Biography [ ]

Vanitas of the Blue Moon (蒼月の吸血鬼　"ヴァニタス", Sougetsu no Vanpiiru "Vanitasu"), also known as Father (とうさん, Tou-san) and Luna (ルーナ, Ruuna) is a character from Jun Mochizuki's Vanitas no Carte. Born under the Blue Moon, they were the ostensible creator of the Book of Vanitas and the disease Malnomen. Narration states it was their intent to destroy vampires through the corruption of their True Name, hoping to take revenge for a lifetime of prosecution for their birth. This power would be passed onto their kin, prophesied to bring about the end of all vampires.

Although they're aware they're not male or female, Luna isn't really sure what they really are, stating that they're unlike any other living thing in this world. They claim to have tried to find out what they really are, but have come to deeply regret it for reasons yet unknown.

Appearance [ ]

Luna wears a white robe, often times having the hood drawn up in order to conceal their face, with flowing sleeves and accents of dark blue hanging from the waist and being draped over her shoulders. Luna has a darker complexion and has long white hair that she lets hang from their hood, reaching down past her knees in length. They also wear a red bangle around their right forearm and a bracelet on their left arm which bears a small blue hourglass while carrying a staff made of bone that separates into two prongs with thread tied in a crisscrossing pattern between them.

Personality [ ]

According to legend, Vanitas of the Blue Moon is scorned by, and in return scorns, other Vampires. The bedtime story about Vanitas of the Blue Moon tells the story of a lonely vampire cast out by other vampires who despised the Vampires of the Crimson Moon and swore revenge on them.

Contrary to this story, Luna seems to be a kind individual who came to rescue Vanitas and Mikhail when Vanitas asked them for help. They have a variety of human acquaintances, and tell Vanitas that humans and vampires can often get along well. Their true opinion on vampires is currently unknown. Luna was a very caring parental figure to Misha and Vanitas, despite the latter’s initial dislike of them, and treated them both better than many (or possibly even all) of the other adults in their lives.

Luna is very knowledgeable about Malnomen, and was eager to pass this knowledge on to Mikhail and Vanitas, acting as a wise teacher to them in that respect. However, they can also be childish, throwing a small tantrum when Vanitas insulted their cooking and telling him to "do it all yourself, then".

Luna says that they are not a man or a woman, and are not like any other living thing. However, they don't seem to mind gendered terms and gendered pronouns. Mikhail refers to them as father because he has always wanted a father, and Vanitas refers to Luna as a woman because he mistook her for one continues to use female pronouns because they don't mind.

A surprise hit from the Summer 2021 season, The Case Study of Vanitas takes a unique spin on the concept of vampires. Set in 19th century Paris and full of beautiful animation and steampunk gothic elements, this shonen takes a look into a world where vampires supposedly no longer have to drink blood to survive.

The story is told through the perspective of Noé Archiviste, who recounts why he had to kill his traveling partner and self-proclaimed savior of the vampires, Vanitas. Using a grimoire called the Book of Vanitas handed down by his former teacher, Vanitas uses this ancient tome to heal vampires of a blood-thirsty disease called malnomen. With  Season 2 of The Case Study of Vanitas just getting underway , here are the key points to  remember from Season 1 .

The legend of the Book of Vanitas and its former owner, Vanitas of the Blue Moon, have a horrible reputation for wanting to eradicate the vampire race. However, Noé realizes these rumors aren't true when he first encounters Vanitas while boarding an airship to Paris as he heals a curse-bearing vampire named Amelia. After realizing Vanitas is human and inherited the book from his teacher, the real Vanitas, Noé is visibly excited.

Vanitas asks to join him on his journey to save the vampire race, but Noé declines and then faints before he can leave. He wakes up in a cell next to Vanitas, discovering that Amelia had poisoned Noé. Shortly afterward, they are released and invited to meet Count Orlock, the Queen-appointed mediator between vampires and humans in Paris. He summons the two in order to prove the book's healing powers.

