As a result, I began rushing and introduced an error into the code of the software my team was updating. The error led to a memory leak. We became aware of the issue when the performance was hindered, though we didn’t immediately know the cause. I dove back into the code, reviewing recent changes, and, ultimately, determined the issue was a mistake on my end. When I made that discovery, I took several steps. First, I let my team know that the error was mine and let them know its nature. Second, I worked with my team to correct the issue, resolving the memory leak. Finally, I took this as a lesson about delegation. I began assigning work to my team more effectively, a move that allowed me to excel as a manager and help them thrive as contributors. It was a crucial learning moment, one that I have valued every day since.”

3. If you identify a potential risk in a project, what steps do you take to prevent it?

Yes, this is also a problem-solving question. The difference is, with this one, it’s not about fixing an issue; it’s about stopping it from happening. Still, you use problem-solving skills along the way, so it falls in this question category.

If you can, use an example of a moment when you mitigated risk in the past. If you haven’t had that opportunity, approach it theoretically, discussing the steps you would take to prevent an issue from developing.

“If I identify a potential risk in a project, my first step is to assess the various factors that could lead to a poor outcome. Prevention requires analysis. Ensuring I fully understand what can trigger the undesired event creates the right foundation, allowing me to figure out how to reduce the likelihood of those events occurring. Once I have the right level of understanding, I come up with a mitigation plan. Exactly what this includes varies depending on the nature of the issue, though it usually involves various steps and checks designed to monitor the project as it progresses to spot paths that may make the problem more likely to happen. I find this approach effective as it combines knowledge and ongoing vigilance. That way, if the project begins to head into risky territory, I can correct its trajectory.”

  • Point : State the solution in plain terms. 
  • Reasons: Follow up the solution by detailing your case — and include any data or insights that support your solution. 
  • Example: In addition to objective data and insights, drive your answer home by contextualizing the solution in a real-world example.
  • Point : Reiterate the solution to make it come full circle.

Be mindful of your thought processes when you face a difficult problem.

Is your initial reaction to panic or are you calm and enthusiastic to tackle it? Is the problem stopping you from focusing on everything else you’re working on? Do you look at the problem as a whole or do you break it down?

Understanding how you think and approach the problem will help you know yourself and improve your problem-solving skills, but it’ll also make it easier to answer these tricky questions during an interview.

Tailor your answers to problem-solving interview questions so that you cover specific details, actions, and skills relevant to the position. If possible, list the results and share lessons learned from an experience you’re describing.

We’re not saying you should lie and make up a story about your problem-solving skills for each position you apply for; remember that this is a broad set of skills and you surely have something relevant from your past experience that you can bring up.

Prove you have outstanding problem-solving skills by listing clear outcomes for every problem you solved. They can be quantitative or qualitative.

💡 Fixed a process? Say that it improved team productivity by X%.

💡 Handled a difficult client? If they became a VIP customer later on, mention it.

Whenever possible, use the STAR (situation-task-action-result) method in your answer:

  • (T) ask: What tasks you planned on doing to tackle the issue, your contribution.
  • (A) ction you took (step-by-step).
  • (R) esult of your efforts.

It’ll help you create a well-rounded answer that’s informative and engaging. Plus, using this method to prepare answers in advance will help you memorize the story quickly and easily.

✅ Bear in mind that not every problem-solving interview question can be answered with a STAR method. Some questions will be very specific and will ask for quick and short information about a certain tool or similar. Other questions, the ones beginning with “Give me an example when…” or “Tell me about a time when…” will be the perfect opportunity to use the STAR method.

According to a study , in a team, task completion can be independent , when each team member completes their own activities, sequential , when activities go from one team member to another, reciprocal , when activities are done back-and-forth between team members, or intensive , when all team members work on activities and problem-solving simultaneously.

Recruiters want to get to know more about your ideal teamwork process model and how you connect with others to solve problems.

Your answer will tell them if you’re a good team problem-solver, team player, and if you’re able to give and share credit, as well as take responsibility if something goes wrong.

Remember, the more specific you get in your answer, the better the impression you make on the interviewer. So here, I recommend paying equal attention to a specific situation in which you solved a problem and using the STAR method to tell that story.

Ambitious_Tell_4852 , when discussing the question “Give an example of a challenge you faced and how you overcame it,” said: 

“Clearly, that is the standard trick question designed for a prospective new hire to tell a prospective employer about his/her professional weaknesses. Oldest “negative Nelli’’ question imaginable during the interview process. Always keep your answer thorough and positive albeit sickeningly sugar-coated! 😁”

This is, straight-out, a bad piece of advice. If an interviewer wants to hear about your weaknesses, they will ask “What is your greatest weakness?” 

A question about overcoming a challenge isn’t a trick question at all. I’d argue it’s actually an opportunity to share some of your proudest wins. But when it comes to answering this question, it’s true that your answers do need to be thorough and positive. This doesn’t mean you need to sugar-coat anything, though. Interviewers don’t want to hear you downplaying your challenges. On the contrary, they want to hear you speak about them honestly and explain what you learned from them. And being able to do so puts a healthy, positive spin on the situation. To put it shortly: provide a real example from your past, answer this question honestly, and emphasize the results and lessons learned. 

Here’s an opinion from a hiring manager, Hugh on Quora, about how to answer a question about a time you needed to solve a problem:

“It really doesn’t matter what the problem you describe is or how you solved it. What I am looking/listening for is 1) the size of the problem (the bigger, the better, a broken shoelace before going out on a date is not an impressive problem) and 2) a step-by-step process to a satisfactory solution (if suddenly all variables fell into place does not show me that you solved the problem — you were just there when it solved itself).

I am also looking/listening for an example of how you solve a problem after you are hired. I may have to explain it to my superiors, and I would like to know that I have a complete and accurate story to tell.”

A good piece of advice from someone who has first-hand hiring experience. When talking about problem-solving, a detailed description of your process is key. The only thing I wouldn’t agree with is having to choose a “big” problem. If you do have experience solving a big problem, that’s great. But sometimes you won’t have a major problem to talk about, and it largely depends on your level of experience and your position. So pick a relevant difficulty, even if it’s not that big, in which you displayed skills relevant to the role you’re applying for.

