Mettaton is a major character and the fourth boss in Undertale . Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL , whose body was built by Alphys . He is the sole television star of the Underground . Mettaton poses as an entertainment robot turned human killing robot in Hotland , though he later reveals the truth to the protagonist at the end of the CORE .

Initial Form

Mettaton making a "number 1" symbol

Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a 4x5 grid of rectangular lights at the top, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus 's Tile Puzzle. The grid of lights can change colors between red, yellow, green, and blue, and Mettaton uses these color changes in place of facial expressions. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves.

Mettaton EX

After having the switch on his back flipped in the Neutral or True Pacifist Route , Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX; a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin" and visible metal segments below and above his left eye.

He has a pink chest piece, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder pads above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. The chest piece has what appear to be a speaker and some knob or gauge, while the waist has two parts that seem to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core," as they both lose white pixels during his "heart-to-heart" attack. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots.

Mettaton NEO

After being confronted by the protagonist on the Genocide Route , Mettaton transforms into Mettaton NEO, which resembles Mettaton EX, but has a more combat-oriented design, however Mettaton NEO can be killed by a single attack and has no attacks of his own.

His right forearm is replaced by what appears to be a cannon, pauldrons clad his shoulders, which are shaped like legs and are longer than his arms, and he has wings on his back. The soul on his waist points upwards in a more monster-like manner, and he has a heart shape engraved on his chest plate like Undyne the Undying , also mimicking the Delta Rune in the same ways. His hair on the right side is spiked out, revealing an entirely black segment of his face, with a sparkle or crosshair in place of his right eye.

Personality

Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host that loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He supposedly strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his various shows to beat up "heel-turning villains." He shows a rather shallow appreciation for existence at times. He has a strong craving for attention and seems very egotistical, shown when he boasts about the beauty of his true form. However, despite his seemingly self-centered personality, he deeply cares about the seemingly positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground. He has also shown soft spots for several characters, such as Alphys and Napstablook. He also appears to be among the fewer characters in the Underground that has no hate or prejudice against humans despite knowing about the monsters' history with them, since his initial attempts to kill the protagonist were just him playing along with Alphys's plan, and he outright tells the protagonist he has no desire to hurt humans and is far more interested in simply entertaining. While he did attempt to kill the protagonist, it was to prevent Asgore from taking their SOUL and be seen as a hero/savior to humankind, further emphasizing his lack of prejudice. On the flip side, he has also been noted to be a very demanding boss who is very unpleasant to work for, especially according to Burgerpants, who initially considered working for him a dream, but has since grown to strongly despise him.

Neutral Route

When meeting Alphys in the Lab , the protagonist is warned about an old machine that she had created, Mettaton. Alphys describes it as a robot that was made to be a TV star but recently had anti-human combat features added as a way of making him more useful.

Immediately after this warning, Mettaton bursts through the wall (noted to be only a few feet wide, indicating that he was lying in wait for the protagonist for some time) and forces the protagonist into a deadly quiz show.

Mettaton asks a series of multiple-choice questions that must be answered correctly within several seconds (the number says 30, but goes down approximately two numbers per second, giving only 15 seconds to answer). If incorrectly answered or not answered within the time limit, Mettaton fires an unavoidable electric shock that halves the protagonist's health. In spite of this, it is impossible to die during this quiz show. Alphys on the top right gives answers via hand motion; realizing this, Mettaton chooses to humiliate her by quizzing the protagonist on the identity of her unrequited love interest. Regardless of the protagonist's choice, Mettaton ultimately departs, concluding that the quiz show has lost all dramatic tension.

Cooking with a Killer Robot

As the protagonist journeys through Hotland, Mettaton entraps them in deadly pastiches of various media genres. First, he forces the protagonist to become his assistant in a cooking show where Mettaton is preparing a cake with a human SOUL as the main ingredient, and he attempts to kill the protagonist with a chainsaw to attain it. Alphys calls in as an interruption and suggests that some viewers may be vegan in an attempt to stop Mettaton from harvesting the protagonist's SOUL as an ingredient, so instead, Mettaton points towards a human SOUL-flavored substitute on top of a faraway cupboard.

However, the cupboard begins to shoot up from the ground rapidly, forcing the protagonist to use the jetpack feature previously installed on their phone by Alphys. They fly to the top and retrieve the substitute within a time limit of 1 minute set by Mettaton while he drops eggs, flour, and milk, all of which slow the protagonist's ascent.

The milk slows the protagonist down a whole lot.

• If the protagonist reaches the substitute within the time limit, Mettaton states, like all cooking shows, he had already baked the cake ahead of time before leaving.
• If they fail, Mettaton suddenly claims the show is on commercial break and refuses to kill them as there are currently no viewers.

Either way, he comments that he was foiled yet again by Alphys. Upon interacting with the substitute after this encounter, it shows the can was stuck to the table, so the protagonist would not have been able to get the substitute given the chance.

Secondly comes a breaking news segment, in which Mettaton asks the protagonist to report on one of the several items within a room ( a dog, a video game, a movie script, a basketball, a present, and a seemingly normal glass of water), which all turn out to be bombs hidden by Mettaton. Mettaton then scatters the bombs around the area, and the protagonist is forced to find and defuse all of them with one of Alphys's phone installments before a larger bomb in the center of the room goes off.

• If the protagonist defuses all the bombs in time, Mettaton declares that the bomb now explodes in two seconds instead of two minutes.
• If the protagonist has not disabled all the bombs until ten seconds before the big bomb explodes, the time slows substantially.
• If the protagonist has not disabled all the bombs before time expires, Mettaton states that the protagonist failed to disarm them all within three minutes. However, even factoring in the slower passage of time through the last ten "seconds" of play, the total amount of time given to defuse the bombs still amounts to under three minutes.

Regardless of whether the bombs were defused or not, Alphys hacks the big bomb and disables it.

UNDERTALE the Musical

Thirdly and finally, Mettaton traps the protagonist within a musical, where Mettaton sings about a forbidden love between him, a monster; and the protagonist, a human. He mentions how sad it is that they must be sent to the dungeon, before opening a trapdoor underneath them into a room with a colored tile puzzle. Mettaton announces that the protagonist must pass the colored tile puzzle within a set time before a line of flame comes at them from the side and burns them to death.

• If the protagonist manages to complete the puzzle, Mettaton deactivates the flames "knowing" that Alphys would have done so.
• If the protagonist has stepped on a green tile, Mettaton reminds them that the tile signals a monster, which turns out to be Mettaton himself.
• If the protagonist has not stepped on a green tile, Mettaton repeatedly says "well" before acknowledging that the protagonist never stepped on a green tile, but still fights them.

Mettaton proceeds to engage the protagonist in battle after the tile puzzle. However, Alphys has one final installment on the phone she had given to the protagonist. This yellow button fires a projectile at Mettaton, which the protagonist can use in succession. Mettaton acts like he is defeated from such projectile and flees. If the protagonist does not activate yellow mode, Mettaton attacks with boxes until the protagonist has barely any health left.

End of CORE Encounter

After the protagonist reaches the end of the CORE, they are once more confronted by Mettaton. This time, however, Mettaton reveals that he had re-arranged the CORE and hired monsters so as to attempt to kill the protagonist legitimately. He states that Alphys had set up an extensive plan to self-insert herself into the story because she liked the protagonist so much and wanted to feel important by helping them. All of the previous threats from Mettaton were entirely fake, and everything was acted out, and used by Alphys to ally herself further with the protagonist; Alphys plans to intervene in the fight between Mettaton and the protagonist by "deactivating" Mettaton and thus appearing heroic to them. This time, however, Mettaton has made plans to prevent Alphys's aid, so that he could have an actual battle against the protagonist, and locks the door to prevent Alphys from entering. He explains that he wants to take their SOUL so that he can leave the Underground and become a superstar on the Surface . This way, Asgore cannot destroy the Barrier and re-ignite The War of Humans and Monsters , which would take a toll on his views.

Ohhhh my. If you flipped my switch, that can only mean one thing. You're desperate for the premiere of my new body. How rude... Lucky for you, I've been aching to show this off for a long time. So... as thanks, I'll give you a handsome reward. I'll make your last living moments... ABSOLUTELY beautiful! Mettaton after his transformation

Mettaton attacks the protagonist, but under the advice of Alphys, the protagonist tricks Mettaton into turning around so that they can flip the switch on his back to make him vulnerable. This switch transforms Mettaton into Mettaton EX and begins the true game show. By taking damage, using popular brand items, or using specific ACTs to raise the Ratings of the show to above 10 000 (or 12 000, if he still has legs), Mettaton stops fighting.

To his surprise, this is the highest-rated episode he has ever had and begins to take call-ins from viewers. Several callers, the first of which is Napstablook , convince Mettaton that he is highly valued in the Underground, and is the primary (perhaps only) source of entertainment that many of the inhabitants have. He is moved by their passion for the show and decides that he no longer wishes to leave the Underground, as well as explaining that the protagonist is strong enough to defeat Asgore. He then mentions about his inefficient power consumption, and shuts down, leaving only his upper torso remaining. Alphys then manages to unlock the door and assess Mettaton EX's state, being thankful that he was simply out of power. She acts very stressed at the thought of Mettaton being truly killed. After that, Mettaton's body can be found in the Lab and is undergoing repairs.

If Mettaton EX is killed, his overworld sprite reverts to his box form, though visibly severely damaged. Examining the wreck warrants the description "It's completely trashed."

Mystery Key

If the protagonist purchases the Mystery Key from Bratty and Catty , they can enter the house to the right of Napstablook's. The room is primarily pink, with a bed, a star-patterned pillow, star-patterned wallpaper, a pink TV, a window, and a star imprinted rug. Through a series of diaries, the house is shown to be owned by another ghost known as "Napstablook's cousin" within the game (though Papyrus states that his headcanon name for him was "Happstablook", and the room name of his house is room_water_ha p stablook ). After meeting Alphys, she designed a body for Mettaton to inhabit.

Using the Mystery Key during Mettaton EX's fight prompts him to pretend "it isn't there."

True Pacifist Route

After the protagonist has finished their date with Alphys, Mettaton's deactivated body can be found on the second floor of the Lab, atop her work table for repairs.

In the True Lab , there is a log entry stating that Alphys fears that Mettaton may not talk to her anymore after receiving his new body due to his attachment to fame.

At the end of the game, when all of the Monsters encountered as bosses have united before Flowey intervenes, Mettaton EX shows his leg from the right side of the screen. He tells Alphys and Undyne that they should kiss already since the entire crowd wants it.

After defeating Asriel , if the protagonist returns to Waterfall before exiting New Home, Mettaton is seen standing outside his old house, having recruited Napstablook as his sound mixer and Shyren as his backup singer. During the credits, he is shown on tour, able to use his original box form in conjunction with his new body's legs.

Genocide Route

OH? HOW SASSY. YOU'RE JUST ITCHING TO GET YOUR HANDS ON ME, AREN'T YOU? WELL... T-O-O B-A-D! THIS WORLD NEEDS STARS MORE THAN IT NEEDS CORPSES! TOODLES! Mettaton in the Lab on the Genocide Route

Mettaton shows up in Alphys's Lab and tells the protagonist that he will not battle them, knowing that he is no match for them. He shows up at the CORE and realizes that the protagonist means not only to kill monsters but all of humanity as well. Claiming his original functions as a human eradication robot were never fully removed, he transforms into Mettaton NEO. Despite all the buildup, he has no attacks, and the protagonist can destroy him in a single attack.

