Successful schools begin by engaging students and making sure they come to school regularly. That may seem obvious. What’s less obvious is that the consequences of low attendance are serious for all children and for the community, not just the students who miss school.

School attendance data on GreatSchools.org, which comes from the state Department of Education, provides parents and the community baseline information on the quality of a school. You can locate each school’s attendance data on their GreatSchools.org school profile page in the Equity section, under Race/Ethnicity, then click on the Discipline & attendance tab. What does the attendance rate tell you about a school?

The attendance rate tells you the average percentage of students attending school each day in the given year, as reported by the state Department of Education. (Some states report this attendance rate as the percentage of students with unexcused absences.) You can also see the state average for the attendance rate and compare how your school stacks up. In some states, you will see the mobility rate (which means the percentage of students who transfer out of the school). Most schools have high attendance rates. If your school’s attendance rate is below the state average, the school may face challenges in getting students to come to school regularly. Ask the principal why the attendance rate is lower than the state average and what the school is doing to address this issue.

How important is attendance for your child?

The attendance rate is important because students are more likely to succeed in academics when they attend school consistently. It’s difficult for the teacher and the class to build their skills and progress if a large number of students are frequently absent. In addition to falling behind in academics, students who are not in school on a regular basis are more likely to get into trouble with the law and cause problems in their communities.

A 2019 report by physicians at Council on School Health published in Pediatrics states: “Chronic school absenteeism, starting as early as preschool and kindergarten, puts students at risk for poor school performance and school dropout.” An earlier 2008 study conducted by the Rodel Community Scholars at Arizona State University that tracked students from kindergarten through high school found the same pattern: high school dropout patterns were linked with poor attendance, beginning in kindergarten. Gregory Hickman, director of the Rodel Community Scholars program and former director of the Arizona Dropout Initiative, notes they discovered that as early as kindergarten, behavioral differences are apparent between children who go on to graduate and those who drop out, with dropouts missing an average of 124 days of school by eighth grade. In their report, researchers wrote: “Educators should begin developing strategies to improve student attendance from as early as kindergarten.”

The U.S. Department of Education categorizes “chronic” absence as missing 15 or more days in a school year. Some organizations, researchers, and an increasing number of states define chronic as missing 10 percent of the school year (approximately 18 days). Estimates of the number of chronically absent students in the U.S. vary from 13 percent to 16 percent .

School budgets may suffer when students don’t attend. In many states, school budgets are based on the average daily attendance at a school. If many students enrolled at a school fail to consistently attend, the school has less money to pay for essential classroom needs.

How can schools increase their attendance rate?

According to the National Center for Student Engagement , schools are most effective in achieving high attendance rates when parents, school leaders, and community members work together to focus on reducing absences and truancy, and keeping kids in schools. The center provides 10 tips for schools and communities to improve their attendance rates . Among them:

• Make the school a place where parents/guardians and students feel welcome and respected. Create an environment that enables students to feel successful in something — no matter how small.
• Reward and recognize good attendance (not just “perfect” attendance).
• Forge a relationship with local businesses so that they cooperate in encouraging students to go to school and not congregate at businesses during school hours.
• Ask teachers to phone parents when their children are not in school to let them know the school is concerned.
• Talk to students about why they were gone and let them know they were missed.

School attendance matters. It is arguably one of the most important indicators of school success. You cannot learn what you are not there to learn. Students who attend school regularly improve their chances of being academically successful. There are obvious exceptions to both sides of the rule. There are a few students deemed academically successful who also have attendance issues and a few students who struggle academically who are always present. However, in most cases, strong attendance correlates with academic success, and poor attendance correlates with academic struggles.

To understand the importance of attendance and the influence the lack thereof has, we must first define what constitutes both satisfactory and poor attendance.  Attendance Works , a non-profit dedicated to improving school attendance, has categorized school attendance into three distinct categories. Students who have 9 or fewer absences are satisfactory. Those with 10-17 absences are exhibiting warning signs for potential attendance issues.  Students with 18 or more absences have a clear cut chronic attendance issue. These numbers are based on the traditional 180-day school calendar.

Teachers and administrators will agree that the students who need to be at school the most are the ones that are seemingly seldom there. Poor attendance creates significant learning gaps. Even if students complete the make-up work, they most likely will not learn and retain the information as well as if they had been there.

Make-up work can pile up very quickly. When students return from an extended hiatus, they not only have to complete the make-up work, but they also have to contend with their regular classroom assignments. Students often make the decision to rush through or completely ignore the make-up work so that they can keep pace with their regular class studies.  Doing this naturally creates a learning gap and causes the student’s grades to drop. Over time, this learning gap increases to the point where it becomes nearly impossible to close.

Chronic absenteeism will lead to frustration for the student. The more they miss, the more difficult it becomes to catch up. Eventually, the student gives up altogether putting them on a path towards being a high school dropout. Chronic absenteeism is a key indicator that a student will drop out. This makes it even more critical to find early intervention strategies to prevent attendance from ever becoming an issue.

The amount of schooling missed can quickly add up. Students who enter school at kindergarten and miss an average of 10 days per year until they graduate high school will miss 140 days. According to the definition above, this student would not have an attendance problem. However, all together that student would miss nearly an entire year of school when you add everything together. Now compare that student with another student who has a chronic attendance issue and misses an average of 25 days a year. The student with a chronic attendance issue has 350 missed days or almost two entire years. It is no wonder that those who have attendance issues are almost always further behind academically than their peers who have satisfactory attendance.

Strategies to Improve School Attendance

Improving school attendance can prove to be a difficult endeavor.  Schools often have very little direct control in this area. Most of the responsibility falls on the student’s parents or guardians, especially the elementary aged ones.  Many parents simply do not understand how important attendance is. They do not realize how quickly missing even a day a week can add up. Furthermore, they do not understand the unspoken message that they are relaying to their children by allowing them to miss school regularly.  Finally, they do not understand that they are not only setting their children up to fail in school, but also in life.

For these reasons, it is essential that elementary schools in particular focus on educating parents on the value of attendance.  Unfortunately, most schools operate under the assumption that all parents already understand how important attendance is, but that those whose children have a chronic attendance issue are simply ignoring it or do not value education. The truth is that most parents want what is best for their children, but have not learned or been taught what that is. Schools must invest a significant amount of their resources to educate their local community adequately on the importance of attendance.

Regular attendance should play a part in the daily anthem of a school and a critical role in defining the culture of a school. The fact is that every school has an attendance policy . In most cases, that policy is only punitive in nature meaning that it simply provides parents with an ultimatum that essentially says “get your child to school or else.”  Those policies, while effective for a few, will not deter many for whom it has become easier to skip school than it is to attend. For those, you have to show them and prove to them that attending school on a regular basis will help lead to a brighter future.

Schools should be challenged to develop attendance policies and programs that are more preventive in nature than they are punitive. This begins with getting to the root of the attendance issues on an individualized level. School officials must be willing to sit down with parents and listen to their reasons for why their children are absent without being judgmental. This allows the school to form a partnership with the parent wherein they can develop an individualized plan for improving attendance, a support system for follow through, and a connection to outside resources if necessary.

This approach will not be easy. It will take a lot of time and resources. However, it is an investment that we should be willing to make based on how important we know attendance to be.  Our goal should be to get every child to school so that the effective teachers we have in place can do their jobs. When that happens, the quality of our school systems will improve significantly .

Why Is School Attendance Important? The Effects of Chronic Absenteeism

Chronic absenteeism is pervasive: as many as one in six students in the United States miss enough school to be considered chronically absent, according to the US Department of Education. The negative effects of absenteeism on a student’s education can be profound, and they often carry into adulthood.

The harmful impact of chronic absenteeism threatens all students, but the risks are not borne equally. Students of color, students who live in poverty, and students with chronic health conditions or disabilities all experience disproportionately high absence rates.

Examining the causes of absenteeism and the effects it has on school performance, and ultimately life outcomes, provides a deeper understanding of why school attendance is so important.

Why Is School Attendance Important?

School attendance is a powerful predictor of student outcomes. In fact, irregular attendance can be a better predictor of whether students will drop out of school before graduation than test scores, according to the US Department of Education.

The correlation between attendance and dropout rates has important ramifications that go beyond the classroom. Compared to their peers who graduate, students who fail to complete their high school education are more likely to live in poverty, suffer poor health, and become involved in the criminal justice system.

Defining and Assessing Chronic Absenteeism in Schools

Chronic absenteeism is widely defined as missing 10 percent or more of a school year. Schools generally recognize three categories of absences:

• Excused absences are those with a valid reason and that have been communicated to the school by a parent. Student illness or other medical conditions are the most common types of excused absence; other reasons include religious observances, medical appointments, and family emergencies.
• Unexcused absences, or truancy , occur when students miss school without a valid reason. Examples include deliberately skipping school as well as missing school for reasons deemed invalid by the school, such as oversleeping or missing the bus.
• Disciplinary absences are a result of school suspension.

While these categories of absences are relatively consistent from one institution to another, school attendance policies and practices vary. For example, some school policies make little or no distinction between excused and unexcused absences. Similarly, school suspensions may be counted as absences by some school districts but not by others.

Such discrepancies speak to the challenge of collecting accurate and consistent attendance data, which is critical for education researchers and policymakers. Two sources of US public school attendance data––the Civil Rights Data Collection and attendance reporting under the Every Student Succeeds Act of 2015––merit closer examination.

Civil Rights Data Collection

Arguably the most important study of absenteeism data collected in the US was the Civil Rights Data Collection (CRDC), a biennial report from the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) division. The first CRDC study to collect absenteeism data was conducted during the 2013-2014 school year and released in 2016. It marked the first national study of chronic absences and provided hard evidence of the negative effects of chronic absenteeism.

Chronic absenteeism data is no longer collected by OCR (the Education Department continues to collect absence data through its EdFacts Division), but information collected about absences as part of the 2018 CRDC (2015-2016 school year data) continues to serve as a valuable resource for researchers and policymakers studying absenteeism.

The shift from OCR-collected data to EdFacts also marked an important change to attendance data: the definition of chronic absenteeism went from missing at least 15 days of school in a year to missing 10 percent or more of a school year. This change helps to standardize the metric used by federal, state, and local education authorities.

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) of 2015, a reauthorization of the landmark Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965, included important requirements for school absenteeism reporting. The law requires all states to include chronic absence data in their school report cards.

It also requires states to select five metrics by which to measure performance in their schools; four of the performance indicators must be focused on academic achievement, but the fifth is a nonacademic metric. Chronic absenteeism was chosen as the nonacademic indicator by 36 states and the District of Columbia.

Such a broad adoption of absenteeism as a performance indicator reflects growing recognition of the importance of attendance. It also lays the groundwork for addressing the problem. ESSA state plans include strategies for using federal funds to improve attendance through such measures as improved health services, greater family engagement, and teacher training.