Situation: Start with a problem statement that clearly defines the situation. 

Task: Explain your role in the situation. What is, or would be your responsibility?

Result: Share what you achieved or would hope to resolve through your problem-solving process.

What’s a hiring manager really asking? Employers want to know that your problem-solving has a process. They want to hear you break down a problem into a set of steps to solve it.

Sample answer: I was working in sales for a wholesale retailer. A regular client wrongly communicated the pricing of a unit. I realized this immediately, and rather than pointing out the error, I quickly double-checked with my supervisor to see if we could respect the price.

I informed the client of the error and that we were happy to keep the price he was given. It made him feel like he'd gotten a fair deal and trusted my authority as a sales rep even more. The loss wasn't significant, but saving face in front of the client was.

Sample answer: I've had plenty of experience dealing with unhappy clients. I've learned two important things: their frustration isn’t a personal attack against me, and we have the same goal to solve the problem. Knowing that helps me stay calm, listen carefully to the client's situation, and do my best to identify where the situation went astray.

Once we identify the problem, if I can handle it myself, I communicate exactly what we’ll do for the client and how. What steps we’ll take depend on the client, but I always start by proposing solutions to show I care about a path forward, and then keep them updated on my progress to implementing that fix.

I took full responsibility and used that moment to understand that I wasn't trusting my team's abilities. I apologized to my team for overstepping boundaries and worked to let go of my old role completely.

  • Superficial answers. Candidates who choose the easy way out of a problem usually don’t consider all aspects and limitations of the situation. Opt for candidates who analyze the data you’ve given them and ask for more information to better dig into the problem.
  • Cover up the problem or minimize its significance. Unaddressed problems could quickly escalate into bigger issues. Employees who leave things for later mightn’t be result-oriented or engaged in their jobs.

Without it, projects are almost always doomed to fail. “In my previous role as a marketing content writer with a major software company, I strived to apply this motto to my work every single day. “Here’s an example: About a year ago, I was responsible for overseeing and launching a new content strategy aimed at driving up consumer engagement. From the very outset, I understood that that particular project could be run off the rails if we did not take into account a considerable number of factors. “I won’t bore you with all of the nitty-gritty details, but the point is that this was a particularly sensitive project that required diligent and careful risk assessment. “Having realized that, my colleagues and I devised a comprehensive and flexible strategy for managing many risks that we envisioned would be awaiting us down the road. That initial step – looking ahead towards the future and mapping out the terrain of potential hazards – proved to be an essential measure for the success of the project.”

Do you consider your problem-solving capabilities to be above average?

Explanation: Hiring managers are always on the lookout for job candidates that stand out from the crowd. It’s even better when they can find a job candidate who knows that they stand out and who expresses that knowledge by being confident in their abilities.

At the same time, it’s never in a job candidate’s best interests to come across as egotistical or arrogant. When you’re responding to a question like this (that is, a question that’s focused on your ability to assess your own talents), it’s important to do your best to come across as self-assured but not pompous.

“Yes, all things considered, I would say that I have a talent for risk assessment, problem-solving, and risk mitigation. “That said, I can’t claim complete ownership over these abilities. In most cases, my demonstrated success in managing risk and solving problems in the workplace can be attributed at least as much to my team members as it can to me. For me to be able to be a successful problem-solver, it helps to be surrounded by colleagues whom I can trust.”

How would you describe your typical immediate reaction to unexpected challenges? Do you prefer to jump straight into the problem-solving process, or do you more commonly take some time to analyze and assess the problem before you dive in?

Explanation: This question is aimed at gauging your patience levels. This one can be a bit tricky because employers will sometimes prefer different responses – it all depends on the type of position and employer you’re applying for.

If you’re applying for a role in a quick-paced working environment that demands swift action , it will benefit you to describe your problem-solving strategy as unflinching and immediate.

If, on the other hand, the role you’re applying to does not demand such immediate action, it will probably be better to describe yourself as a more removed and relaxed problem solver.

But as always, you should never lie to your employer. Most of us will fall somewhere in the middle of these two types of problem solvers and will thereby have no difficulty painting ourselves honestly as one or the other.

However, if you’re definitely one type or the other, then you should describe yourself as such. This will make it much more likely that you’ll end up in a position that will be maximally rewarding both for you and for your employer.

“In most cases, my response to an unexpected problem will entirely depend on the nature of the problem at hand. If it demands immediate action, then I’ll dive right in without hesitation. “If, however, I determine that it would be more beneficial to take a step back and analyze the nature of the problem before we begin to meddle with it, then that’s exactly what I’ll do. “Generally speaking, I would say that I prefer the latter approach – that is, to take a step back and think things through before I begin to try to find a solution. In my experience, this makes it much easier for everyone involved to arrive at a practical and sustainable solution. “That said, I’m also perfectly capable of jumping straight into a problem if it demands immediate attention.”

Can you tell us about a time in which you had to explain a technically complicated subject to a client or customer? How did you approach that process, and how did it turn out?

Explanation: Strong communication skills are essential in the modern workplace. That means that employers tend to seek out job candidates that communicate well with their colleagues and individuals who have varying professional backgrounds and skill sets, including clients, customers, and third-party professionals.

“I recall an incident from many years ago – while I was working as a software engineer for a prominent robotics company – in which I found myself in the position of having to describe incredibly complex engineering details to a client. “This client had no prior experience in software engineering or artificial intelligence, so I had to relate this esoteric information more or less in layman terms. “Thankfully, I was able to employ some useful metaphors and analogies to communicate the information in a manner that this client could appreciate and understand. We went on to establish a successful collaborative partnership that flourished for four years.”

How would you rate your ability to work and succeed without direct supervision from your managers?

Explanation: Employers always tend to place a high value on job candidates who are self-motivated and can maintain high levels of productivity without constant supervision.

This is especially true now that the COVID-19 pandemic has suddenly made it necessary for so many millions of employers to transition to a remote workforce model. This question is designed to assess a candidate’s ability to stay focused and motivated while working remotely or without supervision.

