PayPal finds itself in a pantheon of pandemic-proof tech companies that have seen a “tremendous surge” in demand because of COVID-19,  according to CEO Daniel Schulman. As consumers pivot towards more online purchases, they’ve relied heavily on online payment providers like PayPal.

The Palo Alto-based company recently added a QR code feature in response to COVID-19, which enables sellers to receive contactless payments without needing to purchase dedicated equipment. The company also announced a hiring surge in March.

In 2019, PayPal ranked #5 on Forbes’ list of the 250 best regarded companies, which rates how firms do as employers as well as their trustworthiness, product quality, and social conduct. PayPal has over 23,200 employees in 50+ global offices. The company does not disclose its acceptance rate for job applicants, unlike Goldman Sachs and Apple.

We'll break down the following in this article:

  • The interview process

The Interview Process at PayPal

paypal problem solving interview questions

How long is the interview process?

The hiring process at PayPal is unusually swift for a tech company. A combined 51% of respondents  on Indeed said the process took between two days to one week, while just 11% reported waiting over a month.

According to the same data, the interview experience is favorable overall. Interview reviews claim the process is moderately difficult, and very few interviewees reported negative experiences.

Phone screen with a recruiter

The initial phone interview assumes a typical format, but be prepared to do most of the talking. While the recruiter will provide a rundown of the role and requirements, PayPal wants to know your story and where you see your career going.

Discuss your current work, past experiences, and what you seek in your next role. You may find it helpful to prepare a two-minute elevator pitch summing up your past, present, and future career trajectory. If the recruiter thinks you’re a good fit, they’ll recommend you to the hiring manager.

Technical phone screen with a hiring manager or team member

The second phone screen focuses more on the candidate’s expertise. You’ll likely be quizzed on your technical knowledge: if you’re interviewing for an engineering role, be prepared to answer questions that test your familiarity with data structures and algorithms.

PayPal refrains from brain teaser-type questions and doesn’t play ‘gotcha’ games.

If you get stuck working on a Java problem, the interviewer will work through it with you -- just be sure to talk through your thought processes and ask clarifying questions about constraints and parameters.

Employees report that the technical phone screen questions tend to be quite standard. What’s more important is talking through tangible examples of what you’ve accomplished and establishing your unique area of expertise. Discuss your current or past work with an emphasis on process and results -- or, if you’re a student, discuss a passion project or capstone project.

Onsite interview (up to five rounds)

paypal problem solving interview questions

PayPal extended work-from-home options for employees at the start of the pandemic, so onsite interviews are presumably being held remotely. Candidates who are invited to an onsite have already been deemed technically qualified, so the company is looking for culture fit. However, you should still expect to answer technical questions as well as behavioral ones.

Candidates for technical roles typically undergo the following:

  • A two-hour session consisting of two coding questions
  • At least two technical interviews -- one a quiz-style interview consisting of questions about data structures and algorithms; the other a whiteboard exercise where you walk the interviewer through your solution while solving a problem
  • A third technical interview, if deemed necessary, which assesses your leadership traits

PayPal focuses on a candidate-friendly approach to interviewing. While you’re selling yourself as an applicant, the company is also pitching itself to you. PayPal aims to hire for mutual fit and wants to make sure you understand its value proposition as an employer, so make sure to discuss how the role and company can help you grow professionally. The onsite is a streamlined process which, under “normal” pre-pandemic circumstances, includes a tour of the campus and the chance to meet all the team members you may work with.

If you pass the onsite, you’ll receive an offer by email or phone. The average salary at PayPal is $110,043, according to PayScale . To find average the average salary for your role, level, and location, check out our offer review community .

You can also expect benefits such as:

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Free access to a licensed mental health provider through Optum
  • ESPP at 15% discount on up to 10% of base salary
  • 401k match up to 4% of salary
  • Unlimited PTO (how much you can actually take is team dependent)
  • 1-month sabbatical every 5 years
  • 8 weeks paid parental leave (this is pretty lower compared to others in the industry)
  • $5,000 learning budget with manager approval
  • Subsidized meals in the office

Employees generally seem really happy with PayPal's benefits package. You can read more about PayPal's benefits on its website .

Extra Tips To Land a PayPal Role

paypal problem solving interview questions

Interview your interviewer

PayPal hiring managers want candidates to interview them as well, otherwise they run the risk of hiring someone who’s not a mutual fit. Ask in-depth questions about company culture, diversity and inclusion, and your day-to-day work. Even if you have certain preferences or workstyles that don’t necessarily gel with the company, mention them in a tactful way, if they come up. Hiring managers value transparency and sincere interest during the job interview. Candidates that don’t ask probing questions may be disqualified .

Show that you have an innovative mindset

As a disruptor in the online payments space, PayPal wants to hire innovators who challenge the status quo. Show tangible examples of your work that demonstrate how you decided to do things a different way or experiment with a quirky idea, even if others said it wouldn’t work. Examples include your GitHub repo, contributions to open-source projects, a passion project, or ongoing endeavors at your current company.

Mentioning these accomplishments in your resume and cover letter will get you noticed, but be sure to mention these projects first round and onsite interviews as well. Choose projects that showcase initiative and creative thinking, even if you’ve never been in a position to implement your ideas.

Reviews about culture and work-life balance are VERY mixed

Employees overwhelmingly explain that culture and work-life balance are team-dependent , and this checks out — both are frequently listed as pros for some employees and cons for others.

When discussing culture specifically, a lot of people claim that favoritism and politics are ingrained in PayPal's culture, while others claim the environment is supportive and inclusive. This PayPal employee explained on Blind:

"It really seems to depend on the department and team, varying from great to Amazon level toxicity."

Another employee on Blind highlighted the sentiment that WLB is very mixed:

"PayPal is totally org dependent. I know people working 60 hours and others working less than 35, both delivering and performing well."

Almost Everyone Gets Refreshers

Refreshers at PayPal are dependent on your team and manager; they're typically based on a number of factors, but the 2 big ones are: your performance and the amount of unvested RSUs you're currently holding. They are not based on your initial grant.

Based on PayPal employee reviews, here are the average refresher amounts for tech positions:

  • T23: around $25k in annual refreshers
  • T24: around $20-40k in annual refreshers
  • T25: around $40-75k in annual refreshers
  • T26: around $65-10K in annual refreshers

Question 1 of 30

At PayPal, we seek to hire leaders. Tell me about a time when you took the initiative to improve work related procedures.

