Games and sports may be of various kinds. Boys and girls may practice races, jumps, etc. They may play various games like football, basketball, cricket, hockey, volleyball, badminton, etc. These games and sports increase team spirit among the participants and make them disciplined.

Games and sports teach us fair, kind and polite behaviours. Qualities such as cooperation, discipline, team spirit and honest play are learnt through games and sports. Players learn to accept their victories and defeats gracefully. Personality of an individual is developed. Players not only learn to accept their wins and losses in games and sports, but also learn to accept the failures and successes of life gracefully.

Physical and mental growth becomes easy through games and sports. They keep the player fit, fresh, alert and smart. Pure and fresh air can be breathed in open parks, school grounds and playgrounds. Players become strong, active and energetic due to continuous practice, hardwork and exercise. They also come to know the importance of physical work in life. Tolerance levels of the players increases. The feeling of unity and equality is created among them. The spirit of partnership, teamwork and assistance is produced.

The importance of games and sports can never be reduced. Firstly, they provide exercise to our body and helps in building strong body and calm mind. They make us mentally focused. Secondly, we learn to deal with challenging situations. By displaying ourselves before thousands of audiences, we can overcome our nervousness. Thirdly, games and sports are helpful as they give us energy to learn our lessons well.

For these reasons, most of the countries value the importance of games and sports. They spend more money on improving the standard of games and sports among its players and sportspersons at national and international levels. However, we should work to spread the value of games and sports that encourages individual, social, national and international importance.

Games teach us team spirit. We must play as a team; playing as individuals spoils the chances of victory. Every player cooperates with the other in defeating the opposite side. If we develop this very team spirit in our daily life, perhaps most of the problems of the world will be solved.

While playing one has to obey the captain. On the field, a player is not supposed to dispute the decision of the captain. If players start disobeying him, there will be anarchy on the field. In life, if we obey parents at home, teachers in school and laws of the land, the world will be a better place to live in.

The possibility of defeat should not unnerve us. Sometimes we fear failure. Moreover, defeat should not disappoint us. Games teach us the right way to ace failure and be positive in our outlook.

Sports and games are means of mental and physical growth. During sports we come to learn many things. We learn how to maintain mental balance in the midst of hopes and despair. They make us learn how to tackle the difficult situation. Sports develop a sense of friendliness. They develop in us team spirit. They help in developing mental and physical toughness. They shape our body and make it strong and active. They give us energy and strength. They remove tiredness and lethargy. They improve blood circulation. This improves our physical well-being.

We are all familiar with the maxim, Health is wealth. According to the world health organization, Health is  state of complete physical, mental, social as well as spiritual well being of an individual and not merely the absence of disease. Academics serve the purpose of nourishing the mind. But a healthy mind resides in a healthy body. One can develop and maintain a healthy body by actively participating in games and sports.

Games keep our body alert, active, youthful and energetic. They instill in us a spirit of adventure. Games increase the circulation of blood, boost metabolism, burn calories and improve the respiration and digestive system. A healthy person can work hard cheerfully for a long period of time, and can face dangers boldly. Games also instilling the players the spirit so self reliance, self confidence, justice, and fair play. They enable them to cultivate other virtues like discipline, honesty, integrity, loyalty and patriotic,.

While playing games various exercises are performed automatically and one need not join a gymnasium for this purpose. Brisk walking, running, cycling, skipping, swimming and yoga are common activities to keep oneself fit. They also tone up the body of both the young and the old. Mild exercises are beneficial for patients recovering from heart attack and those who suffer from obesity, diabetes, blood pressure, etc. exercise invigorates the mind and the body and helps to keep one fit.

Games generate a feeling of sportsmanship and broaden one’s outlook. They are very essential for the students. In our schools, however, games and sports are not given much importance. some schools cannot afford funds for sports equipment while most schools do not have a playground. Even parents want their children to complete their home assignments after school hours rather than play games. They fail to realize that games make children strong both mentally and physically. Many school children become obese due to lack of participating in games. Obesity puts them in the high risk category of contracting diseases like diabetes, heart aliments, etc. the educational system needs to be reformed, and equal             importance needs to be given to sports and games.