“I’ve always considered myself – and my resume and references will support this – to be an exceptionally self-motivated individual, even when I’m working from home. “In fact, like many employees, I often find that my productivity levels tend to increase when I’m working remotely. I strive to set a positive example for my colleagues, even when we’re not all working under the same roof.”

Interviewing Successfully

Generally speaking, the best strategy for success in interviewing for a new job is doing your research beforehand. That means that you should be intimately familiar with the role, department, and company that you’re applying to before you step into the room (or log on to the Zoom meeting ) on the day of your interview.

When you preemptively take the time to carefully research the organization as a whole – and the responsibilities of the job opportunity in particular – you’ll minimize your chances of being caught off guard by an unexpectedly difficult question .

Still, there is only so much background information that you can uncover about an organization and a role before a job interview. No matter how carefully you prepare and how much background research you conduct, there are very likely going to be curveball questions during your job interview that you can’t predict.

Curveball Questions

In fact, many employers prefer to ask curveball questions (in addition to more run of the mill job interview questions) because they provide an insightful glimpse into a job candidate’s analytical thinking skills – not just their ability to memorize and recite answers to more common interview questions .

To that end, many hiring managers will ask job candidates to answer one or more problem-solving questions during a typical job interview. In contrast to traditional interview questions (such as: “Why do you think that you would be a good fit for this role?”

4. If you were given two very urgent tasks by different members of the management team at roughly the same time, how would you decide which task to tackle first?

This question tests the candidate's ability to communicate effectively. In this instance, candidates should approach both managers about the other's request. If no clear guidance is given, the candidate should provide a reasonable time estimate of when each task would be completed.

Red flag: the candidate rushes to complete both tasks in the order they were given.

5. How do you decide when a different problem-solving approach is needed?

Not all problems can be solved in the same way. This question reveals whether the candidate can analyze a problem fully before applying an appropriate solution, remain agile during the problem-solving process, and reflect on systems once they have been implemented.

Red flag: the candidate will only try a different approach if the outcome is a failure the first time.

6. Tell me about a time when you predicted a problem related to staffing or structural changes in your department. What did you do to resolve the issue?

This question tests the candidate's ability to identify a concern and bring it to the attention of management before it becomes a problem. Look for candidates who speak up, propose reasonable alternatives, and assist with changes.

Red flags: the candidate has never identified any issues in the workplace, or they didn't want to get involved even though they knew there would be a problem.

7. What do you do when you cannot seem to find an effective solution to a problem?

Everyone gets stuck sometimes. This question reveals how the candidate finds new ideas on how to proceed.

Red flag: the candidate is unable to be resourceful and gives up.

8. What improvements have you made to your workplace in the last year?

Candidates with great problem-solving abilities should be able to identify areas that can be improved, and either take steps to implement those changes or initiate the process.

Red flag: the candidate has not contributed to any improvements in the workplace.

9. Provide an example of a time when you solved a problem without the input of management. What was the result?

This question highlights the candidate's ability to make decisions and solve problems by themselves.

Evaluates whether the candidate can devise innovative ideas to solve problems.

Reveals whether the candidate can speak up when they see a problem in the workplace.

Red flag: even if management still went ahead with their original decision, candidates should feel comfortable pointing out problems in the workplace. A red flag would be if the candidate noticed an issue but chose to ignore it.

This is a great question to learn more about the candidate's personality and problem-solving skills. It tests honesty and whether the candidate was able to incorporate what they learned into future decisions.

Hi everyone! In this article we're going to talk a bit about technical interviews. I'll share a few tips that, based on my experience, might help you go through these interviews successfully.

I originally wrote this article more than a year ago, before getting my first job offer as a developer.

I'm sharing this with you now because I recently went through another interview process. And I found that the same concepts and thoughts that helped me get my first job offer allowed me to pass all the interviews successfully again. 🙂

My Background

I took up coding more or less a year ago. I started learning out of pure curiosity, and as I learned more about it and was able to build personal projects, I just fell in love with it.

I got so obsessed and passionate about it that I dedicated all the free time I had to coding, reading about code, watching videos about code, and just learning as much as I possible could, because for me it was fun and interesting!

Time passed and at a point I started imagining myself working as a developer. First it was like a blurry thought, and then I started thinking about it seriously and learning about what I needed to do to get to that point.

My learning journey and the approach I took towards becoming a dev will probably be the subject of another article, but my point is that I made it! I recently got an offer for my first job as a full time developer and I couldn’t be happier about it.

And there were many things and learning experiences I had to go through to get to this point, but I’d say the toughest one – and the one I was less prepared for – was technical interviews.

What are Technical Interviews Like?

I come from a social sciences background, and most of the time, within that field, there’s nothing too “technical” to talk about during interviews. Employers normally hire you based on your experience and behavior during interviews.

But in the coding field it’s really different. Experience is valuable, of course, but employers also value projects you can show to them, theoretical knowledge about different programming topics, and, most of all, the problem solving skills you can show off during technical interviews.

In almost all selection processes I went through, there was a technical interview in which an interviewer tossed me a problem and I had to solve it live with them looking at me the whole time.

This is a standard practice for coding jobs, but I wasn’t prepared at all. I failed miserably more than once, and these experiences were some of the most embarrassing and frustrating moments in my professional life so far.

At times I felt stupid for even thinking I’d be capable of switching careers at almost 30. I thought I just wasn’t smart enough. But luckily I kept going, researched about technical interviews, learned, practiced, and kept failing until I didn’t fail anymore.

Technical interviews are tough and can be really stressful if you’re not prepared correctly. Also, even though I successfully passed a selection process, I know I still have a lot to learn about this and that I’ll need to perfect this skill to further grow my career in the future. So here are my main tips for nailing your technical interviews.

1. Prepare for the Interview

This is important for all kind of interviews, but for technical interviews I think it’s crucial. Your chances of passing these evaluations are way lower if you don’t prepare correctly for them.

Here are some ideas that allowed me to better prepare for these interviews.

