Lax gun laws and lax parents can create a deadly combination

Colin Gray, father of Colt Gray, sits during his first appearance before Barrow County Superior Court Judge Currie Mingledorff at the Barrow County Courthouse Superior Court, Friday, September 6, 2024, in Winder. As with most school shooters, the 14-year-old charged in Barrow County didn’t have to steal a gun or buy it on the street. His father gave him an AR-15-style rifle during the holiday season last year. The high school freshman allegedly used it to kill two teachers and two classmates at Apalachee High School on Sept. 4.

It’s not unusual for young killers to source their weapons from their parents. Data collected by the Violence Prevention Project, a nonpartisan, nonprofit research center, shows 80% of school shooters get their guns from family members, most often parents and grandparents.

What is unusual is that 54-year-old Colin Gray, the suspect’s father, is also under arrest, facing four counts of involuntary manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder and eight counts of cruelty to children .

Gray’s arrest follows the conviction in April of Michigan couple James and Jennifer Crumbley, who bought their son, who was 15 at the time, a 9 mm Sig Sauer pistol he then used to murder four classmates and wound seven others at his Michigan school three years ago. The semiautomatic weapon was an early Christmas gift.

Gun safety advocates hailed the Crumbley convictions, the first ever to hold parents criminally liable for a school shooting by their child. The former Florida judge who presided over the trial of the shooter in the 2018 Parkland High School shooting said at the time, “I think it sets a precedent that parents cannot be stupid anymore.”

Yes, they can.

Gray gave his son a rifle last December, only a few months after police questioned the boy about threats to shoot up a school reported anonymously to the FBI by users of an online gaming chat room. When questioned in May 2023 by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office on his front porch, his son, then 13, denied he made any threats. His father assured an investigator that his son did not have unsupervised access to his hunting rifles.

In a newly released video of the interview, Gray admits he didn’t lock his weapons away from his son, saying, “We do a lot of shooting, We do a lot of deer hunting. He shot his first deer this year … He knows the seriousness of weapons and what they can do and how to use them and not use them.”

The Apalachee High School shooting occurs at the intersection of two particular modern American failings — the deference of political leaders to the money and influence of the gun lobby and the unwillingness of parents to impose and enforce limits.

The political problem offers a simple fix. Stop electing people who say our guns make us safer. With the highest rate of civilian gun ownership per capita compared to any other peer country, the United States should be among the safest places in the world based on the political claims.

We are not. We are among the most at risk for gun violence, especially our children. Firearms now kill more children ages 1-17 years in the U.S. than any other type of injury or illness.

The parent problem may be harder to remedy. Parents increasingly treat rules — whether around schoolwork, driving or underage drinking — as optional for their kids. I still see parents letting newly licensed teens drivers exceed Georgia’s strict passenger limits. I am always surprised how many parents shrug off traffic camera and parking tickets that arrive in the mail for their young drivers. The common rationales are, “Kids are only young once. Let them have some fun,” and “I was just as wild as a teenager.”

In a case now in the news, a Michigan mother allowed her then-16-year-old to drive an even faster car after he exceeded 140 mph in the family’s Audi sports coupe. The Detroit Free Press reported : “According to police reports, his mom knew about his driving habits through a special safety app called Life360, and once texted him: ‘I have screenshots of you … doing 123 mph. … It scares me to my bone.’ But she didn’t take away his keys. Rather, she bought a faster and more powerful car and allegedly gave him access to it: a BMW X3 M series that can reach up to 177 mph.”

When teen Kiernan Tague lost control of that BMW in late 2023 driving 105 mph in a 25-mph zone, he hit a pole and killed his teenage passenger, Flynn MacKrell , police said. In the two weeks before the fatal crash, the Free Press reported that Life360 recorded 94 trips by Tague, nearly half them over 90 mph. The highest speed recorded was 153 mph.

Upon now learning Tague’s mother was aware of her son’s past recklessness, MacKrell’s parents asked prosecutors this summer to arrest her, along with her son, now 17, who faces a second-degree murder charge. They contend that Tague’s mother can be prosecuted because she knew her son was a danger and didn’t lock away the car keys, citing the Crumbley conviction as precedent for parental accountability.

After many school shootings, including at Heritage High School in Conyers a month after Columbine, the parents said they never worried about their household guns because they didn’t realize their child was capable of violence. As she recalled her son walking to the school bus the morning of the Heritage High shooting in 1999, the mother of shooter T.J. Solomon told the court, “I thought we had the perfect life.’’

BREAKING NEWS

Man charged with hitting and severely injuring two teens in December crash pleads guilty

Virginia department of education releases final cell phone free education guidance, hundreds of pagers exploded in lebanon and syria in a deadly attack. here's what we know..

Associated Press

NEW YORK – In what appears to be a sophisticated, remote attack , pagers used by hundreds of members of Hezbollah exploded almost simultaneously in Lebanon and Syria Tuesday, killing at least nine people — including a young girl — and wounding thousands more.

The Iran-backed militant group blamed Israel for the deadly explosions, which targeted an extraordinary breadth of people and showed signs of being a long-planned operation. How the attack was executed is largely uncertain and investigators have not immediately said how the pagers were detonated. The Israeli military has declined to comment.

Recommended Videos

Here's what we know so far.

Why were pagers used in the attack?

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah previously warned the group’s members not to carry cellphones, saying they could be used by Israel to track the group's movements for targeted strikes. As a result, the organization uses pagers to communicate.

A Hezbollah official told The Associated Press the exploded devices were from a new brand the group had not used before. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the press, did not identify the brand name or supplier.

How could sabotage cause these pagers to explode?

With little disclosed from investigators so far, multiple theories have emerged Tuesday around how the attack might have been carried out. Several experts who spoke with The Associated Press suggest that the explosions were likely the result of supply-chain interference.