Mettaton NEO has two different variations depending on whether the player is on track for the Genocide Route. This is determined by three conditions. Mettaton NEO's Genocide Route variation requires all three of these conditions to be met:

• Completing the Hotland/Core kill count
• Killing Royal Guards
• Killing Muffet

Due to a glitch, the game always counts Royal Guards/Muffet as killed if the previous encounter was killed. This applies even if Muffet or Royal Guards are spared, which would yield Mettaton NEO's Genocide Route variation (assuming the Hotland/CORE kill count is met) despite the Genocide Route having been aborted.

For Mettaton NEO's Genocide Route variation, any attack that hits will be scripted to inflict anywhere from 900,000 to 999,999 damage and destroys Mettaton NEO in a single hit. Missing does not abort the Genocide Route as the battle continues until Mettaton NEO is destroyed. Upon his death, Mettaton NEO laments that the protagonist does not want to join his fan club and the protagonist's EXP is set to 50,000, resulting in their LOVE reaching 19.

If any of the three above conditions are not met, Mettaton NEO will be in a different variation that ultimately causes the Genocide Route to be aborted and leads to the Alphys Ending of the Neutral Route. He is still destroyed in a single attack; however, this attack only deals 30,000 to 39,999 damage. Mettaton NEO points out the protagonist's lack of killing intent, telling them that they are not "absolutely evil" before dying. This event causes the protagonist to only gain 10,000 EXP.

Relationships

Initially, Mettaton actively antagonized the protagonist under the assumption his human eradication functions along with directive errors gave him an intensified hate for humans and a need to murder them. This was proven to be an act, however, as Mettaton mentions loving humanity, but continued to go against the protagonist on his terms to take their SOUL and prevent a possible war by Asgore. After their battle, however, he was confident the protagonist was strong enough to avoid this themselves.

Mettaton initially bonded over their common interest in the culture of humanity, and he is grateful of Alphys for making his physical body. Soon after he receives his initial body, he often belittles her and her interests. However, he owed Alphys enough to play along with her plan to act out the role of a malfunctioning robot before eventually going on his agenda with the protagonist. Despite this, in the ending where he is given the role as king, he mentions how he regrets being cruel to her before she went missing.

Napstablook

Before he got his body, he was Napstablook's cousin, helping them with the snail farm and living next-door to them. They seemed very close, to the point that Mettaton originally declared that he would never leave them behind and often called them Blooky (an alias he would keep). Although he had since left them for stardom, he obviously cared for his cousin, looked regretful when Napstablook called into the program to give gratitude for his show ever since he left. Once he had his permanent new body, he immediately recruited his cousin on his tour so they could stay together.

• If "Metta", "Mett" (case insensitive) or "MTT" is typed for the fallen child 's name , the response becomes "OOOOH!!! ARE YOU PROMOTING MY BRAND?" and allows the name to be used.
• The name could also be a combination of "metal" and "automaton" or "zettaton."
• "Mettaton" may be a portmanteau of "Meta" and "ton," as Mettaton offers many instances of meta-commentary on the structure of Undertale . Examples include: referencing the viewer if one picks "Don't Know" for Alphys's crush question during the quiz show, offering a newscast to the fourth wall while the protagonist is visible on-screen, his words turning into bombs in the news report, changing the window name during his musical segment, mentioning room numbers before his colored tile maze, discussing Toriel plushies in the epilogue.
• "Mettaton" is similar in pronunciation and spelling to " Metatron ," the highest angel in Judeo-Islamic lore , also known as the Voice of God and Recording Angel, whose name is transliterated into Greek as MTT. This could be a reference to Shin Megami Tensei 's Metatron specifically, as both have metallic appearances, have similar poses, and are very powerful late-game bosses.
• In his box form, Mettaton's overworld sprite has five squares under the main screen, while his battle sprite only has 4.
• Mettaton's box form is identical to the console that operates the colored tile maze in Snowdin Forest, and this machine may have been Mettaton himself; during his colored tile maze, Mettaton remarks that the protagonist has seen the puzzle "ABOUT A HUNDRED ROOMS AGO" and presumes that they remember the rules.
• Out of every character in the game, Mettaton has the most songs associated with him, at 14 songs (15 if CORE is counted).
• Along with Flowey, Mettaton is one of the only characters in the game to have a voice clip, exclaiming " Oh, yes! " when he transforms into Mettaton EX, and "Yeah!" when attacked in his Mettaton EX form or when the protagonist steps on a green tile in the Multicolor Tile Puzzle.
• "Hopes&Dreams" references the track " Hopes and Dreams ," among other recurring mentions of this phrase.
• "Snips&Snails" and "Sugar&Spice" are references to the nursery rhyme " What Are Little Boys Made Of? "
• The video game found during the MTT News scene is heavily implied to be Undertale itself. It is graphically similar to the Undertale box cover and uses the same sprite as the game behind Mysterious Door that was programmed by the dog . Mettaton states that his appearance doesn't occur until three-fourths of the way through the game and that the game is one where the player should check everything twice if checked twice (referencing the dialogue changing in the game if something is checked or spoken to twice.)
• In the MTT News segment, the line " THIS NEWS REPORT... IS TURNING INTO A DISASTER REPORT!!! " is a reference to the 2003 Playstation 2 game Disaster Report . [1]
• The song and the scenario from the musical are a reference to the " Maria and Draco " opera from Final Fantasy VI . [2]
• Mettaton's line when you check the sink in the cooking show " THIS ISN'T A SHOW ABOUT WASHING YOUR HANDS, DARLING. THAT'S ON WEDNESDAYS! " suggests that Undertale does not take place on a Wednesday. However, the HUD during Papyrus's date [3] and the River Person [4] can allude to Wednesday if that is the computer's date; the actual day of the week is likely intentionally ambiguous.
• In Undertale v1.001, Mettaton's stats for his box form have been changed from "10 ATK 999 DEF" to "ATK 30 DEF 255." 255 is the maximum value of an unsigned 8-bit integer , and is often the maximum value possible for things in video games.
• Mettaton EX recognizes answers for "sexy," "foxy," and "tantalizing" in his essay question, but since the X and Z keys cannot be inputted without holding CTRL, they are only possible inputs in the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch versions. [5] [6]
• Mettaton EX has shoulder pads similar to Undyne's, both of which are longer and spikier in the Genocide Route.
• Notably, Mettaton NEO can be encountered in an aborted Genocide Route (Alphys Ending, Near Genocide) unlike Undyne the Undying.
• Both of their forms on the Genocide Route feature hearts on their chest pieces.
• Both of their battles on the Genocide Route feature the Battle Against a True Hero leitmotif.
• Undyne holds a spear in her right hand, and Mettaton NEO has an arm cannon replacing his right hand.
• Based off of old official artwork by Temmie Chang it is likely that Mettaton was originally intended to have claw hands. [7] [8]
• According to the Undertale Kickstarter , there were originally plans for the protagonist to have a robot husband, which is presumed to be Mettaton. [9] This feature ended up being cut out of the final version of the game for unknown reasons. [10] Additional evidence that points to this event is an unused variation of the Start Menu that can be found in the game's files and explains why the full menu suddenly includes Mettaton and Napstablook.
• The Mettaton EX fight, according to Toby, was the hardest one for him to design. [11] There were many attack ideas for the Mettaton EX fight that were never used, such as more tiny Mettaton robots, and disco dancing robots that threw stars. [12] [13] [14]
• Mettaton EX originally saved images of all the essays to the computer's hard drive. This feature was removed for being too buggy. [15]
• Several unused sprites for Mettaton EX's head show his right eye, and what appears to be the machinery on his face. [16]

• Mettaton may be inspired by the character of TV Dinnah from the 2009 video game Little King's Story , another TV presenter boss fight who wants to cook the protagonist on a cooking show and gives them a life-or-death quiz. TV Dinnah also somewhat resembles Mettaton's box form. Little King's Story was directed and produced by Yoshiro Kimura, whom Toby Fox has praised in-person during an interview for creating games that inspired Undertale . [18]
• In the trailer announcing the game's special edition, Mettaton's hands are shown motioning towards the boxed special edition; it was confirmed in a Twitch livestream of Super Mario RPG by Legends of Localization that the costumed hands filmed for the sequence belong to Heidi "Poe" Mandelin, wife of Clyde "Tomato" Mandelin, who was involved in the fan translation of Mother 3 , and also co-wrote the book Legends of Localization Book 3: UNDERTALE , a book about the game's Japanese localization. Poe also stated that the sequence was filmed in reverse; the footage was then played backwards, to achieve the final shot seen in the trailer.

Mettaton is a robot with a SOUL that appears in the HOTLANDS. He is like Chara, in the sense that they both hate humanity, even if for different reasons. Chara hating humanity for reasons unknown, and Mettaton because it was a part of Alphys's plan.

Appearance [ edit | edit source ]

Mettaton 1st form [ edit | edit source ].

In his 1st form, Mettaton is a TV screen with a wheel. That's it. The TV screen has 5×4 grid that he can make different things with on it, but that's just about it.

Mettaton EX [ edit | edit source ]

Mettaton EX looks... human (ironic since he hates humans). This form occurs when you flip the switch on Mettaton's back, which is hard enough to get to if the player isn't fast enough. In this form, he has black hair with long fringes, pale "skin" that has metal segments in it for some reason, a pink chest piece, black shoulder pads, and long high heeled boots. The chest piece has a speaker and a knob that kinda act like a gauge. Also, his hair covers his right eye.

Mettaton NEO [ edit | edit source ]

Mettaton NEO is just like the EX form, except he is more battle oriented. He has a cannon for an arm, huge spiky wings on his back, huge, dorky pauldrons on his shoulders, and now he wears black high heels. Thankfully, this only appears in Genocide Route (and he dies in one hit), because if this was real, this would be a NIGHTMARE to fight.

Mettaton is a charismatic, charming, robotic TV host that loves drama. This is shown when he is pitting the player against huge traps that Alphys defuses every time, just to make sure. He can also be very egotistical at times, and very annoying. He never really intends to kill the player, due to it being part of Alphys's plan, he just finds it entertaining.

Pacifist route [ edit | edit source ].

He appears after Alphys explains what he "accidentally" did to Mettaton. He goes on to give the player a large amount of puzzles before and during the core. He is seen at the end of the game before Flowey becomes Asriel.

Neutral Route [ edit | edit source ]

Same as above. Solve the puzzles, defeat the humanoid robot, you know what to do.

Genocide Route [ edit | edit source ]

He dissappears as soon as the player comes to Alphys's lab. He then appears at the end of the core like normal, but as Mettaton NEO. He dies in one hit, however. Wow, how amazing. The great Mettaton NEO, the one who could kill a guy with a single attack... and he dies in one hit.

During the fight with Mettaton EX, he asks you to write an essay about him. He has a different responses depending on your answer. Here is the list of them.

• This could be a reference to Shin Megami Tensei's Metatron specifically, as both have metallic appearances, have similar poses, and are very powerful late-game bosses.