Do Your Research

Find out about technical interviews in general, how are they normally organized, what interviewers ask and what do they intend to measure, what kind of problems do companies toss at you, and what are the best approaches towards interviews.

The internet is an infinite resource of knowledge, so don’t waste it! Google about everything you can and take advantage of the experience of the thousands of people who have gone through similar situations and share their experiences.

Practice Solving Problems

Problem solving is a skill just like any other. There is specific knowledge you’ll need to get good at it, but most of it is practice and getting your brain to be comfortable in that situation.

There are tons of websites that contain the types of problems you’ll see during interviews. freeCodeCamp has an amazing course designed for this. Some other cool resources are hackerrank.com , leetcode.com , codewars.com , exercism.io , app.codesignal.com , and algoexpert.io .

Solve as many problems as you can from any of these sites and you’ll start getting good at them.

And when you practice, at first it’s okay to just worry about solving the problem. But once you get comfortable enough, a great idea is to try to make your practice as similar as possible to an actual interview. And by this I mean setting a timer, explaining your solution out loud, analyzing your final algorithm and refactoring…just basically following all the steps you’d normally follow in an actual interview.

If your practice is similar to the actual situation, once you get to that situation you’ll feel more confident because in some way you’ve already been there.

Build a Theoretical Foundation

Besides actually practicing, learning theoretical concepts about algorithms and data structures is a great idea to get better at solving these problems.

Think about it as adding tools to your toolbox. The more tools and concepts you have in your mind, the more problems will sound familiar or ring a bell in your brain, and from that you'll be more able to arrive at a solution.

There are many resources on the internet, some free and some paid. A course about data structures and algorithms is pretty much a must for any programmer, so I encourage you to find a good one. Here are a couple you can start with:

  • Learn Data Structures from a Google Engineer
  • Learn Algorithms and Data Structures in Python
  • Learn about Algorithms and Data Structures

Of course also theoretical knowledge about your programming language of choice and any other tools in your stack (frameworks, libraries, databases, and so on) is also very important.

Imitate Others

It’s ok to run into problems you don’t know how to solve or to come up with solutions that are not the best suited ones.

In these type of situations, or always actually, it’s a good idea to take a look at how other people solved that same problem and learn from them. What approach did they take? What ideas did they have? Did they get stuck? How did they move towards the solution?

Analyze their solution and their behavior, identify what works for them, think if that could work for you and if the answer is yes, copy them! It’s crucial that you deeply understand why their solution works and how their logic works. You want to internalize the logical approach, not the code, as that’s just an after effect.

Looking at problem solutions and videos of mock interviews is a good idea to get this kind of data.

Understand What Kind of Interview You'll Have

I mentioned the most classic type of technical interview is the one based on algorithms and data structures, in which the interviewer will give you a problem to solve through an algorithm.

But I found that there're also interviews that are mostly theoretical, in the sense that the interviewer will ask questions to measure your knowledge about a given programming language, framework, library, design and architecture patterns, and so on.

Another kind of interview is where the interviewer shows you an actual project or asks you to build one. During the interview you discuss the decisions you made to build it or implement new features/modifications on it.

Each kind of interview is different and might require different preparation, so it's always a good idea to ask the company what will the interview be based on, and prepare accordingly.

2. Breathe and Think Things Through

Once you've seen and gone through a ton of examples and start feeling somewhat confident around coding problems, it’s time to get to the deeper stuff.

Here are some tips that helped me go through the interviews successfully.

This sounds crazy right? The best approach to solving most coding problems is actually not coding, or at least not right away .

No matter how anxious or secure you are about the idea you have in mind, I find it better to always take a step back and make sure you understand things deeply before going to the details and breaking out the code.

So how do you do that?

Understand the Problem

The first step to solving a problem is actually understanding it. And to understand it, the best idea is to “make it yours”, and internalize it.

A good idea is to read the exercise twice, repeat it again in your own words, and go through multiple examples (simple ones, complex ones, examples with null or invalid inputs…).

No matter how silly, complex or simple the problem may seem, this helps you make sure you understand it properly and gives your brain data and time to come up with solution ideas.

Make Sure You Understood It

Repetitive? Yeah, but effective. Check and make sure you understood what you need to do and how your function will work.

Ask yourself, what are the inputs going to be? What will be the output? Check for edge cases. Will you always receive the same input or could you expect different formats? Do you have to be prepared for strange cases or does the exercise restrict the kind of situation you’ll encounter?

It’s better to clear out all this things before even starting to think about a solution.

Explore Your Toolbox

I said that learning theoretical concepts and practicing is like adding tools to your problem solving toolbox. When you see a new problem, it’s a good idea to explore that toolbox and see if any of the concepts or solutions you’ve used in the past could work here.

Could it help to use some sort of counter? What about implementing some sort of data structure to help you out? Could you use pointers or a sliding window? Would it be a good idea to take a divide and conquer approach? What about recursion? Could sorting the input help for anything?

You don’t necessarily have to know the exact path to take, but comparing the problem to previous patterns you’ve seen can help spark ideas in your mind.

Of course the more you practice solving problems and learning about possible solutions, the more patterns you’ll have to remember and compare.

Break Down the Problem

Once you’ve analyzed the problem deeply, hopefully you’ll have at least an idea of how to tackle it, or where to start.

A great idea here is to try to think about the different steps you need to take to get to your solution and write down those steps to analyze them, check if your logic is correct, and later use them as little memory helpers and “instructions” for you to translate into code.

Simplifying your solution through steps and specially writing them down will often help you identify flaws in your logic or cases you didn’t think about before.

This is great because you’re at a stage when it’s really easy to modify your approach or lean towards a different idea. You didn’t waste time coding or getting yourself into a maze of logic that doesn’t actually work.

Simplify the Problem

Specially when facing complex and difficult problems, a good idea is to first ignore the main difficulty of the problem and try to solve a similar, simpler version of it.

When you nail that solution, bring the main difficulty back and see if you can translate your solution to it.

Visualize the Problem

Complex problems are sometimes difficult to get your head around. Having a whiteboard, either a physical or a digital one, is always a great idea.

