‘RRR’ Review: Telugu Cinema Superstars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan Shine in a Splendidly Exciting Epic

Roaring tigers, flaming arrows and revolutionary fervor are on display in director S.S. Rajamouli's audacious action-adventure.

Straight out of Tollywood: “ RRR ,” a bigger-than-life and bolder-than-mainstream action-adventure epic, is performing mightily in international release as audiences marvel at its spectacle, embrace its emotions, and sway to its music while being repeatedly gobsmacked by its unfettered audacity. Propelled by the Telugu Cinema triumvirate of superstars N.T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan and director S.S. Rajamouli — whose combined names are one reason for the triple-consonant title — the movie is such an irresistible and intoxicating celebration of cinematic excess that even after 187 minutes (including intermission or, as the title card announces, “InteRRRval”), you are left exhilarated, not exhausted. Which, truth to tell, is hard to say about certain comic-book movies from two major extended universes.

Mind you, the two protagonists here aren’t supposed to be superheroes. In fact, they are flesh-and-blood humans out of Indian history: Komaram Bheem, a revolutionary leader and guerrilla fighter from the Gond tribe during the British Raj; and Alluri Sitarama Raju, a similarly inclined insurgent who often led his under-equipped followers during raids on police stations to acquire firearms. There is no record of these two men ever meeting in real life. But hey, when have filmmakers ever allowed facts to get in the way of an exciting story? There also isn’t any record of their possessing any abilities more superhuman than cunning and charisma. But Rajamouli doesn’t let that bother him, either.

In the 1920s world according to “RRR” — which also stands for “Rise, Roar, Revolt,” when the full title finally makes its first appearance on screen — Raju, referenced here as Ram, is a fiercely determined firebrand from Andhra Pradesh who goes undercover as a member of the British army in the hope of arming his compatriots. Early on, he demonstrates his faux loyalty to the Crown — and more or less establishes his superhumanity — by singlehandedly punching, kicking, beating and otherwise manhandling what appear to be thousands of protesters to seize a guy who tossed a rock at a portrait in a police outpost. In most action movies, this sequence would satisfy as a rousingly over-the-top climax. In “RRR,” however, it’s nothing more than a curtain-raiser.

In the Adilabad forest, the working-class-heroic Bheem establishes his own preternatural bona fides while outrunning a wolf in order to lead the beast into a trap. Unfortunately, the wolf is taken out of the equation by a tiger, who proceeds to chase Bheem. Fortunately, Bheem is more than a match for the big cat, even when the trap doesn’t quite work. The tiger roars. Bheem roars back. And if you are fortunate enough to see “RRR” in a theater, as it is meant to be, the next roar you hear will be that of a cheering audience.

The fuse is lit for an explosive meeting of these exceptional men when the British governor Scott Buxton (Ray Stevenson) and his crueler-than-Cruella wife Catherine (Alison Doody) go slumming in a Gond village — accompanied, of course, by a contingent of heavily armed soldiers. Catherine is enchanted by a little girl named Malli (Twinkle Sharma), and claims the child as an amusing plaything to entertain guests in their palatial Delhi home. This doesn’t go over well with the child’s mother — or anyone else in the village, for that matter — but Buxton has enough muscle power to enforce his wife’s whim of iron. He doesn’t have anyone shot only because he doesn’t want to waste expensive bullets on “brown rubbish.”

At this point, you may be tempted to shout rude things at the screen. But don’t fear: Bheem vows to journey to Delhi and, with the aid of simpatico locals, retrieve Malli. It doesn’t take long for word of Bheem’s impending arrival to reach British authorities — and it takes even less time for Ram to volunteer to find and arrest the potential troublemaker. But fate (along with the shamelessly contrived scenario by Rajamouli and co-writers Sai Madhav Burra and K.V. Vijayendra Prasad) tosses both men a curve when each sees a boy trapped in a Delhi river while flaming railroad cars drop into the water around him. Both men rush to a conveniently located bridge — Ram on horseback, Bheem on a motorcycle — and improvise a rescue detailed in another jaw-dropping action set piece.