• "Mettaton" may be a portmanteau of "Meta" and "ton."

I'm stuck on the Mettaton EX fight. Is there an easy way to beat him in a Pacifist run?

While it is not required to stay on the Pacifist path, the fastest way to defeat Mettaton EX would be to do so without blowing off his arms and legs, which means you will need to reach a Show rating of 12000 points, as explained in the Mettaton battle wikia page :

To defeat Mettaton EX without killing him, one must survive until his arms and legs are blown off and achieve a show rating of 10,000 or more; if his limbs are not blown off, a show rating of 12,000 or more will end the battle.

The page also lists ways to increase your rating. Here are some easy ways to do it:

Eating food sold by Burgerpants will give 300-500 rating points, but the Steak in the Shape of Mettaton's Face will give 700 points instead. Early in the battle, Mettaton will ask the protagonist to write an essay about what they like most about him. Writing "LEGS" earns 350 points, which is the highest amount, being the 'correct answer.' Equipping a different piece of armor will give 1,500 points as long that piece has not been worn previously during the fight. Using the Stick will cause it to be thrown at Mettaton. He will catch it in his mouth and ratings will boost by 700 points. Repeating this action will give 1 point. Using the stick after Mettaton has lost his arms and legs will instead give 1,400 points.

Thus, the absolute fastest way to get to 12000 Rating is to give the correct answer ("LEGS") and to constantly switch your equipped armor (keep in mind that they have to be pieces of armor that you have not already equipped during the battle).

In addition, having low health seems to be a fast way to boost your Rating, though if you have difficulty surviving this fight, you may want to restrict yourself to the previously mentioned methods.

Getting hit gives a violence boost of 10 to 50 points. Using the Pose action will give 100-1000 points, inversely proportional to the amount of health the protagonist has left.

• 2 Boasting gives a good boost as well on attacks you can successfully avoid all the attacks on. Even when someone is having difficulty, the order of the phases is always the same so you can time your Boasts for things like the break time for a bunch of free ratings :) –  Lunin Commented Feb 19, 2018 at 23:15

In addition to the answer up there, if you're very good at avoiding the attacks, there is the "Boast" option in the Act menu which steadily increases the ratings during Mettaton's turn

But beware, if you get hit, you lose a lot of ratings

The only way to spare Mettaton in a pacifist run is to "fight" him using the Act menu. Your heart cursor will be the yellow shooter type, and you have to shoot Mettaton's heart when it is available. After enough hits, his arms and legs will fall off, and you'll be able to end the battle. There is no avoiding this fight - it's required if you want the pacifist or true pacifist ending.

You can of course fight him normally with the Fight menu, but that will actually kill him and pull you from the pacifist route, so you probably don't want to do that.

Undertale is a phenomenon: a little indie game that has spawned a fan community so vast and sprawling that it rivals the communities from any triple-A blockbuster series. Fans have created perfectly representational cosplay , stunning fanart, and an incredible array of fan games  to honor and expand on the original. In the process, every last gem of lore has been mined from this game, especially when it comes to information about the unique and lovable characters.

Everyone has an intricate personality and a backstory that will get you in the feels, so it's hard to rank each of the special characters . But only Mettaton has fans both in real life and within the game world. That level of meta fits perfectly with Undertale's modus operandi, and for that reason, this character deserves a closer look. Here are a few things you might not have picked up on about Mettaton. Fair warning for those who haven't yet played this game: there will be spoilers.

10 He Was Once A Ghost

Mettaton wasn't always a robot with a SOUL. He was once a ghost similar to Napstablook, although fan art usually depicts him as pink instead of white. As a ghost, he befriended Alphys, and she eventually created a body (or several) for him. Mettaton bonded with the body, allowing him to become "corporeal" and this is the version that Frisk meets and/or fights in the game.

9 He Has In-Game Cousins

There are several prominent families in Undertale — Sans and Papyrus; Asgore, Toriel, and Asriel. Players may not know that Mettaton also has in-game family. He's the cousin of Napstablook (Papyrus refers to Mettaton in one conversation as "Happstablook") and used to help him run the family snail farm.

This means he is also the cousin of another ghost that Frisk encounters later in the game: Mad Dummy. This ghost also becomes corporeal — but only if you piss him off enough by doing a so-called Genocide run and killing all the monsters .

8 He Has An In-Game House

Mettaton doesn't just roam the underground looking for humans to kill, and he doesn't live in the laboratory with Alphys in Hotland (at least, he didn't always). He has a house in Waterfall, right next to Napstablook's.

The house is locked, but it is possible to eventually get inside. Players can purchase a Mystery Key from Bratty and Catty in Hotland; this key unlocks Mettaton's house and players can get inside to look at his stuff and read his diaries.

7 He Is Un-Datable

Many of the characters in Undertale have the option for the player to get to know them better by going on a date with them. Frisk can eat spaghetti with Papyrus, or visit the garbage dump with Alphys. Sadly, no such option exists with Mettaton.

Not only is Mettaton undatable, but he doesn't care at all for your affections. In one portion of the Mettaton EX battle, the player must write an essay. If the player enters "I love you," Mettaton will hand-wave the confession, responding with: "What a touching confession! I'll add it to the pile."

6 Friends With Shyren

Mettaton is always going on about his popularity, but it's not all showmanship. He's also friends with many of the other monsters, including Alphys, Undyne, and Shyren. He shares a love of entertainment with the reluctant songstress monster.

If the player completes a True Pacifist ending, Mettaton even forms a touring band with Shyren and Napstablook (and possibly Burgerpants), allowing Shyren to realize her singing goals outside of the underground.

5 He Loves Humans

Mettaton will reference different origin stories depending on what kind of run the player chooses, but based on most of the information, he's not out to kill all humans - he just wants to entertain them.

In fact, the player can discover that at one point previous to the game, Mettaton loved humans so much that he started a Human Fan Club.

4 He's A Glam Rocker

Mettaton first appears as a box with arms and legs, with moving lights on his primitive screen functioning as his face. At one point during a battle, the player has the chance to flip a switch on Mettaton's back, transforming him into Mettaton EX.

Mettaton's new humanoid look is clearly modeled after glam rockers from the 80s, with his high-heeled boots, aggressive shoulder pads, and perfectly sculpted eyebrows. The clincher is the title of the song that plays during Mettaton EX's appearance: Death By Glamour.

3 He Has Three Forms

Players who complete Undertale with a True Pacifist run or a Neutral run will be familiar with Mettaton's original boxy, tv-shaped form, and Mettaton EX's glamourous, humanoid rocker form. Mettaton also has a third form that only appears if the player attempts a Genocide run. Taking its cue from classic JRPGs, this third form features the aggressively enhanced Mettaton NEO, with wings, spiked joints, and a weapon for a hand.

As it does with so many things, Undertale turns the JRPG stereotype on its head by making Mettaton NEO extremely weak. Usually "final forms" of bosses are the toughest, but in this battle, any attack that connects will immediately one-shot him.

2 Legs Are His Favorite Feature

Mettaton is enamored with everything about himself, particularly with his humanoid form. But there are also several clues throughout the game that his legs are his favorite features. One of the game's best battles , the Mettaton EX boss battle, includes an essay portion on Mettaton's best quality. If the player types "legs" as their favorite feature of Mettaton, he will respond with: "That's right. Legs was the correct answer!"

Another not-so-subtle hint that legs are his favorite feature occurs in the end credits of the game. Mettaton appears in his original box-like form on a stage, but after a brief time, he sheds his original wheel and brings out his humanoid legs, in tight black pants and hot pink high-heeled boots.

1 He Defies Gender Norms

Before he was a killer robot with killer legs, Mettaton was a ghost that kept multiple diaries and lived in an all-pink house. As Mettaton EX he wears high-heeled pink boots, and sports a glamorous hairstyle and makeup, leading some fans to wonder whether Mettaton might be coded as genderqueer or trans.

Despite these antiquated signifiers of femininity, Mettaton is referred to as he/him in every exchange. While the idea of a subtly genderqueer or trans character is undoubtedly a cool one that fits with Undertale's MO, so is the idea that Mettaton is simply a he who loves pink heels.

Undertale - The Core explored: How to win the Mettaton EX boss fight

Explore the mysterious Core in Undertale.

The Core is one of the final areas of Undertale , following on from exploring the Hotlands .

The following is designed to be played as part of a complete Pacifist guide - in short, going through the entire game without killing anything to unlock a different ending .

Most other endings follow the exact same route and only differ in small ways, and our wider Undertale walkthrough delves into other areas of the game.

Follow the shadowy figures into the core and Alphys will give you some directions to follow.

After a few false turns you'll encounter some lasers - Alphys will get the order wrong, and they'll actually be blue, blue, orange so let the first two pass through you then run east through the last one.

Keep following Alphys's directions. She'll continue to lead you the wrong way, but you still need to do what she tells you.

When you reach the long conveyor belt the lasers will turn on and off at random.

Run to the right when they're off, and when the screen flashes stand still and wait for them to cycle on and off again.

At the end head north, use the save point, then head north and east until you find a barrier blocking the exit to the right. From here head north as far as you can, then east across the bridge to find the switch that disables the barrier. Double back to where it was and head east again.

You'll come to an area containing a door, a save point, and an elevator that will take you back to the entrance of The Core. Use the save point, head back to resupply if you need it, and then go through the door.

Mettaton EX boss fight

When the fight begins you'll be in your yellow form but won't be able to damage Mettaton at all. Your shots will work against his attacks, though, so take a defensive stance for a few turns until Alphys calls, then use Turn Around from the Act menu and flip the switch on his back.

He'll now take on a new form. You still can't damage him, and instead need to boost your Ratings. Pose will give you a small boost, Boast will give you a larger boost if you manage to avoid getting hit by his attacks, and Heel Turn will give you a boost every time you take damage, but unless you're confident that you can avoid getting hit we'd suggest sticking to Pose.

Your Ratings will drop slowly when it's your turn, so choose your actions as quickly as possible.

He has a variety of attacks to call on:

• Blocks and bombs: Shoot the bombs as they fall to destroy the blocks.
• Falling Arms: Shoot the yellow blocks to destroy the arms; hitting anywhere else will cause the arms to fall faster, so precision is vital.
• Disco Ball: Shoot the ball to turn the beams blue, then keep still.

Once your Ratings reach 10,000 he'll spare you.

After the fight head north; Alphys will follow you and talk to you a few times. Use the elevator to leave The Core.

It's all a bit drab here, and none of the save points will refill your HP. Follow the long path through the greyness, ignore the elevator, and you'll eventually arrive at a familiar-yet-different location.

Explore the house thoroughly to learn more about what's been going on, and grab the keys from the kitchen and outside the bedroom before heading down to the basement.

More exposition is available down here, and when you reach the end you'll find a save point and an elevator that can take you back to the start of the area. Save, ignore the elevator for now, and head down and then east to meet up with Sans again.

He'll now judge you based on your performance thus far, and then tell you you have two options: kill Asgore, or let him kill you.

Optional: If you want more plot details, quit the game, reload it, talk to Sans again, and after repeating the previous conversation he'll give you a secret password. Quit and reload a second time, talk to him again, and then quit and reload once more; Sans will now give you the key to his bedroom, and if you head back there and poke around you can find out more about him.

