Elapsed time is the amount of time that passes between the beginning and the end of an event. The concept of elapsed time fits nicely in the elementary school curriculum. Beginning in third grade, students should be able to tell and write time to the nearest minute and solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of time. • Dad says dinner will be ready in 35 minutes. It’s 5:30 p.m. now. What time will dinner be ready?
• Becky is meeting her friend at the library at 12:45 p.m. It takes her 25 minutes to get to the library. What time will she need to leave her house to arrive on time?

Daily Schedule

Let your children keep track of their schedule and ask them to figure the elapsed time for each activity. For example, how long did your child spend eating breakfast, reading, taking a bath, or playing video games?

How Long Will It Take?

Give your kids practice with elapsed time by encouraging them to figure out how long daily activities take. For example, the next time you order a pizza online or by phone, you'll probably be given an estimated delivery time. Use that information to create a word problem that's relevant to your child's life, such as, "It's 5:40 p.m. now and the pizza shop says the pizza will be here at 6:20 p.m. How long will it take for the pizza to arrive?"

Order a set of time dice from online retailers or teacher supply stores. The set contains two twelve-sided dice, one with numbers representing the hours and the other with numbers representing minutes. Take turns rolling the time dice with your child. Each player should roll twice, then calculate the elapsed time between the two resulting dice times. (A pencil and paper will come in handy, as you'll want to jot down the time of the first roll.)

What is ‘Elapsed Time’ ?

The elapsed time of an event is the time that passes between the commencement and the ending of the event. In simple words, it tells us the amount of time for which the event goes on. We use the concept of elapsed time to understand the durations of various events that occur around us.

How do we solve Problems related to Elapsed Time ?

We can easily calculate the elapsed time of events using a simple formula. To find the elapsed time of an event, we need to subtract the start time from the end time of the event. 

Elapsed time = End time – Start time

The difference between the start time and the end time tells us the duration for which the event progresses. In some cases, we might know the elapsed time and the start time of the event. We can rearrange this formula and use it to find the end time from the given data. 

Similarly we can use this formula to find the start time if the end time and elapsed time are known.

Example 1: A theater started a show at 8:30 PM, and the show ended at 10:30 PM. If there was a 10-minute intermission, find the elapsed time of the show. 

To find the elapsed time of the show, we need to subtract the start time from the end time. 

Elapsed time = 10:30 PM – 8:30 PM

Elapsed time = 2 hours

But there was a 10-minute intermission in between the show. 

Hence, actual elapsed time = 2 hours – 10 minutes

Actual elapsed time = 1 hour 50 minutes

Therefore the elapsed time of the show was 1 hour 50 minutes.

Example 2: Ellie is about to take a test that has a duration of 90 minutes. If she is supposed to start the test at 11:15 AM, find the time at which she is expected to finish the test.

Duration of the test = 90 minutes

To find the time at which Ellie is supposed to conclude the test, we need to convert the test duration into hours. 

Duration of test in hours = 1 hour 30 minutes. 

We know that the test starts at 11:15 AM. 

The time at which the test ends = start time + test duration

                                                   = 11:15 + 1 hour 30 minutes

                                                    = 11:15 + 1:30

                                                    = 12:45

Hence, Ellie is supposed to finish the test at 12:45 PM.

Example 3: Joel traveled from Denver to Albuquerque by road. He starts the journey from Denver at 6:00 AM and arrives in Albuquerque at 1:30 PM. Calculate the elapsed time of his journey. 

Start time of the journey: 6:00 AM

End time of the journey: 1:30 PM

To find the elapsed time, we need to subtract the start time from the end time.

We will convert the start time and end time into the 24-hour format to make calculations easier. 

Start time of the journey: 6:00

End time of the journey: 13:30

Elapsed time = 13:30 – 6:00

∴ Elapsed time = 7:30 or 7 hours and 30 minutes

So, Joel took 7 hours and 30 minutes to complete the journey between Denver and Albuquerque.