Very small explosive devices may have been built into the pagers prior to their delivery to Hezbollah, and then all remotely triggered simultaneously, possibly with a radio signal, said Carlos Perez, director of security intelligence at TrustedSec. By the time of the attack, “more than likely the battery was probably half-explosive and half-actual battery.”

After security camera footage appeared on social media Tuesday purporting to show one of the pagers explode on a man’s hip in a Lebanese market, two munitions experts also said that the blast appeared to be the result of a tiny explosive device.

“Looking at the video, the size of the detonation is similar to that caused by an electric detonator alone or one that incorporates an extremely small, high-explosive charge,” said Sean Moorhouse, a former British Army officer and explosive ordinance disposal expert. He estimated the amount of explosive required could be as little as 1.5 grams to 2 grams — roughly the size of an eraser on the end of a pencil.

Moorhouse explains that the tiny explosives and the method for detonating them would have had to have been built into the pagers prior to delivery, signaling the likely involvement of a state actor. He adds that Israel’s foreign intelligence agency, the Mossad, is the most obvious suspect to have the resources to carry out such an attack.

N.R. Jenzen-Jones, an expert in military arms who is director of the Australian-based Armament Research Services, agreed that the scale and sophistication of the attack “almost certainly points to a state actor,” and that Israel had been accused of carrying out such operations in the past. Last year, AP reported that Iran accused Israel of trying to sabotage its ballistic missile program through faulty foreign parts that could explode , damaging or destroying the weapons before they could be used.

What else could have happened?

Another possibility is that malware could have been inserted into the operating system of the pagers — and that somehow caused the device batteries to all overload at a specific time, causing them to burst into flame.

According to a Hezbollah official and Lebanese security officials, the pagers first heated up and then exploded in the pockets, or the hands, of those carrying them Tuesday afternoon.

These pagers run on lithium ion batteries, the Hezboolah official said, claiming the devices exploded as the result of being targeted from an Israeli “security operation," without elaborating further.

When overheated, lithium ion batteries can smoke, melt and even catch on fire. Rechargeable lithium batteries are used in consumer products ranging from cellphones and laptops to electric cars. Lithium battery fires can burn up to 590 C (1,100 F).

Still, Moorhouse and others noted that images and video footage seen Tuesday more strongly resembled the detonation of small explosive charge, not an overheating battery.

“A lithium ion battery fire is one thing, but I’ve never seen one explode like that. It looks like a small explosive charge,” Alex Plitsas, a weapons expert at the Atlantic Council.

Another possibility is an electronic pulse “that was sent from afar and burned the devices and caused their explosion,” said Yehoshua Kalisky, a scientist and senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, a Tel Aviv think tank.

“It is not some random action; it was deliberate and known,” Kalisky added.

Central Europe faces more deadly flooding, Poland declares disaster

STORY: Bursting their banks and inundating towns - more rivers across central Europe have been unable to deal with a deadly deluge of heavy rain from the worst flooding in at least two decades.

And on Monday Poland's government declared a disaster in affected areas and said that it had set aside $260 million to help victims.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk said his country and others affected would seek financial aid from the European Union.

The southern Polish town of Klodzko was still inundated with water on Monday after border areas between the Czech Republic and Poland were hit hard over the weekend.

Surging water levels collapsed some bridges, forced evacuations, and left a trail of destruction.

And in Nysa, swollen rivers caused a hospital to evacuate its patients including pregnant women and elderly people in rafts.

The country's Education Minister said 420 schools had been closed across four provinces.

Water levels in some parts of Poland were not expected to peak until Wednesday.

Thousands have been evacuated in the Czech Republice and in the town of Jesenik, floods stormed through on Sunday destroying vehicles, roads and homes.

Some residents have begun the clean-up after water levels began to drop.

This man saw water as high as two meters running through the street.

He says his house may need to be taken down and telephones lines are not working

Water and electricity are also out.

Devastating impacts have also been felt in Eastern Romania, where villages and towns were submerged.

Countries along the Danube river including Slovakia and Hungary were also on watch as levels were expected to rise.

Budapest has declared 12,000 soldiers are on standby to respond.

In Austria, the levels of rivers and reservoirs fell overnight as rain eased but officials were bracing for a second wave as heavier rain was expected.

A Deadly Education: A Novel (The Scholomance, Book 1) Audible Audiobook – Unabridged

New York Times Best Seller

From the author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the first book of the Scholomance trilogy, the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic.

Finalist for the Lodestar Award

“The dark school of magic I’ve been waiting for.” (Katherine Arden, author of the Winternight Trilogy)

I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life.

Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I’m concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I’m not joining his pack of adoring fans.

I don’t need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts; I’m probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I’ll level mountains and kill untold millions, making myself the dark queen of the world.

At least, that’s what the world expects. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me, like one more evil thing that’s crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school certainly does.

But the Scholomance isn’t getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone’s idea of the shining hero, but I’m going to make it out of this place alive, and I’m not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either.

Although I’m giving serious consideration to just one .

With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a school bursting with magic like you’ve never seen before, and a heroine for the ages - a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.

The magic of the Scholomance trilogy continues in The Last Graduate .

“The can’t-miss fantasy of fall 2020, a brutal coming-of-power story steeped in the aesthetics of dark academia. ... A Deadly Education will cement Naomi Novik’s place as one of the greatest and most versatile fantasy writers of our time.” ( BookPage, starred review)

“A must-read ... Novik puts a refreshingly dark, adult spin on the magical boarding school. ... Readers will delight in the push-and-pull of El and Orion’s relationship, the fantastically detailed world, the clever magic system, and the matter-of-fact diversity of the student body.” ( Publishers Weekly, starred review)
