, go on scenic walks and explore the local surroundings, whereas for me, wearing anything other than flip flops and a swimsuit is likely to be too much like hard work! 🙂 – That said, I think it’s completely OK to not spend every single hour of the day together. One of the thoughts I like most about taking him away with us is that Dad would still be free to go and do what he enjoys, but with the ability to come back together later in the day, offering what I feel is the best of both worlds.
Medical needs – Travelling with someone with health conditions can add some extra logistical challenges. Whether it’s travelling with oxygen, transporting an oxygen concentrator , arranging special travel insurance or special transport when you reach your destination, it’s better to do your research and understand all the requirements and associated costs before you go.
Parenting Style – My Dad at times is a bit of an ‘old school’ parent and is from the generation where the message was children should be seen and not heard. He adores the girls; but if they get too hyper or overexcited, he tends to get a slightly furrowed brow and look slightly uncomfortable. There is a slight concern that this difference in mindset may prove difficult in close quarters and I may have to bite my tongue a bit!!
Personal space – Dad is used to living alone, and as such, he lives in a tidy, quiet and very calm environment. On the contrary, we live in an often messy, noisy and somewhat chaotic environment, and with no ability to escape to our happy places, the two extremes might not work well together. That said, we could consider two apartments close together to maintain private living areas or a larger size accommodation where any noise can be kept away from where my Dad may be sleeping or resting.

There is obviously a lot to think about, and at this stage, I am not even sure if he would agree, but it’s something we want to explore further. I’d be interested to know from those who have done it; how did you find holidays with the grandparents?

My grandparents are really special to me. I hold them in high esteem. They have done beyond and over for me. I will always be thankful for all of their help and kindness. They are the sort of individuals with whom you can discuss anything, even sensitive or confidential matters. In addition to being a buddy, my grandfather is also the finest teacher I have ever had. He has taught me all I know today. He made learning enjoyable for me and never gets upset with me when I mess up. He played a part in helping me realise my goals.

My grandparents are adorable, kind, wise, and understanding. They have always taught me to respect elders and taught me how to live an honourable and prosperous life. They serve as my role model and have always supported me in all aspects of my life. They give their insights that can direct me toward living a good life. I don't have to worry about anything because they are helping me make decisions. My grandparents are 70 and 73 years old, respectively. They still appear to be young in heart and do not appear to be as elderly as other persons their age. They read books, newspapers, and magazines frequently, which contributes to their strong general knowledge.

Why I Love Them

I feel really fortunate to have such kind, endearing, and special grandparents. Every day I learn a lot of new things. They serve as my inspirations. Therefore, they are older now, they still serve as the foundation of our family. I respect my grandparents because they instilled moral principles and ideals that have aided me in everyday life. They both take great care of their physical and mental well-being. They constantly practise yoga and meditation to stay active at their age. They have always cared about my health and urged me to live a healthy lifestyle.

My grandparents' personalities are fascinating. They were always an important role model for me. Throughout the day, they are energetic and active constantly. Everyone in our family adores them. They have a limitless affection for us. They frequently interact with others with a lot of love and caring.

My grandfather regularly takes early walks. He speedily crosses our neighbourhood park every morning as soon as he gets out of bed. He returns and settles down to read one of his favourite books on the lawn. My grandparents share their tales with me. I can never feel down when they are around. My grandparents were the ones who first instilled in me the value of comedy. They both significantly contributed to my character development, and I am grateful to have them in my life.

I seemed to have great luck growing up at my grandparents' home. Since I was a child, our family has lived with my grandparents. I only have a few recollections of my paternal grandpa because he went away when I was a very little child. He used to clean his teeth twice a day without fail. I developed this practice and have continued to do so ever since.

My real support systems have been my maternal grandparents. I am privileged to have been raised by such wonderful people. My grandpa constantly emphasised the value of education because he was a college principal. When my parents were away, he helped us with my homework.

Similarly, my grandparents greeted me with open arms every time me and family visited them. Every holiday, they used to wait for us to come. We loved the delicious dinners and pickles that my grandma cooked. She also taught me several recipes and helpful advice that I still use today. I appreciate my grandparents for teaching moral principles to both my parents and me and for providing a secure environment for us to grow up in.