Head to the far end of the corridor, head north, make sure you have the Snowman Piece and the Butterscotch Pie in your inventory, and use the save point.

Keep heading up and you'll meet Asgore - after the conversation follow him inside. When you reach the final door he'll give you the option to turn back; if there's anything else you want to do then now is the time to do it, as once you go through there's no turning back.

Mettaton originally appears as a gray, largely rectangular box with a grid of lights at the top which can change color depending on his various actions, similar to the mechanism in Snowdin Forest used for Papyrus 's Tile Puzzle. He has four dials along the bottom of his body, and the bottom, he has a single leg which ends in a wheel. He has two segmented robotic arms which end in white gloves.

After having the switch on his back flipped in a Neutral or True Pacifist Route , Mettaton transforms into Mettaton EX; a new body he specially requested Alphys make for him. In this humanoid form, he has black hair with a long fringe that seems to cover his right eye, pale "skin," and visible metal segments below and above his left eye.

He has a pink chest piece with what seems to be a pressure gauge on one side and a set of lights or maybe a speaker on the other, a narrow metallic waist with a box contraption, and black shoulder guards above his segmented arms, which end in gloves. His long black-clad legs end in pink high-heeled boots.

Mettaton NEO [ ]

After being confronted by the protagonist on the Genocide Route , Mettaton transforms into Mettaton NEO, which resembles Mettaton EX, but has a more combat-oriented design.

His right forearm is replaced by what appears to be a cannon, his shoulders are clad in pauldrons, which are shaped like legs, and are longer than his arms, and he has wings on his back. The soul on his waist points upwards in a more monster-like manner, and he has a heart shape engraved on his chest plate like Undyne the Undying . His hair on the right side is spiked out, revealing an entirely black segment of his face, with a sparkle or crosshair in place of his right eye.

Personality [ ]

Mettaton is a confident, charismatic, and charming TV host that loves drama, action, and violence. He lives for his ratings and adores performing. He supposedly strikes a pose when he does something wrong and makes time on his various shows to beat up "heel-turning villains." He shows a rather shallow appreciation for existence at times. However, despite his seemingly narcissistic personality, he deeply cares about the seemingly positive impact his show has had on the inhabitants of the Underground.

Main Story [ ]

Neutral route [ ].

When meeting Alphys in the Lab , the protagonist is warned about a machine that she had created, Mettaton. Alphys describes it as a robot that was made to be a TV star but eventually had anti-human combat features added (presumably as a way of getting attention from Asgore ).

Immediately after this warning, Mettaton bursts through the wall (noted to be only a few feet wide, indicating that he was lying in wait for the protagonist for some time) and forces the protagonist into a deadly quiz show.

Quiz Show [ ]

Mettaton asks a series of multiple-choice questions that must be answered correctly within several seconds (the number says 30, but goes down approximately two numbers per second, giving only 15 seconds to answer). If incorrectly answered or not answered within the time limit, Mettaton fires an unavoidable electric shock that does very high damage and halves the protagonist's health. In spite of this, it is impossible to die during this quiz show. Alphys on the top right gives answers via hand motion; realizing this, Mettaton chooses to humiliate her by quizzing the protagonist on the identity of her unrequited love interest. Regardless of the protagonist's choice, Mettaton ultimately departs, concluding that the quiz show has lost all dramatic tension.

Cooking with a Killer Robot [ ]

As the protagonist journeys through Hotland, Mettaton entraps them in deadly pastiches of various media genres. First is a cooking show where Mettaton is preparing a cake with a human soul as the main ingredient, and he attempts to kill the protagonist with a chainsaw to attain it. Alphys calls in as an interruption and suggests that some viewers may be vegan in an attempt to stop Mettaton from harvesting the protagonist's soul as an ingredient, so instead Mettaton points towards a substitute on top of a faraway cupboard.

However, the cupboard begins to shoot up from the ground rapidly, forcing the protagonist to use the jetpack feature previously installed on their phone by Alphys. They fly to the top and retrieve the substitute within a time limit set by Mettaton while he drops eggs, flour, and milk, all of which slow the protagonist's ascent.

• If the protagonist reaches the substitute within the time limit, Mettaton states he had already baked the cake ahead of time before leaving.
• If they fail, Mettaton suddenly claims the show is on commercial break and refuses to kill them as there are currently no viewers.

Either way, he comments that he was foiled yet again by Alphys. Upon interacting with the substitute after this encounter, it shows the can was stuck to the table, so the protagonist would not have been able to get the substitute given the chance.

MTT News [ ]

Secondly comes a breaking news segment, in which Mettaton asks the protagonist to report on one of the several items within a room, which all turn out to be bombs hidden by Mettaton. Mettaton then scatters the bombs around the area, and the protagonist is forced to find and defuse all of them with one of Alphys's phone installments before a larger bomb in the center of the room goes off.

• If the protagonist defuses all the bombs in time, Mettaton declares that the bomb now explodes in two seconds instead of two minutes.
• If the protagonist has not disabled all the bombs until ten seconds before the big bomb explodes, the time slows substantially.
• If the protagonist has not disabled all the bombs before time expires, Mettaton states that the protagonist failed to disarm them all within three minutes. However, even factoring in the slower passage of time through the last ten "seconds" of play, the total time given to defuse the bombs still amounts to under three minutes.

Regardless of whether the bombs were defused or not, Alphys hacks the big bomb and disables it.

During the news sengment, a ticker at the bottom of the screen reports the following news.

UNDERTALE the Musical [ ]

Thirdly and finally, Mettaton traps the protagonist within a musical, where Mettaton sings about a forbidden love between him, a monster; and the protagonist, a human. He mentions how sad it is that they must be sent to the dungeon, before opening a trapdoor underneath them into a room with a colored tile puzzle. Mettaton announces that the protagonist must pass the colored tile puzzle within a set time before a line of flame comes at them from the side and burns them to death.

• If the protagonist manages to complete the puzzle, Mettaton deactivates the flames "knowing" that Alphys would have done so.
• If the protagonist has stepped on a green tile, Mettaton reminds them that the tile signals a monster, which turns out to be Mettaton himself.
• If the protagonist has not stepped on a green tile, Mettaton repeatedly says "well" before acknowledging that the protagonist never stepped on a green tile, but still fights them.

Mettaton proceeds to engage the protagonist in battle after the tile puzzle. However, Alphys has one final installment on the phone she had given to the protagonist. This yellow button fires a projectile at Mettaton, which the protagonist can use in succession. Mettaton acts like he is defeated from such projectile and flees. If the protagonist does not activate yellow mode, Mettaton attacks with boxes until the protagonist has barely any health left.

End of CORE Encounter [ ]

After the protagonist reaches the end of the CORE , they are once more confronted by Mettaton. This time, however, Mettaton reveals that he had re-arranged the CORE and hired monsters so as to attempt to kill the protagonist legitimately. He states that Alphys had set up an extensive plan to self-insert herself into the story because she liked the protagonist so much and wanted to feel important by helping them. All of the previous threats from Mettaton were entirely fake, and everything was acted out, and used by Alphys to ally herself further with the protagonist; Alphys plans to intervene in the fight between Mettaton and the protagonist by "deactivating" Mettaton and thus appearing heroic to them. This time, however, Mettaton has made plans to prevent Alphys's aid, so that he could have an actual battle against the protagonist, and locks the door to prevent Alphys from entering. He explains that he wants to take their SOUL so that he can leave the Underground and become a superstar on the Surface . This way, Asgore cannot destroy the Barrier and re-ignite the war between humans and monsters , which would take a toll on his views.

Mettaton attacks the protagonist, but under the advice of Alphys, the protagonist tricks Mettaton into turning around so that they can flip the switch on his back to make him vulnerable. This switch transforms Mettaton into Mettaton EX and begins the true game show. By taking damage, using popular brand items, or using specific ACTs to raise the Ratings of the show to above 10 000 (or 12 000, if he still has legs), Mettaton stops the battle.

To his surprise, this is the highest rated episode he has ever had and begins to take call-ins from viewers. Several callers, the first of which is Napstablook , convince Mettaton that he is highly valued in the Underground, and is the primary (perhaps only) source of entertainment that many of the inhabitants have. He is moved by their passion for the show and decides that he no longer wishes to leave the Underground, as well as explaining that the protagonist is strong enough to defeat Asgore. He then deactivates, limbless - whether his limbs fell off during the battle or not - as he runs out of battery power; his body can later be found in the Lab where he is undergoing repairs.

If Mettaton EX is killed, he reverts to his old Mettaton form in the world, though visibly severely damaged. Examining the corpse warrants the description "It's completely trashed."

Mystery Key [ ]

If the protagonist purchases the Mystery Key from Bratty and Catty , they can enter the house to the right of Napstablook's. The room is primarily pink, with a bed, a star patterned pillow, star-patterned wallpaper, a pink TV, a window, and a star imprinted rug. Through a series of diaries, the house is shown to be owned by another ghost known as "Napstablook's cousin" within the game (though Papyrus states that his headcanon name for him was "Hapstablook"). After meeting Alphys, she designed a body for Mettaton to inhabit.

True Pacifist Route [ ]

In the True Lab , there is a log entry stating that Alphys fears that Mettaton may not talk to her anymore after receiving his new body.

At the end of the game, when all of the Monsters encountered as bosses have united before Flowey intervenes, Mettaton EX shows his leg from the right side of the screen. He tells Alphys and Undyne that they should kiss already since the entire crowd wants it.

After defeating Asriel , if the protagonist returns to Waterfall before exiting New Home, Mettaton is seen standing outside Napstablook's cousin's house, having recruited Napstablook as his sound mixer and Shyren as his backup singer. During the credits, he is shown on tour, able to use his original box form in conjunction with his new body's legs.

Genocide Route [ ]

Mettaton shows up once the protagonist reaches Alphys's Lab and then tell them that he will not battle them, knowing that he is no match for them. He shows up at the CORE and realizes that the protagonist means to not only kill monsters but all of humanity as well. Claiming his main human eradication functions were never fully removed, he transforms to Mettaton NEO. Despite all the buildup, he has no attacks, and the protagonist can destroy him in a single attack. Killing him sets the protagonist's EXP to 50 000, resulting in their LOVE reaching 19.

Contrary to popular belief, missing or inflicting low damage on Mettaton NEO does not fail a Genocide Route. Any attack deals between 900 000 and 999 999 damage, and a MISS simply causes the game to return to the battle screen.

The only way for Mettaton NEO to say that the protagonist was "holding back" is by failing to depopulate Hotland. Mettaton points out the protagonist's lack of killing intent, telling them that they are not "absolutely evil" before dying. This event aborts the Genocide Route and leads to either the Leaderless or Alphys Ending of the Neutral Route.

In Battle [ ]

Initially, Mettaton actively antagonized the protagonist under the assumption its directive errors into giving it an intensified hate for humans and need to murder them. This was proven to be an act, however, as Mettaton mentions loving humanity, but continued to go against the protagonist on his terms to take their SOUL and prevent a possible war by Asgore. After their battle, however, he was confident the protagonist was strong enough to avoid this themself.

Mettaton initially bonded over their common interest in the culture of humanity, and he is grateful of Alphys for making his physical body. Soon after he receives his initial body, he often belittles her and her interests. However, he owed Alphys enough to play along with her plan to act out the role of a genocidal robot before eventually going on his agenda with the protagonist. Despite this, in the ending where he is given the role as king, he mentions how he regrets being cruel to her before she went missing.

