What was the final piece of music played during the credits of The Kings Speech?

I could've sworn that the music played as bertie walked to the Parliament, was from Beethoven's second piano concerto.

The King's Speech (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)

The King’s Speech, directed by Tom Hooper, portrays the relationship between Bertie, the future King George VI (Colin Firth), and the speech therapist Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush), who helps Bertie overcome his debilitating stammer. Composer Alexandre Desplat, one of the hardest working men in show business —The Ghost Writer and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows: Part 1 are just two of the other movies he scored in 2010 — provided the film’s music. You might think a movie that deals with royalty would feature bombastic accompaniment, but Desplat took a subtle approach to the project. He’s careful not to overpower the intimacy of the story of a man struggling to make meaningful sounds. Melodies are delicately etched on piano as strings often float in an almost ambient manner. (“The Rehearsal,” with its chugging rhythm and flute interjections, is probably the perkiest piece here.) The album also includes excerpts of Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and the “Emperor” Concerto performed by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Terry Davies, with Steven Osborne at the piano.

The 'speech' itself may be set to Beethoven, but Desplat’s Bafta-winning themes are surely his warmest and prettiest. They're beautifully played on the original soundtrack by the composer’s regular pianist, Dave Arch, with the gentlest of string and woodwind accompaniments. Brief but very classy.

Editorial Reviews

THE KING'S SPEECH tells an incredible story - all of it true. King George VI (Colin Firth) - father of the current queen, Elizabeth - is a shy man who suffered from an acute stuttering problem. When he unexpectedly ascends the throne of England in 1936, he must rally his nation through Depression and the Second World War through the radio. His wife, Queen Mother Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter) convinces him to employ a speech coach (Geoffrey Rush), whose wisdom and slightly unorthodox ways work wonder in the Royal Household and for a nation struggling for its existence. The luxurious score is by Alexander Desplat ("The Painted Veil").

Moroccan King Mohammed VI delivers speech to the nation on Throne Day focusing on water crisis in the country and the Palestinian issue

Published Jul 31, 2024

King Mohammed VI of Morocco delivered his annual speech on the occasion of Throne Day, marking the 25th anniversary of his ascension to the throne.

In his speech, he expressed his gratitude to God for the political, institutional, economic, and social achievements of his reign.

The king highlighted efforts to consolidate Moroccan identity, ensure social cohesion, and strengthen Morocco’s position on the international stage.

The king also underscored the ongoing challenges, particularly the issue of water exacerbated by drought and climate change.

He emphasised the importance of good governance, the prompt implementation of water transfer projects, the construction of dams, and the acceleration of desalination plants.

The speech also addressed Morocco’s support for the Palestinian cause, the king’s commitment as president of the Al-Quds Committee to provide urgent aid to Gaza, and the promotion of a sustainable solution based on the two-state solution.

Finally, the king praised the efforts of all the nation’s vital forces and paid tribute to the Royal Armed Forces and security services for their dedication to defending national unity and preserving the country’s security.

In his speech, the king emphasised that Morocco’s concern with its internal affairs did not divert attention from the tragedy experienced by the Palestinian people.

As chairperson of the Al-Quds Committee, His Majesty highlighted the efforts made to deliver urgent humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, affirming the kingdom’s continued support for initiatives aimed at achieving a ceasefire and improving the humanitarian situation.

King Mohammed VI stressed the need to move beyond crisis management and towards finding a final solution to the conflict.

In this context, he outlined three main points the urgency of working towards ending the war in Gaza as an immediate priority, while opening political horizons for achieving a just and lasting peace in the region.

The importance of reviving the peace process between Palestinians and Israelis through negotiations, with the necessity of confronting extremism from all parties.

He emphasised that achieving security and stability in the region was linked to the two-state solution, with Gaza being an integral part of the independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital.

The speech comes at a time when the region is witnessing escalating tensions, highlighting Morocco’s role as an important regional player seeking to contribute to resolving crises and promoting peace and stability in the Middle East.

The king’s address underscored Morocco’s commitment to the Palestinian cause and its efforts to play a constructive role in regional diplomacy.

It also reflects the country’s balanced approach in addressing complex regional issues while maintaining its focus on internal development.

As the situation in the Middle East continues to evolve, King Mohammed VI’s message serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and the need for sustained diplomatic efforts to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region.

The IDF has claimed a strike last month killed Hamas's military chief in Gaza, a day after the killing of the group's political chief in Iran. Its supreme leader has vowed revenge on Israel over the killing - though Israel has said it will not comment on the death.

An Israeli strike has killed four Syrian civilians in Lebanon, the Lebanese health ministry says.

Another five people - all Lebanese - were wounded in the attack on a southern village, it added.

Sky News cannot independently verify these battlefield reports.

The reported attack comes the day of Fuad Shukr's funeral, a senior Hezbollah commander assassinated by Israel in Lebanon's capital, Beirut, yesterday.

His death - and that of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran just hours later - has prompted furious rhetoric from Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, who has vowed to retaliate alongside Iran.

There is not much doubt there will be a retaliation from Iran and Hezbollah - it is just a question of when and how severe it will be, says  special correspondent Alex Crawford.

Indicators suggest it will be a "broad, multi-faceted response", drawing on all the partners of the so-called Axis of Resistance.

