Daily School Physical Activity Improves Academic Performance

Physical activity (PA) may improve brain development, cognition, concentration and academic performance. In this prospective controlled intervention study, we increased the level of PA in 338 children aged 6–8 years at study start, from the Swedish standard of 60 min per week to 200 min per week (40 min daily). The intervention continued in all nine compulsory school years until the students graduated between 2007–2012. All other 689,881 Swedish children who graduated the same years were included as a control group. We registered at graduation eligibility rate for upper secondary school and the final grade score (from 0 to 320 grade points). We also registered the same end points in the 295 students in the index school and in all other 471,926 Swedish students who graduated in 2003–2006, that is, those who graduated before the intervention study started. Before the intervention, academic performance was similar among children in the index school as for all other Swedish boys and girls. With the intervention, the eligibility rate increased for boys in the index school by 7.3 percentage points and the mean grade scores by 13.3 points. This should be compared with a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in eligibility rate and an increase by 2.7 points in grade score in other Swedish boys. No changes were seen for intervention girls, neither in eligibility rates or grade scores. By introducing daily school-based PA in compulsory school, more boys would probably reach the eligibility rate for higher education.

1. Introduction

Lifestyle habits in childhood tend to follow the individual into adulthood [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Therefore, it is important in early years to already influence children to adopt healthy lifestyle habits, such as a physically active lifestyle, good sleep and good dietary habits [ 2 ]. Such habits are supported in school in Sweden, for example throughout repeated general information sessions by school nurses and teachers, not only to the students but also to parents or guardians. Large observational studies have also found that individuals with higher education, such as a university degree, have healthier lifestyles, higher self-esteem, are less likely to suffer from chronic diseases and have lower mortality rates than individuals without such education [ 3 , 4 , 5 ]. Society ought, therefore, to raise the educational level in society.

The proportion of Swedish children who graduate from the 9th and final year of compulsory schooling without eligibility for upper secondary school programs has increased during recent decades [ 6 , 7 ]. The proportion of eligible students was only 86% in 2015, the lowest proportion since 1998 [ 6 ]. The decrease is a paradox since researchers claim that 100% of Swedish students have the potential and capacity to reach the goals required for a passing grade in all school subjects [ 8 ]. School results, with reading performance, mathematics and performance in science as end point variables, have in the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) been reported to decrease in Western countries [ 9 ]. Declining academic school performance should, therefore, be considered an international issue and the question is how to change this. One approach may possibly be to increase the level of physical activity (PA), as high level of PA is associated with superior intellectual performance [ 10 , 11 ]. For example, one study showed that 2 extra weekly school PA classes of 30–45 min including ‘‘play and motion’’ activities was in girls associated with higher likelihood to pass national tests in Swedish (odds ratio 5.7) and Mathematics (odds ratio 3.2) [ 11 ]. Another study showed that among 1271 students from urban Santiago, Chile, 4 hours per week of scheduled exercise was associated with having System for the Assessment of Educational Quality (SIMCE) composite z-scores ≥50th percentile (odds ratio 2.3) and ≥75th percentile (odds ratio 2.1) [ 10 ]. Despite this knowledge, there has been a tendency to reduce physical education (PE) during recent decades in favor of academic subjects [ 12 ]. Some reports have, therefore, postulated that the decrease seen in school results could at least partly be referred to the lower exposure to PA [ 13 , 14 ].

Hypothetically, increasing PE in school may, therefore, reverse the negative trend of school performance [ 13 , 15 ]. Recently this has been shown in a smaller pilot study at a regional level in southern Sweden [ 15 ]. The study found that daily physical activity during the nine compulsory school years was associated with a higher grade score. To our knowledge, no other prospective population-based intervention study has addressed the question by including all children within a country as control cohort. It has also been postulated that boys and girls could respond differently to such an intervention, since boys and girls respond differently to PA during growth [ 10 ] and since boys have a greater potential to improve, with their school results lower compared to girls [ 16 ]. Few studies have addressed this hypothesis and have either included small samples, been short-term, used specific groups or used different surrogate end points for academic performance [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ], possibly explaining the divergent conclusions and lack of consensus on the effect of increased PA on academic school performance. A systematic review from 2018 describes a strong need for high-quality evidence with adequate control groups and end points [ 22 ]. Previous studies have shown increased PE to have positive effects on bone mass, muscle strength and fracture risk [ 4 , 23 ], but a positive effect on academic performance and thereby increased proportion of students eligible for higher education may have an even larger impact on overall health.

Therefore, we conducted a sex specific 9 year, population-based, prospective controlled, PA intervention study during growth. Our aim was to evaluate if daily school PA induced higher eligibility rate and higher final grade score than having school PA 1–2 sessions per week. Our hypothesis was that daily physical activity would be associated with increased eligibility rate and higher final grade score than having 1–2 sessions per, but with more obvious effect in boys than in girls, as boys have lower eligibility and lower grade scores than girls, and by this greater potential for improvement.

2. Materials and Methods

2.1. the malmo pediatric osteoporosis prevention (pop) study.

The Malmo Pediatric Osteoporosis Prevention (POP) study is a prospective controlled PA intervention study that evaluates the effects of increased school-based physical education (PE) on health and school performance. The study design has previously been presented in detail [ 15 , 24 ]. In summary, one school (index school) was invited to increase PE from 1–2 lessons per week to one daily lesson per school week. We chose to conduct the intervention in school since this is the only arena that reaches all children and PE is a compulsory school subject in all Swedish schools, and all children thus had to participate. The children were 6–8 years old at study start [ 24 ] and in this report we followed the children for nine years (the entire compulsory Swedish elementary school) until they were 15–17 years old. At that time, we evaluated school performance by eligibility rate to upper secondary school and overall grade score. The study was approved by the ethics committee of Lund University (LU 453-98; 1998-09-15), conducted according to the Declaration of Helsinki and was registered as a clinical trial (ClinicalTrials.gov. {"type":"clinical-trial","attrs":{"text":"NCT00633828","term_id":"NCT00633828"}} NCT00633828 ). Both oral and written signed consents were collected from parents or guardians and students before study start.