Napstablook [ ]

Before he got his body, he was Napstablook's cousin, helping them with the snail farm and living next-door to them. They seemed very close, to the point that Mettaton originally declared that he would never leave them behind and often called them Blooky (a trait he kept). Although he had since left them for stardom, he obviously cared for his cousin, looked regretful when Napstablook called into the program to give gratitude for his show ever since he left. Once he had his permanent new body, he immediately recruited his cousin on his tour so they could stay together.

"Mettaton" is similar in pronunciation and spelling to "Metatron," the highest angel in Jewish lore, transliterated into Greek as MTT. This could be a reference to Shin Megami Tensei's Metatron specifically, as he also has a metallic appearance, a similar pose, and is a very powerful boss. It could also be a combination of "metal" and "automaton." It could also be referring to the prefix meta-, which means to change, possibly referencing Mettaton's different forms.

If "Metta" or "Mett" (case insensitive) is typed for the Fallen Child 's name , the response becomes "OOOOH!!! ARE YOU PROMOTING MY BRAND?".

"Mettaton" may be a portmanteau of "Meta" and "ton," as Mettaton offers many instances of meta-commentary on the structure of Undertale . Examples include his words turning into bombs, changing the window name during his musical segment, mentioning room numbers before his colored tile maze, discussing Toriel plushies in the epilogue, and offering a newscast to the fourth wall while the protagonist is visible on-screen.

Mettaton's name backward is "Not a ttem," or in other words, "Not a temmie." When you fight special enemy Temmie and refuse to give Temmie the Temmie Flakes, a jingle reminiscent to the tune of Metal Crusher plays.

The Anime Friends Button Set sold on Fangamer sells Pins with both of Mettaton's forms.

• Mettaton's normal form resembles the coin-operated robot Cooker from the Wallace and Gromit short "A Grand Day Out", this is confirmed in the artbook.
• Mettaton EX's apparel resembles a few characters from " Jojo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders ". His pink heart belt is similar to that of Vanilla Ice , and the stripes of his face resemble those of Darby . Also, his first pose during his fight resembles Dio Brando's iconic pose from the arcade game of the show. Since Mad Dummy, who may be related to Mettaton, makes several references to the show, this is very likely.
• Mettaton's normal form also has a similar shape to an NES Cartridge .
• Mettaton NEO resembles Bass's "Treble Boost" form from the Mega Man series.
• Mettaton is at least partially inspired by Twitter user nerdbotmk2 . [1]
• Mettaton EX's design and attitude are very similar to Maximillion Galactica's, a character from Ace Attorney: Justice For All.
• The parts on Mettaton EX's chest plate are not a dial and a speaker. During his "heart-to-heart" attack, both of these lose white pixels and appear to act as a locking mechanism that holds his "heart-shaped core."
• In his box form, Mettaton's overworld sprite has five squares under the main screen, while his battle sprite only has 4.
• Also in his box form, his clapping animation has disappearing squares under the main screen.
• Stepping on a green tile during Mettaton's Multi-Colored Tile Puzzle plays the same "Yeah" when Mettaton EX is attacked.
• Several unused sprites for Mettaton EX's head show his right eye, and what appears to be the machinery on his face. [2]
• "Hopes&Dreams" references the track " Hopes and Dreams ," amongst other recurring mentions of this phrase.

The first time, I typed something like, “I love Mettaton’s hair, it’s so shiny and stylish” and I got a big bonus for that. And Mettaton told me what products he used on his hair.

Then when I died, I said Mettaton had really good legs, and I got an even bigger bonus...! He said something like, "That's the correct answer!"

I tried typing I love that he is a ghost and then tried don't you remember Blooky but he didn’t react to either of those!

On my Soulless Pacifist run yesterday, first time I typed in “his hair” and he told me the brand he uses, and the second time I typed in “nothing” and he gave me the same response as I got for “everything”.

What an understanding guy.

I simply typed “Mettaton” He rather liked it.

No way! I just tried “his personality” and he said “Yes, my personality is quite charming, isn’t it?” Hah!

So far, it seems like things that give a special reaction are: hair, legs, personality, everything/nothing, swearing, toby…

I wrote a couple of lines including the fact that Mettaton was pretty, and I believe he agreed that he was attractive.

I told him he was very pretty and he responded, “Thank you, I do look nice, don’t I?”

I also mashed gibberish and he gave me a high score for it even though he said he couldn’t understand any of it.

Usually just “mettaton is cool”, though I’ve heard he especially likes it when you say he’s a good dancer.

This is a bit of a confession. I typed out “I hate you I hate you I hate you” etc until the time ran out. During my first game I honestly thought he was worse than Flowey. At least Flowey backed off after some intimidation from Toriel, but Mettaton was maliciously persistent in his attempts to kill me. And not for the sake of others like Undyne. An evil killing machine.

He was impressed with the length of my essay.

I was kind of indifferent with mettaton until the end. He was just a malfunctioning robot. If I was going to be upset with anyone, it would be Alphys, but she was helping me and I let it slide. Until I found out the truth, and was just directly angry at Alphys. Using both of us as tools for her own goals. She’s a rather messed up person, though I did soften up to her when I spent more time with her.

I was never really mad at him. In fact I feel bad that he’s missing from some group shots. He’s like the Zoidberg of the group. You only see a leg of him when all your friends get together before the boss fight in the pacifist ending, and he’s not in the group photograph you see if you don’t stay with Toriel.

I was trying to beat him before round three, so i looked up what i could type for the best bonuses. I misunderstood. I thought each trigger word got the points, so i spammed all of the words i knew.

• Actually Pretty Funny : During the "quiz" section that introduces Mettaton, at one point Mettaton will ask you who Alphys has a crush on. Answering either Undyne or Asgore will work, but if you answer yourself, Mettaton will declare that while that answer is completely wrong (and Alphys will have an incredulous look on her face), Mettaton finds the arrogance of this answer to be so amusing that he still won't penalize you for it.
• Affably Evil : He's still a lot more "entertainment robot" than "killer robot"; he treats you like an honored guest on his show, and he shows absolutely no malevolence towards monsters. Subverted; he doesn't hate humans in general either (he actually adores them), he just wants to kill you to stop a massive war .
• Agent Peacock : Especially in his EX form, which has very pretty looks, a near-perpetually-flirtatious range of facial expressions, attacks implementing his pink stilettos and heart-shaped core, and the honor of being arguably the toughest pre-endgame boss . Even before it's introduced, he's vain, flamboyant, cross-dresses during the opera segment, and by all accounts has a fixation on the finer things in life while also demonstrating that he's clever, charming, and competent.
• A.I. Is a Crapshoot : The long and short of it is, the "killer robot" thing was an act set up to make Alphys look cool, but then he decides to kill the protagonist anyway, to save the rest of the human species (and get famous above ground in the process). Ultimately... it's a subversion, because his intelligence isn't actually artificial.
• Ambiguously Bi : His similarities to Alphys and his flamboyant glam rock demeanor imply this, but his sexuality is never confirmed either way.
• Androids Are People, Too : Everyone treats Mettaton as a normal being. Justified , as Bratty and Catty reveal that Mettaton has a soul just like any other monster. In fact, creating a robot with a soul is how Alphys came to become Royal Scientist in the first place. Possibly subverted , as it is strongly implied (and potentially confirmed in his dialogue for the unused alarm clock app) that Mettaton is a ghost from the Blook family possessing a metal body.
• Anti-Climax Boss : Invoked with the fight against Mettaon NEO in the No Mercy route in order to demonstrate the futility of the sort of Level Grinding that gets you into that route — after intense build-up, including his own unique theme song, he dies in one hit. He doesn't even have an attack pattern.
• Anti-Villain : He is set-up to be a Noble Anti-Villain first, as he never tries to stab you with your back turned and you can't actually die from any of his segments, before he is revealed to be a Well-Intentioned Anti-Villain that wants to kill you to stop a massive war, and to make himself a celebrity on the surface. Also goes in hand with Villain In Name Only for first not being evil to begin with, and that him desiring to kill humans is far from the truth .
• Arc Villain : He is this in the Hotlands section of the game, especially when he takes his kid gloves off and starts hiring other monsters before trying to kill you himself.
• An Arm and a Leg : During his EX fight, Mettaton will eventually lose his limbs. This happens sooner if the player attacks his heart-shaped core . He gets better later, as seen in his cameo during the Asgore fight intervention and the true credits.
• Arm Cannon : He gets a prominent one as Mettaton NEO on the No Mercy run. Not that he ever gets to use it.
• Artificial Intelligence : Mettaton was built by Alphys, though he does apparently have his own soul. This is because he really isn’t a robot, but a ghost possessing a metal body .
• As Himself : Though Mettaton appears in many In-Universe films and TV shows, no character names or even personas are even brought up — he's always simply playing himself.
• Attention Whore : The number of shows he apparently runs and some potential NPC dialogue implies that he's almost literally always performing , and at the end of the Hotland section of the game, he drives Alphys' plan Off the Rails and attempts to steal the player's soul partly to get a bigger audience than he already has by taking his career to the surface .
• Awesome, but Impractical : In-Universe , as he clearly likes his Mettaton EX form very much, but due to the form's "inefficient" power usage, he can't stay in the form for very long until his battery power conks out. He gets better by the end of the game after getting fixed by Alphys. It's still unknown if the power problem got fixed or not. Exaggerated for Mettaton NEO, who looks intimidating but whose defense is so poor that he dies in a single hit. In that form, he never acts even if you deliberately waste time, so it's also possible that Mettaton NEO was just a bluff .
• Bad "Bad Acting" : Somewhat invoked. For the most part, he seems enthusiastic and competent, but after the tile puzzle, he's clearly sick of the charade and of Alphys botching her lines, and he seems to just stop trying altogether . Mettaton: (after getting shot by the protagonist) OOOH! OOOOOOOOH! YOU'VE DEFEATED ME!! HOW CAN THIS BE, YOU WERE STRONGER THAN I THOUGHT, ETC.
• Bad Boss : Zig-zagged. Burgerpants affirms that he's terrible to him at least, doing stuff like punishing him by forcing him to listen to an album of songs all about berating him and telling him how bad he is at his work if he doesn't perform to Mettaton's standards. If he becomes king of the Underground, anybody who doesn't like him just... disappears, with the implication that he's getting rid of any dissenters. However, see Benevolent Boss below.
• Beauty Is Bad : Mettaton, despite looking like a calculator on a wheel, is considered gorgeous by much of the underground, and he is the antagonist of Hotland. Makes a bit more sense with his EX form . Eventually subverted , after his Character Development .
• Become a Real Boy : Hinted. He is so fond of humans he founded a fan club celebrating them, and the body he asks Alphys to build for him is the most humanoid thing you see underground, being basically a metal pretty boy. It even has its own visible SOUL.