How to Answer

1st answer example, 2nd answer example.

PayPal is an award-winning, globally recognized company. They need to hire the best of the best. Have you ever taken the opportunity to present your employer with potential change? Talk to the hiring manager about a time when you took the initiative in the workplace.

"I was able to present and implement one specific change in the office this past year. It was a recycling program that I felt was very important, even for our smaller office. We had significantly less waste after my initiative was implemented and I enjoyed seeing others take pride in helping our environment."

"I recently made suggestions to my manager about the team messaging application we were using. I found a team based app that offered a lower monthly cost, with added features. He took the suggestion, and it has worked well for our team! The company was happy with the cost savings as well."

2. How would you rate your performance in this interview so far?

The interviewer would like to know if you are satisfied with your interview performance. If your interview were a flop, you would know, and it's much better to address outright your performance than try to sweep it under the rug. If you feel that your performance in the inFterview is going well: 'I believe that this interview has been quite informative and I am happy with my performance. Is there anything that I can clarify for you from this conversation?' If you feel that your performance in the interview is not going well: "I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

"I am not sure if I have been able to portray myself 100% accurately in this interview; although, I am trying my best. If there is anything more I can clarify for you, I would be happy to do so."

"I feel confident about our discussion today and am looking forward to the next steps in the interview process."

3. What do you know about the PayPal Giving Fund?

The interviewer would like to know how much research you have performed on their organization before your meeting. The PayPal Giving Fund is a charitable service that allows PayPal users to support their favorite organizations through fast and easy online donations. Charities can enroll with the PayPal giving fund. Their supporters can then send grant money through Paypal, eBay, and GoFundMe. PayPal provides the donation to the charity on your behalf, directly to their PayPal accounts. This question offers an excellent opportunity for you to discuss the interest that you have in supporting charitable organizations and other efforts close to your heart.

"I am thrilled that PayPal has such a giving mindset. I know that the PayPal Giving Fund is a charitable organization that connects donors and charitable organizations so that it's easy to give funds safely and securely. I commit 100 volunteer hours per year to the Humane Society. It's important to give back to the causes that we care about."

"I have researched the PayPal giving fund and am more than impressed with the giving initiative, and what it has done for over 200 charitable organizations. I am passionate about breast cancer awareness and am happy to see this deserving charity on the list of recipients."

4. Over the last ten years, PayPal has acquired 19 competitors. If you could recommend our next corporate acquisition, which would it be?

eBay purchased PayPal in 2002, and since then, the company has acquired an immense amount of smaller companies - helping the online financial giant to grow exponentially. Some of the companies that PayPal has acquired include: - 2018 acquisition of iZettle, PayPal's largest acquisition to date at $2.2B - BillMeLater - Xoom Corporation - Braintree - CyActive - Swift Financial The interviewer is interested in hearing where you think PayPal would benefit when it comes to additional acquisitions. There is not necessarily a right or wrong reply to this question. The interviewer wants to see your line of thought and how active you are in the payment solutions industry and trends.

Written by Rachelle Enns on September 23rd, 2018

"I believe that PayPal could acquire a lot of interesting companies. If I were to make a recommendation, I would move away from companies who are in the business of creating online payment options and look at tech companies who are disturbing the landscape when it comes to cloud security, for instance."

"I am very impressed by how many companies PayPal has acquired over the years. If I could recommend your next corporate acquisition, I would look towards a company who has their hands in AI as artificial intelligence in banking is going to disrupt the industry seriously."

5. Looking at your resume, I see multiple gaps between employments, what were you doing during those gaps?

The interviewer would like an explanation for the gaps in your resume. There are many reasons for having a gap in your resume, and it's best, to be honest about what you were doing. Keep your answer short and sweet, and ensure the interviewer that you did not allow your industry knowledge to become stale, or redundant, during that time.

"I had a gap from 2009-2010 while I was on maternity leave and then another for six months in 2015 while I cared for an ailing parent. During that time I was vigilant in keeping up to date on the market so that my knowledge did not become redundant."

"Thank you for addressing this with me. There is a gap where I took some time to further my education. During that time, I completed my Bachelor of Computer Science."

6. How do you handle working with little to no supervision?

Little supervision often comes after some time, when trust is well established between yourself and your employer. The interviewer would like to know if you have worked in an environment that offers little amounts of supervision. Primarily, they are looking for proof that you can be productive even when nobody is watching or supervising you. Be sure to ask the interviewer about the level of supervision in this particular role. You want to make sure it's a good fit for you.

"I am a reliable employee who works hard, no matter who is watching. You can rest assured that I deliver great work at all times. Would you say that this role is loosely, or more closely, supervised?"

"I enjoy close supervision on particular areas of a project, and then I need room to work during other more independent project stages. I believe that a talented tech director knows when to step in, and when to give room to work. Would you agree?"

7. Tell me about a time when you had to learn something new within a short deadline.

The interviewer wants to know that you can learn new skills, under pressure. Hiring managers want to hear that you are willing to put in the effort required to learn new skills, even when it may seem confusing. Think about the times when your company implemented new software, or when you learned a new procedure. Perhaps your employer has asked you to attend a workshop at the last minute, or you had to study for a policy exam. These make great examples! Discuss how you diligently studied related materials, attended a training seminar, or bought a book to help you learn the new content. Keep in mind; this is another excellent opportunity to express that you accept workplace changes with ease.

"Our company recently implemented a new SAP system. Not only was I tasked with learning the system but I also needed to train my team of five on the use of the system. I had two weeks, so I took a lot of the modules home, watched a plethora of tutorials online, and even utilized some how-to videos on YouTube. I did it, and was proud of the accomplishment."

"When I first began my IT career, I started as a temp with an agency. Placed in a variety of roles that changed monthly, sometimes even weekly, I often jumped into roles where there was a lot to learn in a short time. Deadlines were often due yesterday. I utilized and maximized my resources to the fullest. I learned about plenty of industries and best of all, had fun doing it!"

8. PayPal has over 179 million active accounts. How do you think we can attract an even larger customer base?

PayPal is a global company, with clients in nearly every country in the world. PayPal realizes that they have the majority of the market when it comes to online financial services. The interviewer is interested in seeing if you have any unique ideas for gaining an even larger active user base. Tap into your creative thinking and suggest how you think PayPal could grow larger.