Visually stimulating your brain by drawing up the problem or an idea can be a good approach to buy yourself some time and see if that perspective shows you some data you didn’t notice.

Start to Write Your Code

So once you have a clear idea of the steps you’ll need to cover to get to the solution, it’s time for translating that into code. This should be the simple part if you’re comfortable enough with the language.

A thought to keep in mind here is that if you can’t remember something very specific, don’t let that hold you down – pseudo code it and carry on with the rest of the solution.

Talk to your interviewer and see if they can help you with that part, or ask if they'll let you Google it. In most cases this will be ok and the important thing will be to show that you nailed the correct logic to solve the problem.

Test Your Code

Test your solution at every step and at the end. There’s nothing more annoying than writing a ton of code and later seeing it fail without knowing the exact cause.

Test your code and your logic at every step of the solution, as this will allow you to catch bugs earlier and will save you from wasting time and effort.

Of course testing at the end is important to check if your solution actually works! So throw your function different inputs and edge cases to see if it behaves as expected.

Analyze the Solution

Once you've gotten to the solution, you’re not done yet. It’s a great idea to show your interviewer you can analyze what you did too.

Ask yourself and tell them, what’s the big O complexity of your solution? Can you think of a way to improve the performance or the memory usage of your algorithm? Is there a way to make your function easier to read and understand?

Even if you can’t think about how to code it exactly, it’s great to show them that you’re the kind of developer who is always going to look for improvements and not settle for something that just works.

Improve Your Solution

Of course, if you can find ways to optimize your solution and know how to code it, do it!

And about this, in a coding interview situation you’ll rarely come up with the perfect solution for a problem. You’re under pressure and on the clock, so it’s perfectly ok to come up with a so-so solution and then refactor it until it reaches an acceptable level.

It’s often better to show you can solve the problem even if not in the perfect way than spend all your time just thinking about the perfect solution.

Talk to Your Interviewer

Talk with your interviewer during the whole process. What your interviewer is trying to measure is your problem solving ability and your level of comfort with your programming language of choice.

That is a hard thing to measure if you don’t open your mouth and just code away.

It’s crucial that you talk to your interviewer and let them know what you’re thinking, what is your thought process, what ideas are you having, how are you understanding the problem, what logic are you going to follow with your solution and why are you making decisions.

Talk to them, ask questions, explain yourself, and if you get stuck or don’t know how to go on, explain to them exactly the thing that is giving you trouble. In most cases you’ll get some help and more importantly you’ll show them you’re actually trying to work towards a solution.

Listen to Your Interviewer

When you’re being given the problem to solve – and specially if you get tips or feedback from your interviewers – pay attention! No matter if you think you already have the best idea or if there’s something that’s driving you crazy and need to solve right now, just drop it and listen to what you’re being told.

If you don’t listen to feedback, you’re giving a very negative signal to your possible future employers. Think about it: would you like to work with someone that doesn’t listen to feedback? Besides, feedback will certainly help you solve your problem, so listen!

3. Control Your Emotions

This for me was the toughest part of the interviewing process, and it's something I didn’t really find a lot of information about when researching technical interviews.

Dealing with the anxiety and frustration these situations can provoke is hard, but also a crucial step to improve your performance.

So here are some things that have helped me in this regard.

Prepare Your Body and Mind

Interviews are stressful situations in which you have to deal with expectations and perform to reach those expectations while being judged by other people.

I’ve always felt uncomfortable in these type of situations so I’m quite familiar with the type of anxiety you might feel.

Something that helps me is try to think about it like the moment of a game for a sports player or when actors get out on stage. You normally see these people trying to warm up and focus before they start to perform, right? There’s a reason for that – and it’s that this preparation actually enhances performance and gets you ready to give your best.

It may sound stupid at first, but stretching, warming up your voice, meditating, imagining the moment in your mind and picturing yourself being successful in the moment are all things that will push you towards doing nicely in this important moment.

Be Confident

Easier said than done, right? Absolutely. Confidence for most people isn’t something you can just turn off and on, but something you build along the way and comes with lots of practice, studying, and preparation behind it.

You'll build confidence with the work you do prior to the interview, but once you’re in the moment it’s important to remember that you want to show the interviewers you have confidence in yourself as a coder and that you trust yourself to solve any problem you face.

This doesn’t mean you have to know absolutely everything and be able to solve any complex problem absolutely by yourself. Rather, it means that you won’t panic when you face something you don’t know how to solve at first, and that you have the ability to slowly analyze the problem, break it down, and work towards a solution.

Stress, anxiety, and the wish to show that you can solve the problem can make you rush more than you need to. And rushing can lead to missing key information, flaws in your logic, bugs in your code, and errors in general.

So take your time, actually, take more time than you actually need. Analyze the heck out of the problem, talk slowly, code slowly, think slowly, and remember to breath. Things are easier to deal with when you take your time and slow-mo the process.

Don’t Take it Personally – or Do...

You’ll mess up at some point, that’s a certainty. Especially in your first interviews, you’ll probably fail and feel miserable about it. It’s just the way it is, and it's a step that is needed for you to understand where you need to improve.

A key issue here is how you deal with that frustration. I could tell you to think about it as a process, to not get mad when you fail, to be patient… But if you’re an anxious and self demanding person as I am, you’ll be very frustrated when you fail, and there’s nothing you can do to avoid it.

But how do you deal with that? Do you get depressed and quit coding forever? Do you get scared of interviews and never apply for a job ever again?

Personally, I get very mad at myself when I fail at something or find out I don’t know something I "was supposed" to know. I get mad at myself for not preparing correctly or for missing things, and even though that anger feels bad at first, later on is something that pushes me forward.

I feel so bad about it that I make absolutely sure I won't fail at that again, and I practice as hard as I can to avoid being in that situation again.

Different approaches work for different people, but the thing is to handle your emotions in a way that pushes you forward and not backwards.

Learn from Your Mistakes

As it’s a certainty you’ll mess up, the smart thing to do is to learn from the errors you made and try to not make them again.

Always try to take note of the problems you were presented and your solutions, analyze your mistakes, analyze other possible approaches you could have taken, what optimizations you didn’t see, and what key concepts you didn’t remember at that moment.