• Beta Outfit : Mettaton’s first calculator-like form.
• Big Brother Instinct : He's very protective and supportive of Napstablook, his cousin . Them calling him during the Mettaton EX fight makes him lose the will to fight you.
• Big Entrance : You hear large, pounding footsteps shaking everything in the room , and then Mettaton breaks in through the wall and starts a game show!
• Big "YES!" : Mettaton lets out several throughout the course of the game, along with a voiced one when he transforms into his EX form . "Ohhhhhh yessssssssss!!"
• Bishōnen Line : His two alternate forms are basically a pair of glam rock stars.
• The Caligula : He shows hints of this in some of the neutral endings where he becomes the ruler of the Underground. See Cult of Personality below.
• CAPS LOCK : His speech is written in all capital letters, to give it a robotic feel. Once he changes form, his text appears normally. He still uses all-caps in some sentences, implying his previous No Indoor Voice was mostly affected. Like the skeleton bros., it contrasts with Napstablook's all lowercase letters .
• Chainsaw Good : He seems to enjoy them enough to feature them regularly in his cooking show.
• Chef of Iron : Literally. Actually, it's unclear how good his cooking skills actually are, but he already made the cake ahead of time , and he's a skilled combatant (with or without a chainsaw).
• Clipped-Wing Angel : In his normal, rectangular form, he's totally invulnerable to the player's attacks. Not so in his EX form, which can be damaged easily and has terrible battery life to boot. His No Mercy run form gets this even worse, being his hardest-to-reach form and met with a lot of self-hype, when literally all it can do to you is potentially die throwing you out of the No Mercy run.
• Combat Stilettos : His humanoid forms have some killer heels. One of his early attacks even attacks the player with them in the form of legs with heels that start/stop moving when the player shoots them.
• Crapsaccharine World : How Papyrus describes the Underground in endings where Mettaton becomes ruler. See Cult of Personality below.
• Cult of Personality : In some neutral endings. If Toriel and Undyne are both dead, he becomes ruler. Anyone who does not worship Mettaton "goes missing".
• Custom-Built Host : Mettaton is a performing robot built by Alphys, but is actually a ghost-like monster, implied to be a cousin to Napstablook and Mad Dummy, possessing a mechanical body Alphys built for them so they could live out their dreams of being a star to monster-kind .
• Cut the Juice : During your final confrontation with him, Alphys calls to tell you about a switch on his back that will make him vulnerable if flipped. It's a subversion : the switch isn't an off switch, but makes Mettaton switch forms. The vulnerability is that the switch-activated form has much lower defenses than the initial one. Played straight in his peaceful defeat, where his EX form drains his batteries much faster and puts him out of action, although he's already made peace with the human before shutting down.
• Dance Battler : He's constantly dancing and posing as Mettaton EX, and he frequently uses his legs (and a disco ball) to attack.
• Deadpan Snarker : To a truly hilarious degree. He'll never let an opportunity to snark at Alphys' or the Protagonist's expense pass by him.
• Declaration of Protection : Despite his self-absorbed nature, he cares a lot about his cousin, Napstablook, and his friend, Alphys. It is more explicit in the No Mercy run, where he states there are people he needs to protect.
• Didn't Need Those Anyway! : Unless the player manages to defeat him very quickly, his EX form will lose its arms and legs during the battle .
• Disney Death : Pacifist route only. Raising his ratings to a certain threshold will result in his battery becoming completely drained, temporarily 'killing' him on the spot. Justified, since you didn't outright destroy his body, and since he's fused with it now, attacking him will actually kill him for real. After his peaceful defeat, his inactive body is on Alphys' worktable undergoing repairs, which are completed in the True Pacifist Ending.
• Does This Remind You of Anything? : His efforts to become corporeal are highly reminiscent of transitioning . He even goes through a pronoun change — Undyne, his former neighbor, only calls him "they" when you call her from his house, Napstablook's house, or the farm, implying that "they," "them" and "their" were the pronouns he used before he was able to transition into a robotic body. In all forms of his robot body, however, he goes only by "he," "him," and "his." Since Mettaton disappeared without a trace and didn't keep in touch, there would be no way for Undyne to know about the pronoun change. Another possibility is that ghosts, being incorporeal, go by "they", "them", and "their" by default, since all ghosts in the game are referred to this way, and only begin to identify with a specific gender once they've inhabited a body , a possibility reinforced by Mad Mew Mew going through a similar arc and ending off going from "they/them/their" to "she/her."
• Early-Bird Cameo : Papyrus' randomly generated maze puzzle machine is Mettaton; this is more noticeable on a second playthrough or if you go back to see that it's gone. This also changes the context of it "messing up"; it wasn't a technical error or a cosmic bout of bad luck, it was Mettaton screwing with Papyrus .
• Eating Machine : Has a cooking show, even. Justified, he's actually a ghost.
• Even the Guys Want Him : Oh, yes. note  OHHHHHHH YEEEEEEEEES! Papyrus calls him his "favorite sexy rectangle," and remarks that he wishes he lived in Hotland so that he could meet him. This is after Papyrus mentions about three times before how glad he is he doesn't live there...
• While Papyrus' puzzles are far from dangerous, Mettaton's ones are more deadly.
• While you have to cross the peaceful Snowdin Forest before reaching Papyrus, Mettaton traps you into the trap-filled CORE, where you have to fight countless mercenaries.
• While the former puts his glory quest aside to befriend the Human Child, the latter wants to take their soul to leave the underground alone, ruining decades of effort and patience for his own benefit.
• While Papyrus can be spared no matter the path you choose, Mettaton is the only monster who requires to be hit to win, even in a Pacifist run.
• While you can befriend Papyrus no matter the path you choose and being on good terms with him matters to reach the best ending, it's impossible to interact with Mettaton between the end of his arc and the True Pacifist ending.
• While both of them can potentially become the ruler of the Underground in Neutral endings and neither of them have political knowledge, they handle things differently. While Papyrus has Sans to do most of the work, he tries to be a moral support for the monsters, even if it essentially goes by cooking them spaghetti. Mettaton, on the other hand, tries to handle everything personally and miserably fails, all by transforming the Underground into a Police State where every non-fan of his TV show mysteriously disappears.
• Evil Gloating : Seems to enjoy doing this quite a bit.
• Exact Words : Because you defuse all six of his lesser bombs, the Big Bomb will not go off in 2 minutes. It will go off in 2 seconds. Too bad Alphys already hacked it. Too bad it was not an actual bomb.
• Face Death with Dignity : If you kill him on a Neutral path, he'll Go Out with a Smile , coolly (and dishonestly) saying Alphys can fix him and wishing the player luck, thanking them for giving him the chance to "perform" for them. Even when you one-shot him in a No Mercy run, he'll go out with a smirk and a dry one-liner (or mocking you, if you flubbed the requirements for a No Mercy run at the very last point where it's possible to do so). On the Pacifist path, he acknowledges that his EX form has a Fatal Flaw in its poor battery life (not that the batteries can't be replaced until Alphys fixes the problem off-screen later). He postpones his debut in the human world to remain a cultural icon in the underworld, thanks everyone for tuning in, and lets his battery life finally run out.
• Fantastic Arousal : Flipping Mettaton's switch elicits a satisfied-sounding "Oh, yes", implying that doing so turned him on .
• Fashionable Asymmetry : In his fabulous EX form, Mettaton's bangs cover the right half of his face. In his NEO form, his hair is swept up to the side in anime-style spikes . His entire face is visible, showing that the right side of it is black with an eye shaped like a crosshair.
• Foregone Victory : You cannot actually lose during his quiz; his penalty attack always inflicts half of your HP rounded down in damage and thus cannot actually kill you. You also cannot die to any of his subsequent challenges along the way to the MTT Resort; if you fail, either he does something that spares you at the last second (such as abruptly going to a commercial break) or Alphys steps in to save you. As it turns out, this is all because Alphys and Mettaton rigged the entire journey so that she can come off as a hero. Mettaton's EX form averts this trope, as by then he's gone against Alphys' plans and is trying to kill you for real. Played straight once more with Mettaton NEO, as he not only goes down in a single attack, but also doesn't even bother to attack you.
• During Papyrus' fight, he uses various MTT-brand beauty products.
• If you turn on the TV in Papyrus' house, one of Mettaton's leitmotifs will play. Papyrus also has action figures shaped like "sexy robots".
• If you date Undyne before Mettaton is officially introduced, she'll comment that one of Alphys' friends came over, and proceeded to do nothing but lie seductively on the piano and feed himself grapes.
• Mettaton's own behavior during his show foreshadows that the show you're participating in is just a setup to make Alphys look good. For example, a human SOUL is obviously much too precious to be made into a cake, being necessary to escape the Underground. Mettaton also seems strangely apathetic about defeat . Mettaton: HOW CAN THIS BE, YOU WERE STRONGER THAN I THOUGHT, ETC.
• His true nature as a ghost possessing a robot is hinted by some details: Bratty and Catty notably imply that Mettaton behaves like being built was his idea , and his "happy break time" is just another name for Napstablook's grey attack .