From school start in the index school, we increased the amount of PE per week from the Swedish standard of 60 min to 200 min given as one lesson of 40 min per school day. These lessons were scheduled as all other lessons and were given within the regular school curriculum. The PA included moderate to intense activities from the regular Swedish PE curriculum, such as gymnastics, team sports, dancing, running, jumping, and playing activities. We did not register types of activities included in the school PE. We did not measure the PA level that each student used at the PE lessons, only the duration of the activity. However, all students participated at least with the minimal required level, since all students received a passing grade in the subject PE. The intervention was ongoing in all children who started school during the years 1998–2003 and throughout all nine compulsory school years until they finished 9th grade in the years 2007–2012. The PE classes were led by the regular teachers and followed the regular PE curriculum. This curriculum included activities such as ball games, running, jumping, and playing, on a moderate to vigorous intensity. There were no extra PE classes during weekends or during the 15 weeks of annual school holidays. The school followed the regular national school curriculum in all other subjects.

2.2. Probands

All 234 boys and 190 girls who started grade one in the index school years 1998–2003 were included in the intervention from grade 1. The children (49 boys and 37 girls) who left the index school during the study period (and thus did not complete all nine years of intervention) , in almost all cases due to relocation of the family to another region in the city, another part of the country or abroad, were excluded. Since there at baseline were no differences in age, gender, weight, or body mass index when comparing those who left with those who stayed, the risk of selection bias seems minor (data not shown). Thus, 185 boys and 153 girls remained in the intervention group in this report.

To be able to identify any changes within the index school from the period before the intervention was initiated and after the intervention was initiated (the study period), we registered the same end points in children who started grade one in the index school during years 1994–1997 (175 boys and 181 girls). We excluded 25 boys and 41 girls who left the index school before graduation in 2003–2006, in almost all cases also due to relocation of the family. Thus, 155 boys and 140 girls remained in this group and graduated just before the intervention was initiated.

As controls we used all other Swedish students (not a sample) who finished 9th grade during the years 2003–2006 (n = 471,926; 241,089 boys and 230,837 girls) and the years 2007–2012 (n = 689,881; 353,439 boys and 336,442 girls). The mean duration of PE per school week in Sweden is 60 min, provided in 1–2 lessons. We must acknowledge, that this duration and frequency in controls are the mean values in Swedish schools, and there could during the nine compulsory school year be differences within the same school between the different grades, between different semesters and also between different schools within the same grades.

2.3. End Point Variables—School Grades and Eligibility to Higher Education

Schools in Sweden have to retain grade data for all students for at least 15 years. We collected final elementary grade score card data for each student through the archive of the index school and also registered whether each student was eligible for national upper secondary school or not. The 9th and final elementary school leaving grade report in Sweden includes 16 compulsory school subjects where every subject is graded with the grades Failed (0 points), Passed (10 points), Passed with Distinction (15 points) or Passed with Special Distinction (20 points). The final grade points of these 16 subjects may thus vary from 0 points (p) (no subject with an accepted grade) to 320 p (the highest grade in all subjects). To qualify for national upper secondary school programs the grade Passed is required in each of the subjects Swedish, English and Mathematics. For all other Swedish students the same end point data were retrieved from the Swedish National Agency of Education (Skolverket) [ 16 ].

2.4. Statistics

We used IBM SPSS Statistics® version 20 for statistical analyses (version 20, IBM, New York, NY, USA). Data are reported as absolute numbers (n), percentages (%), percentage points (pp) or means with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). No measurement of dispersion is given for national data as these are not based on a sample but include all Swedish children (true values). Group differences were evaluated by Pearson’s chi-square test for eligibility rate, when comparing students in the intervention school graduating 2007–2012 (with the intervention) with students graduating in the same school 2003–2016 (before the intervention) as well as with all Swedish students graduating 2007–2012. We used Student’s unpaired two sample t -test when comparing for final grade score means in the two samples of students, those graduating in the intervention school 2007–2012 (with the intervention) with students graduating in the same school 2003–2016 (before the intervention). We finally used Student’s unpaired one sample t -test when comparing final grade score means in students in the intervention school graduating 2007–2012 with all Swedish students graduating 2007–2012. We considered p < 0.05 to represent a statistically significant difference.

3.1. Comparison between the Index School and All Other Swedish Children Graduating 2003–2006

Before the intervention was initiated a slightly higher proportion of both boys and girls were eligible for upper secondary school in the index school compared to overall Swedish boys and girls ( Table 1 ).

In boys the overall grade points were similar in the intervention and control groups, while girls in the intervention group had significantly higher grades (+21.8 points) then Swedish girls overall ( Table 2 ).

3.2. Changes within Groups from 2003–2006 to 2007–2012

Before being compared to after the initiation of the intervention, the proportion of boys eligible for upper secondary school increased in the index school by 7.3 (1.4, 13.2) pp. During the same time frame this proportion decreased in Swedish boys overall by 0.8 pp ( Table 1 ). Among boys, the overall grade points also increased in the index school by 13.3 (3.1, 23.5) points and in Swedish overall boys by 2.7 points ( Table 2 ). In girls, the eligibility rate ( Table 1 ) and overall grades ( Table 2 ) were similar in the two periods both in the index school and overall in Sweden.

