Increasing bandwidth demands in the data center, due to the evolution of IoT and Cloud Computing, has led to new 112 Gb/s electrical interface standards for wireline communication being developed. PAM4 is the chosen signalling method and maintains compatibility with existing 56 Gb/s standards. In this paper, the design and implementation of a 112 Gb/s PAM4 wireline receiver test-chip implemented in FinFET technology will be presented. The receiver’s architecture consists of a four-stage continuous-time linear equalizer (CTLE), a peaking capacitance buffer, a 56 GSa/s time-interleaved 7-bit SAR ADC, DSP, and adaptation loops.

Combustion Visualisation Monitoring Using High Speed Imaging

--> Zheng, Lukai (2018) Combustion Visualisation Monitoring Using High Speed Imaging. PhD thesis, University of Sheffield.

Optical visualisation of flames plays an important role in the in-depth understanding of complex combustion phenomena. In particular, a high-speed camera can provide nonintrusive and continuous monitoring of flames. Through the recorded images, further analysis on colour, temperature, flame dynamics, and a variety of other information can be achieved, which is essential for physical study and numerical modelling. The main objectives of the present work are to apply visualisation monitoring to different combustion conditions, quantitatively analyse the combustion performance, and integrate these analyses with their inherent nature to achieve physical insights into these combustion phenomena. Overall, this work improves the understanding of combustion, and contributes towards the development of tools for flame performance analysis and evaluation. These benefits could be crucial for future fuels and engines.

Welcome to the Zijian Zheng’s research group in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology (ABCT) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University!

The general research interest of Zheng Group is controlling the architecture on surfaces at the molecular and nanometer scales. We focus on tailoring the surface properties and functionalities by manipulating the surface topography and chemistry. The approaches are multidisciplinary, involving expertise and knowledge in chemistry, materials science, physics, electric engineering, biochemistry, and textile. In particular, we aim to pursue our research in the following areas:

Checklist for paper writing : I have prepared a detailed checklist to help science/engineering graduate students improving their paper writing.

To prospective PhD students: Please read this document if you are thinking about pursuing a PhD degree. The skill sets required for PhD research are very different from those required for undergraduate study. In undergraduate study, a student learns existing knowledge that were created by others (probably a few hundred years ago). A PhD student is expected to create new knowledge . A student doesn't have to be super smart or to have a perfect GPA in order to be an excellent PhD student, but he/she may need to be self-motivated for scientific research, curious about unknown/new fields, open-minded to different opinions, and persistent when facing research challenges (or even failures).

R ESEARCH INTERESTS

We work at the intersection of computational data science (e.g., uncertainty quantification, tensor computation, scientific machine learning) and hardware systems. Currently we focus on two broad directions:

Our research is supported by both government funding agencies (e.g., NSF, DOE) and industries (e.g., Meta, Intel, Amazon and Samsung). We are actively collaborating with industrial research teams (e.g., Meta, Intel, Cadence, HP, Amazon, and NVIDIA) to make practical impact.