How to Calculate Elapsed Time

• Calculating the elapsed time means to find the difference between two times.
• To calculate the elapsed time, it is easiest to count up in hours.
• First find the number of minutes from the earliest time to the next hour by subtracting the number of minutes in the earliest time from 60.
• Count up in hours until the hour before the final time.
• Then read the number of minutes from this hour until the final time.
• Here, there are 40 minutes until 09:00, 1 hour until 10:00 and then 15 minutes from 10:00 until 10:15.
• Adding the minutes, we have 1 hour 55 minutes.

• The start and end times are labelled on the end of a time line.
• Between 11:45 and 15:11 are the hours of 12:00, 13:00, 14:00 and 15:00, which are marked on the time line.
• We subtract the 45 minutes of 11:45 from 60 minutes to get 15 minutes. There are 15 minutes from 11:45 to 12:00.
• Between 12:00 and 15:00 there are 3 hours.
• From 15:00 to 15:11 there are 11 minutes.
• We add the minutes together. 15 + 11 = 26 minutes in total.
• The elapsed time is 3 hours 26 minutes.

Whenever we have to figure out how long an activity or event takes to complete, we are talking about the time elapsed between the start and end of the event. Let’s explore the meaning of elapsed time and more. Let’s dive in right away!

Elapse is a verb of time that means “pass,” and time, on the other hand, is a measurable duration in which an event occurs. So, the time taken by an event to occur between the start of the time and the end of the time is called elapsed time. In simple terms, it is the difference between the two given times.

Some examples of how we use time elapsed in our daily lives: 

• The time taken to cook a recipe.
• The duration of a movie.
• The duration of a car journey.

The duration of time elapsed between an event means the difference between the two given times. Before we talk about the duration of time, remember there are two formats to write the time:

• 12-hour format where we apply the suffixes a.m. and p.m. to the time. 
• 24-hour format where the time runs from 00:00 (midnight) to 23:59. 

Let’s understand the different methods to calculate and solve elapsed time problems.

Elapsed Time on the Number Line

To calculate the duration of an event, it is easy to count up the hours using a number line. We can carry out the following steps to solve a time-elapsed problem on a number line.

• Divide the number line into equal intervals of time.
• Mark the starting time and the end time on the number line.
• Draw an arrow to the nearest hour, and calculate the minutes to the nearest hour.
• Count hours until you reach the hour before the final or end time. Then the minute from this hour to the final time.
• Add up all the time to find the final answer. 

Let’s understand more about this by solving a problem.

Example: What is the amount of time elapsed between 11:45 and 15:10?

Divide the number into equal time intervals and mark the starting and end time on it. We subtract the 45 minutes from 60 minutes to calculate the duration between 11:45 and the nearest hour, which is 12:00. There are 15 minutes. 

Between 12:00 and 15:00, there are 3 hours in all. And from 15:00 to 15:10, there are 10 minutes.

Add up the minutes and hours to find the total time elapsed. The amount of time elapsed is 3 hours and 25 minutes. This method is best when dealing with time in a 12-hour format.

Subtracting Times

As we covered earlier, the time elapsed between an activity means the difference between the two given times. So, we can calculate the duration of an activity or event by determining the difference between the start and end times.

Elapsed Time $=$ Final Time $–$ Starting Time

If an event’s start and end times are in 12-hour format, we can convert them to 24-hour clock format and carry out the following steps.

The steps to calculate the time elapsed are as follows:

Step I: Compare the minute of both times.

Case 1: If the minutes of the “end time” is less than the minutes of the “start time,” then in the “end time.”

• Take one hour away. 
• Add 60 to the minutes of the first time.

Case 2: If the minutes of the “end time” is more than the minutes of the “start time,” jump to the second step directly. 

Step II: Subtract the minutes of both times.

Step III: Subtract the hours of both times.

Hence, the answer is the result of Steps II and III together. 

For example, calculate the duration between 6:20 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

9:00 – 7:10. Here, we will use regrouping. 

Step I: Here, the minutes of the first (end) time is less than the minutes of the second (start) time. So, we borrow 1 hour and add 60 to the minutes.