During their journey, the duo run into Luca Oriflamme and his protector Jeanne, the infamous vampire executioner known as the Hellfire Witch. After she admits defeat when Vanitas figures out her weakness is Luca himself, Vanitas kisses her instead of killing her. After Jeanne and Luca bashfully escape, they return to Count Orlock's office. Vanitas asks Amelia about seeing the Parade of Charlatan, entities that other curse-bearers describe seeing.

Amelia denies it, but Noé drinks her blood -- activating his power of being able to access people's memories -- and confirms she is lying. Dominique de Sade then enters the room, proclaiming she is Noé's fiancée and has heard everything. She insists Noé escort her to a masquerade ball, crossing the barrier that separates the human and vampire worlds with the goal of isolating Noé and Vanitas.

Dominique's sister Veronica tries to kill Vanitas and Noé at the ball, exclaiming that they used to book to spread the curse. She is quickly interrupted by the host of the party, Ruthven, who wants to take Noé and Vanitas under his wing. Noé faints and wakes up to find a visibly angry Vanitas at the bell tower. After a heated exchange, Noé vows to stay by Vanitas' side because he is intrigued by him and wants to see the outcome of his labor to save all vampires.

While reuniting with Ruthven, Vanitas asks to see the queen, stating she hasn't been out in public and wondering if she's even alive. Gravely insulted, Ruthven attacks Vanitas in a blind rage. Noé and Vanitas are sent back to the human world where the latter reveals he did all this to gather information about Luca, who had reacted differently than the other vampires when he made his outrageous statement.

After being kicked out of Orlock's office, Vanitas runs into his former partner Dante and tracks down a curse-bearer tied to the Church's anti-vampire unit, the Chasseurs. Vanitas and Noé go into the underground catacombs of Paris in order to find the Chasseurs and run into Roland, hellbent on saving the human Vanitas. Roland ambushes Noé upon realizing he is a vampire, but Vanitas and Noé escape using a flash bomb.

Vanitas reveals his ulterior motive of finding Moreau, a madman who was kicked out of the Chasseurs for obsessive vampire research. Moreau conducted human experiments, and Vanitas was one of them. When Roland catches up again, Noé stages holding Vanitas hostage. In a twist of fate, Roland realizes Noé is different from other vampires and asks to be friends.

The team enters Moreau's lab as he reveals he wishes to become a vampire himself. A member of the Charlatan, Mosieur Spider, appears to tell Moreau to destroy his lab. The curse-bearer they were hunting appears and is revealed to be a shadow that devours all life forms in front of him. To defeat it, Noé and Vanitas jump into the shadow's mouth and use the book. Everyone escapes in time for the lab to explode.

After Jeanne realizes she's in love with Vanitas , Dante comes with news that the Beast of Gévaudan lives and they've found five bodies. Vanitas sets off to see if it's a curse bearer or not, but Noé is distracted by his strong desire to drink his partner's blood. Vanitas tells Noé that if he ever uses his powers to access his memory, he will kill him. Nonetheless, he agrees to let Noé taste his blood as long as he doesn't use his Archiviste powers on him. The season ends with a mysterious vampire being hugged by Naenia, stating that her time for vengeance is now.

Season 1 was packed full of action and rich worldbuilding, skillfully accented by beautiful animation. Will Season 2 be able to live up to the fantastic first impression? Being one of the most anticipated anime for the Winter 2022 season , fans are hopeful.  The Case Study of Vanitas airs every Saturday on Funimation and Crunchyroll.

Why Does Noe Kill Vanitas in The Case Study of Vanitas?

The Case Study of Vanitas has proved itself, time and again, to be one of the anime gems of 2021. Love them or hate them, the characters are unforgettable, and the plot is both interesting and illustrated with such beauty that you can't help wanting to keep watching. And, of course, there's this first-episode spoiler, that hooked us right from the start: why does Noé kill Vanitas?

First, a little context: In the first episode of The Case Study of Vanitas or Vanitas no Karte, Noé, a young vampire is out on a quest for the book of Vanitas, a cursed grimoire that corrupts vampires and causes them an unnatural bloodlust… at least, that's how the story goes.