School Attendance Facts

Even a cursory look at national attendance data reveals that the problem is widespread. The following attendance facts come from the CRDC that was released in 2018:

• More than seven million students in the US––16 percent of the student population––missed 15 or more days of school.
• Approximately 800 school districts reported more than 30 percent of their students missed at least three weeks of school.
• Chronic absenteeism rates are highest in high schools, where about one in five students is chronically absent.
• More than 20 percent of students were chronically absent in six states (Alaska, Nevada, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Washington) and the District of Columbia.
• Every state had schools that reported 10 percent or more of students as chronically absent.

Attendance Inequalities

A survey of national absenteeism data also highlights inequalities across school districts and among students. Many of the factors that are known to contribute to chronic absenteeism––limited transportation, poor health, lack of safety––are more prevalent in marginalized communities and areas of poverty.

The 2018 CRDC shows significant differences in the rates of absenteeism experienced by different races and ethnicities. Students of color generally have higher absenteeism than their white counterparts:

• White students, 14.5 percent
• Black students, 20.5 percent
• Hispanic students, 17 percent
• American Indian students, 26 percent

Asian students are the only nonwhite student population with an absenteeism rate, 8.6 percent, that is lower than that of white students.

While a clear correlation between poverty and absenteeism exists on average, not all high-poverty schools have high chronic absence rates. Some have been successful in helping families overcome attendance challenges by using prevention-oriented approaches, according to Attendance Works, an initiative that advocates for improved absence data collection and policy.

One prevention-oriented program that has proven effective is the formation of “attendance teams,” cross-functional groups that work to improve school attendance by monitoring attendance data, identifying causes for absenteeism, and coordinating prevention and support strategies. Typically led by a principal, an attendance team can include teachers, school nurses, guidance counselors, social workers, parent representatives, and other stakeholders.

The success of such strategies, particularly within schools that are at high risk for chronic absenteeism, underscores the importance of identifying schools at risk for high absence rates and taking steps to address the problem.

Causes of Poor School Attendance

Many factors are associated with poor school attendance:

• Physical health issues . Health conditions such as asthma, influenza, diabetes, tooth decay, and obesity are all associated with higher rates of student absenteeism. Nearly 10 percent of children aged four to14 are diagnosed with asthma, a leading cause of school absenteeism. Asthma accounts for a third of all days of missed instruction, according to Attendance Works.
• Bullying . Approximately 20 percent of students in the US aged 12 to 18 experience bullying. Bullying can include emotional abuse (name-calling, insults, teasing), the threat of harm or actual physical abuse (being pushed, tripped, or beaten), destruction of property, and ostracization (exclusion, being made the subject of rumors or lies). In the US, low socioeconomic status is a common factor in bullying, and immigrant youth are more likely to be bullied than locally born youth, according to the US Department of Health and Human Services.
• Socioeconomic hardship . Socioeconomic hardship can lead to unstable housing or homelessness, as well as limited transportation resources. One child in six lives in poverty in the US, according to Children International.

Academic struggles can also cause students to become disengaged with school, which is one of the reasons that students with learning differences struggle with absenteeism.

Developmental Delays, Learning Disabilities, and Related Disorders

A study conducted by the National Center on Educational Outcomes found that elementary school students with disabilities served by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) were 1.5 times as likely to be chronically absent as their peers without disabilities. High school students with disabilities served by IDEA were 1.4 times as likely to be chronically absent. (IDEA addresses a broad range of mental and physical impairments, including developmental delays, learning disabilities, and related disorders.) Students with learning disabilities drop out of school at nearly three times the rate for all students, according to the National Center for Learning Disabilities (NCLD).

NCLD notes that students with learning and attention issues commonly experience bullying, struggle with feelings of failure, and often find it difficult to gain acceptance among their peers. All of these factors can put them at high risk for missing school.

A report from the US Department of Health and Human Services also links chronic school absenteeism and selected developmental disabilities. Children aged five to 17 with an intellectual disability had the highest prevalence of chronic school absenteeism at 14 percent, followed by children with autism spectrum disorder at 9 percent, those with other developmental delays at 7.2 percent, and those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) at 5.2 percent.

Mental Health and School Attendance

Mental health issues are among the factors that contribute to chronic absences, according to Attendance Works. Diagnoses of anxiety disorder and depression are not uncommon in children, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), which reports that as many as 2.8 million children aged 12 to 17 in the US have at least one major depressive episode in a year. Approximately 80 percent of children with an anxiety order and 60 percent with depression are not treated, according to ADAA.

Chronic absenteeism has also been linked to trauma, which can include experiences ranging from abuse and neglect to the loss of a loved one. More than half of students will experience a traumatic event by the time they reach adulthood, according to Waterford.org.

Effects of Poor School Attendance

When children are absent from school, they miss out on consistent instruction that is needed to develop basic skills. Children in early grades are particularly susceptible to falling behind in fundamental reading skills, which can have a snowball effect that impacts future learning.

Children who have learning and thinking differences can be especially vulnerable to the impact of absenteeism because missing school reduces opportunities for any interventions that might be necessary. If teachers fail to realize that they need an intervention, they are more likely to attribute a learning difficulty to absenteeism, essentially confusing the symptom for the cause.

Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures, citing a study by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. Adults without a high school education generally earn lower incomes and experience higher unemployment than their peers who do earn a high school diploma, putting them at greater risk for poverty.

Poor attendance can also have a negative effect on social and emotional development. For example, students who are chronically absent in the early years of their education may not learn crucial school readiness skills (abilities such as critical thinking, problem solving, and creative thinking), and can fall behind their peers in social-emotional development. Excessive absences are also associated with lower scores on standardized tests, which typically assess primary skills and concepts.

While students pay the highest cost if they miss too much school, high absence rates also put a burden on teachers. Making up for lost instruction adds to their workload, and the valuable classroom time it takes up is a detriment to all students.

Addressing Chronic Absenteeism

Just as chronic absenteeism has no single cause, it has no simple solution either. Parents, teachers, administrators, and policymakers can all play a role in addressing high absence rates and improving children’s chances of receiving complete and effective education.

Strategies for Parents

Parents who are concerned that their child has a problem with school attendance can employ several strategies:

• Talk with the child . Conversations are the first step to understanding root causes and working toward a solution.
• Contact the school . Teachers, counselors, and administrators may be able to provide additional information that helps determine what is causing a child to miss school. Contacting the school also starts a conversation that can be mutually beneficial, and it demonstrates engagement.
• Consider an evaluation for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or 504 Plan . Both programs can provide special accommodations and support for students who are struggling with disabilities.
• Set attendance goals with the child . Creating a plan and tracking progress can encourage better attendance and provide opportunities for conversations and support. Simple steps such as making sure a child gets enough sleep and taking steps to prepare for school the day or night before can also be effective.

Strategies for Educators

Teachers, administrators, and policymakers can work together to address chronic absenteeism. Such efforts begin with gaining a better understanding of the importance of attendance:

• Raise awareness . Training programs can help educators and administrators understand the importance of attendance and the long-term effects of chronic absenteeism.
• Report and study absenteeism data . Identifying students at high risk and the most prevalent causes of absenteeism helps create evidence-based solutions to attendance problems. Identifying problems early is crucial for success.
• Develop trauma-informed practices . Schools equipped to provide emotional support and resources to students who have suffered trauma can address a major cause of absenteeism.
• Set clear expectations . Both students and their parents need clear guidelines about attendance rules and the consequences for missing school.
• Schedule a meeting or visit with family . Reaching out to families personally (in person or using technology that allows social distancing) can be used to develop an individualized attendance plan for families.
• Recognize good attendance . Celebrating students with good attendance and demonstrating concern (rather than frustration or dismissiveness) when students struggle with attendance creates a positive environment that encourages students.
• Implement intervention programs . Some students may require counseling, mentorship, or behavioral interventions.
• Engage with specialists for case management . Specialists who can offer assistance might include child welfare agency staff, mental health professionals, or other social support system employees.

Turning Negatives Into Positives

Parents and educators who do the difficult work of improving student attendance have powerful motivation. Every negative impact associated with chronic absenteeism has a positive corollary for high attendance. Students who regularly attend school and graduate from high school build a foundation for more positive life outcomes:

• Better academic performance
• More work options and earning potential
• Greater opportunities for higher education
• Higher civic engagement
• More developed life skills that positively influence health and economic decisions

However great the challenge, improving attendance directly contributes to more equitable education and better student outcomes.

The educational system, with all its flaws and detriments, is and forever will remain one of the most important human endeavors. The rest of this article will explain the top reasons school is crucial to learning.

Why is School Important?

1. it facilitates learning.

The fundamental purpose of education is to ensure the members of a society have a basic education. As a result, this should also be listed as the first reason school is important.

When you go to school, you’re educated by people who are trained specifically in how to maximize learning. These people – teachers – will create lessons that are at just the right education level for students, so the students are challenged but not given tasks that are too hard that they give up.

The teachers will also, ideally, create lessons that are engaging and entertaining, which helps people to learn.

Furthermore, a curriculum is used in the education system to ensure the student gets a thorough and wide-ranging education.

Combined, these structures within the education system enable and empower learners – and we can see: if you did not go to school, you surely wouldn’t know nearly as much as you do now!

2. It Provides Opportunity to All

Another important part of school is that it provides an opportunity for all people. If we didn’t have free public education, then people who couldn’t afford an education would not get the opportunity to get ahead in life.

School therefore forms an important function in enabling social mobility (which is the capacity for people to move from poor to wealthy, or working-class to middle-class and even higher).

While schools may never quite achieve perfection in regard to the ideal of “equal opportunity”, school still remains an important part of giving all students an opportunity to learn essential skills so they can succeed in life.

3. It Teaches Personal Responsibility

School helps students practice personal responsibility every time they’re given a deadline to meet, a project to complete, or an independent learning task.

When students leave school and enter the workforce, they will need to apply the responsibility they have learned during their education—completing assignments on time, managing group projects, and maintaining an ethical standard—to their occupation.

As such, schools often play a significant role in assigning students responsibilities and giving them the duty to uphold those responsibilities in a timely manner.

4. It Develops Reading and Writing Skills

Reading and writing are two of the most crucial life skills that we all use on a daily basis. It’s essential to communication in businesses and personal life. If everyone in society couldn’t read or write, communication would be much harder, and we’d all be poorer for it.

School demonstrates its importance in that it not only teaches students how to read and write at an early age, but it also continues to develop those skills throughout their entire educational journey.

Even fields outside of language studies rely on reading and understanding communications, as well as effective writing. Thus, these basic skills are instilled and reinforced in school on a daily basis.