Step II: Subtract the minutes: 60 $–$ 20 $=$ 40

This skill has a ton of application in the real world. Understanding the duration of time is critical in many medical aspects of recovery and therapy. Doctors often build a recovery timeline for their patients. If you were every injured or have been really sick, you would know this for instance. I played high school and college softball. I had the toughest position in terms of stress on the knee. I was a catcher. On the typical day, I would crouch over a thousand times. Having a career that spanned well over fifteen years, physicians estimate that I crouched well over a million times. As a result, I had to have my right knee replaced through surgery. After surgery I had a two-day hospital stay. My physician gave me a recovery timeline that indicated what activities I should be able to do at each stage. It was based on days. I was told to stay immobile for ten days, followed by ten days of light walking, every ten to twelve days I was able to do a little more. Guess how I calculate what day my level activity expanded? You guessed it. I also had eight weeks of physical therapy. I would perform strengthening exercises and have therapy performed on my knee. Each exercise or therapy session was based on ten to fifteen-minute increments. Every time I attended a session, it was an elapsed time word problem to determine when my session was complete, and I could head home or call form a ride.

Elapsed time is the time taken by an event to occur between the start of the time and the end of the time. In simple words, we can say that the amount of time that has passed between the beginning and the end of an event is called the elapsed time. We can determine this time by subtracting the end time and the start time. The formula to calculate the elapsed time is simply to subtract the hours and minutes separately. It gives the duration of an event.

Further in this article, we will explore the concept of elapsed time, its meaning, and its formula. We will also learn to calculate elapsed time on a number line and the meaning of the estimated elapsed time. We shall solve a few examples based on the topic to understand its applications and the concept in a better way.

What is Elapsed Time?

Let us first recall the meaning of the terms time and elapse separately. Elapse is a verb of time that means 'pass or go by' and time is a measurable period or duration in which an event occurs. So, elapsed time is a concept of time that describes the time that has passed from the start of an event till the end of an event. Elapsed time gives the period or the duration of an event to occur. Let us go through some of the basic examples of elapsed time in our daily lives below to understand its meaning:

• The time taken by a boy to finish a race.
• The time taken to cook a recipe.
• The duration of a journey covered in a car.
• The time taken by a school bus from start till the reaching the school.

Elapsed Time Meaning

Elapsed time means the time that has elapsed between the start of the time and the end of the time. For example, if a man starts traveling at 10:30 AM and ends the journey at 12:15 PM, the time elapsed is the duration of his journey, that is, the time between 12:15 PM and 10:30 AM. Elapsed time is an important concept as it helps us to learn to read the time on a clock and measure the time taken for an event to occur. Let us now understand the formula to calculate the elapsed time in the next section.

Elapsed Time Formula

We can calculate the elapsed time by subtracting the time at the end of the event and the time at the beginning of the event. We subtract the hours and the minutes separately. We can write time in two formats, one is the 12-hour format where we use AM and PM , and another is the 24-hour format where the time is given in hours and minutes. For example, if an event starts at 16:40 and ends at 23:50, then the elapsed time can be determined as,

Hours = 23 - 16 = 7, Minutes = 50 - 40 = 10. So, the elapsed time is 7 hours 10 minutes. Here the time was given in the 24-hour format.

We can simplify the problems by breaking the time into 1-hour gaps and then calculating. We will solve a few examples in the upcoming sections to understand this better. So, the formula to calculate the elapsed time is given by,

Elapsed Time = End Time - Start Time

Elapsed Time on a Number Line

In this section, we will learn to calculate the elapsed time on a number line . To do so, we divide the number line into equal intervals of time and then jump from the start time to the end time to calculate the elapsed time. Let us consider an example to understand this method better. A man goes on a vacation in his car. He starts driving the car at 1:30 PM and reached the destination at 6:10 PM. We need to find the elapsed time of the journey. Let us draw a number line and mark the time at 1-hour intervals and then in the last hour, we divide it into 10 minutes intervals.

Estimated Elapsed Time

The estimated elapsed time is an estimation of the time that is required for an event to occur. In simple words, we can say that it is the time that will be required for an event (that has not occurred yet) to be completed. Estimated elapsed time is generally used for flight durations. Before the take-off of a flight, the passengers are told that the flight will land in x hours and y minutes. Since we cannot be sure of the exact duration as the event has not occurred yet, we consider it as the estimated elapsed time which is estimated according to past experiences.