"In the case of PayPal, where you have so many subscribers already, I feel that a great focus could be on expanding the spend of those 179 million users, or the frequency which they use PayPal, rather than zeroing in on new customers. The ones who are already loyal may benefit from other services such as third-party contest and coupon codes."

"PayPal is by far the giant when it comes to content streaming services. To attract an even larger customer base, I would recommend having content that is searchable by language, and then advertising to countries where PayPal may not be as prominent."

9. What was the biggest change you have had to deal with in your career?

The interviewer would like to know the types of challenges you have had to face in your career. You need to show the interviewer that you can remain productive in the face of change and that you are resilient. Assure the interviewer that you can adapt to significant changes in a professional manner.

"The biggest change that I have faced in my career so far would be when my previous company went through a major merger. We had to adapt to new processes and management which was quite challenging. In the end, it worked out well for the company, from a financial perspective, so the changes were well worth the challenges we faced initially."

"The biggest change in my career came when my company experienced major layoffs. One-third of my production team experienced layoffs even though our work volume remained nearly the same. I adjusted the schedule, introduced a new overtime policy, and worked very hard to maintain morale despite the changes."

10. What is the difference between customer service and customer support?

This question may seem like splitting hairs, but it is not. Customer support often requires more technical abilities, and customer service is more of a positive approach, helping your company to keep customers happy. Sometimes a customer service agent will be on the frontlines and will need to escalate a customer issue to the support team. Give the interviewer your best understanding of service versus support.

"I understand customer support to be a larger term than customer service. Someone can be a customer service agent without being able to offer ample support that a client may need. It's important to offer both; however, a member of the support team will likely be better trained with special technical skills."

"Customer service and customer support are often confused. I have two teams. My service team will gather the data, and my support team will deploy the actual solution."

11. Are you familiar with the range of services that PayPal offers?

PayPal is more than just online money transfers. Their range of services include but are not limited to: - Sending and accepting money on a personal level - PayPal for your business' website checkout - Mobile card readers for receiving payments - Creation and sending of professional invoices - Accepting payments via phone - Point of sale payment options Discuss what you know about PayPal's services, and be sure to mention the options that you have used in the past.

"I have used PayPal on a regular basis for a few years now. In the past, I worked as a freelance website developer and accepted client payments through PayPal because it was the option that I trusted the most. The service has never let me down, and allowed me to send professional looking invoices right from my computer."

"I am quite familiar with PayPal for business, and for personal use. I have had an account for about ten years now. About once per week I will accept or send money through PayPal. Even when checking out online with my favorite retailer, I will choose PayPal as my payment option because I appreciate the guarantee that you offer. It makes me feel safer when buying from retailers that I have never purchased from before."

12. Have you ever had to contact PayPal customer support? If so, describe your experience.

PayPal is known for their fantastic customer support. The interviewer would like to know what your experience has been with their company. Of course, your response should remain positive. If you did not have a great customer service experience with PayPal, you can be honest but be sure to end on a positive note.

"I have heard many excellent things about PayPal customer service. I have had three amazing experiences and one average one, which was a one-off experience. I had called a few times after receiving error codes that I was unable to figure out on my own. The wait time was short and the agent, knowledgeable and energetic."

"Thankfully, my PayPal services have always worked seamlessly, and usually faster than my traditional banking options. I like that you have various support methods and I hear that the wait time is quite short."

13. What are the differences between C++ and Java?

There are a thousand reasons you could state as to why C++ and Java are different from each other. The interviewer; however, is not necessarily looking for how much you know, but how well you can explain it. Quickly rattling off 100 facts is not the correct way to respond to this question. Have a well-structured and easy to understand answer ready for the interviewer.

"There are many differences between C++ and Java; however, the difference that stands out the most to me is the fact that C++ is platform dependent, and Java is platform independent."

"I could speak for a long time regarding the exhaustive list of differences; however, for me, the biggest difference is the fact that C++ is a Write once, compile anywhere (WOCA) language and Java is a Write once, run anywhere/everywhere (WORA/WORE) programming language."

14. How do you keep up-to-date on new technologies and trends in this industry?

One way that a potential employer will gauge 'fit' is by ensuring that you are passionate about your particular industry. Show the interviewer that you are passionate about your industry by openly discussing how you stay on top of industry trends.

"I keep up to date on new technologies and trends through a variety of sources. I follow the TED blog so that I can learn from industry leaders as well as read multiple articles online per week. My favorite resource at the moment is TechCrunch. I am also very open to new suggestions!"

"Of course, the PayPal Stories section on your website is in my repertoire, as is Mashable and The Verge. I also keep up on new trends in this industry by taking additional coursework online, whenever possible."

15. What do you think you will like about this role with PayPal?

Most people believe that working for PayPal is the 'cream of the crop' when it comes to excellent job opportunities. The interviewer wants to hear what you are looking forward to learning and experiencing in this new position. Talk about what excites you! Share how this position will challenge you and help you grow. New opportunities are a chance for you to demonstrate your skills. Be specific and share your passion for this new role.

"I look forward to helping spread the word when it comes to people gaining control over their money again. Non-traditional banking methods are incredibly important to people, and open doors and provide truly inspiring freedoms. I cannot wait to contribute to that."

"I am looking forward to getting more experience in UI, and feel that PayPal is the best place for me. You have a great reputation for creating beautiful user designs and easy to use services."

16. At PayPal, we prefer to hire those with an education in computer science or another related field. Walk me through your post-secondary education and training.

The interviewer will likely have an idea of your education background from your resume. What they are asking is for you to take a few minutes to bring the experience to life for them! What was your major? Did you receive any special academic recognition? Discuss the strengths gained during your post-secondary training and how those skills will be used in your new position with PayPal.

"I completed my Bachelor of Applied Technology from Carnegie Mellon University in 2004. During that time I specialized in Data Management and Analysis. I graduated with a 3.99 GPA, one of the top in my class."

"I recently completed my Diploma in Information Technology. I also have a great deal of on the job training and certifications, all listed on my resume. One of the biggest take-away's from my post-secondary experience was learning how to manage my time while working on multiple projects successfully. I perfected my multi-tasking skills and am excited to bring those to work for PayPal."