3.3. Comparison between the Index School and All Other Swedish Children Graduating 2007–2012

With the intervention, both the eligibility rate (+8.3 pp) ( Table 1 ) and the overall grade points (+12.6 points) ( Table 2 ) were higher in boys in the index school compared to all other Swedish children. Among girls, both the eligibility rate (+5.9 pp) ( Table 1 ) and overall grade points (+12.7 points) ( Table 2 ) remained higher in the index school than in all female Swedish students.

It should also be noted that since the proportion of qualified students (both in boys and girls) decreased in Sweden from 2003–2006 to 2007–2012, the difference between the children in the index school and all other Swedish children increased further with the intervention ( Table 1 ).

4. Discussion

In this study we show that boys who had 40 min daily school PA during all nine compulsory school years had higher summarized school grade points and higher qualification rate to upper secondary school than boys who during the nine years had 60 min school PA per week (provided in 1–2 PE lessons). Our results support previous research that suggests that PA is associated with beneficial cognitive achievement [ 5 , 11 , 15 , 25 , 26 , 27 , 28 ]. The association between daily PA and an increase by 7.3 percentage points in qualification rate to higher education between 2003–2006 and 2007–2012 is even more impressive, in the perspective that the eligibility rate in Swedish boys has decreased between these two periods.

Some previous research has suggested that there may be need of high intensity PA to improve academic achievement [ 19 ]. The cited study promoted 90 min/week of moderate to vigorous physically active academic lessons (3.0 to 6.0 metabolic equivalents (METS), ~10 min each) delivered intermittently throughout the school day. Lessons were usually delivered in the classroom, but were also delivered in school locations such as hallways and outdoors [ 19 ]. However, the authors also state in the same article that it is difficult to conclude which exercise dose is required to influence cognitive function and academic achievement [ 19 ]. That PA, even at a lower level, also may be beneficial for academic achievement, is supported by data that infer that daily moderate to intense intense PA with activities within the regular school physical education (PE) curriculum, provided as 40 min daily PE classes, was associated with beneficial academic achievement [ 15 ]. Since we exposed all children within a school (not only those who chose to participate) to PA activities that were possible for every child to take part in, our study indicates that increased PA is a feasible strategy to improve academic school results in boys on a population-based level.

There are numerous potential hypotheses that may explain the association between increased PA and improved school achievement [ 15 , 29 , 30 ]. Some studies infer that PA may have direct positive effects on the nervous system by increasing brain volume, blood flow to the brain, synaptic plasticity, as well as promoting formation of nerve cells, all involved in different aspects of perception, cognition, memory, and attention [ 31 , 32 , 33 , 34 ]. Other studies suggest that PA has positive effects on psychological parameters such as self-esteem, motivation, social engagement, and communication [ 12 ], all of importance for learning outcomes. There are even studies suggesting that inferior motor skills might lead to negative effects in these psychological parameters and delay cognitive development [ 35 , 36 ]. Reports also show an association between higher levels of PA and attention, ability to concentrate in the classroom, and academic achievements [ 29 , 37 ]. We must also emphasize that there could have been other changes, apart from increased PA, during the examination period, changes that we did not register but that still could influence time trends in academic performance. Examples of such changes could be that parents became more aware of the beneficial effects of PA, thereby increasing support to their children to cycle to school and friends, and spend more time with physical activities in their spare time.

Study strengths include the population-based controlled study design, the long-term intervention and the use of endpoint variables relevant to students, parents, teachers and society. Limitations include the low number of individuals in the intervention group, increasing the risk of a type II error, and the absence of comprehensive background data since academic achievement may be affected by other variables such as demographics, motivation, attitudes, extra-curricular activities, access to green spaces, level of spare time PA, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, and parental education. It should be noted that before the intervention was initiated, girls in the intervention school had higher summarized grade points and higher eligibility rate for higher education than Swedish girls in general. The reason for this cannot be explained with our study design, but with this high performance we speculate that the potential to improve was lower in girls than boys. Also, a randomization of the children to the intervention and control groups would have been preferred, but was not accepted by the teachers and parents. Another weakness is that the pre-intervention grades and eligibility to upper secondary school was collected during other years than the data from the intervention cohort. That is, general time trends in grades and eligibility rates not associated with PA may obscure the inferences and our conclusions regarding the effect of daily school physical activity. It would also have been advantageous to have not only data on duration but also the intensity during the PE classes, both on group and individual level, and also how much the children spent on non-organized physical activities.

Finally, we cannot draw any conclusions as regard causality, since there may be a variety of factors associated with the increased physical activity that influenced the school results.

5. Conclusions

We conclude that increasing school PA from 60 min per week to 40 min per school day during the nine compulsory school years in boys is associated with improved grade score and higher eligibility rate to secondary school in grade 9. We found no differences in grades or eligibility rates in girls with the intervention. We recommend schools introduce daily PA.

Regular physical activity can help children and adolescents improve cardiorespiratory fitness, build strong bones and muscles, control weight, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, and reduce the risk of developing health conditions such as: 1

Both quality and quantity of physical education programs are important in schools in forming an all-rounded student.

Schools should incorporate effective physical education programs for all learners on a daily basis to ensure fitness in the students. Young children require creative exercises to avoid boredom, and the trainers should involve the children in coming up with the programs to ensure that their ideas are incorporated in the regimen. This will make the physical exercises fun to carry out.