Calculating Elapsed Time

Now that we have understood the meaning of the elapsed time and its formula, let us solve a few examples to understand how to calculate the elapsed time when the times are given in different formats. To easily calculate the elapsed time, we add the hours first and then add the minutes in the last interval.

Example 1: Calculate the elapsed time between 3:10 PM and 6:05 PM.

Solution: To calculate the elapsed time, we will first divide the time into 1-hour intervals and then calculate the minutes in the last hour.

3:10 PM to 4:10 PM = 1 hour

4:10 PM to 5:10 PM = 1 hour

5:10 PM to 6:05 PM = 55 minutes

So, the elapsed time is 1 hour + 1 hour + 55 minutes = 2 hours 55 minutes

Answer: Elapsed time = 2 hours 55 minutes

Example 2: James baked a cake in 45 minutes and it was done at 4:50 PM. When did he start baking the cake?

Solution: In this problem, we need to find the time when James started baking the cake. We have end time = 4:50 PM and elapsed time = 45 minutes. Using the elapsed time formula, we have

45 minutes = 4:50 PM - Start Time

Start time = 4:50 PM - 45 minutes

Answer: James started baking the cake at 4:05 PM

17:54 to 18:54 = 1 hour

18:54 to 19:54 = 1 hour

19:54 to 20:54 = 1 hour

20:54 to 21:54 = 1 hour

21:54 to 22:54 = 1 hour

22:54 to 23:40 = 46 minutes

So, the elapsed time = 1 hour + 1 hour + 1 hour + 1 hour + 1 hour + 46 minutes

Example 3: How long is it between 10:20 AM and 1:10 PM?

Solution: To find the elapsed time, we will subtract the two times,

= 1:10 PM - 10:20 AM

= (11:20 AM - 10:20 AM) + (12:20 PM - 11:20 AM) + (1:10 PM - 12:20 PM)

= 1 hour + 1 hour + 50 min

= 2 hours 50 min

If you have students working towards understanding elapsed time word problems there are a few strategies you can keep in mind to make the process easier!

All Elapsed Time Word Problems Are Not Created Equally!

When diving into elapsed time word problems, not all problems are the same level of difficulty. An elapsed time problem including hours only is going to be much more simple for your students to solve than a problem to the nearest minute. Use this to your advantage!

Start with simple problems to the nearest hour: Andy woke up at 7:00 am. He spends 2 hours getting ready and then leaves the house. What time did Andy leave the house?

Your students can use this type of problem to get used to using an open number line to solve. When they are presented with a more difficult problem in the future, your students won’t need to problem-solve around the conventions of the problem type but can instead spend their time focusing on the most efficient way to solve the problem.

When your students are confidently using a number line to solve elapsed time word problems involving hours you can then move to problems to the minute: Andy woke up at 7:08 and was ready for school by 7:52. How long did it take Andy to get ready?

Think CRA When Calculating Elapsed Time

When we talk about “thinking CRA” we are considering how a concept can be taught or understood at the c oncrete, r epresentational and a bstract levels.

Elapsed time word problems themselves are at the abstract level. There is no hands-on or visual support for your students. Your students need to be thinking and understanding at an abstract level to solve.

Taking a step backward, you can introduce the tool of an open number line as a helpful representational model for your students. Recording the start and end times as well as the “jumps” along the number line can help to make the concept of elapsed time more visual for your students.

Taking another step backward we can make elapsed time concrete for students by working alongside a model clock. Move the hands on the clock and record (or ask your students to record) those same movements on an open number line. This will help your students to make the connection between time and the visual model.

Try Numberless Word Problems

Numberless word problems are a tool that can help students to focus on the action of a word problem. While an elapsed time word problem may have a missing start time, missing end time or missing elapsed time using a numberless word problem can help your students to follow the action and solve for the unknown.

Let’s try one together!

Start with the context alone: Coco is baking cookies! Her cookies need to bake for a specific amount of time. She puts them into the oven at __:____.

Ask your students what they notice about the story. Who is in the story? What is happening? What do we know about the story? What are we wondering?

Next, introduce your first bit of information: Coco is baking cookies! Her cookies need to bake for a specific amount of time. She puts them into the oven at 2:10.