17. We encourage innovation at PayPal. What does innovation mean to you?

PayPal has a Director of Innovation and an Innovation Lab. Now, that's a dedication to innovation! In the lab, they thrive on engaging curious employees who look at things differently. PayPal wants employees who ask tremendous and unique questions and connect things that may not obviously go together, Talk to the interviewer about the ways that you have contributed to an environment of innovation in the workplace.

"In my previous role I was fortunate enough to introduce my company to the idea of a gold level service where, in addition to our general customer service, we added on service options. Our customer base responded very positively, and we kept the program running for a few years. To me, innovation is creating new products and services that are useful to customers and also help my company stand out further in their space."

"I think that innovation means being someone who thrives on change and remains nimble in their work. Innovation can mean creating a new and powerful idea, and it can also mean simplifying an existing one."

18. Culture fit is important to us at PayPal. How will you contribute to our culture of diversity?

Diversity and inclusion are topics at the forefront of PayPal. They state to 'respect and value uniqueness and diversity, regardless of background, level or circumstances.' In fact, PayPal was on Fortune's 2018 list of Most Admired Companies. One of the ways that PayPal embraces diversity is through their Diversity & Inclusion committees. PayPal has groups such as: - PayPal Pride; a group for LGBTQ employees and allies - Unity; a group of women and men working to create more opportunities for women - Opportunity; a group for the specially-abled or disadvantaged including socioeconomic status - Serve; a group for Veterans and their allies - Amplify; a group focused on the recruitment, retention, and advancement of Black employees Discuss with the interviewer how you will complement the corporate culture of diversity and inclusion at PayPal.

"I embrace diversity in the workplace and would be thrilled to become involved in the Amplify group at PayPal. I am passionate about these issues and look forward to contributing towards cultural awareness. I will certainly assist with any mentorship opportunities that come my way."

"Diversity in the workplace is an incredibly important conversation. I am a dedicated ally of the LGBTQ community and look forward to being an active member of the PayPal Pride chapter here in San Francisco."

19. Who would you say inspires you?

PayPal appreciates solid values, collaboration, and inclusion. They find inspiration in the good and need to hire people who think the same way. Show the interviewer that you are a thoughtful person who finds inspiration in deeper sources. Your life's inspiration can come from a book, a mentor, your family, author - literally anyone! Talk to the interviewer about who has inspired your life and why.

"I find inspiration in a variety of people and things. I would have to say that the person who has most greatly inspired me has been my grandmother. She always had a smile on her face no matter how hard she worked and she loved everyone. She was well respected and always gave more than she received. I try to live like her as much as I can."

"I am continually inspired by the books that I read! Whether it is the author, or the characters themselves, I love to get lost in a good novel for inspiration."

20. If you could start your career over again, what direction would you take?

PayPal is a company driven by purpose, and now, they want to know more about what inspires you. A hiring manager will be able to tell a lot about your personality and desires by learning about your other career interests. If you could do anything over, what would you do, and why?

"I certainly do not regret the direction I have taken my career; however, if I had to start over in a new direction completely I would likely pursue my Degree in Education and become a teacher. Both of my parents were teachers, and they seemed to have a very fulfilling career. I enjoy coaching and leading others so, any tasks in my current career that related to these skills, are very welcome."

"I cannot even think of another career than the one that I have! If I had to choose, I would pursue a career in the arts so that I could continue to exercise my creative side."

21. Working at PayPal, you will experience changes on a regular basis. When have you had to change a significant component of your project due to new information being presented?

Being able to swivel the focus of your project is a necessary skill for your success in most careers. Talk to the interviewer about a time when a significant change occurred on a project. How did you handle the implementation of the new information?

"I had a large project last month that was nearly complete when the client called to say that the specs provided were incorrect. Because of this, our team had to re-do the entire project. It took us an additional four days of work but, in the end, the client was delighted with our work, and it resulted in new opportunities with them."

"I would say that being in the software and technology business means changing major components on projects on a very regular basis. I am very well accustomed to changing gears on a moment's notice and can adapt very well."

22. We consider research to be the backbone of what we do at PayPal. Do you think it's essential to research before beginning a project or would you instead jump right in?

Talk to the interviewer about your work habits and the way in which you prefer to approach a new project. If you have a sense of how PayPal prefers to approach their work you should discuss that method. For instance, if the interviewer tells you that they prefer extensive research before beginning a project, that is your queue to talk about your excellent research skills.

"I agree that research is the backbone of a strong project. Without it, important details are missed and much time is wasted. I like to research before starting a project so that I can lay out a plan and understand the potential hurdles as well."

"Although there are some instances where jumping right it may be required, I always prefer to research before I being a project. Rest assured; I would always follow your preferred methods, should I be hired."

23. At PayPal, we take privacy and confidentiality very seriously. Are you willing to sign a non-disclosure agreement, if hired?

Signing a non-disclosure agreement is quite common in the software and technology industry. If hired, you will likely become privy to trade secrets, pending patents, and other innovative projects that must remain confidential. Talk to the interviewer about your willingness to sign an agreement. If you are currently under a non-disclosure or non-compete agreement with your present employer, now is the time to discuss that.

25. If asked to refactor a piece of legacy code that is critical to business operations, what precautions would you take?

Legacy code usually means it’s integral to the business, and any changes could have a major impact. This question is geared towards understanding your approach to managing risk and ensuring business continuity. It’s about uncovering your thought process when dealing with sensitive tasks, your technical acumen, and your understanding of software engineering best practices. It’s also an opportunity to see if you understand the importance of communication and collaboration when working on large-scale projects.

Example: “Refactoring legacy code, especially one critical to business operations, requires careful planning and execution.

I would first ensure a robust suite of tests is in place to catch any potential bugs or issues that might arise during the refactoring process. This will help maintain functionality while improving the code’s structure.

Next, I’d employ a step-by-step approach, making small changes incrementally rather than large-scale modifications all at once. This minimizes risk and makes it easier to identify problems if they occur.

Furthermore, I’d involve stakeholders throughout the process, ensuring their requirements are met and keeping them informed about progress and potential impacts on system performance.

Lastly, thorough documentation of the refactoring process is crucial for future reference and understanding by other team members.”