5. It Opens Up Careers

In the long term, one of the most important feats of schooling is that it opens up career opportunities for students.

Whether it’s the fundamental skills learned in high school to an industry-specific degree at a university, there are countless ways that school prepares students for occupational careers.

Of course, the most relevant accomplishment is instilling the necessary knowledge students need to perform their jobs effectively. Many jobs require prerequisite knowledge, and school creates the ideal environment to glean that knowledge and then apply it to an occupation.

6. Helps Students Develop a Sense of Self

A lot of students will struggle in some areas of school, and that’s completely normal. Struggling through difficult subjects (and achieving success in others) helps you to learn what you’re naturally good at, and what you don’t particularly enjoy.

Without a holistic, wide and learning what subjects appeal to them of the most difficult aspects of being a student, especially in college-level courses.

Throughout this process, students will learn their niche skills and develop an understanding of how they process information, a self-recognition that is vitally important in considering what skillset they want to pursue.

7. It Prepares Students for the Future

Good schools are designed to be future-facing. They think about the challenges and opportunities of the future and make sure students are prepared for them.

We can see, for example, that many schools were very eager in the early 2000s to bring computers and the internet into classrooms in order to ensure student establish necessary digital literacy skills . This would position them well for the jobs of the 21 st Century.

Similarly, most jobs of the 21 st Century are cooperative . As a result, schools often emphasize the importance of compromise , teamwork skills , and team projects.

8. It Teaches Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

Critical thinking skills and problem-solving skills are necessary for an educated, self-governing, and functioning society.

For example, we need to be able to understand the scientific method and why science works – or else people will still be walking around believing in witchcraft.

Similarly, critical thinking is vital for evaluating the veracity of information, developing solutions to problems, and communicating with team members effectively.

Individuals who learn to think critically are generally more self-sufficient and thrive in high-demand environments where they are expected to participate in the problem-solving process .

9. It Teaches Social Skills

Schools are the key spaces in our early lives where we meet and interact with other people. Resultantly, it’s also the forum for learning social skills .

Whether it’s group projects, classroom participation, or just the sense of camaraderie that comes with having classmates, school fosters a mindset of collaboration with other people.

After all, students in the same class are learning from the same fount of knowledge. They often need to collaborate or participate in class activities to understand how to retain and apply the information.

Not only is this skill useful for retaining information more effective, but it also has merit in the workforce, where team communication is vital to the success of a business.

10. It Benefits the Economy

Education in general benefits the economy a great deal. It gives people the skills to participate productively in the workforce.

The more skilled a national workforce, the more they can get access to higher-earning jobs in the creative and service industries. A highly educated population boosts economic growth (Jorgenson & Fraumeni, 2020).

As a result, societies tend to see schools not as a sunk cost expense, but an investment. Social investment of resources into education for the next generation enables the society and its economy to flourish into the future.

11. School instils a sense of cultural and national identity

Many nations explicitly teach cultural and national identity in their schools. For example, American schools teach the pledge of allegiance. But even if it’s not explicitly taught, it is implicitly taught.

We have a word for the implicit teaching that occurs in school. It’s the ‘ hidden curriculum ’. This refers to all the subtle things we learn in school – like manners, fashion sense, and of course a sense of community identity (Alsubaie, 2015).

When we spend time with other children in the playground, we develop a sense of belonging – we are similar. We are part of the same tribe. We are one nation.

12. School exposes children to a diversity of views

If you were only homeschooled by mom and dad, you wouldn’t be exposed to alternative worldviews.

School has built-in diversity of views: from fellow school children to the diversity of views taught throughout a balanced curriculum.

Sometimes (but not always), this is exactly why people homeschool their children. Many people want to raise their children to only be exposed to a certain brand of religion or a certain political ideology.

Of course, there are many other reasons to homeschool your child – such as because you don’t like mainstream schooling teaching styles .

Nevertheless, if you were to homeschool your children, you would have to try very hard to ensure your children were exposed to a range of different types of people with different viewpoints.

13. Teaches conflict management skills

Playing in the schoolground can get rough. In fact, one possible downside of schooling is that you’ll be exposed to some cruelty from time to time from other children.

But through the adversity that children face when playing with other children in the schoolyard, they learn skills in managing conflict, engaging with people they disagree with, and developing street smarts .

Of course, we want to keep all children safe and comfortable at all times. But at the same time, realistically, children at schools will come across times when they have to deal with other kids they don’t like, and this is a learning opportunity for them that they may not get if they don’t spend so much time at school with other kids.

14. It leads to higher average incomes

Statistically speaking, incomes are higher among people with higher levels of education.

For example, the US Government found that men with bachelor’s degrees earn $900,000 per year more on average than men without bachelor’s degrees. That’s a lot of money.

This isn’t to say that there aren’t very successful people without a high education level. But it’s to say that on average you’re more likely to earn more if you’re more educated.

And this makes sense.

For example, if you have a high education level then you’ll be able to go for more competitive jobs in more specialist fields, and you’ll be a stronger candidate in job interviews.

15. It helps build social capital

If you have high social capital, you have a lot of social contacts such as friends and colleagues. If you have low social capital, you don’t know many people.

School is great for developing fundamental social capital. You meet people at school who might be able to get you in touch with someone who can give you a job. Or, they might tell you about an opportunity you didn’t know about before.

Simply: meeting people opens doors. And school is a great place to meet people.

In fact, if you go to an elite university, you have a great chance of meeting people who will be able to get you a good job after school (Martin, 2009), or who may have great contacts with the top-paying firms that hire university graduates.

16. It Provides Babysitting

Controversially, school holds a hidden value: it looks after children, which frees up parents to return to the workforce.

With more parents in the workforce, the economy can grow, and national productivity can increase.

It’s one reason why many countries now fund preschool education.

The reason this is a controversial point is that calling a teacher a babysitter is condescending and belittles the value of their job.

Of course, teachers are more than babysitters. They are professional educators – and often, highly-trained and highly-skilled at what they do.

Nevertheless, it remains true that a secondary value of education is that it frees parent up to participate in the economy as workers.

School is an institution of learning, first and foremost, serving the primary purpose of conveying information from the source to the listener.

While the model for traditional schooling has changed over the years, its importance in society has not.

Aside from providing quintessential knowledge that students need to excel in the outside world, school also instills a sense of responsibility and capability in its students.

Why attendance matters.

As reported in Educause , research shows the value of student attendance: “[A] meta-analysis has revealed that attendance positively affects both course grades and GPA and is the single strongest predictor of college grades…. Attendance matters not only because it enables the transfer of content knowledge within a particular course or student activity, but attendance provides students with access to other, noncontent-specific contextual information, resources and relationships that can positively impact their knowledge and sense of belonging …. Attending class sessions helps students to stay on track, understand expectations, foster important peer social interactions and generally promote a sense of connectedness. Increasingly, attendance is being understood as a precursor and leading indicator for student success.” 

The research also shows that attendance matters to students. While they dislike mandatory attendance policies, they admit “they would miss class more frequently without one,” and in one report cited, 85% prefer to have one. Attendance policies:

• provide guidance, allow students to know what they have to do and prime them to communicate with faculty about attendance issues. 
• set expectations and indicate the importance of their presence to their instructors, “which can be a factor in student engagement, belonging, and mattering.”
• support self-regulated learning strategies.

Suggestions for promoting attendance

Most importantly, talk with your students about why attendance matters: to develop social bonds; because people need to learn to work with people, and not just through a screen; to participate in activities that deepen learning and engagement; they’ll get better help; and because of the outcomes noted above. And don’t just say these things on the first day; reiterate them over the first few weeks of the semester to really set the tone. If there’s trouble with attendance, ask what’s impeding their coming to class. What can you talk through with them and get at the root causes of their decision not to attend?

Consider designing activities that build from week to week to encourage students to come back and activities that use ongoing teams to promote mutual accountability. They’re more likely to show up for their peers than for you.

Some faculty make assignments due well before the next class meeting. The stress students may experience about not having done an assignment that is due may lead to absences. Further, faculty can hold themselves accountable by reviewing the work before the class and disseminating it to the students present.

As we learned in teaching online, online asynchronous discussion promotes equity for those students who, for whatever reason, may find live, in-class participation challenging. Many New School students are English language learners and the additional time afforded to write and revise written responses promotes their active participation. Using the Canvas discussion board also allows absent students to fully participate, whether or not they also join in-person classes via Zoom.

Make in-class attendance participatory and engaging through multiple modes:

• Small group discussions and activities
• Paired discussions, even ‘speed dating’
• Think-Write-Share, in which students have to time formulate a response, write and edit the response and then share it with the class orally or on a shared screen like Miro or Mural
• Excursions in which student pairs or teams venture outside the classroom on learning activities
• And consider these suggestions from education developer Katy Farber, as reported in Edutopia : “During brainstorming sessions, consider supplementing classroom conversations with a Padlet where students can post ideas and everyone’s contributions are visible to the group. For reflection exercises, try giving students some choice in how they share their thoughts—they might doodle their reflection in Google Draw, or record their voices on VoiceThread or Flipgrid .”
• Encourage peer teaching in pairs or small groups; they report to the class their understanding and instructors can address any misunderstandings or concerns

In grading, attendance should not be used as a box to be checked off. Students should understand what they gain through attending class. Students can also be asked to rank themselves on their attendance.

Every school day counts: The importance of regular attendance on student success

Every student can't be Hermoine Granger (I mean, she used a time turner to attend extra classes. Phew! Talk about sincerity). Often, students tend to miss classes for various reasons. Missing a day or so every month doesn't seem like a big deal. But it can add up to a child being chronically absent. Chronic absences make students miss learning opportunities and educational experiences. Further, if not caught early, schools can't effectively strategize interventions to improve student outcomes.

What is Chronic Absenteeism?  

It is commonly measured as the percentage of students who missed 10% or more days of school in a year (while in some places, it is missing at least 15 days of school). And this includes unexcused absences, excused absences, and out-of-school suspensions. 

It is often overlooked because schools monitor the average daily attendance (the percentage of students who show up each day to school), and this data can be misleading. A higher percentage of average daily attendance (ADA) could disguise the fact that a large percentage of students are missing nearly a month of school. Research states that schools between 93 and 97 percent ADA need to analyze their data to determine the extent of the problem while schools below 93 percent ADA almost certainly are dealing with chronic absenteeism. 

Truancy is another metric that is widely tracked by schools. However, it measures only unexcused absences. That means kids who with their parent and teachers' permissions to miss school are not monitored, increasing the chances that an underlying problem might be overlooked.  And tracking truancy is done to ensure compliance with rules. 

Chronic absence data need to be collected and tracked as it is an indicator of disengagement. Schools need to understand the pattern of how many and which students miss school so they can provide early support where needed. 

