Choosing to adopt a healthy lifestyle has several benefits to the body such as a significant improvement of life expectancy, having a life free of disease and ailments, having a fit body, and the overall well being of the body.

Today, most of us focus on making outside changes in order to look healthy, such as using cosmetics. What we do not realize is that what we put in our body and how we handle it ultimately determines how we look, feel, energy levels, and the general health of the body. In order to be healthy, a person does not necessarily have to make radical changes to the lifestyle, rather, it involves making simple small changes to everyday life.

Changes such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, adding a fruit to a meal, having a glass of water at every opportune instance, and eating snacks in moderation are just some of the few steps to having a healthy life. In order to live healthy, a person should focus on keeping fit, eating healthy, checking on their weight, getting enough sleep, and avoiding risky behaviors such as smoking and taking alcohol in moderation.

One of the greatest impediments to living healthy is the lack of physical activity. Although many people recognize the benefits of keeping fit, they avoid it either because they think it is a waste of time, or they are used to a sedentary lifestyle. The truth is, the more a person engages in physical activity, the healthier they become.

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous, in fact, even simple activities such as gardening, walking, and partaking in domestic chores can greatly improve one’s health. Even recreational activities such as cycling, dancing and swimming can help in keeping fit.

The benefits of physical activity include a reduction of the risks of heart diseases and diabetes, improvement of mental health, strengthening of bones and muscles, and helping with a number of health niggles such as digestion and poor posture, among other benefits.

Eating well entails striving to have a balanced diet at all instances. A good diet not only helps in weight management, but it can also improve a person’s health and the overall quality of life. Every meal should include plenty of fruits and vegetables, grain products and legumes, but less of foods that contain more calories and fats. Although proteins rich foods such as meats are important to the body, they should be taken in moderation, and the focus should be on leaner meats (mainly white meat) and foods with little or no fat.

Consuming dairy products with little or no fats, such as skimmed milk, is another simple plan for reducing the quantity of calories entering the body. Eating habits such as eating while one is not hungry, skipping breakfast, and eating fast should be avoided. A person should also strive to drink as much water as possible since the body requires at least 8 cups of water each day.

One major step to being healthy is to maintain a healthy weight, and this may entail shedding off excess weight, gaining weight for underage persons, or maintaining that ideal weight. Eating right and participating in physical activities can go a long way in having a healthy weight and avoiding the health problems arising from being overweight.

To avoid being overweight or to shed off the extra pounds, a person should avoid high-calorie foods, or consume them in moderation and partake in regular physical activity. Trying to gain weight can be more difficult than losing weight. In gaining weight, one must not focus on consuming junk foods or snacks as this can clog the arteries and lead to heart diseases. Calories and fats must be obtained from healthy foods.

Failure to have enough sleep can have a negative impact on a person’s life, for instance, people who sleep less than seven hours a day are more exposed to catarrhal diseases than those who sleep for at least eight hours. The need for sleep varies among different persons, therefore, one should determine his/her own sleep requirements, and strive to have adequate sleep every day. As a caution, alcohol, or any other drug, should not be used to induce sleep as this would only lead to a pass out, not sleep.

Lifestyle choices such as avoiding cigarettes, avoiding excess calories from alcohol, sugar and fats, reducing the intake of high-fat foods, and partaking in physical activities should be emphasized on a day-to-day basis. Although alcohol has been found to be important to the body, it should be taken in moderation as it exposes the body to harmful compounds (cigarettes have the same effect).

All of us aspire to be healthy and engage in different activities to achieve this objective, however, there is no single way of ensuring that we are healthy for the rest our life. A healthy life is a cumulative product of various activities as outlined above, and discarding certain choices. The activities outlined must be observed on a day-to-day basis, and this does not have to mean making drastic changes, it is the simple, small changes that lead to a healthy life. In fact, drastic changes can lead to failure, or other side effects.

Living a healthy lifestyle has become an increasingly important topic as what researchers know about nutrition has evolved. In my opinion, despite some obvious hurdles it is easier than ever for people to be healthy and fit today.

The main hurdles related to fitness today revolve around technology. A few decades ago people led much more active lives that involved more exercising and comparatively less time in front of screens. The advent of computer technology generally and the smartphone in particular has precipitated more passive lifestyles globally. Smartphones are the chief culprit. People become easily addicted to the small dopamine rushes that phones provide and their availability means they are tailor-made to be everyone’s worst habit. This prevents many people from developing healthy exercise patterns and, in cases where people binge watch shows on Netflix or YouTube, can also cause over-eating.

Despite the above mentioned challenges, it is easy to be healthy today because of the amount of information on nutrition available. Doctors a hundred years ago recommended smoking cigarettes and the many sources of heart disease were only documented decades ago. This is the closest one to an 8 because you talk about both sides in a lot of detail with lots of support. If your other scores go up, then you can expect an 8. Only a couple things hold you back. 1. Make your opinion clearer in the conclusion. 2. Include an extra detail (check my sample answers to see what I mean). 3. The second paragraph is a little general and could use more specific support.