I learned the fundamental principles of life from my grandparents. They have taught me the true meaning of goodness, love, and affection. They boosted my willpower and helped me become a better person. They are incredibly dear to me. And he has improved our life in so many different ways. I appreciate having them near me.

I Love My Grandparents

I never needed to form friends because my grandparents were my best friends. Thus I never felt the urge to do so. They protected me from my parents whenever I did something wrong. Together, we played many indoor and outdoor activities like cricket, Ludo, and hide and seek.

My granddad and I ride bikes around the neighbourhood and to the park. When I'm bored, he is always willing to play with me. He sings songs and gives me general advice. My grandmother is a positive person. She always smiles and is ready to make what I desire. I enjoy making jokes with them and getting pampered by them. My grandmother taught me how to behave appropriately and looked after me when I was ill. My grandfather buys all the foodstuffs I like.

No-Stress Grandparenting During the Holidays

Explore these 7 ways to approach the Christmas season so you can enjoy and focus on grandparenting during the holidays.

Have you ever said, “Why don’t our kids and grandkids come to our house for Christmas? They stayed with their other grandparents last Christmas!” or “Why do we have to go there? Why can’t they travel here once in a while?” Grandparenting during the holidays can be tough.

But as a grandparent, you know that it may not be easy to get the opportunity to see your grandchildren during the holidays. Though it’s rarely possible for everyone to get what they want, you can take on the attitude of the apostle Paul, who encouraged us to look not only to our own interests, but also to the interests of others ( Philippians 2:4 ).

Here are some ways to put that verse into practice and enjoy Christmas and your grandkids:

Remember Your Role During the Holidays

While you have an important role in the lives of your adult children and grandkids, it is a supportive role. This is one of the harder parts of growing older — adjusting to your changing role in the family. As a grandparent, you get to provide love, wisdom and encouragement to your grandchildren. And as a parent, your job now is to support and bless your adult children — which includes offering understanding when holiday get-togethers may not be possible every year. Your children will value your graciousness when it comes to how and when they celebrate the holidays. Whether in person or long distance, you can find a way to stay connected with your grandkids and influence them as only a grandparent can.

Tips for No-Stress Grandparenting During the Holidays

Be flexible.

Family schedules will not always fall in line with your ideal plans. This is increasingly true as more in-laws and additional sets of grandparents are involved. By asking yourself, How can I be a blessing to my grandchildren? instead of, How can I see them as much as I want? you’ll be following Paul’s admonition to put others’ interests before your own.

You are modeling a loving and gracious lifestyle. And in return, you will have grateful adult children, appreciative co-grandparents and grandkids who can’t wait to see you when the next opportunity arrives.

Adjust Expectations

Keep your expectations in check, especially during the Christmas season. Use the empathy you’ve learned over the years to model grace and joy to your grandkids. Don’t expect holiday schedules to always go your way. In fact, expect that they won’t. Think about how you can support your adult children in developing a healthy nuclear family by honoring their schedules. If you’re not with your grandkids for the holidays, find the right way to be involved — such as phone calls, texts, video chats, cards or visits before or after the actual occasion — so they feel your love and support without any scheduling pressure. However, keep in mind that if they are with the other grandparents, you should honor their special time together and check with your adult children about a good time for connecting with the grandkids.

Think Outside the Grandparenting Box During the Holidays

My sons and their wives currently live in Indiana and Colorado. Knowing there was no way for us all to be together at Christmas last year, we decided to get together at Thanksgiving and have an early Christmas — two holidays in one! Perhaps you will get creative and have an occasional “second Christmas” in January with the grandkids. When the grandkids are with you during the holidays, a nice touch is to have them send a picture of themselves to the other grandparents to show them that you’re all one big, happy family, even when you’re not all celebrating together.

Focus on the Time you Get

As much as you want your grandchildren near during the holidays, the reality is that they have a number of different obligations — and their parents are trying to do what’s best with the limited amount of time they have. That means that some years you’ll get less time. This is where you’ll need to be flexible and understanding. You may want the kids and grandkids for more than just a quick visit. Sometimes that might happen. Sometimes it won’t.