• From Nobody to Nightmare : In the King Mettaton ending. He starts off as a nameless snail farmer/wannabe star , has become the Underground's biggest celebrity by the time of the game, and player-created circumstances lead to him becoming a tyrannical king.
• Glass Cannon : Mettaton Neo: 90 ATK. 9 DEF. He dies in one hit; if you failed the No Mercy requirements at the end of his battle, he even lampshades it as he dies by saying that Alphys should maybe have worked a bit more on his defenses. Subverted, as he doesn't even attack you, thus rendering his stats irrelevant.
• Glory Hound : A very sympathetic version. Since he still gets a soul by killing you, he knows that he'll be able to get through the barrier and get fame in the human world as a hero. He does honestly want to help both species, and by helping his ratings, you get him to realize you're a worthy hero to stop the war yourself and people already appreciate him, so he allows you to go on in peace.
• Golden Ending : The quickest way to end the battle is by getting the ratings over 12,500 before Mettaton's limbs fall off. This can be done by changing in and out of armors, eating Mettaton-branded food, and throwing him the Stick. note  Throwing the Stick requires it to be in the inventory, not equipped. Though even though his limbs don't fall off, he still appears as just a head and torso in the Overworld.
• Good All Along : Although he acted as if he wanted to kill all humans at Alphys' request, he actually wants to save humanity... which means he has to kill you so Asgore won't get your soul.
• Go Out with a Smile : No matter what the player does, the last they see of Mettaton is a smile including if they kill him .
• Graceful Loser : In the neutral and pacifist routes, he takes his defeat remarkably well. In the pacifist route, he even has a bit of a So Proud of You moment.
• Gratuitous English : His "OHHH YESS!" is always written in English in the Japanese translation of the game. Additionally, quite a bit of what he says is written in katakana note  mainly used for words imported from other languages , which carries the same meaning.
• Harmless Villain : During encounters with Mettaton, no matter how much you fail at his tasks (answer every quiz question wrong, stand still during the bomb defusing segment, etc.), it's impossible to lose to him, and he announces his defeat and goes on his way. This is a hint that it's all a charade planned by Alphys, and Mettaton's not supposed to harm you. Once he admits the truth to you, he isn't so harmless.
• Haunted Technology : Entering the house next to Napstablook's reveals his backstory. He's a ghost — Napstablook's cousin, to be precise — who had dreams of making it big in show biz, and was given a robotic shell by Alphys.
• Having a Blast : He loves using bombs against you, both in the newscaster segment and in battle.
• Heart Drive : His heart-shaped core.
• The Hedonist : From what we learn about him as a person, he takes full advantage of the level of lux and self-indulgence his role as a high-profile performer living the dream affords him. Undyne : I don't really like that guy. ...But I admire his lifestyle!
• Heel : Alphys set him up to look like a deadly threat who could only be stopped thanks to her interventions, so that she could look more heroic. This ends up cut short when Mettaton betrays her to further his own agenda of actually killing the human to cross the barrier.
• Heroic Sacrifice : In the No Mercy run, it's implied that part of his real reason for fighting you, even though he knows he can't win, is to allow Alphys and other monsters to escape.
• Hidden Depths : Underneath Mettaton's massive ego, biting sarcasm, and extreme self-centered nature, there's a genuinely smart entertainer who really does love his fans with all his heart. (...SOUL?) Enough that he chooses to give up going to the surface so he can stay in the Underground with them. There's also a small moment in the True Pacifist epilogue that speaks volumes about what kind of guy Mettaton is. The lion-like monster that said Mettaton's wearing a dress made him feel like maybe he could wear one, too, now has a dress on... specifically, the very one Mettaton was wearing. Turns out, Mettaton gave it to him! He's also a pretty good boss, according to everyone at the MTT Resort (besides Burgerpants), and really does care about Alphys and Napstablook.
• Hired Guns : He paid practically every monster in Hotland to take the human down.
• Hour of Power : His EX form has inefficient battery consumption, meaning he'll eventually run out of power (and lose his limbs) if the fight drags on.
• If you swear during your essay response, he responds... "Oh my! This is supposed to be a family-friendly show. Now stand still while I murder you!"
• And if you answer Toby instead: "What the hell is that? Sounds... sexy ."
• He'll also call the player character "conceited" if they claim Alphys has a crush on them.
• Impossibly Graceful Giant : He's not exactly gigantic, but he's incredibly agile and graceful for a metallic robot.
• In Touch with His Feminine Side : He has no problem whatsoever with wearing pink and high-heels, or crossdressing for the musical segment. He's also delighted that his EX form is beautiful. Makes sense, given his similarities to Glam Rock singers. His bedroom is also entirely a lurid shade of pink, covered in stars and posters, and contains a diary collection.
• Incoming Ham : Every time he makes an entrance. "OHHHH YES!"
• Informed Attribute : Played for laughs. Mettaton, the square, calculator-like robot, is considered to be rather sexy by his audience. Subverted with his EX and NEO forms, though, which are humanoid and actually attractive , but apparently Mettaton considers his base form more photogenic.
• Interface Screw : A rare example of this being used to help the player. He's fought using the yellow SOUL Mode, which allows you to shoot down his incoming projectiles before they hit you. Most of his attacks would be unavoidable without it.
• Intrigued by Humanity : He started a human fan club before he became Mettaton. He's shown to have an infatuation with humanity, as most of his entertainment is based on shows humans love and his EX form is the most humanoid being in the Underground . He only wants to kill the Child to prevent a war between humans and monsters .
• It's All About Me : He's ridiculously egotistical and self-indulgent. If he becomes king, he makes the Underground into an Egopolis .
• Jerk with a Heart of Gold : An arrogant, smugly antagonistic attention hound he may be, but he cares quite a bit about his cousin Napstablook, is good enough friends with Alphys to have initially agreed to his Killer Robot role in a scheme for her sake, and seems to genuinely appreciate how much his fans value him. Also, in the No Mercy route, he confronts you even though he knows he can't win, and implies that part of his real reason for fighting you is to protect Alphys.
• Jobber : You encounter him several times, but in almost all cases he instantly folds when you disrupt his plans. His plans also go south regardless of if you put in any effort to stop them, either due to Mettaton deciding to spare you at the last second or Alphys hacking his death traps. This is because he literally is a jobber; Alphys set him up to rapidly try and kill the human only to always fail, making Alphys look like a hero. Once he ditches this prerogative, he proves that he can kill if he needs to.
• Killer Robot : As called out by his cooking show, "Cooking With A Killer Robot". It's all an act. It actually turns into an outright inversion, since his goal after dropping the act is actually to take the human's soul in order to prevent the barrier from being broken and save the rest of humanity (and become a star on the surface).
• Large Ham : Easily outperforms Papyrus and Undyne in this department. Then again, he is an entertainment robot...
• Last of His Kind : In a sense, after his fans become really upset over his decision to leave, he then realises that humans already have stars and idols, while he's all the monsters have to look up to as a celebrity .
• Leg Focus : Lampshaded in his EX form. Praising Mettaton's legs during the essay portion of his boss fight nets you a ratings bonus. And in the ending when he forms a band with Napstablook and Shyren, he adopts a hybrid form with the rectangular body of his box form and the humanoid legs of his EX form. "Who needs arms when you've got legs like these?"
• Mettaton has no less than three leitmotifs. "It's Showtime" (which can be heard long before you actually meet him) is his TV host theme, used for his intro cutscene, while the bassline can be heard during his cooking show. "Metal Crusher" is his killer robot theme, used in his battles and a short remix occurs before his final battle . "Oh! One True Love" is his music-hall theme which reappears as "For the Fans" when you spare him .
• "Death by Glamour," his boss fight theme, draws from the former two. The opening and endings parts are heard in the opening of CORE, the "chorus" can be found in the "chorus" of his previous theme Metal Crusher, and the bridge can be heard in It's Showtime!, Live Report, and Death Report.
• While he has "Power of 'NEO'" for his NEO form, it's really just a remix of "Battle Against a True Hero".
• Lightning Bruiser : Bordering into Confusion Fu territory. Mettaton's battle style is unusual and based on being varied, fast, and flashy to entertain viewers first and foremost. Trying to both entertain and battle, he's a competent fighter.
• Logical Weakness : Mettaton is originally a ghost monster, given a physical form by Alphys. As a ghost, he was incorporeal and thus immune to nearly all attacks. However, as Mettaton, he's as prone to death as any other corporeal monster.
• Mad Bomber : In his 'Newscaster' scenario, he traps you in an area full of bombs disguised as several seemingly innocuous things, like a glass of water and a dog. In his EX form, many of his attacks involve bombs as well.
• Mean Boss : When it comes to Burgerpants in any case, not so much towards his other employees. He made a whole album purely dedicated to telling Burgerpants how bad at his job he is.
• Meaningful Name : His name may be a reference to Metatron, an angel whose name abbreviates to MTT and who was a human before being transformed into an archangel. Mettaton also ascended from humble origins to become something greater than his original form.
• Mirror Boss : Notable for being the only boss that has a SOUL present during the fight itself. In a reversing of roles, you can attack it just like how bosses attack your SOUL.
• Morality Chain : It's implied that Alphys is one of these to him, as shown in one of the Neutral endings. In particular, the Neutral ending where he becomes tyrant ruler of the Underground has him mention that he wanted Alphys to help him rule, only to discover that she went missing. It's heavily implied that, had Alphys not disappeared and possibly committed suicide, Mettaton would have become a much better leader due to her advice.
• Mr. Fanservice : Mettaton EX certainly doesn't play down this sort of appeal. Ironically, his default rectangular form is considered this in-universe, being, in his own words, "more photogenic," and Burgerpants admits to purchasing (non-working) "kits" to make himself more rectangular .
• Multiple-Choice Past : Depending on what route you took. In a Neutral/Pacifist run, he was made as the entertainment-type rectangular robot and upgraded to his EX form later. In a No Mercy run, he was created as an anti-human robot first, then given his rectangular form later when he was re-purposed as an entertainment robot. Of course, his speech in his No Mercy encounter could be baloney. He takes a noticeable pause when he describes his rectangular form as "more photogenic" and despite having a fierce and imposing-looking appearance, doesn't attack you at all. Also, why would his old form be called 'NEO' (new)?
• Musical Spoiler : Mettaton NEO's battle is hyped up to all hell, receiving a pimped-out new form and crazy stats to deal with you. That is, before you one-shot him . But the fact that his theme, "Power of NEO", is only a thirty-second loop should tip some off that it's going to end quickly.
• My God, What Have I Done? : If you Spare him, he receives a call from Napstablook and clearly feels guilty about leaving them behind. It happens again in the neutral ending variant where he becomes king of the Underground; with Alphys "missing," he expresses regret over how he treated her.
• Nigh-Invulnerability : His rectangular form is described to be impervious to attack by the CHECK option, and the only way to defeat him is to flick his switch so he becomes Mettaton EX, which has low defense and a limited power supply. Despite this, he appears to be fazed when you attack him in the dungeon segment, which is actually foreshadowing that he was merely playing along the entire time, as he is immune to your later attacks before you flip his switch.
• No Celebrities Were Harmed : In his EX form , he has a striking resemblance to Ziggy Stardust and Michael Jackson , and one could even argue he looks a little bit like Prince , especially during the Purple Rain era. Squint, and you might also be able to see Trent Reznor in the 90's.
• No Name Given : Mettaton is a name adopted by him after becoming a robot . His original name is unknown, although Papyrus calls him "Happstablook, the happy ghost" .
• No, You : If you throw out an insult or cuss-word during the essay portion of his last battle, he throws it back in your face with "This essay is supposed to be describing me, not you."
• Non-Lethal K.O. : When fighting his EX form, you can either kill him with the FIGHT command... or you can raise your ratings to a certain threshold, at which point he'll decide to stop fighting and, at the same time, run out of battery power and shut down.
• Older Than They Look : His bishounen form looks like he's in his early twenties. However, Napstablook indirectly confirms that the snail farm existed before 'their best customer' Toriel left. If Sans' implication that she has been gone a hundred years is correct, the ghost cousins are over a century old .
• Oh, Crap! : Has a mild version of this when his limbs blow off during your fight. He tries to play it off as a Major Injury Underreaction , but his stuttering gives him away.
• One-Wheeled Wonder : In his usual appearance, where he balances his rectangular body atop a single comically tiny wheel.