Lack of concern of the general public and authorities for sports and games is evident from our country’s poor performance in international sports events. In Beijing Olympics, India’s best ever performance of winning one gold and two bronze medals. We are far behind other countries in a number of games. Moreover, in the absence of funds and facilities, the players are unable to use their talent and energy in a productive manner. For example, hockey is mostly played on grass courts in India. There is also a lack of training of international standard. The players lack motivation. They are unawre of the diet they should follow to keep themselves fit. Cricket is the only game which is given importance.

No doubts sports have plenty of advantage but they also have some drawbacks. Some sportsmen lose their limbs, fracture their legs or get permanently disable while playing games. Many students take too much interest in games and ignore their studies.

The government has formulated a National Sports Policy,2001.it promotes a liking for sports among public at large. It aims at the development infrastructure and the provision of better coaching facilities.

Seventy percent of our population lives in villages. To popularize games and tap hidden talent in rural areas, the rural sports programme was launched in 1970-71. The scheme has been revised. Grants to sports have been increased. Sports scholarships are given to talented boys and girls.

Effective measures should be taken to ensure people active participation in games. The government should evolve a long term national sports policy children should be informed about the advantages of games. They should be made to play games regularly. Training facilities for various games should be introduced. The existing training facilities should be upgraded and example expanded. The selection of players for national and international games should be fair. The government has introduced a scheme related to talent search and training. Under this scheme, assistance is provided to promising sportsperson for training and training cum competitions is India and abroad, for  purchase of equipment and scientists, doctors, masseurs etc. are also assisted for undergoing specialized training and for attending seminar conferences and major international sports events and for appearing in qualifying examinations. Various awards like rajiv Gandhi khel ratna award, Arjuna Award, Dhyanchand Award, Dronacharya Award, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Trophy, Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Award etc. are given for the spectacular and outstanding performance of the sportsperson for higher achievements and to attract the younger generation to take sports as a career. The participation in sports and games will improve the overall health of the nation and its citizens.

The value of games is now being increasingly recognized in India from personal, social, educational and national points of view. Gaines and sports are essential for the all-round development of a personality. It is by playing games and sports that we can develop and maintain our health. Many of the modern diseases like hypertension, blood-pressure, diabetes, piles, obesity, and indigestion, etc. are the direct results of our current lifestyle, which excludes physical exercise or activity. It is only in a sound body that a sound mind resides. Absence of games has also resulted in many mental ailments and sleeplessness.

Games keep our body alert, active, youthful and energetic. In activities involving games and sports, blood-circulation increases and there is an increased supply of oxygen. Only a healthy person can work long, hard and cheerfully. An unhealthy person may not take as much interest in work as a healthy one. Health can be maintained by exercise alone. But games and sports have some additional benefits as they are played in groups and in healthy competitive spirit. Among many other things, they help develop co-operation, quality of leadership, team spirit and a willingness to submit to, and further, the rule of law. Games instill in the players the spirit of self-reliance, justice, fair play and sporting spirit. They make people bold, adventurous, social, disciplined and more conscious of their responsibilities towards society and nation. Players have been found better equipped to fight superstitions, communalism, obscurantism and narrow approach to issues of national interest.

The kind of excitement, joy, thrill and entertainment games provide is unparalleled. They make the exercise interesting and inspire confidence in one’s work. They also teach to take success and failure in one’s stride, in a sporting spirit. So, games and sports have all these additional advantages which an exercise taken for physical fitness and health lacks. A player is bound to become broad-minded, tolerant, principled, disciplined, honest, more secular in his approach and tough enough to tackle problems.