Ask your students again; What is happening in the story? What new information did we learn? What are we still wondering? How long *might* the cookies go into the oven for? What is a reasonable guess?

Introduce your second bit of information next: Coco is baking cookies! Her cookies need to bake for exactly 13 minutes. She puts them into the oven at 2:10.

Ask your students what new pieces of information they learned in the story. What questions could we ask (or answer!) about this story? Do the cookies bake for a longer or shorter period of time than you anticipated?

Last, present the entire word problem. Coco is baking cookies! Her cookies need to bake for exactly 13 minutes. She puts them into the oven at 2:10. What time should Coco take the cookies out of the oven?

At this point, your students can solve the problem- but don’t stop there! After solving, ask your students if their answer is reasonable and if it matches the story.

• Offer hands-on and visual supports alongside abstract elapsed time word problems.

Sometimes we want to find out the duration of an activity. We can calculate the duration or time elapsed if we know the starting and finishing time. For example, if the bus starts at 9:00 a.m. and reaches the school at 9:30 a.m. the time taken by the bus to reach school is 09:00 – 09:30 which is equal to 30 minutes. So, the school bus takes 30 minutes to reach the school.

Let us consider some more examples involving calculation of duration of an activity.

1. Find the elapsed time from 8:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Time difference from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon = 4 hours

Time difference from 12:00 noon to 7:30 p.m. = 7 hours 30 minutes

Total time elapsed = 11 hours 30 minutes.

2. Find the elapsed time from 1350 hours to 2200 hours.

Hearing you: emotion-savvy chatbot detects telco's customer woes for better problem solving, leveraging technology to save time and resources, myrepublic's strategy for exceptional customer service begins with asking, 'how do we make life easier for our customers'.

One question is always on the mind of Mr Wayne Johnson: “How do we make life easier for our customers?”

He is the head of customer service and customer experience at MyRepublic. While there are no straight answers to the question, his team of six is constantly trying to find innovative ways to create a seamless experience and meet the needs of their customers.

MyRepublic’s in-app artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot was rolled out in March this year as a result. This chatbot stands out with its ability to pick up emotions.

“The chatbot looks for language that sounds like frustration, and flags that out to our customer service team,” adds Mr Johnson. Such customers may then be prioritised for customer agents to assist them.

To give it an even stronger human touch, MyRepublic’s AI chatbot is able to simulate a natural conversation with customers, unlike typical chatbots that only identify keywords to offer solutions or provide templated responses. It then searches through the company’s database to find a solution.

These key features of the AI chatbot were created based on customer feedback. By sharing their feedback and frustrations through surveys, it helped the customer service and customer experience team at MyRepublic to identify areas for improvement and work on solutions to keep their customers satisfied.

“If we are not listening to the feedback from our customers and where their frustration points are, we will never improve,” says Mr Johnson. It was this shared dedication to make the customers’ lives easier that paved the way for delivering better customer service for the company.

Empowering customer self-service

User feedback led MyRepublic to revamp its app in late 2022, removing the “slow” and “clunky” elements for a “cleaner and cooler” look, says Mr Johnson.

The company also created over 2,500 automated tasks to give them the power to resolve their own issues.

A few years back, if a customer had a problem with the home broadband and had to turn to the helpline for assistance, this could have meant getting put on hold for 30 minutes before an agent is available to take the call. Today, thanks to the AI chatbot, the matter can get resolved in an average of 30 seconds through the MyRepublic app.

Once an issue is flagged to the AI chatbot, it goes through the customer’s account to detect abnormalities and guides the customer towards rectifying the issue. This saves time and eliminates any potential frustration of having to wait on the line.

While people typically dislike automated responses, the in-app AI chatbot rolled out by MyRepublic has been well-received by customers so far. 

As of July 2024, 82 per cent of general inquiries have been resolved satisfactorily by its AI chatbot, including those related to billing and transactions.

The more complex cases were handed over to customer service agents. But even then, the work of MyRepublic’s AI chatbot is not done – it is still running in the background, tracking the conversation between the agent and the customer, and giving the agent suggestions on how to deal with the inquiry or issue by combing through its internal database.