Paypal Software Engineer Interview Questions + Guide in 2024

Back to Paypal

Introduction

PayPal has been the face of online money transfers since 1999, and a member of the Fortune 500 since 2016. This fintech company relies on software engineers to maintain their current success, and to develop new solutions for emerging opportunities.

The company’s high profile and strong employee benefits make PayPal a dream destination for software engineers. Many applicants, however, don’t make it far into the interview process. This guide can help you avoid this fate.

The information below will help you get familiar with the interview process, as well as the type of interview questions you may face when you apply for a Software Engineer position at PayPal.

What is the Interview Process Like for a Software Engineering Role at Paypal?

The typical interview process for a software engineering job at PayPal comprises the five steps discussed below. However, some candidates may have different experiences, e.g., multiple interview rounds in one session. The process can last anywhere from a few days to over a month.

Application

You can apply directly when the company advertises an open software engineering position, or you can be contacted by an internal recruiter on platforms like LinkedIn or email. Some applicants may also be referred by existing employees at PayPal.

Online Assessment

This assessment will be on a platform such as Hackerrank or Karat. Candidates are given two or three questions, which they must complete within a set amount of time, typically one hour.

Phone Screening

Some candidates for software engineering positions at PayPal have had a phone screening early on. This screening is conducted to assess personality, behavior, and cultural fit.

Technical Interview (1 - 2 Rounds)

Technical interviews are used to test candidates’ coding skills, problem-solving abilities, and other technical job requirements. Expect questions on data structures and algorithms. You may also be given a problem statement and asked to code a solution. The interview may be either virtual or onsite.

Hiring Manager Interview

During this interview round, mostly behavioral and culture fit questions will be asked. Prepare to answer questions on previous roles, projects, motivations, salary expectations, and the information from your resume. Some technical questions may be asked during this interview as well.

What Questions Are Asked in a PayPal Software Engineer Interview?

1. why do you want to work at paypal.

The hiring managers will ask this question to establish your motivations for wanting to join the company, and whether your expectations for the Software Engineer position align with the role at PayPal.

How to Answer

Take this opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge of PayPal as a company, and of the software engineering role specifically. Talk about what you like about the role, how it aligns with your career goals, and how the company culture aligns with your values.

“I once worked part-time in retail and I know the importance of having the right payment solutions. PayPal is that solution for many businesses today, to the tune of six billion transactions per quarter. This role will allow me to play a part in helping businesses solve the challenges they face when they need to get paid. I’ve also heard positive things about the work culture here and how the company prioritizes employees’ physical and mental well-being.”

2. What are closures in JavaScript?

This question tests your knowledge of coding using JavaScript. This is a necessary skill for Software Engineers at PayPal.

Define what closures are in the context of JavaScript and explain their importance.

“Closures are used in JavaScript to enable inner functions to access the scope of an outer function. Closures are important because they ensure that JS functions can access all the data they need.”

3. Tell me a bit about your most recent job experience.

Interviewers ask this question to test how well your past experiences have prepared you for the software engineering role at Paypal.

Talk about the projects and responsibilities you’ve had in the past, focusing on the experiences that are relevant to the Software Engineer position. Show how these experiences align with the role at PayPal.

“For the past year, I’ve been working as a junior Software Engineer at Bermuda Capital. I worked with the cyber security team to keep user data safe and identify gaps in the existing infrastructure that malicious actors could exploit. One of my key achievements was identifying a vulnerability introduced by the use of a deprecated software package.”

4. Are you actively interviewing with other companies?

This question can be asked during your Paypal Software Engineer interview because interviewers want to know if you’re genuinely interested in the role and industry, and also whether they need to move up their recruitment timeline in case there’s competition.

Answer the question honestly without oversharing. If possible, point out the common factors that made you consider both companies. Let the interviewers know why working for PayPal is a serious consideration for you.

“I’m currently interviewing with one other fintech company. I was interested in both roles because they involve the development of new features to facilitate the use of AI. The role here at PayPal is exciting for me because it will give me opportunities to assume leadership roles on some projects, and I’ll have some of the best engineers contributing to my ideas.”

5. Why would you use a MySQL database over other options?

Software Engineers at PayPal will have multiple tools available to them. Hiring managers will want to know whether you employ a sensible system when picking one tool and excluding others.

Demonstrate that you were aware there were other options you could have worked with, but chose to work with a specific tool because it afforded some specific advantage. Avoid making negative comments about the alternatives you didn’t choose.

“The company I’m working for is a non-profit. It was important to choose a DBMS that was secure and reliable, but also affordable due to the company’s limited funding.”

A hiring manager will ask this question to test your knowledge of the Java programming language, an important asset for a Software Engineer at PayPal.

State the general principles you would follow when coding, to ensure the contents of a class can’t be changed after it has been created.

“I’d declare the class as final to ensure it can’t be extended. All fields would be private and made final, and no setter methods would be provided for any variable. Fields would only be initialized by a constructor performing a deep copy, and only cloned copies of objects would be returned.”

7. What is a data structure?

This question tests your knowledge of data structures, an important skill for a Software Engineer at Paypal, where efficient problem solving will be needed to solve complex issues.

Explain what data structures are and why they play an important role in the work done by software engineers.

“Data structures are unique systems used to organize, process, retrieve, and store data. They are designed to improve the efficiency of these operations. A data structure is chosen based on its suitability for a specific type of task.”

Give an example of something that you figured out that helped to improve one or more aspects of your work. Ensure that it is an idea that solves a problem that is relevant to PayPal and the software engineering position.

Explain what standards you currently use when coding and why you adopted them, but show that you’re willing to make the necessary changes to align your coding practices with the team’s.

“I currently follow software-specific coding conventions with minor changes necessitated by the industry I work in. When I had to adopt a new coding standard in the past, I went through the guidelines provided by the team and also evaluated existing code from team members. I trust these methods, plus a linter on my IDE, would help me to adopt the coding standards at PayPal too.”

10. Are you familiar with build systems?

This question tests your understanding of build systems and their importance to your work as a software engineer. The software engineers behind complex software systems like PayPal need such solutions to make their jobs easier.

Explain what build systems are and, perhaps, an example of where you have used a build system in the past.

  • How do you handle constructive criticism, and can you provide an example?
  • How do you stay updated with industry trends and developments?
  • Why do you want to work here?
  • Where do you see yourself in five years?