In Paris, Noé meets Vanitas, a human who possesses the legendary book but uses it to cure vampires of the corruption of their true names and return them to normal. His motivations are a mystery, as he's extremely obnoxious and hard to work with. Nevertheless, Noé and Vanitas have a common goal. But then Noé, who is narrating this story retrospectively, after an unknown passage of time, admits that he ended this joint journey by killing Vanitas.

As the manga of Vanitas no Karte is still ongoing, we can't tell why Noé would kill Vanitas. He is, after all, the more mild-mannered and idealistic of the two (so far in the anime, at least) and he's fascinated by Vanitas even when he can't stand him.

At this point, we can only speculate, but given how difficult a character Vanitas is, it could be that he did something unforgivable at some point – though, given the regret in Noé's voice when he narrates, he probably doesn't feel justified in doing whatever he did. This fact illustrates Vanitas' death more like something Noé considers his fault.

Over the span of the 12-episode first cour , Vanitas and Noé navigate numerous dangers, and peril is bound to become greater later on. It would be plausible to speculate that Noé was unable to protect Vanitas at some point – after all, no matter how hard he's to kill, Vanitas is human .

Of course, this is Jun Mochizuki we're talking about; the author ofPandora Hearts has blurred the line between life and death on several occasions, and why would we expect anything different here, in a work about vampires no less?

One guess – far-fetched but not entirely implausible – could be that Vanitas might become a vampire later. Or, he might not even be dead at all. It might be that Noé only believes so.

Whatever the reason Vanitas died, and whatever Noé's words mean, one thing is certain; spoiling the ending in the first episode can be a blast by way of storytelling. Even if what's happening right now isn't exactly your cup of tea, there's reason to persevere and keep watching – knowing that the journey is more important than its conclusion, but also that you want to know how the foregone conclusion came to be.

The Case Study Of Vanitas Part 2 - What We Know So Far

On Aug. 6, the English-dubbed version of "The Case Study of Vanitas" arrived at Funimation's website , bringing the steampunk-styled supernatural mystery manga series to life for a whole new audience. The vampire -based anime, set in Paris of the 19th century, is very atmospheric, what with its airships, period clothing and blue-moon and crimson vampires. It starts with the young vampire Noé, who is asked by his teacher to go to Paris to look for the titular book. In an incident on the airship, he meets a girl named Amelia — who turns out to be a vampire named Florifel, who just needs her name returned to her — and blue-eyed Vanitas himself. Vanitas enlists his help in changing the "curse-bearing" vampires back to normal using the grimoire in question. 

"The Case Study of Vanitas" has aired 12 episodes of its split-cour season, which is normal for anime shows — but now leaves fans to wonder when Part 2 will happen, and what will happen going forward, since the series hasn't exactly concluded its plot. If you're one of the fans anxiously awaiting news of the second part of the first season, here's what we know so far.

When is the release date for The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The @vanitas_anime Twitter account announced on Sept. 17 that the second cour (or quarter of a year) of "The Case Study of Vanitas" is coming in January 2022. This is good news, as it means fans won't have too long to wait:  Anime News and Facts is reporting that the 12 episodes in the second part of the split-cour series will air between Jan. 8 and March 26, 2022. It should be noted that these dates refer to the Japanese release, not the English one. 

However, English-speaking fans shouldn't experience too much of a delay. The initial Japanese run premiered on various channels starting July 2 ( via Anime News Network ), which means it was subtitled with the first episode dubbed by the time it released on Funimation a little over a month later. Comingsoon.com said that Funimation had released five dubbed episodes by September 17 (a paid subscription is required to access the dubbed versions of newer episodes). 

Hopefully, that means U.S. fans will be streaming at least a subtitled second part of Season 1 by springtime.