“What is important to us is finding that right mix of when a customer needs to speak to an agent and when they can self-help,” shares Mr Johnson. This goes back to his main goal of making the lives of the customers easier.

To meet these needs, MyRepublic’s AI chatbot is continuously being improved by real-life use and reviewed by the customer service and experience team. This investment in customer experience is one of the reasons MyRepublic was recognised in the Singapore’s Best Customer Service 2024/2025 list, as surveyed by Statista and The Straits Times .

Going the extra mile

Despite Mr Johnson’s belief that AI will lead the way to better customer services, he believes that ultimately, it is the human touch that will truly make an impact.

He gave the example of one MyRepublic customer who found himself in a pickle when he was overseas with a faulty SIM card. He could not even do simple tasks like sending out WhatsApp messages. A replacement SIM card could not be sent to him as they are mailed only to local addresses.

However, this customer was surprised when a staff member travelling to the customer’s location hand-delivered a new SIM card to him.

“The customer was so happy that he reached out to the MyRepublic legal team to sing the praises of the staff member,” says Mr Johnson. 

“Although it bypasses our day-to-day processes, we are happy to go the extra mile for the sake of keeping the customer satisfied.”

Seeing the positive reviews and happy faces of customers motivates Mr Johnson to work towards even bigger changes for the company. New projects in the pipeline include having the AI bot identify an issue even before the customer is aware of it and solve it in the backend. Another potential development would be avatar-driven interactions: AI bots with human-sounding voices that can converse with customers in a phone call. 

“The goal for us is that as long as every change is making it easier for the customer, then we are doing the right thing,” he adds.

About four months after a notorious hacking group claimed to have stolen an extraordinary amount of sensitive personal information from a major data broker, a member of the group has reportedly released most of it for free on an online marketplace for stolen personal data.

The breach, which includes Social Security numbers and other sensitive data, could power a raft of identity theft, fraud and other crimes, said Teresa Murray, consumer watchdog director for the U.S. Public Interest Research Group.

According to a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the hacking group USDoD claimed in April to have stolen personal records of 2.9 billion people from National Public Data, which offers personal information to employers, private investigators, staffing agencies and others doing background checks. The group offered in a forum for hackers to sell the data, which included records from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, for $3.5 million , a cybersecurity expert said in a post on X.

The lawsuit was reported by Bloomberg Law .

Last week, a purported member of USDoD identified only as Felice told the hacking forum that they were offering “ the full NPD database ,” according to a screenshot taken by BleepingComputer. The information consists of about 2.7 billion records, each of which includes a person’s full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number and phone number, along with alternate names and birth dates, Felice claimed.

National Public Data didn’t respond to a request for comment, nor has it formally notified people about the alleged breach. It has, however, been telling people who contacted it via email that “we are aware of certain third-party claims about consumer data and are investigating these issues.”

In that email, the company also said that it had “purged the entire database, as a whole, of any and all entries, essentially opting everyone out.” As a result, it said, it has deleted any “non-public personal information” about people, although it added, “We may be required to retain certain records to comply with legal obligations.”

Several news outlets that focus on cybersecurity have looked at portions of the data Felice offered and said they appear to be real people’s actual information. If the leaked material is what it’s claimed to be, here are some of the risks posed and the steps you can take to protect yourself.

The threat of ID theft

The leak purports to provide much of the information that banks, insurance companies and service providers seek when creating accounts — and when granting a request to change the password on an existing account.

A few key pieces appeared to be missing from the hackers’ haul. One is email addresses, which many people use to log on to services. Another is driver’s license or passport photos, which some governmental agencies rely on to verify identities.

Still, Murray of PIRG said that bad actors could do “all kinds of things” with the leaked information, the most worrisome probably being to try to take over someone’s accounts — including those associated with their bank, investments, insurance policies and email. With your name, Social Security number, date of birth and mailing address, a fraudster could create fake accounts in your name or try to talk someone into resetting the password on one of your existing accounts.

“For somebody who’s really suave at it,” Murray said, “the possibilities are really endless.”