Let’s delve a little deeper into the impact attendance has on student success and what schools can do to improve attendance, in turn, improve student engagement. 

The domino effect of irregular attendance on student success 

There might be numerous reasons hindering a student from succeeding. Can one of the reasons be irregular attendance? And how does attendance exactly impact student success?

• Prevents achieving early learning milestone

Attendance and participation are one of the factors that positively influence student outcomes. When students attend school more regularly, they tend to achieve more as compared to students with irregular attendance. 

Research by NCCP estimated that at least 10% of kindergarten and first-grade students miss a month or more of the school year (and this number only increases in the subsequent years). And these have a directly proportional effect on student achievement. Students with low attendance in lower classes tend to find it difficult to reach early learning milestones in Math, English, and General Knowledge. It also correlates to poor attendance in later years.

Another research by Attendance Works found that the more chronically absent the students are in the early years, the more they require reading interventions by the end of second grade. 

• Increases the likelihood of high school dropouts

In line with the previous point, a research report by the Baltimore Education Research Consortium implies that a majority of students who eventually drop out of high school enter ninth grade with a pattern of chronic absenteeism that goes back at least several years. The statistics gathered by the  Education data initiative supports that chronic absences are a leading cause for students dropping out of high school, nudging schools to prioritize attendance. 

And this leads us to the last point. 

• Negatively impacts adulthood

Students who graduate from high school have a better chance to get into good colleges, therefore increasing employment opportunities. In turn, they reap the benefits provided - health insurance, better living conditions, and more. Research shows that adults with fewer years of education tend to engage in unhealthy behaviors such as smoking and have higher rates of health concerns (diabetes, obesity, etc.). 

Causes for chronic absenteeism

Some of the common causes that lead to a student being absent from school are: 

• Significant health concerns such as asthma, poor dental health, vision impairment, diabetes, and obesity
• Mental health issues like fear, depression, anxiety, often triggered by stress, violence, or trauma in their environment
• Violence and bullying experienced at school 
• Lack of sense of belonging at school and among peers
• Problems at home, unstable housing arrangements, unreliable transportation, job loss within the family, lack of health insurance, and other socio-economic factors

What can schools do? 

Chronic absence can be solved by adopting a data-driven approach that involves engaging both students and families to identify how to prevent absences and understand where early intervention is needed. Here are a few steps schools can take. 

Collect the right data

Ensure attendance is taken regularly and accurately. Streamline the process of taking attendance, making it easier for students and parents to apply for leave and for teachers to track attendance easily. 

Review and identify problems early 

Set up a team to review school-wide reports on absenteeism (weekly, monthly, or yearly) and analyze trends between classes and types of attendance. Using the data, brainstorm intervention plans to help students improve. Design a program (involving school, parents, students, and communities) that defines what is the course of action to be taken when students are absent for 'n' consecutive days or when attendance fails to improve. 

Get students and families involved

Students and parents/guardians often don’t realize the effect of irregular attendance on student success. Engage students and parents in discussions and workshops on the importance of going to school every day. Also, have frequent talks with parents in parent-teacher conferences about attendance problems observed.  

Incentivize good attendance

Students often respond better to positive recognition and friendly competition among peers. Schools can provide school recognition and simple rewards (like extra recess time) to students who come to school regularly. The start of the school year is a particularly good time to focus on attendance.

Develop intervention programs

Many reasons keep students away from school. However, schools can strategize solutions that help identify the problem early and equip students with resources to make better decisions. 

• School counselors and health professionals should assess the reasons a student is absent by capturing and analyzing data about the student's health. They can then work with families to formulate strategies that alleviate the issues. 
• After-school tutoring programs and mentoring programs can help students who avoid coming to school because they are struggling with their academics. 
• Implement intervention programs to improve student awareness, enabling them to make better decisions about their health, lifestyle, and school. These can include mental health programs, substance abuse prevention and treatment programs, comprehensive sex education, bullying, and violence prevention programs. 

Cultivate a positive school climate

When students feel connected to the school, they are excited about attending school. So creating a positive school climate is essential.

• Prioritize improving student engagement through school activities.
• Having a safe and caring environment at school reassures students that they are cared for and would encourage them to come to school. So, build better student-teacher relationships by giving students the attention and care that they need. 
• Involve students in discussions and allow their voices to be heard. Motivate them to take responsibility for maintaining good school attendance.
• Another step can be revisiting discipline policies and changing those that further discourage students from attending school.
• Encourage students to think about what they would like to become or what goals they would like to achieve. A student might want to score high in maths while another might have a goal to get into the basketball team. Both are equally valid. Help them understand how schools can help them get where they want to be.

Being at school every day means fighting through the days when you have the blahs, the days when you have tests but didn't study, and sometimes even the days when all you want to do is curl up with a blanket and Netflix. Being in class everyday says a lot about your commitment to education and your belief that showing up is important. 

What about your friends?

School wouldn't be the same without friends. Good friends are your most loyal fan club members, there to support you when you try out for cheerleading or take the field in your first game. They listen to you go on and on about the joys of chemical reactions or help you make campaign signs for your race for student body president. DALLAS — Are the expense and effort of attending college still worth it to young Americans struggling through an unsteady economy that often lacks job security? Harvard President Drew Faust has an unqualified answer: Yes.

While in Dallas on Friday, Faust addressed nearly 500 high school students, teachers, and guidance counselors at Booker T. Washington High School.

“Going to college is one of the best decisions you will ever make. In fact, I believe college is more important than ever,” she told them in her speech titled “The Case for College.”

Faust took on the critics of college point by point. “There is no doubt that college pays off financially,” she said. “A wide range of statistics shows the economic advantage of a four-year college education.”

As an investment, a college education has a high rate of return, roughly 15 percent a year, according to a recent study by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. Over a lifetime, students who graduate from college can expect to make about 60 percent more than those who do not, well over $1 million more than they would otherwise.

During video interviews, students also voiced their support of the importance of a college education.

Emmett J. Conrad High School senior Baldwin Hamilton described it as a “stepping stone of success.”

“There are two things that I am most passionate about and that’s music and mathematics,” said Victor Ragsdale, a senior at Booker T. Washington High School. “I think college is the first time where we really get to question why we think and the way we think, rather than questioning what it is we think.Through college I hope to broaden my understanding, to get that deep knowledge …,” he added.

The following letter was emailed to all PK-12 parents on Thursday, September 29.

Dear Parent/Guardian,

The East Greenbush Central School District is off to a great start in the 2022-23 school year! It is wonderful to have all of our students back in the classroom and learning under normal conditions.

As we get further into the school year, we would like to remind you of the importance of good attendance for all students. Every day a student is absent is a lost opportunity for learning. Too many absences not only can affect achievement for the absent student but also can disrupt learning for the entire class.

Research shows that students who consistently miss school are at risk of lower academic achievement, failure and even dropping out of school altogether.

Bringing awareness to the issue of chronic absenteeism, and providing information and resources to parents can help improve student attendance and, consequently, student achievement. We saw during the pandemic how important it is for all students to be learning in-person from their teachers and alongside their classmates.

• Attendance Matters

We have an attendance initiative called Attendance Matters in order to heighten awareness of the importance of attending school each day and to improve school attendance in all of our schools. If your child is healthy, they should be in school .

Chronic Absenteeism

Most children miss a few days of school each year without long-term consequences. However, when they miss many days, the effects are almost always negative. The New York State Education Department classifies a student as being “chronically absent” when they miss 10 percent of school days, and it is different from truancy, which counts only unexcused absences.

In the East Greenbush Central School District, students are considered chronically absent when they miss 18 school days a year for any reason (10% of our 180 school day calendar). That works out to less than 2 days per month.

Over the course of a student’s high school career, missing 10 percent of school days would equate to missing almost an entire semester of school.

What Can Families Do?

Attending school regularly helps children feel better about school and themselves. Start building this habit in preschool so they learn right away that going to school on time, every day is important. Good attendance will help children do well in high school, college and in their careers.

What you can do:

• Avoid scheduling vacations when school is in session. They are considered unexcused absences.
• Build regular routines for bedtime and the morning.
• Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
• Talk about the importance of regular attendance and about how your child feels about school.
• Don’t permit missing school unless your child is truly sick. Use a thermometer to check for a fever. Remember that stomach aches and headaches may be signs of anxiety.
• If your child seems anxious about going to school, talk to teachers, school counselors, or other parents for advice on how to make him/her feel comfortable and excited about learning.
• Avoid medical appointments when school is in session.
• Keep a chart recording your child’s attendance at home. At the end of the week, talk with your child about what you see.
• Develop back up plans for getting to school if something comes up. Ask a family member, neighbor or another parent for help.
• Seek support from school staff or community groups to help with transportation, health problems, or no safe path to school.

Attendance Notifications

The East Greenbush CSD sends automated Attendance Notifications to parents whose children are marked “Unexcused Absent” or “Unexcused Tardy” on a given school day. Parents receive an email and text message via ParentSquare to notify them of the absence or late arrival. If the text message does not go through, an automated phone call will be sent.

We hope this new service through ParentSquare will improve communication regarding student attendance.

We also realize that there are a number of excused reasons why your child may be late to school. Please send a note or call the school in advance if you know your child will be out of school ahead of time.

Informal Education: Informal education is the type of education where people are not studying in a specific school or a college. They do not use any specific learning method or technique. When a father teaches his son how to ride a bicycle or a mother teaches her daughter how to cook food, then these learnings fall under the category of Informal Education. A person can get informal education by reading some books from any library or any educational website on the internet. One knows that s/he is destined to be a labour for life, because of the lack of education, while the other is thankful that s/he acquired the best formal education, which has helped him/her reach where s/he is.

However the advantage of basic education, even in the life of people engaged in unskilled menial jobs, can’t be denied. An ability to read, write and do simple calculations, make them independent, confident and less susceptible to fraud, irrespective of whether s/he is a daily wage labor or a rickshaw puller or a small farmer. Education liberates their thoughts and actions, making them capable of wisely using the resources available and progressing gradually.

Besides, all the technical aspects, education also transform the personality of an individual. It makes a person more polite and sensible. An educated person can interact better with others, or can even argue logically, when needed. She/he can analyze a person, place, thing or event in a better way and make appropriate judgments. Education changes a person’s perception of looking at others and the society, making him/her more rational or reasonable. S/he is more likely to be compassionate towards problems faced by the individuals and the society as well, and give opinions or suggestions.

Education also is the most potent tool to eliminate two of the major challenges faced by any nation and even the world – poverty and unemployment. An educated person acquires necessary skills, which make him/her employable or gainfully engaged. She/he can be gainfully employed in government/private sector or could be self employed. In both the cases, s/he becomes financially independent and self sufficient to meet the demands of his/her family. Thus, education is a two pronged spear, killing both unemployment and poverty, in one shot.