Who are the characters in The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

The main characters of the series include Noé Archiviste, played in the Japanese by Kaito Ishikawa, and Vanitas (not the original of the book), played by Natsuki Hanae. Supporting characters include Jeanne (Inori Minase), a vampire girl also called the "Hellfire Witch"; Luca (Shino Shimoji), a polite vampire boy ranking just below the queen, who is trying to save his brother; Dominique (Ai Kayano), the aristocratic daughter of the alien lord the Marquis de Sade; Veronica (Yoko Hikasa), Dominique's sister who hates humans; Ruthven (Toshiyuki Morikawa), Luca's uncle and the hero who brokered peace between humans and vampires. 

Others include Dante (Taro Kuichi), Johann (Koji Yusa), and Richie (Riho Kuma), Vanitas' information brokers, and Noé's unnamed teacher (Akira Ishida), the one who sent him to find the book. Vampire Naenia (Kaori Nazuka), vampire hunter Laurent (Kengo Kawanishi), Holy Knight Olivier (Tomoaki Maeno) and Noé's first friend Louis de Sade (Miyuri Shimabukuru) also appear. There's also the cat, Murr (Miyu Komaki). Not all have survived Season 1, though, so they won't necessarily appear in Part 2.

The English dub cast of the series includes Stephen Fu as Noe, Zeo Robinson as Vanitas, Marianne Bray as Murr, Ian Sinclair as Dante, and Hayden Daviau as Amelia. 

What is the plot of The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2?

As the first part of the first season ended, the Beast of Gévaudan has resurfaced, so Noé and Vanitas go to investigate sightings of it. The beast will likely figure largely in the events of the second part of the season, as will Vanitas' relationship with Noé. Viewers may also finally learn the intentions of the secret organization Charlatan because of the big reveal in the end-credits scene. As viewers know, Ruthven figures largely in the plotting that's been going on, and he has hypnotized Noé with Jeanne's unwitting help, which could all blow up in Part 2. Meanwhile, Roland is going through a crisis of faith because he has learned that not all vampires are bad, and the show will no doubt explore the ramifications of that.

"The Case Study of Vanitas" will feature 12 episodes in Season 1 Part 2, making up a total of 24 episodes in the first season. The anime has been rapidly catching up to the manga:  Monsters and Critics predicts that by the 24th episode, the anime will be up to Chapter 43 of the manga. The manga is expected to publish Chapter 61, which means season 2 might be a more difficult sell than the first.

Vanitas (ヴァニタス, Vanitasu ) is a protagonist and the titular character of Jun Mochizuki 's The Case Study of Vanitas . Contrary to the legend of Vanitas of the Blue Moon , Vanitas claims to be "an average human being" who happened to inherit the Book of Vanitas . It is his stated intention to save the Vampire race by any means possible, using the Book of Vanitas not to spread Malnomen but to cure it. As such, he refers to himself as a doctor who specializes in Vampires. He commissions the help of Noé Archiviste , a Vampire sent by his teacher to research the Book of Vanitas and the series' narrator, in finding cases of Malnomen and curing them. [1]

Originally the child of a former doctor and a performer, Vanitas's biological mother died in childbirth, leaving him to be raised by his father and the traveling players he worked with. Their party was eventually attacked by Vampires, leaving Vanitas as the only survivor. Subsequently, he was picked up by the Catholic Church , and trained to be a Chasseur . However, his death was faked by Doctor Moreau , [2] and he was kept as a test subject, renamed No. 69. [3] There he would meet Mikhail , known as No. 71, and come to regard him as a younger brother. The two were subjected to inhumane experimentation in hopes of turning them into Vampires, all to no avail. Eventually, it was revealed they had received the blood of the Vampire of the Blue Moon, being the only human subjects not to reject it. This gave them abilities somewhat beyond normal human capacity, allowing them to heal slightly faster. The two were to be forcibly linked to the Books of Vanitas in a procedure which would destroy their minds, but were rescued by Vanitas of the Blue Moon. [4]