Apart from participating in the physical education programs, the students need to be taught on the importance of the various exercises so that they inculcate the culture of physical fitness into their life-time fitness programs.

Most health experts recommend an average of one hour of moderate to strenuous exercises for school going children (Marion, 2009). Physical education is an important activity in the public schools and should be allowed to remain an integral part of the curriculum.

Physical education is an important aspect of a child’s comprehensive growth process. The incorporation of the program into the school curriculum will impact positively the school children and help them adopt the activities taught as an integral part of their endeavor to lead a healthy lifestyle.

It would be advisable to incorporate a culture of involvement in physical exercises in young children to avert such disasters as chronic, cardiovascular diseases and disabilities. Many studies have shown that exercise helps greatly reduce unnecessary body fat and a corresponding increase in lean muscle mass which being elements of good health.

As schools aim to achieve high academic success, they should also focus on improving the welfare of the learners by encouraging healthy lifestyles which is achievable through physical activities and healthy diets. Physically fit learners have low incidences of depression, anxiety and also show high levels of self-esteem as well as improved socialization ability in comparison to their peers (Carlie, 2011).

According to research carried out by Active Living Research group, on how policies and environmental factors affect the performance of learners in schools, the less the time is allocated for physical education, the lower the academic performance is recorded. All schools under the study which had comprehensive exercise and physical training programs had a better performance in academics even with less instruction time in class work.

There is a wide range of exercise models learners can use that do not require expensive facilities. For instance, learners can involve in activities such as aerobics, running and playing. The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) needs to be reviewed to ensure learners have adequate time for exercise as opposed to long hours in classwork (University of Michigan Health System, 2011).

The NCLB completely failed to capture the importance of exercise in the general development of school going children. The anticipated improvement in academics has not been realized. This has been attributed to academic fatigue and decreased physical fitness in children among other factors, which always improve concentration capacity.

A controlled exercise program by adults or trained instructors ensures the school going children carry out their exercises in well protected environments and only according to outlined guidelines.

As numerous studies have shown a link between good academic performance and exercising, schools should strive to invest in physical education. Furthermore, many talents in children such as football skills and athletics prowess are discovered through these programs (Stewart, &Mars, 2010).

Apart from the improved academic performance, physical education contributes to developing responsible citizens. Many studies have indicated a drop in cases of indiscipline in children involved in physical fitness programs in comparison to those who do not.

Drug abuse is also rampant among idle students as compared to those who take part in exercise programs. The benefits accrued from physical activity go beyond academic performance and positive results have been recorded in psychosocial component of life, too (University of Michigan Health System, 2011).

The No Child Left behind Act (NCLB) is one of the reasons the physical education program has received little attention. This has in turn resulted in higher rates of obesity in the country with the government spending billions of dollars to counter obesity-related complications in school going children. It is estimated that by 2018, the United States will have spent up to $344 billion to counter obesity related complications.

This constitutes about twenty one percent of the health sector’s budgets. This can be effectively avoided by investing in physical education among the school going children who make up the greatest percentage of obesity cases. Ironically it would only cost $ 500, 000 to reintroduce the physical education programs in schools.

Schools facing budgetary constraints to purchase physical education facilities could easily overcome this challenge by soliciting for funds from well wishers or organize fund raisers (Marion, 2009). The government needs to allocate funds for physical education in schools in addition to constituting legislation that would make physical education as part of the curriculum.

In the United States, deaths arising from poor diet and inactivity hit the 300,000 mark annually. Studies indicated that this problem begins in early childhood and adolescents stages of life. This is the time most people are schooling and, therefore, investing in physical education as an integral part of the curriculum, would have tremendous impact on changing the lifestyles of millions of American citizens.

The government should prioritize in areas of creating awareness among school going children, teachers, parents and guardians to inculcate a culture of healthy living among all people. The government should also involve medical and physical fitness experts in formulating policies and making recommendations regarding physical education programs in schools.

As has been indicated by the united states department of health and human services, physical activeness would lead to lowered expenditures by the government in matters health since the benefits accrued from it reduce the risks of disease incidences.

In one swing, a constant physical activity which is apparently an enjoyable experience has numerous health benefits that only a fool can ignore. Improved strength and endurance, controlled weight, healthy bones and muscles, reduced anxiety and stress as well as improved self-esteem, maintenance of low levels of cholesterol and blood pressure (Marx & Wooley, 1998).

The benefits associated with physical activities surpass the disadvantages. From improved health to improved academic performance and the improved socialization powers, the advantages of physical education are limitless. It is the prerogative of the parents and guardians to ensure that the children involve in responsible physical activities and remove the fear of injuries or time wasting from the element of physical education.

It is wrong to presume that for effective physical fitness, one has to own state of the art facilities as there are many forms of physical exercises. To also assume that for better academic performance, a learner requires long study hours is wrong and as the old adage goes “All work without play makes Jack a dull boy”

The importance of physical education can not be underestimated. There is a need to ensure both quality and quantity of physical education in school programs. The government should also formulate policies and legislation geared towards promotion of physical fitness. Guidelines given by expatriate bodies should be followed since their advice is based on reliable studies.

For instance, the American Heart Association and the National Association of State Boards of Education recommend no less than two hours of physical education each week. The government ought to offer training techniques to instructors and post them to all schools.

In addition it should avail any necessary facilities to ensure successful physical training programs. Owing to the reluctance displayed by both school administrations and the learners themselves in matters of physical education, the government could make it compulsory and examinable.

