Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures

Welcome to the tesf network plus.

We have supported collaborative research to develop understanding of how education systems can act as drivers of sustainable development in India, Rwanda, Somalia/Somaliland and South Africa.

The Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures network was funded by the  Global Challenges Research Fund  through the  Economic and Social Research Council  Network Plus scheme. It was coordinated out of the University of Bristol and worked with partners in India, Rwanda, Somalia/Somaliland, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. It ran for three and a half years, from November 2019 to October 2023.

Our research addresses the role of education in climate action, decent work and sustainable cities. Addressing inequalities relating to poverty, gender and the status of indigenous knowledge are cross-cutting themes in our work, as are concerns for foregrounding marginalised voices and decolonising research.

Funded projects

Our aim is to develop new knowledge that can assist education policy makers, practitioners, non-governmental and community-based organisations to implement policies and practices in education that are transformative and can contribute to ensuring equitable, just and environmentally sustainable development.

We funded and supported a balanced mix of 67 exploratory, innovative studies and pilot projects lasting up to 12 months within the four countries of India, Rwanda, Somalia/Somaliland and South Africa.

The University of Bristol has offered students moving into the Metal Works accommodation £250 to help them 'settle into their new home' after they missed Freshers' Week. The offer came along with a reiterated apology and acknowledgement of the disappointment caused for what the uni calls as 'Welcome Week' - as they could not move in to the accomodation.

The letter detailed ongoing plans for events to help students get to know each other and settle into their new home, university life and the community. They include events held in the new halls of residence, as well as sessions on support available to students and information on what is on offer in Bedminster .

Last week, the university said: “Metal Works is an exciting, brand-new development for more than 800 students located in South Bristol, in the vibrant Bedminster area of the city. The move-in date, as stated on our website , is September 14. This is in time for the start of teaching on September 16 but after Welcome Week.

Hollywood star Anjelica Huston demands Bristol University ends forced swim tests on mice

"No freshers' week for us!" Students fume at missing out as 800-room accommodation block is delayed

“We know how important Welcome Week is for new students and we’re sorry if this causes any disappointment. A package of support and a series of events are being arranged for all residents so they can get to know each other and their local community during the first term in their new home.”

Metal Works was formally commissioned four years ago and the move-in date was agreed then as September 14, 2024. Since then, the university has undertaken a review of the structure of its academic year, which saw Welcome Week brought forward by a week.

One concern raised with the Bedminster accommodation has been the difficulty for students to travel to and from campus by bus. This has posed questions surrounding students who have accessibility needs, as well as the safety of students walking home late at night.

All undergraduates allocated university accommodation, including Metal Works, are entitled to a free U1 bus pass. However, as reported last week , the U1 bus pass does not cover services travelling from near the new Bedminster accommodation.

The University of Bristol took the decision to not provide a bus service as this would have added a significant amount to the rent for Metal Works. For £189, a substantial discount, students in this position can purchase an upgrade which will give them access to all buses in the West of England zone for the academic year.

Top 5 universities in the UK

5.  university of edinburgh.

Founded in 1583, the University of Edinburgh is the sixth-oldest university in the English-speaking world and one of Britain and Ireland’s seven ancient universities.

It is made up of three colleges: arts, humanities and social sciences; science and engineering; and medicine and veterinary medicine. Within these colleges are 20 academic schools.

A range of student clubs and societies is on offer, including a music society, a theatre society and a variety of sports teams including football, rowing, judo and rugby.

The student newspaper, The Student , is one of the oldest student newspapers in the UK. It was founded by the author Robert Louis Stevenson.

UCL’s main campus is in the central London area of Bloomsbury. Nearly half of all UCL students are from outside the UK, with significantly more from Asia than from continental Europe.

UCL was the first university in England to admit students irrespective of class, race or religion, and the first to admit women on equal terms with men, following the educational philosophy of Jeremy Bentham, the university’s “spiritual founder”.

For admission, undergraduate students are required to have achieved top grades in their high school exams. The most competitive degree is the BSc in philosophy, politics and economics, which receives 30 applicants for every place.

Famous alumni include Mahatma Gandhi; Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone; and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, who met the other members of his band at the university.

3. Imperial College London

Imperial’s main campus is near Kensington Palace in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, with other campuses around the city. The student cohort is extremely international and is made up of more than 125 nationalities.

Imperial College London is consistently ranked among the best universities in the world for science, technology, engineering, medicine and business.

It was formed in 1907 from a merger of three colleges in London and now has 17,000 students and 8,000 staff.

In addition to top scientists, Fields medallists and Nobel prizewinners, Imperial also produces influential government advisers and policymakers. Many graduates go on to achieve breakthrough innovations in industry and business, and are highly sought after by blue-chip companies and start-ups.

The author H. G. Wells and Sir Alexander Fleming, who discovered penicillin, are among Imperial’s famous alumni.

Ten things every international student in London should know

2. University of Cambridge

In total, 117 Nobel laureates are affiliated with the University of Cambridge , and Cambridge-linked mathematicians have won 11 Fields medals. Notable alumni include actors, athletes, politicians, royals and cultural figures, including biologist Charles Darwin, broadcaster David Attenborough, conservationist Jane Goodall and actress Olivia Colman.

Like Oxford, the University of Cambridge is fundamentally collegiate and is also one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities. The town is just an hour from London.

The university is home to more than 19,000 students and 9,000 staff. There are 31 colleges, some of which date back to the 13th century, and more than 100 academic departments.

Cambridge is particularly renowned for excellence in mathematics and has educated some of the most famous British scientists.