Last but not the least, another beauty of education is that, it could be acquired at any age, irrespective of your caste, creed, gender or religion. All you need to have is a desire to get educated, somewhere deep inside your consciousness. The world has many examples, where people have acquired formal education even in later stages of their lives and enjoyed its rewards.

Before I end my speech, ladies and gentlemen; I would like to request you all, to make all the possible efforts to spread education, within your individual capacities. Volunteer to teach in your spare time, inspire and help the underprivileged in gaining education, volunteer with an NGO working for the cause of education etc. There are so many things; you could do to make the nation more and more educated, as much as your resources and time permit you.

Did you know that there’s a National Speech and Debate Education Day every year? The first Friday in March celebrates the positive impact of speech and debate education on students, teachers, and the country. 

Sometimes pushed to the “fringe” of school activities along with theater and band, speech and debate is actually filled with hidden advantages, offering students both short-term satisfaction and long-term benefits. 

James Weaver, the Director of Performing Arts for the National Federation of State High School Associations, promotes the value of speech and debate as “an education-based activity that teaches research, speaking, and problem-solving skills students will use in all facets of their lives.”

Even Congress acknowledges the importance of this educational activity, solidifying the official national day of celebration in 2018.  U.S. Representative Tom Garrett weighed in on the topic , stating, “Speech and debate can be one of the most rewarding and beneficial educational activities available to students. Not only does it provide students with a chance to shine in an academic environment, but it allows for a chance to win awards for intellect.”

As you can see, speech and debate inspires appreciation in people from every walk of life—from parents and students to teachers and legislators. 

But how beneficial is it, really? It’s easy to see the value for students who grow up to be public speakers or politicians, but is there value in speech and debate for future electricians, bus drivers, or structural engineers?

5 Very Good Reasons to Attend a School Board Meeting

School board meetings are a great way for parents to get involved in their child's education and make an impact on the community. Here's why you should head over to the next one.

What is taught in public schools is the foundation of your community's future. So, aside from voting, attending school board meetings could be one of the most important things you do for your children, especially as debates about critical race theory curriculums and best practices for inclusion continue in districts across the country.

All community members and taxpayers have a right to attend school board meetings. Though it varies by the state, school board meetings are usually held monthly and generally run by five to nine elected or appointed officials holding a four-year term. School boards address budgets, academic calendars, regulations for disciplinary actions of students, policies, setting the goals for the district, and more.

Show up with the intention to listen, learn, and be a supportive member of the community because change doesn't happen if you don't show up and take action.

Here's why parents (and all community members) should attend a school board meeting—even when there isn't a controversial topic on the agenda.

Your Voice Matters

Don't agree with a zero-tolerance policy, believe financial literacy should be introduced in elementary school, or think the district needs to practice social-emotional learning ? While some large decisions may have little to do with public comment and more to do with state laws, such as mask mandates, board members still want to know what you have to say, according to R.J. Dunn, Ed.D., former Illinois state superintendent and author of The Change-Making Board: Consequential Governance for Public & Nonprofit Organizations . "I do think that at least equal weight will be given to what school trustees hear from the community," he adds.

Attending school board meetings also helps to make sure the voices of others, particularly the underserved, get heard as well. "I rarely see any parent or school member attend a meeting who didn't already have a leadership position in the PTA or some other school affiliated organization," says Schnelle Acevedo, content marketer and mother of three in Brooklyn, New York, who attended school meetings monthly pre-COVID.

"It was always the same people which sometimes meant everyone's concerns weren't being addressed and it focused on the fun stuff like fundraising and events, and I wanted to hear about homework, testing, and after school programs."

It Makes Voting Easier

School board elections are just like other local elections, but they are routinely synonymous with low voter turnout , despite them being the closest thing we have to pure democracy in this country, according to Dunn.

Anyone regardless of education, parental status, and political affiliation can become a member of the school board. "They are individuals with their own interests," says Khrisma McMurray, a graduate student and former school board candidate in Warren, Indiana.

Attending meetings allows you the opportunity to learn whose values align with the vision of the school and the community. "Maybe Angela is on the school board, and she always argues for finance or Hilary pushes for arts, and that's a big deal for you because your child is interested in the arts," adds McMurray. "These are the things you can pick up at meetings."

Plus, if you have concerns in your child's classroom and they are falling to be heard, it could be because the teachers and principal you've communicated with are only one part of the equation. Many of the circumstances in the classroom are dictated by the school board so it's in everyone's best interest to know who they are so they can participate and vote knowledgeably.

It Holds People Accountable

"Schools typically make up the largest share of your local tax bill, and attending meetings is a powerful reminder of board members' stewardship of your tax dollars," says Dunn.

By attending board meetings, community members put themselves in the position to ask board members the tough questions on behalf of the community. That can ensure they are acting in everyone's best interest, living up to expectations, and acting in a way that brings the vision for the school to life.

School boards share accountability with parents over the most critical elements of a child's growth and development: learning, socialization, health, nutrition, and safety. Parents become true partners with schools when they comprehend the full range of what schools are responsible for and how boards arrive at the decisions they make about kids, says Dunn.

You Learn About Community Safety

Safety concerns are also common topics on school board agendas. If there is a threat at the school in your neighborhood, for example, you'll want to know about it. And, keep in mind, there's a chance you won't be notified if you aren't a parent to a child at that specific school despite your proximity to it. "It's not always about the national issues," explains Dunn. "All of these local decisions and discussions have a great deal of impact beyond the school."

NEW YORK (AP) — A mass deportation operation. A new Muslim ban. Tariffs on all imported goods and “freedom cities” built on federal land.

Much of the 2024 presidential campaign has been dominated by the myriad investigations into former President Donald Trump and the subsequent charges against him. But with less than a year until Election Day, Trump is dominating the race for the Republican nomination and has already laid out a sweeping set of policy goals should he win a second term.

His ideas, and even the issues he focuses on most, are wildly different from President Joe Biden’s proposals . If implemented, Trump’s plans would represent a dramatic government overhaul arguably more consequential than that of his first term. His presidency, especially the early days, was marked by chaos, infighting and a wave of hastily written executive orders that were quickly overturned by the courts.

Some of his current ideas would probably end up in court or impeded by Congress. But Trump’s campaign and allied groups are assembling policy books with detailed plans.

A look at his agenda:

DISMANTLING THE ‘DEEP STATE’

Trump would try to strip tens of thousands of career employees of their civil service protections. That way, they could be fired as he seeks to “totally obliterate the deep state.”

He would try to accomplish that by reissuing a 2020 executive order known as “Schedule F.” That would allow him to reclassify masses of employees, with a particular focus, he has said, on “corrupt bureaucrats who have weaponized our justice system” and “corrupt actors in our national security and intelligence apparatus.” Given his anger at the FBI and federal prosecutors pursuing criminal cases against him, Trump probably would target people linked to those prosecutions for retribution.

Beyond the firings, he wants to crack down on government officials who leak to reporters. He also wants to require that federal employees pass a new civil service test.

THE U.S.-MEXICO BORDER

Trump has pledged to “immediately stop the invasion of our southern border” and end illegal immigration.

As part of that plan, he says he would immediately direct U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to undertake the largest domestic deportation operation in American history. He would target people who are legally living in the United States but harbor “jihadist sympathies” and revoke the student visas of those who espouse anti-American and antisemitic views.

In a bid to secure the U.S.-Mexico border, Trump says he will move thousands of troops currently stationed overseas and shift federal agents, including those at the Drug Enforcement Administration and FBI, to immigration enforcement. He also wants to build more of the border wall.

Trump wants to reimpose his travel ban that originally targeted seven Muslim-majority countries and expand it to “keep radical Islamic terrorists out of the country.” In the wake of the Hamas attack on Israel, he has pledged to put in place “ideological screening” for immigrants. His aim: bar “dangerous lunatics, haters, bigots, and maniacs,” as well as those who “empathize with radical Islamic terrorists and extremists.”

To deter migrants, he has said he would end birthright citizenship, using an an executive order that would introduce a legally untested interpretation of the 14th Amendment. The order would prevent federal agencies from granting automatic citizenship to the children of people who are in the U.S. illegally. It would require that at least one parent be a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident for their children to be eligible for passports, Social Security numbers and other benefits.

What to know about the 2024 Election

Trump says he will institute a system of tariffs of perhaps 10% on most foreign goods. Penalties would increase if trade partners manipulate their currencies or engage in other unfair trading practices.

He will urge that Congress pass a “Trump Reciprocal Trade Act,” giving the president authority to impose a reciprocal tariff on any country that imposes one on the U.S.

Much of the agenda focuses on China. Trump has proposed a four-year plan to phase out Chinese imports of essential goods, including electronics, steel and pharmaceuticals. He wants to ban Chinese companies from owning vital U.S. infrastructure in sectors such as energy, technology and agriculture, and says he will force Chinese owners to sell any holdings “that jeopardize America’s national security.”

FOREIGN POLICY

Trump claims that even before he is inaugurated, he will have settled the war between Russia and Ukraine. That includes, he says, ending the “endless flow of American treasure to Ukraine” and asking European allies to reimburse the U.S. for the cost of rebuilding stockpiles.

It is unclear whether he would insist that Russia withdraw from territory in Ukraine it seized in the war that it launched in February 2022.

Trump has said he will stand with Israel in its war with Hamas and support Israel’s efforts to “destroy” the militant group. He says he will continue to “fundamentally reevaluate” NATO’s purpose and mission.

TRANSGENDER RIGHTS

Trump says he will ask Congress to pass a bill establishing that “only two genders,” as determined at birth, are recognized by the United States.

As part of his crackdown on gender-affirming care, he will declare that hospitals and health care providers that offer transitional hormones or surgery no longer meet federal health and safety standards and will be blocked from receiving federal funds, including Medicaid and Medicare dollars.

He would push Congress to prohibit hormonal or surgical intervention for transgender minors in all 50 states.

Doctors typically guide kids toward therapy before medical intervention. At that point, hormone treatments such as puberty blockers are far more common than surgery. They have been available in the U.S. for more than a decade and are standard treatments backed by major doctors’ organizations, including the American Medical Association.

Trump’s goal, he says, is for the U.S. to have the lowest-cost energy and electricity of any nation in the world, including China.

Under the mantra “DRILL, BABY, DRILL,” he says he would ramp up oil drilling on public lands and offer tax breaks to oil, gas, and coal producers. He would roll back Biden administration efforts to encourage the adoption of electric cars and reverse proposed new pollution limits that would require at least 54% of new vehicles sold in the U.S. to be electric by 2030.

And again, he says, he will exit the Paris Climate Accords, end wind subsidies and eliminate regulations imposed and proposed by the Biden admiration targeting incandescent lightbulbs, gas stoves, dishwashers and shower heads.