Also always ask your interviewers for feedback about what you could have done better. This information is gold if you get the best of it.

If you love coding, you probably have lots of fun doing it. Never forget that, no matter the context.

In interviews, try to approach each problem with curiosity rather than fear of failing. Try to show your interviewers you’re enthusiastic about problems, because you’re probably going to work with similar stuff on a daily basis.

Plus if you’re having fun and thinking in a positive way, you’ll be more relaxed and your mind will be clearer, which of course helps your problem solving skills.

If you pass or if you fail, at the end it doesn’t matter, in the sense that your approach and behavior should stay the same.

Just as code can always be improved, so can you as a programmer. You should always keep learning, keep getting better, keep practicing, keep facing stuff you didn’t know anything about and eventually overcoming it.

So don’t get too high if you pass or too low if you miss – just keep coding and keep learning.

3 Problem-Solving Questions You'll Get in an Interview—and How to Answer Each One

Over the course of your interview, the hiring manager needs to figure out a few things. She needs to get a better sense of how your skills and experience line up with the open role. She needs to figure out how likely you are to fit in with your prospective teammates. And she needs to find out how sharp your problem-solving techniques are in an effort to figure out if you’re truly someone who “thinks on his feet.”

You could add this to the list of reasons why interviews are unnatural and intimidating. Or, you could use it to your advantage. After all, once you know what the other person is looking for, you can come prepared to answer any sort of problem-solving interview question.

Here’s how to respond to the most common ones:

1. Questions About How You’ve Handled Challenges in the Past

Some people believe that past behavior is the best predictor of future behavior , so the best way to gain insight into how a person will respond to a tricky situation is to ask, “Tell me about a time when…” questions . Of course, since he wants to see your problem-solving strategies , the second half of the question will be about times things went awry (as opposed to times when you were praised for being all-around amazing).

Examples include: “Tell me about a time when you faced an unexpected challenge at work and how you handled it?” “Tell me about a time when a client or customer approached you with a concern—and how you responded?” and “Tell me about a time when you had to change your planned course of action at the last minute?”

How to Answer

The best way to answer is to follow a three-part formula: The first part is what went wrong, the second part is what you did about it, and the third part is the resolution. Since you’re highlighting your ability to handle a challenge, spend the most time discussing the reasoning behind your actions. (Oh, and pick an example where the resolution is either that you saved the day, or learned a valuable lesson so that you could save the day if it ever happens again.)

2. Questions About Tricky Situations Unique to the Position

When I was a fellowship program manager, we’d routinely ask candidates how they would handle being assigned too much (or too little) work. It didn’t make sense to phrase this as a “Tell me about a time” question, because it’s possible the applicant had never been in this situation before. But since it was quite likely in an entry-level role, we wanted to see how an applicant imagined he or she would troubleshoot the situation.

This question is often phrased as “How would you handle…” followed by a challenge specific to the responsibilities of the role you’re interviewing for. It could vary from “How would you handle an angry client?” to “How would you handle falling short of your sales goal?” to “How would you manage an employee who wasn’t doing her work?”

A great strategy to answer this type is to add detail to guide your response. So, instead of just saying that if a client was ever angry, you’d listen and try to fix it, get specific. The best responses start by repeating the question: “If the client was frustrated because we were outside of our projected timeline, I would…” or “If a client was angry because he felt the initial proposal didn’t fully meet his needs, I would...” When you frame the situation as you respond, you free yourself from having to come up with a one-size-fits-all answer (or include a ton of caveats).

3. Questions That Arise Throughout the Hiring Process

OK, these aren’t questions, per se. When the hiring manager asks if he can change around your phone interview time at the last minute, books a conference room where the AC is on the fritz, or sends you an email without an all-important attachment, it’s very likely he’s not intentionally testing your problem-solving skills. But, how you respond to snafus throughout the process makes a strong statement about your ability to handle unforeseen issues.

I cannot overstate this: Even if you answer all the questions flawlessly, it’ll count against you if you balk at an actual problem. On the bright side, even if you stumble over a question and give a less-than-graceful answer; nothing shows you can handle a technology fail like coming prepared with a back-up flash drive, or that can you segue a potentially awkward email exchange by pulling things back on topic.

Hiring managers are tasked with picking the best person for the job, and that includes testing a candidate’s problem-solving skills. Instead of seeing this as a problem, see it as an opportunity to differentiate yourself and show what kind of hire you’d be.

Why it works: If there's one thing every great techie should have, it's laser-precise attention to detail. You want a candidate who takes a proactive approach to optimizing workflows and doesn’t hang back hoping for someone else to step in and make things more efficient. 

Question #2: Have you ever had a deadline you weren't able to meet? What happened? How did you handle it?

Why it works: In a fast-paced tech environment, deadlines can get pushed back due to things beyond your candidate’s control. If they own up to this and demonstrate that they know how to stay cool under pressure, it’s a good sign they can handle the heat.

Question #3: When you’re working with a large number of clients, it’s tricky to deliver excellent service to them all. How do you go about prioritizing your clients’ needs?

Vague (or nonexistent) answers 🚩

So if they offer up a super vague answer with little to no specifics, try to ask follow-up questions to get some insight into their mentality.

But if candidates are so stressed they can’t give you a straight answer, it’s probably a sign that they don’t deal with pressure well.

Candidates who give superficial responses are more likely to choose the easy way out instead of thinking critically about the best way to handle a scenario. Run-of-the-mill answers also show a lack of creativity. Go for candidates who analyze the situation and really dig into the issue at hand to come up with a more thorough answer.

The name says it all: problem-solving interview questions are about solving the problem, not dwelling on the difficulties. So if a candidate answering a problem-solving question seems too hung up on the issue at hand rather than how they rose above and dealt with it, they might not be the culture add you’re looking for.

A problem-solving interview is only as good as the questions you ask. So if you want to identify results-oriented candidates and analytical problem-solvers, here’s how to ask the right questions .