This includes groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, as well as Iran and Lebanon.

"They are absolutely furious about these strikes," said Crawford, referring to the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran and Hezbollah commander Fuad Shukr in Lebanon.

"The Iranian supreme leader has framed it as a breach of their sovereignty and injurious to their honour."

Crawford continued: "We have to take those words quite seriously to mean that they are planning some sort of response and they are blaming it very much on Israel.

"In Lebanon, similar, really tough words from the Hezbollah leader."

Ceasefire negotiations cannot take place while two countries talk about attacking Israel, she said, and while Israeli warplanes continue to fly over Beirut.

"At the moment everyone is waiting, but really expecting something sooner rather than later."

We can now report more detailed comments from the leader of Hezbollah, who has been speaking at the funeral of assassinated commander Fuad Shukr.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah warned the conflict with Israel had entered a "new phase", after Benjamin Netanyahu claimed responsibility for the attack which also killed an Iranian military adviser, two children and two women.

This phase was "different from the previous period", said Mr Nasrallah. Hezbollah and Israel have skirmished on the Lebanese border since 8 October, but rarely attacked deeper into either nation's territory.

"Do they expect that Hajj Ismail Haniyeh will be killed in Iran and Iran will remain silent?" he said of Israel. Israel has not commented after Haniyeh, Hamas's political leader, was allegedly assassinated in Iran within hours of Shukr.

Addressing Israelis who celebrated the two killings, he said: "Laugh a bit and you will cry a lot."

Mr Nasrallah kept his comments vague, vowing a "very-well studied retaliation" without saying what form it would take.

Israel "will have to wait for the anger of the region's honourable people," he said, as well as alluding to a possible response to the US.

He denied Hezbollah carried out the deadly strike on a soccer field in the Golan Heights, which Israel used as justification for its assassination of Shukr.

"We have the courage to take responsibility for where we strike, even if it's a mistake. If we made a mistake, we would admit and apologise," he said.

"The enemy made itself the judge, jury, and executioner without any evidence."

A satellite image shows debris around the building where Hamas's political chief was allegedly assassinated in Iran's capital.

The photo, taken this morning, shows a large building in the neighbourhood of Tajrish, northern Tehran, close to the president's official residence.

Another image of the same building shows damage to one corner covered in green tarpaulin on the southeastern edge. This photo began circulating on Telegram channels, including Saberin News, following Haniyeh's death.

Haniyeh was killed early yesterday morning just hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran's new president in Tehran.

Iranian media reported that he was staying at a "special residence for war veterans in north Tehran".

While many questions remain over how Haniyeh was killed, a New York Times report suggests that an explosive device was smuggled into the complex where Haniyeh was staying around two months ago.

The debris seen in this morning's satellite image is not visible on 28 July, as is shown below.

The leader of Hezbollah has vowed to respond to Israel's killing of the group's most senior military commander in a strike on the Lebanese capital's southern suburbs this week.

Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, speaking at the funeral of the Fuad Shukr, said unnamed countries had asked Hezbollah not to retaliate, but he said the group was exploring a "real, studied" response.

For context : Lebanon's armed group Hezbollah confirmed yesterday that Shukr had been killed.

He was considered Mr Nasrallah's right-hand man.

Israel is on a high state of alert, Benjamin Netanyahu has said.

In remarks made today, the Israeli leader said: "Israel is very prepared for any scenario - both defensively and offensively.

"We will exact a very heavy price for any act of aggression against us from any arena."

The comments come amid growing expectations that Iran or its allies will retaliate for the killing of senior leaders of Hezbollah and Hamas this week.

Ismail Haniyeh was killed by an explosive device that was secretly smuggled into the guesthouse he was staying inside in Tehran, according to the  New York Times .

The newspaper, citing several Middle Eastern officials, reports that the bomb was hidden "approximately two months ago" in the guesthouse, which was run and protected by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps in northern Tehran.

The bomb was then detonated remotely once it was made clear the Hamas chief was inside, according to sources.

It is still not clear how the bomb was placed in the guesthouse.

Earlier today Iranians turned out to mourn the Hamas leader at his funeral.

His body will then be flown to Qatar, where Haniyeh was usually based, for burial tomorrow.

Iran and Hamas have accused Israel of carrying out the strike that killed Haniyeh hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran's new president in Tehran on Wednesday.

But Israeli officials have not claimed responsibility for the attack.

Today marks 300 days since the 7 October attacks.

Israelis have been travelling to the site of the Nova festival in the Negev Desert, southern Israel, to pay tribute to those killed in the attack.

What happened there last year is now recorded as the site of Israel's worst terror attack.

On the day, Hamas carried out a series of co-ordinated attacks across Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

You can read what happened after Hamas left the Nova festival site here...

Foreign Secretary David Lammy has renewed his call for an immediate ceasefire and the release of hostages as fears grow of an escalation in the Middle East crisis after the killings of leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah.

In a statement on X, Mr Lammy also noted it had been 300 days since the 7 October attack.

What is Hezbollah and will it play a role in the Israel-Hamas conflict spreading across the Middle East?

The King's Speech (2010) The 'speech' itself may be set to Beethoven, but Desplat's Bafta-winning themes are surely his warmest and prettiest.