Trump has pledged to terminate the Department of Education, but he also wants to exert enormous influence over local school districts and colleges.

He would push the federal government to give funding preference to states and school districts that abolish teacher tenure, adopt merit pay to reward good teachers and allow the direct election of school principals by parents.

He has said he would cut funding for any school that has a vaccine or mask mandate and will promote prayer in public schools.

Trump also wants a say in school curricula, vowing to fight for “patriotic education.” He says that under his administration, schools will “teach students to love their country, not to hate their country like they’re taught right now” and will promote “the nuclear family” including “the roles of mothers and fathers” and the “things that make men and women different and unique.”

To protect students, he says he will support school districts that allow trained teachers to carry concealed weapons. He would provide federal funding so schools can hire veterans, retired police officers, and other trained gun owners as armed school guards.

HOMELESSNESS

Trump wants to force the homeless off city streets by building tent cities on large open parcels of inexpensive land. At the same time, he says he will work with states to ban urban camping, giving violators the choice between being arrested or receiving treatment.

He also wants to bring back large mental institutions to reinstitutionalize those who are “severely mentally ill” or “dangerously deranged.”

PUBLIC SAFETY

Trump would again push to send the National Guard to cities such as Chicago that are struggling with violence. He would use the federal government’s funding and prosecution authorities to strong-arm local governments.

He says he will require local law enforcement agencies that receive Justice Department grants to use controversial policing measures such as stop-and-frisk. As a deterrent, he says local police should be empowered to shoot suspected shoplifters in the act. “Very simply, if you rob a store, you can fully expect to be shot as you are leaving that store,” he said in one recent speech.

Trump has called for the death penalty for drug smugglers and those who traffic women and children. He has also pledged a federal takeover of the nation’s capital, calling Washington a “dirty, crime-ridden death trap” unbefitting of the country.

Just how big was the crowd at Vice President Kamala Harris Las Vegas rally Saturday?

Her campaign put out a news release Sunday afternoon saying it’d been 12,000.

The Reno Gazette Journal had reported 17,000.

The best current estimate, based on new information from the campaign, is about 15,000 with 4,000 turned away.

Why is presidential campaign rally crowd size important?

Getting a reasonably accurate estimate is important because former President Donald Trump has made crowd size important by often talking about it as a gauge of how successful he and his campaign are.

Trump's presidency started with him insistently claiming his inauguration had more people than Barack Obama's eight years earlier, although side-by-side photos showed he was incorrect.

In a series of posts over the weekend, Trump falsely claimed on Truth Social that a crowd was created using artificial intelligence when Harris stepped off Air Force Two in Michigan.

“There was nobody at the plane,” he wrote.

Videos and numerous photos show a crowd of thousands greeting Harris.

CBS News analyzed the original photo by the Harris campaign that Trump said had been doctored.

“Metadata from the photo analyzed by CBS News showed it was taken on an Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max on Aug. 7 at 6:28 p.m. ET,” the media outlet reported. “A side-by-side comparison of the original photo and the version that appeared on social media showed that the social media version had been brightened and cropped. There were no signs of AI manipulation.”

During a news conference last week, Trump said the “Stop the Steal” rally on Jan. 6, 2021, was bigger than the 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech.

"I've spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody's spoken to crowds bigger than me," he said.

The National Park Service estimated the MLK event had about 250,000 people , while the U.S. House Select Committee that investigated the Jan. 6 events estimated about 53,000 attended Trump’s speech .

How the RGJ estimated crowd size at Kamala Harris' rally in Las Vegas

A reporter from the Reno Gazette Journal attended the rally for Kamala Harris and her running mate, Tim Walz, in person.

The estimate was made taking a starting point that Thomas & Mack Center where the event was held — and home to the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Runnin’ Rebels basketball team — holds about 19,000 people when set up for a boxing match where there are seats on the floor.

About 2,000 seats were subtracted from this capacity based on two sections that were blocked off, plus an eyeball estimate of vacant seats in the upper reaches of the arena.

The arena felt full — packed even — with the room temperature and humidity rising as more and more people crowded in.

The reporter then double-checked the estimate. By gauging 50 seats across by 20 rows up to get 1,000 people and then counting how many such sections there were, it was estimated that there were about 17 such sections.

Why the Harris-Walz campaign originally reported 12,000 attendees

On Sunday, the Harris-Walz campaign sent out a news release saying there'd been 12,000 attendees in Las Vegas — a figure repeated widely .

A Nevada campaign official told the Reno Gazette Journal on Monday that this number originated from the amount of people who’d signed up through its online event link for free tickets and who’d been tracked entering the arena.

“Staff stopped physically tracking sign-ins for the last hour of the event before we shut the doors,” she said.

Why 15,000 attendees is now used for Harris' Las Vegas rally

Although staff stopped counting people who'd signed up to attend the rally, that didn't mean people stopped entering Thomas & Mack. About 2,500 sign-ups can be processed per hour.

That puts the total at 14,500: 12,000 sign-ups who were tracked plus about 2,500 after tracking stopped.

In addition, there were people affiliated with independent organizations who attended the event and did not go through the campaign’s sign-in process.

Because of all this, the Nevada campaign official said she felt confident that 15,000 people attended.

“There were an additional 4,000 who had to be turned away after local law enforcement made the decision to halt sign-ins,” she added.

The Las Vegas Metro Police Department had estimated about 6,900 attended Trump’s outdoor rally in June .

A Las Vegas Metro public information officer told the RGJ that it did not do a crowd estimate for the Harris rally and suggested that the Clark County Fire Department be contacted.

A Clark County public information officer said the fire department did not do a crowd estimate either, adding, “I would ask the event organizer.”

The event organizer is the Harris-Walz campaign.

While there is no exact number available for the crowd size at the Harris campaign rally in Las Vegas, the Reno Gazette Journal accepts the Harris-Walz campaign as the best available source and has updated its previous reporting to reflect the latest estimate of 15,000.

More than 20,000 protesters are expected to cram into a 1.4 mile-long court-approved protest route near Democratic National Convention in Chicago next week, creating a potential standoff between demonstrators and a police department with a history of excessive force.

The 264 protest groups that have said will participate are primarily focused on Palestinian rights, ending the war in Gaza and reducing U.S. aid to Israel. Others represent a patchwork of left-leaning causes: climate activists, socialists, anti-racist organizations, queer and trans rights groups.

Harris to meet with Teamsters union roundtable

Harris accepted an invitation to meet with a Teamsters union roundtable, according to the union and the Harris campaign.

"The vice president has received and gladly accepted an invitation by IBT leadership to participate in a candidate roundtable to discuss her record of fighting for Teamsters and their families and to highlight her vision for the future," the campaign said in a statement. "The campaign looks forward to scheduling the roundtable in the near future."

The union will have a presence at the Democratic National Convention, though union president Sean O'Brien will not be a speaker, according to a source familiar with DNC convention planning. O'Brien last month delivered a speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Teamsters has previously held private meetings with both Trump and Biden.

Harris accepted the invitation today, said Teamsters spokesperson Kara Deniz, who added that the vice president's staff would coordinate a date for the roundtable.

Pennsylvania GOP Senate nominee stresses turning out base over swaying independent voters

Pennsylvania GOP Senate nominee Dave McCormick today stressed getting Republicans out to the polls as a higher priority than persuading independents to vote for him.

When McCormick was asked about his strategy to win the November election, he said at an energy roundtable earlier today, “You can’t even start to talk about independents or Democrats until you say, ‘Our people are out to vote.’”

McCormick said his strategy to push for high turnout is to be “everywhere all at the same time,” arguing the math is “pretty straightforward” when you look at the number of counties in Pennsylvania that are Republican leaning.

McCormick also acknowledged “a lot of volatility” because of the change at the top of the ticket on the Democratic side. But he remained adamant that once you have the “foundation” of big voter turnout, then you can start thinking about courting independent voters.

“Eleven percent of our voters are independent,” McCormick said. “Most of them are really unhappy with the future of the country and the future of Pennsylvania. Some of them are in supportive of President Trump, many of them are. I am hoping I can make a big push to get those folks very engaged.”

He said he believes the way to win this campaign is to make the choice between him and incumbent Sen. Bob Casey “very stark and clear.”

Pennsylvania Republican state Rep. Joe Hamm, who was part of the round table, said he has told Trump’s team members they need to be more disciplined in their messaging when they have asked him what he is hearing and seeing in the state.

“His messaging is killing us when he’s talking about how [Harris] identifies, you know, with her race. Who cares? Let’s talk about the border. Let’s talk about inflation and how, you know, hard work from Pennsylvania’s Americans are struggling to make ends meet. Let’s talk about their policies and what it’s done to our Commonwealth and this nation,” Hamm told McCormick.

McCormick responded, “When I talk about my campaign, it’s a team score. It is up and down the ballot. Hopefully my race can have an effect both up the ticket and down the ticket.”

Supreme Court temporarily rejects Biden administration request that would expand Title IX protections

The  Supreme Court  on Friday barred the Biden administration from enforcing parts of a  major regulation on sex discrimination in education  that is embroiled in litigation over its protections for transgender students.

The court rejected a request from the administration to allow less contentious parts of the regulation, many of which have nothing to do with gender identity, to go into effect in states where it has been challenged while lower courts wrangle over the contentious transgender issues.

Gov. Roy Cooper: 'I have that 2008 feeling'

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, who pulled out of consideration to be Harris' running mate , said in a CNN interview that he has "that 2008 feeling," referring to the last time his state voted for a Democratic presidential nominee.

"I said earlier today, 'I have that 2008 feeling,' and people in North Carolina know what that means. That's the last time we voted for a Democratic presidential nominee, Barack Obama," he said. "I have that same feeling now. I'm getting that vibe from voters that they want to make history again."

Trump campaign adviser says former president's schedule to 'increase'

Corey Lewandowski, a newly appointed Trump senior campaign adviser, said in a Fox News interview that the former president's schedule will pick up.

"You’re going to see him on the road all week long, and you’re going to see the president’s schedule continue to increase, because I believe that the president’s best when he’s talking directly to the American people," Lewandowski said.

When asked what needed to change on Trump's campaign, Lewandowski pointed to wanting Trump to be "in front of the American people."

"I want him to talk to small gatherings, big gatherings, rallies, the policy speeches," he said. "That’s where he excels, and that’s where he’s the best. And I think the more people who get to see him and hear him, the more likely it is they’re going to support him."

Walz joins TikTok or, as he puts it, 'TimTok'

Walz is officially on TikTok, announcing his move in his first video on the social media site today.

The governor filmed the 10-second video alongside his dog, Scout, at a dog park.

"Hey everybody, Tim here with Scout at the dog park along the Mississippi doing our first entry into TikTok," he said. "Or as he and I say: TimTok. Right, Scout?"