It is said that, “The battle of Waterloo was won on the playing fields of Eton,” because the hero of this battle was a student of this famous school. It is here, as a student and player, that he developed the great qualities of leadership, patriotism, heroism, endurance, courage, and team-spirit, etc. which later helped him in defeating Napoleon. These and other qualities of character cultivated with the help of games and Sports are quite essential for success in life. They provide the much needed self-confidence and sense of fair play to the players and sports persons. They widen the mental horizon of players and make them true followers of the rule of law. A player has to follow certain rules and regulations while playing. He is penalized for a foul or transgression of the rule. He or she has to abide by the decision of the referee. He has to play in a certain place and position, under the captain or skipper of the team. One has to respect and obey their captain. Success in a game depends on co-operative team spirit and combined energetic efforts of all the members of the team. A team has to play as an organized whole in a competitive spirit, against the other team. And this goes a long way in inculcating in the players, both consciously, and unconsciously, the spirit of adventure, discipline, fair play, team spirit, co-operation and taking of quick and right decisions. A sports person may not lose his or her temper and morale even in the face of defeat because he/she would take it coolly, calmly and then would try to perform better the next time. Players know that victory and defeat are the two aspects of the same coin. There is more joy in playing than in its end result. As in games so in life, a good player will never give up or admit defeat, nor would he be demoralized by defeat. In joy and success also he will keep his cool and equipoise. The defeated players and their team congratulate the winning team, shake hands with the winning players, which teaches them to face realities of life with a smiling face in the spirit of detachment and indifference of an onlooker. Games also help in overcoming the sense of violence, arrogance and superiority as these are purged by providing them sufficient outlet.

There cannot be a better training place than a playground for our young men and women preparing to enter the fray and combat of life. It is not success or failure or the length of life that is significant. What is of utmost importance is the quality of life and the spirit in which it has been spent. In the words of poet Grantland Rice :

Encouragement of sports and games is also desirable as it helps in decreasing the general incidence of crimes. Games and sports develop character and give health, which are quit essential for improving the quality of one’s life, acquiring wealth and success. It is because of these reasons that our government and educational institutions have become so sports-conscious and greater funds are being allocated for the promotion of sports. Sports in India is a state subject, but the Centre helps the states by rendering financial assistance and laying down guidelines for sports activities. Many states have now introduced games and sports as compulsory subjects in schools and some of them have started sports schools and sports hostels, etc. The corporate and ‘private sector should also come forward to help promote games and sports. A beginning has been made, in the sense that many national sports events are now being sponsored by some well-known business houses, firms, companies and establishments. The business and corporate bodies should spend a percentage of their income not only in sponsoring national sports events, but also in providing playing grounds, equipment and other facilities necessary for the promotion of games and sports.

Softball is more than just a game for Jailyn Latour. It’s her escape -- an outlet from everything to get away from the stressors in her everyday life. It’s not just a sport, it gives her courage. Similarly, baseball gives Zion Oliver and Ryan Shepard valor to find mentors, cope with loss and become the best versions of themselves.

They found bravery in their respective sports and used it to share their stories through the Breaking Barriers essay contest. Their writing stood out among hundreds of entries, and they were chosen as winners at the Nike RBI World Series earlier this August.

“For all three of them, there was a tie in there that they wanted to be courageous and strong,” said David James, MLB’s vice president of baseball and softball development. “For a friend moving forward, or the experience that they had, is going to give them the courage to do the right thing moving forward.”

The Breaking Barriers essay contest was established in 1997 by Sharon Robinson, Jackie Robinson's daughter. Players must write an essay about how they have overcome adversity and focus on one of Robinson’s core principles that helped them: Courage, determination, teamwork, persistence, integrity, commitment and excellence.

The three winners -- one softball player and one baseball player from the junior and senior divisions -- were honored at the Nike RBI World Series at the Jackie Robinson Training Complex in Vero Beach, Fla.

“It's been a cornerstone of the RBI program ,” James said. “It gives our participants an opportunity to tell us what's going on in their life, both good and bad, but it's also a forum for them to understand that we're all similar, and we all face challenges.

“Sharon Robinson, Jackie's daughter, started the program, and it's an opportunity for these kids to sort of get it out and talk to their colleagues and the folks from Major League Baseball, so that they have a safe space -- simply put -- to sometimes get things off of their chest.”

Each player has their unique challenges but they share Jackie Robinson’s legacy of courage. Latour, Oliver and Shepard used that bravery to be vulnerable and participate in the contest.

In his essay, Shepard shared his story of loss and how it transformed him. The junior division winner decided to honor his friend -- who died in a car accident -- by using baseball to become the best version of himself.