And all of this happens in the film’s first 40 minutes.

It would be unfair to spill more beans and spoil any fun by providing additional plot details or scene descriptions. (Just wait until you see what Bheem does with a truckload of nonhuman disruptors.) Suffice it to say that Bheem and Ram develop a deep friendship without either knowing the other’s true identity or grand designs, and they greatly enjoy each other’s company until they don’t, and then they do again. There are two splendiferously spirited song-and-dance sequence where the guys delight in their bromance, and they play like fever dreams of Stanley Donen directing an action-movie remake of “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Widely known as Jr NTR, N.T. Rama Rao Jr. is effective and empathy-grabbing as a seemingly ordinary man who achieves the extraordinary while evolving into an iconic hero. (He also gets a few laughs, especially during Bheem’s shy yet stealthy romance of a British beauty sweetly played by Olivia Morris.) Better yet, he has sensational chemistry with the more conventionally dashing Ram Charan. It may be overstating the case to suggest Charan carries himself with the authority and assurance of a deity — that is, when he’s not physically or emotionally anguished — but when Ram “borrows” the bow and arrow from a statue of Lord Rama, it seems less an act of sacrilege than an example of professional courtesy.

Echoes of John Woo abound in “RRR” as themes of loyalty, betrayal, and mutable identity are recurrently sounded, providing a powerful anchor of seriousness and mortal stakes during the most fantastical fights, flights and feats of derring-do. Occasionally your mind may tell you, “This is absurd!” Each time that happens, though, your heart will reply, “So what? Give me more!”

‘Yatra 2’ movie review: The emotional drama works better than the politics

Mammootty and jiiva liven up the father-son dynamics in the telugu political drama ‘yatra 2’, which eventually gets skewed and tiresome.

A monsoon night. The then chief minister of undivided Andhra Pradesh, the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy ( Mammootty ), stirs out of bed earlier than usual and walks to the foyer to find his son YS Jagan Mohan Reddy ( Jiiva ) also unable to sleep. They are unable to express their feeling of unease in words. At YSR’s request, Jagan hands him a glass of water, and, as he begins to walk away, he turns to look at him, unaware that this would be the last time. YSR takes a sip of the water. The thunder sounds louder and he grimaces for a fleeting second. In director Mahi V Raghav’s Telugu film Yatra 2 , this scene is a crucial one.

The scene envelops within it the brief interaction between the father and the son against the ominous weather conditions and makes us wonder what if YSR had lent an ear to his wife Vijayalakshmi or Vijayamma’s (Ashrita Vemuganti) apprehensions and deferred his chopper ride? The sequel to the 2019 YSR biopic, Yatra , narrates the events leading up to the rise of YS Jagan. Its eulogising tone and the timing of the film’s release, months before the elections, makes its intentions clear. While YSR and Jagan are depicted as leaders who do not err, the opponents are all wily and crooked. Within that framework, it also tries to be a compelling story of a father and a son. It finds that groove in a few scenes such as this interaction on the rainy night, before it becomes an increasingly one-sided political drama.

Mahi Raghav takes the help of cinematographer Madhie and music composer Santhosh Narayanan to create effective drama. Sathyan Sooryan and composer K did the honours for Yatra . The colour palette remains muted, often moving to warmer tones when the film juxtaposes the cinematic recreation of real-life situations and characters with actual footage of YSR, Jagan and the sea of people who mourned the demise of the late leader. Santhosh’s background score works without drawing attention to itself in the initial portions. Some of the dialogues are also measured yet effective. Watch out for an early scene showing YSR eager to help a young girl with a hearing impediment. It helps that the lines are uttered by Mammootty, whose regal demeanour and composure convey it all. His performance is a little more than an extended cameo and serves as the foundation of this film.

The subtle tonal inspirations from films such as The Godfather and Thevar Magan are also evident in a few early scenes. Jagan hesitates to hog the limelight when his father is cheered on by the swelling crowds. Outside home, he sees his father as a tall leader and is content staying a foot behind him. Contrast this with a later scene when Jagan stands tall in an open-roof car, having earned his victory. His body language conveys that he has earned his place in the sun. Jiiva plays the part with conviction and brings in ample credibility.

