A great example of a recent urban social movement in history was the Black Panther Party. The Black Panther Party was a subculture group within the black communities that started in the 1960s. This movement exemplifies the alternative urbanism framework because it shows how a large community can come together from the inspiration of a few good and righteous people with the intent of trying to create peace and unity within the black community. On October 15, 1966, the Black Panther Party was founded in Oakland, California, to protect black people from police brutality. After noticing the ill-treatment of black people by racist law enforcement officers, the founders formed the Black Panther Party to build a community and to ensure that the constitutional rights of black people were being implemented. Although the party was founded to protect black Americans, the Black Panther Party was not trying to oppress anyone. They demanded rights and fair treatment for all people of color and for all oppressed communities.
The Black Panther Party presented many liberal programs. One program specifically was the Free Breakfast for Children program. This program was started to promote the liveliness and survival of black people and children. In addition to the Free Breakfast for Children program, the Black Panther Party created many more liberal programs. They created a free ambulance program, a free dental program, and free health clinics and provided free sickle cell anemia testing. They taught many classes such as nutrition, politics, economics, self-defense, and first aid. They provided free bus transportation to upstate prisons for family members of inmates and patients in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers. They also handled pest control and generously gave away coats and shoes to numerous people in the winter.
Although the Black Panther Party tried to help and empower black and oppressed communities, President Lyndon B. Johnson belittled and demeaned the Black Panther Party along with other nationwide leaders. They labeled the Black Panther Party as “the number one threat to the United States of America.” After being characterized as a terrorist organization, President Richard Nixon led the FBI in taking down the Black Panther Party. The FBI worked hard on taking apart the Free Breakfast for Children Program and other community social programs that were started by the Black Panther Party. In addition, these agents also made-up false information when they arrested any Black Panther Party members. They intimidated witnesses and coerced them into false testimonies. One of the FBI’s main strategies in taking down the Black Panther Party was to instigate hatred between vital leaders of the Black Panther Party which was a major cause of the downfall of the Black Panther Party.
Had the FBI not intervened in the Black Panther Party program, I believe that they would still be around right now. Although the party no longer exists, their message and what they stood for left long-lasting impressions on society and the black community today. The Black Panther Party were strong, progressive people with a legacy that we will never forget.