Former U.S. Secret Service director now herself under protection amid threats

Former U.S. Secret Service director, Kimberly Cheatle has been designated a Secret Service protectee, after resigning her position in the wake of assassination attempt on Trump last month in Butler, Pennsylvania. 

Threats have been directed at Cheatle following the shooting, criticism over security failings and her appearance on Capitol Hill, according to a source familiar with the situation.

Cheatle resigned on July 23.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., will deliver a speech at the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday, according to three sources familiar with the matter.

Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair Suzan DelBene, of Washington, and Rep. Tom Suozzi, of New York, will also make remarks on the same day.

Suozzi is expected to discuss immigration, the issue that made him a national figure after his rightward shift on the border helped him flip George Santos’s district in a special election this year.

Republicans have leaned into immigration and border issues as a primary line of attack against Harris, aiming to tie her to the issue.

Cornel West disqualified from Michigan ballot

Cornel West has been disqualified from appearing on Michigan's presidential ballot because the independent candidate's paperwork was not properly notarized, the state's board of elections announced Friday.

West was required to include a notarized affidavit of identity when filing to appear on Michigan’s ballot, but the Colorado notary who filled out the paperwork left out key details. The notary’s stamp was also on a separate piece of paper and not included with her certificate.

In a letter detailing the decision that was shared with NBC News, Michigan Director of Elections Jonathan Brater said officials reached out to West’s team in early August but did not hear back.

A spokesperson for West's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The development is a boon for Democrats, who have worried that West might pull votes from their presidential ticket. Republicans have boosted West's efforts to get on the ballot in key battleground states.

Mark Brewer, an attorney and former chair of the Michigan Democratic Party, filed a challenge in July and a lawsuit this week to keep West off the state's ballot. Brewer successfully challenged the candidacy of five Republican gubernatorial candidates in 2022 after finding fraudulent signatures in their ballot qualification paperwork.

Billionaire Republican megadonor  Miriam Adelson  appears to have a blank check policy when it comes to her support of former President  Donald Trump , as she aims to help get him back to the  White House .

Adelson’s political aide Andy Abboud was overheard telling attendees at a campaign event at Trump’s golf club in  Bedminster, N.J. , on Thursday that whatever Trump needs from Adelson, he’s going to get, according to Abboud and a person with direct knowledge of the matter.

This person and one other in this article were granted anonymity to speak freely about private matters.

“We’re going to do whatever it takes for him to win,” Abboud said in a brief phone interview Friday with CNBC, confirming his comments overheard at the event. “In her [Adelson’s] mind, and in the minds of those who run the political action committee [Preserve America], we are going to do whatever it takes for him to win.”

Trump's voice featured on new song with rappers Kodak Black and Fivio Foreign

Donald Trump's voice is featured on a new rap song with New York rapper Fivio Foreign and Florida rapper Kodak Black titled “ONBOA47RD.”

Both rappers have publicly expressed support for Trump, particularly Kodak Black, whom Trump pardoned toward the end of his first term.

“Rap music imitates reality and these artists are showing their support for President Trump, which has become a common sentiment in the Black community,” Janiyah Thomas, campaign Black media director, said.

Clips of Trump speaking are used on the song’s intro and bridge: “I’m not supposed to be here tonight. I’m here today to announce a brand-new plan to deliver more opportunity, more security, more fairness.”

Both rappers made reference to Trump during their respective verses.

“I look at the gang and I pledge the allegiance. So we’re all Donald’s secret,” Foreign said.

“The government gave me a proclamation, turn my birthday to holiday,” Kodak Black said, referring to Trump’s pardon.

Kodak Black and Fivio Foreign have 30 million combined monthly listeners on Spotify, with the former a platinum selling artists and billboard chart topper.

Vance campaign plane makes emergency landing in Milwaukee

Minutes after taking off en route to Ohio, Vance's campaign plane made an emergency landing in Milwaukee after experiencing a mechanical issue with one of its doors.

"The pilot advised there was a malfunction with the door seal. After declaring an emergency, Trump Force Two returned to Milwaukee. As soon as the issue was resolved, the plane returned to its originally planned flight path back to Cincinnati,” Vance spokesperson Taylor Van Kirk said in a statement.

Campaigning in Milwaukee earlier this afternoon, Vance was set to return to his home base in Cincinnati after wrapping two stops in the area. The campaign's plane first took off just after 1:06 p.m. CT and touched back down safely 16 minutes later after declaring the emergency.

Nearly an hour later at 2:18 p.m. CT, the plane took off again headed to its original destination with the issue resolved.

Harris claims Trump tried to cut Medicare in office. Not quite.

In her North Carolina speech, Kamala Harris said of Trump, “He tried to cut Medicare every year he was president.”

It’s a misleading line that Democrats have been using for years, based on Trump’s budget proposals that restricted payments to Medicare providers and suppliers. As  NBC News has reported , Trump’s budgets didn’t cut Medicare benefits. The spending cuts for health care providers and suppliers have been embraced by Democrats, including in the Affordable Care Act, which Harris touted on Friday and vowed to protect.

In response to the Harris claim, Trump campaign spokesman Brian Hughes said, “Their shameless lies about President Trump are an attempt to distract from Harris’ abject failure in the White House.”

She added that her administration would "bring down costs, increase the security and stability financially of your family, and expand opportunity for working and middle-class Americans."

Harris' promise to expand the child tax credit could face congressional opposition

In her speech, Harris promised "to not only restore [the child] tax credit, but expand it," adding that she would provide $6,000 to parents in the first year of a child's life.

If elected, Harris' proposal would almost surely face pushback in the Senate, which voted this month to block a smaller, bipartisan plan to impose a child tax credit.

The former California attorney general said that she went after companies that illegally increased prices and won more than $1 billion for consumers. She said she'll do more as president.

Harris refers to her own middle-class upbringing

During her speech unveiling an economic policy platform, Harris told her family's story, sharing with attendees: "For most of my childhood, we were renters. My mother saved for well over a decade to buy a home."

"Later in college, I worked at McDonald's to earn spending money," Harris said, before acknowledging that "some of the people I worked with were raising families on that paycheck."

"They worked second or third jobs to pay rent or buy food. That only gets harder when the cost of living goes up," Harris added.

Harris says she would work to pass first U.S. ban on price-gauging on food

Harris said that, as president, she would work to pass the first federal ban on price-gauging on food.

"My plan will include new penalties for opportunistic companies that exploit crises and break the rules, and we will support smaller food businesses that are trying to play by the rules and get ahead," Harris said.

She continued: "We will help the food industry become more competitive ... more competition means lower prices for you and your families."

Harris says she'll lay out full her economic vision 'in the weeks to come'

Harris told the audience in Raleigh that she'll lay out her full economic vision "in the weeks to come," but today she will focus exclusively on the cost of living.

"I will address in greater detail my plans to build an opportunity economy, and today, I will focus on one element that's on the minds of many Americans as they pay their bills at the kitchen table or walk the aisles of a grocery store, and that is lowering the cost of living," she said.

She continued: "Look, the bills add up: food, rent, gas, back-to-school, clothes, prescription medication. After all that, for many families, there's not much left at the end of the month."

In her speech focused on the economy, Harris said that the country has come a "long way" under the Biden administration.

"We were facing one of the worst economic crises in modern history, and today, by virtually every measure, our economy is the strongest in the world," Harris said.

The administration, she said, has created 16 million new jobs and has made historic investments in chips, manufacturing, clean energy and inflation is under under 3%.

"And as president of the United States, it will be my intention to build on the foundation of this progress," she said. Arizona open primary initiative has enough signatures to make the ballot

A constitutional amendment to create open primaries in Arizona has more than enough signatures to make the ballot, a judge ruled today. The measure had 536,216 signatures, more than 150,000 over the required amount.

If the amendment is approved by voters, it would create an open primary for state, federal and county candidates. For most elections, between two and five of the top vote-getters would advance to the general election.

Supporters say opening up primaries to all voters would reduce extremism in politics and engage more Americans, while critics say the parties are entitled to nominate candidates as they choose. The measure would likely engage more of Arizona’s nearly 1.5 million unaffiliated voters in primaries; currently, they have to request a partisan ballot to participate in the primary election.

Earlier this month, the measure also survived a legal challenge that claimed it violated state law and the Arizona constitution. The case has been appealed to the state Supreme Court.

Former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard to aid in Trump's debate prep

The former representative had her own exchange on the debate stage with Harris in 2019.

Vance says Trump wasn't 'denigrating' veterans in Medal of Honor remarks

In remarks to the Milwaukee Police Association, Vance defended Trump from criticism he's received after the former president claimed that a top presidential civilian award is "better" than the nation's highest military honor.

 "Trust me, the veteran community is very, very much behind Donald Trump," Vance told officers in Milwaukee.

"He’s a guy who loves our veterans and who honors our veterans," Vance added. "I don’t think him complimenting and saying a nice word about a person who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom is in any way denigrating those who received military honors."

Vance was referring to Trump's remarks yesterday at a campaign event where he shared a story about giving Republican donor Miriam Adelson the Presidential Medal of Freedom and told attendees that that award is "the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor, but civilian version. It’s actually much better because everyone [who] gets the Congressional Medal of Honor, they’re soldiers. They’re either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead."

The Harris campaign and other Trump critics quickly rebuked the former president for the remarks.

New polling digs into the Jewish vote, which could be the swing Pennsylvania demographic

Jewish voters recently surveyed in battleground Pennsylvania favored Harris over Trump by 12 points, 55%-43%, according to a poll conducted by the Honan Strategy Group earlier this month and shared with NBC News.

The survey is actually somewhat encouraging for Trump. It’s not a frequently polled demographic, so there is little other data to compare to in Pennsylvania. But anywhere from 60% to 70% of Jewish voters nationally backed Democrats at the presidential level in recent elections, according to past research, so the survey may show some small amount of movement toward him.

And Pennsylvania is the swing state with the most Jewish voters, so even a small swing toward the former president could make a big difference.

The pollster assembled the sample by contacting voters with common Jewish surnames, and respondents then self-identified when asked. The group polled 400 Jewish voters from July 26 to Aug. 1, with a margin or error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.

The survey was conducted on behalf of the TEACH Coalition/Orthodox Union, Jewish advocacy groups that have gotten involved in recent elections, including the successful primary campaign against Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., earlier this year.

“What was surprising was how close the numbers were between Harris and Trump,” said Maury Litwack, founder of the TEACH coalition. “If you look at the Jewish vote in presidential elections, the Democratic candidate usually wins in the 60s, sometimes in the low 70s, but you don’t see it tracking as closely as you do here.”