When the battle lines are drawn between Jagan and the ‘party high command’ and with Chandrababu Naidu (Mahesh Manjrekar), the film gets increasingly monotonous in how it paints Jagan’s opponents as slimy and conniving. A few aspects are also borderline silly. The ruling party at the Centre is referred to here as the Progress party and the irony is unmistakable when ‘progress’ and ‘Madam (Suzanne Bernert as Sonia Gandhi) makes the final decisions’ are uttered within quick succession. The State-level opposition becomes the Telugu Nadu Party and the slightly wicked background score with which Naidu is introduced adds unintentional humour.

Yatra 2 makes ‘the party high command’ and its senior leaders seem more of a caricature than actual political opponents. There’s also a passing scene where we see former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh waiting to meet ‘Madam’ who refuses to cut short her coffee break! At least Naidu’s characterisations, in the later portions, get a slightly better deal showing some political moves.

While the ‘odarpu yatra’ and the rise of the son to a leader are narrated with some conviction, the last half hour between Jagan and Naidu gets increasingly lopsided, long-drawn and dull. Jiiva’s performance and that of Ashrita Vemuganti (as YS Vijayalakshmi) and Ketaki Narayan (as YS Bharati), keep us somewhat engaged in the final portions. The two women have an uncanny resemblance to the real-life characters they are portraying.

Mahi Raghav also finds the scope to include dialogues such as ‘Devudu nammakam, YSR nijam (God is a belief, YSR is truth)’, which works like a mass moment that draws whistles in the hall. In another scene, the reference to strong-willed Kadapa son of the soil also elicits cheers.

However, these moments aren’t enough to prop up a narrative that gets tiresome despite all the yatras. The film depicts events that led to Jagan launching his own political party, breaking away from the Progress (Congress) party and shows how he lost the 2014 elections to Naidu. However, it refrains from discussing the bifurcation of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh and the formation of Telangana in 2014 in detail. The character of Y S Sharmila is also conspicuous by her absence. The film stays focussed on portraying the rise of the son as a leader who wins the elections in 2019 to become the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh.

चित्रपटाचे कथानक हे ३० ते ४० वर्षांचा इतिहास असलेल्या स्त्री भ्रूण हत्या या ज्वलंत सामाजिक प्रश्नाचा अजूनही चालू असलेल्या प्रवासाबद्दल आहे. भारतातील अनेक राज्यांमध्ये लिंग प्रमाणाची असमानता हा गंभीर सामाजिक प्रश्न आहे. वेगवेगळा दृष्टीकोण आणि कारणं असणारी परंतु एकाच कृतीमध्ये परिणत होणारी कथानकं या चित्रपटात चित्रित केली आहेत. सुरवातीलाच चित्रपटाची लांबी कंटाळवाणी आहे असा व्यक्त होणारा प्रेक्षक अतिशय भारावूनच प्रेक्षागृहाबाहेर पडतो तेंव्हा आपल्या पहिल्या प्रतिक्रियेला संपूर्ण विसरून जातो. कथानकातील कोणताही प्रसंग न लांबता ते पुढे सरकते. एडिटिंगचा थोडासा दुर्मिळ पण प्रभावी प्रकार या चित्रपटात पाहायला मिळतो जो प्रेक्षकाला आधीच्या प्रसंगाची आठवण देत खिळवून ठेवतो. सामाजिक भान जागृत करणारा हा वास्तववादी चित्रपट प्रेक्षकांच्या डोळ्यात झणझणीत अंजन घालून दिग्दर्शकाचा हेतू साध्य करतो. सर्व सहभागी कलाकारांचे पात्राच्या गरजेनुसार परंतु संयमित व्यक्त होणे भावले. एक मात्र खरें की बऱ्याच दिवसांनंतर चांगल्या विषयावरील उत्कृष्ट चित्रपट पाहिल्याचे समाधान हा चित्रपट प्रत्येक प्रेक्षकाला देऊन जातो.