Instead of becoming frustrated over the time you don’t get with them, make the most of the time you do get to spend with the grandkids to embrace no-stress grandparenting. Every year, Mike and Susanne looked forward to spending Christmas Day with their grandkids. When the other set of grandparents moved out of state, however, their daughter-in-law wanted to spend Christmas Day with her family, which meant Mike and Susanne wouldn’t see the grandkids on the actual day. They talked with their son and daughter-in-law about what would work best for everyone and decided to move their Christmas celebration to the week between Christmas and New Year’s. “We reminded ourselves that it isn’t about the date but about the time with our grandkids,” Susanne said. “When we saw them, we acted as if it were Dec. 25. And everyone was happy.”

Remember your Kids are Building Their Own Traditions

Your adult children want the same thing you did when you were in their shoes. Just as you wanted to build family traditions with your children, they desire the same respect to create and carry out their own family traditions in their own unique way. Your adult children likely have many fond memories of certain holiday traditions when they were kids; now it’s their chance to draft their own traditions as the heads of their family. They are melding the traditions and ideas of two sets of families together, and they may even come up with some brand-new ideas of their own.

They may want to celebrate Christmas morning with their nuclear family. Give them that freedom — and know it doesn’t mean you’re less important to them. It’s one way you can grandparent well during the holidays — by giving them the time they need. This possible change also offers you opportunities to get creative in establishing your own new traditions with the grandkids. For instance, if they live close by, you could take them ice-skating during their winter break or have a Christmas movie marathon. If they live far away, perhaps you could send them a box of movies and set a time for you to watch them “together” and then Skype to talk about your favorite scenes.

Pass on Your Spiritual Legacy to Your Grandkids

As grandparents, we are perfectly poised to make a difference in our grandchildren’s lives. It’s what we’re called to do. Deuteronomy 4:9 instructs God’s people to teach their children and their grandchildren about God. We are to teach two generations, not just one. So make a spiritual impact this holiday season. Here are some Christmas activities to help you do that:

Before You Gather

Ask family members for their favorite Christmas carol, and make a playlist of family favorites for background music during the day. At an appropriate time, ask each one to share why he or she likes that carol and how it reminds him or her of Jesus’ birth.
Write one verse of the Christmas story on each gift tag for your grandchildren. Ask them to put the Scriptures in order and read them before they open their presents.
On decorative paper, write out John 1:14 , Galatians 4:4-5 , Philippians 2:6-8 and other passages that point out the theological implications of Jesus’ birth. Roll them as scrolls and hang them on the Christmas tree. As you tell the Christmas story, ask your grandkids to find all the scrolls on the tree and then give them to you or their parents to read.
Prepare a few items that represent God’s gifts to the world. In gift bags, put a statement or symbol of how the birth of Jesus impacted human history. For example, on a gift tag, write “To: all women, From: Jesus.” Inside put a card with Galatians 3:28 and the word equality on it, with your own statement about how Jesus impacted the status of women. On another, write “To: the sick, From: Jesus.” On the card inside write “medical care” and a statement about how Matthew 25:37-40 was the motivation behind the world’s first civilian hospitals.

Grandparenting During the Holidays while the Family is Together

Ask your grandkids what Jesus means to them. Then share your own faith story, describing what you have seen God do in your life and in those around you.
Read Scripture passages that prophecy about the Messiah, such as 2 Samuel 7:12-16 , Isaiah 7:14 and 9:6 and Micah 5:2 . In advance, write and then giftwrap passages that show how Jesus fulfilled each prophecy ( Luke 1:31-33 , Matthew 1:18-25 , Matthew 4:13-16 and Luke 2:4-5 ). Allow your grandkids to unwrap the Bible passages and connect them with the prophecies.

Consider What Your Grandkids Want

Grandkids may be the most straightforward ingredient in this family concoction. They want a safe and loving family, which primarily refers to their immediate nuclear family. However, your grandkids also want a close relationship with you and to know they are special in your eyes. Grandparents are an extra set of adults they can feel safe with, have fun with, talk to about anything, look to as an extra source of wisdom and guidance, and count on as a comfortable home away from home. You are their extra layer of security. During the holidays, they want to engage and have fun with you, not feel the tension between their parents and grandparents.