Desperate, Vanitas and Mikhail went along with Vanitas of the Blue Moon, and were taken as their adoptive children. While Mikhail quickly warmed up to his new guardian, Vanitas remained distrustful, despite taking an active role in supporting them and Mikhail. After some time had passed, Vanitas of the Blue Moon confessed that Vanitas and Mikhail would likely soon die due to the strain the Moreau's experiments had put on their bodies. They said that, lacking any other options, the two could be saved by becoming the Vampire's Kin . While Mikhail, whose body had begun to break down, quickly accepted, Vanitas vehemently refused. He killed the Vampire of the Blue Moon after being Marked , in an event he believed to have killed Mikhail, thus leading him to believe he was the only legitimate Kin of the Blue Moon. [2]

Appearance [ ]

Vanitas is a slender, androgynous young man of average height. He has pale skin, large, expressive eyes, a round face, and a small chin. So blue are his eyes that they are used as an immediately identifiable trait, compared to the color of copper sulfate . An upper left canine tooth is especially pronounced, giving the appearance of fangs when his teeth were visible, though they are not as pronounced as vampires' fangs. His hair is long, black, and irregularly cut, his bangs falling into the center of his face. On either side of his face, his hair is straight cut, the left side to one level and the right side to two. Though he at times appears to wear a ponytail, his hair usually sits freely, the hair on either side of his head cut shorter than that down the middle. One cowlick sticks up from the right side of his head. Both of his ears are pierced, a simple stud worn in his right ear, while his left ear is pierced with a silver (gold, in the anime) hourglass-shaped earring that he inherited from Luna, and two rings through the helix.

While Vanitas wore several outfits over the course of the series, he usually wears a white shirt over black pants, a dark blue striped vest, a large blue bow tie, and an oversized black coat. As accessories, he wears a long, wide ribbon tied into a bow as a belt, short boots with white spats, and black gloves with claws embedded at the fingertips. His coat is long, with a wide collar and a single button, large enough to frequently fall over one shoulder. At its hem, it takes a baloon-like form, and is joked to float "through some mysterious power." Its sleeves are someone based on those of a furisode kimono . To his belt, he straps the Book of Vanitas, two knives, and two tool cases. His outfit is called "the outfit nobody understands." [5]

As a child, he looked much the same, though his hair was less cleanly cut. He was thin and physically diminutive, despite his active training as a chasseur. Prior to being Marked by Vanitas of the Blue Moon, his eyes were a darker shade of blue.

Personality [ ]

Vanitas seems to take nothing seriously, and almost always has a playful grin on his face. He acts impulsively most of the time, and his plans are normally reckless. Vanitas carries a mischievous air around him. He finds utmost amusement in Noé's abnormal reactions to things. However, he is capable of showing seriousness when the situation called for it, as well as anger. He is very flirtatious, as seen in the way he behaves around Jeanne.

Beneath his flippant attitude, Vanitas is a broken man who despises both humans and vampires, but hates himself more than either. Vanitas hates being vulnerable around people, refusing to go to sleep around anyone he doesn’t trust. He likes high places and is often seen hanging around rooftops.

Powers and Abilities [ ]

General: As a mere human, Vanitas is more often than not significantly less powerful than those around him who are Vampires , at least physically so. While he is demonstrably fit, athletic, and spry, his strength, speed, and endurance are only that of an average human being and no more. The exception is the rate at which he heals from injuries, which is accelerated due to Doctor Moreau 's experimentation. [4] To compensate for his generally inferior physical strength, Vanitas is extremely sharp, clever, and resourceful in battle. He can analyze situations and come up with appropriate solutions and counterattacks very fast, even in the middle of a dangerous battle. He makes use of every resource available to him and is not afraid to use underhanded tactics, to the dismay of those around him. [6]

Weapons: Vanitas's main weapons are a pair of knives whose hilts are rigged with wires. In addition, stored in some pockets on his belt are various "cheaters' implements" which he uses both in and out of battle. He has a tendency to try and keep his weapons and tools hidden, to allow himself the additional element of surprise should he need it, adding to his devious trickster-like fighting style. [5] He is also skilled in gathering information about his enemies and putting that to use in battle against them. [7] He favors being prepared and constantly having the upper hand against his enemies.