It’s also possible that criminals could use information from previous data breaches to add email addresses to the data from the reported National Public Data leak. Armed with all that, Murray said, “you can cause all kinds of chaos, commit all kinds of crimes, steal all kinds of money.”

And there are a lot of people capable of finding it; VPNRanks, a website that rates virtual private network services, estimates that 5 million people a day will access the dark web through the anonymizing TOR browser, although only a portion of them will be up to no good.

If you suspect that your Social Security number or other important identifying information about you has been leaked, experts say you should put a freeze on your credit files at the three major credit bureaus, Experian , Equifax and TransUnion . You can do so for free, and it will prevent criminals from taking out loans, signing up for credit cards and opening financial accounts under your name. The catch is that you’ll need to remember to lift the freeze temporarily if you are obtaining or applying for something that requires a credit check.

Placing a freeze can be done online or by phone, working with each credit bureau individually. PIRG cautions never to do so in response to an unsolicited email or text purporting to be from one of the credit agencies — such a message is probably the work of a scammer trying to dupe you into revealing sensitive personal information.

You can also sign up for a service that monitors your accounts and the dark web to guard against identity theft, typically for a fee. If your data is exposed in a breach, the company whose network was breached will often provide one of these services for free for a year or more.

If you want to know whether you have something to worry about, multiple websites and service providers such as Google and Experian can scan the dark web for your information to see whether it’s out there. But those aren’t specific to the reported National Public Data breach. For that information, try a free tool from the cybersecurity company Pentester that offers to search for your information in the breached National Public Data files . Along with the search results, Pentester displays links to the sites where you can freeze your credit reports.

Atlas Privacy, a company that helps people remove their personal information from data brokers, also offers a way to check whether your info was breached in the National Public Data hack.

As important as these steps are to stop people from opening new accounts in your name, they aren’t much help protecting your existing accounts. Oddly enough, those accounts are especially vulnerable to identity thieves if you haven’t signed up for online access to them, Murray said — that’s because it’s easier for thieves to create a login and password while pretending to be you than it is for them to crack your existing login and password.

Of course, having strong passwords that are different for every service and changed periodically helps. Password manager apps offer a simple way to create and keep track of passwords by storing them in the cloud, essentially requiring you to remember one master password instead of dozens of long and unpronounceable ones. These are available both for free (such as Apple’s iCloud Keychain) and for a fee .

Beyond that, experts say it’s extremely important to sign up for two-factor authentication. That adds another layer of security on top of your login and password. The second factor is usually something sent or linked to your phone, such as a text message; a more secure approach is to use an authenticator app, which will keep you secure even if your phone number is hijacked by scammers .

Yes, scammers can hijack your phone number through techniques called SIM swaps and port-out fraud , causing more identity-theft nightmares. To protect you on that front, AT&T allows you to create a passcode restricting access to your account; T-Mobile offers optional protection against your phone number being switched to a new device, and Verizon automatically blocks SIM swaps by shutting down both the new device and the existing one until the account holder weighs in with the existing device.

Your worst enemy may be you

As much or more than hacked data, scammers also rely on people to reveal sensitive information about themselves. One common tactic is to pose as your bank, employer, phone company or other service provider with whom you’ve done business and then try to hook you with a text or email message.

Banks, for example, routinely tell customers that they will not ask for their account information by phone. Nevertheless, scammers have coaxed victims into providing their account numbers, logins and passwords by posing as bank security officers trying to stop an unauthorized withdrawal or some other supposedly urgent threat.

People may even get an official-looking email purportedly from National Public Data, offering to help them deal with the reported leak, Murray said. “It’s not going to be NPD trying to help. It’s going to be some bad guy overseas” trying to con them out of sensitive information, she said.

It’s a good rule of thumb never to click on a link or call a phone number in an unsolicited text or email. If the message warns about fraud on your account and you don’t want to simply ignore it, look up the phone number for that company’s fraud department (it’s on the back of your debit and credit cards) and call for guidance.

“These bad guys, this is what they do for a living,” Murray said. They might send out tens of thousands of queries and get only one response, but that response could net them $10,000 from an unwitting victim. “Ten thousand dollars in one day for having one hit with one victim, that’s a pretty good return on investment,” she said. “That’s what motivates them.”