“He called out in the essay that he’s living for his hero,” James said. “But he also acknowledged that everybody deals with hardships and obstacles in their path, but what matters is what you do moving forward. So he embraced the whole idea of this essay of using Jackie's values to assist them to get through the hard times.”

Oliver, the winner in the senior division, shared his experience growing up without a dad. He wrote about how baseball has helped him meet new friends and adults -- who have become his mentors and father figures.

“Integrity for him was a big thing too, in regards to the type of person that he was going to be and hopefully later on in life,” James said. “As he has kids of his own, he wants to have that sort of relationship that maybe he wished for when he was a kid.”

Latour’s essay stood out for its honesty and openness, according to James. She shared how softball has been her conduit for success in achieving her goals -- becoming a second-generation college athlete and starting her journey to be a doctor -- and a safe place to make mistakes with the support of her teammates and coaches.

“Being a part of the program has helped her become a better person,” said Meghan Hayes, manager of the Astros Youth Academy and Astros Foundation. “It's helped her gain friends and teammates that I feel have shaped her to be the person she is. The perseverance that she's shown, like just from coming off an injury last year, almost making that team, to stepping it up and starting for our team this year, really shows how much she has grown.”

Their stories were shared during the RBI World Series with all participants and coaches. Not only were their voices heard, but it also showed others -- whether they participated in the contest or not -- the RBI community supports them through the challenges they face.

“I think that hearing the stories of others sort of strengthens them,” James said. “So it is bigger than baseball and softball. It's about Major League citizens, and these kids, these coaches, have bought into it and I think it just benefits the program. It is bigger than just what we do on the field.”

PARIS – Full-time teacher by morning, Paralympic athlete by afternoon and a father always, Team USA archer Eric Bennett is embarking on his fifth Paralympic Games with his sights set on a prize bigger than the gold medal: his family in attendance to watch him shoot.

Bennett, a Surprise native and graduate of Northern Arizona University, began practicing archery when he was 7 and quickly found a passion for the sport until he lost his right arm at 15, when a drunk driver hit the car in which he was a passenger. It wasn’t until about 10 years later that he started shooting again, this time with help from his father.

“When I realized that I could shoot again, that’s when a fire was lit, and I had gotten my love back,” said Bennett, who is set to compete in the recurve Para Archery event beginning Thursday in Paris.

Alongside another Team USA archer and Arizona native, Brady Ellison, who also competed in his fifth Olympic Games this summer, Bennett will be setting a record for the male Team USA archers for the number of Games competed in.

After over 15 years in the international competitive archery world and, at 50, the oldest member of the United States archery team, Bennett has found that the biggest change in his preparation comes from his mentality. Although he is a two-time World Para Archery Champion and a four-time U.S. national champion, Bennett is still searching for his first Olympic medal.

“This particular Games, I really am excited for because I feel more positive and confident than I have in a long time, and I am also just content inside myself knowing that I’m going to do my best,” he said.

Bennett competed in his first Paralympics in the Beijing 2008 Games and has competed in every Paralympics since. His family, however, has been unable to travel with him. His wife, Rachel Bennett, hasn’t attended the Paralympics since 2012 in London, and his children, Logan, 18, and Natalie Bennett, 15, have never been able to travel internationally with Bennett to watch him compete.

The Paris Games are set to change that.

“This has been huge for me,” Bennett said. “I will be really honest, a big part of my motivation and drive to make my fifth Games was to have my family there.”

Despite the level of commitment it takes to compete at such an elite level with practice and travel, along with working full time as a high school physics and engineering teacher, Bennett has always made his family a priority.

“He always just put his family first,” Rachel said. “We’re excited to just continue to support him and be there for him in this avenue as well.”

Due to visitation rules for the Olympic Village and the Team USA House, Bennett’s communication with his family will mainly be limited to calling and texting while in Paris for the Games.

Each Team USA competing athlete will receive four one-day credentials to give out to friends and family, according to the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. These credentials will allow the visitor access to the Team USA House including the VIP second floor. For the first time, the general public will also be allowed to purchase tickets to visit the public first floor space.

The Bennett family is no stranger to making the most of showing support from afar and finding camaraderie within the Paralympic archery community.