Grandparents have a place like no other in their grandkids’ lives. Sometimes, though, it takes time for you to figure out your place during the holidays. When you do, your influence and involvement during those times will be a source of joy and godly wisdom that can guide the direction of their lives.

This measure will abolish the furnished holiday lettings ( FHL ) tax regime from April 2025, removing the tax advantages that landlords who offer short-term holiday lets have over those who provide standard residential properties.

The government is publishing draft legislation to abolish the FHL tax regime. The documents include:

a tax information and impact note (TIIN), which sets out what the policy seeks to achieve, and a summary of the expected impacts
draft legislation
an explanatory note which provides a more detailed guide to the legislation

My foster mother hated her first name. I found another way to honor her after she died.

My foster mom, Esther, and I were incredibly close.
She made me promise not to name my kids after her.
I found another way to honor her.

I was 10 months old when Esther came into my life. My grandparents needed help raising me and my brother after our parents, who both struggled with addiction and could no longer raise us.

"You looked at me, and I know you were mine," she often told me when she relayed our origin story as I got older. Before I came along, she wanted a boy because of the conventional wisdom that they were easier. She wanted a child who was already potty trained. She wanted the opposite of who I was, but she knew I needed her. Eventually, Esther always said that she came to understand how much she needed me, too.

She provided foster care to children who were like me and my brother while raising her three biological children in a housing project. Initially, she cared for us when our grandparents worked. Soon, Esther and her kids became family.

Esther and I became closer and closer

Our bond deepened over time and became like that of a mother and child. "I wish I came from your belly," I often said, knowing she was not my real mother but wishing she were. We did not need biology to connect us. We would come to share history and memories. The summer meant a two-week vacation to a lake in New Hampshire with her and her kids. Holidays were divided between Esther and my grandparents.

As I got older, we would talk about our dreams on our leisurely drives in her long, yellow car, which we fondly referred to as "the giraffe." Esther wanted to finally own a home , and I wanted a house of my own in the suburbs, as well as a career, marriage, and children.

"Honey," she said, "promise me you will never name one of your kids after me." She thought her name was old, biblical, and ugly. "Esther is no name for a little girl."

I wanted to honor her while also keeping my promise

In 2006, almost 10 years after Esther died of an aggressive brain cancer, I was pregnant with my first daughter. I sat with my husband and worked on a list we would update after scanning baby name books. I stayed true to my promise and left Esther off the list, though I did spend some time looking into the history of the name. Of Persian origin, Esther means "star." In the bible, Esther was the name of a Queen. The name was associated with strength and beauty. Who wouldn't want that for their daughter?

I also looked back into the most popular names from the year Esther was born, 1936. The name wasn't even popular then.

While I loved the meaning, I heard the voice of my foster mother in the back of my mind. My promise came back in vivid detail. Over time, it had become more than a promise; Esther brought it up more than once, turning it into something of a threat. Once, she'd said, "If you name your child after me, I'll come back and haunt you."

We decided on Cameran for our firstborn daughter. My husband also agreed to use Elizabeth as a middle name. Elizabeth had biblical origins and meant "God's promise." It was also Esther's middle name and the name she chose for her youngest daughter. It was the perfect way to honor the woman who became my best friend and mother, no matter our mismatched DNA.

It also became a way to keep Esther in our lives and make sure my children knew who she was. I did not want her to be a ghost to my children, as my biological mother had been to me. I had a family who provided memories and pictures of my biological mother because we were connected by blood. Since I was not related biologically to my foster mom, my kids would only have me to pass along stories and make her a real part of their lives.

My daughter Cameran may never fully understand the importance of her middle name or personally know how amazing and strong the woman who shared it was, but I do. It will serve her well as she heads into the real world. Now, at 17, she is headed off to college in the fall. My daughter reminds me of my foster mother — independent and fierce. I'm sure it's not just the middle name I passed down but the lessons Esther taught me. They are lessons I've passed along to my children and ones I hope they will pass along to their children.