Undergraduates are taught via lectures and supervisions – intimate tutorials with only a couple of other students at most. The workload is heavy but terms are shorter than at many other UK universities.

Cambridge libraries are home to extensive collections of medieval manuscripts, and the university museums display collections of archaeological artefacts and zoological specimens.

Oxbridge and the Ivy League: tips for applications

1. University of Oxford

More than 30 world leaders, 27 British prime ministers, 50 Nobelists and 120 Olympic medallists were educated at Oxford. Stephen Hawking, Hugh Grant and Indira Gandhi are some of its famous graduates.

Undergraduates and postgraduates belong to one of its 44 colleges and often live in the college building or college-owned accommodation.

One of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, the University of Oxford attracts top scholars and students. Entry standards are high and admission is competitive; on average, the institution receives five applications for each available place.

Social life and recreational activities – such as rowing, cultural events and societies – also revolve around the college. Undergraduates are taught almost exclusively by tutors in their college, while postgraduate students are primarily served academically by a centralised faculty.

There are more than 100 libraries at Oxford, the most famous of which is the Bodleian, built in 1602. The city also has a number of museums, including the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, which houses the remains of a dodo, and the Museum of the History of Science, which displays a blackboard used by Albert Einstein.

More than a century ago, Floyd Hansmeier’s Grandpa Henry hopped on a train in Iowa seeking adventure out West. As family lore goes, when the train stopped for the night in Bristol, South Dakota, Henry Hansmeier got a hotel room for the night, overslept, missed the train and never left Bristol.

“He wanted to be a farmer, and he was not afraid to take chances, so he would go down to the courthouse and buy up land for the price of back taxes — 50 cents to $3 or $4 an acre — and that’s how he got started,” Floyd Hansmeier explained.

Grandpa Henry began growing seed on his farmland to sell to area farmers. This is how Hansmeier and his brother, Keith, came to be third-generation Day County farmers and owners of Hansmeier & Son Inc. along with their sister, Louise Oakland. The family has also been in the registered Polled Hereford business for many years.

At 113 years old, Hansmeier & Son Inc. is one of the oldest seed companies in South Dakota. In addition to seed purchased from other growers, the family also continues the tradition of raising and selling its own certified seed. And while the siblings are partners in the family business, Keith leads the farming operation, and Hansmeier leads the seed business.

With the knowledge that success in the field begins with seed quality, Hansmeier, like his dad and grandpa before him, has spent his career working tirelessly to maintain Hansmeier & Son Inc.’s legacy of quality seed through genetic selection and testing.

“My dad, Ralph, taught me the ropes of the seed business — I know enough about seed testing to be dangerous,” said the 1968 graduate of South Dakota State University. “I think South Dakota farmers are the best. Testing seed to ensure it is quality and free of weeds is No. 1 because farmers depend on us. If we did not test our seed, we could end up selling seed that would not germinate or a bag of seed that could introduce a noxious weed — untested seed could hurt a farmer’s yields and profits.”

Recognized for their dedication to quality, in 2004 Hansmeier & Son Inc. was named a Premier Certified Seed Grower by the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association. Before a shipment of seed is sold by Hansmeier & Son Inc., it undergoes rigorous testing. When it arrives in the company’s Bristol facilities, random samples are drawn from a large percentage of the seed and most samples are sent to the SDSU Seed Testing Lab.

Understanding the importance of seed testing, Hansmeier built a strong relationship with the South Dakota Crop Improvement Association and the SDSU Seed Testing Lab as a customer and supporter.

Investing in the future of plant scientists, breeders and testers, Hansmeier donates to the SDSU Collegiate Crops Judging Team and created the Ralph and Wanda Hansmeier Scholarship to support plant science students and honor his parents. Hansmeier advocated for and, through Hansmeier & Son Inc., contributed to the building of the Seed Technology Laboratory at the Research Park at SDSU. In 2002, Hansmeier was named a SDSU Friend of Plant Science.

Even though Hansmeier, 79, is a self-proclaimed workaholic — in his younger years beginning most days at Hansmeier & Son Inc. by 7 a.m. and ending them at 11 p.m. — over the years he made time for three additional priorities: family, the community of Bristol and seed industry organizations.

“When it comes to family, what else is there,” said Hansmeier, who prioritized 6 o’clock supper with his wife, Jill, and daughters Becky, Amy and Bethany. When their daughters were growing up, Hansmeier also made time to attend most of their events.

In the rural community of Bristol, Hansmeier is known as an employer who takes good care of his employees. Before it was commonplace, Hansmeier & Son Inc. provided employee health insurance and a profit-sharing program.

“We have a number of folks who have worked for us for 30 or 40 years, so taking care of employees was always important to our family business. It was something that my dad instilled in me,” Hansmeier said.

Hansmeier has given back to his country. He is a Vietnam veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal. He was also recognized as the top military history student in his class as a cadet at SDSU and recognized as the top student in the Subsistence Officer’s Course at Fort Lee, Virginia.

He has given back to the Bristol community: donating to 4-H and FFA programs, maintaining the local cemetery, participating in Veterans Day programs, donning a red suit for Santa Saturday and serving as treasurer of the Bristol Methodist Church. He also served as secretary/treasurer of the Bristol Commercial Club and on the board of directors for Sun Dial Manor.

Throughout his career, Hansmeier has served on the boards of directors for Foundation Seed Stocks, South Dakota Crop Improvement Association and South Dakota Seed Trade Association and as president of the Northern Seed Trade Association. He was a charter SODAK genetics seed associate.