Josh Shapiro U-Turns Over Old Story He Was Israeli Army Volunteer

Gov. Josh Shapiro once wrote in an op-ed for his college paper that he “was a past volunteer in the Israeli army.” On Friday, he changed his story.

Josh Shapiro abandoned a 31-year-old claim that he “volunteered” for the Israeli military shortly after it resurfaced Friday.

The Pennsylvania governor, who is the favorite to be named Kamala Harris’ running mate as early as this weekend, wrote a newspaper column as a student in 1993 in which he made the claim about helping the Israel Defense Forces.

In the article, entitled “Peace Not Possible,” a 20-year-old Shapiro wrote about the Palestine Liberation Organization’s agreement with Israel at the Oslo accords: “Despite my skepticism as a Jew and a past volunteer in the Israeli army, I strongly hope and pray that this ‘peace plan’ will be successful.”

At the end of the article, his short bio states that he “spent five months studying in Israel and volunteered in the Israeli army.”

The op-ed was dug up by The Philadelphia Inquirer on Friday—and Shapiro quickly disavowed the claim.

The comment drew interest from the Jewish National Syndicate on Friday, which pressed Manuel Bonder, a Shapiro spokesperson, for clarification on “the extent and nature of his (Shapiro’s) service in Israel.”

“While he was in high school, Josh Shapiro was required to do a service project, which he and several classmates completed through a program that took them to a kibbutz in Israel where he worked on a farm and at a fishery,” Bonder told the outlet, and later confirmed with The Daily Beast.

“The program also included volunteering on service projects on an Israeli army base. At no time was he engaged in any military activities,” Bonder added.

The comments come after Shapiro canceled his gubernatorial campaign fundraisers this weekend , with Vice President Kamala Harris expected to announce her VP pick in Philadelphia next Tuesday. A group of Pennsylvania lawmakers came out in support of Shapiro as VP on Friday.

Bonder added that Shapiro has also disavowed his other comments in the student op-ed, including one sentence where he says Palestinians are “too battle-minded to be able to establish a peaceful homeland of their own.”

“Governor Shapiro has built close, meaningful, informative relationships with many Muslim-American, Arab-American, Palestinian Christian and Jewish community leaders all across Pennsylvania,” Bonder told JNS.

Shapiro added in a press conference on Friday that he “was 20,” adding “I have said for years, years before Oct. 7, that I favor a two-state solution—Israelis and Palestinians living peacefully side-by-side, being able to determine their own futures and their own destiny.”

Bonder had no further comment for The Daily Beast.

The "Active Shooter Safety Exercise" at Siegel High Monday prepared first responders for potential tragedies like The Covenant School 2023 killings .

People continue to mourn the deaths of three children and three adults from The Covenant School shootings in Nashville.

The Rutherford County training involved over 500 people two days before Rutherford County Schools started the new 2024-25 year for students Wednesday on a two-hour orientation day. The first full day will be Thursday.

As part of the training Monday at Siegel High in Murfreesboro, Rutherford County Sheriff Mike Fitzhugh read out loud a script to tell reporters that his school resource officers (SROs) led the exercise that involved the simulation of "several injuries and two suspects that are now deceased."

The sheriff read scripted words in response to the simulation as if the tragedy had occurred, during the media gathering.

The sheriff's SROs, Fitzhugh said, teamed with other sheriff's deputies and police officers from Murfreesboro, Middle Tennessee State University, Smyrna, La Vergne, Nashville and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Local paramedics, firefighters and emergency management officials also participated in the training.

Law enforcement blocked Siegel Road and Thompson Lane in front of Siegel High for part of the training and directed the stacked, slow-moving traffic away from responding patrol cars, Emergency Medical Service ambulances and city fire trucks.

"While this is an exercise, this training shows our countywide commitment to protect our precious children and school staffs," said Fitzhugh, who has served as sheriff since January 2017 .

Rutherford County Schools has two safety weeks to focus on being prepared for emergencies in the fall and spring, and has drills throughout the year, district spokesman James Evans said.

Monday's event was one of the largest, Evans said.

Evans also spoke to reporters from behind a portable lectern as if speaking about a real shooting as part of the training. Other local public information officers participated, including sheriff's spokeswoman Lisa Marchesoni.

The gathering took place under a picnic pavilion on the grounds of Northside Baptist Church, which is across Siegel Road from the high school that serves about 1,800 students on Murfreesboro's north side. Evans after the training event said that a press conference following a real school shooting would have occurred farther from the campus.

Evans mentioned how SROs in Rutherford County have been protecting students, teachers and other employees since 1993.

The county has at least one SRO assigned to each of the district's 51 schools, and the larger campuses have at least two, said Marchesoni, the sheriff's spokeswoman.

Evans: School safety has improved

Evans suggested that part of responding to violence will include communicating with parents throughout the day, including any plan to reunify them with their children at reunification sites under the direction of law enforcement.

A school following a shooting would be closed the next day during the law enforcement investigation, Evans said.

The reenactors for the training included drama students, Evans said.

"We're going to learn a lot from this," Evans said. "We're already talking about areas where we can improve, areas we do great at. It's just going to be really beneficial. The ultimate goal is to help students stay safe and to keep our learning environment secure."

The school shootings throughout the country in recent years have led to greater efforts, including buzzard systems, window film, controlled access and security cameras throughout campus buildings, Evans said.

"Our schools are so much better secured than they were 10, 15 years ago," Evans said. "Everyone has really got an eye toward safety because of the tragedies that we've seen locally with what happened in Nashville and then also in other states."

5 takeaways by a longtime NABJ member from Trump’s appearance before Black journalists

CHICAGO — At first, it felt like watching a slow-motion car crash.