Grammar: Band 7

There are some slips – which aren’t so important but also some ingrained errors including with possessives and articles that bring you down to 8. To get up to 8, continue trying new complex structures so that you are more flexible with them and fix the few mistakes with grammar that keep coming up. This will take some time to fix.

Vocabulary: Band 7

Lots of great attempts and great vocabulary. Some of it is band 8. But there are also lots of inocrrect collocations and phrases that could be much better. This area will take the longest to improve to band 8.

Cohesion & Coherence: Band 7

Very clear and good in terms of structure and paragraphing. This one is also close to 8. Don’t us a linking work at the beginning of every sentence. Sometimes the wordiness and the complex grammar with mistakes make it more difficult to follow. Improve the grammar and vocabulary and this will easily be an 8 because you understand the structure and ideas very well!

Benefits of a Healthy Lifestyle: Essay Introduction

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as ‘A complete state of mental, physical and social well-being not merely the absence of disease.’ Physical fitness is one area of my lifestyle that I currently fail to meet this organization’s guidelines.

WHO’s guidelines recommend physical activity for all ages. In my bracket (18-64), it is recommended that I do a minimum of 150 minutes weekly of moderate-intensity aerobics in bouts of at least 10 minutes. Muscle strengthening undertakings should also be carried out at least twice a week.

It is in addition to leisure time and physical activities such as walking, hiking, swimming, and gardening. A healthy balanced diet should accompany it (Greenberg et al., 2004). An analysis of my routine depicts that I fall short of following these guidelines. As such, I have resolved to adopt a different lifestyle to enhance my physical well-being.

My new choice of lifestyle will entail healthy eating and increased physical exercise. Eating a healthy diet will be necessary for weight management and improvement of the quality of life, especially during my old age. Using scientific data to determine the amount of calories accrued from each food type, I can regulate my intake to ensure I only take the nutritionally recommended portions.

Nutritionists state that eating more fruits and cereals is vital in providing vitamins and minerals. Vitamins contribute to the functioning of various body processes. These include in-tissue growth, antioxidants, and mediating cellular regulation. They facilitate chemical reactions in the body cells by functioning as cofactors in enzymatic pathways.

Such other vitamins as biotin are essential in the formation of fatty acids. I also intend to lower my fat intake (Richards, 2009). In response, I will adopt only skim milk and fat-free yogurt and shift from full-fat salad dressing to non-fat alternatives. It is because fat has twice as much the number of calories as protein or carbohydrate sources.

Furthermore, fats raise cholesterol levels in the blood, increasing the risk of pulmonary disorders. Taking appropriate ratios of carbohydrates, proteins, and minerals such as potassium, iron, and calcium and taking the recommended daily water intake, my health will be on the way to recovery through losing unnecessary fat deposits (Winson, 2010).

Adopting a well-informed physical exercise program is another part of my healthy lifestyle change. Engaging in constant physical activity is known to burn calories. It, in turn, reduces the risk of accumulating excess energy trapped by adipose tissue in the body. It is essential in the regulation of body weight.

Physical activity also promotes the uptake of high-density lipoprotein, or the “good” cholesterol, while decreasing the uptake of the low-density cholesterol form known to be responsible for increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other disorders, including stroke, diabetes, cancer, and depression.

Regular physical activity also improves muscle strength and increases endurance. It is in addition to enhancing oxygen and nutrient delivery into body tissues. It significantly boosts the performance of the cardiovascular system enabling it to work efficiently (Hu et al., 2011). Therefore, I will reap all these benefits and lose weight by adopting this new lifestyle.

The benefits accrued from adopting a healthy lifestyle are numerous. In general terms, a nutritious diet and regular exercise contribute immensely to improving the quality of life. According to medical and nutrition professionals, proper nutrition helps curb the accumulation of unhealthy body fat and cholesterol. The appropriate diet will also reduce the risk of cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and heart disorders.

The reason is that the diet provides all the necessary elements for health maintenance (Thomson et al., 2011). Conversely, exercise reduces the chance of premature death from disorders related to inactive lifestyles.

By increasing the level of high-density cholesterol, exercise will minimize the risk of coronary and other related health complications. Regular exercise increases bone density in the long run, which is vital in preventing osteoporosis. It also enhances general body composition by maintaining acceptable limits of tissue-to-body fat ratio, thus discouraging overweight and obesity (Chodzko-Zajko et al., 2009).

The importance of adopting a healthy lifestyle cannot be overemphasized. The benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle are numerous, with overall improving the quality of life. The WHO’s description of health as the absolute harmony among physical, mental, and social life components and not necessarily the absence of disease indicates that a healthy lifestyle is essential.