Though a very tense and terse movie, it makes you see. Cinematography of a different genre. Keeps you engaged throughout. One does not feel like a movie, rather it is like being in the middle of those happenings. Scares you awefully although no violence is shown directly but it's suggestions are enough to scare you. Yes that particular sentence by the doctor in one scene, is what the mentality of our society is. There was no need though for the bus driver character to be named as "Bashir" - it could have been Balwant, Basappa as well. Why that sub-texting? No need.

Buddy Movie Story || క‌థేంటంటే: ఆదిత్య (అల్లు శిరీష్‌) పైలెట్‌. విధి నిర్వ‌హ‌ణ‌లో భాగంగా ఎయిర్ ట్రాఫిక్ కంట్రోల్ రూమ్‌తో త‌ర‌చూ మాట్లాడుతుంటాడు. ఈ క్రమంలోనే అక్క‌డ ప‌ని చేసే ప‌ల్ల‌వి (గాయ‌త్రీ భ‌ర‌ద్వాజ్‌)తో మాట‌లు క‌లుస్తాయి. వాళ్లిద్ద‌రూ ఒక‌రినొక‌రు చూసుకోకున్నా.. ఆ మాట‌ల ప‌రిచ‌యం ప్రేమ‌గా మారుతుంది. స‌రైన సంద‌ర్భం చూసి ఆదిత్యకు త‌న‌ని ప‌రిచయం చేసుకుని మ‌న‌సులో మాట చెప్పాల‌నుకుంటుంది ప‌ల్ల‌వి. కానీ, ఓ రోజు ఆమె చేసిన చిన్న పొర‌పాటు వ‌ల్ల ఆదిత్యను ఉద్యోగం నుంచి స‌స్పెండ్ చేస్తారు. ఆదిత్యను నేరుగా కలిసి క్షమాపణ చెప్పాలనుకున్న పల్లవి కిడ్నాప్‌ అవుతుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో జరిగిన గొడవ కారణంగా పల్లవి కోమాలోకి వెళ్ల‌గా.. ఆమె ఆత్మ ఓ టెడ్డీబేర్‌లోకి చేరుతుంది. ప్రాణం ఉండ‌గానే ప‌ల్ల‌వి ఆత్మ బ‌య‌ట‌కెలా వ‌చ్చింది? ఆమెను కిడ్నాప్ చేసిన ముఠాకి.. హాంకాంగ్‌లో ఉన్న డాక్ట‌ర్ అర్జున్ కుమార్ వ‌ర్మ (అజ్మ‌ల్‌)కూ ఉన్న సంబంధం ఏంటి? ప‌ల్ల‌విని ఆదిత్య ఎలా కాపాడాడు? అన్న‌ది క‌థ‌.

Buddy Movie Story || ఎలా సాగిందంటే: అవ‌య‌వాల అక్ర‌మ ర‌వాణా ముఠా నేప‌థ్యంలో సాగే చిత్ర‌మిది. ఈ ముఠా అరాచ‌కాల్ని ఒక టెడ్డీబేర్‌తో క‌లిసి హీరో ఎలా అడ్డుకున్నాడ‌న్న‌ది ఆస‌క్తిక‌రం. క‌థ‌గా చూడ‌టానికి ఈ పాయింట్ బాగున్నా.. దాన్ని ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా తెర‌పైకి తీసుకురావ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు త‌డ‌బ‌డ్డాడు. మాన‌వ‌ అవ‌య‌వాలు దొంగ‌లించే క్రూర‌మైన డాక్ట‌ర్ అర్జున్‌గా అజ్మ‌ల్‌ను ప‌రిచ‌యం చేస్తూ సినిమాని ఆరంభించిన తీరు థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గానే ఉంటుంది. ఆ వెంట‌నే ప‌ల్ల‌విగా గాయ‌త్రీ భ‌ర‌ద్వాజ్ పాత్ర‌ను తెర‌పైకి తీసుకొచ్చి.. చ‌క‌చ‌కా నేరుగా క‌థ‌లోకి తీసుకెళ్లే ప్రయ‌త్నం చేశారు. ఆమెను అర్జున్ ముఠా మ‌త్తిచ్చి కిడ్నాప్ చేయడం.. వాళ్ల నుంచి త‌ప్పించుకునే ప్ర‌య‌త్నంలో ఆమె కోమాలోకి వెళ్లిపోవ‌డం.. ఆ వెంట‌నే త‌న ఆత్మ టెడ్డీలోకి చేరిపోవడం 20 నిమిషాల్లోనే అస‌లు క‌థ‌లోకి తీసుకెళ్లిపోయాడు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. కానీ, ఆ త‌ర్వాత నుంచి క‌థంతా న‌త్త‌న‌డ‌క‌నే సాగుతుంది.