I wasn’t actually in the room when Donald Trump brought his toxic rhetoric to the National Association of Black Journalists national convention Wednesday. But I was nearly there, sitting in a taxicab headed from the airport to the conference at the Hilton Chicago downtown, watching a livestream video as the former president insulted a roomful of Black journalists after ABC’s Rachel Scott opened with a tough question.

Scott asked about several instances where Trump said racist things, from falsely insisting Barack Obama wasn’t born in America to calling Black journalists losers and racist. Trump’s response was a torrent of barely connected ideas, including a complaint that NABJ brought him to Chicago under “false pretenses” because they didn’t work out details to get Vice President Kamala Harris to make a similar, in-person appearance at the convention.

“I have been the best president for the Black population since Abraham Lincoln,” Trump said, drawing scoffs from the crowd. “That is my answer.”

In a flash, it felt like all the predictions critics made of inviting Trump to address Black journalists came true. He was offering his usual torrent of accusations, assertions and insults — some outrageous, most inflated — creating word salad that moderators struggled to fact-check in the moment, raising fears that he owned the organization at its own conference.

As a 34-year member of NABJ, I had my own qualms. Not about inviting Trump — the group has invited the major party candidates for president to its national conferences for many years, to platform questions on issues involving people of color. But, among other things, I objected to seeing an anchor from the right-leaning cable channel Fox News among the three people questioning Trump. (Though I have volunteered for decades as chair of the NABJ’s Media Monitoring Committee, I had nothing to do with organizing Trump’s appearance.)

And I worried about the optics of a Black journalists group offering a prime panel spot to a politician who had attacked Black journalists, while the Black and Asian woman also running for president would not appear.

But, after some reflection and talking with other members at the conference, I think the actual impact of Trump’s appearance is more nuanced. Here’s my five takeaways from what happened.

Trump’s appearance pushed NABJ to face tension between its status as a journalism organization and an advocate for fair treatment of Black journalists and, by extension, Black people.

This is an idea I heard from a friend and fellow journalist/NABJ member, and it rings true. As journalists, we jump at the chance to ask direct questions of a former president who has often stoked racial fears, from birtherism attacks against Obama and Harris to false claims about undocumented immigrants.

But our website also notes that NABJ “advocates on behalf of Black journalists and media professionals,” honoring those who provide “balanced coverage of the Black community and society at large.” I’ve always felt that if the media industry can give Black journalists a fair shot, we can help provide more accurate, less prejudiced coverage of everything — particularly issues involving marginalized groups.

That’s why some NABJ members chafed at platforming Trump, with his long history of racist statements, at a conference aimed at reducing the prejudice Black journalists face every day. But I think part of reaching NABJ’s goals involves Black journalists learning how to confront racist ideas; trying to get Trump to explain himself in front of a group of Black media professionals seems pretty in line with that mission.

NABJ President Ken Lemon asserted during the conference’s opening ceremonies later that day that the group is, at its core, a journalism organization. On this day, at least, it’s obvious the journalism side took precedence.

If the goal was to get Trump to reveal his terrible takes on race to the world — mission accomplished.

Lots of media outlets focused on his awful comments on how Harris “suddenly” became Black in his eyes. Trump tried the classic maneuver of turning an opponent’s advantage against them, acting as if the embrace of Harris as a history-making Black and Asian woman in politics was the result of some cynical marketing spin.

“I did not know she was Black until a couple of years ago when she happened to turn Black,” he said. “And now she wants to be known as Black. Is she Indian, or is she Black?”

True enough, the questioners struggled to pin Trump down on exactly why he talks about race the way he does. Or how he can believe such ideas aren’t racist.

Still, what Trump did say mostly made him look old-fashioned and prejudiced. Will it appeal to his base? Perhaps, but the moment didn’t feel like a strong, confident leader puncturing racial hypocrisy.

It seemed more like the wandering statements of someone who just doesn’t understand America’s modern melting pot of ethnicities.

Sometimes, with Trump, there is value in having an interviewer on hand who he trusts.

Much as I disliked seeing an anchor from a news organization that has won the NABJ’s Thumbs Down Award twice on the panel, Fox News’ Harris Faulkner did get Trump to open up a bit with less-pointed but telling questions.

In particular, when Trump said he thought the vice presidential candidates had “virtually no impact” on election results, he seemed to put into perspective his relationship with JD Vance while belittling the guy he is supposed to spend months alongside in a tight campaign.

There are other journalists from less partisan news outlets who likely could have achieved the same moment. But there is value in having one journalist in the mix who doesn’t immediately raise Trump’s defenses and might provoke more telling responses.

Trump is a chaos agent who divides people and divides NABJ

In the end, I was less concerned about how NABJ looked to the world in the wake of Trump’s visit than how it deals with itself.

As news of the panel spread, many journalists spoke out passionately against having him at the conference, reasoning that any appearance would likely benefit him more than the group, platforming his terrible rhetoric about racial issues. Well-known figures like Roland Martin and April Ryan — who Trump criticized when he was president — spoke out; Washington Post columnist Karen Attiah quit her post as convention co-chair amid the controversy.

There are also tough questions about why the group couldn’t work out an arrangement to have Harris appear at the convention virtually, given that she was flying to Houston for the funeral of friend and sorority sister Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Considering the intense emotions at hand over the coming election and widespread skepticism about coverage decisions by journalists, there’s lots of criticism and bruising assumptions about what happened here.

This is the kind of division that can hobble NABJ in the future as people cancel memberships, decline to volunteer, hold back donations and continue to criticize the group’s direction. I expect the group’s membership meeting, scheduled for Saturday morning, will draw lots of pointed feedback from those who still question the wisdom of welcoming the former president here.

