8 Parts of Speech You have already learned nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Let’s see if you are familiar with the other four parts of speech:prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, and interjections. In your notebooks make a list of the following for your MadLib. The number next to the part of speech indicates how many of each word you need. Plural Noun – 1 Interjection – 2 Past tense verb – 2 Preposition - 1 Adverb – 2 Conjunction - 2 Adjective – 3 Pronoun - 3 Proper Noun – 1

8 Parts of Speech You have already learned nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. Let’s see if you are familiar with the other four parts of speech: prepositions, conjunctions, pronouns, and interjections. Under the Grammar tab of your notebook, copy down the MadLib below, filling in the words you pre-selected. (Interjection!) I cannot believe that my first week of high school is behind me, (conjunction) the week (past tense verb) by so (adverb). My best friend (proper noun) and (pronoun) got into a (adjective) fight, (conjunction) everything turned out alright. Lunch was a (noun). The table of (plural noun) (preposition) us were talking really (adverb) about all the (adjective) boys on campus, but (pronoun) just (past tense verb) them. Overall, it was a (adjective) week. (Interjection!)

So, what is the function of those different parts of speech? Replace a noun (he, she, it, they…) Pronouns Interjections Short exclamation (Ouch! Hi, my name is Alex. Well, I’m not sure.) Conjunctions Prepositions Used to join clauses, sentences or words together (and, or, but, so, because…) Links a noun to another word (to, at, on, from, of…)