After COVID-19 restrictions prevented Rachel and her children from attending the Games in Tokyo 2020, they traveled to Colorado Springs, home of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic training center, to cheer for Bennett with the families of other athletes.

“It was honestly one of the coolest experiences I ever had. We got absolutely spoiled there …” Natalie Bennett said. “Not to mention I got to see my dad on live TV. I mean almost every kid dreams of that.”

Now Bennett’s family will be able to achieve the dream of watching him compete in the Paralympics in person for what might be the last time.

According to Bennett, he plans to step away from the high level commitment to the United States Archery Team and reconnect with how he started archery on the compound bow.

“I’m gonna do archery as a hobby and have fun with it again,” Bennett said.

Bennett, however, said he is not retiring his recurve bow entirely, and he hopes to give it one last try closer to the trials for the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.

LAKE MARY, Fla. – The Lake Mary All-Stars arrived back in Central Florida on Monday after winning the Little League World Series championship game a day earlier.

The team rallied to beat Taiwan 2-1 in eight innings and claim the title.

“It was the greatest feeling ever,” said Lake Mary’s Lathan Norton, who scored the winning run. “I still haven’t had time to let it all sink in, but it feels like the most amazing thing ever.”

Lake Mary is planning to host a parade this Saturday , calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime celebration.”

Bryan Nipe, the director of Economic Development, Parks & Recreation, said they’ve been working on this celebration for months.

“We already had our girls softball win states, and we already had some big energy there, and the boys kept going. We knew something big was happening,” Nipe said.

The city says the parade to honor the team, their coaches and families will start at 10 a.m. It will include a procession of vehicles, mascots and a marching band.

“This is the most inspirational story,” said Lake Mary Mayor David Mealor. “If you stop and think about it, last year, this team missed going to the world series by one game, but they didn’t look at it as a failure. They looked at it as an opportunity to improve to be better. Today they are not only national champions, they’re world series champions.”

This is the first championship in nine tries for Florida, which also came from behind in its 10-7 semifinal win over Texas on Saturday, scoring five runs in its final at-bat.

“We came here to do something. We came here to do a job, and today we accomplished that job,” Florida manager Jonathan Anderson said. “We took a loss to Texas, we battled all the way back and here we are to talk about how we won this whole thing.”

UCLA men's basketball will face New Mexico for their second game of the 2024-25 season, the team announced in a press release Monday . The game will take place on Friday, Nov. 8 at the Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada. The stadium is outside of Las Vegas, NV.

"We're excited to add New Mexico to our schedule this season," Bruins head coach Mick Cronin said. "This game provides us with another good measuring stick, early in the season, to see what our team is made of and how we stack up against a program that went 26-10 last year. I have a ton of respect for Richard Pitino, and he has put UNM's program in a really strong position in the Mountain West. This game also gives our fans in the Las Vegas region a chance to come cheer on the Bruins in November."

The Bruins face New Mexico in one of their early season non-conference games before they begin play against their new Big Ten foes. UCLA has not played New Mexico since 1997, when the Bruins earned a win.

UCLA has also announced several other non-conference matchups ahead of the season. The Bruins will face former Pac-12 rival Arizona in Phoenix on Dec. 14 as part of a multi-year series between the two programs.

The week after their game against Arizona, the Bruins will face North Carolina at Madison Square Garden in New York City as part of the 2024 CBS Sports Classic . The Bruins are one of four teams to be featured annually in that holiday matchup, along with North Carolina, Ohio State, and Kentucky.

Lastly, the Bruins have already announced a non-conference game against Gonzaga the following week on Dec. 28. The game will take place at the recently-built Intuit Dome, the home of the Los Angeles Clippers.

UCLA comes into the season after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign in which they went 16-17 and failed to qualify for the NCAA Tournament. Cronin rebuilt the team's roster over the offseason through the transfer portal, adding in players like Dominick Harris, William Kyle III, Tyler Bilodeau, Skyy Clark, Eric Dailey Jr., and Kobe Johnson.

The Bruins will face a New Mexico team that went 26-10 overall a season ago and are coming off their first NCAA Tournament appearance in a decade.