Use hypothetical scenarios with real-world applications

Don’t waste your time on unrealistic scenarios and improbable outcomes. Ask hard-hitting questions with real-life solutions.

Illuminate the candidate’s thought process

“Tell me about your biggest weakness.” 

Oh, you mean like the time I accidentally disconnected the server and left thousands of customers without service for hours? Get real. No one's going to reveal their Kryptonite during an interview. This question generates the most canned answers imaginable ranging from “I’m a workaholic,” to “I over-deliver and exceed expectations.” 🙄

“If a song described you, what would it be.”

Avoid this and any other overly abstract question asking a candidate to describe themselves in bizarre metaphors. Be direct. Relate the questions to the position and interviewee, not some over the top hypothetical about whether someone sees themself as a shark or a unicorn.

“Tell me about your [sexual orientation, relationship status, ethnicity, race, religion, political affiliation].”

One word: creepy. Oh, and: illegal. (Okay, that's two words but you get the idea...) 

Fact is, any question that doesn't jive with the EEOC not only violates the candidate’s rights, it may also have you searching for a new career. Just don't go there.

If you’ve been invited back for a second interview, congratulations. But don’t celebrate just yet: For the next round in the interview process, prepare for the hiring team to take a deeper look at your experience and pose behavioral or situational questions to determine how you’d handle certain scenarios and whether you’re a good fit for this position.

15 Second-Round Interview Questions to Expect (With Answers)

You may be asked some of the same questions you answered in your first interview, but “during a second interview, the hiring team typically delves deeper into the candidate’s qualifications and assesses their fit for the role and the organization,” says Matthew Warzel, a certified internet recruiter and the president of the resume writing firm MJW Careers.

To ace your second interview and stand out among other candidates , be prepared to answer behavioral, company-specific and future-oriented questions.

Here are the 15 questions that are likely to come up in a second interview:

1. Behavioral Question

Example question: “Tell me about a challenging situation you faced at work and how you handled it.”

How to answer: “In my previous role as a project manager, a key team member unexpectedly resigned during a critical project phase. To address this challenge, I immediately assessed the impact on the project timeline and redistributed responsibilities among the remaining team members. Through effective communication and quick decision-making, we were able to mitigate the impact and successfully complete the project within the original deadline.”

2. Company-Specific Question

Example question: “Based on your research, what do you find most compelling about our company culture, and how do you think you would thrive within it?”

How to answer: “What stands out to me the most about your company culture is the emphasis on innovation and collaboration. I thrive in such an environment because I believe that diverse perspectives and open communication lead to creative problem-solving and growth. I know my adaptability, teamwork abilities and strong work ethic will allow me to contribute effectively to your company’s culture and drive positive results.”

3. Future-Oriented Question

Example question: “Where do you see yourself in the next five years, and how does this position align with your long-term goals?”

How to answer: “Over the next five years, I envision myself taking on increasing responsibilities and making a significant impact within the organization. I’m excited about this position because it aligns perfectly with my long-term goals. I see it as an opportunity to further develop my leadership skills, deepen my expertise in (a relevant area) and contribute to the company’s strategic goals.”

4. Technical Skills Question

Example question: “Can you describe a technical project you worked on that required a deep understanding of (specific technology or tool relevant to the role)?”

How to answer: “In my previous role as a data scientist at (company name), I was in charge of revamping our customer analytics database. I tackled slow SQL queries by redesigning the schema, optimizing queries and adding indexes. This cut our query time by 67% and made data reporting much faster.”

5. Role-Specific Question

Example question: “What experience do you have that specifically prepares you for the responsibilities of this role?”

How to answer: “When I was working as a junior UX designer at Spring Studio, I led a project to redesign the user interface for our customer portal. I collaborated with UX researchers to gather user feedback and translated that into actionable design improvements. I also spent hours using tools like Sketch and Figma to help me create wireframes and prototypes. I believe my extensive hands-on experience with user-centered design has prepared me well for this role, and I’m excited to take on similar projects here.”

6. Reflection and Improvement Question

Example question: “Can you describe a recent failure or mistake and what you learned from it?”

How to answer: “Recently, I launched a social media campaign for my company that resulted in a lower engagement than what we were hoping for. From this experience, I learned the importance of understanding not just who our target audience is but also how they interact with content across different social media platforms. Now when creating content, I dive deeper into audience insights and look at some additional metrics and competitor analysis to make sure it resonates.”

7. Ethical Dilemma Question

Example question: “Have you ever faced an ethical dilemma at work? How did you handle it?”

How to answer: “Yes, I faced an ethical dilemma in my previous role as a marketing specialist at August Co. I was asked to push a marketing strategy that I knew wasn’t entirely transparent about product limitations. I scheduled a one-on-one meeting with my manager and suggested a more straightforward approach that aligned with our values. It was not an easy conversation, and I was pretty nervous about how it could affect my role at the company. But ultimately, we went with a more forthright strategy, and it paid off by building stronger trust with our customers.”

8. Leadership Question

Example question: “Can you provide an example of a time when you led a team through a challenging project? What was your approach?”

How to answer: “In my previous role as a marketing manager, I led my team through a challenging marketing campaign where we had to pivot strategies halfway through due to unexpected market changes. To manage this, I broke the project into smaller tasks and kept everyone in the loop with daily stand-up meetings. We brainstormed new ideas together and quickly adapted our plan. We eventually managed to turn things around and delivered a campaign that exceeded our goals.”

9. Conflict Resolution Question

Example question: “Tell me about a time when you had to resolve a conflict between team members.”

How to answer: “As a senior software engineering manager, I once had to resolve a conflict between two team members who had different views on a project’s direction. I scheduled a Zoom meeting with both of them to discuss this issue. During the meeting, I gave each person a chance to explain their perspective and listen to the other’s point of view. I then guided the conversation toward finding a middle ground. By fostering a constructive dialogue between the two, we were able to resolve the conflict and come up with a revised plan that everyone was on board with.”

10. Adaptability Question

Example question: “Can you give an example of how you adapted to a major change or new process at work?”