A great way to assess job-related skills? Scenario-based interview questions.

These hypothetical situations present candidates with issues they may encounter in the role, allowing them to demonstrate their skills and problem-solving abilities. Here are a few examples:

  • In an interview for a client services position, you may ask, "Can you describe a time when you successfully resolved a challenging client complaint?"
  • For a sales role you may ask, "Can you describe a situation where you successfully exceeded a sales target and how you achieved it?"

By actively engaging and asking insightful follow-up questions, interviewers can gain a deeper understanding of a candidate's qualifications, thought processes, and communication skills.

Asking follow-up questions such as, "Can you provide more details about that experience?" or "How did you handle that challenge?" helps probe deeper into a candidate's experiences.

When candidates align with your company values and culture, they tend to integrate seamlessly into the organization, ultimately contributing to a more cohesive, engaged, and thriving workplace.

Asking questions related to company values and culture during the hiring process can help identify potential hires who not only possess the right skills but also resonate with your company's team dynamics and overall mission. Discover more employee management best practices.

As the leader of your business, you want to set every new hire up for success. So it’s critical to clearly explain all company and role-specific expectations, empowering candidates to make an informed decision about the role.

When candidates have a precise understanding of what the job entails, they can ask relevant questions to clarify any uncertainties. This two-way dialogue not only ensures that candidates are well-informed but also allows employers to gauge the candidate's genuine interest and alignment with the role.

Toward the end of an interview, allow time for candidate questions. Begin by actively listening to a candidate's inquiries, ensuring you understand their concerns fully. Provide clear and transparent responses and avoid embellishment or overpromising.

If there are aspects of the role or company that may not align with the candidate's expectations, it’s best to address them openly and honestly, which may help lessen or avoid employee turnover later on.

To evaluate a candidate during an interview, establish predefined criteria that align with the role’s specific requirements. Here are some tips to get started:

  • Create a list of specific criteria that candidates will be evaluated against , such as technical skills, soft skills, experience, and qualifications.
  • Assign weights to each criterion to reflect their relative importance in the role . Some criteria may be more critical than others (such as technical expertise vs. soft skills), so allocate higher weights to them accordingly. The sum of all weights should equal 100%.
  • Establish a scoring system that allows you to assess candidates against each criterion . You can use a numerical scale (e.g., 1 to 5) or a descriptive scale (e.g., Poor, Fair, Good, Excellent).
  • Calculate the total scores for each candidate  by summing the scores across all criteria, taking into account the weights assigned to each criterion.

After each interview, compare scores, discuss discrepancies, and make informed decisions based on the data. This approach ensures fair, uniform assessments and helps identify the most qualified candidates who genuinely meet the job's needs.

What Is Problem-Solving?

When you’re trying to land a position, there’s a good chance you’ll face some problem-solving interview questions. But what exactly is problem-solving? And why is it so important to hiring managers?

Well, the good folks at Merriam-Webster define problem-solving as “the process or act of finding a solution to a problem.” While that may seem like common sense, there’s a critical part to that definition that should catch your eye.

What part is that? The word “process.”

In the end, problem-solving is an activity. It’s your ability to take appropriate steps to find answers, determine how to proceed, or otherwise overcome the challenge.

Being great at it usually means having a range of helpful problem-solving skills and traits. Research, diligence, patience, attention-to-detail , collaboration… they can all play a role. So can analytical thinking , creativity, and open-mindedness.

But why do hiring managers worry about your problem-solving skills? Well, mainly, because every job comes with its fair share of problems.

While problem-solving is relevant to scientific, technical, legal, medical, and a whole slew of other careers. It helps you overcome challenges and deal with the unexpected. It plays a role in troubleshooting and innovation. That’s why it matters to hiring managers.

How to Answer Problem-Solving Interview Questions

Okay, before we get to our examples, let’s take a quick second to talk about strategy. Knowing how to answer problem-solving interview questions is crucial. Why? Because the hiring manager might ask you something that you don’t anticipate.

Problem-solving interview questions are all about seeing how you think. As a result, they can be a bit… unconventional.

These aren’t your run-of-the-mill job interview questions . Instead, they are tricky behavioral interview questions . After all, the goal is to find out how you approach problem-solving, so most are going to feature scenarios, brainteasers, or something similar.

So, having a great strategy means knowing how to deal with behavioral questions. Luckily, there are a couple of tools that can help.

First, when it comes to the classic approach to behavioral interview questions, look no further than the STAR Method . With the STAR method, you learn how to turn your answers into captivating stories. This makes your responses tons more engaging, ensuring you keep the hiring manager’s attention from beginning to end.

Now, should you stop with the STAR Method? Of course not. If you want to take your answers to the next level, spend some time with the Tailoring Method , too.

With the Tailoring Method, it’s all about relevance. So, if you get a chance to choose an example that demonstrates your problem-solving skills, this is really the way to go.

Top 3 Problem-Solving-Based Interview Questions

Alright, here is what you’ve been waiting for: the problem-solving questions and sample answers.

While many questions in this category are job-specific, these tend to apply to nearly any job. That means there’s a good chance you’ll come across them at some point in your career, making them a great starting point when you’re practicing for an interview.

So, let’s dive in, shall we? Here’s a look at the top three problem-solving interview questions and example responses.

1. Can you tell me about a time when you had to solve a challenging problem?

In the land of problem-solving questions, this one might be your best-case scenario. It lets you choose your own problem-solving examples to highlight, putting you in complete control.

When you choose an example, go with one that is relevant to what you’ll face in the role. The closer the match, the better the answer is in the eyes of the hiring manager.

EXAMPLE ANSWER:

“While working as a mobile telecom support specialist for a large organization, we had to transition our MDM service from one vendor to another within 45 days. This personally physically handling 500 devices within the agency. Devices had to be gathered from the headquarters and satellite offices, which were located all across the state, something that was challenging even without the tight deadline. I approached the situation by identifying the location assignment of all personnel within the organization, enabling me to estimate transit times for receiving the devices. Next, I timed out how many devices I could personally update in a day. Together, this allowed me to create a general timeline. After that, I coordinated with each location, both expressing the urgency of adhering to deadlines and scheduling bulk shipping options. While there were occasional bouts of resistance, I worked with location leaders to calm concerns and facilitate action. While performing all of the updates was daunting, my approach to organizing the event made it a success. Ultimately, the entire transition was finished five days before the deadline, exceeding the expectations of many.”