The survey found Harris’ net favorability among those surveyed at +10, while Trump’s was -19. On Israel, 53% said they believed Harris supported the Jewish state while 39% said she did not or was actively against the country. For Trump, 44% said he was excellent or good at handling U.S./Israel relations.

Roughly two-thirds of respondents said the Oct. 7 Hamas attack and a rise in antisemitism made them more likely to vote.

Interestingly, the survey found the inclusion of Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who is Jewish, as Harris’ running mate would have made essentially no difference in her polling versus Trump.

'We're rewriting history:' Biden signs proclamation to designate 1908 Springfield Race Riot site a national monument

Joined by civil rights advocates and members of Congress in the Oval Office, President Joe Biden signed a proclamation today to designate the site of the 1908 Springfield Race Riot a national monument.

"We're rewriting history. We're allowing history to be written as what happened. So our children, our grandchildren and everybody understands what happened and what could still happen," Biden said.

The landmark, where mobs of white residents tore through in 1908 to attack two Black men, became the site of a deadly riot where the white mob took their anger out on the city's Black population. By the end of the riot, two innocent Black men were hanged and homes and businesses in Springfield's majority-Black neighborhoods were demolished and burned to the ground.

The proclamation comes weeks after Sonya Massey was shot and killed in her Springfield home after she called 911 for help.

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., who previously worked to make the site a national landmark in Congress, joined Biden in the Oval Office today to commemorate the joint effort.

"Good things can come out of bad things, as long as you don't forget what happened," Duckworth said.

'We're closer than we've ever been,' Biden says about Israel-Hamas cease-fire negotiations

Biden told reporters at an Oval Office event to designate the site of the 1908 race riot in Springfield, Illinois, as a national monument that a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hamas is closer than ever.

Mediators wrapped up two days of talks today with a final so-called bridging proposal aimed at shoring up the remaining disagreements and bringing about a quick end to the conflict and the release of hostages held by Hamas. White House plans staff moves as aides switch to Harris campaign

Two White House staffers are expected to depart the Biden administration soon to join Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign, as the operation expands in the final 80-day sprint to election day, according to two administration officials and one campaign official familiar with the moves who were granted anonymity to discuss internal decisions.

With the departures, the White House is promoting deputy communications director Herbie Ziskend to an elevated role to help handle messaging around   President Joe Biden’s legacy, as he nears his final months in office, one of the officials said.

Kristen Orthman, White House principal deputy communications director, will be leaving her post to join the Harris campaign in a planning role that will coordinate across several departments, these people said.

Ian Sams, the White House counsel spokesman for oversight, will move over to the campaign as a senior spokesperson. His departure was first reported by The Washington Post.

The Harris campaign plans to announce more new staff roles as early as today, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Speaker Johnson to fundraise with GOP candidate who backed Jan. 6 arrestees

House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., will fundraise for Trump-endorsed candidate Joe Kent tomorrow as Kent takes another swing at capturing a western Washington congressional district this fall.

Kent, a veteran and Trump loyalist, drew criticism during his 2022 campaign, suggesting that the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol may have been an “ intelligence operation ” aimed at entrapping Trump supporters. He was one of two congressional candidates who spoke at a September 2021 rally in support of Jan. 6 arrestees, casting them as “ political prisoners ,” eight months after the Capitol riot.

Trump endorsed Kent in 2022 and again this year. Kent is facing a rematch with Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash., who defeated him last cycle and flipped a Republican-held district that voted for Trump in 2020. Washington's 3rd District is a top GOP target and is expected to be highly competitive again this year.

Harris campaign blasts Trump's Medal of Honor comments

Harris' campaign ripped Trump today over his comments yesterday calling the Presidential Medal of Freedom a "much better" award than the Congressional Medal of Honor, claiming those who receive the latter award have often been killed or badly injured.

"Donald Trump knows nothing about service to anyone or anything but himself," Harris campaign spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said today in a statement. "For him to insult Medal of Honor recipients, just as he has previously attacked Gold Star families, mocked prisoners of war, and referred to those who lost their lives in service to our country as ‘suckers’ and ‘losers,’ should remind all Americans that we owe it to our service members, our country, and our future to make sure Donald Trump is never our nation’s commander in chief again,"

Speaking at a campaign event yesterday, Trump lauded Miriam Adelson, whom he awarded the Medal of Freedom during his presidency, saying, "That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian. It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor."

New Jersey governor appoints former aide to fill Sen. Bob Menendez’s seat

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy announced he is appointing his former chief of staff George Helmy to temporarily replace Bob Menendez when the disgraced Democratic senator resigns next week following his  conviction on corruption charges .

Helmy first served as Murphy’s chief of staff in 2019. He  left the post  last year and has been working for a  major health care company in New Jersey .

Before he worked in the governor’s office, Helmy spent several years working   for Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., in various roles, including  state director . Helmy also spent time in the private sector and was an aide to the late Sen. Frank Lautenberg,  according to the governor’s office .

Health care workers tout key Biden-era law in open letter backing Harris, critiquing Trump

A coalition of 500 health care professionals have signed an open letter repudiating efforts by Republicans to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act, citing attacks on the law by Trump and a call to repeal it in the Heritage Foundation’s "Project 2025" materials.

In the letter , first obtained by NBC News, the signatories call Harris and Walz "the only candidates in this race who will fight for our patients and lower health care costs."

"At a time when too many families struggle to afford medical care, we have to take steps to increase affordability and lower costs. We can’t go back to a time when seniors rationed their insulin because they couldn’t afford it," the letter reads. "The IRA must stay, and be strengthened."

The law instituted a $35 cap on the cost of insulin, a popular achievement that has been all over Democratic campaign ads. It also lowered some prescription drug costs and enabled Medicare to negotiate the price of prescription drugs with pharmaceutical companies, which Biden and Harris touted during a joint event in Largo, Maryland, yesterday.

The release of the letter coincides with the two-year anniversary of the law and comes as Harris proposes other measures to reduce health costs during a campaign event in Raleigh, North Carolina, this afternoon.

Harris campaign to hold bus tour across western Pennsylvania

The Harris campaign says it's set to hold a bus tour across western Pennsylvania, a key battleground state, on Sunday.

The tour will include appearances by Harris, her running mate Gov. Tim Walz, her husband Doug Emhoff, and Walz's wife, Gwen Walz. They will focus on meeting voters, and the stops will include phone banks and canvassing, among other things, the campaign said.

The tour will start in Pittsburgh and continue with stops through Allegheny and Beaver counties.

"The Vice President and Governor Walz will expand upon the 2020 coalition in Pennsylvania, in part by highlighting their efforts to strengthen organized labor and the more than 500,000 Pennsylvania jobs created under the Biden-Harris administration through historic programs like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act," the campaign said.

Trump lauded a wealthy donor on whom  he bestowed  the Presidential Medal of Freedom as having gotten the “better” award compared to the top military honor, the Medal of Honor, because those recipients are often deceased or injured.

Speaking at a campaign event intended to discuss antisemitism, Trump was introduced by Miriam Adelson, a wealthy Republican donor and widow of Sheldon Adelson, who pumped millions of dollars of his own money into electing Republican candidates.  He died in 2021 .

“That’s the highest award you can get as a civilian. It’s the equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor,” Trump said, referring to the highest military honor bestowed for valor in combat. The Medal of Honor is often mistakenly called the Congressional Medal of Honor.

Trump staffs his presidential transition team with advisers and family

In a press release, Trump announced that his presidential transition team would be led by Linda McMahon, Howard Lutnick, Sen. JD Vance, and two of his sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.

McMahon  was the Small Business Administration administrator in the Trump administration and currently serves as the board chair for the America First Policies Institute, a conservative group.

Lutnick is the CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald.

The launch of this transition team comes later than in previous presidential campaign cycles. In 2016, Trump's campaign announced his transition leadership in May. In 2020, Biden launched his in April. 

Harris looks to sharpen economic message with a focus on cutting costs

For much of his presidency, Joe Biden struggled to convince Americans their financial condition was better than they perceived. Now, Vice President Kamala Harris will try to shake those negative perceptions as voters continue to fret about the trajectory of the economy. 

Harris will lay out more details on her economic policy agenda during a speech in North Carolina today where she is expected to focus on lowering prices, including a plan to prevent price gouging by major food producers and grocers, the campaign said. Officials explore equipping election workers with ‘panic buttons’ to combat rising threats

Officials in a key county in battleground Georgia are taking a new step to ensure election workers’ safety amid rising threats, equipping them with so-called panic buttons that would allow them to quickly contact authorities in emergencies.

The Board of Commissioners in Cobb County, a suburban area northwest of Atlanta, this week approved $47,250 in funding to purchase around 200 devices for election workers ahead of another heated presidential election this fall.

The panic buttons are being sold by Runbeck Election Services, an Arizona-based company that prints ballots and sells election equipment, including printers, to counties across the country, through a partnership with the Ohio-based security company Response Technologies. The devices are roughly the size of a credit card and can be worn on lanyards or tucked in pockets. They pair with users’ cellphones to dispatch GPS locations to the authorities when activated.

The branded Bible, listed in the disclosure as “ The Greenwood Bible ,” sells for $59.99 and includes a handwritten chorus to the song “God Bless the U.S.A.” by country singer Lee Greenwood, according to the branded Bible’s website. A limited edition copy bearing Trump’s signature is also available on the website for $1,000.

The disclosure included details about a cryptocurrency wallet and “virtual ethereum key” holdings that he valued at $1 million to $5 million.

Trump’s public positions on crypto have shifted since he first took office, when he said the  digital currency was a scam .

Harris campaign to hold a 'weekend of action' ahead of the convention

The Harris campaign says it's holding a "weekend of action" ahead of the Democratic National Convention next week in Chicago.

The campaign is expected to hold 2,800 events in battleground states including phone banks, canvassing, meet-ups, organizing booths and even "Project 2025 message trainings," the campaign said.

More than 10,000 people have volunteered to participate in the events, the campaign said, adding that Democratic leaders and surrogates will also take part. They include Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., who was the 2016 Democratic vice presidential nominee, as well as a number of House Democrats, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and his husband, Chasten Buttigieg, and celebrities such as actress Emmy Rossum and singer Ben Folds.

Harris to propose tax cuts in North Carolina speech

Harris will propose a range of new tax cuts during her remarks in Raleigh, North Carolina, later today, according to Harris-Walz campaign officials.

Her proposal will include cutting taxes for middle-class families with kids, restoring the American Rescue Plan’s expanded Child Tax Credit, providing up to $3,600 per child tax credit for middle-class families, and introducing a $6,000 child tax credit for families with children in the first year of life, her campaign said.

The decision to unveil a new tax platform in North Carolina mirrors Trump, who delivered a speech on his economic proposals — and a host of other subjects — in the Tar Heel State on Wednesday.