• Mettaton during your last fight against him, even in the neutral or pacifist route. He starts as his usual self shamelessly proclaiming himself the brightest star of underground and soon-to-be of the surface. As the battle drags on he'll start to lose his composure and outright call the player out for their "weakness".
• In the No Mercy route, this is even more pronounced; at first he keeps up his Large Ham persona by saying that he needs to fight you because he can't be a star without an audience, before admitting that there's some people he needs to protect .
• In the ending where he rules the Underground, he becomes somber and saddened over Alphys' disappearance and wishes he had a chance to treat her better.
• Opportunistic Bastard : When Alphys asks him to play the heel against the human, he plays along so he can derail the plan later . In the ending where he becomes ruler, he starts by unironically thanking you for your "hard work" (i.e. killing Toriel and Undyne), as this paved the way for him to seize power .
• Paper Tiger : At first glance, Mettaton's Neo form seems to be a very powerful Super Mode much like Undyne's Undying form which despite his poor defense, makes up for it with both ridiculously high attack damage and health. The only problem is that at this point, you're Level Of Violence is so high that a single strike is all that is required to take him out.
• Percent Damage Attack : The penalty laser he uses during his quiz halves your HP and as a result cannot actually kill you. If you do hit 1 HP, he'll just skip right to the end of the quiz.
• The Perfectionist : An unusual Sanguine example. He pushes everyone who works for him to attain his high standards, and refuses to accept anything he doesn't deem to be as good as 'how they do it on the Surface'.
• Pet the Dog : He really cares about his cousin, Napstablook and his old friend Shyren, enough to go into showbiz with both of them in the Pacifist ending . If you spare him but kill Undyne and Toriel, he becomes king and has a statue built in Alphys' honor, admitting that he was cruel to her .
• Playful Cat Smile : He pulls a few smug ones here and there in his EX form.
• Plot-Irrelevant Villain : Mainly from a meta perspective. In the Pacifist run he's the odd one out of the main characters; while the other major bosses are meant to present serious questions about the player's morality, with Mettaton what you see is what you get — a silly, if deeply layered , drama queen who works more as an extension of Alphys's character for the plot. Averted, however, in the Genocide run; see Threshold Guardian below for why.
• Point of No Return : Downplayed for the Genocide route. Once you fight him in his NEO form, you're either locked into the route (if you do kill all the enemies), or abandoned it completely (if you don't). However, up until you meet the Fallen Child , you can quit and reset the game at any time with no consequences. Which makes sense, since Sans is trying to ensure that you do.
• In addition to his celebrity life, he's also the owner/boss of the MTT Resort located between Hotland and The Core. And he is terrible at managing the place. Even disregarding Burgerpants' complaints about him, he has put many bad ideas into use, including: Adding a statue of himself to the fountain that shoots a stream of water onto the lobby floor, not providing room keys for the hotel rooms so patrons have to pay full price just to get back inside, hiring a janitor that constantly drips slime from his chin (resulting in him continually cleaning up the same spot), and the resort's restaurant making patrons have to reserve not just their meal time in advance, but also all their food, tables, tableware, water, etc. Burgerpants : ...And every time we try to change something for the better, he vetoes it and says "that's not how they do it on the surface." Oh! Right! Humans are always eating hamburgers made of sequins and glue.
• Mettaton is terrible at ruling the Underground in his version of the neutral ending, completely neglecting the economy and the educational system as well as no longer even trying to reach the surface.
• Pre-Final Boss : He's the last boss you face before Asgore on the Neutral route and Sans on No Mercy, albeit the latter isn't much of a "fight" .
• During the Hotland arc, Mettaton is the dramatic , hammy and taunting Red oni to Alphys' nervous and ( apparently ) supportive Blue oni. They also seem to have this dynamic as friends, and when you visit Undyne in a Pacifist Route, she implies that Mettaton's eccentric personality led Alphys into hilariously compromising situations.
• If you get the Mystery Key, you can discover he used to be the Red to Napstablook 's Blue.
• The Rock Star : While he's primarily an actor in his various shows first and foremost, Mettaton has the personality of one: being loud, arrogant, and flamboyant while also showing that he's capable of singing. Then his EX form shows he has the look of a rock star as well, of the David Bowie variety.
• Shadow Archetype : As the Evil Counterpart section above explains, Mettaton represents what Papyrus would be if he became a serious threat similar to Flowey and Mad Dummy before him, if his quest for glory implied betraying the people who love him and if his narcissism overshadowed his qualities.
• Shameless Self-Promoter : The reviews in MTT Resort are clearly biased in Mettaton’s favor. Parodied in that these reviews are written by Mettaton himself .
• Shaped Like Itself : The game occasionally gives scent-based information in the status window, such as saying that Papyrus "Smells like bones." All the game can muster for Mettaton is "Smells like Mettaton."
• Shipper on Deck : Near the end of the Pacifist run, he says that Alphys and Undyne should just kiss each other already. Undyne is insulted, but Alphys thinks this is a good idea. "Oh my god! Will you two just smooch already!? The audience is dying for some romantic action!"
• Shock and Awe : Mettaton zaps you with electricity if you get a question on his quiz wrong. Mettaton EX's heart shoots lighting when it attacks directly.
• Sissy Villain : Even as a box-on-wheels, he's very flamboyant, calls the protagonist things like "sweetheart", and shows that he has no problem crossdressing for a role if the musical scene is any indication. His EX form is also an even more flamboyant rock star akin to Michael Jackson or David Bowie, and once the player gets into his old house, they find the whole place covered in pink. The typical "Sissy Villain/Manly Hero" dynamic, however, is absent, since the protagonist is a small child of Ambiguous Gender .
• Sitting Sexy on a Piano : Visited Undyne's house only to sit on the piano and eat grapes .
• So Proud of You : If you defeat him on the Pacifist route, he seems to be feeling this towards the child, saying that they've more than proven themselves to be strong enough to defeat Asgore and protect humanity. He has absolutely no malice or hard feelings about his defeat when he says this.
• Sophisticated as Hell : He's usually well- (if super-dramatically-)spoken. He also has a scene in which he puts on a dress and sings you a soft little song under a shower of rose petals that includes the lyrics "It'll suck, and then you'll die a lot", and reacts to the player typing " Toby " in part of his final boss battle with "What the hell is that?"
• Spanner in the Works : Mettaton was going to go along with playing the bad guy so that Alphys could save you and be the hero . Once you are too close to Asgore, however, he drops the charade, tells you what Alphys did, and plans to reap your soul .
• Start of Darkness : Mettaton was once a shy ghost who had dreams of becoming a big star, but promised his cousin Napstablook that he would never leave them. After meeting Alphys, who eventually built him a robotic vessel to inhabit, he decided to go back on his word and left the snail farm to become famous using his new body. It only got worse from there as the more popular Mettaton got, the more rude and narcissistic he became, culminating in him trying to murder Frisk and take their soul in order to become famous on the surface. He gets better in the Golden Ending , fortunately, as he reconciles with Napstablook and Alphys .
• Stone Wall : In his normal form, Mettaton is practically indestructible , but his attacks (except his zaps ) aren't very powerful. His EX form, on the other hand, has much more balanced stats (at least since the 1.001 update).
• Suddenly Voiced : Lets out an "Ohhhh yesssssss!! " when you flip the switch that triggers his EX form.
• Tactical Suicide Boss : In his EX form, Mettaton has a weak point in the shape of a heart not unlike a human SOUL... which he'll reveal in order to make puns and attack with it, allowing your yellow SOUL to shoot it. Note that this doesn't actually kill him (that can only be done by physically attacking); its only purpose is to knock off his limbs and lower his desired ratings count.
• There Was a Door : How he makes his entrance at Alphys' lab, with unexpected grandeur. Checking the hole he made in the wall reveals the space inside it is actually quite small, implying he was camping out inside Alphys' wall the entire time she was talking to you beforehand.
• Threshold Guardian : Mettaton is an unusual variant of this trope, as you fight him very late in the game, but he isn't a threshold guardian to a heroic adventure — he's a threshold guardian to the No Mercy run (just short of an outright Reset). If the player is having second thoughts about killing everyone in the game, Mettaton's NEO form is the player's last chance to back out without doing the aforementioned Reset note  The actual last chance to back out and avoid the corruption entirely is just before Flowey begs you not to kill him. — if the player fails to kills enough Hotland encounter monsters (around 40) before fighting him, Mettaton decides you're not irredeemable and sets you on Neutral instead.
• Tin-Can Robot : His typical appearance. Becomes a Ridiculously Human Robot when he transforms into Mettaton EX.
• Tranquil Fury : As the player knocks his limbs off during his final boss fight, his usual cheery, lively playing-to-the-crowd manner steels over and his attacks get more aggressive and direct to the point that in the time it takes to fully meet his SPARE requirement, you can have him wordlessly, motionlessly spamming lightning at you with a fixed, clearly effortful smirk.
• Trap Master : Far more than Papyrus and his puzzles. However, Alphys is able to disable most of them. Of course, it's all part of her little show, and none of the traps put you in any real danger until he decides to stop playing along.
• Troll : Has his moments of this. Especially when you learn he isn't an AI . His question about who Alphys has a crush on and "Would you smooch a ghost?" are notable examples, as is his Early-Bird Cameo as the control panel in the randomly generated puzzle in Snowdin; it wasn't a malfunction, he was screwing with Papyrus for reasons only he probably knows.
• The Usurper : In the Neutral Ending where he becomes ruler, Sans states he "just kind of... took over?". By contrast, the other characters who become ruler in the Neutral endings either inherit legitimately (Toriel, Undyne) or are elected by popular support (Papyrus, Annoying Dog, Alphys).
• Unexpected Shmup Level : Or rather, Unexpected Shmup Boss . The yellow SOUL feature you get from Alphys gets used more extensively in the fight against Mettaton EX, where you have to shoot his bombs, legs, and soul to fight back — the only time in the game where you have any sort of direct offensive capability on the bullet board.
• Unrobotic Reveal : If you find the door that the Mystery Key opens, it's revealed that he's actually Napstablook's cousin, given a physical form by Alphys so he could make it big in show business.
• Vocal Dissonance : After becoming Mettaton EX, he speaks in a deep voice that doesn't quite match his flamboyant looks. Aside from that, he also keeps the same Voice Grunting . This trope is then subverted by his higher-pitched voice when he says "yeah" if he is hit. "Ohhh yess!"
• Voice Grunting : Stereotypical robot beeping.
• Viewers Are Geniuses : In-Universe : Considering Mettaton's infamous train question...
• Walking Spoiler : When the player first meets him, he is a stereotypical (if snarky and affable) killer robot hellbent on their destruction. Truth is, it was all an act to make Alphys look better. He is actually a ghost inhabiting a machine that wants to take your soul and become a star on the surface. By extension, his EX form also leads to this.
• We Can Rebuild Him : Alphys claims as much after his boss fight, whether he was destroyed or not. It's supposed to be implied that, due to actually being a ghost inhabiting a robot, killing Mettaton EX means he's gone for good (to the point where it can be a deciding factor in Alphys' implied fate ) — at least if, like the Mad Dummy on the No Mercy route, he's grown sufficiently attached to his body.
• Weird Trade Union : He apparently abides by one, since he provides the Human with a genuine "union-mandated" break during battle as Mettaton EX.
• Well-Intentioned Extremist : The real reason he wants to kill the player is to deny Asgore their SOUL, preventing the war between monsters and humans from resuming. Using the SOUL to pass the barrier and to make it big in the human world is just a bonus.
• Wholesome Crossdresser : He wears a blue ballgown for the musical, and his EX form wears high-heels, and is, of course, dressed head-to-toe in pink . If you backtrack and talk to a lion-like monster after the musical bit, the lion comments that Mettaton looked really cool in his dress, and it "sort of makes [him] feel like [he] could wear one, too!" Awwwww . In the True Pacifist epilogue, if you talk to the lion again, you find out he decided to go for it — and, in fact, Mettaton gave him the very same dress he wore!
• World of Snark : His TV shows seem to be this, if what the Human Child goes through is any indication.
• Worthy Opponent : He frequently comments on how brilliant Dr. Alphys is whenever she helps you defeat him. Subverted, as they're not really enemies. In fact, they're close enough friends for Mettaton to agree to play an evil killer robot so she could be the hero.
• Zero-Effort Boss : Justified : Mettaton NEO is the most standout example on the Genocide Run. Not only does he go down in one hit, he never attacks. That's because he's not there to FIGHT you, but to STALL you to buy the evacuation more time. It's even in his battle stance. Besides, it is at that point that you are so powerful that most monsters will fall down from your hits with just a single blow.