2. Describe a time where you made a mistake. What did you do to fix it?

While this might not look like it’s based on problem-solving on the surface, it actually is. When you make a mistake, it creates a challenge, one you have to work your way through. At a minimum, it’s an opportunity to highlight problem-solving skills, even if you don’t address the topic directly.

When you choose an example, you want to go with a situation where the end was positive. However, the issue still has to be significant, causing something negative to happen in the moment that you, ideally, overcame.

“When I first began in a supervisory role, I had trouble setting down my individual contributor hat. I tried to keep up with my past duties while also taking on the responsibilities of my new role. As a result, I began rushing and introduced an error into the code of the software my team was updating. The error led to a memory leak. We became aware of the issue when the performance was hindered, though we didn’t immediately know the cause. I dove back into the code, reviewing recent changes, and, ultimately, determined the issue was a mistake on my end. When I made that discovery, I took several steps. First, I let my team know that the error was mine and let them know its nature. Second, I worked with my team to correct the issue, resolving the memory leak. Finally, I took this as a lesson about delegation. I began assigning work to my team more effectively, a move that allowed me to excel as a manager and help them thrive as contributors. It was a crucial learning moment, one that I have valued every day since.”

3. If you identify a potential risk in a project, what steps do you take to prevent it?

Yes, this is also a problem-solving question. The difference is, with this one, it’s not about fixing an issue; it’s about stopping it from happening. Still, you use problem-solving skills along the way, so it falls in this question category.

If you can, use an example of a moment when you mitigated risk in the past. If you haven’t had that opportunity, approach it theoretically, discussing the steps you would take to prevent an issue from developing.

“If I identify a potential risk in a project, my first step is to assess the various factors that could lead to a poor outcome. Prevention requires analysis. Ensuring I fully understand what can trigger the undesired event creates the right foundation, allowing me to figure out how to reduce the likelihood of those events occurring. Once I have the right level of understanding, I come up with a mitigation plan. Exactly what this includes varies depending on the nature of the issue, though it usually involves various steps and checks designed to monitor the project as it progresses to spot paths that may make the problem more likely to happen. I find this approach effective as it combines knowledge and ongoing vigilance. That way, if the project begins to head into risky territory, I can correct its trajectory.”

  • JOIN: Combines rows from two or more tables based on a related column
  • CREATE: Creates a new table or database
  • DROP: Deletes a table or database

Q7. What Is the Difference Between Navigational and Relational Databases?

Navigational databases use pointers to navigate between data records, often structured hierarchically or as network databases. Relational databases, on the other hand, store data in tables with predefined relationships between them, utilizing SQL for data manipulation. Relational databases are more flexible and easier to use for complex queries compared to navigational databases.

Q8. Can You Provide an Example of Where You Can or Should Use a Foreign Key?

A foreign key is used to establish a relationship between two tables. For example, in an employee database, you might have an Employees table with an EmployeeID primary key and a Departments table with a DepartmentID primary key. The Employees table can include a DepartmentID foreign key to link each employee to a specific department, ensuring data integrity and consistency.

Q9. What Is the Difference Between T-SQL and PL/SQL?

T-SQL (Transact-SQL) is an extension of SQL used in Microsoft SQL Server, incorporating procedural programming capabilities such as variables and control-of-flow statements. PL/SQL (Procedural Language/SQL), used in Oracle databases, adds features like exception handling, triggers, and support for stored procedures. Both enhance SQL with procedural constructs, but they are tailored to their respective database systems.

Q10. How Can You Identify if a Database Server Is Running Properly?

To identify if a database server is running properly:

  • Monitor performance metrics such as CPU, memory usage, and disk I/O.
  • Review database logs for errors and unusual activities.
  • Built-in diagnostic tools are used to perform health checks and execute test queries to ensure data retrieval and transactions are functioning correctly.

Regular monitoring and maintenance help ensure the database server's optimal performance and reliability.

Q11. During a Database Migration, How Would You Handle Data Loss?

Handling data loss during a database migration requires meticulous planning and a proactive approach. First, I would ensure a full backup is taken before the migration begins. Conducting the migration in a test environment helps identify potential issues beforehand. During the migration, I would implement transactional logging to capture any changes, ensuring the ability to roll back if necessary. Post-migration, I would validate data integrity by comparing source and target data, ensuring all records have been accurately transferred. Having a rollback plan is crucial to revert to the original state promptly if data loss is detected.

Q12. We Need to Build a New Database for Our Employee Records. How Would You Define the System Storage Requirements?

Defining system storage requirements for a new employee records database involves several key steps. I would estimate the initial data volume based on the number of employees and the types of records being stored. Considering the anticipated data growth over time is essential to ensure scalability. Performance requirements, such as read/write speeds and input/output operations per second (IOPS), must be taken into account to ensure the database can handle peak loads. Additionally, planning for redundancy and backups is vital to ensure data availability and recovery in case of failures.

Q13. Tell Me About Your Process for Troubleshooting Database Problems.

My process for troubleshooting database problems begins with identifying the issue by gathering information on the symptoms and error messages. I then isolate the problem by determining if it is related to the database, application, or infrastructure. Analyzing logs provides insights into potential causes. I conduct tests to pinpoint the root cause and apply the necessary fixes. Post-resolution, I monitor the database to ensure stability and document the issue, analysis, and resolution steps for future reference.

Q14. What Measurements Would You Take to Protect Our Databases from External Threats?

Protecting databases from external threats involves a multi-layered security strategy. Implementing firewalls to restrict access to the database server is the first step. Encrypting data at rest and in transit ensures data privacy and security. Role-based access control (RBAC) limits database access to authorized users only. Regularly applying security patches and updates is essential to protect against vulnerabilities. Continuous monitoring of database activity and conducting regular security audits help detect and respond to suspicious activities promptly.

Q15. What Types of Databases Do You Work With?

I have experience working with various types of databases , including relational databases like SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle, as well as NoSQL databases such as MongoDB and Cassandra. Additionally, I have worked with cloud databases , including Amazon RDS and Azure SQL Database, which offer scalable and flexible solutions for modern data management needs.