నిజానికి ఒక టెడ్డీకి ప్రాణ‌మొచ్చి మ‌నుషుల మ‌ధ్య తిరిగేస్తుంటే చూసే వాళ్ల‌కు ఎవ‌రికైనా ఎంతోకొంత థ్రిల్లింగ్‌గా.. ఆశ్చ‌ర్యంగా అనిపించ‌క మాన‌దు. కానీ, సినిమాలో ఆ టెడ్డీని చూసిన ఎవ‌రిలోనూ ఆ ఆశ్చ‌ర్యం క‌నిపించ‌దు. పైగా అది చెప్పిన‌ క‌థకు క‌రిగిపోయి హీరో దానికి సాయం చేయాల‌ని ఎందుకు అనుకుంటాడ‌న్న‌ది అస‌లు అర్థం కాదు. ప‌ల్ల‌వి శరీరాన్ని వెతుక్కుంటూ హీరో ప్ర‌యాణం ప్రారంభించిన‌ప్ప‌టి నుంచే క‌థ కాస్త ఆస‌క్తిక‌రంగా మారుతుంది. ఈ క్ర‌మంలో వ‌చ్చే ఆస్ప‌త్రి ఫైట్ ఎపిసోడ్‌.. వైజాగ్ పోర్టులో జ‌రిగే యాక్ష‌న్ సీక్వెన్స్ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటాయి. ద్వితీయార్ధంలో క‌థ పూర్తిగా హాంగ్‌కాంగ్‌కు షిఫ్ట్ అవుతుంది. టెడ్డీని.. దాని బాడీని వెతికి ప‌ట్టుకునేందుకు హీరో చేసే ప్ర‌య‌త్నాలు ఏమాత్రం ఆస‌క్తిరేకెత్తించ‌వు. క్లైమాక్స్‌ ఫైట్‌ సీన్‌ మరీ సాగదీత వ్యవహారం.

ఎవ‌రెలా చేశారంటే: ఆదిత్య పాత్ర‌లో శిరీష్ అలా నటించుకుంటూ వెళ్లిపోయాడు. స‌వాల్ విసిరే అంశాలు ఆ పాత్ర‌లో పెద్ద‌గా ఏమీ లేవు. ప‌ల్ల‌విగా గాయ‌త్రీ భ‌ర‌ద్వాజ్ అందంగా క‌నిపించింది. కానీ, న‌ట‌న ప‌రంగా ఆమె పాత్ర‌కూ క‌థ‌లో అంత ప్రాధాన్య‌త లేదు. ప్రిషా సింగ్‌, అలీ, ముఖేష్ రిషిల పాత్ర‌లు ప‌రిధి మేర‌కు ఉంటాయి.  ప్ర‌తినాయ‌కుడిగా అజ్మ‌ల్ పాత్ర ఆరంభంలో శ‌క్తిమంతంగా క‌నిపించినా.. ఆ త‌ర్వాత ఆ పాత్ర కూడా పూర్తిగా తేలిపోయింది. ఇది త‌మిళంలో వ‌చ్చిన టెడ్డీకి రీమేక్‌. ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ఈ క‌థ‌ను తెలుగు ప్రేక్ష‌కుల అభిరుచుల‌కు త‌గ్గ‌ట్లుగా కాస్త మార్పులు చేశాడు కానీ, అది ఏమాత్రం మెప్పించ‌దు. హీరోయిన్ కోమాలో ఉండ‌గా.. ఆమె ఆత్మ బ‌య‌ట‌కు రావ‌డ‌మ‌న్న పాయింట్‌ను తెలుగు ప్రేక్ష‌కులు ‘ఎందుకంటే ప్రేమంట’ చిత్రంలో చూసేశారు. కాబ‌ట్టి ఆ అంశం కూడా ఆస‌క్తిరేకెత్తించ‌దు. క‌థ‌లో ప్ర‌ధాన పాత్ర‌లైన‌ టెడ్డీకి.. హీరోకి మ‌ధ్య బ‌ల‌మైన ఎమోష‌న్‌ను చూపించ‌లేక‌పోయారు. శిరీష్ మార్కెట్‌ను మించి ఖ‌ర్చు పెట్టిన‌ట్లు అర్థమవుతోంది.

The Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) Trailer Release Date: Vijay’s Movie Glimpses Set To Thrill Fans

Vijay's GOAT Update: Thalapathy Vijay's highly anticipated film, "The Greatest of All Time" (GOAT), is generating significant buzz. Initially set for a June release to coincide with Vijay's 50th birthday, the film was postponed due to extensive post-production and VFX work. Now scheduled for worldwide release on September 5th, the three singles released so far have not met expectations, leaving fans disheartened.

Vijay's last three films, "Beast," "Varisu," and "Leo," received mixed reviews and faced trolling, despite production companies claiming financial success. This has left Vijay's fans quite upset. During this period of disappointment, the announcement of Vijay's collaboration with Venkat Prabhu came as a sweet surprise. "GOAT," produced by AGS Entertainment, is crucial for both Vijay and Venkat Prabhu, especially after Venkat Prabhu's previous film "Custody" was a major flop. Venkat Prabhu is determined to make a strong comeback and deliver a quality film for Vijay.

Venkat Prabhu has employed de-ageing technology to portray Vijay as a younger character. The director previously shared on social media that some of the movie's visual effects were created by Lola VFX, a renowned studio based in Los Angeles. Despite Vijay already looking youthful, fans are excited to see him with de-ageing effects. Additionally, the film is said to be a science fiction action movie.

After several years, Yuvan Shankar Raja is composing music for a Vijay film, raising high expectations for the songs. However, the three songs released so far have not met those expectations, and fans mentioned they couldn't tolerate seeing the de-aged Vijay in the third single. Amidst this, a new update about the film has surfaced. Since the release of the third single, fans have expressed more scepticism than anticipation for the film. To address this dissatisfaction and anxiety, the team has reportedly made a decision. Venkat Prabhu is said to have created an excellent trailer for the film, which has been approved by Vijay, and they plan to release it on August 19th.

Additionally, according to some reports, the next glimpse of "The GOAT" will be released on August 15th, with a runtime of 0:49 minutes. The film's trailer is expected to be released on either August 20th or 22nd.

"GOAT" boasts a stellar cast led by Vijay, including notable actors such as Prashanth, Prabhu Deva, Ajmal Ameer, and Meenakshi Chaudhary as Srinidhi. The film also features seasoned industry veterans like Mohan, Jayaram, Sneha, Laila, and Vaibhav, along with a talented ensemble including Premji Amaran, Yugendran, Parvati Nair, VTV Ganesh, Yogi Babu, Aravind Akash, Ajay Raj, and Ganja Karuppu. Adding to the excitement, Y. G. Mahendran will make a special cameo, further amplifying anticipation for this highly anticipated project.

"The Greatest of All Time (GOAT)," directed by Venkat Prabhu, features a screenplay primarily developed by Venkat Prabhu and Viji, with additional input from K. Chandru and Ezhilarasu Gunasekaran. The story was also crafted by Venkat Prabhu. Produced by Kalpathi S. Aghoram, Kalpathi S. Ganesh, and Kalpathi S. Suresh, the film boasts cinematography by Siddhartha Nuni, editing by Venkat Raajen, and music composed by Yuvan Shankar Raja. The eagerly anticipated project is backed by AGS Entertainment.