As someone who can attribute almost every major job I’ve gotten to connections made at an NABJ convention, this heightened squabbling is what I fear most — a distraction at a time when job losses and cutbacks in media have made times even more challenging for journalists of color.

In a way, NABJ played Trump’s game — and may have had some success

Another friend noted that Trump — who commands loyalty from GOP voters — has always valued dominating the news cycle, regardless of whether the stories are complimentary. His NABJ appearance ensured everything from the network evening news programs to The Daily Show focused on his comments here rather than Harris’ increasingly energized campaign.

As I saw criticism build over Trump’s visit, I wondered if NABJ wasn’t like a scrappy dog who finally caught a passing car — after years of GOP candidates declining invitations, finally one of the most divisive Republicans in modern politics was accepted. And the consequences of hosting him — particularly when Harris would not appear at the convention — loomed large.

But in the end, NABJ also landed at the top of the news cycle at a time when — as announced by the group during its opening ceremony — the convention drew the largest number of attendees in its history, over 4,000.

Yes, many supporters felt, as I did initially, that the appearance was a train wreck. But NABJ also showed the world three Black female journalists questioning Trump on some of his most provocative statements on race, with telling answers.

In a world where any publicity can be good publicity, that just might be enough.

An Olympics Scene Draws Scorn. Did It Really Parody ‘The Last Supper’?

Some church leaders and politicians have condemned the performance from the opening ceremony for mocking Christianity. Art historians are divided.

A performance during the Paris Olympics’ opening ceremony on Friday has drawn criticism from church leaders and conservative politicians for a perceived likeness to Leonardo da Vinci’s depiction of a biblical scene in “The Last Supper,” with some calling it a “mockery” of Christianity.

The event’s planners and organizers have denied that the sequence was inspired by “The Last Supper,” or that it intended to mock or offend.

In the performance broadcast during the ceremony, a woman wearing a silver, halo-like headdress stood at the center of a long table, with drag queens posing on either side of her. Later, at the same table, a giant cloche lifted, revealing a man, nearly naked and painted blue, on a dinner plate surrounded by fruit. He broke into a song as, behind him, the drag queens danced.

The tableaux drew condemnation among people who saw the images as a parody of “The Last Supper,” the New Testament scene depicted in da Vinci’s painting by the same name. The French Bishops’ Conference, which represents the country’s Catholic bishops, said in a statement that the opening ceremony included “scenes of mockery and derision of Christianity,” and an influential American Catholic, Bishop Robert Barron of Minnesota, called it a “gross mockery.”

The performance at the opening ceremony, which took place on and along the Seine on Friday, also prompted a Mississippi-based telecommunications provider, C Spire, to announce that it would pull its advertisements from Olympics broadcasts. Speaker Mike Johnson described the scene as “shocking and insulting to Christian people.”

The opening ceremony’s artistic director, Thomas Jolly, said at the Games’ daily news conference on Saturday that the event was not meant to “be subversive, or shock people, or mock people.” On Sunday, Anne Descamps, the Paris 2024 spokeswoman, said at the daily news conference, “If people have taken any offense, we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

Olympics gymnastics highlights: Shinnosuke Oka wins gold, US men finish outside top 10

PARIS — Forty-eight hours after helping lead Team USA to a historic bronze medal in the team competition, Paul Juda and Frederick Richard placed 14th and 15th, respectively, in the individual all-around final Wednesday night — their last event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Richard, 20, got off to a shaky start with a fall on pommel horse in his first rotation and was unable to match some of the monster scores he put up in the team final, where the U.S. won its first Olympic medal since 2008. Juda was solid across the board but simply didn't have the difficulty in his routines to be in the mix for a medal.

The race for gold ultimately came down to the final rotation, with several gymnasts from China, Japan and Great Britain all jockeying for the podium. 

Ultimately, it was Shinnosuke Oka of Japan who emerged with gold, giving Japan its fourth consecutive Olympic gold medal in this event. Boheng Zhang and Ruoteng Xiao of China earned silver and bronze, respectively.

Japan's Daiki Hashimoto, the reigning world all-around champion, placed sixth.

Richard, who competes collegiately at the University of Michigan, needed to be pretty close to perfect or benefit from mistakes Wednesday to make a run at the podium, simply because the competitors from China and Japan had more difficulty in their routines. He sneaked onto the podium at the end of the all-around competition at the 2023 world championships, becoming the first American man to medal at worlds since Jonathan Horton in 2010. But he was unable to replicate that feat in Paris.

Juda had said over the weekend that he was thrilled just to have made it to the all-around final. At various points over the past year, it was unclear whether he would even make the Olympic team. But he ended up being a key contributor.

The U.S. has not medaled in the men's all-around since the 2012 London Games, when Danell Leyva took home bronze. And it has not won an apparatus medal on the men's side since 2016, when Leyva won a pair of silvers.

Stephen Nedoroscik is the only men's gymnast left to compete in Paris for Team USA; He'll be in the eight-man pommel horse final Saturday.

Simone Biles and Suni Lee will compete for the U.S. in the women's all-around final Thursday night.

Olympic gymnastics results: Japan's Shinnosuke Oka wins gold

Japan's Shinnosuke Oka won gold in the men's all-around final, scoring an 86.832 and finishing 0.233 ahead of China's Zhang Boheng in second and 0.468 ahead of China's Xiao Ruoteng in third. It is the fourth straight gold for the Japanese in the all-around final.