Chasseur Training: Vanitas's proficiency in combat seems to have originated from his training as a Chasseur. In addition to his combat abilities and weapons training, his brief time with the Chasseurs taught him in great detail the methods of fighting a Vampire. He knows that, as their eyes are the conduit with which they can access and rewrite the World Formula , the first step is to aim for a Vampire's eyes. [8] He has utilized this knowledge not only against Vampires he's attacked [2] but also against Chasseurs who have attacked him. [9] He also, through unknown means, has access to the drugs Chasseurs use to boost their physical abilities. He only uses them in the rare scenario where he has no choice but to fight a Vampire to the death. [10]

The Book of Vanitas : The main source of Vanitas's power is the Book of Vanitas and his control over it. The main method in which he uses the Book is in healing curse-bearers with what he calls an "Inverse Operation" ( 逆 ( ぎゃく ) 演 ( えん ) 算 ( ざん ) , Gyaku Enzan ). Contrary to Vampires' common belief and fears about the curse of the Blue Moon and the related Book, Vanitas uses the Book to interfere with True Names and heal them, extracting the Maladies that warp them into Malnomen . [1] He can also, before doing so, use the Book to identify exactly what Malnomen it is, though just as often Vanitas can name said Malnomen at the top of his head. This inverse operation requires a high amount of proficiency from the user, as the only other to own a Book of Vanitas cannot interfere with True Names on such a level. [11] On rare occasions the Malnomen will be too strong for him to heal on his own, and he will require the curse-bearer in question to reject it of their own volition and call upon the power of his Mark of Possession to complete the operation. [12]

Vanitas does not only use the Book for saving however, it is also his main weapon in battle. As the Book of Vanitas is able to rewrite the World Formula at will, he can use it to a variety of purposes. He can stun Vampires and render them immobile for a short period of time, [13] though a Vampire strong enough may be able to gain mobility sooner. [6] He can also interfere with Astermite , which allows him to manipulate automatons to do his bidding, go haywire, [14] even explode at his will. [15]

Menial: Aside from combat, Vanitas also has a number of skills in other areas of expertise. Despite his status as a doctor being largely self-proclaimed, Vanitas has had clear medical training and experience, likely from being raised by his doctor of a father. [2] He knows how to perform first aid, how to treat poisons, [16] and carries various medicines around with him. [5] He also knows a number of other practical skills, including how to cook, how to clean, [2] and has various knowledge about French history and culture, [17] even minor trivia such as different apple desserts. [18] He is familiar with the Latin language, likely the result of both his upbringing in the Church and his medical knowledge.

• "Vanitas" is an artistic term referring to a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. It derives from the Latin word "vānitās" which can translate to "emptiness," "nothingness," "falsity," or "vanity" in English. [32]
• Vanitas shares a character song with Noé, Le Formidable! , sung by their Japanese voice actors and composed by Sasanomaly.
• Around the Chasseurs, Vanitas uses the French name "Vincent" (in Japanese, ヴァンサン, Vansan ) as an alias. This is likely a reference to Vincent Nightray (using the English pronunciation, in Japanese, ヴィンセント, Vinsento ), a recurring antagonist from Mochizuki's previous series, Pandora Hearts .
• That said, oysters seem to be a favorite food of his. [33]
• When The Case Study of Vanitas was being first conceived, Vanitas was a vampire who took on the role of Holmes and Noé was a human who took on the role of Watson, inspired by Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes [34] novels. Mochizuki received criticism that this narrative setup was too standard and boring. Upon hearing the suggestion that she switch their races, she was captivated by the idea of a human Holmes and vampire Watson, resulting in the current story. The visible fangs in Vanitas's current design are an element that remained from the original idea for his race. [35]
• In the earliest drafts of Vanitas's design when he was still a vampire, he was supposed to look a bit older than his current version, and he smoked a pipe that he always carried attached to a chain and hung around his neck. He also carried around a fancy parasol, presumably to protect himself from the sun. Even after Mochizuki changed his race to human, she had him keep his parasol and pipe. [36]
• When coming up with Vanitas's personality, Mochizuki described him as "an unusual vampire with a bewitching smile, but a moron who falls in love with an idiot." [36]