However, the simplicity with which this can be achieved depends solely on the individual. One can effectively lead a healthy lifestyle by adopting healthy nutrition, physical exercises, adequate rest, stress management, and high self-esteem. It has informed my decision to change my lifestyle to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle.

Olympic sprinter Gabby Thomas wins gold: What to know about her healthy routine

Gabby Thomas is one of the fastest people in the world. The U.S. runner has won three gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics : the women’s 200-meter race, the 4x100 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay.

“You prepare for this moment and train so hard for this moment, but when it actually comes, it’s indescribable,” Thomas said after her decisive victory in the 200-meter final on Aug. 6.

It took her just 21.83 seconds to cover the distance and finish in first place.

She calls sprinting her “happy place.”

“I feel so happy running when I see the finish line in my sights, I just have that boost that I know I can get there, stretch my legs out and go,” Thomas told NBC after the 200-meter semifinals.

The 27-year-old athlete previously competed in the Tokyo Olympic Games, winning a bronze medal in the women’s 200-meter and silver in the women’s 4x100 meter relay.

Thomas is also impressive off the track. She holds a bachelor’s degree in neurobiology from Harvard University and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Texas Health Science Center.

After training three-to-six hours a day, Thomas volunteers at a clinic in Austin, Texas, for people who don't have health insurance. She leads a hypertension program there and told NBC News she ultimately dreams of running a hospital or a nonprofit to expand access to healthcare.

She calms herself down before running

TODAY's Hoda Kotb marveled at how calm Thomas appeared when she arrived in Paris as the heavy favorite to win the 200-meter race.

"I knew coming into this that it was going to be an immense amount of pressure and just so much weight on my shoulders in a way that I'd never experienced before," Thomas said in a segment that aired on Aug. 7.

"I realized I was going to have to compartmentalize that."

She did it by keeping things light, joking around with the other competitors and "not making the moment too heavy" — until it was time to set up for the race in the starting blocks.

While other runners might turn to high-tempo music for a boost of energy before they compete, Thomas doesn’t listen to her “pump-up playlist” at all before her race.

“I want to be so Zen, I want to be so relaxed, and I want to preserve my energy,” she told NBC’s Savannah Sellers .

“And then the split second when the gun goes off, that’s when I want to feel that pump-up energy.”

To avoid being distracted by her competitors or the crowd, she picks a point on the track and just concentrates on sprinting toward it. “You need to have a focus when you’re in that moment,” she says.

She loves the rush of running

Thomas is considered a late bloomer to the sport. She initially played softball and soccer as a teen, and ran in high school, but it wasn’t until her time at Harvard that she started becoming a standout athlete in track.

“It’s really easy to fall in love with running,” Thomas told USA Today . “It can be painful at times, but it’s such a beautiful sport. You set goals and go after them in the purest form — and when you achieve those goals, it’s such an addicting feeling.”

Winning the gold medal took a lot of years and a lot of patience, she said on TODAY, thanking everyone who helped her along the way.

"I don't think I've ever worked so hard for anything in my life," Thomas added. "It all came together for this moment."

She prioritizes sleep

“As you mature as an athlete, you realize just how important sleep is,” Thomas told The Washington Post . “Not just to be an elite athlete, but just to be a functional human.”

She now gets at least eight hours of sleep a night .

Sufficient sleep is important for peak athletic performance, the International Olympic Committee noted in a 2019 statement addressing  mental health in elite athletes.

All healthy adults — whether they’re competing in the Olympics or not — need to sleep at least  seven hours a night  for optimal health, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine advises.

She takes care of her mental health

The athlete makes time for recovery and rest, and follows her passions other than running.

“The way I became successful in track and field was basically running track part time, and I think for me, that’s really important for my mental health,” Thomas told NBC’s Kate Snow . “Just having other things in my life that help fulfill my goals and make me feel fulfilled.”

That includes volunteering at the Austin clinic, where she likes knowing she’s making a difference in people’s lives.

Thomas also spends time with her dog, a pug named Rico. The athlete says she gets a lot of emotional support from her furry companion.

When things “aren’t going super well, it’s easy to feel like I’m a failure. Instead of sitting in that, I got a friend. Adopting Rico is the best thing I ever did,” Thomas told Women’s Running .

She enjoys low-impact exercise

The sprinter makes room for Pilates in her routine, embracing the way her body shakes during the intense core workout. She describes it as “really hard,” but also relaxing.

“Pilates is humbling,” Thomas told Women’s Health . “As an Olympian in that room, not being able to do a lot of the exercises that they’re doing, you really realize how many small muscles that you don’t activate every day.”

Pilates can be done on a mat or on a reformer machine. When TODAY’s Craig Melvin tried the reformer version , he called it “perhaps the most intense exercise” he’d ever done.