  • Thursday, Aug. 1: The women’s all-around final is at 12:15 p.m. ET. Simone Biles and Suni Lee are competing in the all-around final for the Americans .

Frederick Richard, Paul Juda on fifth rotation

Frederick Richard has moved up to 12th after a strong high bar routine, though his score of 14.400 wasn't quite as high as his score in the team final Monday night. He'll wrap up the night on floor. Paul Juda, who is in 16th, will conclude on pommel horse.

The men's all-around final looks like it's going to come down to the wire. With just one rotation to go, there are now six men at the top separated by 1.1 points or less, each of them with a shot at earning an Olympic medal. Shinnosuke Oka of Japan is back in first, followed by Ruoteng Xiao and Boheng Zhang of China. Here are the top three in the standings after five rotations.

Paul Juda, Frederick Richard on fourth rotation

In the fourth rotation, Paul Juda scored a 13.766 on high bar. Frederick Richard scored a 14.133 parallel bars this rotation. The metaphorical ship has probably sailed for the Americans' hopes of earning a medal. Juda and Richard are sitting tied for 18th and 20th, respectively, with just two rotations remaining.

Olympic gymnastics results: Fourth rotation

For all the hype entering Wednesday about China and Japan, it is actually the two Ukrainians — Oleg Verniaiev and Illia Kovtun — who are sitting in first and second, respectively, through four rotations. 

Finishing with one, if not two, gymnasts on the podium would of course be incredibly meaningful for Ukraine, which brought a delegation of around 140 athletes to the Paris Olympics amid its war with Russian. Ukraine has so far just won a single bronze medal, in fencing. Here are the top three in the standings after four rotations.

Frederick Richard, Paul Juda after three rotations

After falling on pommel horse, Frederick Richard has actually performed better than he did in qualifying on both still rings and vault. But he still has a long way to go if he's going to get back in the picture for a medal. Richard is sitting 22nd in the 24-man field, about 2.5 points behind leader Shinnosuke Oka of Japan. He's also slightly behind U.S. teammate Paul Juda, who is sitting in 17th after recording a 13.866 on parallel bars. 

Olympic gymnastics results: Third rotation

Two gymnasts from Ukraine and two from China occupy the second through fifth spots, while reigning world champion Daiki Hashimoto of Japan is in 18th at the halfway point.

Brody Malone, Asher Hong, Stephen Nedoroscik supporting teammates at all-around final

Brody Malone, three-time U.S. champion, missed out on tonight's event after a rough performance in qualifying. But he's on the floor helping out Frederick Richard and Paul Juda. Before Richard went on pommel horse, Malone brought the chalk bag onto the podium and helped adjust the height of the horse. Between rotations, he helped lug everyone's bags to the next event.  Meanwhile, Asher Hong and Stephen Nedoroscik are watching from the stands.

While it might seem unusual, other gymnasts will often help their teammates during all-around and event finals. The Netherlands' Loran De Munck, for example, was helping his teammate, Frank Rijken.

Frederick Richard on still rings, Paul Juda on vault

As for the Americans, Frederick Richard followed up his fall on pommel horse with a solid routine on rings, while Paul Juda lost some points on his vault for taking a sideways hop out of the landing zone. They'll both by sitting in the back of the pack by the end of the second rotation.

Olympic gymnastics results: Second rotation

Two of the favorites to win gold tonight, Boheng Zhang of China and Daishi Hakimoto of Japan, have both already had shocking mistakes in the early stages of the competition.

Zhang, who topped the leaderboard in qualifying, came up short on a tumbling pass on floor and leaned forward onto his head in his first rotation. Then, minuteslater, Hakimoto fell off the pommel horse after stalling on a handstand. Their mistakes left the door open for 20-year-old Shinnosuke Oka of Japan to move into the lead, at least for now.

Frederick Richard falls off pommel horse

Of the two Americans in the field tonight, reigning world bronze medalist Frederick Richard entered with the best chance of winning an all-around medal. But his start on pommel horse won't help. Richard, 20, appeared off balance as soon as he mounted the apparatus and then fell off it altogether when his hand slipped during a flare. While there's still a lot of gymnastics to go, his score of 12.733 left him sitting 23rd out of 24 gymnasts after the first rotation.

Who is last US man to win an Olympic all-around medal? 

That would be Danell Leyva, who won a bronze at the 2012 Olympics in London. He was just the third American man to win an all-around medal at the Olympics, following Peter Vidmar's silver in 1984 and Paul Hamm's gold in 2004. 

The U.S. men haven't had much more success in the all-around at the world championships. Frederick Richard's bronze last year was the first since 2010, when Jonathan Horton also won a bronze. The only other two all-around medals by U.S. men at the world championships were by Paul Hamm, who won gold in 2003, and Kurt Thomas, the silver medalist in 1979. 

How does Olympic gymnastics scoring work?

A gymnastics routine gets two scores: One for difficulty, also known as the D score or start value, and one for execution. Every gymnastics skill has a numerical value, and the D score is the sum total of the skills in a routine. The execution score, or E score, reflects how well the skills were done. A gymnast starts with a 10.0, and deductions for flaws and form errors are taken from there. Add the D and E scores together, and that’s your total for an apparatus. (Vault scores will always be higher because it’s a single skill.)

For years, the U.S. men’s gymnastics teams would insist they were within striking distance of the podium, that they were thisclose to winning a medal. But if the Americans ever wanted a medal, they were going to have to do more than talk.

“We had to trust the process,” said Sam Mikulak, a three-time Olympian who now coaches  Brody Malone  and  Stephen Nedoroscik . “The first couple of years were rough.”