How to answer: “During my time as a project manager at Orange Inc., our team transitioned from a traditional project management system to a new Agile framework. To quickly adapt to this change, I took the initiative to learn the fundamentals of Agile through online courses and workshops. I then organized a series of team training sessions to help everyone on my team get up to speed. Because of our adaptability as a team, we smoothly integrated Agile into our workflow with minimal disruption and saw a big improvement in our project delivery.”

11. The “Difficult Customer” Question

Example question: “Describe a time when you dealt with a particularly difficult customer. How did you handle the situation?”

How to answer: “As a customer representative for a life insurance company, I once received a long email from a frustrated customer who was upset about the terms of her policy. I took immediate action by giving her a call to understand her concerns in detail. I empathized with her frustration and then explained the options available and how she could adjust her coverage to better meet her needs. Because I stayed calm and focused on helping her solve the issue, she ended the call by thanking me and leaving a positive review on our company’s online profile page.”

12. Innovation Question

Example question: “Can you share an example of how you contributed to a project or process improvement through innovation?”

How to answer: “In my last role, I noticed that our company’s customer feedback collection was inefficient and inconsistent. I took the initiative to change that by implementing an automated survey system that integrated with our customer relationship management, or CRM. I managed the entire process, from selecting the tool and configuring it to training the team. This innovation streamlined our data collection process and helped us address customer concerns much quicker than before.”

13. Learning and Development Question

Example question: “What new skills have you gained recently, and how do you plan to apply them in this role?”

How to answer: “I recently completed a certification in data analytics, which included advanced training in tools like Python and SQL for data manipulation and visualization. I believe this new skill set will come in handy in this business analyst role since it’ll help me dig deeper into data, spot trends more easily and provide valuable insight to improve business processes.”

14. Team Dynamics Question

Example question: “How do you approach working with a diverse team with varying perspectives and work styles?”

How to answer: “I love working with diverse teams because it brings so many different perspectives to the table. I always make it a point to listen to everyone’s ideas and adapt my approach to fit different work styles. For example, in a recent project, we had team members with different communication preferences — some preferred meetings and emails, while others preferred short Slack messages. To accommodate everyone, I set up a system where we used a mix of communication methods and scheduled regular team syncs to keep everyone informed and engaged.”

15. Motivation Question

Example question: “What motivates you to do your best work, and how do you stay engaged in your role?”

How to answer: “What motivates me the most is seeing how my work contributes to the team’s success and the overall impact we make. I love tackling challenges and solving problems, which keeps me excited about what I do. To stay engaged in my role, I like to set small goals and celebrate those wins, no matter how small. I also make it a point to connect with my manager and mentors regularly to share progress and get feedback.”

What Do Employers Want to Know in the Second Interview?

In the second round of interviews, employers will ask more in-depth questions to better get to know each candidate and narrow their options. But what exactly do they want to know?

According to executive coach Mary Lee Gannon, here are some questions hiring managers are looking to answer in the second round of interviews:

— Will this person be able to do the job without much help?

— Will they fit into the culture or will they make me look bad?

— Can I trust this person?

— Can I rely on this person?

— Will they exceed expectations?

— Are they collaborative?

If your potential employer can confidently answer yes to all these questions, you’re on your way to landing the job. “The second interview means the company is interested and is now comparing you to a select pool of candidates,” Gannon says. Bring your A-game to secure a spot in the third or final round of interviews.

Preparing for Second Interview Questions

A second interview means you’re seriously being considered for the position, and the questions will be more probing. Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your second interview and impress the hiring team.

Research Your Interviewers

The second round of interviews is where the vetting process gets more serious, which means you could meet with “key decision-makers and those higher up the management ladder,” says career and leadership coach Ayanna E. Jackson.

In the invitation email for the second interview, the recruiting coordinator should let you know what to expect and with whom you’ll meet. Before the big day, Jackson suggests searching for these decision-makers on LinkedIn and reading through their career bios to help you ask better questions and demonstrate your interest.

Research the Company

Jackson notes a trend among job applicants: They get so caught up in presenting themselves as the strongest candidate that they fail to research the company they’re interviewing with, she says.

“Your second interview will focus on the specifics of the role in that department or division and how it impacts their needs and bottom line,” Jackson says. “A key miss is not knowing their industry, competitors, newest products or press coverage. This is where social media — and not just their static website — comes in useful for you to scroll through.”

Prepare Your STAR Stories

STAR stands for situation, task, action and result. The STAR method is an interview technique designed to help candidates prepare for behavioral questions by structuring their responses logically and concisely. Here’s how:

— Situation. Describe the event or situation you were in.

— Task. Explain the tasks you were required to achieve.

— Action. Describe the steps you took to complete the tasks.

— Result. Specify what you achieved in the process.

“There’s no need to prepare 30 different STAR examples to draw from in your second interview,” says Andi Cook, a job search strategist and career coach. Instead, five well-crafted STAR stories should suffice since they could be applied to various questions.

Second Interview Do’s and Don’ts

Here’s what you should — and should not — do when you’re called back for a second interview with a potential employer.

Do’s:

— Do prepare questions. Job interviews are a chance for interviewers to get to know you and vice versa. Before going into your second interview, prepare a list of questions to ask the hiring manager to ensure the company is the right fit for you.

— Do send a thank-you note after the interview. Just like after the first round of interviews, take the time to send everyone you met in the second interview a thank-you email . Doing so will reiterate your interest in the company and the position.

— Do expect to discuss salary. If you didn’t discuss salary expectations with the hiring manager during the first round of interviews, expect this topic to come up in the second round. It’s a good strategy to defer salary negotiations until a figure or range is offered and avoid giving an answer if the employer won’t share their budget.

Don’ts:

— Don’t slack off with your interview attire. Dress to impress in every stage of the interview process. Since business formal is typically the standard for interviews, dress accordingly.

— Don’t celebrate too early. Making it to the second round of interviews doesn’t mean you’ve secured the job. Keep your expectations in check, stay humble and focus on setting yourself apart from other candidates.

— Don’t repeat everything you said in the first interview. The second interview is your chance to go deeper describing your experience and fit for the position. Make sure to go beyond the previous interview, providing specific examples and answering questions in detail.