Q16. What is SQL Agent?

SQL Agent is a crucial component of Microsoft SQL Server that facilitates the automation of various administrative tasks. It allows database administrators to schedule jobs, which can include running SQL scripts, backing up databases, and performing maintenance tasks. SQL Agent ensures these jobs are executed at specified times or in response to specific events, simplifying routine database operations and improving efficiency. Its scheduling capability supports complex workflows and dependencies, making it an indispensable tool for managing SQL Server environments.

Q17. What is DBCC?

DBCC (Database Console Commands) is a set of T-SQL commands in Microsoft SQL Server used to perform maintenance, validation, and status checks on databases. DBCC commands are essential for maintaining the health and performance of SQL Server databases.

Q18. Explain What a System Database and a User Database Are

  • System Database: These are built-in databases that support SQL Server's internal operations. Key system databases include:
  • Master: Stores system-level information such as login accounts, system configuration settings, and the list of available databases.
  • Model: Serves as a template for all new databases created on the server.
  • msdb: Used by SQL Server Agent for scheduling jobs, alerts, and backups.
  • tempdb: Provides temporary storage for temporary tables and other short-term operations.
  • User Database: These are databases created by users to store and manage application-specific data. User databases are where the actual data for applications, such as business records or customer information, resides.

Q19. What Are the Operating Modes in Which Database Mirroring Runs? What Are the Differences Between Them?

Database mirroring operates in three modes:

  • High Safety with Automatic Failover (Synchronous): Ensures complete data synchronization between the principal and mirror databases. In case of a failure, automatic failover to the mirror database occurs.
  • High Safety without Automatic Failover (Synchronous): This also ensures data synchronization but requires manual intervention for failover.
  • High Performance (Asynchronous): Prioritizes performance over synchronization, allowing for some data loss during failover as transactions are not immediately mirrored.

Q20. Explain the Purpose of a Model Database

The model database in SQL Server acts as a blueprint for new databases. Any objects, settings, or configurations added to the model database are automatically applied to new databases created on the server. This ensures consistency and saves time by providing a predefined structure and configuration for new databases.

Q21. What Is the Difference Between a Data Processor and a Data Controller?

In the context of GDPR , a Data Controller is an entity that determines the purposes and means of processing personal data. Essentially, they make decisions about how and why data is processed. For example, a company that collects customer information to provide services acts as a data controller. On the other hand, a Data Processor handles data on behalf of the data controller. They process the data based on the controller's instructions and do not make decisions about the data. For instance, a cloud storage provider that stores customer data on behalf of a company is considered a data processor.

Q22. Explain What Are the Right of Access Requests

The right of access under GDPR allows individuals to request access to the data held by organizations. This means individuals can inquire about what data is being processed, why it is being processed, and who it is being shared with. Organizations must respond to these requests within one month, providing a copy of the data and information about its processing. This right ensures transparency and allows individuals to verify that their data is being handled lawfully.

Q23. Do All Businesses Need a Data Protection Officer (DPO)?

Not all businesses are required to appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO). Under GDPR, a DPO is mandatory for organizations that process large volumes of personal data, engage in regular and systematic monitoring of individuals, or handle sensitive data categories. However, businesses of all sizes can benefit from having a DPO to ensure compliance and manage data protection practices effectively.

Q24. Can Anyone Access the Personal Data Within Your Company? Or Are There Different Levels of Access?

Access to personal data within a company should be restricted based on roles and responsibilities. Typically, there are different levels of access, with only authorized personnel having access to specific data. Implementing role-based access control ensures that employees access only the data necessary for their job functions, thereby enhancing data security and compliance with GDPR.

Q25. How Can You Collect Data (by Email, Activity Tracking, etc.)?

Data can be collected through various methods, including email, activity tracking, online forms, and surveys. For example, businesses can collect data via email subscriptions, track user activity on websites through cookies, and gather feedback through online surveys. Regardless of the method, it is crucial to obtain explicit consent from individuals and inform them about how their data will be used and protected.

Q26. How Did You Learn About New Applications/Resources?

Staying current with new applications and resources is crucial for a DBA. I regularly follow industry blogs, attend webinars, and participate in professional forums. I also take online courses and certifications to deepen my knowledge. Networking with peers and attending industry conferences provides insights into emerging tools and best practices. This multi-faceted approach ensures I stay informed about the latest trends and technologies relevant to database administration.

Q27. What Is the Most Challenging Project You've Worked On? Why Was It Challenging, and What Was Your Role?

One of the most challenging projects I worked on involved migrating a large-scale e-commerce database to a new platform with minimal downtime. The complexity arose from the need to ensure data integrity while minimizing disruption to live operations. My role included:

  • Designing the migration strategy.
  • Coordinating with cross-functional teams.
  • Implementing the data transfer process.

Despite rigorous planning, unexpected compatibility issues arose, which required quick problem-solving and adjustments to the migration plan to meet the deadline successfully.

Q28. Can You Tell Me of a Time You Made a Mistake and How Did You Resolve It? Was There Any Way You Could Prevent It?

Once, I mistakenly executed a script that altered the schema of a production database, affecting several critical tables. I quickly identified the issue through monitoring tools and rolled back the changes using backup files. To prevent such mistakes in the future, I implemented a more extensive change management process, including thorough pre-deployment testing in a staging environment and peer reviews of scripts before execution.

Q29. If You Had to Work in a Team with People with Difficult Personalities and Constant Conflict, How Would You Manage It?

Managing a team with difficult personalities requires clear communication and conflict-resolution skills. I would facilitate regular team meetings to address issues and encourage open dialogue. Setting clear roles and responsibilities helps minimize misunderstandings. When conflicts arise, I address them promptly and mediate to find common ground, focusing on team goals and maintaining a professional environment.

Q30. Imagine You Have to Design a Database System for an Important Client with a Tight Deadline. How Would You Handle a Situation Where Your Boss Ignores Important Aspects to Meet the Deadline?

In such a scenario, I would first document the risks associated with skipping crucial steps, such as not using SQL facilities to ensure data integrity. I would then present these concerns to my boss, emphasizing the potential long-term impacts on data quality and security. If the decision remains unchanged, I will implement additional checks and safeguards to mitigate risks as much as possible, ensuring that the project meets both the deadline and essential quality standards.
